“Cat cafe” is purrfect spot for Paris animal lovers

France's first "cat cafe" opens on Saturday in Paris with an in house troupe of nine rescue cats ready and waiting to be made a fuss of by cat-loving customers.

Already popular in Tokyo where there are dozens, cat cafes allow customers who cannot have a pet at home to enjoy a cup of something hot with a purring cat perched on their knees.

Margaux Gandelon, the woman behind the new Cafe des Chats in Paris's trendy Marais district, says the cats were carefully selected for their social skills and stresses that hygiene and their welfare are her top priorities.

"My cats are free all day and all night," she said. Cindy Engel from Strasbourg visited the cafe ahead of its opening for a preview.

The 31-year-old welcomed the concept saying it encouraged her to interact with other people rather than electronic devices.

"The cats allow us to not always be connected to our mobiles. What's more they create social connections," she said.

"Instead of typing on our computers while drinking a coffee we talk about cats to our neighbours," she added. Not everyone, however, was convinced.

"It's a good experience but eating with cats is not my thing," said Edward Chrismars, adding that he was just there to please a friend.

"It's alright to have them sitting on the sofa, that's OK, but they can't jump on the table or eat from my plate. It's not hygienic!" he said. – AFP/Relaxnews, September 20, 2013.

Inter Milan close to Indonesian takeover: report

Latest Update: September 20, 2013 06:46 am

Inter Milan are edging closer to a deal with businessman Erick Thohir that would see the Indonesian tycoon acquire a majority share in the Serie A giants, reports said Thursday.

Thohir has been linked with a takeover of the Italian club since last season, which Inter finished in a disappointing ninth place, failing to qualify for European competition in the process.

Inter president Massimo Moratti and Thohir met twice, in May and June this year, but failed to reach agreement.

But reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper on Thursday said the pair had held talks in Paris this week and had made "significant progress" towards signing a deal that would see Thohir acquire a majority 70% stake.

Neither Moratti, who made his fortune in the oil industry, nor Thohir were quoted in the report.

Inter, the last Italian side to win the Champions League in 2010 when they won the treble under Jose Mourinho, are reported to be desperate for a move away from the San Siro ground they share with city rivals AC Milan.

However Moratti also wants the club to take advantage of ripe markets in Asia which English Premiership giants like Manchester United have exploited.

Moratti told media last month he was still keen to attract investment that would help further promote the club worldwide.

"As a club Inter needs to expand and break into new markets. And with Erick (on board) this would be possible," Moratti was quoted as saying on August 3.

Gazzetta's report on Thursday claimed that Indonesia, which has the world's largest muslim population, already boasted 11 million Inter fans.

Gazzetta quoted unnamed sources close to Thohir as saying this week: "Erick is very excited." - AFP, September 19, 2013.

Unpaid Raikkonen says cash row prompted exit

Latest Update: September 20, 2013 06:29 am

Former world champion Kimi Raikkonen (pic) today said a row over money prompted his departure from Lotus for Ferrari, revealing that he hadn't received his salary from the British team.

The Finn, whose high-profile move has been the talk of Formula One, acknowledged that he was effectively racing for free at this week's Singapore Grand Prix.

"I like to race, obviously that's the only reason why I'm here," said Raikkonen, detailing his reasons for the move for the first time.

"It doesn't matter which team it is. Obviously the reason why (there's a problem with money) you would have to ask the team, but the reason why I left the team was really on the money side.

"And with things like they are, I don't have my salary. It's an unfortunate thing but I like to try and help the team as much as I can and I like to race."

Raikkonen did not go into further detail but reports have said Lotus have fallen behind in payments to the 2007 world title-holder.

The Autosport.com website said the Finn had been demanding financial guarantees to stay with the team next year after the payments were delayed.

The comments from Raikkonen about his reasons for moving will not ease fears about how he will re-settle with Ferrari, his former team, and work with Fernando Alonso, who is also a former world champion. - AFP, September 19, 2013.

Workaholic, turn your desk into a mini-gym

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 10:12 PM PDT

September 19, 2013
Latest Update: September 19, 2013 02:39 pm

Too busy to take a walk outdoors or exercise at the gym due to work constraints? How about exercising in your workplace?

It is possible for workaholics, who spend most of their time in office, to exercise right from their desks, without having to go to the gym or even outside.

A health therapist at Krogh Consultancy Sdn Bhd, Ar'nie Rozah Krogh, noted that a 15-minute exercise daily would help to avoid work-related physical and mental stress.

"Just 15 minutes, that is good enough, but of course the longer you can go, the better it is.

"But 15 minutes daily or a total of 105 minutes a week is the least recommended amount of time to keep you fit and ward off problems affecting your organs," she told Bernama during the Holistic Health In The Office workshop organised by the Bernama Centre of Excellence in Kuala Lumpur, recently.

Ar'nie said that based on research, 65% of office workers get sick due to work stress and another 35% due to physical injuries.

"Due to stress, today more people in the developed world are dying of diseases like heart failure, diabetes and other ailments," she said.

So Ar'nie shared some tips on how workers, especially workaholics, could maintain a healthy lifestyle in the office.

Turn your desk into a mini-gym

She mentioned several things people could do to make their workplaces a healthier environment.

"Available space, desks and other office furniture can double as exercise equipment.

"You can do dips using the chair or the edge of the desk by placing your hands on the edge, and bend your arms to slowly lower yourself about six inches lower than your seat. Then, raise yourself by straightening your arms," she said.

Ar'nie suggested doing push-ups by using the desk, leaning against it and then pushing away. Workers could also lift objects with their legs, keeping the object close to the body and toward the middle of the torso.

She said that while sitting at a desk for long periods of time might seem like a good way to stay productive, it is very unhealthy.

"The workaholics should set an alarm reminding them to get up and walk around regularly.

"You need to take breaks every hour or two to get up and move. A lot of low back condition happens from just sitting for a long period of time that weakens the muscles at the back," she said.

Watch your posture

"The number one thing that gets people into trouble, as far as a downgrade in their health is concerned, is their posture," she said.

She noted that certain ergonomic changes could really make a difference - maintaining the keyboard at a level that does not require straining to reach (ie. it is not too high or too low), and sitting with legs flexed at a 90-degree angle and feet resting comfortably on the floor.

She also recommended strengthening the muscles involved in posture - including the abdomen, the muscles attached to the back of the spine and the gluteals - to avoid injury to the muscles of the neck, lower back, arms and legs.

"It's important to maintain a balance between stretching and strengthening muscles," she said.

"When muscles are weakened because of poor posture, what typically occurs is that the opposing or opposite muscle group becomes taut. So the balance comes in making sure that the taut muscles are stretched and the weak muscles become taut," she said.

Helpful exercises include shoulder squeezes, back bends, walking, and tightening and contracting the buttocks, she added.

Smile to reduce stress

Ar'nie said smiling brings about a sense of relaxation; it helps the immune system to work more efficiently and keeps the mind positive.

"Smile also can keep someone stay positive. All you have to do is try to think of something negative, but keep the smile, otherwise the test won't work.

"You will soon see that it is hard to combine the negative thought with the smile," she said.

"When we smile, our body and mind are sending us a message that everything is okay and smiling will help to lift depression and sadness, and smiling frequently works better than any type of medication to relieve you of stress," she said. - Bernama, September 19, 2013.

German literary critic and Holocaust survivor Reich-Ranicki dies aged 93

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 08:35 PM PDT

September 19, 2013
Latest Update: September 19, 2013 11:46 am

Marcel Reich-Ranicki (pic), Germany's best-known literary critic and a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, died on Wednesday aged 93, his publisher said.

Reich-Ranicki, a Jew born in Poland in 1920, almost perished at the Nazis' hands in World War Two but went on to become one of the leading advocates of German literature and culture during his long post-war career as a journalist, writer and critic.

He became a revered figure in his adopted country, hosting a popular literary talk show on television from 1988 to 2002 and dishing out sometimes withering verdicts on other writers.

Frank Schirrmacher of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, where Reich-Ranicki had been literary critic for many years, tweeted the news of his death and triggered an immediate flood of condolences from around the German-speaking world over the passing of a man widely known as "the pope of literature".

"We have lost an incomparable friend of literature but also of freedom and democracy," said Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"The fact that this son of a Jewish German-Polish family, who lost his parents and relatives in the death camps of the Nazis, still found his home in Germany and gave so much to our country is one of the remarkable events of the post-war period."

In his best-selling autobiography My Life, Reich-Ranicki recounted his move to Berlin shortly before the Nazis' rise to power, his family's subsequent deportation back to Poland and their experience of being forced to live in the Warsaw Ghetto.

The memoir explores the tension between his life-long love of German literature, music and philosophy and the horrors of 20th century German history.

His parents died in the Treblinka death camp but he survived to join the Polish resistance and became a communist. Disillusioned with communist Poland, he later emigrated to West Germany where he flourished as a literary critic.

Reich-Ranicki was famed for saying what he thought and did not spare even acclaimed authors such as Nobel Laureate Guenter Grass when he felt harsh words were merited.

"The Germans love him. He is their raging bull who has always refused to be a sacred cow," wrote Australian-born British broadcaster and writer Clive James, who tried to make Reich-Ranicki better known in the English-speaking world.

"Every living German writer wants his praise but it has always been hard to get: the reason, of course, why they would like to have it," James wrote. - Reuters, September 19, 2013.

Best-selling Jamie Ford on writing that second novel

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 06:21 PM PDT

September 19, 2013
Latest Update: September 19, 2013 09:29 am

Jamie Ford (pic) admits he was taken aback by the runaway success of his debut novel Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and was sidetracked for a while on his next work by the self-consciousness this produced.

But an invitation to write a story for a literary event led to the tale of an orphan boy who thinks he sees his mother in a movie, which grew into Songs of Willow Frost, out last week.

Ford revisits historical Seattle in his story of William Eng, who travels through the Depression-era city in search of his mother Willow, whom he has not seen since she was carried half-dead out of their apartment when he was a child.

Ford spoke with Reuters about living up to a debut book that spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list.

Q: How did you come up with the character of Willow?

A: She definitely took some time. I looked at that time period. I began with the orphanage and began with the character of William. This was coming 19 years after a flu epidemic and it seemed like a really volatile time. To place a Chinese woman here... I guess I always sympathise with characters who are caught between worlds. I'm half-Chinese. I either never feel Chinese enough or never feel Caucasian enough.

It just seemed as if there was a bunch of really interesting history and Willow was a great character to walk the reader through all that. Plus, the more I read about (actress) Anna May Wong, the more I felt for her being a Chinese woman who had dalliances with white men — producers, directors — but because of miscegenation laws she could never marry a Caucasian man and she was really shunned by a lot of the Chinese community.

Q: For this particular book, what were some of the difficulties of writing and what were the joys?

A: One of the difficulties was, you know, the second book. Just trusting my gut. That was hard. When I wrote Hotel nobody cared. When I wrote this one there was suddenly a high level of expectation. The joy was that I'm happy writing. I love the process, I love the research. Occasionally something unexpected will happen and a new character will walk onto the stage. I'll feel "Oh, I've made a new friend today". My wife didn't read the manuscript until it was completed but I remember telling her those moments when I really liked this character and I feel terrible for what I've done to this character. You engage with them. In my mind, my characters have immortal souls — they're in some parallel universe, doing their thing. When they get to that point where they seem fully formed, it's a very joyful moment.

Q: Did you expect Hotel to do as well as it did?

A: Yes, I expected it to be a tremendous success and I went out and bought a Porsche, knowing I could pay for it later. No, seriously, if I had sold 15,000 copies I would have been over the moon. My measure for success was to have someone buy it and like it that didn't share my same last name.

Q: Did it make it harder to write Willow?

A: It did. You know, I wrote another book in the middle. I changed the process a little bit because I was a little wary. With Hotel, nobody saw it until it was done. But when I was 100 pages in I showed (the other book) to my wife and my agent and got a lot of feedback. I left the door open and there were a lot of cooks in the kitchen and I ended up rewriting it for about 18 months. It just got to a point where it was all scar tissue. But in the meantime I would turn in a draft and then I would be researching the next book, which was this book. Once I read a couple pages of what I thought might be a good beginning to this book at the Humanities Washington forum, I showed those 12 hastily scribbled pages to my editor. She loved them and she said, if you'd like to take a break from the other project and pursue this, go for it. And I did. It feels as if I vented all that angst in that other book.

Q: Any advice for aspiring writers?

A: When I have aspiring writers or students ask me for advice, I've told them to go to a garage sale, buy three really horrible out-of-print books, pay no more than a quarter apiece for them and force yourself to read them with a writer's eye. By doing that, you'll notice mistakes or quick, sloppy writing or whatever you notice. And you'll notice that in your own writing. I found that if you think Michael Chabon is a brilliant writer and that all you read is Michael Chabon, when you try to write, it's like trying to lose weight and only looking at beauty magazines. It's really discouraging. That doesn't mean you should read crap all the time but don't try to play Mozart the first time you sit down at the piano. Start with scales. - Reuters, September 19, 2013.

Umno perlu keluar daripada persepsi politik wang

Posted: 18 Sep 2013 08:45 PM PDT

September 19, 2013

Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed is a three-term MP for Pulai and the new PAC chairman. Apart from being in the new politics, he also writes for The Malaysian Insider while debating other matters at www.jazlan.net

Seperti kata pepatah Inggeris, 'the more the merrier it will be'. – 19 September, 2013.

Masa untuk Chin Peng pulang luput hatta abu mayatnya, kata PM

OLEH HASBULLAH AWANG CHIK
September 19, 2013

- 19 September, 2013.

Projek IC masih diteruskan: Putrajaya nafi dakwaan Anwar
