Located on the ground floor of the low-cost Kampung Melayu flats, it looks like any other small and "low-profile" eatery that has no branch outlets.

It occupies two small shop lots and is furnished with simple portable tables and plastic chairs. The dishes are lined up on stainless steel counters along the five-foot way for patrons to inspect as they make their choices.

It does not look like a Michelin-starred restaurant, but its patrons will give it a five-star rating; the long line of customers at the restaurant every morning is proof.

The place is so famous, it has also been featured in television shows, newspapers, magazines and food blogs. It also has its own Facebook page.

"We have become more popular in this Internet age. People take photos of the restaurant, of our food and post them online to tell their friends. We have gained new customers, especially people from out of town, this way," said restaurant owner Abdul Nazir Abdul Razak, 58, in an interview with The Malaysian Insider.

"This is not very different from how our food first gained its good name. Nothing promotes food better than its taste and the word of mouth of patrons."

Nazir and his wife Zainab Md Eusoff, 50, run the outlet with the help of his sisters and a staff of over 20 people, who are split between the restaurant and his kitchen close by where the food is cooked.

The restaurant serves 15 dishes, which include fried chicken, rose chicken (ayam ros), curry chicken, squid, fish head curry, fish and squid roe, beef rendang, mutton, boiled eggs, lady's fingers and roti canai.

"The Raja Perlis enjoys our meat dishes with lady's fingers and boiled eggs. Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi enjoys the squid while the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar likes the fish head curry.

"They did not eat here but sent their people to buy and have the food packed. I have also taken orders for take-out from former prime ministers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's aides," Nazir said, adding that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak himself also came here when he visited the flats in May last year.

The good taste of the food at Kampung Melayu Nasi Kandar restaurant and its popularity came from Nazir's father, who opened the outlet in 1970 at the same location.

Nazir said his father, who was from Burma, learned how to cook nasi kandar dishes at a restaurant in Datuk Keramat, Penang, and when he had honed his skills, he opened up his own place.

"My mother was a Kampung Melayu girl and me and my five siblings all grew up here. I was in my early teens when my father set up the shop. My father was insistent about teaching us the business.

So did my two sisters, who are my head chefs together with my wife, but it is impossible to maintain the taste of the food prepared by my father. Different hands make different tastes," he said.

He said they have tried to keep to his father's recipes but it is still hard to replicate the good taste of his father's cooking.

Without revealing any secret family recipes, he said the ingredient that is most important in nasi kandar cooking is India onions, which make curries more delicious.

"They are not cheap, with a bag of 7kg Indian onions fetching RM19 and I need up to 10 bags a day. Getting the onions peeled is a lot of work too, which is why we have to get up at 2am everyday," he said, adding his family also grinds their own spices.

His father also put out spices to dry in the sun, Nazir said, which helped to make the food taste better, but with time constraint and his shortage of manpower, he could not do it today.

With his restaurant's fame, he said he had been encouraged to set up branches even as far as Kuala Lumpur but he did not have the backing of his four children.

"My two eldest are an engineer and a doctor. The other two are in university and Form Three. None of them are interested to learn to run the business. What is the point of opening another outlet?

"Most young people these days are not interested in jobs that require hard work. To run a restaurant, they would have to know how to cook, get supplies and even wash the dishes and clean up the mess.

We can't force children to do what we want these days," he said, adding that he used to work as a lab assistant at Universiti Sains Malaysia until he took an early pension 18 years ago to manage the restaurant full-time.

Nazir said he have not really thought about what will happen to his business, which has survived two generations, when he can no longer run it in the future.

He said even if he decides to sell it to another nasi kandar operator, the business may not survive long if the taste of the food changes or worse, deteriorates.

"But I do have a dream. If I can develop packed cooking pastes and spice mixes for nasi kandar dishes based on my family's old recipes, I think they will sell quite well.

"Maybe that will be a good family business plan for the future," he mused. - December 27, 2013.

Futuristic food: restaurant installs pneumatic tubes to deliver dishes to diners

C1 restaurant in Christchurch has installed a series of "food delivery" pipes which run from the kitchen into the café and deliver the establishment's signature Slider dish, comprising mini burgers and fries, to the clientele.

The installation process is already underway and will take approximately a year to complete.

Metal cases containing the dishes will eventually be shuttled under the floor and up through the table legs, to avoid the space being cluttered up with tubes.

"It's something we've had in the works since before we opened," said owner Sam Crofskey.

The café was destroyed in an earthquake in 2010 and has since been rebuilt, with several modifications.

"When we rebuilt the cafe, we did so with the goal of being the world's greatest cafe," said Crofskey. "A pneumatic burger tube is just one of the many points of difference that our business has."

The invention is the latest in a line of quirky food delivery systems across the restaurant industry.

These include the widespread trend of the sushi conveyor belt, the concept of ordering food directly from interactive tabletop surfaces and even robot waiter service at the Hajime restaurant in Japan.

Perhaps one of the most unorthodox approaches comes from the Ka Tron restaurant in Bangkok, where chickens are cooked, loaded into a catapult, fired across the restaurant and caught on a spike being held by a waiter riding a unicycle. - AFP/Relaxnews, December 27, 2013.

Goals from Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney wiped out the deficit before halftime before James Chester's own goal provided the champions with a seasonal gift of three points.

United climbed into sixth spot with 31 points before the later fixtures.

Hull had stunned the visitors with early goals from Chester and David Meyler.

United had Antonio Valencia sent off late on and almost paid dearly when Hull laid siege to their goal and Chester was denied a stoppage time equaliser by David de Gea's save.

Manchester City on alert for Luis Suarez threat

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 04:57 AM PST

December 26, 2013

Manchester City midfielder James Milner says that his side will be facing one of the country's outstanding players when they host Luis Suarez (pic) and English Premier League leaders Liverpool tonight.

Uruguayan striker Suarez has already scored 19 league goals this term despite having been suspended until the end of September for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last season.

His run of form has helped Liverpool go top with a run of four straight wins, in which they have scored 17 goals, while City, who could move above the Reds with a win, have scored 16 in a similar run of four victories.

As City look for a second title in three seasons, Milner feels that the visit of Liverpool, and the following home game against Crystal Palace, offer City a real opportunity to take charge in the title race.

"(Suarez) is having a pretty good season," said the England midfielder.

"He's a dangerous player. We have come up against dangerous players so far this season, but he will definitely be right up there, so we will need to keep him quiet."

For the first time in the post-1992 Premier League era, just two points separate the top five teams on Boxing Day, and the erosion of Arsenal's seven-point lead has also given hope to seventh-place Tottenham and eighth-place Manchester United.

Arsenal's bruising 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea on Monday left Liverpool top at Christmas for the first time since 2008.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers remains without Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Jose Enrique due to injury, but in Suarez he can call upon the outstanding player of the season so far.

City's own leading man, Sergio Aguero, is currently sidelined with a calf complaint, and having seen Liverpool rout Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 in their last away game, manager Manuel Pellegrini predicts a "very difficult" encounter.

"Liverpool is a very good team and Suarez is in a very good moment," said the Chilean.

"But I think this Premier League, we are just finishing the first half, in two more games.

"And this Premier League will not just be Liverpool and Manchester City. Five or six teams will fight until the end."

Second-place Arsenal, behind Liverpool on goal difference, will hope to capitalise on any slip-ups by Rodgers's side when they visit London rivals West Ham United.

Fourth-place Chelsea, meanwhile, host Swansea City, with fifth-place Everton hosting bottom club Sunderland.

Chelsea have failed to sparkle during the first half of the season, but with Liverpool only two points ahead of them, captain John Terry knows that Jose Mourinho's side remain very much in contention.

"We all know, and the fans have seen it home and away, that we can get better," Terry told Chelsea TV.

"So whilst everyone is dropping points around us, hopefully in the new year we have to start firing and put ourselves on a good run of games.

"If we do that we're more than capable of pulling away from everyone."

Tottenham, four points below the top five, host West Bromwich Albion, with Tim Sherwood set to experience life as a full-time Premier League manager for the first time after being appointed as the permanent successor to Andre Villas-Boas on Monday.

Defending champions United, meanwhile, will look to close the eight-point gap that separates them from arch rivals Liverpool when they visit Hull City.

United have won four consecutive games in all competitions since the shock of successive home defeats by Everton and Newcastle United, and manager David Moyes hopes it will stand his side in good stead against a Hull team who have only lost once at home all season.

"It will be a tough game, that's for sure, but we have got ourselves on a winning run and hopefully we can continue that," he said.

Elsewhere tonight, Malky Mackay will take charge of Cardiff City against Southampton for the first time since being granted a stay of execution by owner Vincent Tan.

Mackay looked destined for the sack after being told by Tan to either resign or face dismissal, but chairman Mehmet Dalman revealed on Monday that the club are working to resolve the situation through talks.

"The players have trained as they always do," Mackay said.

"We have big games to prepare for and no matter what goes on, that's my number one focus for this club and it always will be." - AFP, December 26, 2013.

How minimum wage affects you

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 12:04 AM PST

BY HEATHER BUNG
December 26, 2013

Next year, Malaysia will join more than 150 other countries that already have minimum wage laws in place. However, many business are calling for more time to comply with the rule, says iMoney. – December 26, 2013.Next year, Malaysia will join more than 150 other countries that already have minimum wage laws in place. However, many business are calling for more time to comply with the rule, says iMoney. – December 26, 2013.The minimum wage policy is consistent with Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Tun Razak's aspirations to transform the country into a high-level income country. Although the ruling was gazetted in July 2012, it was supposed to take effect January this year. However, many businesses have urged for more time to comply to the ruling and as a result, the government said it would fully enforce the law only by January 2014.

Come the new year, Malaysia will join more than 150 other countries that already have minimum wage laws in place. The policy sets a minimum wage of RM900 per month (RM4.33 per hour) for Peninsular Malaysia and RM800 per month (RM3.85 per hour) for Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan, covering both the local and foreign workforce, except for domestic workers such as domestic helpers and gardeners.

According to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the minimum wage policy is estimated to benefit about 27% of workers nationally. On average, the affected workers in Peninsular Malaysia are expected to receive a 33% increase in wages, while those in East Malaysia would be given a 38% increment. By economic sector, the agriculture industry is expected to be the most affected, as 43% of workers in the sector received wages that were below the minimum wage prior to the implementation of the policy.

If you think the minimum wage policy does not affect you, here are a few reasons why you should care.

1) Higher costs of business

If you are a business owner, you can expect a higher labour costs, no doubt. Not only the low-wage workers on your pay roll now needs an upward revision of salary, but this could also mean a whole restructuring of the reward system in your organisation.

On the other hand, you may see an increase in productivity of your employees. However, you may have to tweak how you measure the performance of your employees.

Furthermore, in the longer run, your firm may be encouraged to automate operations or acquire newer technologies that could enhance production capacity.

2) Higher cost of living

Following higher costs of business, consumers can expect pricier product and services. On the other hand, they can also expect better services as a result of increased staff productivity.

On the back of reduced subsidies and GST implementation, the minimum wage effect would then be another factor to push cost of living as a consequence of higher costs of doing business.

3) Increased purchasing power

Low-wage workers, especially, will have a better quality of life as now they have better purchasing power. Although this group of consumers is unlikely to have mortgages or loans, more money will be spent on necessities and maybe discretionary items too. This would be beneficial for the country's growth, which is largely driven by domestic consumption. Furthermore, economists are of the view that low-income groups tend to have a higher marginal propensity to consume versus the middle income segment.

4) Less poverty, lower crime rate

Less poverty could also mean lower crime rate as wealth is better distributed among the members of society.  If Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) estimate of 27% of the local workforce to benefit from the policy is taken as guidance, the impact should be meaningful.

5) Increased unemployment rate

Based on simple economics of supply and demand, the imposition of a minimum wage will cause low-skilled labourers to lose their jobs, creating unemployment. This indirectly can also cause social problems if not rectified such as creating more jobs or subsidising the unemployed until they get jobs again.

Reports suggest that up to four million jobs are threatened due to cutbacks and closures following the implementation of minimum wage policy.

However, those who disagree say any adjustment to employment as a result of the minimum wage policy will likely be temporary, as dislocated workers would be reabsorbed into the workforce given the relatively tight labour market. According to external data, job vacancies have been on an increasing trend since 2004, while Malaysia's unemployment rate has remained consistently low, with a historical average of 3.3% over the recent two decades.

6) Increased government bill

In developed economies, the government must come up with a compensation system for the unemployed as a result of the implementation of minimum wage. It raises the question if the federal government, which is already challenged with tightening the fiscal deficit, will need to fork out more money to support the system.

Good news is that findings from a survey conducted by BNM in May 2012 suggest that the impact of the minimum wage policy will be manageable. Over 90% of firms that would be affected indicated they would not retrench workers in response to the policy, while only 25% indicated a reduction in hiring.

7) Economy moves to higher-income

The policy is consistent with the Government's objective of transforming Malaysia into a high-income and high-productivity economy; the minimum wage policy provides incentives to both firms and workers to undertake productivity-enhancing measures.

This will result in more high-skilled workers and investments in automation and newer technologies that could enhance production capacity, instead of relying on low cost labour.

As such, some argue Malaysia, which has long offered competitive costs in doing businesses, risks losing its competitiveness to other neighbouring countries and see a dip in foreign investments as a consequence. – iMoney.my, December 26, 2013.

Indonesia builds sanctuary to save world’s rarest rhino

Posted: 25 Dec 2013 07:48 PM PST

December 26, 2013

This handout picture recently released by Ujung Kulon National Park to AFP and taken in 2012 shows two rhinos at Indonesia's Ujung Kulon National Park. – AFP pic, December 26, 2013.This handout picture recently released by Ujung Kulon National Park to AFP and taken in 2012 shows two rhinos at Indonesia's Ujung Kulon National Park. – AFP pic, December 26, 2013.On a leaf-covered dirt path overlooking lush paddy fields in western Indonesia, the world's rarest rhino had left a trail of hoof prints in the soft mud and bite marks on foliage.

For people seeking a glimpse of the Javan rhino – revered in local folklore as Abah Gede, or the Great Father – such small signs are likely to be the closest they get.

There are thought to be only around 50 of the animals left in existence, all living in the wild in Ujung Kulon National Park, an area of stunning natural beauty on the western tip of Indonesia's main island of Java.

But now conservationists are hoping that the country's first ever Javan rhino sanctuary, which will open in the park in the coming months, can pull the animal back from the brink of extinction.

The shy creature, whose folds of loose skin give it the appearance of wearing armour plating, once numbered in the thousands and roamed across Southeast Asia.

But, like other rhino species across the world, poaching and human encroachment on its habitat has led to a dramatic population decline, with the International Union for Conservation of Nature saying the animal is "making its last stand".

The new sanctuary will encompass 12,600 acres of lush rainforest, freshwater streams and mud holes in the park, which is a Unesco World Heritage site.

It is not due to open until March but park officials say that from hoof prints and bite marks, they believe nine rhinos have already wandered into new areas set aside for them.

"It means our scheme to turn this sanctuary into a comfortable home for them is working," the park's habitat manager Rusdianto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP.

The rhinos were already living mainly in one corner of the park.

But the new sanctuary has expanded the area suitable for them and relocated farmers who were living there to reduce the chances of animal-human conflict.

An electric fence is also being constructed – the final piece of work that needs to be completed – to mark the boundary and prevent the rhinos from straying out of the sanctuary and humans from coming in.

Park officials, who are government employees, have also been planting suitable food for the rhinos. During a recent visit by AFP, workers were seen clearing palm trees from the area and replacing them with shrubs and small trees.

"We hope this sanctuary will hasten breeding and lead to more births of this treasured rare animal," park chief Moh Haryono told AFP.

"In a more enclosed space, the male and female rhino will have more opportunities to frolic and mate freely."

Rhinos around the world are under threat

Yet setting up the sanctuary, which is government-run but fully funded by US-based charity the International Rhino Foundation, has been no easy task.

It was originally due to open in 2011 but was held up due to red tape, a common problem in the sprawling Indonesian archipelago, which has a huge and often inefficient bureaucracy.

Work also stalled for a year due to protests from residents demanding compensation for farmland they had to give up, as well as from local animal activists who felt the use of heavy machinery to build the fence threatened the environment.

However all obstacles now seem to have been overcome and, barring any last-minute hold-ups, the sanctuary should officially open soon.

Nevertheless it is just a small step in an uphill battle to save the Javan rhino. Officials in Ujung Kulon believe there were 51 of the rhinos in 2012, including eight calves, basing their estimate on images captured by hidden cameras.

They hope the true figure may be in the 70s and will have a new estimate once data for 2013 has been collated.

The case of the Javan rhinoceros highlights the plight of rhinos across the world, with other species also deemed to be under threat and some subspecies already believed to have died out.

Poaching in particular represents a severe threat, with rhino horns used in traditional Asian medicine fetching ever higher prices on the black market despite a lack of scientific evidence showing horn has any medicinal value.

In Indonesia, fewer than 100 of the critically endangered Sumatran rhinos remain; in 2011 the IUCN declared a rhino subspecies in western Africa extinct; and the group has said the Central African northern white rhino is "possibly extinct".

Asia has stepped up efforts to save the region's dwindling rhino populations, with representatives from several countries in October attending a conference on the issue on the western Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Countries represented, including Indonesia, Nepal and India, pledged to take steps to grow their rhino populations by three percent annually.

For the Javan rhino, its population already decimated, the threat is no longer poaching but food scarcity, illness and the risk of natural disasters in an archipelago where earthquakes and landslides are common, according to WWF Indonesia.

Despite the myriad threats, wildlife officials are hopeful the new sanctuary is a step in the right direction.

They have also been heartened by strong support from the local community.

Any effort to save the Great Father is applauded in an area where centuries-old beliefs persist and intertwine with the vast majority's Muslim faith.

"We must do all we can to prevent the Javan rhino from becoming extinct," Suhaya, a 67-year-old farmer who goes by one name, told AFP.

"Locals here believe that Abah Gede must not vanish from the face of the Earth, or disaster will befall us." – AFP, December 26, 2013.

Kadar simpanan asas baharu KWSP berkuat kuasa Januari ini

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 02:42 AM PST

December 26, 2013

Apatah lagilah jika kita berkelulusan UPSR.

Adakah mereka fikir tentang keselesaan anak kita?

Saya bercerita tentang golongan marhaen.

Apatah lagilah jika kita berkelulusan UPSR.
