Manassero clinches Singapore Open after playoff

SINGAPORE, Nov 11 — Italian teenager Matteo Manassero displayed all the nerve and experience of a seasoned veteran to edge out Louis Oosthuizen on the third hole of a playoff and claim a thrilling Singapore Open victory today.

The first two days of the US$6 million (RM18 million) co-sanctioned event were dampened by lengthy storm delays but with the weather gods smiling down on the Sentosa Golf Club, the tournament reached a gripping climax over the final two rounds.

As an impressive Manassero threatened to run away with the event on a day when he ended up playing 36 holes, the 2010 Open Championship winner Oosthuizen emerged from the pack and could and should have won the tournament in the playoff.

The duo birdied the par-five 18th in regulation to finish locked on 13-under 271 and after they repeated the feat on the first extra hole, Oosthuizen had a four-foot birdie putt to claim the title on the next but his nervous effort horseshoed around the back of the cup.

Both men found the fairway on their third attempt at deciding a winner, with the South African's approach landing short and left of the flag before Manassero ripped a beauty that rolled down off a slope to within 10 feet of the hole.

Oosthuizen's eagle putt curled above the hole and his opponent made no mistake, picking up a third European Tour event before his 20th birthday with an assured putt into the middle of the cup that was met with a joyous roar from the packed gallery.

"It has been an extremely long day, the adrenaline kept me going and the playoff was just a great honor to play with Louis," Manassero told reporters.

"It's the first playoff of my career and it has just been amazing really. Of course to end it with an eagle was great."

McIlroy surge

Almost forgotten in the mayhem was a brilliant final round six-under 65 from world number one Rory McIlroy that lifted the Briton up to third place on 10-under and secured the European Tour order-of-merit title with two events to spare.

"I played well all week but just didn't convert the birdie chances I gave myself," said the Northern Irishman, who was cheered on all week by tennis-playing girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

"I missed a lot of putts over the last four days. If I had holed a few more it would have been a different story. I am very happy how I played today and how I finished."

Halfway leader Thomas Bjorn of Denmark, who closed with a 68, finished a shot further back, and three-times Singapore Open champion Adam Scott of Australia was tied for fifth alongside Italy's Francesco Molinari on eight-under 276.

However, the day belonged to Manassero, who arrived at the course at the crack of dawn to complete his third round and immediately recorded four consecutive birdies on the way to forging a two-shot lead heading into the final 18 holes.

"Fortunately, the key was starting really well this morning after coming back on the course and I started with some birdies in a row which was very good and gave me a lot of adrenaline to go forward," Manassero added.

The 19-year-old Italian stretched his lead to three strokes by the turn as his closest challengers began to wilt in the scorching heat but Oosthuizen was made of sterner stuff and chipped away at Manassero's advantage until he took the lead with his birdie at the last.

Manassero, three groups back of Oosthuizen, had been in defensive mode since the fourth hole and after dropping a shot on the 15th, he needed to attack again and his short birdie putt on the 72nd hole set up the thrilling playoff. — Reuters

McIlroy’s late flourish not enough to hide disappointment

SINGAPORE, Nov 11 — World number one Rory McIlroy finished with a flourish at the Singapore Open today when a monster eagle putt at the par-five 18th lifted the Briton up to third place, but like all champions, he was disappointed not to win.

McIlroy struggled to maintain his focus and rhythm at a tournament hampered by three lengthy weather delays on the first two days but he was back to his brilliant best on Sunday, carding a six-under 65 to finish on 10-under 274.

"I played really well this afternoon... no bogeys and finished with an eagle on the last it was very nice," McIlroy told reporters after ending the US$6 million (RM18 million) co-sanctioned event three shots adrift of Matteo Manassero of Italy.

McIlroy's third place finish was good enough to secure the European Tour order-of-merit title with two events remaining, meaning he has topped the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic, but his job was made much easier with the absence of his nearest rivals in Singapore.

Consistency award

"The money list has been cheapened a little bit by not having the leading players at events towards the end of the year," he added.

"It's still an award for consistency and you need to play well throughout the year in all the tournaments you attend.

"I am going to end up playing 13 or 14 events on the European Tour this year. That's obviously a lot less than a lot of other people but I have played in the bigger tournaments with the higher prize funds, which has allowed me to get to the top."

McIlroy will defend his Hong Kong Open title next week and while he goes there on the back of a second and a third in his last two events, he is still hopeful of picking up another victory before closing out his 2012 campaign.

"Finishing in the top two or three isn't too bad but I said I wanted to win at least once more before the end of the season and I still have two more tournaments in which to do that."

Following the season-ending Dubai World Championships McIlroy will take a break and that start looking at how he can make himself a better player in 2013.

"I will keep working on different aspects of the game to improve next year,' he added. "I feel I have got a lot more comfortable at hitting left to right which has made a huge difference to right-hand pin positions.

"It's been nice that year-after-year my results have improved and I would like to keep that going and like to feel I am a better golfer next year than I was this year.

"I have got more shots, am more experienced and more consistent." — Reuters

Rolling Stones release greatest hits album

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 07:35 AM PST

PARIS, Nov 11 — The Rolling Stones on Monday release a greatest hits album titled "Grrr!" featuring two new tracks recorded over the summer in Paris, as fans count down to a string of 50th-anniversary concerts.

'Grrr!' album cover. — AFP/Relaxnews

The first new single, "Doom and Gloom" was released online last month, and is available to stream from the band's official website, www.rollingstones.com, while the second, "One More Shot", was put online on Thursday.

"Dirty, swaggering and perfectly Stonesy," is how the Daily Telegraph's reviewer described the latest track. The songs are the Stones's first new recordings together in seven years.

"Grrr!" will be released in several formats, including 50- and 80-track box sets, featuring such classics as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Jumpin' Jack Flash" or "Honky Tonk Women".

Celebrating a half-century in rock and roll this year, the Stones played their first concerts in five years at two small venues in Paris late last month.

They have announced four major concerts in Britain and the United States to mark the anniversary.

But they have run into criticism from fans over the ticket prices, with London seats costing hundreds of pounds on the official website, and tickets appearing on re-sale websites for more than £13,000 (RM) each.

The Rolling Stones play London's O2 Arena on November 25 and 29, followed by gigs at New Jersey's Newark Prudential Centre, just outside New York, on December 13 and 15.

Currently rehearsing in Paris, the band have hinted there could be more shows to come. — AFP/Relaxnews

MTV awards bring pop glitz to Frankfurt

FRANKFURT, Nov 11 — The MTV Europe Music Awards bring the pop circus to Frankfurt on Sunday, with Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna leading the nominations and the late Whitney Houston to be honoured with a Global Icon award.

Houston, who was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub on February 11, will be the third artist to be given the award, following Bon Jovi and Queen in 2010 and 2011.

"Whitney Houston may be gone, but her legend lives on," the organizers said.

MTV said it would transform the inside of the 100-year-old Festhalle venue into a circus arena, and host Heidi Klum said she may swing from a trapeze.

"It will be a magical, visual feast," the German model and presenter promised ahead of the event.

One of this year's most eagerly anticipated performances is dance sensation Psy with his record-breaking hit "Gangnam Style". He will become the first South Korean artist to perform at the annual awards, one of the pop industry's biggest nights outside the United States.

The song, which is up for the Best Video award, has been viewed more than 670 million times on YouTube and received a record-breaking 4.9 million "likes" on Facebook since being released in mid-July.

Klum, who this year filed for divorce from singer husband Seal, is ready for the horse riding-inspired dance.

"Now I know how to dance Gangnam Style!" she posted on Twitter yesterday, with a picture of herself and Psy in matching blue tuxedo jackets.

Rocking the red carpet

Despite being billed as the Europe Music Awards, the majority of nominees are traditionally North American, and 2012 is no exception.

Alongside Psy, acts due to take the stage at the show include country singer Taylor Swift, 14-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys, the Killers, newly reformed No Doubt and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Before the show kicks off, stars taking to the red carpet will include rapper Ludacris, who will debut his new video "Rest of My Life".

Heading the nominations is party-loving Rihanna, with nods in six categories, including Best Song and Best Video for "We Found Love".

Following close behind with five nominations is country star Swift, Katy Perry with four, while Lady Gaga, who cleaned up last year with four prizes, is in the running for three awards.

Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, who has reportedly just broken up with girlfriend Selena Gomez, is up for four awards, including Best Male and Best Pop.

Rihanna is favorite for Best Song and Best Female, according to odds offered by British bookmakers William Hill, while Gangnam Style is tipped to win Best Video.

The EMA awards were last held in Frankfurt in 2001. Last year's awards in Belfast attracted 23 million viewers on all platforms and 158 million votes worldwide.

Following are the main nominations in 2012:

BEST SONG: Carly Rae Jepsen/Call Me Maybe; Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris/We Found Love; Gotye/Somebody That I Used To Know; Pitbull feat. Chris Brown/International Love; fun. feat. Janelle MonĂ¡e/We Are Young

Charles Darwin gets 4,000 write-in votes in Georgia

ATLANTA, Nov 11 — A Georgia congressman who attacked the theory of evolution found himself with an unlikely opponent in Tuesday's US election, when 4,000 voters in one county cast write-in ballots for the 19th century father of evolution, British naturalist Charles Darwin.

In a September 27 speech, Paul Broun, a physician and member of the US House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee, called evolution and the Big Bang Theory, "lies straight from the pit of hell".

Since Broun, a Republican, had no opposition in the general election, a University of Georgia plant biology professor, Jim Leebens-Mack, and others started a write-in campaign for Darwin, the father of the theory of evolution.

"We don't feel our interests are being best served by an anti-science fundamentalist representing us on the Science, Space and Technology Committee," Leebens-Mack told Reuters on Friday.

The write-in votes in Athens-Clarke County will not count officially since Darwin was never certified as a write-in candidate, but Leebens-Mack hopes the campaign will encourage a strong candidate, Democrat or Republican, to challenge Broun in 2014.

"I think there could be Democratic opposition, but even more likely is having a rational Republican who understands issues like global warming, scientific reasoning more generally," said Leebens-Mack.

Broun received 16,980 votes in Athens-Clarke County, home of the University of Georgia, Broun's undergraduate alma mater.

Broun's office issued a statement on Friday that did not directly address Darwin, saying that the congressman "looks forward to representing the... constitutional conservative principles" of his constituents.

The statement also noted that Broun "received a higher level of support from his constituents in Athens-Clarke County this election cycle than in any of his previous campaigns". — Reuters

Denver mailman mistakes corpse for Halloween decoration

DENVER, Nov 11 — The United States Postal Service acknowledged on Friday that one of its mail carriers did not report a corpse at a Denver home because he mistook the body for a Halloween display.

"We do know the carrier delivered mail to the house that day, and he remembered seeing something he thought was related to Halloween," the postal service said in a statement.

"When the carrier learned that was not the case, he was shocked and extremely upset."

The local ABC News affiliate reported that the dead man, Dale Porch, 46, collapsed and died November 2 on his porch steps after returning home from his night shift job.

Relatives of Porch could not be reached for comment by Reuters.

The postal service called the incident "an unfortunate situation" that probably would not have happened any other time of year.

"Our carriers have a long history of assisting customers in neighborhoods across the country each and every day, and that holds true for our letter carriers here in Denver," the statement said.

The unidentified carrier is a "conscientious and dedicated employee" who remains on the job, the post office said, and any action that may be taken against him will be handled internally. — Reuters

Philip Roth says he is done with writing

Roth says he had always found writing difficult. — Reuters pic

PARIS, Nov 11 — Seminal American author Philip Roth, whose novels explored modern Jewish-American life, has told a French magazine that he will write no more books because he has lost his passion for it.

The author of such novels as American Pastoral, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize, and Portnoy's Complaint slipped his retirement announcement into an interview last month with French magazine Les Inrocks.

On Friday, Houghton Mifflin confirmed his decision.

"He told me it was true," said Lori Glazer, executive director of publicity at the publisher.

Roth, 79, one of the world's most revered novelists and a frequent contender for the Nobel Prize for Literature, said he had not written for three years.

"To tell you the truth, I'm done," Roth was quoted as telling Les Inrocks.

"Nemesis will be my last book," he said of his 2010 short novel set against a fictional polio epidemic in Newark, New Jersey, in 1944.

The novella Goodbye, Columbus catapulted Roth onto the American literary scene in 1959 with its satirical depiction of class and religion in American life.

Published along with five other short stories, it won the National Book Award in 1960. He again received that award in 1995 for Sabbath's Theater.

Roth, who has written some 25 novels, told Les Inrocks that he had always found writing difficult and that he wanted nothing more to do with reading, writing or talking about books.

He said that when he was 74, he started re-reading his favorite novels by authors Ernest Hemingway, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and others, and then re-read his own novels.

"I wanted to see whether I had wasted my time writing," he explained.

"After that, I decided that I was done with fiction. I no longer want to read, to write, I don't even want to talk about it anymore," he was quoted as saying.

"I have dedicated my life to the novel: I studied, I taught, I wrote, I read - to the exclusion of almost everything else.

"Enough is enough! I no longer feel this fanaticism to write that I have experienced all my life. The idea of trying to write again is impossible," Roth told the magazine.

Roth's four most recent novels, Everyman, Indignation, The Humbling and Nemesis, have been short works, often focusing on ageing, physical decline, depression and death.

New Jersey-born Roth is best known for his semi-autobiographical and unreliable alter-ego Nathan Zuckerman, who appeared in nine of his novels.

Roth told Les Inrocks that he had spent most of his time in recent years preparing material for his biographer, Blake Bailey.

"If I had a choice, I would prefer that there is no biography written about me, but there will be biographies after my death so (I wanted) to be sure that one of them is correct," Roth was quoted as saying.

Roth said he had asked his literary executors and his agent to destroy his personal archives after his death once Bailey has finished the biography.

"I don't want my personal papers hanging around everywhere," he said. — Reuters

Pemimpin-pemimpin politik jangan kiasu

Posted: 10 Nov 2012 03:43 PM PST

Sebaliknya, keadaan bertambah buruk.

Mereka berdua cukup berlapang dada.

Apabila mereka bertanya pendapat saya tentang Yuna. Yuna? Siapa Yuna?

Adakah lagu dan albumnya setanding album Joni Mitchell bertajuk "Ladies of the Canyon" tahun 1970 dulu?

Juga lagu-lagu Bush seperti "Wuthering Height", "Breathing", "The Man With The Child in His Eyes" antaranya.

Muzik bukanlah hanya sekadar muzik.
