MANCHESTER, England, Dec 9 — Robin van Persie's stoppage-time free kick snatched a 3-2 victory for Manchester United in a pulsating derby at champions Manchester City to send them six points clear at the top of the Premier League today.

Wayne Rooney put the visitors ahead in the 16th minute against the run of play with a softly struck effort into the bottom left corner before doubling his tally just before the half-hour mark.

City pulled one back through Yaya Toure on 60 minutes before levelling in the 86th minute with Pablo Zabaleta's sweetly struck shot but any thoughts of a draw were short-lived when Van Persie launched a free kick into the bottom left corner.

United's celebrations were marred when defender Rio Ferdinand was left bloodied above his left eye after being struck by an object thrown from the crowd.

The result ends City's almost two-year unbeaten home run in the league and puts United in the driving seat in the title race with 39 points from 16 matches, while City are on 33. — Reuters

Russian assembly set for tough response to US rights bill

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 07:31 AM PST

MOSCOW, Dec 9 — Russia's foreign minister urged parliament on Sunday to agree a tough response to a U.S. law punishing Russian human rights violators, increasing the risk of a chill in relations with Washington.

Moscow announced restrictions on meat imports from the United States on Friday although it denied suggestions it had done so in response to the U.S. Senate's passage a day earlier of the so-called Magnitsky Act.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the parliament should now respond and Alexei Pushkov, a senior parliamentary deputy from President Vladimir Putin's party, said the State Duma lower house would discuss retaliatory measures this week.

"As this is an attempt to interfere in our internal affairs, I would be very interested in a reaction by the state Duma that would be collective, on a multi-party basis and representing all party groups," Lavrov said in televised remarks.

Puskhov, who heads the chamber's foreign affairs committee, said a majority of lawmakers wanted a tough response, calling for visa restrictions on U.S. citizens who have violated human rights. He did not say who this might include or what rights violations they were accused of making.

"The Americans have reminded us about the way Russia is viewed on Capitol Hill," Yuri Ushakov, a foreign policy adviser to Putin, was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

"Stereotypes about our country persist and no one can get rid of them. So the Americans have made an extremely unfriendly move against us."

President Barack Obama, who launched a "reset" in relations with Russia less than four years ago, is likely to sign the Magnitsky legislation, which will test his and Putin's resolve to improve relations since both won elections this year.

The new US legislation would bar visas for Russian officials linked to the 2009 death in custody of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who accused federal investigators of stealing $230 million from the state.

Lavrov told US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday that Russia would bar entry for Americans "guilty of crude human rights abuses."

Moscow has also warned it would respond with "asymmetrical" measures. Areas in which the United States wants Russian cooperation most include nuclear arms control and Iran.

Damage may be limited

But there are also signs that Putin, back in the presidency since May, wants to limit the damage to relations with Russia's former Cold War enemy.

Political analysts say the Magnitsky Act will probably not derail Russian assistance on Afghanistan, affect diplomacy aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear programme, or deepen disputes over U.S. missile defence and the conflict in Syria.

Moscow is trying to ensure its interests are protected in Syria. Despite frequent denials that it is shifting position, Moscow appears to be preparing for when President Bashar al-Assad leaves power.

The Senate approved the "Magnitsky Act" as part of a broader bill to lift a Cold War-era restriction and grant Russia "permanent normal trade relations, " or PNTR.

Despite Russian denials, analysts saw a link between the Magnitsky Act and Moscow's announcement of restrictions on meat imports from several countries, including the United States.

In a joint statement on Saturday, US Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Russia's new requirement for imported beef and pork to be certified free of ractopamine, a feed additive used in the US meat industry but banned in some other countries, appeared to be a violation of Moscow's obligations to the World Trade Organisation.

The move could potentially make producers from the United States, which exports more than US$500 million (RM1.6 billion) a year worth of beef and pork to Russia, less competitive, giving an advantage to China and the European Union, where ractopamine is banned.

Russia's plant and health regulator, Rosselkhoznadzor, said it had warned over a year ago about the "inadmissibility" of meat with ractopamine to Russia. — Reuters

British astronomer Patrick Moore dead aged 89

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 07:29 AM PST

LONDON, Dec 9 — Astronomer Patrick Moore, renowned for his work mapping the Moon's surface and for having popularised his subject with the British public, died today at the age of 89, friends and colleagues announced.

The eccentric astronomer, whose research was used by the United States and the Soviets in their space programmes, "passed away peacefully at 12:25 pm (1225 GMT)", at his home in Selsey on the southern English coast, they said in a statement.

He had succumbed to an infection, the statement said.

"After a short spell in hospital last week, it was determined that no further treatment would benefit him, and it was his wish to spend his last days in his own home."

Moore had fronted the monthly BBC programme "The Sky At Night" since 1957, making him the world's longest-running presenter of the same television show.

He believed he was the only person to have met Orville Wright, the first man to fly; Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space; and Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon.

Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2001 for "services to the popularisation of science and to broadcasting".

Besides his skill at explaining the intricacies of the universe, his monocle, wit and idiosyncratic style of speech endeared him to an army of fans spanning the generations.

The statement from his friends said Moore died in the company of close friends and carers and his cat Ptolemy.

"Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in, a few weeks ago," it said.

"He was able to perform on his world record-holding TV programme "The Sky at Night" right up until the most recent episode.

"His executors and close friends plan to fulfil his wishes for a quiet ceremony of interment, but a farewell event is planned for what would have been Patrick's 90th birthday in March 2013."

At the age of eight he was given a 1908 typewriter on which his multitude of books and papers were written throughout his life.

Besides his astronomy, writing and broadcasting, Moore was a skilled xylophone player and a useful cricketer. — AFP/Relaxnews

Barbie, a timeless icon

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 04:31 AM PST

WASHINGTON, Dec 9 — While controversial silhouettes promoting unrealistic body images in the media are the targets of many angry parents, Barbie's plastic perfection remains an undisputed favourite of girls around the world. Ruling the toy realm for 53 years, Mattel's figurehead doll will once again top holiday wish lists and feature under many a Christmas tree in 2012.

"Barbie Photo Fashion"— AFP/Relaxnews

According to Franck Mathais, spokesperson for French toy store chain La Grande RĂ©crĂ©, the Barbie Princess and Popstar Tori doll will be a bestseller this year — and so will other new products like the Barbie Photo Fashion doll, who comes with a digital camera to let children change the design on the doll's T-shirt.

A toy star's continual evolution

On March 9, 1959, at the New York International Toy Fair, Ruth Handler presented a doll created for her daughter Barbara, the toy's namesake. Contrasting with the other toys for children of the time and the dominance of baby dolls, the adult-bodied doll made a splash. On the market, she competed with Bild Lilli, her German counterpart, commonly seen as the inspiration for Barbie.

Just a few years after its creation, the doll already showed her capacity of adapting with the times. In 1963, she became an astronaut as a nod to the first time a woman went to space. "Then there was this iconic moment when she became an airplane pilot, which conveyed the idea that women were able to do a man's job," outlines Frédérique Tutt, an NPD Group toy market expert.

Within a few years, the doll's body changed, her résumé grew longer and her voice was (literally) heard. Two years ago, Mattel's doll entered the realm of technology. Barbie was equipped with a camera allowing children to direct their own short videos. "Mattel reinvents the Barbie doll each year to keep on trend," explains Tutt. And therein lies the secret of Barbie's longevity.

A friend for life

Another key factor in Barbie's enduring appeal is that "Barbie follows the evolution of a little girl as she grows up. The whole line was created to fit each age group," notes Tutt. To fit with the evolution of her fans, the little plastic blonde switches jobs. Barbie, a gift suitable for 3-year-olds, dresses as a princess to wow the 4-5 age segment. Then she becomes a role model for the 5-6-year-olds, as she takes care of her little sisters, Skipper and Stacie. Ultimately, she becomes a beauty icon wearing all kinds of outfits, turning the rooms of kids aged 7-8 into fashion runways.

Each year, Mattel delights children with a string of new accessories, lavish houses, camping cars, yachts and trendy clothing. But above all, the brand thinks outside the box to constantly find new doll concepts. Dolls are the really strong performers in the Barbie line, according to Tutt.

A toy for all budgets

Barbie has been lucky enough to wear designer clothes by Christian Louboutin, Karl Lagerfeld and Paco Rabanne, but the Barbie line has a wide range of price points. Barbie adapts to all budgets. The lines traditionally start "with a bathing suit Barbie. The smaller the amount of fabric, the lower the price. Then you have the dolls with accessories, and above that, collectible editions," Tutt outlines, adding, "Barbie's strength is her ability to sell all year round."

A hit since the 1960s, Barbie is associated with cherished childhood memories, with many grandmothers and mothers saving their precious dolls for their own offspring. — AFP/Relaxnews

Half a century on, Rolling Stones rock Brooklyn

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 01:13 AM PST

NEW YORK, Dec 9 — Fifty years since their first London jam sessions, the Rolling Stones kicked off the US leg of a brief anniversary tour with a vibrant show in New York on Saturday that belied their years - wrinkles and nostalgia aside.

Drummers wearing gorilla masks warmed up the crowd packed into Brooklyn's Barclays Center as black-clad women swung their long tresses in rhythm.

Mick Jagger pranced, shimmied and howled his way through the 2-1/2 hour show, pausing to reminisce about the band's history and its first New York concert at Carnegie Hall in 1964.

For a group whose early years were punctuated by quarrels and occasional brushes with the law, the biggest controversy ahead of Saturday's show was the price of seats - up to $800, and as much as 10 times that amount on websites offering last-minute tickets.

In those days, milk was cheaper and "tickets to the Rolling Stones was - well, I'm not going to go there," Jagger acknowledged.

The band's last major tour was in 2007 and the latest reunion almost didn't happen, owing in part to a spat between Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards over comments Richards made about the singer in a 2010 autobiography.

Richards joked in a recent interview: "We can't get divorced - we're doing it for the kids."

A tribute video opened Saturday's proceedings featuring celebrities heaping praise on the band.

"They're great songs to do bad things to," said actor Johnny Depp. "Just how skinny they all are... It really, really pisses me off," said actress Cate Blanchett.

The Stones - average age 68 - ripped through 20 hits that began with "Get Off of My Cloud" and closed with "Sympathy for the Devil" and an encore of "You Can't Always Get What You Want", "Jumping Jack Flash" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".

Women in the crowd opened their arms wide as Jagger, wearing a silver sequined jacket, strutted along the horseshoe-shaped stage for "I Wanna Be Your Man", a Beatles tune. The band was then joined by R&B singer Mary J. Blige for "Gimme Shelter".

"People say 'why do you keep doing this?'" Jagger told the crowd. He thanked fans for buying records and "generally being amazing for the last 50 years."

The Stones started their brief diamond jubilee tour in London and are due to play twice in Newark, New Jersey.

Fans said it could be the last chance for New Yorkers to see the band live.

"It's the only concert I wanted to see before I die," said Lucy Webley, 33. — Reuters

Flu forces La Scala to change opening gala cast

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 10:20 PM PST

Artists perform during Wagner's 'Lohengrin' at La Scala opera house in Milan December 7, 2012. – Reuters pic

MILAN, Dec 9 – Opera house La Scala was forced to change its cast for Richard Wagner's "Lohengrin" hours before the opening gala on Friday after German soprano Anja Harteros and her understudy both fell ill with flu.

The theatre said Annette Dasch will sing the lead female role of Elsa after arriving in Milan overnight, rescuing the biggest night of the year in the world of opera. Dasch has performed the role at the Bayreuth opera festival.

The Milanese theatre has come under fire for choosing Wagner over local hero Giuseppe Verdi to open its season.

With opera lovers around the globe preparing to celebrate the 200th birthday of both composers, born a few months apart in 1813, La Scala has been accused of being unpatriotic at a time when Italy battles a recession some blame on austerity policies driven by Germany.

"La Scala puts Verdi in a corner, preferring the German," wrote il Giornale newspaper owned by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's family and known for its vitriolic attacks on German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Corriere della Sera said there was unease in the orchestra pit over the choice of Wagner in Verdi's musical home and talked of "a blow to national pride in a moment of crisis."

La Scala general manager Stephane Lissner, a Frenchman, has dismissed the controversy as ridiculous.

"There are more serious problems than this Wagner-Verdi derby," he told reporters this week, pointing out that the theatre will stage six works by Wagner against eight by Verdi in the 2012/13 season.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano was careful to clarify that he could not attend the gala opening because of pressing state business in Rome rather than deliver a deliberate snub. In a letter to the theatre, he called the row over Wagner "futile" and "pathetic".

Prime Minister Mario Monti, who replaced Berlusconi just over a year ago as Italy flirted with a Greek-style debt crisis, will be in attendance at one of the global social calendar's most glittering events along with five of his ministers.

For some, the debate reflects the storied rivalry between the two great composers and their supporters. When Verdi attended the Italian premiere of Lohengrin in 1871, he scribbled on a copy of the score: "Mediocre impression."

The romantic opera in three acts, generally considered one of Wagner's most accessible, centres on the doomed love between Lohengrin, a noble knight who cannot reveal his identity, and the daughter of the late ruler in the land of Brabant, Elsa.

Wagner specialist Daniel Barenboim conducts the opening night, with German tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Lohengrin.

The 234-year old theatre, which is navigating in troubled financial waters, is hoping its glamorous gala will help lure wider audiences and more sponsors. The performance will be broadcast live on television and in cinemas across Europe, Russia and Japan.

Public funds now only cover 40 per cent of the La Scala budget and Lissner warned this week that without money from the private sector the theatre would not be able survive. – Reuters

Dakwaan 300,000 orang India tiada kerakyatan tak benar, kata Najib

Posted: 09 Dec 2012 12:53 AM PST

Modus operandi mereka cukup licik.

Mungkin senarai para artis yang mereka pilih seperti Blues Gang atau Republic of Brickfield populariti mereka tidaklah sehebat kumpulan muzik rock popular seperti Wing, May mahupun Search?
