Adrià brothers to open Japanese-Peruvian eatery next year

BARCELONA, Nov 6 — The Adrià brothers – one of food's most powerful sibling restaurateurs – have given a name and opening date for their highly anticipated Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant in Barcelona.

The 30-seat eatery is to be named Pakta, and will open its doors in mid-January, according to a story in the Peruvian publication El Comercio.

The restaurant is inspired by a recent trip to Peru, during which the elder and star-powered brother Ferran Adrià was introduced to the country's rich, complex and heady gastronomical heritage, where Asian diasporas spawned fusion foods like Chifa – Chinese and Peruvian cuisine – and Nikkei fare, or Peruvian foods heavily influenced by Japanese immigrants.

The kitchen will be staffed with an international team of chefs from Peru, Argentina and Japan.

While the menu will include sushi, there will be no maki. Instead, expect tiraditos, for instance, the Japanese version of ceviche, in which raw fish is bathed in a spicy sauce.

Peruvian cuisine is on the cusp of becoming a worldwide trend, thanks mostly to the superstar power of the country's unofficial ambassador Gaston Acurio, a celebrity chef whose star status in Latin America can be compared to Jamie Oliver in the English-speaking world.

The younger Adrià sibling, Albert, has also expressed interest in opening a Mexican restaurant in Barcelona. The brothers already helm a tapas restaurant in the city called Tickets. — AFP-Relaxnews

Prices set to rise following widespread wine drought

Consumers are being warned that wine prices are expected to rise following the worst year for wine production since 1975. — AFP-Relaxnews pic

PARIS, Nov 6 — Be prepared to shell out a little more for a bottle of wine, suggests a recent report out of Paris, which warned that global wine production for 2012 has fallen to levels not seen since 1975.

According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), output for 2012 is forecast to hover around 248 million hectolitres worldwide. That compares to 264 million hectolitres produced in 2011 – a shortfall equal to 1.3 billion bottles, points out wine publication Decanter.

A poor harvest, adverse weather, and the shrinking size of global vineyards are being blamed on the precipitous decline in wine production this year, reads the report.

Particularly hard hit are European wine makers such as France, where production is expected to plummet 19 per cent this year. Production in Spain is also expected to fall 6 per cent; in Italy, 3 per cent, and Hungary 32 per cent.

In the EU, that translates to a decline of 9 per cent overall, or 14.3 millions of hectolitres.

For wine-loving consumers, a worldwide shortfall will inevitably trickle down to hit their pocketbooks. For example, the cost of a litre of Italian pinot grigio from 2012 rose from about €1.30 (RM5) to €1.45 last month.

It's a similar story in South America, where Chile and Argentina also report lower yields and production.

It's not all doom and gloom, however. Some New World wines are reporting increased production for 2012.

In the US, for example, production is expected to grow 7 per cent, while Australia also is reporting a strong year, particularly for its white wines which should increase by 4 per cent compared to last year.

The only EU wine-producing countries to report modest growth, meanwhile, are Portugal and Greece. — AFP-Relaxnews

Goal line technology may be a red herring

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 07:18 AM PST

BERNE, Nov 5 — Football's authorities spent years agonising over whether to introduce goal line technology, yet its use would not have solved any of the recent refereeing controversies which have blown up in Italy, England and Brazil.

Video replays, on the other hand, would instantly have cleared up any doubts, yet they have barely been discussed by football's rule-makers and remain firmly off the agenda.

The paradox has been highlighted in Brazil where the result of a match has been put under investigation because, although match officials made the right decision, there is a suspicion they used information from television replays to do so.

Millions of television viewers were instantly able to see that Palmeiras striker Hernan Barcos punched the ball into the net Diego Maradona-style when he scored against Internacional in the Brazilian championship on October 27.

The referee initially missed the incident but, amid outraged Internacional protests, agreed to consult the other match officials and then changed his mind. Internacional went on to win 2-1.

Palmeiras, however, claimed officials made their decision after speaking to television staff who had seen the replay and Brazil's top disciplinary tribunal provisionally declared the result void pending an investigation.

It is not the first time officials have been accused of breaking the rules by using replays to make the right decision.

Zidane debate

There was considerable debate after the 2006 World Cup final that Zinedine Zidane was only sent off for his head-butt on Italy defender Marco Materazzi after the fourth official saw the incident on a TV replay.

Several minutes elapsed before referee Horacio Elizondo dealt with the matter and he did so only after Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon drew the assistant referee's attention to what had happened.

But FIFA brushed aside the suspicions, and the possibility that the final would have to be replayed, saying the incident had been 'directly observed' by the fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo from his position at the side of the pitch without the use of a monitor.

There was another bizarre episode at the 2010 World Cup, on the same day that Frank Lampard's disallowed goal for England against Germany prompted FIFA to re-open the debate on goal line technology

A stadium screen replayed Carlos Tevez's opening goal for Argentina against Mexico 3-1 and, in doing so, clearly showed it should have been ruled offside.

Eighty thousand people knew the correct decision within seconds and the Mexican players surrounded the referee urging him to look at the screen but the official had to go by what his own eyes had told him.

Video umpires

Other sports have embraced video umpires, notably the two codes of rugby and cricket. In rugby union, for example, a Television Match Official can rule on whether the ball has been grounded for a try while in rugby league officials can go further back to check for offside or knock-ons during the build-up to a score.

Awaiting the video verdict on a batsman's fate has become part and parcel of cricket, as officials use a combination of TV replays and other technology, while teams are allowed a set number of challenges to umpire's decisions.

Serie A's Catania would certainly have benefited from a similar system last week.

The Sicilian side had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside in the first half of their match against Juventus and then were beaten 1-0 by a goal in the second half which replays showed should not have stood.

On the same day, October 28, Lazio had a goal wrongly ruled out, also for offside, in a 2-0 defeat at Fiorentina while Liverpool had what should have been a last-minute winning goal at Everton also disallowed in the English Premiership.

On Saturday, Stoke City manager Tony Pulis called for the retroactive use of video evidence to punish divers, believing that the free kick from which Norwich City beat his side 1-0 in the Premier League had been wrongly awarded.

'Different angles'

"It should be taken out the of the referee's hands and looked at on the Monday (after the match)," he told the BBC. "We should have a rule that people will view it on Monday from different angles. It's very, very difficult for referees to see on the day."

But why wait until the Monday, when all that can be done is to punish the alleged diver, when the decision could be quickly corrected on the spot by an official in the stands with a monitor?

FIFA have argued that video evidence would disrupt the flow of the game. But that has not been the case in rugby and cricket, where anticipation of the big-screen verdict is part of the fan experience.

In any case, the inevitable arguing and protests which arise when a team believes it has been wronged also stop play and can lead to yellow and red cards which further distort the final result.

Catania lost their composure after their goal was disallowed against Juventus and had four players booked in quick succession.

After years of debate and a u-turn by president Sepp Blatter in 2010, football's rule-making body the International Football Association Board (IFAB) finally gave the go-ahead to the use of goal-line technology in July.

But IFAB was also adamant that the use of technology would stop there.

"None of us are considering any type of technology which would interfere with the free-flowing nature of our game," said Alex Horne, the English member of the IFAB.

Yet only a fraction of footballing controversies involve decisions over whether the ball has entered the net or not, while goal line technology is expensive to install and it has required a year of painstaking tests to find two systems which FIFA considers reliable.

With such few benefits, the whole debate about goal-line technology may have been little more than a red herring, distracting attention from the more wide-ranging benefits of video replays. — Reuters

Ahmad Fuad optimistic of winning in Sepang

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 05:47 AM PST

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — Experienced rider Ahmad Fuad Baharudin of Faito Motobert remains optimistic of winning round nine of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship at the Sepang Circuit on Nov 10 and 11.

Ahmad Fuad, trailing CP130 category leader Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman from Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing by 14 points, hopes to pile on the pressure on the leader.

"I am not under any pressure but I feel Azlan as the leader will be under pressure to win. I will try to push him to the limit and try to force him into making mistakes," he said in a statement today.

In eight races, Azlan Shah has managed to finish on the podium five times, including once as race winner, while Ahmad Fuad has finished on the podium four times.

Ahmad Fuad said apart from trying to win the overall title in the riders category, he was also focused on winning the overall team title.

"We are just one point behind leader Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing 2. If not for a technical problem in the bike of my team mate Ahmad Fazrul Sham in Melaka, we will have taken over the lead," he said. — Bernama

Hang-drying laundry inside your home may trigger allergies

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 07:12 AM PST

GLASGOW, Nov 5 — For people who suffer from asthma, hay fever, and allergies, hang-drying laundry indoors may put your health at risk, according to a new study.

Researchers recommend drying your clothes indoors in an energy-efficient, condensing tumble dryer. — AFP/Relaxnews

Researchers from the Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit in Glasgow, Scotland, reported last week that drying your laundry indoors causes enough moisture in the air to contribute to the development of mould and dust mites.

The small study, which examined 100 homes, found that the air in many homes was too moist, with up to a third of that caused by drying clothes indoors due to cold weather.

Hanging laundry around the house to dry can emit two litres of water into the air from just one load, head researcher Rosalie Menon said.

The research team recommends drying laundry outdoors whenever possible, or using an energy-efficient, condensing tumble dryer.

If you have to dry your clothes indoors due to weather or lack of outdoor options, they recommend placing them near a window for natural light and heat.

Military discipline for ‘soldiers’ on Korea exam’s front line

GWANGJU, Nov 5 — Conversations between men and women are forbidden at the school on the outskirts of Seoul, where security cameras watch the students' every move.

There is no access to television, the Internet, mobile phones or MP3 players.

Welcome to the monastic life of a boarding school for students dedicated to spending nine months preparing to retake South Korea's college entrance exams, in the hopes of a place at the best college and a job for life at a top corporation.

"During study hours it's difficult to go to the bathroom even if I want to. Waking up early in the morning is also hard," said Um Hee-joon, 20, over a spartan lunch of pork cutlet.

This year, the life-defining tests are on Thursday.

South Korea's exam hell is an annual event so full of pressure that many students are driven to despair, with some even taking their own lives.

More than 50 per cent of those between the ages of 15 and 19 who are suicidal have given "academic performance and college entrance" as a reason, says the national Statistics Korea.

Pity even more the hundreds of thousands of students, around 20 per cent of the total, who take the exams twice or more.

They aren't delinquents, but simply failed to meet their own or their parents' expectations the first time around and are living through another year of hell.

Some 140,000 of the test takers signed up for this year's entrance exam, 21 per cent of the total, have already graduated from high school, according to government data.

But in some Seoul districts where middle-class parents drive their offspring even harder, such graduates account for more than 50 per cent of test takers, education experts say.

Those who are really determined, or desperate, may decide to spend nine months at one of 40 private boarding schools like the Deung Yong Moon in Gwangju, on the outskirts of Seoul, to dedicate all of their waking hours to preparing for the test.

While male and female students study in the same classroom they are forbidden to go to the snack shop at the same time, stand in separate lines for lunch and eat at separate tables. Dating is definitely off the menu.

Wake-up calls at the schools, which can cost 2 million Korean won (RM5,512) a month, come at 6.30am.

Apart from group exercises, meals and short breaks it is study, study and more study until midnight.

Not one of the five hundred students in the boarding school has access to television, the Internet, mobile phones or an MP3 player. Men wear regulation blue tracksuits, women red.

"I feel really suffocated here. I wrote down 100 things I want to do after the exam. I want to travel most," said Cho Hwan, 20.

"I thought if I studied for the exam another year again, I would be able to get higher scores. But not that much," added Cho, frustrated over practice tests.

To make sure that Cho and his classmates don't waste their time, there are more than 80 closed-circuit TV cameras. Supervisors monitor the students' every move to catch anyone dozing off during study hours.

If they break rules, the students, of whom 80 per cent are male, get "yellow cards".

At worst, they could be expelled.

The study regimen gets more intense from a month before exam day. The school takes down pay phones and bans leaves. Even parental visits are strictly limited.

"Students grew up with a lot of freedom and have been pampered," said Han Sang-hee, head of the school, whose name translates to "Gateway To Success".

"We (the school and students) agreed with each other that the school would help bring out their best abilities through strict discipline and control like a military training academy. So the students can bear with it," he said.

"Army reservists sometimes escort them to the exam site."

Some students even resort to the service of a school-provided therapist, who hypnotises students and then intones in a low voice, "You have the strongest confidence in your entire life," as if it was exam day.

"I've spent a whole year to retake this exam.

"I really hope I will get a good score so I won't regret this," Cho said. — Reuters

Sharon Osbourne has double mastectomy, says magazine

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 08:57 AM PST

LONDON, Nov 5 — British celebrity Sharon Osbourne has had a double mastectomy after discovering she was carrying a gene that increased the risk of her developing breast cancer, she told Hello! magazine in an interview published today.

Osbourne, 60, told Hello! that the decision was a "no-brainer" in the end.

"As soon as I found out I had the breast cancer gene, I thought: 'The odds are not in my favour'," she said in remarks that also ran in the Daily Mirror tabloid.

"I've had cancer before and I didn't want to live under that cloud: I decided to just take everything off, and had a double mastectomy."

Osbourne, who put the eccentric life of her family on view in the reality TV series "The Osbournes", said she did not want to spend the rest of her life with "that shadow hanging over me".

"I want to be around for a long time and be a grandmother to Pearl," she added, referring to her son Jack's first child.

"I didn't even think of my breasts in a nostalgic way, I just wanted to be able to live my life without that fear all the time. It's not 'pity me', it's a decision I made that's got rid of this weight that I was carrying around."

Osbourne raised her profile by appearing as a judge on successful talent shows "The X Factor" and "America's Got Talent". She is married to heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne.

Sandy’s winds of uncertainty blow through US presidential race

WASHINGTON, Nov 5 — The devastating storm that slammed into the US East Coast last week could send winds of uncertainty through tomorrow's presidential election, narrowing an already close contest and casting doubt on the legitimacy of the outcome.

Though superstorm Sandy is unlikely to determine whether President Barack Obama or Republican Mitt Romney wins the White House, experts said it could expose flaws in how the United States conducted elections, leading to protracted legal wrangling and lingering bitterness in a country already fractured along partisan lines.

In a worst-case scenario, the storm disruption could cause Obama to lose the popular vote and still win re-election, stirring up vitriolic memories of the contested 2000 battle that allowed Republican George W. Bush to triumph over Democrat Al Gore.

Last-minute changes imposed by election officials also could further arm campaign lawyers looking to challenge the result.

At minimum, low turnout would add another wild card to an election projected to be among the closest in US history. Voting could be an afterthought for hundreds of thousands of people still struggling with power outages, fuel shortages and plummeting temperatures.

"It's a possibility that we'll see significant drops in turnout in some of these densely populated areas," said George Mason University professor Michael MacDonald, a voter turnout expert.

"The effects could be quite dramatic in terms of the popular vote," he said.

One more headache

Tomorrow's election presents yet another headache for local officials in New York and New Jersey, which were hardest hit by the storm. Rescue workers are still recovering bodies, 1.9 million homes and businesses have no power, and tens of thousands of people are without heat as temperatures dip near freezing.

Sandy, one of the most damaging storms to hit the United States, hammered the region with 130-km/h winds, while walls of water overran seaside communities. At least 113 people in the United States and Canada died.

Election authorities now face unprecedented challenges. In New York City, 143,000 voters have been assigned new polling stations. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday called the city's elections board "dysfunctional" and warned that it needed to clearly communicate changes to poll workers.

In New Jersey, where 25 per cent of homes and businesses have no power, officials are allowing displaced voters to cast their ballots by email. In battered Monmouth County, officials are spreading the word about new polling locations in at least 29 towns and setting aside paper ballots to use if electronic voting machines fail.

"Whatever it takes, Asbury Park is voting," City Manager Terence Reidy said.

Legal experts said the late changes, however well-intentioned, might give the losing candidate a basis to challenge results.

"The devil is in the details and no doubt these new rules will be fertile ground for those who choose to challenge the results in the election." said Angelo Genova, a New Jersey election law expert who represents Democratic candidates in this election.

Mitt Romney greets supporters at a campaign rally at the airport in Sanford, Florida, November 5, 2012. — Reuters pic

The post-Sandy chaos also could expose flaws in the arcane electoral college system the United States uses to elect presidents.

Candidates are not required to win the popular vote nationwide, but they must amass a majority of the 538 "electoral votes" that are awarded to each state based on population. The system was set up when the United States was founded, as a compromise between slave states and free states.

Usually the electoral college winner also wins the popular vote. But in two elections — 1876 and 2000 — the results diverged, creating historic controversies.

This year, Obama is expected to handily win New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the states most affected by the storm. But his popular vote total could fall by hundreds of thousands if large numbers of storm-hit voters in Democratic areas are unable to participate. Conceivably, Obama could win the White House while losing the popular vote.

Several experts said they considered that outcome unlikely.

"You'll see lower turnout, yes, but it's not going to change the outcome of the election," said Hunter College political science professor Jamie Chandler, who predicts Obama will win by at least one million votes.

If Obama carries the popular vote by a narrow margin, it could have implications on his ability to govern effectively, according to Ruy Teixeira, a senior fellow at the liberal Centre for American Progress.

"The more Obama has a solid popular margin the better his victory," he said.

Yesterday, several Republicans said the storm gave Obama an advantage in the campaign's final week by shifting public attention away from the sluggish economy and other topics they hoped to emphasise.

"The hurricane is what broke Romney's momentum," former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour said on CNN.

Obama campaign officials said that they were confident the storm would not interfere with the voting process. But they intend to have legal experts on standby just in case.

"We're going to have lawyers who are ready to make sure people can exercise their right to vote. We're going to protect that as fiercely as we can," Obama senior adviser David Plouffe said on Friday. — Reuters

Four years ago, Kogelo, and Africa in general, celebrated with noisy gusto when Obama, whose father came from the scattered hamlet of tin-roofed homes, became the first African-American to be elected president of the United States. Looking across the Atlantic to the November 6 presidential election, the continent is cooler now towards the "son of Africa" who is seeking a second term. There are questions too whether his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, will have more to offer to sub-Saharan Africa if he wins the White House. — Reuters pic

Artist in profile: Chad Valley

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 11:11 PM PST

LONDON, Nov 5 — From the university town of Oxford in the UK, Hugo Manuel, better known as Chad Valley, worked with artists such as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Glasser to turn out his debut LP Young Hunger, which has been heralded as "an album that hardly gives you a chance to wipe the smile off your face — or pull yourself from the dance floor" by music blog Consequence of Sound.

Who?

British-born Hugo Manuel is part of the chillwave scene currently seeing a revival on both sides of the Atlantic.

Cut from the same cloth as artists such as Toro Y Moi, The Fixers and Teen Daze, Chad Valley first began to cause a serious buzz with the release of his EP in 2010 and has since featured regularly in the music press thanks to his debut LP "Young Hunger".

Why the buzz?

Chad Valley is set to drop Young Hunger on November 19 via Loose Lips in the UK; it has been out since October 30 in the US via Cascine.

The album has attracted a stream of praise from noted music media such as Pitchfork, which rated it 7.0/10.0, and The Owl Mag, which described it as "absolutely magical".

"Young Hunger" also boasts a list of collaborators that reads like a partial  "who's who" of upcoming alternative artists including Glasser, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Active Child and the perhaps more established El Perro Del Mar.

What to listen to?

Check out Chad Valley's Soundcloud page, where stand-out tracks include "Tell All Your Friends" and "I Owe You This" featuring Twin Shadow.

"Young Hunger" can also be streamed on the Hype Machine or ordered via Cascine.

Where to see?

Hugo Manuel will be taking to the road around Europe in the coming weeks, including a spot at the Fear of Fiction festival in Bristol, UK, after which he moves on to the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, where he will be joining the much hyped Passion Pit and CHVRCHES. — AFP-Relaxnews

Rafizi desak Nazri bercuti, SPRM memulakan siasatan

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 02:33 AM PST

A look at what Sandy brought to New York

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 08:31 PM PST

NOV 5 — Katrina was to New Orleans yesterday, as Sandy is to New York/New Jersey today.

It's extremely tough to describe the wide range of emotions one encounters in viewing the unfolding of destruction in real time by Mother Nature. No, it's not incurring God's wrath, as the Mercy and Compassion is greater than His wrath. But, yes, it may be attributed to man's benign neglect of being responsible stewards for the planet.

The thoughts appear to be scattered, but that's the nature of being an eyewitness to devastation and unable to do much about it.  The helplessness is the same that South/South-East Asia encountered several years ago or last year in Japan with the tsunami. The only difference is that we (not in the region) witnessed it in real time, and now you, in Asia, witnessed a hurricane named Sandy in New York/New Jersey.

Today, Katrina and Sandy may not be popular names for newborn girls, as they wrecked havoc, chaos, and destruction in their paths. I wonder what name Malaysians would have given to a hurricane of such severity?

During Katrina, the Emir of Qatar announced a financial package for the devastated New Orleans community. Does Malaysia have a similar vision and will to make a timely announcement? Let's put politics to the side!

Humbled New Yorkers

It has been a tough week for us New Yorkers, and attitude adjustment is probably the main take-away from the "storm of the century." The cancellation of the largest marathon in the world, NYC Marathon, at the last minute by Mayor Bloomberg, while negatively impacting his challenging poll numbers, is a minor blip in the bigger scheme of things that matter.

The super-computers may have predicted the severity of the storm. However, the people, including myself, did not prepare for it as seriously as we should have. It was named "Sandy", hardly fear inducing. Perhaps it's because we have four seasons, having encountered and endured winter snowstorms and summer heat-waves over the years, and, this is NY, the epicentre of the world.

We New Yorkers believe that "if you can make it in NY, you can make it anywhere", and, the "been there, done that" attitude, actual or vicarious, is a source of (humble) pride. Furthermore, the media reinforces the importance of New York on the global stage, as similar typhoons hit Asian capitals, but, say, CNN or BBC, did not provide similar coffee-induced coverage.

The financial importance and influence that was/is New York is flushed out when the capital markets are forced to take an unintended "holiday" due to weather. With NY closing, the capital market participants and ensuing liquidity affect markets opening in Asia as the focus and chatter continues to be on New York.

That notwithstanding, Man may have conquered the deepest oceans to the highest peaks (including the balloonist's skydive from the edge of space that also broke the sound barrier), split an atom or cloned a sheep, but it will neither control Mother Nature nor pre-empt its path.

Power

Sandy's howling winds created horizontal sheets of rain with gusts of 80mph that uprooted trees, with some falling on power lines, hence, producing her first causality: power. A close second was flooding, be it the evacuation of the "Las Vegas of the east", Atlantic City, or basements flooding in apartment buildings or multi-million dollar homes near the water.

Probably the best way to get around and see firsthand Nature's induced new obstacle course is with a mountain bike.  One of the most common sights is floating interior furnishings including kids' toys/dolls and external pieces of homes. The word surreal comes up repeatedly.

It's not only the sound of power generators and pumps removing water from basements chorus-like in some neighbourhoods, but also seeing the strains on homeowners' faces as they put out some of their soggy worldly possessions for garbage pick-up.

While trees can be a wonderful canopy to protect against the summer's searing sun and provide landscaping aesthetics, they can also remodel a home, turn cars into low riders, and snap above-ground power lines as if they are kite-strings! The challenge then becomes one of the "live" wires!

When the power goes, assuming the decision to acquire a Plan B generator was deferred again till next season, the "new normality" kicks in for the family and community. For many first generation migrants from developing countries, it's a stark reminder of home and definitely not "home sweet home."

For native New Yorkers, it's more challenging, especially if the power is out for a few days and the weather is extreme, too hot or cold. Luckily, the fall is a wonderful time to be in NY, and is bearable, but the power companies either become heroes (restored quickly) or goats (with appropriate qurbani).

The loss of power is also the loss of the landline phone, cell phone (tower may be "out") and Internet. The inability for many to connect to Facebook, emails, access news, etc., flushes out how addicted we've become to "www." Thus, a loss of power is (or should be) a wake-up call for families more connected to the Internet than each other.

[As a side-note: I've been coming to Malaysia for more than decade and I see the younger generation, as young as 3-4 years old, as extremely Web savvy and engaged in video games, where they put me to shame repeatedly. But, I wonder if they will have the people communications skills so necessary in an inter-connected world where "people" skills are still paramount for leaders?]

Kindness

There is a human side of the storm. The outpouring of concern immediately from family, friends, colleagues and even people I met once at conferences or those who have read my writing from so many countries via phone calls, emails, BBMs, WhatsApp, etc., was/is humbling. The compassionate connection really says something wonderful about the "extended family becoming nuclear family" during tragedies, ie., we were not alone!

Even strangers, much like on Christmas, Eid-il-Fitr or Diwali eve, went out of their way to ask, "How you doing or holding up" or how/if they can help, during the storm! The asking is oftentimes more positively impactful on the psyche than the actual help!

The one wish that myself and probably most of humanity have is rolling over the "feel good feelings", but, sadly, the carry-over only comes out during the next tragedy.

Property

The property damage has been incredible, US$50 billion (RM153 billion) within 48 hours, and it's the emotional connection, as silly as it may sound, to worldly possessions that is the temporary "tear jerker." The negotiations with the insurance companies are about to start, and hopefully the fine print was read and understood by the homeowners (and car owners) on definition of, say, flood (from skies or underground).

Maybe for some damaged houses, whose mortgages are underwater, like mine, meaning the mortgage payments are worth more than the value of the property, this may have been the much needed "damage from heaven" lifeline, hmm?

Although I encountered minor challenges, my thoughts are with people who have a hole in the roof (not looking for new skylights), windows/doors blown away (not looking to remodel), water in the basement (not looking for an indoor pool), and so on. The storm did not discriminate between million-dollar homes and bungalows, as water flows along the path of least resistance, and the rich and middle class were one.

I hope the compassion that insurance companies portray in their commercials is shown to these unlucky homeowners.

I wonder how Islamic insurance (Takaful) would handle such claims, spirit of coverage versus the fine print?

People

The good (mostly), bad (some) and ugly (few) in people has come out, be it looting stores, robbing houses, pulling guns while waiting in snaking lines to get gas (for the car), etc., but there were also many selfless gestures that make you believe in humanity again and the power of good.

The looting neither has geographical borders nor defined nationalities or ethnicities; such people exist and will always exist. One wonders how they would feel if they are looted, robbed, burglarised, etc? There have been many eye-witness accounts of, say, televisions taken from nursing homes, shops, homes, and so on.

Tempers are going to flare when people are waiting in lines for hours to fill the car tank, and then, as you're about to refill, an announcement comes that either there is "no gas", limit to US$20 (price of a gallon is about US$4) or only the expensive/premium gas is available. At many places, there are not enough police to keep these tempers in check.

One of the greatest silver linings in tragedies is that it brings strangers, friends, and families together.

The extraordinary hours ordinary people put in to helping out at soup kitchens and shelters, shuttling medicine and food to people trapped in their residences, or staying with those petrified of being alone is proof that the power of good overcomes the self! These are the many unnamed heroes who are just doing what comes naturally to them, and they are the ones that deserve a parade as the "new normal" begins to set into the psyche of the state and country.

Sandy may have short-circuited power and devastated property, but she also brought out the best of people. We will rebuild. We will be strong. We will remember the good in people.

We are now spiritually connected to the people in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Japan, and other places that have encountered Nature's wrath.

Menghadapi kematian (Bahagian 2)

Posted: 04 Nov 2012 03:30 PM PST

— Bersambung
