Quality over quantity as English bubbly builds reputation

Posted: 30 Dec 2013 10:06 PM PST

December 31, 2013

With revellers raising a glass of bubbly to the new year, England's tiny sparkling wine industry is set for a lift in 2014 as established brands step up export plans and newcomers join the party.

Internationally, England may be known for its ale, cider and gin, but it is also home to 432 vineyards and 124 wineries, mostly along the southeast coast, which has similar geology and climate to France's Champagne region across the Channel.

English sparkling wine remains a drop in the bucket compared with its continental cousins, but producers are determined to hang on to their premium positioning, selling at an average of 25 pounds (RM135.19) a bottle even as many cost-conscious Britons turn from champagne to cheaper cava from Spain and prosecco from Italy.

"We see ourselves as a luxury brand and we have to be judged on a world stage, not just an English stage," said Julian Kirk, head of sales for West Sussex winemaker Nyetimber, one of the longest-established names in English sparkling wine and owner of 10% of the country's vineyards.

"The British market is great, but we can't depend on it for the long-term future," Kirk added.

Those efforts have made the wine community sit up and take notice in recent years, earning British bubbly more than its fair share of awards.

Among them was East Sussex winemaker Ridgeview's triumph at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards, ahead of a number of more illustrious champagne producers.

English sparkling wines punched above their weight again this year, with three gold medals in the prestigious International Wine Challenge. The winners were Nyetimber, Gusbourne Estate in Kent and Dorset producer Furleigh Estate.

It should come as no surprise, therefore, that Nyetimber began exporting to Japan in May and Denmark in September.

With more than two decades of production under its belt since the 1992 debut vintage, it plans to start selling in The United States in 2014 and is also eyeing Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and Denmark's Nordic neighbours, Kirk said.

English sparkling wine sold 55,000 nine-litre cases in its home market in 2012, according to wine data specialist IWSR, having achieved compound annual growth of 13% over the past five years.

That gave it 0.6% of the 9.1 million cases of bubbly sold in Britain last year.

Spain, France and Italy together control 87% of the market, though Spain recently pulled ahead of France because of the popularity of cava as a low-cost enjoyable sparkling wine, IWSR's Helen Windle said.

IWSR predicts that sales of sparkling wine will grow faster than any other wine category in Britain over the next few years, adding 1.7 million cases between 2012 and 2018, at a compound annual growth rate of 2.8%.

For champagne makers such as LVMH, Pernod Ricard and Laurent Perrier, there has been increasing speculation that they might be looking to purchase vineyards in Britain, their biggest export market.

"If we have the time, will and passion, it's possible (to make great sparkling wine in England)," said Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, president of the champagne house that bears his family name, though he said it has no such plans at present.

Julia Trustram Eve, marketing director for the English Wine Producers trade group, said that the winemakers must retain their focus on quality.

Though part of this comes from the cool weather that gives the grapes high acidity, it is also down to the traditional production method, in which second fermentation takes place inside each bottle rather than in bulk tanks.

"It's in our interest to make sure that anyone involved in the industry and the production of this premium wine is going to keep to those levels of quality, for the sake of our own reputation," she said.

Digby Fine English, one of the newest English winemakers, is sticking to that strategy. Its first vintage, 2009, has just gone on sale at upmarket outlets such as Selfridges department store and Michelin-starred restaurants.

Trevor Clough, Digby's corporate strategist-turned-CEO, says that the industry's small size helps to support its premium price as it builds its reputation slowly but surely.

"We're not really at the point where we want everyone to know and everyone to want to buy English wine all the time," Clough said.

"It's all about focusing on early adopters and cultivating their enthusiasm." - Reuters, December 31, 2013.

Sugar overload – WHO may cut sugar recommendations by half

Experts are proposing cutting the recommended level that people should consume from no more than 10% of their calories from sugar to no more than 5%, based on fears of heart disease, obesity, and tooth decay, The Sunday Times in the UK reports. The new requirements equate to about five teaspoons of sugar a day – about the same as in a Mar bars or in half a can of a soda.

"It is political dynamite," said Philip James, president of the WHO-affiliated International Association for the Study of Obesity, in the report. "The food industry will do everything in their power to undermine this."

"I would agree with the recommendation to reduce it to 5%," added Shrinath Reddy, a cardiologist and a member of the WHO panel of experts. "There is overwhelming evidence coming out about sugar-sweetened beverages and other sugar consumption [being linked] to obesity, diabetes and even cardiovascular disease."

According to recent data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics, most US adults get a whopping 13% of their total calories from added sugars alone. Not only does that add a lot of extra calories which contribute to making us fat, sugary items often displace healthier items, such as fruits, vegetables, and foods packed with nutrients. - AFP/Relaxnews, December 31, 2013.

Sharapova dominates on return from injury in Brisbane

Posted: 30 Dec 2013 03:15 AM PST

December 30, 2013

Maria Sharapova (pic) returned after four months out injured with a dominant 6-3 6-0 victory over France's Caroline Garcia in the opening round of the Brisbane International on Monday.

The world number four showed no signs of the shoulder injury which has kept her off court since the Western and Southern Open in August as she raced into the second round in 64 minutes.

"I was sick of the off-season and I was ready to get going," a beaming Sharapova said on court. "I missed the game. I wanted to come out here and perform well."

Frustrated after so long without any competitive action, the 26-year-old Russian came out firing on all cylinders and raced to a 3-0 lead against her 74th ranked opponent.

The four-times major champion, watched by her new coach Sven Groeneveld, ruthlessly dismantled the big serve that has created excitement around the 20-year-old Garcia. Sharapova wrapped up the first set with a blistering forehand winner after 39 minutes, and two further service breaks later was 4-0 up in the second.

With the momentum all on her side of the court and Garcia shaking her head at the quality of some of the returns coming back over the net, Sharapova grabbed another break and sealed the victory on her own serve with a forearm smash.

The Russian, forced to pulled out of the Brisbane tournament by injury for the last two years, was delighted to show off her skills to the Queensland public.

"It's been so long. I'm sorry," she said. "I've been meaning to play this event for so many years and I'm happy it was this year after being away from the game for a few months."

The third seed will have the majority of the crowd against her in her second round match when she plays Australian teenager Ash Barty, who earlier beat Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 7-5.

"It's going to be another tough one. She's played four times here which is a huge advantage," said Sharapova, who is seeded to meet world number one Serena Williams in the semi-finals.

German fifth seed Angelique Kerber, the beaten finallist at Wimbledon this year, also beat a French 20-year-old in her first match, seeing off Kristina Mladenovic 6-2 6-2.

Former world number one Jelena Jankovic earlier beat former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-2 7-6(6) to take her place in the second round.

In the men's draw, Croatian Marin Cilic came from behind to beat Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-7(3) 7-6(5) 6-4 and American Sam Querrey upset Russian seventh seed Dmitry Tursunov 7-5 6-4.

Finn Jarkko Nieminen earlier thrashed local James Duckworth 6-2 6-3 to earn the dubious pleasure of a second round meeting with top seed Roger Federer. - Reuters, December 30, 2013.

Wenger hails resilience of table-topping Arsenal

Posted: 30 Dec 2013 12:09 AM PST

December 30, 2013

Arsenal, long accused of being too weak during an eight year spell without a trophy, showed their resilience in Sunday's narrow win at Newcastle United that sent them back to the top of the table, manager Arsene Wenger (pic) said.

The Londoners moved one point ahead of Manchester City with the 1-0 success, thanks to Olivier Giroud's second half header and some resolute defending in the final stages to protect their slim advantage.

Wenger, looking for his first league title since 2004, hailed the uncharacteristic quality shown by his side, who made it back-to-back league wins after the 6-3 defeat by City and home draws with Everton and Chelsea.

"In the last 15 minutes, we have shown another aspect of our team - resilience, fight. We threw our bodies in the box," the Frenchman was quoted as saying by Arsenal.com.

"You have seen today a technical aspect of our team that was quite good, but as well, a mental aspect that was needed in a game of that stature. There is something in the team that is special on the mental front where we have been questioned many times.

"We showed that at West Ham when we were 1-0 down. We showed that again today when we were backs to the wall in the last 15 minutes. There's a great solidarity and a great spirit in the side."

Arsenal had led the league by five points earlier this month, but defensive frailties were exposed at City before disappointing draws with Everton and Chelsea moved them off top spot and left many pundits questioning their title ambitions.

Further dropped points looked likely as they trailed relegation candidates West Ham United 1-0 away in the second half of Thursday's clash before fighting back to claim a 3-1 win which they followed up with Sunday's success.

"We've come out of very difficult games," Wenger said.

"We played Everton, we played Man City, Chelsea, at West ham, at Newcastle and we dropped some points, but I felt it was more down to the heavy schedule and short recovery time we had than to the difficulty of the games."

They host Cardiff City on Wednesday before Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at home to arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur marks the end of the hectic run of Christmas fixtures. The heavy schedule has taken its toll with record signing Mesut Ozil and midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who has been in a rich vein of goalscoring form this season, both missing the Newcastle match with injury.

The duo's absence was an obvious explanation for the lack of chances created by the visitors, who came close to conceding just before halftime through Moussa Sissoko and then Mathieu Debuchy.

Arsenal controlled the game at the start of the second half with Giroud's header breaking the deadlock, but the striker wasted a glorious chances to double the advantage before the visitors opted to retreat into defensive mode.

Wenger added to that by making protective substitutions in the final stages that left Arsenal with a back five happy to sit on the edge of their area and clear the barrage of balls as Newcastle dictated play.

For all the possession though, the home side struggled to find a way through the mass of bodies.

Loic Remy provided the only real moment of panic when Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny cannoned a clearance against his head, but the ball rebounded past the post.

"For years, we were younger (and less able) to resist this kind of pressure, but we have always been up there at the top," Wenger said. "If you analyse our results, we have always been up there. Last year in this period, we were out of the title race, but 2013 we have been quite consistent," he said, before turning to this season's chances of a 14th league championship.

"We believe in ourselves and we are determined to give our best. I hope it will be enough, but it's a long way to go - it's too early to say that." - Reuters, December 30, 2013.

Malaysian teacher covers African continent on scooter in 42 days

Posted: 30 Dec 2013 05:26 AM PST

December 30, 2013

The "Malaysia Boleh" spirit has taken a teacher far: in fact, on a record solo expedition around the African continent on a 110cc scooter in 42 days.

Mohammad Lasim Deraman, 47, travelled more than 10,000 kilometres around Africa, beginning at Cape Point on November 15 and moving around to Tanzania, Botswana, Moyale and Zambia before reaching Mount Kenya.

The special education teacher at a secondary school in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, said prior to the expedition in Africa, he had been on a motorcycle expedition covering Borneo and Indonesia.

"I chose to go to the African continent because of its challenging geographical landscape which is mountainous, with lakes, rivers and desert," he told reporters in George Town today.

He said that among the unforgettable experiences during the expedition was when travelling through a desert area from Kipiri Morsi to the Tanzanian border, Naconde.

The place is a habitat for wild animals, he said, adding that fearing for his life, he was forced to hitch a ride in a lorry across the desert.

Mohammad Lasim, who hails from Kota Baru, Kelantan, said the temperate climate there of between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius enabled him to ride long on his motorcycle, covering an average of 290km a day.

He initially planned to go to Nairobi and then to Makkah after arriving in Moyale (a town bordering Ethiopia and Kenya) on the 34th day of the expedition, but was forced to change plans due to a civil war in Nairobi.

"I was also advised by the embassy to turn back because of the civil war," he said.

On the expedition, Mohammad Lasim said meeting the people there, he realised that many of them had heard of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and were happy when asked to pose for pictures with the Malaysian flag which he had brought along with him.

"I also had the opportunity to see how the Zulu people live. They still lead a traditional way of life and live in straw houses. Looking at them made me feel grateful to be living in a progressive and prosperous country," he added.

After completing the expedition in Africa, Mohammad Lasim did not immediately come home but sent his scooter to Thailand and went on a three-day expedition in the land of the White Elephant.

He then went on to southern Thailand and entered Malaysia through Bukit Kayu Hitam on December 26 before coming here to meet some friends.

He said one of the basic things one needed to know before going on a motorcycle expedition alone was to know how to maintain the machine and make minor repairs like changing a punctured tyre.

Travelling on a scooter is not only exciting, but also cheap, he added. - Bernama, December 30, 2013.

Oh my aching head – is there really a hangover cure?

Scientists offer their best bets on curbing the hangover misery. - AFP/Relaxnews pic, December 30, 2013.From burned toast to raw eggs, there is no shortage of "hangover cures" to fix what ails you. Here's the science behind the best remedy for your pounding head and queasy stomach.

Chinese researchers suggest chugging a Sprite the morning after. Or if you prefer to skip the sweet stuff, soda water may be a good alternative. How it works is that it helps the body better metabolise alcohol, and in particular, speeds up your ability to process aldehyde dehydrogenase, which is thought to be responsible for the symptoms of a hangover.

Interestingly, the scientists found that sipping herbal tea may slow down the process, prolonging your hangover. The results, announced this October, were published in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Food and Function.

In a separate 2011 study, researchers suggest that your best bet might be a cup of joe and a painkiller. Published in the peer-reviewed online science journal PLoS One, the study revealed that common treatments for hangover headache, such as caffeine and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs, block the effects of your hangover. Best solution: drink coffee about four hours after drinking, when acetate levels begin to spike. But don't overdo it, since caffeine works as a diuretic and can further dehydrate your body, making you feel worse.

A few other tried-and-true ways to curb the misery is to avoid drinking alcohol on an empty stomach and load up on carbohydrate-filled snacks to slow down the body's absorption of the alcohol, The Independent reports. Also, be sure to drink plenty of fluids the morning after, but avoid greasy, fatty, or spicy foods, which may be tempting but could make you feel worse.

What about the infamous "hair of the dog"? A 2011 study published in PLoS One found alcohol to be a poor hangover remedy as it causes greater alcohol dependence. Your best bet? Boiled or poached eggs, whole-grain toast, and a fruit smoothie. - AFP/Relaxnews, December 30, 2013.

Malaysian producer teams up with Hollywood financier

Posted: 30 Dec 2013 02:06 AM PST

December 30, 2013

Malaysian filmmaker and producer, Leon Tan, and veteran Hollywood film financier and producer, Greg Coote, have set up a joint-venture, to fill what they see as a missing piece in the industry locally.

Tan and Coote set up DragonSlate Sdn Bhd to produce world-class films and television shows locally for the global audience.

Speaking to Bernama, Tan said the local film scene was a developing industry, and unlike Hollywood, the expertise and experience in Malaysia needed to be tapped.

"(For the time being) all these can be filled by Coote's network from around the world that will join us in making DragonSlate's films here in Malaysia," he said.

Tan said DragonSlate would eventually reduce its dependency on foreign skills once it had managed to acquire the necessary skills in the film industry.

Training, under the various initiatives by the relevant authorities, such as Multimedia Development Corp, would help Malaysian talents become a skilled workforce, he said.

Tan and Coote hold 45% stake each in DragonSlate and the Malaysia Venture Capital Management (MAVCAP) 10%.

MAVCAP has invested RM10 million in DragonSlate for the company's development, which will be disbursed gradually in three years.

"In filmmaking, it is difficult for independent filmmakers like us to get worldwide (recognition) in order for us to progress, develop ideas, attract directors and talents and even to raise production budget," said Tan.

DragonSlate is Coote's initiative in the expanding Asian media development, including Malaysia where he felt the country has a conducive environment to nurture a world-class film and television production hub.

"Tan and I met years ago in Los Angeles and he talked with the some passion about the Malaysian community and its film industry while I have spent a large part of my life in the region," said Coote.

Coote will co-manage DragonSlate with Tan, who is also chief executive officer of animation/post-production company, Tripod Entertainment Sdn Bhd.

Tan was the producer of Malaysia's award-winning 3D stereoscopic animated feature War of the Worlds: Goliath.

Based in Los Angeles, Coote has had decade-long career in the film business, most recently as chairman and CEO of Dune Entertainment.

During his tenure, Dune Entertainment co-financed over 60 20th Century Fox movies, including James Cameron's Avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time.

DragonSlate had already structured a "slate" of international films into production in 2014, he said.

"We are looking at 15 to 20 projects. And out of these, two or three of the films may likely start production next year," he said.

In the execution of its projects, DragonSlate will actively engage and co-develop the Malaysian ecosystem for world-class fimmaking with other industry players and government initiatives, he said.

The initiatives included Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios and Film In Malaysia Incentive Rebates.

Tan said the company was receptive to joint-ventures with local production companies to produce movies for global audience. - Bernama, December 30, 2013.

Kos persekolahan dijangka naik mendadak, ramal Pemuda PAS

Posted: 30 Dec 2013 02:59 AM PST

December 30, 2013

– 30 Disember, 2013.

KDN beri amaran pihak burukkan mereka kerana gantung The Heat

Posted: 30 Dec 2013 02:51 AM PST

OLEH MOHD FARHAN DARWIS
December 30, 2013

Kementerian Dalam Negeri (KDN) marah dengan tindakan sesetengah pihak yang didakwa cuba memburuk-burukkan kementerian berkenaan di atas tindakan mereka menggantung akhbar mingguan The Heat.

Selain itu KDN mengesahkan penggantungan The Heat bukanlah berterusan, sebaliknya hanya sementara.

Jen.

Spekulasi menyatakan The Heat digantung penerbitan mereka ekoran dakwaan penyiaran artikel berkaitan perbelanjaan boros Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Najib Razak dan isterinya Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

– 30 Disember, 2013.

Apakah peniaga turut perjuangkan Turun harga?

Posted: 29 Dec 2013 05:13 PM PST

December 30, 2013

2014 is about living costs and real reforms

As always, the new year brings with it the desire for change. In this final article for 2013, I decided to approach several friends to know what their hopes are for 2014.

In general, reducing costs of living and real reforms top their wishes.

Ng Wai Kit, a senior executive working with the oil and gas industry, has listed a few wishes, which include increase in government subsidies and removal of the goods and services tax. Unsatisfied with the current government, he wants to see the dissolution of the Parliament to allow another new round of election.

Similarly, Melvin Lee, a Malaysian working in Thailand, wishes that there will be no more price hike and that there will be real reforms in Malaysia political system.

Several friends in Penang, one of whom is Sean Ong, seek real reforms, less politicking and a more transparent leadership for the sake of Malaysia in the near future.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in his second term, has been in a tough battle to regain public confidence in his administration. It is undeniably a tough year ahead for Najib and Barisan Nasional. The old strategy does not work on Malaysians nowadays, especially after 2008 and 2013 polls, as citizens are now generally more politically aware compared to before 2008.

The only way is to implement real reforms, such as by employing good governance, combating corruption, increasing administration efficiency, and most importantly, being vigilant in government spending.

Nelleisa Omar also raised her concern on the economic hardship, and this is especially pressing for those who live in the cities.

I quote, "Since there's a lot of subsidy being pulled out and prices of things increasing, my hope for 2014 is that employers will relook the salary scheme and the government look into ways to make sure the rakyat will be able to sustain themselves. We're all feeling the pinch... So far, I feel lucky to be a Malaysian as I am able to live peacefully, but things could happen if we don't progressively advance ourselves."

What she said is true.

Citizens are left with no choice but to protest the price hike through the formation of various movements, for example, the Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup (Turun). However, more often, the protestors are labelled traitors, which is a false perception.

In his early 20s, Hanifamie, a local university student from Kota Belud, Sabah hopes for a more thorough developmental plan for the country, and for the government to emphasise the developmental issues in the rural areas, not merely focusing in the big cities.

While Naim Muktee, a recent masters graduate, wishes to see a more comprehensive development for youth in terms of religious education, economic capability and knowledge know-how. He also touches on the financial burden that is increasingly difficult, especially for the young generation.

I quote, "I wish the current government could protect and improve the peoples' economic ability to make them feel safe and protected."

Facing the public pressure on economic hardship, Najib said the people should not think his government as "insensitive". Rather, the public is asked to bear with the rising costs, arguing that the move is necessary in order to maintain economic stability.

Such explanation reflects the key problem of the current administration, that there is no comprehensive and careful study on the consequences of certain policies before they are introduced to the public.

Historically, economic trouble is not always followed by social unrest in the country. However, in recent times, there is a shift in such a trend.

Economic hardship, which includes the wide gap of income-inequality and the erosion of trust in the government of the day, is an indicator that 2014 will be even worse for the BN if they are still adamant to listen to public discontent.

The phrase, "topple the government" is now a common term in Malaysia politics. If events in 2013 are any indication, we can expect to hear this phrase even more often in 2014.

It has been a roller-coaster year for Malaysia. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all readers a Happy New Year. Good luck, Malaysia! - December 30, 2013.
