Now, in the form of instant noodles, the dish is set to tantalise taste buds in the West.

MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle came in No. 7 on popular noodle blog Ramen Rater's "Top 10 spiciest instant noodles of all time 2013" and with the "fame", it is set to hit supermarket shelves in Europe and the United States next year.

Its manufacturer, Sky Thomas Food Industries Sdn Bhd, will also repackage the product in cup form by early 2015.

Sky Thomas Food Industries marketing manager Thomas Tang said the product, which was only introduced in May this year, had sold more than 50,000 cartons nationwide, recording a turnover of about RM1.5 million per month up to November.

With one carton containing 48 packages of four packets of noodles each, Sky Thomas has sold 9.6 million packets of its Penang White Curry Noodle locally in six months.

The numbers are impressive, considering that the product is only sold in selected supermarkets, mini-markets and wet markets.

Sky Thomas Food Industries marketing manager Thomas Tang says the firm has big plans for its instant noodles. Sky Thomas Food Industries marketing manager Thomas Tang says the firm has big plans for its instant noodles. "However, we are expanding our local market next year. The product will be available in Giant Hypermarkets and Cold Storage."

He said 60% went to the local market while the rest washipped to Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and the United Kingdom.

"Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore are our biggest clients abroad now. They order a few containers each month," he said.

Sky Thomas' first instant noodle in its MyKuali line was a relatively unknown brand until it shot to global fame after getting a five-star rating from American noodle reviewer, Hans Lienesch, who runs the Ramen Rater noodle blog, in August.

Lienesch, who has reviewed more than 1,000 instant noodles, said MyKuali Penang's White Curry Noodle "is a curry lover's dream".

"This is Malaysia's first time on any of my top 10 lists. This is some really hot and fiery curry. It's also one of the best curry instant noodles I've ever had. The noodles are a little thicker and the curry paste is ample.

"The noodles are a little wider than your typical instant and have a very nice chew to them and are top notch. The broth is amazing; deep curry flavour. Spicy too – really spicy! This broth is so rich... it's a curry lover's dream. I'm very pleased with this one – 5.0 out of 5.0 stars."

The curry mee lost out to five South Korean brands that are constant chart toppers on the blog, and one Indonesian brand, which was ranked fifth. The Indomie noodle included cili padi in the mix.

Asked why Sky Thomas chose curry noodle as its first instant noodle, Tang said it was a hawker staple in Penang.

"It is more familiar to consumers and we hope to take this famous Penang hawker food everywhere in the world," he said, adding that consumers will find the instant noodle a top quality product as it came with curry powder made of more than 30 types of natural ingredients and spices.

Tang, who founded Sky Thomas, said his company is also sending its new MyKuali Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles and Penang Style Tom Yum Noddles to Lienesch for reviews. – December 23, 2013.

Singapore businessman lines up Valencia takeover

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 03:10 PM PST

December 23, 2013

Singaporean businessman Peter Lim has made a bid to take over financially stricken La Liga side Valencia and wipe out its debts, the club's president Amadeo Salvo announced yesterday.

The club's hierarchy has been looking for investors since principal creditor Bankia refused earlier this month to refinance the combined 306 million euro (RM1.3 billion) debt the club and its foundation has with the bank.

Salvo said that Bankia had still to give the green light to Lim's proposal and had asked for more time to study other offers.

However, he insisted that given the 60-year-old is willing to clear the club's debts and invest heavily in the playing squad, Lim's would be a difficult offer to match.

"He has made us a proposal that will clear the debt owed by the foundation and Valencia to Bankia and will invest a significant amount in the first team immediately," said Salvo.

"It is one of the best two or three biggest offers made for a club in world football."

Moreover, according to Salvo, Lim has set a deadline of January 15 for the offer to be accepted so the club can reinforce their squad in the January transfer window with the hope of challenging for the Champions League places come the end of the season.

Lim has previously been linked with investment in football clubs, most notably when he bid for Liverpool in 2010, and has a net worth of $2.3 billion (RM7.5 billion), according to American business magazine Forbes.

Valencia fortunes on and off the field have suffered since a financial crisis struck Spain in 2009.

The club have been unable to finish work on their new Mestalla stadium and have had to sell a number of their best players.

And last week it was announced that Valencia are one of seven Spanish clubs to be investigated by the European Commission for alleged illegal state aid for the role in which local government played in guaranteeing the loans taken out by the club from Bankia. - AFP, December 23, 2013.

Goals galore as Juventus, Roma distance Napoli

Champions Juventus conceded their first goal in nine games but saw Carlos Tevez, Paul Pogba, Fernando Llorente and Arturo Vidal all hit the net in a 4-1 win away to Atalanta.

Early season pacesetters Roma had no trouble disposing of basement side Catania, with Mehdi Benatia hitting a brace and Mattia Destro and Gervinho adding one apiece in a 4-0 win at the Olympic Stadium.

Juventus's 15th win in 17 games means Antonio Conte's men will enjoy a five-point lead over Roma during the Christmas break.

Roma sit second with a five-point lead on Napoli, who saw Fiorentina edge to within three points of third place after Giuseppe Rossi hit an 80th-minute winner for La Viola away to struggling Sassuolo.

Juventus and Roma were not the only sides in goalscoring mood, however, with Verona claiming a 4-1 win at home to Lazio and Torino beating Chievo by the same scoreline at the Olympic Stadium.

Former Italy striker Luca Toni hit a brace for Verona to help secure a ninth win which moved the league newcomers up to fifth at the expense of Inter.

Ciro Immobile also struck twice, with further goals from Giuseppe Vives and Alessio Cerci, as Torino outclassed Chievo 4-1 to reinforce their grip on seventh place.

Elsewhere, Bologna claimed a precious 1-0 home win over Genoa, their third win of the season, to move out of the relegation zone.

Parma were one of the biggest winners on the day, Roberto Donadoni's men securing a 1-1 draw away to Sampdoria which, thanks to results elsewhere, moved them from 13th to eighth.

Two weeks after exiting the Champions League group stages at the hands of Galatasaray and ahead of beginning their Europa League campaign, Juventus turned their attention firmly back on winning a third consecutive scudetto.

Atalanta had conceded defeat only once at home this season, but when a bobbling, low strike from Tevez beat goalkeeper Andrea Consigli in the sixth minute the Bergamo-based side looked to be in for a long afternoon.

The hosts were back on level terms less than 10 minutes later when Maxi Moralez sent a superb curling strike past the outstretched Gianluigi Buffon to end the goalkeeper's eight-match, 745-minute unbeaten streak.

Juve, however, moved up a gear after the interval and after just a minute Pogba beat Consigli from close range after Kwadwo Asamoah's cross from the left was chested down into the Frenchman's path by Llorente.

Llorenta made it three on 75 minutes when he collected Giorgio Chiellini's pass inside the area and turned his marker before beating Consigli at his far post.

Four minutes later Vidal virtually sealed Juve's ninth win on the trot when he was given space at the back post to first-time Stephan Lichsteiner's weighted pass beyond the keeper.

Inter will reclaim fifth place if they at least draw with Milan in yesterday's late game although the Rossoneri, languishing in 13th, will be motivated by the chance to move up to eighth in the event of a win. - AFP, December 23, 2013.

TV chef Nigella Lawson faces drugs probe

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 04:44 PM PST

December 22, 2013

British celebrity chef Nigella Lawson (pic) faces a police investigation into claims of cocaine use which emerged during her personal assistants' fraud trial after a U-turn by Scotland Yard, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

Italian sisters Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo were cleared Friday of fraudulently spending £685,000 (RM3.7 million) on a company credit card owned by Lawson's then-husband, the millionaire art collector Charles Saatchi.

The assistants claimed Lawson had allowed them to spend thousands of pounds on designer handbags, first-class flights and other luxuries if they kept quiet about her cocaine use.

Following the verdict, London's Metropolitan Police said they would not be investigating allegations of drug use by the 53-year-old.

But Commander Stephen Watson told the Telegraph that he didn't think "the full colour of the Metropolitan Police Service's position was conveyed in that statement".

"We will use specialist resources from within the Metropolitan Police Service to examine all the evidence which emerged as part of a review into this matter," explained the senior policeman.

"At some point once that review is included, presumably in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution Service (public prosecutor), we will determine a way forward.

"There are implications in terms of what has been said during the course of that trial and all those implications will be taken into account," he added, according to the paper.

Lawson, a self-styled "domestic goddess" who has made a fortune with her TV series and cookbooks in Britain and the United States, insisted she was not addicted to drugs and had only used cocaine and cannabis occasionally in the past.

The glamorous TV chef complained during the trial that she was treated more like a defendant than a witness, after the assistants' lawyers repeatedly grilled her about the drug allegations.

"Over the three-week trial the jury was faced with a ridiculous sideshow of false allegations about drug use which made focus on the actual criminal trial impossible," she said. - AFP, December 22, 2013.

Despite Israel’s wall, Bethlehem eyes tourist boom

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 08:05 PM PST

The Palestinian territories' top tourist destination is a victim of the barrier which cuts off the town from nearby Jerusalem, just 10 kilometres (six miles) away.

Israel began work on its sprawling barrier, dubbed the "apartheid wall" by Palestinians, in 2002 at the height of the second intifada, or uprising.

It defends the construction as a crucial protective measure, pointing to a drop in attacks inside Israel as proof of its success.

Palestinian tourism minister Rola Maayah sees the barrier as a key obstacle to encouraging visitors to the town.

"Bethlehem, one of our main tourist attractions is circled by 27 settlements. As a result, we are surrounded by high walls, fences and menacing checkpoints which put tourists off," Maayah said.

"We could develop tourism, attract people from all over the world, but it's not possible because of the Israeli occupation," she added.

The expansion of nearby Israeli settlements has deliberately helped to isolate the city, Palestinians say.

But since a Unesco decision in June 2012 to grant world heritage status to Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity – hailed as a "historic" diplomatic victory by the Palestinians – the town has been eyeing a tourist bonanza that could boost the local economy.

In Bethlehem, where nearly one quarter of its 25,000 residents are unemployed, two out of three households rely on tourism for their income.

The record crowds brought much-needed revenues after a tough decade for tourism during the second intifada.

"There was a significant jump in tourism in Palestine in 2012 with an 18 percent rise in the number of visitors," Maayah said. A little over half of these were foreigners.

'Bethlehem is not a museum'

With 3,800 rooms, Bethlehem accounts for nearly half of the West Bank's hotel capacity. But the occupancy rate (65 to 70%) is unevenly distributed throughout the year.

"We are booked up in advance for Christian holidays, but there are lots of empty rooms the rest of the year," said the deputy head of the Bethlehem board of commerce, Fairouz Khoury.

To redress this imbalance, Vera Baboun, a Palestinian Catholic and Bethlehem's first female mayor since 2012, aims to encourage visitors to stay longer.

"Our visitors should know that Bethlehem is not just about the nativity," said Baboun.

The pilgrims – who mostly come from Russia, the United States and Poland – descend on the town by the coachload, queueing to see the Church of the Nativity, one of Christianity's oldest and holiest, leaving immediately afterwards.

Those who linger for more than a few hours are rare.

"This year our motto is 'Come home for Christmas,' which means: take the time to wander around the alleys of the Old City, talk to the residents, help them to live here," Baboun explained.

"Bethlehem is not a museum," she said.

Palestinian tourist guides have also complained they suffer because of the favourable treatment granted to their Israeli competitors.

Some 150 Israelis are authorised to work as guides in Bethlehem, compared with 42 Palestinians permitted to work in Israel and east Jerusalem, the chamber of commerce said.

"They take more than 80% of the market," complained Mohammed Awadallah, a Palestinian guide.

But Israeli authorities, who have long courted the lucrative market in catering to Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land, deny the accusations.

"We do everything we can so that Christians can visit the holy sites," Israeli Tourism Minister Uzi Landau said. - AFP, December 22, 2013.

No breast implants, please, Brazil samba school tells recruits

Revelers of Mocidade Independente samba school. - AFP pic, December 22, 2013.Revelers of Mocidade Independente samba school. - AFP pic, December 22, 2013.Two months before Rio's famed Carnival gets under way, a samba school said it was looking for dancers "without silicone breast implants" and would offer a free costume in exchange.

The school wants to recruit 20 dancers "with beautiful and natural" breasts "whatever the size," the news website G1 reported December 20, citing Paulo Menezes, Carnival producer for the Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel samba school.

In this tropical country where the female body is flaunted, plastic surgery is very common.

Brazil ranks second only to the United States for the number of plastic surgery operations, with more than 800,000 annually.

The most popular are liposuction, followed by breast implants, bum lifts and tummy tucks.

Many of the beauty queens parading atop Carnival floats have undergone plastic surgery.

G1 said the 20 dancers that will be selected by Mocidade will each receive free carnival attire, an estimated value of US$211 to US$504 (RM695 to RM1,660) this year.

Generally, dancers buy their own attire, except those hailing from underprivileged communities who in most cases get them for free.

G1 said the selected dancers "without silicone breast implants" will lead the parade for the Mocidade school, which will vie with 11 other samba schools to be the "2014 Carnival champion" based on their sumptuous displays.

The role of the dancers is seen as crucial as they will leave the first impression on the 70,000 spectators and on the jury in Rio's iconic Sambadrome.

The upcoming Carnival is scheduled from February 28 to March 4. - AFP, December 22, 2013.

‘Rich Malaysia, Poor Malaysians’ shows the economic reality

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 05:55 PM PST

BY MUHAMMAD NAZREEN
December 22, 2013

Does the future look bleak for Malaysia? This is a question many ponder over while dealing with our nation's progress.

The question remains unresolved. We share the same concerns.

As a Malaysian, I believe that we could really be patriotic without favouring any political rulers – thus, living up to the motto "you can love your country without having to love your government".

Hence, we have our own responsibility. So, how inspiring can Malaysia be?

Anas Alam Faizli's recent book, Rich Malaysia, Poor Malaysians, is a conscious attempt to analyse the development of Malaysia throughout its successes and failures.

Malaysia was an example of economic success in the 1960s. Back then, Malaysia was one of the emerging economic tigers. Has the tiger lost its roar now?

Then again, it is now moving towards a different direction.

It outweighs the fact that Malaysia was once a land of dream and opportunity. The rising disparity between social classes with greater inequality scale between the haves and haves-not might prompt us to reconsider our current imagination on Malaysia.

The compilation of essays here provides a refined understanding of Malaysia's current outlook.

Anas' brief introduction touches on energy, the economy and education.

It is written in a simple way, yet articulate enough for ordinary Malaysians to grasp the current reality.

I am sure the author reaffirms the undeniable fact that Malaysia is a rich country with an abundant of resources, but the mismanagement of wealth and exploitative behaviour of rent-seekers have become the main driving forces behind the paradox of the economy.

This book uncovers the hard realities faced by all Malaysians.

The rising cost of living is a difficult moment for all, regardless of their race or religious affiliations.

Amid the escalating cost, wage repression is a stark reality.

The author argues why Malaysians deserve a better future. In "Myth of Rich and Poor", the author attempts to demystify the fact that the poor are simply lazy.

He argues that there are fewer opportunities for ordinary Malaysians to compete in a fair and equal playing field. This is the main reason behind the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer.

Education has become the cornerstone of achievement. It is pertinent to development, though.

However, as emphasised by the author, the worsening performance of our education system every year, as gauged via international assessment ratings, such as Pisa and TIMSS, is a cause of great concern.

Our education policy must have gone wrong somewhere along the line. Malaysia has performed badly in each assessment.

The most shocking part is Vietnam has outperformed Malaysia in terms of rankings.

It is clear our current education system is a huge failure and consequently, it fails to offer a trickle-down solution.

Despite of large sums allocated to education annually, the result has not improved.

The author calls for a revamp on our education system.

He states that the real philosophy of education is to humanise humans with the essence of love.

Philosophy is what our education lacks. The author restates his position on the importance of teaching philosophy as the main curriculum.

It is surprising that not one of our universities has a faculty of philosophy while it was proved that the best universities across the globe have made philosophy a compulsory subject for all students.

The only enlightenment for Malaysian is through the inculcation of a reading culture. The author accounts in detail why a reading culture is part of a high-achieving nation.

He begins by summarising the social catastrophe that accompanies book burnings and when freedom of thought was supressed.

As argued by the author, a reading culture enables society to become more rational and critical in evaluating civilised principles, such as humanity, freedom and liberty.

Throughout his vast experience in the oil and gas industry, the author attempts to retrace the historical context of its development in Malaysia.

It is undeniable that the oil and gas industry has been singled out as the main contributor to our nation's wealth.

However, has the oil and gas industry, particularly Petronas, become the main victim of our economy?

In the first article entitled "Is Petronas an ungrateful child of Malaysia?", the author reiterates the fact that Petronas in its early formative years was a bigger success. However, it is now riddled with mismanagement and exploitation by the few who would later contribute to the deteriorating condition of the economy.

The debacle over oil royalty paid out to producing states has remained a potent cause to stake claims over legitimacy.

The author provides a refining scenario over the matter. He sought to clarify some misconception over the 20% royalty to the oil-producing states that had been compromised during the agreement on the formation of the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974.

Does state ownership or higher royalty blends a secret recipe over Petronas' remarkable success? The book explains...

The author has also put his effort to rethinking the concept of volunteerism. The spirit of volunteerism is vital for democracy to flourish. The author argues why education volunteerism paves the way to help underprivileged students to excel in education.

The remaining essays assert the controversies surrounding Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement which will threaten our economic sovereignty.

The author has also manages to debunk the misconceptions of the fight against the TPP agreement.

The last article, which is no less important, the author recalls his journey during the "Reformasi era" in 1998 which resulted in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's imprisonment.

He spent almost six years in prison over the struggle to reform our political culture. Hence, the author puts his hope on the shoulder of Anwar to take heed in rejuvenating the spirit of "Reformasi".

In conclusion, Rich Malaysia, Poor Malaysians is a must read for all Malaysians.

This book provides a comprehensive account of Malaysia's current challenges and prospects ahead of becoming a high-income nation. – December 22, 2013.

Henti hasrat anjur himpunan tidak berfaedah, kata Ahmad Maslan

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 03:27 AM PST

December 22, 2013

- Bernama, 22 Disember, 2013.

Ini menyebabkan ramai percaya, KDN menggantung The Heat disebabkan rencana muka depan akhbar itu bertajuk "All eyes on big spending Najib", dalam edisi 23-29 November, 2013.

Tiada kemenangan tanpa perlawanan. – 22 Disember, 2013.
