Add to that thick slices of smoked and grilled salmon belly, and it is a Yee Sang to covet, for the different mouthfeel and the lovely truffle aroma.

It's a Yee Sang that the group executive chef of the Oriental Group of Restaurants has put a new spin on and lifted it to a different plane.

We were at Noble House in Kuala Lumpur and the chef explained how he was inspired  after a chat with a French chef from a Michelin-star restaurant.

Together with red cabbage and lettuce, pickled ginger and pickled leek, raisins, lettuce, carrot, radish, mango, fresh coriander, jicama, radish, springExecutive chef Justin Hor puts a different spin on classic Chinese New Year dishes. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014.Executive chef Justin Hor puts a different spin on classic Chinese New Year dishes. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014. onion, kaffir lime leaf, mandarin peel, crackers, peanuts and sesame and the chef's special sauce.

It's a delicious Yee Sang.

You can also have this at Maju Palace, the halal Chinese restaurant under the group.

My other favourite on Justin's Chinese New Year menu was the Crispy Iceland Codfish with Mandarin Orange Cubes.

The lush, crispy fried cod fillet sat on a cut orange lined with bamboo leaves, drizzled with a lightly sweet sauce, a combination of plum sauce and limau kasturi juice.

With crispy cuttlefish on top, and mandarin orange segments beneath, it hit a chord. I loved the delicate, creamy and moist fish and all its trimmings.

Braised Boston Lobster with Shanghai Rice Cake and Kimchi was welcoming in its lightly hot and sour notes.

The kimchi struck a balance with the knobs of rich lobster, and the al dente "nin ko" or Shanghainese rice cake, a must for the New Year.

The BraiThe Crispy Iceland Codfish with Mandarin Orange Cubes. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014.The Crispy Iceland Codfish with Mandarin Orange Cubes. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014.sed Stuffed Money Bag with Dried Oyster and Fatt Choy is a classic festive dish.

The chef used Japanese beancurd puffs which have a denser and finer texture than our local ones.

These were stuffed with mushrooms, plump dried oysters and prawn and pork paste and finished with a sauce with dried scallops and broccoli.

The moneybags made luscious bites, with squishes of flavourful sauce from the soft beancurd puffs.

The Braised Six Treasures Chicken in Wok seemed similar in taste to the moneybags. Again it's another classic New Year dish, with a deepfried spring chicken stuffed with chestnuts, arrowroot, Korean oysters, two types of mushrooms and dried scallop.

It would be a choice of this or the Stuffed Moneybags if you are arranging the menu for your lunch and dinner.

We were doing a sampling of the dishes from the various set menus and the a la carte one.

I always like seng kua or petola, and this appeared in the Stir-fried Shank's Tendon with Seng Kua and Waxed Meat.

There are nice, clear flavours in this dish, with the soft tendon nudging against smooth, crunchy black fungus, chunks of fried garlic and the sweet juicy seng kua.

A few slices of waxed meat gave it a lovely aroma.Stirfried Shank Tendon with Seng Kua and Waxed Meat. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014.Stirfried Shank Tendon with Seng Kua and Waxed Meat. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014.

It's a pleasant diversion from the rich dishes you normally encounter in a festive feast.

The Spinach with Yam and Chinese Sausage in Claypot is like a stew, with minced pork, deepfried dried prawns, mushrooms, sausage and diced yam, with the lively green of spinach in the centre.

It's a stew to eat with rice and definitely one for the children.

Stirfried Glutinous Rice with Whole Abalone in Pumpkin was stunning in presentation.

A small abalone oozing with its sauce was perched on top of the rice in the whole pumpkin, a Taiwanese variety.

I hOyster and Fatt Choy. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014.Oyster and Fatt Choy. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 31, 2014.ad the velvety, sweet and tender abalone on its own while digging into all the "treasures" of the sticky rice that had been stir-fried, a technique that demands a lot of skill.

I turned up Chinese sausage, dried scallop, mushroom and har kon (the Hong Kong variety of dried prawns) in the glutinous rice, while spooning out some of the sweet pumpkin. It was scrumptious.

The prices: the Grilled Salmon Belly and White Truffle Vegetables Yee Sang is RM138++ for a table of 10, Crispy Iceland Codfish RM18++ each, Braised Boston Lobster RM33++ per 100g, Braised Stuffed Moneybag RM48++ per person, Brasied Six Treasures Chicken RM98++ each, Stirfied Shank's Tendon RM58++ per portion, Stirfried Glutinous Rice with Whole Abalone in Pumpkin RM48++ each and Spinach with Yam and Chinese Sausage in Claypot RM28++ per portion.

There are set menus ranging from RM128++ to RM688++ per person, and from RM999++ and RM1288++ for 10 persons to RM4988++.

Noble House is at 19, Jalan Delima, off Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, tel 03-2145 8822. – January 31, 2014.

Southampton’s Osvaldo heading to Juventus in loan deal

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:35 PM PST

January 31, 2014

Southampton's controversial forward Dani Osvaldo is set to join Serie A leaders Juventus on loan after only six months with the English Premier League club, Italian media reported yesterday.

Gazzetta dello Sport said the fiery Italy international, who became Southampton's club-record signing when he joined for US$24.75 million (RM82.83 million) from AS Roma in August, would be loaned out subject to a medical in Turin today.

Juve, who have to pay US$542,500 for the loan, would also have an option to buy the 28-year-old for 18 million euros, Gazzetta added. Sky Sports also said a deal was imminent.

Osvaldo was suspended by Southampton last Thursday for two weeks following an incident at the club's training ground which British media said was a bust-up with team mate Jose Fonte.

Southampton did not disclose what had happened but said in a statement: "The club has taken swift and proper action for what it considers a breach of the conduct expected of its players."

Earlier this month Osvaldo, who has only scored three goals in 12 appearances for Southampton, was fined 40,000 pounds and banned for three matches by the English FA for his part in a touchline fracas against Newcastle United in December.

Osvaldo, who has 12 international caps, has a history of disciplinary problems. He was also kicked out of Italy's Confederations Cup squad last year after throwing a tantrum during Roma's defeat by Lazio in the Coppa Italia final.

TV cameras caught Osvaldo apparently insulting Roma coach Aurelio Andreazzoli after being left out of the starting line-up.

He began his career in Argentina with Huracan and has also played for Atalanta, Lecce, Fiorentina and Bologna in Italy and Espanyol in Spain. – Reuters, January 31, 2014.

Brazilian free kick maestro Juninho Pernambucano has ended a glittering 20-year career by retiring from soccer.

"We spoke during the week and he has decided to retire," Vasco da Gama president Roberto Dinamite told reporters yesterday.

He won league championships in 1997 and 2000, a Copa Libertadores in 1998 and a Copa Mercosul in 2000. He scored 76 goals for the Rio club.

Juninho also had a hugely successful career in France with Olympique Lyon, winning the Ligue 1 title seven years in a row between 2002-08.

He also represented Brazil at the 2006 World Cup and helped them lift the Confederations Cup the year before.

Juninho was best known for his incredible free kicks and could hit the ball with pace and accuracy from any angle or distance.  – Reuters, January 31, 2014.

Venezuelan president blames soap operas for crime

But while he accuses the wildly popular "telenovelas" of spreading negative values, his critics say he is grappling for excuses instead of taking responsibility.

Venezuela's reputation as one of the most violent countries in the world was reinforced by the high-profile murder earlier this month of former beauty queen turned actress Monica Spear and her British-born partner on a deserted highway.

They were shot in front of their five-year-old daughter Maya, who was injured.

The fatal armed robbery made headlines around the world and prompted Maduro to launch a major campaign against the violence that plagues Venezuela.

As part of his response, the socialist president homed in on television, ordering a review of programming on all Venezuela's channels and saying that he would build "a new film and television culture".

He particularly had "telenovelas" in his sights – ironically, Spear was the star of one of them – saying they were spreading "anti-values " such as "death, the cult of drugs, weapons and violence."

Warming to the theme, he recently declared, referring to the popular series "De Todas Maneras Rosa": "I do not watch novelas because I do not have time, but I saw one where the heroine kills her own mother. How can she be the heroine of the story?"

Murder rates continue to rise in Venezuela, now up to between 39 and 79 per 100,000 victims annually, according to figures from the government and local NGOs respectively.

Even the lower figure is among the highest in South America.

"To put the magnifying glass on the telenovelas in Venezuela is a mistake and it is irresponsible because all Venezuelans know crime has nothing to do with that and is about more complex structural causes," said the television writer Leonardo Padron.

The government is trying "to hide its own responsibility," he said, adding that 92% of homicides go unpunished and that the authorities do not have a "firm hand" on criminals.

In an open letter, the screenwriter writer of "De Todas Maneras Rosa," Carlos Perez, said that the character Maduro had criticised was not the heroine of the soap opera, but a wicked woman "irreversibly doomed to fail and be punished for her wickedness".

The telenovelas always describe "a battle of good against evil, and good always reigns over evil," Perez said.

Socialist novelas

Carolina Acosta, a professor of mass media at University of Georgia, also dismissed Maduro's criticism.

"We cannot say that telenovelas incite violence," she said, noting that no studies back up the assertion.

Venezuelans like their television, spending an average of six hours a day glued to the small screen. But interference from the very top has a precedent.

Maduro's predecessor and mentor, the late Hugo Chavez, in 2011 prohibited the dissemination of popular "narconovelas," Colombian or Mexican television series that for many people reflected the reality of drug trafficking.

In 2010 Chavez called for the production of "socialist novelas".

Six years earlier, a ruling prohibited scenes of sex or violence on radio and television.

"Most telenovelas conform to a model. Through the stories, love or action can be transmitted into humanistic values ," said Delfina Catala, who last year produced "Teresa en Tres Estaciones," considered the first "socialist" series.

Scriptwriters are finding that the boundaries keep narrowing – but point out that crime keeps going up.

"For example, you cannot show scenes with a compulsive gambler in a casino," said Acosta.

And it is becoming "very difficult" to address issues such as sex, drugs or alcohol, Padron added. – AFP, January 30, 2014.

Boy-band One Direction year’s best-sellers

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 05:37 PM PST

January 30, 2014

British pop phenomenon One Direction (pic) were today named the world's most popular recording artists of 2013 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

Band member Niall Horan called it "incredible news" and thanked fans for the newly-created award, which aggregates CD and vinyl sales, download sales and streaming numbers.

"It's great to have a chart that includes everything from iTunes and record stores, to YouTube and Spotify," he said. "Again a huge thank you to all of our fans for such an amazing 2013."

The boy-band's third studio album, "Midnight Memories" raced to the top of the US Billboard Top 200 chart, making the five-piece the first group in US chart history to debut at No. 1 with their first three albums.

Their video for "Best Song Ever" attracted almost 200 million views on YouTube.

US rapper Eminem claimed second spot thanks to his eighth studio album "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" while third place was taken by former boy-band member Justin Timberlake. - AFP, January 30, 2014.

Justin Bieber turns himself in to Toronto police

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 05:03 PM PST

January 30, 2014

Pop singer Justin Bieber arrives at a police station in Toronto, yesterday. - Reuters pic, January 30, 2014.Pop singer Justin Bieber arrives at a police station in Toronto, yesterday. - Reuters pic, January 30, 2014.Canadian pop star Justin Bieber appeared at a Toronto police station yesterday after reports that he would be charged with assault over a December incident in the city involving a limousine driver.

Bieber arrived in a black SUV and was met by a crowd of journalists as well as screaming fans braving temperatures of minus 10 Celsius.

Wearing a baseball cap on backwards and hooded black coat, Bieber was mobbed by photographers and fans pushing for a closer look as bodyguards and police officers cleared a path for him to enter the station.

Earlier, Toronto police said on their Twitter feed that they could not confirm information in the media about Bieber. Staff Sergeant Deb Abbott at the station told Reuters that if someone notable were charged, police would issue a press statement and there would be no press conference.

Bieber's representatives declined to immediately comment on the reported charges.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp, citing unidentified police sources, said Bieber would be charged in relation to an incident that happened in December after he attended a Toronto Maple Leafs game.

Bieber, 19, has been in trouble with authorities in the United States this month. He was charged with driving under the influence in Miami after police caught him drag racing a rented Lamborghini. He told police he had taken prescription medicine, had been smoking marijuana and had consumed alcohol.

According to court records, he pleaded not guilty yesterday to those charges in a written plea submitted by his lawyer. If convicted, Bieber could face up to six months in prison, although experts say he is likely to receive a lighter sentence because it would be his first offence.

Bieber is scheduled to make a court appearance on February 14 to formally answer the charges. He was also charged with driving on an expired license and resisting arrest without violence.

Bieber, a native of Ontario, Canada, first shot to fame as a child when his mother posted YouTube videos of him singing. He became a musical and social media sensation with a devoted following of young, mainly female fans.

The "Boyfriend" singer's life off-stage has been rocky in the last year with problems ranging from scuffling with paparazzi in London to a felony investigation into whether he pelted a neighbor's house with eggs in his gated community near Los Angeles.

Also yesterday, a online petition asking the Obama administration to deport Bieber after his Miami arrest from the United States, passed the 100,000 signature threshold required for a White House response.

Bieber was unlikely to be deported because federal law dictates that a visa can only be revoked or denied for a conviction of a violent crime with a minimum one year prison sentence. - Reuters, January 30, 2014.

Former French first lady says may write a book

The former partner of France's President Francois Hollande was in India for humanitarian work with the charity Action Against Hunger. - Reuters pic, January 30, 2014.France's former first lady Valerie Trierweiler has revealed she may write a book about her split with the president and said she is "more disappointed than angry" about the scandal.

In an interview with Parisien Magazine to be published on Friday, Trierweiler described her visit to India this week as a "return to freedom, far from the political world and its betrayals".

President Francois Hollande has faced criticism over the curt manner in which he announced at the weekend that he had split from Trierweiler after his affair with an actress, in a brief statement to AFP.

The former first lady said she was "more disappointed than angry" about the break-up.

But she added, "I do not rule out writing a book", and observed dryly that her former partner's statement announcing the split amounted to "eighteen words, nearly one for each month together since his election".

She said she had replied to text messages from Hollande while in India.

"He was worried about the organisation of the trip and about my health," Trierweiler said.

Trierweiler gave the interview during a two-day visit to India on behalf of a French charity that saw her visit a slum and witness a feeding programme for malnourished children.

In it, she said she was "keen to return to a normal life as quickly as possible because I do not want to be part of the celebrity set, and I will not be part of it."

The 48-year-old, who is still employed as an arts writer by the French magazine Paris Match, said she planned to continue charity work rather than returning to her previous role as a political journalist.

The prospect of covering Hollande would be "too complicated" she admitted at the end of the trip. - AFP, January 30, 2014.

Khalid jawab Mais: Agensi agama perlu selari kerajaan pilihan rakyat

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

Serbuan Jais terhadap premis PBM menimbulkan pelbagai kesan termasuk respons Mais terhadap arahan kerajaan negeri Selangor. - Gambar The Malaysian Insider. Serbuan Jais terhadap premis PBM menimbulkan pelbagai kesan termasuk respons Mais terhadap arahan kerajaan negeri Selangor. - Gambar The Malaysian Insider.

– 30 Januari, 2014.
