Singaporean bar helps shy singles meet with beer QR codes

SINGAPORE, Sept 13 — To increase flagging beer sales and help shy singles meet their potential soulmates, a pub chain in Singapore has developed a modern-day 'message in a bottle' scheme that allows smitten barflies to send anonymous messages to strangers with QR codes.

The mission was twofold at Harry's Bar in Singapore: increase sales during happy hour, and make the pub a more social place.

What they came up with was a 21st century version of buying a stranger a drink. Pitched mainly towards shy Singaporean men, the scheme works with QR code tags that come with the purchase of a beer.

After downloading the Harry's Bottle Message app, users scan the QR code with their smartphone, write a message anonymously, and then send over the tag along with the bottle of beer to their target of choice.

The recipient then scans the same code to read their message and the pair can then begin to chat over the smartphone, hopefully with the aim of taking it offline.

According to a promotional video, men bought twice as much beer with the concept, while reaction among the women was 'priceless.'

Meanwhile, using QR codes – short for Quick Response – to find love is becoming another digital trend among lonely hearts. In Vancouver, for instance, singletons looking for love used QR code technology to instantly scan the profiles of prospective partners at a Valentine's Day QR Meet-Up last year. — AFP-Relaxnews

YANGON, Sept 13 — After a 60-year absence, the largest beverage behemoth in the world has returned to one of the last remaining virgin markets on the planet, delivering the first cases of Coca-Cola to locals in Myanmar.

A photo released this week shows Coca-Cola CEO and Chairman Muhtar Kent handing over a case of cans to a local girl in front of a small shop bearing a Coca-Cola banner in Burmese script.

Now that Myanmar has received its first shipment, the only two countries in the world where the iconic red and white beverage is not sold are Cuba and North Korea.

The company had previously announced intentions to make "significant investments" in Myanmar over the next five years. Until then, the products will be imported from neighbouring countries.

The formerly reclusive country is opening up to the world at a frenzied pace, with investors and brands like MasterCard signing a landmark deal that will pave the way for electronic payments for tourists as well as the 50 million residents, for whom most financial transactions are made in cash.

Similarly, Singapore Airlines will be starting a daily service to the country's largest city Yangon next month, to meet business and tourist demand. — AFP-Relaxnews

Dortmund’s Reus fit for Leverkusen clash

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 08:20 AM PDT

BERLIN, Sept 12 – Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus will be fit to play against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday after a foot injury picked up in Germany's 2-1 victory over Austria in a 2014 World Cup qualifier turned out to be bruising.

Reus (picture) fired Germany into a 44th minute lead yesterday but was injured in the process.

"Reus suffered only a bruise in his foot. That is the result of a medical check today," Dortmund said on Wednesday. "His participation in the league game against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday is not in danger."

The German footballer of the year joined two-times defending Bundesliga champions Dortmund from Borussia Moenchengladbach in the close season in a deal reportedly worth €17 million (RM67.10 million).

Dortmund are in sixth place in the standings on four points from two games, two behind leaders Bayern Munich, with Reus having scored once. – Reuters

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 06:55 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 – Women's World number one squash player Datuk Nicol David launched her eighth title quest by moving into the quarterfinals of the CIMB Malaysian Open championship by thrashing Donna Urquhart of Australia at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil, here tonight.

In today's second round match, Nicol took 50 minutes to beat her opponent in 11-6, 8-11, 11-8 and 11-7.

"It was a very tough fight. Donna played good, she made mistakes at the beginning but came out stronger throughout the set. I was working hard after my third game and was thinking I had to play one more game. It was a great match," said Nicol.

In tomorrow's quarterfinal, Nicol will be facing Annie Au of Hong Kong, who defeated Kasey Brown of Australia 11-7, 11-8, 11-8.

"I will play Annie tomorrow, knowing her, I just have to be sharp from the beginning, she is very sharp player, and I can't give anything away. Must be right from the start, it will be good match tomorrow," said Nicol.

Wee Wern put up an excellent performance, beating world number five, Madeline Perry of Ireland in a tough match today.

Wee Wern, 22, took 62 minutes to defeat her opponent in 11-3, 9-11, 11-4, and 11-8.

She is scheduled to meet world number four, Jenny Duncalf of England who defeated Camille Serme of France in straight sets of  11-5, 11-4, 11-7.

"The last time I played Jenny she wasn't feeling well, so I won the match in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Open Championship) last year. She stopped playing recently due to injuries, and I think she is back in form now, I look forward to a good match with her tomorrow.

"I think today I played very well. I'm very happy with the way I'm hitting the ball, it's a great feeling after training so hard," said Wee Wern.

In the men's category, Mohd Nafiizwan, playing under a wild card ticket, sprang a surprise after he managed to beat Adrian Grant of England in the first round match today.

Palestinian farmers wither in tough climate

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 08:46 AM PDT

BEIT UMMAR, West Bank, Sept 12 — Once a mainstay of the local economy, Palestinian agriculture in the rocky West Bank is in decline as farmers struggle to protect their livelihoods and their lands.

Deprived of water and cut off from key markets, farmers across the occupied territory can only look on with a mix of anger and envy as Israeli settlers copiously irrigate their own plantations and export at will.

The pressure to keep farming is strong, not least because Palestinian farmers believe that Israel and Jewish settlers will expropriate their farmland if they leave it uncultivated.

But with restrictions on water use and land, what farmers produce often fails to match the lower cost or higher quality of what Israel supplies to the Palestinian stores.

Palestinian agriculture represented just six per cent of gross domestic product in 2010 from 13.7 per cent in 1994, the World Bank said. The Palestinian statistics bureau said where the sector employed 22 per cent of the workforce in 1994, now it employs just 12.7 per cent.

"Palestinian farmers are fighting a daily, losing battle against Israeli restrictions on land and water," Palestinian Minister of Agriculture Walid Assaf told Reuters.

In a report issued this month, a United Nations agency said the impact of the Israeli occupation on the productive base of the Palestinian economy, and especially its once-flourishing agriculture, "has been devastating."

"The economy has lost access to 40 per cent of West Bank land, 82 per cent of its ground water, and more than two thirds of its grazing land," said the UN trade and development agency, UNCTAD.

Under agreements signed in 1994, Israel controls more than 80 per cent of West Bank water resources by occupying the areas where the water is most plentiful. International aid groups say it is much more generous in distributing the water to its own citizens than the Palestinians, who claim not just the territory, but also the underground aquifers, for themselves.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International says Palestinians on average use 70 litres of water a day while Israelis and Jewish settlers consume an average 300 litres a day.

The differential is even more stark in settler communities in the Jordan Valley and northern Dead Sea, where, according to the Israeli rights group B'Tselem, residents used some 1,312 litres a day in 2008, mainly for agriculture.

This was almost 18 times more than the amount of water made available to Palestinians, the group said in a 2011 report. It said the monthly cost of water for Palestinians was three times more than that paid by settlers.

The direct result of this is easily visible.

While fruit orchards in the farming town of Beit Ummar, north of the city of Hebron, are parched as they rely only on scarce rainfall, a settler farm across the way is lined with black pipes for regular hosing, allowing for faster growth. Lush green, the rows of fruit trees were all picked months ago.

"These plums will sell for 1 shekel (RM0.75) a kilo, almost for free! The Israeli plums have already been on the market for one month," said Um Hussein, a 75-year-old woman picking dusty fruit off her tree in an orchard adjacent to a Jewish settlement.

"We can barely afford drinking water, let alone water the trees," says farmer Nafez Khalaylah.

Palestinian farmers in most West Bank areas cannot drill new wells without Israeli permission – something European Union diplomats say hardly ever happens.

Israel says it is already giving Palestinians more water than was agreed in the 1994 interim Oslo peace accords. They say a definitive division of resources can only be decided in a final peace deal – something that has proved elusive in years of mutual recrimination and missed chances.

Tied to the past

Israeli agriculture experts say the Palestinians could do much more with their land if they adopted modern farming methods including using "drip technology" and modern fertilisers, but again Palestinians counter that it comes down to ample water supplies and unrestricted access to imports.

The locals certainly receive little help or encouragement from the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the West Bank. It allocates a mere one percent of its budget to farming, despite the sector's importance. In a speech aimed at ending recent protests against tax hikes, Prime Minister Salam Fayyad this week promised to do more for the sector.

Farmers also say they are denied access to some of the West Bank's most fertile land, especially in so-called Area C, which includes the Jordan Valley and is controlled by the Israelis.

Rights group Peace Now says Israel has declared 25,000 acres or 16 per cent of the West Bank as "state land" since 1967 and annexed it to settlements. Other areas are still under scrutiny.

In August, the Israeli authority which administers the West Bank, COGAT, ordered a group of farmers near Jericho, close to the Dead Sea, to tear up over 35,000 date palm trees, and leave the land.

COGAT told Reuters the trees had been planted illegally because they were on land where ownership is still to be established. It said in a written statement that the farmers had also been illegally siphoning water from Israeli sources.

Palestinian farmers and officials say the land is owned by the Islamic waqf, a kind of religious trust, which the farmers have been renting for years. They say Israel is threatened by the success of their crop, the sweet, fat Medjoul date, one of the world's most expensive varieties.

Jewish settlements nearby grow Medjoul dates too. Several neighbouring Islamic countries are now boycotting their produce.

Going to waste

Palestinian farmers also say Israel restricts the entry of West Bank produce to key markets, namely Jerusalem, once the commercial centre for Palestinians. All produce destined to Israel or for export must through Israeli checkpoints and subject to lengthy checks and procedures, significantly increasing production costs and decreasing profitability.

Palestinians imported US$72.2 million (RM2.17 billion) worth of fruit and vegetables from Israel in 2010, while their own farmers exported just US$2.92 million of their produce and often laboured to sell it at home, official local statistics show.

At a wholesale outlet, farmer Mohammad Awad sits surrounded by stacks of plums and 10 tonnes of Beit Ummar grapes – once much sought after, but now unsold and starting to ferment.

Awad says their only potential market is in the north of the West Bank, where plums and grapes are not grown. But the stalls there are filled with more aesthetic-looking, albeit more expensive Israeli grapes, for 5 shekels a kilo.

"These grapes will end up being sold to a winery for a half shekel a kilo," Awad says, taking a deep drag of his cigarette. "I've been telling farmers not to pick their fruit, there is no market for them," he says.

Once dubbed Palestine's fruit basket, now farmers leave some of their crop to rot in the sun-baked orchards, unwilling to sell it at a loss.

With the sector beset by so many problems, it is little wonder that many farmers are throwing in the towel.

Nafez Khalaylah recalls how 20 years ago, hundreds of farmers would leave their homes every day at five in the morning and walk towards their orchards.

"Now I work all day and I do not see one single farmer, or one single cheerful person," he says.

The owner of 80 trees, he is barely able to make ends meet. Last year, plums sold for 2 shekels a kilo against some 4 shekels in the 1980s. "Maybe next year, we won't be able to sell them at all," he says ruefully. —  Reuters

Omega-3 fatty acids don’t reduce stroke, heart attack, says study

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 08:28 AM PDT

Health professionals, backed by a number of clinical trials, for years have touted the health benefits of omega-3. — AFP-Relaxnews pic

WASHINGTON, Sept 12 — Omega-3 fatty acids, hailed by some for properties said to enhance heart health, were found to have no effect in reducing the risk of stroke, heart attack or death, according to a study released yesterday.

The study, which followed nearly 70,000 patients at a hospital in Greece who were given supplements of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, is published in the September 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Researchers said patients at the University Hospital of Ioannina did not show a statistically significant reduction in death or heart illness, and questioned whether omega-3 should be administered proactively when trying to optimize a patient's heart health.

"Our findings do not justify the use of omega-3 as a structured intervention in everyday clinical practice or guidelines supporting dietary omega-3," said Evangelos Rizos, chief author of the study.

After examining 20 studies comprising a total of 68,680 randomized patients, the researchers said there were 7,044 deaths, 3,993 cardiac deaths, 1,150 sudden deaths, 1,837 heart attacks, and 1,490 strokes.

An analysis of those figures indicated no "statistically significant" association with all-cause mortality, cardiac death, sudden death, heart attack, and stroke when all supplement studies were considered.

Health professionals, backed by a number of clinical trials, for years have touted the health benefits of omega-3, but the authors noted that other studies have failed to support those health claims.

The report in JAMA noted that some national regulatory agencies in Europe have approved the administration of omega-3 supplements to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke.

The report said it is possible that studies showing some heart health benefit from taking omega-3 fatty acids "may be due to their ability to lower triglyceride levels, prevent serious arrhythmias, or even decrease platelet aggregation and lower blood pressure."

The researchers concluded that more research is needed, including "an individual patient data meta-analysis ... to refine possible associations related to, among others, dose, adherence, baseline intake, and cardiovascular disease risk group." — AFP-Relaxnews

NEW YORK, Sept 12 — French beauty house Yves Saint Laurent unveiled the campaign for its new fragrance Manifesto, starring American actress Jessica Chastain.

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), the video, set to the music of Selah Sue's "Just Because I Do," opens with Chastain (The Tree of Life) finger painting using the fragrance's signature purple. She then turns into a buyer at a posh auction house.

Chastain's involvement is no surprise, as Yves Saint Laurent had announced in June that she was to become the new face of the feminine fragrance.

The Manifesto range includes a shower gel and a deodorant, and a 30ml spray is priced at €54 (RM210.6).

Gwyneth Paltrow named best dressed woman by People magazine

LOS ANGELES, Sept 12 — Actress Gwyneth Paltrow was named the "World's Best Dressed Woman" of 2012 by People magazine today, wowing the celebrity magazine with a simple elegant style that avoids some of fashion's quirkier trends.

The Oscar-winning actress, 39, and wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, headed a list of the year's style mavens that included Prince William's wife Kate, R&B star Rihanna, and the Kardashian family of TV reality show fame.

People said the list was compiled after soliciting input from the celebrity magazine's 42 million readers, its editors and fashion bloggers.

While Oscar-winner Paltrow won the best dressed title, fashion icon Kate Middleton - formally known as the Duchess of Cambridge - was named the woman with the best classic style.

Paltrow's stylist, Elizabeth Saltzman, told People that the actress was not a slave to trends. "She doesn't do fringe. She has a uniform. It's simple, not overdone," Saltzman said.

Emma Stone, the 23-year-old star of "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Help," was chosen as having the best red carpet style, while singer Rihanna was praised for taking the most risks in her fashion choices.

Actresses Jessica Alba (best jeans), Jennifer Lawrence (best under 25s), and Reese Witherspoon (best pregnancy) also made the top 10, along with Australian model Miranda Kerr.

Among men, honors went to actors Andrew Garfield, Brad Pitt, Colin Firth, Robert Pattinson, Chris and Liam Hemsworth and singer Jay-Z.

People also looked back at some of the fashion faux pas of 2012. The magazine recalled an orange lace dress worn with prominent black underwear by pop singer Fergie, and a floral floor-length dress worn by Sarah Jessica Parker that fashion blogger Heather Cocks said made the "Sex and the City" actress look like a cast member of polygamy TV reality show "Sister Wives."

People's special Best & Worst Dressed double issue hits news stands on Friday and can be seen online at www.people.com/bestdressed. — Reuters

Don’t give men permission to be creeps

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 05:12 PM PDT

SEPT 12 ― I wish men wouldn't get defensive when women talk about being sexually harassed or assaulted.

"You could have just said no."

The truth is, short of taking a warhammer to the skull, a lot of men behaving inappropriately towards women don't seem to get that what they're doing is wrong.

Right about now, my friend Calvin would chime in with: "I blame society."

And he's right.

Any woman should be able to walk down a street ― any street, at any time ― without worrying some man would try and avoid her personal space or worse force himself on her.

Yet there's something wrong when a woman, instead of being asked if she's okay, is instead quizzed on whether she had "attracted" the unwanted attention. That maybe she "asked for it."

Some people think that it's just the girls who dress like "sluts" who get molested. Then explain grandmothers. Babies. Random women walking down the street or girls unfortunate enough to be born pretty like this girl who shared her story on the Internet.

I remember telling a male friend of mine I was literally chased by a small gang of men in a mall and his reply was: "Why? You're not that hot."

Of course I busted his chops because, see, the point here was I was genuinely terrified and distraught. It wasn't about the degree of my hotness not warranting the attention.

The thing is, any woman could be a victim. Any woman could attract creeps because sadly, too many men believe that women can be treated like blow-up dolls.

Hey, that stranger has a nice rack, I think I'll squeeze it like I do watermelons.

Hey, that girl's really pretty: if I annoy her enough, maybe she'll give in and give me her number or even something more.

Author John Scalzi wrote a nice guide on how not to be a creep. One good tip he gives: "Acknowledge that other people do not exist just for your amusement/interest/desire/use."

It's time society became a lot less tolerant of men behaving badly though if a woman was acting inappropriately towards a man, of course she should be called out on it.

But here's the thing.

A man's less likely to have a woman respond to rejection by calling him a slut or whore.

A man's less likely to have a woman attempt to fondle his private parts in public.

A man's less likely to be stalked by someone fully intending to take advantage of him.

A man's less likely to be walking past a place of business and be the target of catcalling or lewd sexual innuendoes.

Like, really. It's far less likely that a man will need to carry pepper spray because a woman could be right around the corner waiting to bundle him into her car and have her way with him.

My point here is: Don't blame the women when some men start being jerks. It's the jerks who need educating.

Selak punggong pada gambar Najib

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 04:55 PM PDT

Adakah ia adil?

Jawab baginda, "Tidak patut."

Baginda bertaubat.

Perdana Menteri Najib bukan nabi. Tidak malaikat datang menyindirnya. Tetapi Allah kirim budak-budak menghina gambarnya.

Roh Najib selamat jika jawapannya diperkenan Allah.

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 01:25 AM PDT
