Johor takes over top spot with 2-1 win

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 02:55 PM PST

March 03, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 – Johor Darul Takzim took over the top spot in the Super League when they edged Negri Sembilan 2-1 at the Tan Sri Hassan Yunos Stadium, Larkin, tonight.

Dubbed Southern Tigers, they topped the table by collecting 16 points from 16 matches to topple the Malaysian Armed Forces to the second spot with one point difference.

Johor Darul Takzim had an early scare when Negri Sembilan opened scoring in the 28th minute through midfielder Rashid Mahmud.

However, they came back from behind to equalise late in the second half in the 82nd minute through a header by defender Kamarul Afiq Kamaruddin and found the winner in the dying minutes of the game through Mohd Nurul Azwan Roya.

At the Shah Alam Stadium, Terengganu beat Selangor PKNS 2-0 with both goals scored in the first half with Jean Emmanuel Effa Owona making a breakthrough in the eight minute and Abdul Manaf Mamat in the 27th minute.

Singapore's Lions XII were held to a scoreless draw by Felda United at the Petaling Jaya City Stadium, Selangor.

Wrestling champion goes on hunger strike over Games axe

March 02, 2013

Wrestling is considered the oldest sport in the world and one of the original Olympic events. — WikiMedia CommonsMOSCOW, March 2 — Olympic wrestling champion Armen Nazaryan has decided to go on a hunger strike to protest against the sport's possible exclusion from the Games.

"I'm protesting against the recommendation to drop wrestling from the Olympics," Nazaryan, 38, was quoted as saying by the Russian wrestling federation on its website (http://www.wrestrus.ru).

"Wrestling has always been part of the Olympic programme and it's not right to exclude it from the Games. I'm starting my hunger strike and from now on I will drink only syrup," said Armenia-born Nazaryan, who won gold in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1996 Atlanta Games, competing for his native country.

He then switched his allegiance to Bulgaria, winning his second Olympic title four years later in Sydney. Nazaryan also won three world titles for Bulgaria from 2002 to 2005.

Last month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made a surprise recommendation to drop the ancient sport from the 2020 Summer Games.

The decision has outraged the wrestling community throughout the world, prompting two former champions, Bulgaria's Valentin Yordanov and Russia's Sagid Murtazaliev, to return their Olympic gold medals back to the IOC in protest.

Part of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and all further editions, except the 1900 Paris Games, wrestling now joins seven other candidates battling for one spot in a revamped programme.

The IOC executive board will meet in St Petersburg in May to determine which of them will be put to the vote at the IOC session in Buenos Aires in September. — Reuters

Earth Hour says campaign spreads to 50 countries

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 04:54 AM PST

March 02, 2013

SINGAPORE, March 2 – A campaign by global environmental movement Earth Hour to get promises of action from individuals and organisations has spread to at least 50 countries, its chief executive said on Wednesday.

Andy Ridley said the "I Will If You Will" campaign, launched in 2012 in 13 countries, is expected to expand its geographic reach almost fourfold this year, strengthening the group's impact beyond an annual lights-out event.

"Last year we rolled out 'I Will If You Will' to 13 countries and territories so it's basically a pilot project to see if it would work," Ridley told journalists in Singapore.

"It worked. So this year, instead of 13, it will be at least 50, we already have at least 50 countries confirmed."

Last year the campaign spurred a 120,000-strong petition in Russia that galvanised parliament to pass a law protecting the seas from oil pollution.

Former Botswana president Festus Mogae also pledged to plant one million indigenous trees in four years.

The countries involved last year included Singapore, Sweden, Hong Kong and the United States. This year's participating countries include Australia, Britain and South Korea, with celebrities expected to make pledges.

Singapore-based Earth Hour's headline campaign is an annual lights-out activity to underscore energy conservation. It was observed in 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories last year, the group said.

This year's Earth Hour is scheduled for March 23 at 8:30 pm in participating locations.

Ridley, speaking at the global launch of Earth Hour 2013, said the Asia-Pacific region gives the movement its strongest support.

"Asia-Pacific, as a region, is by far the strongest, and Latin America is probably the second," he said.

"Many campaigns are based out of Europe and based out of the US, Earth Hour is not and maybe that's a really good strength for us." – AFP/Relaxnews

Travellers, beware! Ten scams to watch out for

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 03:28 PM PST

March 02, 2013

Tourists ask a "tuk tuk" driver for directions along Khao San Road in Bangkok July 13, 2012. — Reuters picLONDON, March 2 — Travel is one of life's great pleasures, so it is little wonder travellers are more interested in researching which sites to see and which restaurants to visit than finding out what scams they have to watch out for.

In a foreign country or city, people let their guard down, relax and often behave in a way they never would back home, leaving them open to highly organized tourist scams.

That's why online travel consultants Cheapflights.com have put together a list of the top 10 travel scams to watch out for around the world. Reuters has not endorsed this list:

1. Fake Police

If, as a traveller, you find yourself being accused of a crime you didn't commit, chances are you're dealing with a counterfeit cop. For example, fake police might charge an over-the-top, on-the-spot fine for putting out a cigarette in public. Always check the officer's ID and contact the real police if you have any doubts.

2. Faux Gems

En route to their official destination, dodgy tuk-tuk or taxi drivers take travellers to stores where they are offered deals that are literally too good to be true. The so-called "Gem Scam" can actually involve any high-priced or desirable item such as leather goods or "authentic" carpets. Victims soon discover their "jewels" may be nothing more than polished glass and those larger items, well, they never make it back home.

3. Distraction

This can be anything from a child waving a newspaper in your face to an old woman needing assistance or a local helping you wipe a mess off your shirt. While you are distracted, a second crook comes in and swipes your stuff. The key to making it out with all your valuables intact is to pay careful attention to your belongings and others around you.

4. Bar Scams

These can take a variety of forms, but the basics involve a traveller, usually male, being approached by local women (sometimes a group of seemingly friendly men) who invite him for a round of drinks at a local bar. After a few beverages the locals are gone and the traveller is left with a ridiculously large bill!

5. Tricky Taxi Drivers

Unfortunately for all the good ones, cab drivers have a bad rep for ripping off travelers, but they do have a lot of tricks associated with their profession. Some of the most common cons are inflating fares or telling passengers their selected hotel/bar/restaurant is closed, but never fear, they know a better one just down the road. Always travel in licensed cabs and, if possible, agree on a fixed fare. Also, insist on going to your original destination and see if it is actually closed for yourself.

6. The Struggling Musician

They can pop up anywhere, but are most often found around New York City's Times Square or on the Las Vegas Strip. CD bullies approach passers-by asking them to check out their music, handing over what appears to be a free copy of their CD. However, once the disc is in your hands, the aspiring superstar (often surrounded by friends) refuses to take it back and expects you to pay for the pleasure of listening to their unsigned gem. Try to ignore these guys, but if one of the 'musicians' does manage to get a CD in your hand and refuses to take it back, gently put it on the ground and walk away.

7. Photo Ops

You've just arrived at an amazing site and are happily snapping away, trying to get that winning shot, when a local in costume or with an intriguing prop shows up and offers to pose for a photo. This person isn't just doing this for a bit of fun. The costumed conman is after your cash. Once the photo has been taken he or she will demand a crazy amount of money from you. Even worse, if the person in costume has a partner who took the picture he might not return your camera until you've paid up big time.

8. Packed Trains

All ideas of personal space are thrown out the window when riding a train crowded with people. You tend to ignore passengers bumping and knocking into you and it's in this environment where you have to pay extra attention to your belongings — was that an accident or someone going for your wallet?

The busy public transport networks of New York, Paris and London are particular hotspots, but light-fingered thieves can be found around the world.

One particular scam is common in certain parts of Italy. Your train pulls into the station so you jump aboard; but there are a few minutes to wait until it is due to depart. In this time, dozens of what seem like passengers squeeze their way into the carriage, but just before the doors close and the train leaves the platform, they jump off taking the valuables of unsuspecting travelers with them.

9. Where Are You From?

When wandering through an exotic marketplace, you know there's going to be haggling in store. However, what you might not know is that store keepers start working out how much to charge you from the moment you open your mouth.

Almost every shop owner will start a conversation with "Where are you from?" and you need to be careful with your answer.

If you say something obvious like England, America or Australia, they will assume you have a lot of money and, as a result, will instantly push up the price of their stock.

The best answer to give is something a little obscure such as the name of your city or suburb. This will throw off the seller and leave you to haggle on a level playing field.

10. Bracelet Scheme

A charming person comes up to you offering directions or sightseeing advice when, suddenly, he or she ties a woven bracelet around your wrist in a double knot then demands payment. If you refuse, the scammer starts yelling that you're stealing the bracelet. Victims are often so shaken by the experience that they end up paying the perpetrator.

Be wary of overly friendly people offering services you neither want nor need and tell them to remove the bracelet before you call the police. — Reuters

Publisher to stop selling second book by Jonah Lehrer

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 10:15 PM PST

March 02, 2013

NEW YORK, March 2 — A second book by US writer Jonah Lehrer, who previously admitted to making up quotes from singer Bob Dylan, is being pulled from sale, its publisher said today.

Lehrer's book How We Decide will no longer be sold after going through a fact checking process, according to publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Published in 2009, the book explores how people's minds make decisions and how those decisions can be improved.

Lehrer's first book, Proust Was a Neuroscientist, will continue to be sold, Lori Glazer, executive director of publicity for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, said in an email.

Lehrer last summer resigned as a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine after admitting he had made up quotes from singer and songwriter Dylan in his book Imagine: How Creativity Works. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt immediately halted shipments of the physical books and e-book sales for Imagine

Lehrer, a science journalist and author, became the latest nonfiction writer to admit making up material, saying in a statement that he had lied to journalist Michael Moynihan of the online publication Tablet, who had questioned Lehrer about the authenticity of quotes in a section devoted to Dylan.

The inquiry by Moynihan followed earlier allegations that Lehrer had repurposed quotes in several New Yorker blogs.

Moynihan reported today, in an article on The Daily Beast, that he had provided Houghton Mifflin Harcourt with some problematic passages from How We Decide

Glazer's statement did not mention Moynihan.

Lehrer's literary agent could not be reached for comment.

Other books that have caused controversy over accuracy in recent years include James Frey's A Million Little Pieces and Herman Rosenblat's canceled 2009 Holocaust memoir, Angel at the Fence: The True Story of a Love That Survived. — Reuters

March 02, 2013

Timbalan Menteri Pelajaran Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi berkata dua sekolah diarah tutup sehingga Isnin ini manakala sembilan lagi ditutup sehingga Rabu depan.

Tiga anggota polis Malaysia turut tercedera.

Hernandez dilaporkan berkata kerajaan Filipina masih lagi perlu mengesahkan kenyataan jurucakap penceroboh berkenaan bahawa 10 anggotanya terbunuh.

Who’s accountable?

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 05:19 PM PST

March 02, 2013

Dr Kamal Amzan is concerned about where the country is heading, and whether the correct diagnoses and treatment will be able to save us all. He believes that politics is both an art and a weapon, which can be deadly in the wrong hands.Follow him on Twitter at @drkamalamzan.

MARCH 2 — If we use the quality of our roads as a yardstick, we can expect the collapse of more buildings and bridges.

One would think that we have learned our lessons from collapsed stadiums in the past but no, we are only getting better at blaming others. If only our leaders are brave enough to commit "sepukku" when something goes wrong, we needn't wait until 2020 to be fully developed.

This time the badly constructed bridge in Cyberjaya collapsed due to "peaty land" around it and structural issues. If that is true, how they got the approval to build in such a peaty area which resulted in the bridge sinking is beyond me.

But one thing is clear though, if the authorities cannot even be counted upon to maintain the safety of our buildings and roads, can we count on them on other matters i.e. the security, education and economic well-being of Malaysians?

I shudder pondering the answer.

Yes, the collapsed bridge was already closed for repairs. Yes, no one was hurt. But expecting us to believe that this is an isolated case is something else altogether. Remember the cracks along MRR2 not too long ago? What about the stadium roof in Terengganu that collapsed more than once?

Peaty land again? Or perhaps this time due to overweight Malaysians?

If you are suffering from selective dementia, may I then suggest you to take a drive down our scenic roads nationwide and let Malaysians know when and if you will close them down for repairs, or if there is peat around the area causing the numerous potholes that have become a gold standard on non-tolled Malaysian roads.

Using taxpayers' money to pay out BR1M is one thing, but using it to pay the salaries of incompetent fools is enough to induce nationwide manic episodes to the detriment of those in Putrajaya.

Malaysians deserve better. Consider yourselves warned.

Getting it right this time?

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 05:05 PM PST

March 02, 2013

MARCH 2 — I think it's fair to say that quite a lot of Malaysians think that local films are a joke, which is a fair assessment, judging from the appalling quality of most of the local films opening in cinemas here.

So if the films are a joke, then it's quite logical that the Festival Filem Malaysia ("FFM"), which is our version of the Oscars (I hate it when I have to do that to explain what FFM is), is a joke too.

Again, I think that it's also quite a fair assessment because if we only have low quality, then we can only give awards to low quality. Like they always say, beggars can't be choosers, right?

This year seems a bit different though. FFM is celebrating its Silver Jubilee (that's 25 years!), and for the first time in quite a long while I found myself getting excited with the list of nominees.

Three films lead the way, with "Songlap" getting 15 nominations (a new record for FFM), followed by critics' darling "Bunohan" with 13 nominations and "29 Februari" with 12 nominations. So let's talk about the major categories and do some predictions, shall we?

Best Film — "Songlap"

Some people will question why "Ombak Rindu" is nominated here, but not me since I've always thought that it's a solid and (mostly) well-made melodrama in the Hindi film tradition.

Young Syafiq Yusof's debut film "SAM" is not perfect, but is still miles ahead of most local films in terms of ambition and visual imagination, so its nomination is also deserved.

In any other year the lovely "29 Februari" would be a favourite, but pity it had to compete with two very noteworthy films this year.

"Bunohan" is surely the overwhelming favourite here since it was also Malaysia's official submission to the recent Academy Awards, but the raw and more accessible "Songlap" might just sneak a march and win it. It's my personal pick, and I have a feeling that whoever's voting will feel the same too.

Best Director — Dain Said ("Bunohan")

Take out "29 Februari" from the list and replace it with Saw Teong Hin for his lively and subtly subversive musical "Hoore! Hoore!", and most of what I said above will still hold true.

But anyone in their right mind and with eyes will see that Dain Said directed the hell out of "Bunohan", and there can only be one choice for a winner here.

It's not every day that a director manages to successfully visualise his characters' internal turmoil, but Dain definitely made that trick his own in "Bunohan" so it will be a crime if he loses.

Best Actor — Pekin Ibrahim ("Bunohan")

"Bunohan" scores big with three nominations in this category for its stars Faizal Hussein, Pekin Ibrahim and Zahiril Adzim, who played the three brothers in the film.

Shaheizy Sam provides another shock when he received two nominations for his performances in "Songlap" and "SAM", but the two nominations will surely split his vote so it's very unlikely that he'll take home the trophy.

The sentimental choice would be Faizal Hussein, but Pekin Ibrahim's un-showy and quietly menacing performance is just too good to ignore.

Best Actress — Sara Ali ("Songlap") vs Maya Karin ("Ombak Rindu")

In any other year I'd say Maya Karin will win it hands down, but this is the very rare year where FFM seems to be actually committed to awarding artistic excellence (as opposed to its usual mainstream-centric ways).

Just a cursory look at the list of nominations this year will present this "them" or "feel" to you. Maya Karin's is a solid enough performance in a crowd-pleasing film, but when it comes to artistic excellence there's no better lead female performance in a local film this year than Sara Ali's expressive and mostly silent performance.

If the FFM voters have balls, Sara Ali would win it hands down. If not, then the conservative choice is without a doubt Maya Karin.

Best Supporting Actor — Omar Abdullah ("Songlap")

Again, "Bunohan" will do battle with "Songlap" with two nominations each in this category and it'll likely be a straight battle between the hugely memorable baddie played by Husyairi Hussain and Omar Abdullah's tortured and incestuous father.

Of the two, Omar Abdullah has the more layered and shaded character, and since he's also a respected veteran I think he's going to pick up the trophy here.

Best Supporting Actress — Normah Damanhuri ("Songlap")

Anyone who's seen "Songlap" will very likely talk about Normah Damanhuri's performance as a prostitute, which I honestly think is a little bit too "acted."

I'd much prefer Lana Nordin's interpretation of a prostitute in Chow Kit, for which she deservedly received a nomination. But again, Normah Damanhuri is a respected veteran in the scene and she is therefore the sentimental favourite to win it. And I think she will.

Best Screenplay — "Songlap"

Script-wise, "Songlap's" direct and literal approach will already look strong in writing as opposed to "Bunohan's" symbolic and allegorical approach, which needs the support of images and won't look as strong just by the strength of words alone.

I've no idea how "Untuk Tiga Hari" got a nomination, and both "29 Februari" and "Seefood" look unlikely to cause an upset, so it's a straight battle between "Songlap" and "Bunohan". My pick would be "Songlap", but I won't be surprised if "Bunohan" wins either.
