Terpstra pips top guns to win Paris-Roubaix

Posted: 13 Apr 2014 08:42 AM PDT

April 13, 2014

Niki Terpstra of the Netherlands seized his opportunity to pip the pre-race favourites and clinch the biggest victory of his career when he won the Paris-Roubaix classic race today.

Terpstra, one of the in-form riders going into the 257-kilometre race featuring 51.1 kilometres of cobbled sectors, attacked a group of favourites with six kilometres left and never looked back.

He crossed the line on the outdoor Roubaix velodrome some 20 seconds ahead of German John Degenkolb.

Swiss Fabian Cancellara, who was bidding to become the first rider to achieve three Paris-Roubaix/Tour of Flanders doubles, came up third after failing to make his move earlier in the race.

Belgian Tom Boonen, Terpstra's team leader at Omega Pharma-Quick Step, was the most aggressive rider of the day but he crossed the line in 10th place and failed to become the only man with five Roubaix titles. – Reuters, April 13, 2014

Liverpool boost title hopes with victory over City

Liverpool won 3-2 against Manchester City. – Reuters pic, April 13, 2014Premier League leaders Liverpool took a huge step towards becoming English champions for the first time in 24 years when they defeated third-placed Manchester City 3-2 at Anfield on today for a tenth successive win.

The Merseyside club have not finished top since 1990, two years before the Premier League began.

Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel put them 2-0 up in 26 minutes before David Silva led a City revival. The Spaniard reduced the deficit and an own goal by Glen Johnson brought an equaliser only five minutes later.

But Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho drove in the winner after a mistake by City's captain Vincent Kompany.

Liverpool's Jordan Henderson was sent off in added time and will miss three of the four remaining games.

Liverpool are now seven points ahead of City, having played two games more, and five ahead of their next visitors Chelsea, who play at Swansea in the later match today.

Their manager Brendan Rodgers hailed "a remarkable performance" and said the team were "incredible today".

It was an emotional day for the club, who commemorated 25 years since the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 of their supporters died at an FA Cup semi-final. There was a minute's silence before kickoff, after which the home fans roared their team into a sixth-minute lead.

Luis Suarez outmuscled his marker Gael Clichy and fed Sterling, the teenager cleverly dummying Kompany and England goalkeeper Joe Hart before scoring.

Twenty minutes later Hart saved well from a header by Liverpool's unmarked captain Steven Gerrard but from the resulting corner Slovak defender Skrtel headed in.

Toure injured

In between, City had lost their influential Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure and not until shortly before halftime did they threaten. Johnson and Sterling had to clear off the line in the same attack and Fernandinho's half-volley was saved by Simon Mignolet.

City, champions two years ago before losing their title to neighbours Manchester United last season, continued to improve after halftime with James Milner then Sergio Aguero coming on.

In the 56th minute Milner set up Silva to score from close range and five minutes afterwards Silva and Samir Nasri worked a neat passing move that ended with Johnson deflecting the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge, a former City player, and Suarez both wanted a penalty in separate incidents but television replays suggested the ever controversial Suarez had dived and, having already been given a yellow card, could have been sent off.

City were beginning to look the more likely winners despite their poor start and Mignolet had to save well from Edin Dzeko before Silva just failed to reach Aguero's inviting cross.

But Liverpool came again. Kompany miskicked a clearance and Coutinho beat Hart with fine low shot from 15 metres.

Henderson's red card came for a lunging tackle on Nasri and his suspension will rule him out of three vital games, including the visit of second-placed Chelsea in two weeks' time.

At the final whistle, Gerrard gathered his team in a huddle in the middle of the pitch as the home supporters celebrated wildly.

Liverpool may still need to beat Chelsea in order to take the title but this thrilling victory has undoubtedly made them favourites. – Reuters, April 13, 2014

‘Captain America’ soars above ‘Rio 2’ to win box office

Posted: 13 Apr 2014 08:57 AM PDT

April 13, 2014

Marvel's red-white-and-blue superhero soared to a second straight box office win in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," beating out new animated movie "Rio 2," the story of a family of Brazilian birds on a trip to the Amazon.

Walt Disney Co's "Captain America," which set an April ticket sales record when it opened a week ago, pulled in another US$41.4 million from Friday to today at American and Canadian theatres.

The "Rio" sequel from 20th Century Fox debuted with US$39 million in ticket sales, according to estimates from tracking firm Rentrak.

Low-budget horror flick "Oculus," a new film from "Paranormal Activity" producer Jason Blum, finished in third place, collecting US$12 million.

"Rio 2," a sequel to a 2011 film, features the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway as parents of a bird family that travels to the Amazon to try to save their endangered brothers and sisters.

"Captain America" stars Chris Evans as a scrawny World War Two reject given superpowers from an experimental serum. The film is a follow up to 2011 hit "Captain America: The First Avenger."

Privately held Relativity Media released "Oculus." – Reuters, April 13, 2014

Muse, Pharrell headline Coachella amid dust storm

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy delivered high-energy performances of the bands hits songs including "Hysteria," "Resistance," and "Magic," but a large portion of the Coachella crowd left the field early as high winds swept sand and dust across the festival field.

Muse performed a catalogue of its hits including "Time is Running Out," and "Starlight," where Bellamy walked through the crowd and climbed onto a platform among the audience during the song.

The band also sang a cover of grunge rock band Nirvana's "Lithium," dedicating it to Nirvana's late lead singer Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide 20 years ago.

Festival goers in the desert town of Indio, California, were alerted by text message of high winds on the field.

Ahead of Muse, R&B singer Pharrell brought uptempo tracks to the festival, kicking his set off with "Lose Yourself To Dance," his collaboration with French electronic music duo Daft Punk.

The singer sang some of his older hits with his group N.E.R.D., such as "Lapdance" and "She Likes To Move" and songs from his new album "GIRL" such as "Marilyn Monroe."

The 41-year-old singer got the crowd dancing with his 2013 hit collaborations, including "Blurred Lines" with Robin Thicke and "Get Lucky," with Daft Punk. Pharrell performed both solo yesterday.

Pharrell brought out some star power for his set, collaborating with rapper Nelly on his 2002 hit "Hot In Herre," Busta Rhymes on the rapper's song "Pass The Courvoisier Part 2," Snoop Dogg for the rapper's songs "Drop it like its Hot," Gwen Stefani for her hit "Hollaback Girl," and DJ Diplo, part of the electronic music collaborative Major Lazer, for "Aerosol Can."

The dust storm caused problems for Pharrell, whose voice started cracking by the end of the set.

"I want you to be patient with my, the dust is messing with my voice right now," he said before leading the crowd into a sing-a-long of his Oscar-nominated song "Happy."

One of the biggest draws of the day was 17-year-old New Zealand newcomer Lorde. The singer has had a stellar year in which she saw her single, "Royals," top charts across the world, and won two Grammy awards. Her style of pop is infused with hiphop beats, making her a dance floor staple.

The annual three-day Coachella music festival, which featured the same line-up over two consecutive weekends, kicks off the summer live music season. – Reuters, April 13, 2014

Gold rush threatens west Africa’s cocoa future

But the drain on the labour market and the harm done to cocoa plantations could endanger cocoa production in the two nations, which account for 60% of global supply. – Reuters pic, April 13, 2014.A month ago, Bouafu Kouassi dug a neat circular hole in the middle of his one-hectare cocoa plantation in western Ivory Coast, and, sifting through the gravel on his shovel, found the unmistakeable traces of gold dust.

With luck, it could transform his life, but it could just destroy his farm. And as the story repeats across the cocoa heartland of the world's top producer and neighbouring Ghana, the second-largest, it could do lasting damage to the industry.

Today, nearly three dozen vertical shafts plunge down into the soil beneath Kouassi's cocoa trees, branching out into a web of underground tunnels 10m below the surface.

The 35-year-old, who once struggled to pay school fees for his five children, has in a matter of weeks pocketed as much as he could hope to earn in five years growing cocoa.

"As long as there's gold here, we'll be working," he says, with the giddy smile of a man who thinks he's won the lottery.

With high prices for the precious metal fuelling a gold rush in Ivory Coast and Ghana, diggers are scurrying to cash in.

But the drain on the labour market and the harm done to plantations could endanger cocoa production in the two nations, which account for 60% of global supply.

Kouassi says he is being careful, and his plantation will survive once the gold is exhausted, probably in just a few months, but a stark reminder of the risks lies just a short walk away.

Down a dirt track lies a scarred landscape of pits and mounds of brown-red dirt. There are no trees left here to block the sun that beats down on diggers balancing sacks of dirt on their heads and women wading waist-deep in muddy pools to wash gravel, their infant children tied to their backs.

After two months, gold output from the site is falling off, and many of the 300 shafts on the 2ha plot have been abandoned as miners move on, leaving desolation in their wake. In some areas, diggers have begun using toxic cyanide and mercury to extract gold from the ore they mine.

Severin Konan, a cocoa farmer who manages the land for his family, is unapologetic.

"You can make 100 million CFA francs (RM700,000). And with that you sort yourself out. You head to the city. You don't need your fields any more."

Prisoners of poverty

In Ivory Coast, where artisanal mining has historically been concentrated in the arid north, diggers are moving into cocoa-growing areas around Issia, Duekoue, Zoukougbeu, Bouafle and Daloa – the latter producing a quarter of national cocoa output.

In Ghana, Africa's second-largest gold producer, Wassa-Akropong in the west and the central region of Dunkwa have been prime targets for miners. Assin Fosu and adjoining districts have also been hit hard.

"It's not just ravaging cocoa crops in those areas but it makes major cocoa districts in the Eastern and Ashanti regions very vulnerable," said Emmanuel Opoku, deputy director of research at Ghana's cocoa marketing board, Cocobod.

"The future of our crop is threatened if this continues."

He said he didn't have figures to quantify the threat, but the regions at risk are in Ghana's top cocoa-producing belt.

Despite its global dominance, the long-term prospects for West Africa's cocoa sector are surprisingly bleak. Plantations are ageing, and so are cocoa farmers.

The average age of growers in Ivory Coast is around 50, just four years shy of the average life expectancy of an Ivorian man.

While the country harvested a record crop of 1.5 million tonnes of cocoa two seasons ago, the government is now expelling farmers from plantations illegally established during a decade-long political crisis that ended in 2011.

Ghana, meanwhile, is phasing out subsidies for fertiliser and pesticide treatments, putting an end to initiatives that many credit for a rapid rise in production over the past decade.

But the most serious threat to the sector's future is poverty. The average cocoa grower in Ivory Coast farms 3ha, yielding 450kg per hectare.

At the government-regulated farmgate price that yields just US$2,000 per year. After labourers are paid and fertiliser purchased, he will be lucky to keep a third of that.

In Ghana, where the government set a farm price on parity with Ivory Coast in October, growers' earnings are being eroded by inflation and the country's plunging cedi currency. At the bottom of the cocoa hierarchy, labourers – usually young men with no land of their own – typically earn just US$500 per season.

With cocoa promising a life of back-breaking toil and grinding rural poverty, many are looking for a way out.

No longer thinking of cocoa

Five years ago, as world spot gold prices began an unprecedented rally to around US$1,900 an ounce in late 2011, poor cocoa farmers woke up to the possibility that salvation lay beneath their feet.

While prices are now back around US$1,300/oz, that is still three times higher than they were a decade ago.

Eight months ago, a local farmer discovered a gold vein near the town of Zahibo, west of Ivory Coast's main cocoa hub of Daloa.

Within weeks, diggers from all over the country and neighbouring Burkina Faso began flooding in by the busload.

Now, often prospecting at night and without the permission of landowners, their open-trench mines rip giant gashes through plantations. The anarchy at the pits, where disputes over stakes have sparked deadly confrontations, recently pushed community leaders to call in the army.

While damage to plantations and insecurity are major worries, Michel Gueya, the head of Zahibo's local cooperative, said the main problem for cocoa farmers was a lack of labour.

"We're no longer even thinking of doing coffee or cocoa," he said. "This year, there's been no production in our zone."

Gueya said every two weeks a buyer from Burkina Faso named Karim arrives in Zahibo and buys its gold production – between 30kg and 35kg – before flying to Italy to offload it.

At a conservative price of 7,000 CFA francs per gramme, that translates into a bi-monthly injection of US$500,000 into a local economy where owning a motorbike once marked you as well off.

Gueya knows all this because, in addition to heading Zahibo's cocoa co-op, he has become its main gold middleman.

At Kouassi's plantation-turned-goldmine, Gervais Alledji, a 35-year-old digger, is waiting to get paid. Under an improvised shelter made of black plastic tarpaulin, an on-site buyer uses a hand scale to weigh a tiny pile of shiny yellow dust.

"Day before yesterday, we had 9g at 99,750 CFA francs and yesterday 7g at 77,500 francs," says Alledji, who works a mine with two partners. "Today, we got 3g."

Standing off to the side, Francois M'Bra, a cocoa farmer and president of a growers' cooperative in the nearby town of Bouafle, shakes his head. All season he's searched in vain for workers to harvest the pods on his plantation and dry the beans.

"This guy just made 30,000 (francs) in a day. If you go and do cocoa, you'll earn 240,000 for a year. Why would you do that?" he says.

"If it continues on this scale, in five years you won't be hearing much about cocoa from this zone." – Reuters, April 13, 2014.

Pilihan raya Indonesia: Pengajaran kepada parti Islam, PAS dan Malaysia

Posted: 12 Apr 2014 03:49 PM PDT

April 13, 2014

– 13 April, 2014.
