Marseille and Arsenal fortune turn on Europe

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 08:13 AM PDT

PARIS, Oct 18 — Olympique Marseille and Arsenal look to put their mediocre domestic form behind them as they gear up for a potentially decisive Champions League clash at the Stade Velodrome tomorrow.

Marseille, the 1993 champions, have won only one Ligue 1 game this season although they lead Champions League Group F with six points from two games, having crushed Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in their previous match.

Deschamps: "Building confidence" . . .

Wenger: "Getting better." — Reuters pics

Arsenal, who have yet to win the Champions League, are second on four points in the group and lie 10th in the Premier League standings having had trouble adjusting after Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas left during the off-season.

Victory would give Marseille a perfect record midway through the group phase. Didier Deschamps's side, however, will need to improve dramatically from their dull Ligue 1 displays if they are to challenge the Londoners.

Marseille, 15th in the French league, drew 0-0 at Toulouse at the weekend and have not won a league match in almost a month.

"I don't want to be too pessimistic (about our situation)," Deschamps said on the club's website (http://www.om.net). "I'm aware of the difficulties we are facing but we are working on that and we are trying to build some confidence."

Arsenal can empathise with their rivals' predicament.

"Marseille is a good team but they are under pressure a little bit like we are in the league because they didn't start as strong as they would have expected," said Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger.

"That puts more pressure on you. They have done well in the Champions League, certainly, because it is a competition where there is a bit less expectation and they are less under pressure."

Renewed optimism

Although Arsenal won 2-1 against Sunderland on Sunday, their performance was far from convincing, and owed a great deal to an outstanding performance from Dutchman Robin van Persie who scored twice — the first time after only 29 seconds, the second from a brilliant free kick — to give Arsenal only their third league win of the season.

The three points moved them up five places in the table, which gave Wenger renewed cause for optimism.

"We have now won five games on the run at home," the Frenchman said.

"I think the attitude and spirit of the team is great. The motivation is there, the quality is there, so slowly we are getting better."

The Gunners' injury problems have deepened, however, with defender Kieran Gibbs and midfielder Aaron Ramsey joining the already lengthy list of absentees.

Ramsey missed Sunday's game with a hamstring injury while Gibbs was replaced by Andre Santos five minutes into the second half after suffering a stomach injury.

Arsenal are already without defenders Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna while Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou have only just returned from injury.

Wenger, back in the dugout after his two-match Champions League suspension against Borussia Dortmund and Olympiakos, told reporters: "Gibbs has an inflammation of his stomach muscles and only has a small chance of playing on Wednesday.

"Ramsey has a small chance of being in the squad. He had fatigue of his hamstring. I wanted to give him a breather — it would have been a gamble to play him."

Marseille are still waiting for striker Andre-Pierre Gignac to find his rhythm after a below-par start to the season because of poor preparation.

"He's been training normally for a week but he has been out for quite some time and he needs time to get back to his best," said assistant coach Guy Stephan.

Teams:

Olympique Marseille: 30-Steve Mandanda; 2-Cesar Azpilicueta, 21-Souleymane Diawara, 3-Nicolas N'koulou, 12-Charles Kabore; 4-Alou Diarra, 8-Lucho Gonzalez, 7-Benoit Cheyrou, 28-Mathieu Valbuena, 20-Andre Ayew; 11-Loic Remy.

Arsenal (possible): 13-Wojciech Szczesny; 25-Carl Jenkinson, 4-Per Mertesacker, 6-Laurent Koscielny, 11-Andre Santos; 8-Mikel Arteta, 17-Alex Song, 7-Tomas Rosicky, 14-Theo Walcott; 10-Robin van Persie, 22-Gervinho. — Reuters

Wales considered faking injury in World Cup semi, admits Gatland

AUCKLAND, Oct 18 — Wales considered faking an injury to a player to force a move to uncontested scrums during their rugby World Cup semi-final against France last weekend, coach Warren Gatland said today.

The Welsh lost starting prop Adam Jones to a calf injury and flanker Sam Warburton to a red card in the first quarter of the Eden Park match, which they lost 9-8 after playing for more than an hour with 14 men.

With replacement prop Paul James already on the pitch, an injury to him or the other prop Gethin Jenkins would have automatically triggered a situation where neither team was allowed to push at the scrum.

That would have a been a considerable advantage to Wales, whose seven-man pack were coming under huge pressure at the scrum and conceded one of three penalties that France's Morgan Parra converted when their front row collapsed.

Still fuming about the red card shown to Warburton for his tackle on France winger Vincent Clerc, Gatland cited the incident as an illustration of why referee Alain Rolland's dismissal of his captain was against the spirit of the game.

"We'd already lost Adam Jones, and we discussed in the box; did we fake an injury to one of our props to go to uncontested scrums?" he told reporters today.

"But morally, I made the decision that was not the right thing to do.

"We could have easily done that in the first 25-30 minutes. But in the spirit of the game, in the spirit of the World Cup semi-final, I didn't think that was the fairest or the right thing to do.

"That's why I honestly believe Alain Rolland made the wrong decision; I think the right decision would have been a yellow card.

"Under the terms of the rules and regulations, he is perfectly entitled to give a red card but every game is different and you've got to take into account the circumstances, situation and the intent.

"In that situation, given the circumstances and his experience, the yellow card was the right decision."

The International Rugby Board (IRB) and referees' chief Paddy O'Brien have offered their full support to Rolland and reiterated their "zero tolerance" policy on spear tackles. — Reuters

Forget ‘Frasier’; meet Kelsey Grammer’s brooding ‘Boss’

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 07:04 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Oct 18 — Kelsey Grammer doesn't want to turn off audiences for his dark new TV drama "Boss" by comparing it to Shakespeare. But he just can't help saying the S word.

Grammer's ruthless, power-hungry Chicago Mayor Tom Kane is an abrupt change of direction from the jaunty "Frasier" persona that gave the actor 20 years of TV comedy success.

Kelsey Grammer: From comedies to Shakespeare-esque tragi-drama. — Reuters pic

So perhaps it's just as well that Grammer is getting audience expectations in order before "Boss" debuts on cable channel Starz on Friday.

"We've borrowed a lot from Shakespeare," Grammer said. "It's not a Shakespeare piece — we don't want to alienate anybody from the show saying, 'oh dear God, we're going to tune into a Shakespeare play'."

But Grammer says "Boss" is a story of betrayals, intrigue, violence, and a man who is threatened with losing his kingdom.

"That's the kind of stuff that is classically Shakespearean or Jacobean," he said, noting that he began his career in theatre, playing tragedies — many of them by Shakespeare.

"This character is as complex and interesting and fun to play and as dark as any I could have imagined. So I am very happy," he said.

Grammer, 56, is still best known for his role as arrogant psychiatrist Dr Frasier Crane on the hit TV comedies "Cheers" and "Frasier" that brought him four Emmys.

But that image will be erased in the opening moments of "Boss", during a lengthy shot where Grammer's character listens silently as a doctor informs him that he has a degenerative brain disorder.

"When people watch the first opening shot, it's going to wipe the slate clean," said Farhad Safinia, the creator of "Boss". "Kelsey's performance in this show is mesmerizing. It is ground-breaking and compelling in a major way."

Secrets and lies

Network chiefs at Starz also are impressed. They have already ordered a second season even before the debut episode, directed by filmmaker Gus Van Sant, premieres on Friday.

Grammer's Kane is the most effective mayor in Chicago's history, but he gets results by questionable ethics, intimidation and backroom deals.

His marriage is one of convenience and his estranged daughter is a religious, former drug addict. Kane swiftly decides that no one must know of the disorder that threatens the power base he has worked so hard to establish.

The "Boss" crystallizes a series of major personal and professional changes that Grammer says were triggered by a serious heart attack in 2008.

The actor with the distinctive smooth voice married for the fourth time in March after an acrimonious divorce that played out on television when his estranged wife Camille appeared as one of the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills".

"Frasier" was followed by two short-lived TV comedy flops — "Hank" and "Back to You" — and he switched gears to go to Broadway in 2010 where he earned a Tony nomination for the musical "La Cage aux Folles".

"My personal life has had an opportunity to, kind of, take a nice little ride along with Tom Kane," Grammer said cryptically. "A lot of that is bound to surface, or at least surface in the viewers' minds as they watch the show."

Grammer says he could not have pulled off his role as Kane immediately after "Frasier" ended in 2004 because the change for viewers would have been too extreme.

But in a 30-year career on stage, film and television, he says he has always enjoyed keeping people guessing.

"Just when the Hollywood community or casting directors or anybody else thinks they have figured you out, you've got to show them something they didn't know about. I think maybe we've done that with 'Boss'." — Reuters

Bordeaux ‘second wines’ offer first-class bargains

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 07:19 AM PDT

PARIS, Oct 18 – If you can't afford a top bottle of Grand Cru from Bordeaux, you might be delighted to learn that most leading chateaux also make less expensive "second wines".

In the quest for quality, Bordeaux vintners such as Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Chateau Latour and many other famous names have become more selective in order to obtain a signature taste and avoid vast differences between various vintages.

Bordeaux wines are blended wines and a vintner composes a vintage by using various grape varieties in changing proportions and increasingly keeps the juice from specific parcels apart up to the mixing stage. There is also a difference in age of the barrels used for ageing. New oak leaves a different imprint on the wine than older wood.

That means that a large part of the "unfinished" wine production does not end up in the main label bottles. Rather than selling all this in bulk to the wine trade, the best of the leftovers is bottled on the grounds with a different label.

Often these so-called second wines mature less well than the first wine and need to be drunk at a younger age. They can also use grapes from younger vines than those destined for the main wine as a result of regular replanting in the vineyard.

Sometimes, the estate may also decide a vintage does not make the cut for a first wine and presents it as a second wine.

Chateau Rauzan-Ségla did not sell a first wine in 1987 and the best juices went to its second wine Ségla. Rauzan-Ségla, a Margaux Grand Cru, celebrates its 350th anniversary this year and marked this with a label designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the 2009 vintage which was bottled this year.

Among the first Chateaux to present a second wine were Château Léoville-Las Cases with Clos du Marquis in 1904 and Château Margaux with Pavillion Rouge in 1908.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild decided a less-than-excellent 1930 production would not be sold under the Chateau Mouton Rothschild flagship name and in 1932 he bottled the wine as Mouton Cadet. Philippe was the youngest brother, called cadet in French.

Demand for Mouton Cadet was so great, however, that in following years the château had to mix with wines from other estates and the label went on to become one of the biggest commercial success stories of Bordeaux. Since 1994 the 'real' second wine is called Le Petit Mouton de Mouton-Rothschild, made from younger vines and with a limited production.

A FRACTION CAN STILL BE A LOT

Of the 60 Grand Cru wines of the 1855 classification, excluding the Sauternes wines, only Chateau Saint-Pierre has no second wine.

This Saint-Julien wine estate is part of Domaines Henri Martin with Chateau Gloria, Chateau Haut-Beychevelle Gloria and Chateau Bel-Air. Henri Martin, a former barrel-maker, bought Saint-Pierre in 1982 when he was 78. He died in 1991.

"We do not make a second wine because of the small size of our vineyard and because the development of Saint-Pierre was a long-term project and we focused entirely on the brand and the main wine, the rest of the harvest we sell in bulk as Saint-Julien," said current owner Jean-Louis Triaud, Henri Martin's son-in-law.

The second wines of the top five Grand Crus have taken flight of their own accord because some investors prefer these assets over other names in Bordeaux.

Chateau Lafite-Rothschild has as a second wine the Carruades de Lafite-Rothschild named after a hillock on the grounds. The 2003 vintage of the Chateau, with a top-rating by Robert Parker, sells for some €2,100 (RM8,996) per bottle. The Carruades of that year fetches a modest €575 by comparison.

Chateau Latour 2003 sells for just under €1,500 and a bottle of Les Forts de Latour of that year is for sale at about €250.

Chateau Beychevelle is a so-called Fourth Growth – out of the five – among the Grand Crus. Now the property of Japanese brewer Suntory and French drinks group Castel, the estate has three wines. Next to the main label there are Amiral de Beychevelle as a second wine, while the Brulières de Beychevelle are made from parcels belonging to the estate but not within the Saint-Julien appellation area.

According to the estate's published history, Beychevelle traces its roots back to Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette (1554-1642), Duc D'Epernon and Great Admiral of France. Hence the name 'Amiral' and the sailing ship on the label.

A Chateau Beychevelle of 2003 sells for €165 and the Amiral costs €25.

Managing director Philippe Blanc said the second wine is "less emblematic" than the first but the estate puts a lot of effort and care into Amiral in order to serve loyal customers.

"In 1982, four per cent of the harvest went into the second wine, now it is 40-45 per cent," he said. – Reuters

Fukushima victims: Homeless, desperate and angry

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 12:08 AM PDT

FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Oct 18 — At last, victims of Japan's nuclear crisis can claim compensation. And they are angry.

They are furious at the red tape they have to wade through just to receive basic help and in despair they still cannot get on with their lives seven months after the huge quake and tsunami triggered the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years.

Shouts fill a room at a temporary housing complex where seven officials, kneeling in their dark suits, face 70 or so tenants who were forced to abandon their homes near the Fukushima nuclear plant after some of its reactors went into meltdown after the March 11 quake struck.

"We don't know who we can trust!" one man yelled in the cramped room where the officials were trying to explain the hugely complex procedures to claim compensation.

"Can we actually go back home? And if not, can you guarantee our livelihoods?"

About 80,000 people were forced to leave their homes by the nuclear crisis.

While the owner of the plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co, has made temporary payments to some victims, it was only last month that it finally began accepting applications for compensation.

But the procedure is so complicated that it seems to just make things worse.

After claimants have read a 160-page instruction manual, they then have to fill in a 60-page form and attach receipts for lodging, transportation and medical costs.

"It's too difficult. I'm going to see how it goes. I don't want to rush and mess up," said Toshiyuki Owada, 65, an evacuee from Namie town, about 20km away from the plant.

Owada is one of many who still has not applied for compensation even though they have lost jobs or businesses and are running out of cash.

Complex and unfair

The complexity of the task is one deterrent.

There is another — the perception that Tepco is not playing fair.

Confidence in the authorities is low. The government is seen as having bungled its early response to the crisis and being secretive about what was really happening.

Tepco is accused of failing to take sufficient safety measures at the Fukushima plant even though it knew the risks and then deliberately underplaying the extent of the accident.

It is also seen as insensitive.

One clause in the original instruction booklet telling victims they would have to agree to waive their right to challenge the compensation amount in order to receive payment provoked a public uproar.

Chastised by the government, the company promised to drop the clause, issued a simplified 4-page instruction booklet and assigned 1,000 employees to Fukushima prefecture to help victims with the process.

"There may be times when the content is difficult to understand or in some cases our employee in charge may not grasp it fully, but we would like to explain and respond as carefully as possible," said Tepco spokesman Naoyuki Matsumoto.

A government panel overseeing the compensation scheme estimates claims are likely to reach ¥3.6 trillion (RM144.15 billion) in the financial year to next March.

Few claimants

But so far just 7,100 individuals have applied to Tepco for compensation out of the 80,000 it send forms to.

And of the 10,000 businesses in the Fukushima area, a mere 300 have submitted claims.

The company expects a total of 300,000 claims from businesses given that the impact of the radiation crisis has been so widespread.

Victims can sue but that is rare.

Junichi Matsumoto, a Tepco official, said the utility faces about 10 lawsuits so far. He declined to disclose details but said some were seeking more than the firm deemed appropriate.

Yuichi Kaido, an attorney and the secretary-general of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, said lawsuits are considered a last resort in conservative rural northeast Japan.

"In the end, many lawsuits could take place," he said.

"But the majority is thinking of first speaking with Tokyo Electric or seeking mediation . "

Sense of resignation

The final compensation depends on whether and when victims will be able to return to homes within a 20-km evacuation zone. That question remains unanswered, breeding a growing sense of resignation among evacuees.

Some said they doubt they will ever be able to go home and suggested their entire towns simply be relocated and many worry about long-term health effects of radiation.

An Asahi newspaper poll showed this month that 43 per cent of evacuees still want to return, down from 62 per cent in June.

For many, what is now on the table — reimbursement for moving and transportation costs associated with evacuating, compensation for damage to health, lost jobs, and psychological suffering — only deepens frustration over what they have lost.

Tokyo Electric said it will pay about ¥100,000 a month for the period to end of August as compensation for psychological trauma. After that, the sum will be halved.

"Evidence that we have lived our lives is completely destroyed and for that, we are told that we will be compensated ¥100,000 for our psychological suffering. That's it?" said 75-year-old restaurant owner Sumiko Toyoguchi, who had to leave her home in Namie.

"What's at the root of our frustration is that we cannot see what our tomorrow will be like." — Reuters

Novelist Lauren Myracle out of award race after error

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 08:32 PM PDT

NEW YORK, Oct 18 — Young adult novelist Lauren Myracle said yesterday she had withdrawn her latest novel "Shine" from the 2011 National Book Awards after being told it had been short-listed by mistake.

Myracle, author of teen best-sellers "ttyl" and ttfn" and other novels about disenfranchised young people, said in a statement she was "over the moon last week after receiving the call telling me that 'Shine' was a finalist for the award."

Myracle said she was later told that "Shine" had been included in error but would remain on the list "based on its merits." The novel is the tale of the hate crime murder of a young gay teen in a small US town.

But on Friday, the National Book Foundation asked her to withdraw, "to preserve the integrity of the award and the judges' work, and I have agreed to do so," she said.

Myracle added that she continued to support the remaining authors on the short-list for the young people's literature prize.

Her publisher at Amulet Books, Susan Van Meter, added; "We strongly encourage the NBF to review their procedures for transmitting award information between the judges and the staff and to authors and the public so that a painful error like this doesn't happen again."

Myracle suggested that NBF make a donation to the Matthew Shepard Foundation "so that something positive might come of this error." Shepard, 21, was attacked and killed in Wyoming in 1998, apparently because he was gay.

The National Book Awards will be presented at a gala ceremony in New York on November 16. — Reuters

Julian Barnes backed for Booker amid literary spat

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 07:46 PM PDT

Man Booker Prize-nominated British author Julian Barnes holds his book 'Arthur and George' in London. — Reuters pic

LONDON, Oct 18 — English author and four-time nominee Julian Barnes, who once dismissed the Man Booker Prize for fiction as "posh bingo", is favoured to win it today with his novel "The Sense of an Ending".

The annual award to a writer in English from the Commonwealth, Ireland or Zimbabwe is a major event in the publishing calendar, significantly boosting publicity and sales for shortlisted and winning works.

It is also an opportunity for Britain's "literati" to air their grievances about writers who have or have not been nominated and question the ability the judging panels to choose the right winner.

That criticism has been unusually loud this year, prompting chair of judges Stella Rimington to hit back at critics who have accused the award of populism and launched a rival award, The Literature Prize.

The board of the new prize, whose spokesman is literary agent Andrew Kidd, said in a statement that the Booker "now prioritises a notion of 'readability' over artistic achievement."

Leo Robson, critic for the New Statesman magazine, recently wrote: "If things continue as they are, it isn't hard to imagine a time when the (Man Booker) prize will be seen as a way not of celebrating novels, just of selling them."

Rimington, a former British spy chief who turned to novel writing, put up a robust defence of this year's judges in a recent newspaper interview.

"As somebody interested in literary criticism, it's pathetic that so-called literary critics are abusing my judges and me," she told the Guardian newspaper.

"They live in such an insular world they can't stand their domain being intruded upon."

"Sour grapes"?

Ion Trewin, administrator of the Man Booker Prize, weighed into the debate yesterday with an article in the Daily Telegraph.

He said that who ever wins the coveted prize at a glitzy dinner in London today, will have passed "the severest of critical tests."

Trewin also brushed off the sniping surrounding this year's award as a minor distraction.

"Do I detect sour grapes in some of those who support the possibility of a new literary prize, said to be a rival to the Man Booker?"

If the winner is Barnes, as bookmakers predict, he may have mixed feelings.

A Man Booker Prize means a cheque for £50,000 (RM245,000), a flurry of media attention and, perhaps most importantly, a major boost in sales.

But he has been critical of the award in the past, likening it to "posh bingo" and berating judges for being "inflated by their brief celebrity".

Before 2011, he was shortlisted in 1984 ("Flaubert's Parrot"), 1998 ("England, England") and 2005 ("Arthur and George").

This year's contender, The Sense of an Ending, is sufficiently short to be described in one review as a "novella", and tells the story of Tony in a meditation on memory and regret.

It is up against Carol Birch for "Jamrach's Menagerie", Canadian authors Patrick deWitt and Esi Edugyan for "The Sisters Brothers" and "Half Blood Blues" respectively, and debut British novelists Stephen Kelman ("Pigeon English") and A.D. Miller ("Snowdrops"). — Reuters

Kes fitnah: Permohonan Hisham batal pembelaan Anwar didengar 27 Okt

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 02:46 AM PDT

Himpunan Sejuta: Pemuda PAS perlu patuh keputusan parti, kata SU Agung

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 01:17 AM PDT

Steady progress for new-look Chelsea

OCT 18 — While the new Premier League season's headlines have been dominated by the growing rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City, with Liverpool's resurgence and Arsenal's decline providing an occasional sub-plot, deposed champions Chelsea have been picking up regular victories and quietly going about their business.

That's right: I just used the words "Chelsea" and "quietly going about their business" in the same sentence. Now that is a development.

For the last few years — ever since Roman Abramovich and his Russian roubles arrived in West London in 2003 — the Blues have been anything but quiet. They have been brash, bold, cocky, outspoken and generally pretty unlikeable.

The tone for all that unpleasantness was largely set by the manager who until now has defined their modern era — Jose Mourinho. The upstart Portuguese maestro brought with him a single-minded devotion to winning and an "us-against-the-world" mentality that was inevitably accompanied by levels of confidence bordering on — and often veering into — arrogance.

Although it's a long time since Mourinho departed these shores — he fell out with Abramovich and left Stamford Bridge by "mutual consent" in late 2007 — his legacy remained in place and, despite the changes undertaken during the reigns of Avram Grant, Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea have continued to be a team built in Mourinho's confrontational and self-satisfied image.

When Andre Villas-Boas was appointed new Chelsea manager in the summer, I feared the worst. Villas-Boas was, after all, widely known as "the new Mourinho" as a reflection of their startlingly similar backgrounds.

Like his compatriot predecessor, Villas-Boas arrived at Stamford Bridge as a relatively young man after no notable playing career, an early leg-up from Bobby Robson, varied assistant managerial roles (under Mourinho at Chelsea and Inter Milan) and a brief but hugely successful spell in charge of Porto. He seemed certain to be a Mourinho clone, bringing more of the same of smugness and arrogance to Stamford Bridge.

(By the way, you may have gathered that I don't really like Jose Mourinho. In fact, it's more accurate if you swap around two of those words: I really don't like Jose Mourinho. Hugely talented coach? Of course? Appealing human being? Urgh.)

Three months into Villas-Boas' reign, and Chelsea are coming along nicely. Saturday's routine 3-1 home victory over Everton kept them within touching distance of the two Manchester clubs at the top of the table, with six wins and a draw from their opening eight Premier League games.

They've also progressed well in the Champions' League, beating Bayer Leverkusen at home and drawing in Spain with Valencia. Most notably, they've done it all without really upsetting anybody (apart from Tottenham over their pursuit of Luka Modric), playing eye-catching football in an attack-minded fashion and largely keeping themselves to themselves.

Of course, there has been the occasional drama: record signing Fernando Torres has earned internal censure for appearing to criticise his teammates in a Spanish media interview; Frank Lampard has been dropped and then recalled amid speculation over his future at the club; John Terry and Ashley Cole have... well, been John Terry and Ashley Cole.

But Villas-Boas has done what he's had to do in a calm, controlled and diplomatic manner, preventing any internal dissent from entering into the public domain, showing maturity and composure in his media interviews and managing to not ruffle any feathers. Rather unlike his supposed mentor, Villas-Boas seems to actually be quite a nice chap, which comes as a significant relief.

It should be pointed out that Chelsea have failed their one big test to date, losing 3-1 at Manchester United last month, and the early indications are the Villas-Boas' new team will struggle to last the pace with the new "big two" of English football.

But Villas-Boas has shown signs that he will be there for the long haul. He appears ready to tackle the challenge of gradually overhauling his squad — Daniel Sturridge and Juan Mata have started more Premier League games so far this season than Nicolas Anelka and Florent Maluoda — and you can sense a growing feeling that Chelsea are already less reliant on Drogba and Lampard than they have been in the past.

The Portuguese manager has a big job on his hands. The nucleus of his team is still far too old and, with access to Abramovich's wallet seemingly more restricted these days, younger players such as David Luiz, Josh McEachran, Oriol Romeu and Romelu Lukaku will need to become regular starters before too long.

That probably suits Villas-Boas just fine. Although they'll help him gain a few short-term results, the new manager won't be able to build long-lasting success around a team containing Terry, Lampard and Drogba.

Their contribution to Chelsea's recent history has been enormous, but they are nearly yesterday's men. They are certainly Mourinho's men, and Villas-Boas has to mould a squad of players who feel loyalty to him rather than to his self-promoting predecessor. It will be a big challenge, but so far, so good. Perhaps the only way for Chelsea to finally break their attachment to the old Mourinho was to appoint the new one.

Sejarah Mat Indera perlu ditulis semula

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 04:35 PM PDT
