Birmingham appoint Chris Hughton to replace McLeish

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 08:38 AM PDT

LONDON, June 22 — Birmingham City have appointed former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton as the man to lead them in the Championship (second division) next season, the club said today.

Birmingham, who announced the appointment on their website, were relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the season.

Manager Alex McLeish quit the Midlands club earlier this month before making a controversial move to take over at City's bitter rivals Aston Villa.

Hughton (picture) was sacked by Newcastle in early December after 14 months in the job.

He led Newcastle back to the Premier League in his first season but was dismissed midway through last season's campaign after the club said they needed someone with more experience to take them forward. — Reuters

LONDON, June 22 — Venus Williams recovered from a shaky start to beat 40-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-7 6-3 8-6 in a thrilling second-round match at Wimbledon today.

"It was tough, she came out and I couldn't get in the game," Williams, who only returned to action recently after months out with an abdominal injury, said in a televised interview.

"She plays so well, every ball hits the baseline. I give her a lot of credit and I'm delighted to come through. I feel like I am playing better than Eastbourne, I'm moving better and I'm not feeling any pain at the moment."

Date-Krumm surged into a 5-1 lead under the Centre Court roof and although American Williams fought back to force a tiebreak, the Japanese won it 8-6 on her fifth set point.

Williams, five-times Wimbledon champion but seeded 23rd this year following injury problems, improved as the match wore on but Date-Krumm refused to lie down.

Williams made the decisive break in the 14th game of the final set, clinching victory in just under three hours when Date-Krumm sent a backhand wide. — Reuters

MUMBAI, June 22— Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is pregnant with her first child, her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan announced on Twitter yesterday.

"I am going to become a grandfather Aishwarya expecting. So happy and thrilled!!!" Bachchan said, confirming the subject of weeks of speculation.

Rai, 37, a former Miss World, has been married to actor Abhishek Bachchan for more than four years and the star couple had been fending off pregnancy rumors in the past year.

Yesterday, Rai's media manager confirmed the pregnancy but did not give more details.

Rai, who often features on "most beautiful" lists, has worked in several Hollywood and Bollywood films but has taken on noticeably fewer projects recently.

She has no films under production but has signed up to filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar's "Heroine," which was announced at the Cannes Film Festival in May. — Reuters

Rowling set to unveil new Harry Potter venture

Rowling's publicist has said the new venture would not involve a new book. — Reuters file pic

LONDON, June 22 — Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling will unveil her latest venture involving the boy wizard tomorrow, ending fevered speculation among fans about what comes next.

Having announced a new website, the British author has kept its contents a closely guarded secret, giving previews to just a handful of the biggest fan sites who have been sworn to silence.

All will be revealed tomorrow, with a countdown clock linked to the website indicating that it will go live at noon London time (1800 Malaysian time).

"The owls are gathering ... Find out why soon" is all the link says.

What many Potter fans would like most would be an eighth novel to follow on from the seventh and "final" instalment "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" published in 2007.

But Rowling's publicist has already made clear that it would not involve a new book.

The seven-novel series has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, and, along with the blockbuster movie franchise, turned Rowling into the world's wealthiest writer.

Other options on the website include a social networking fan site, an online game or the launch of the novels as ebooks.

The announcement comes just a few weeks ahead of the theatrical release on July 15 of the eighth and final Harry Potter film which will be shown in 3D. The seven movies released so far have grossed US$6.4 billion (RM19.4 billion) in ticket sales. — Reuters

Need a nap? Get a hammock, a study suggests

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 03:58 AM PDT

Napping in a hammock: New research suggests gentle rocking can result in a quality siesta. – AFP pic

GENEVA, June 22 – Want better sleep? Consider a hammock. A new Swiss and French study reveals that gentle swaying back and forth while sleeping provides a better, deeper snooze.

Neuroscientists from the University of Geneva rigged up a bed so it would sway gently from side to side every four seconds. A dozen men then took afternoon naps on the bed for 45 minutes while electrodes recorded brain activity. During another nap, they slept on a stationary bed.

The results, published in journal Current Biology on June 21, revealed that subjects on the rocking bed fell asleep faster, around three minutes sooner or 30 to 40 per cent faster than the static bed.

But what's more interesting is that the rocking sleepers slept better, enjoying a deeper, high-quality sleep, said researchers Sophie Schwartz and Michel Mühlethaler in a statement.

Subjects on the rocking bed spent about 30 per cent longer in what's called "N2" sleep, the deepest stage you reach in a nap. Plus the quality of N2 sleep improved too, "as shown by a higher density of brain activity bursts called spindles," noted the researchers. Spindles have been linked with the ability to remember new information.

The researchers added that the research could impact stroke recovery and brain injury treatment, and they are hoping to try the rocking bed on night-time sleepers as a possible cure for insomnia or other sleep ailments.

Meanwhile, here are a few tried-and-true tips to getting a better night's rest from health information website WebMD:

1. Cut caffeine – the effects of caffeine can take as long as eight hours to wear off.

2. Avoid alcohol as a sleep aid – it may initially help you fall asleep, but it can also lead to less-than-restful sleep.

3. Relax before bedtime – create a pre-sleep ritual, such as light stretching or a hot bath, to help you unwind from the day.

4. Exercise – regular exercise, usually in the mornings or afternoons, can help you sleep like a baby.

5. Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and comfortable. – AFP

Fifth Legoland park set for October opening

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 02:30 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, June 22 – The world's largest Legoland will open in Florida this fall, the region's tourism board has confirmed.

Legoland Florida (picture), a 60-hectare park in Florida's Cypress Gardens region officially opens its doors Saturday October 15, Central Florida's Visitor and Convention Bureau confirmed this week.

It will be the largest Legoland n the world and the fifth park, following other openings in Denmark, Germany, the UK and California.

Although many of the attractions remain secret, the park's management has confirmed that it will have more than 50 rides, show and attractions, including roller coasters and race cars described as "pink-knuckle."

According to reports from the region, several of the attractions at the existing Cypress Gardens site, which was previously a theme park, have been remodelled for Legoland, including a flight school ride and the "coastersaurus" which has been slowed to cater for the younger visitors.

There will also be family-focused shows and attractions, along with one of the largest Lego retail stores in the world, a 4D, 700-seater theatre, and a clubhouse where kids can play LEGO Universe, the brand's Massively Multiplayer Online Game.

First opened in 1968, the Legoland concept has proved popular around the world, and a sixth park is scheduled to open in Malaysia in 2012.

According to the Themed Entertainment Association's annual report, released earlier this month, its European parks are among the continent's ten most most popular, with Legoland Windsor welcoming 1.9 million visitors in 2010 and Legoland Billund in Denmark welcoming 1.65 million. – AFP

Belajarlah dari Lee Lam Thye

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 04:45 PM PDT

Amat menggemparkan apabila dia meninggalkan DAP.

Tetapi Lee Lam Thye terus diberi penghormatan.

Killing the teachers, zombifying our children

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 04:41 PM PDT

JUNE 22 — There is only one thing our schools are good for these days: Creating the living dead.

I don't just mean our "national" schools but all our schools. An education these days is not about preparing the next generation for the future, but the business of scoring on standardised tests.

We covet soulless parrots, with the ability to regurgitate whatever information was crammed down their throats along with the insipid "values" our education system attempts to inculcate. Moral Education, for instance, is a stupid subject that exists only to allow students to get one more A.

When I was part of the Barisan Nasional Youth Lab (yes, taxpayers, I apologise for wasting your money), I remember one member spouting that what our kids needed were guides on "how to study."

Essentially, his idea of education was teaching children the best way to study to get the highest marks. The amazing thing was how the other lab members shot him down, some with biting, cutting remarks. The poor bloke never came back to another lab session.

But who can blame him? Achievement is based on testing, scoring, exams. I wait for the day that students' worth is not measured by how many A's they can score but for their unique talents. That day will not come too soon for our overburdened teachers trapped in a system that makes it challenging to do what they're supposed to do — teach.

Teachers I know have a snarky alternative meaning for our national curriculum, KBSM. They say it stands for Kerja Berat Sampai Mati (work hard, until death). Look at the workloads teachers have to cope with and you would probably agree with them.

Teaching, like journalism, is not a profession for those who want to get rich. It is hard work, made complicated by bureaucracy and whoever is heading the Education Ministry.

It is no secret that the education portfolio is a coveted one, for it gives its bearer the power to drive high-visibility initiatives that in the end, seem to benefit no one.

How can you expect teachers to concentrate on the business of educating their charges when they have countless reports to hand in on various useless minutiae? Let the administrators administrate, and the teachers get on with the business of moulding young minds.

A friend of mine recently joined the Teach for Malaysia initiative; her eyes go all starry-eyed when she talks about how fresh, unspoiled graduates will go in and change the lives of deserving underprivileged children.

She got quite upset by the reception and cynicism she met from teachers who told her that it was a waste of time trying to teach the children of hawkers or of particular races. That these children would not, no, could not amount to anything.

She says these jaded teachers give up too soon. That if they know their charges aren't being fed enough, they should be doing more for the children, meeting up with the parents personally and actively make a difference. The Teach for Malaysia teachers will do all that and more, hunting for sponsors for underfed children if they must.

I hate to sound like a spoilsport but she highlights one problem with our society — we ask far too much of our teachers and give little in return. For too little pay for too much work, teachers are supposed to be godparents as well?

I'm not saying there aren't bad teachers. Plenty of teachers neglect their charges at school, prioritising those monied enough to pay them for after school tuition.

There are the lazy ones who became teachers because they wanted an "easy" job or could not secure another profession. These individuals should be culled from the teaching body and told they are not welcome.

As the saying goes, it takes a whole village to raise a child. Therefore it takes a nation to raise all our children. We shouldn't be vilifying our teachers and pointing the blame in their direction.

The system has failed them. We who have done nothing, said nothing, sent our children to private schools... we have failed the teachers and by doing so, failed our children.

Too many of us suffer from an insidious selfishness. Why care about other children besides our own getting an education? But it is our duty as citizens to care.

Politicians, for all their big speeches, cannot be depended on to push educational reform with a political agenda. Parents on the other hand, will do it because they are parents. They know better than most that bringing up a child shouldn't be graded with a KPI.

It is time for parents to step up to the plate at schools, support those tasked as temporary guardians. One school might not change the system but all the schools together, demanding educational reform? We just might get somewhere.

"Shazryl ... dia nampak macam Umno punya orang... membantu kepimpinan Umno.
