Starbucks opens pop-up shop in Japan

TOKYO, Sept 18 — Starbucks has opened its first ever pop-up store in Tokyo this month in a bid to stand out against competition.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the temporary outpost in the city's trendy Omotesando district is the first of its kind for the chain, and is designed to encourage customers to take their time and sip on their espresso in a bright, airy space.

Set up as a library café, customers place their order at Starbucks Espresso Journey by pulling a pseudo-book from the shelf that bears the coffee of their choice and presenting it to the barista. The book cover is for the customer to keep as a souvenir.

Conceived by Toronto-born Japanese designer Oki Sato, who has worked with luxury brands like Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Veuve Clicquot in France among others, the minimalist shop occupies an event rental space and serves nine espresso-based drinks, like lattes and cappuccinos.

The store is also stocked with limited edition tote bags and mugs and offers latte-pulling classes for wanna-be baristas.

The pop-up concept is the chain's latest attempt to maintain their competitive edge in the clash of the coffee wars in Japan, points out the WSJ's Japan Real Time.

While Starbucks has about 1,000 locations across Japan, domestic chains like Caffe Veloce and Doutor Coffee are also popular brands.

McDonald's McCafés also offer stiff competition for the premium coffee chain, with their significantly lower price points.

When an ice treat goes haute

The Potong popsicle stick. — Pictures by The Potong and Kenny Mah

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — Arranged in neat rows, these brown-paper-wrapped cylinders have the look of sticks of dynamite waiting for detonation. Little did we know these "dynamite" popsicles will indeed explode all over our taste buds.

My friend tries the Rosy Mango (grapefruit and mango with a hint of rose water), while I go for the Nutty Choc (a coconut-based fudgesicle with cocoa and Nutella).

Both are delicious and refreshing (as popsicles eaten in our sweltering weather ought to be) but also delightful in their unexpected and exciting pairing of flavours.

These are but two treats by The Potting – handmade and preservatives-free popsicles using only fresh and seasonal natural ingredients with a contemporary take on the flavours. Gourmet pops, anyone?

The Potong team (from left) Victor Tee, Tee Reei Toh and Ivan Lee.

Ice cream artists

Who are the people behind this fledgling enterprise? Instead of time-worn F&B industry veterans, The Potong is the brain child of Ivan Lee (a HR consultant), Victor Tee (an investment banker) and Tee Reei Toh (an interactive designer).

The journey to becoming home-grown ice cream artists started many years ago when Ivan first met Victor while studying in Melbourne, Australia.

The former was an apprentice chef, having worked in restaurants and catering, while the latter had recently graduated from Food Technology.

Rows of 'potongs' on display, just pick a flavour.

Ivan recalls, "Our big dreams of venturing into the F&B business were put on hold when we both returned to Malaysia to start our corporate jobs.

"Then we met Tee Reei and something just clicked.

"While I'm more of a wannabe chef and Victor is our resident food scientist, Tee Reei brought her foodie passion to the table."

Laughing, Tee Reei agrees, "I guess I'm a 'New Age' Malaysian woman who may not know how to differentiate between a blender or a food processor but I'm definitely a long-time food lover."

During one of their many food trips around Malaysia, they came across the traditional "potong" ice cream that is sadly becoming a rare sight these days. Tasting this perfect treat for a sunny day, they were inspired to create their own version of it, albeit with a twist.

Victor describes a "potong" popsicle as cool like ordinary ice cream but lighter due to its lower cream proportions.

"When we started mixing different ingredients together to update this classic dessert, we decided we wanted the flavours to be fruitier.

"We also wanted to incorporate common flavours of the Malaysian palate that is not normally found in potong ice cream like teh tarik and gula Melaka."

Making the cut

Given both Ivan and Victor's formal training in food, they already had some experience working with food preparation in a commercial sense.

To further strengthen this foundation, they also studied gelato/sorbet-making recently at the Carpigiani Gelato University and adopted some of the principles in their popsicle production.

"It's not hard to make a popsicle. It could be as simple as freezing any liquid in a mould," explained Ivan.

"However, to make an artisanal popsicle, it takes a little more finesse to come up with the perfect texture and density.

"We had to dig up our old food preparation books to study the techniques as well as experimenting a lot to create our final product."

Does this mean their "potong" ice cream is considered a gourmet food though?

"I don't think the average Malaysian would classify a popsicle as gourmet," Tee Reei explains their approach.

Satisfied customers on a hot, sunny day.

"Our goal is to help change consumers' perception that gourmet could be any food product that has high quality produce, accurate preparation and artistic presentation."

They demonstrate this by creating artisanal popsicles that have a higher content of fresh fruits (an average of 60- 70 per cent fruit content) compared to the conventional options which are made mainly from fruit juice concentrates or artificial additives like flavouring, colouring and preservatives.

"As a result, our popsicles have a good proportion of flavours from different fruits, herbs, local ingredients and even spices," said Victor.

"We use whole fruits – the juice, rind and pulp – to create denser, creamier and richer flavours. Even in our warm weather, our 'potongs' do not melt away too quickly."

Making ice cream fun again

One of the things that The Potong has brought to the local ice cream scene is a joyous sense of fun.

The infamous Licking Booth.

At a circus-themed party they catered for, they unveiled an unusual "Licking Booth" (fashioned after the traditional kissing booths at charity fairs) which proved very popular.

Their witty slogan – "Why kiss us when you can lick our Pops instead?" – drew many curious bystanders. What an inventive way to convert them into customers!

And flocking to grab these popsicles they certainly have been. In addition to the flavours mentioned earlier, other favourites include Strawberry Pepper in which fresh strawberry puree is paired with a light but unexpected hint of spice while watermelon is mixed with lemonade and fresh mint to produce the refreshing Waterlemon Fizz.

Another intriguing bestseller is their Teh Tarik; they use Earl Grey tea to give the classic Malaysian beverage a delicate citrus-flavoured twist.

Currently those eager to have a pop or two of The Potong's cool offerings may head to The Food Foundry (Section 17, PJ) and Wondermama (Bangsar Village 1) restaurants.

The Potong team often operate kiosks and stalls at various food bazaars, art shows, music festivals and fundraising events.

One such event will be the latest "Food Bites" food market at Jaya One on Sept 29 (11am – 6pm).

The Potong team promises to have a new seasonal flavour created especially for the market so head to their Licking Booth and lick away!

The Potong

Available at The Food Foundry (BG-8, Happy Mansion, Jalan 17/13, Petaling Jaya) and Wondermama (G6, Ground Floor, Bangsar Village 1, No 1, Jalan Telawi Satu, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur). Website: http://www.facebook.com/ThePotong/

* Kenny remembers the good ol' days when the "ais krim potong" seller would come by on his bicycle, ringing merrily away. Read more at http://lifeforbeginners.com

LONDON, Sept 17 — Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will miss Arsenal's opening Champions League Group B tie at Montpellier tomorrow because of an ankle injury.

The Polish international is to be replaced by Italian Vito Mannone against the Ligue 1 champions, the Premier League club said on their website today.

Manager Arsene Wenger said Szczesny was still his first choice despite his making a handling error that led to a goal in Saturday's 6-1 thrashing of Southampton in the Premier League.

"Wojciech is number one unless I change my mind," said Frenchman Wenger.

"You cannot change a goalkeeper every time he makes a simple mistake because then you have three bad keepers. The confidence is needed." — Reuters

Man City playmaker Silva signs new five-year deal

MANCHESTER, Sept 17 — World Cup and twice European Championship winner David Silva has signed a new five-year contract with Premier League champions Manchester City, the club said today.

The Spain playmaker, who signed from Valencia in July 2010, said City's ambition was behind his decision to agree the deal.

"The team is growing and we are now aiming at the Champions League and so that also is another reason to want to stay here and try and win it," he said on the club's website.

City begin their second tilt at glory in Europe's top club competition when they face nine-times champions Real Madrid at the Bernabeu tomorrow.

"I feel very comfortable here and I want to try and win trophies like those," added the 26-year-old Silva, a vital cog in Spain's Euro 2008 and 2012 victories and the 2010 World Cup triumph.

"These last two years have gone very well so let's hope the next five go as well or even better," said Silva. "The fans have always given me their support since I arrived here and recently they've been wanting me to sign.

"Hopefully this goes some way to thanking them for the affection they've shown towards me, something which also helped me decide to put pen to paper. Being here really does feel just like home for me," added Silva.

Teammates Joe Hart and captain Vincent Kompany have also pledged their long-term future to City, the England goalkeeper agreeing a five-year extension to his contract in August 2011 while the Belgian defender signed a six-year deal in July. — Reuters

Frail but feisty Masur opens Baltic music festival

Despite his old age and recent injury, German conductor Kurt Masur, 85, gave an energetic show as he opened the Usedom Musci Festival in Germany. — Reuters pic

PEENEMUENDE (Germany), Sept 17 — German conductor Kurt Masur, 85, frail but feisty as he opened the Usedom Music Festival in Germany by leading the Baltic Youth Philharmonic in Shostakovich's First Symphony, attributed his recovery after a severe fall partly to the power of music.

Masur injured his shoulder when he fell off a stage in Paris in April. He had to be helped to the podium on Saturday night for the opening concert in the vast turbine hall of a former power station that served the Nazi rocket programme on the Baltic Sea island during World War Two.

Summoning up some of the vigour that made him a leading dissident as a young man in then-communist East Germany, Masur — startling the packed first-night crowd — in mid-concert shouted out "one" to the orchestra, to get the players back on beat.

In keeping with the history of the locale, Masur also made certain all of the piece's dark details, especially a kettle-drum roll that sounds like artillery fire, and which he forced the percussionist to perform a half dozen times in rehearsal, came through in the energetic playing of the youthful ensemble.

"If you love music and you like to listen to music you can be helped by music but if you have nothing of that you have a problem," Masur told Reuters before the concert, when asked how he found the energy to carry on.

The festival, in its 19th season, brings a high level of music-making to the island, a popular tourist destination during the summer months. This year's festival, which runs until Oct 7, explores relationships between German and Russian music and also featured master classes with Masur for seven young conductors.

"He really imparts knowledge no one else could give us," Gemma New, 25, of Wellington, New Zealand, the only woman conductor among the seven, said.

Masur, who lived much of his life in communist East Germany and helped to mitigate violence during its turbulent collapse before going on to a distinguished career in the West as music director of the New York Philharmonic, and later as principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, said not everything had changed for the better with communism's demise.

"I get a cultural shock because then I only feel that nobody of you really understands what it meant in a socialist country," he said when asked about the aftermath of the end of communism. "In East Germany everybody had work and money, not very rich but fine, good enough. And I think we have to face the fact that not everybody who's free is happy."

As for why, at his age and in frail health, he keeps up a strenuous conducting schedule, leading the youth orchestra and holding master classes for younger conductors, Masur said he feels it is part of his calling to help the next generation.

"I don't like them to be hopeless and lost because normally they get a good education, then they get out and they get no position or they are just suffering to get a position in a good orchestra and then what should they do? They try to get money in any way and and then for me the problem is how will the future look?"

Hugely appreciative

The musicians, but especially the young conductors, were hugely appreciative of his efforts.

Kah Chun Wong, 25, of Singapore, said Masur had instilled in him "a religious passion for music", and he was moved by his "relentless energy to deliver what the composer wants, even when he's 85".

Johannes Zurl, 32, of Germany, said Masur had impressed upon him "the simplicity of conducting".

"Sure, he's an older guy and he's not jumping around, but I am extremely inspired to make an effort to bring out more with less," he said.

The young conductors took turns leading sections of the opening piece, Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", and were enthusiastically applauded for their round-robin effort.

Of course, with an orchestra of more than 90 young people, there was more on the agenda than just making music.

"The main thing for me is the people that you meet," said Jason Denner, 27, a San Diego clarinetist now based in Berlin.

"It's in one sense the connections for work, but also you meet some really pretty cool musicians. For a long time this orchestra has attracted the type of person who is willing to take a lot of risks and wants to do things a little bit differently and doesn't necessarily want to be first chair in the Berlin Philharmonic."

Festival director Thomas Hummel said the event has been growing in importance year by year and now had visitors from as far away as the United States, though most of the audience comes from Germany, Poland, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

"Not many islands have a festival like this," he said.

Having Masur conduct was a draw, but it had its downside, at least for those sitting in the back rows of the orchestra, which was founded in 2008 by the festival and Baltic gas pipeline company Nord Stream AG.

"For me he gives us the impulses but not much more," bass trombonist Ingrid Utne, of Stavanger, Norway, said. "I think there would be more in it for me if I could hear what he's saying all the time." — Reuters

Washington’s National Zoo giant panda gives birth

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 08:24 AM PDT

WASHINGTON, Sept 17 – A giant panda at Washington's National Zoo has given birth to a cub, the zoo said today, ending the zoo's seven-year spell without panda offspring.

The panda, Mei Xiang (picture), gave birth late yesterday at the zoo's panda complex, the zoo said in a statement. She was artificially inseminated in April using thawed frozen sperm from the zoo's other giant panda, Tian Tian, after he failed to impregnate her.

Chief veterinarian Suzan Murray said that despite looking tired, Mei Xiang was sitting up and cuddling the cub more closely whenever it cried out.

"She is the poster child for a perfect panda mom," Murray said in a statement.

The two giant pandas are on loan from China, where as few as 1,600 of the black and white bears live in the wild, and are among Washington's top attractions. Although they have delighted crowds of visitors to their complex, they have produced only two cubs in their 11 years in Washington.

The pair's last cub, Tai Shan, was born in 2005 and lives in China, where pandas are an endangered species.

Don Moore, the zoo's associate director of animal care, told Washington's WTOP radio that the four-ounce (112-gram) cub would fit in the palm of a hand and could barely be glimpsed as the 250-pound (113-kg) Mei Xiang cuddled it.

The zoo is giving Mei Xiang complete seclusion and will monitor her and the cub via closed-circuit camera about two weeks, Moore said.

The cub may be ready for a live appearance in a couple of months, he said. – Reuters

Private banks work wonders to lure the super-rich

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 07:29 AM PDT

A Barclays bank branch in Central London is seen in this file photo. Attracting the business of wealthy clients, worth an estimated US$42 trillion globally, is critical for banks not only seeking to maintain their margins, but also diversify their funding base and reduce their reliance on capital markets. – Reuters pic

LONDON, Sept 17 – What do you get the client who has everything? An evening at a sleep school to get tips on how to beat insomnia? A chance to play cricket with former England star Andrew Flintoff? Advice on finding the right school?

These are just some of the services offered by Barclays in its "Little Book of Wonders," underscoring the lengths to which the bank is prepared to go to win the custom of the super-wealthy at a time when its traditional businesses are struggling with weak economies and tougher regulators.

"There is more to wealth than managing one's assets ...this is a complement to the financial advice we give clients and a recognition of the world in which our clients exist," David Hughes, Head of Affinity Partnerships at Barclays, which oversees the Little Book of Wonders.

Attracting the business of wealthy clients, worth an estimated US$42 trillion (RM127.92 trillion) globally, is critical for banks not only seeking to maintain their margins, but also diversify their funding base and reduce their reliance on capital markets.

"Private banking, given the relatively lower capital requirements and the fee based nature of revenue is an area of growth and competition which is expected to increase," Jill Zucker, a partner at McKinsey's said.

Private clients pay on average 1 per cent of assets under management in fees to their wealth managers, estimates specialist wealth management consultant Scorpio Partnership.

Banks are keen to attract their fees as profits remain squeezed in other parts of the business, from high street lending to commercial and investment banking.

For example, Barclays reported a 38 per cent rise in adjusted pre-tax profit in its wealth and investment management division in the first 6 months of the year compared with a 15 per cent rise in its retail and banking business and 11 per cent rise in corporate and investment banking.

Coutts, the 300-year old British bank which counts the Queen among its clientele, is beefing up its non-financial services to hold onto elite customers.

Ian Ewart, head of product, services & marketing said the bank still loved to whisk away clients on horseracing jaunts and to host a welter of key events in the social calendar of the glitterati - including the Cowes Quarter Ton sailing regatta and annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards bash.

But as entrepreneur clients start to outnumber heirs and heiresses, Coutts is spending more time, effort and money satisfying a thirst for intellectual "entertainment" and high-level networking in a business world where success increasingly depends as much on 'who you know' as well as 'what you know'.

A new thought leadership series called Futurescope has been designed to help the bank's entrepreneurial customers analyse future macroeconomic issues and identify moneymaking opportunities in this decade and the next.

"Our clients can buy whatever they want for the most part, what they cannot buy – which is also what they really need – is to connect with people like them, to hear new ideas, the experience is far important than a luxury freebie," he said.

TALE OF TWO MILLIONAIRES

But in innovating the breadth and depth of services offered, private banks will have to make sure the extra spend is worth their while as profit margins in wealth management buckle under the increasing cost of regulation, compliance and technology.

The global wealth management industry is now paying US$8 to generate every US$10 of income, calculates Scorpio Partnership in its closely watched annual health check of the global private banking sector in July.

"The question of how you can continue to cater for clients that might be less profitable for you in the future is a difficult one," Coutts' Ewart said.

In the case of Little Book of Wonders, Barclays declined to disclose the cost of building and maintaining the online portal, saying it was part of its overall investment in its wealth management platform.

In an attempt to mitigate the costs of the service the bank has offered the luxury brands the opportunity to advertise, for a fee, on its Little Book of Wonders portal.

Banks will also pitch services such as Futurescope or Little Book of Wonders to a select set of clients depending on their wealth and how they've made their money rather than blanket invites, to preserve the exclusivity of the offers.

But as clients question the fees they pay, especially in an environment where investments assets are delivering lacklustre returns due to ongoing economic uncertainty, additional services not seen as essential to business needs might raise eyebrows.

"If there are fancy chandeliers and teacups, some clients might assume they are paying too much in fees," said Zucker.

Such services are often tailored to the ultra high net worth individuals, with assets greater than US$25 million, who are not only costing the banks more but are also not necessarily the most profitable.

So-called 'Core Millionaires', with assets of between US$1 million and US$10 million, generate investment revenue margins, on average two to three times higher than their wealthier counterparts, making greater use of more profitable banking and lending products, a survey by McKinsey estimates.

These Core Millionaires are also projected to generate 60 per cent of asset growth amongst all households with more than US$1 million in assets by 2015.

"They're a bit of a lost set of clients," said Zucker. "Banks need to tailor their offering so there is growth in different market segments."

So, where does this leave the 'Little Book of Wonders'?

A junior member of one of Britain's most successful entrepreneurial families, whose mother recently switched private banking allegiance, was sceptical that affluent individuals would be tempted to change banks based on free offers.

"Would clients be impressed by that? No way," the source said. "They just want to make sure that their banking is done. That their transfers happen, that they can speak to someone when they need to," he said. – Reuters

Panduan yang menyesatkan

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 05:06 PM PDT

Umno bertindak siapa sabotaj parti PRU 13

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 04:55 PM PDT

This content is not available in your country due to a legal complaint.
