Vodka made from cow’s milk makes international debut

Set to hit liquor store shelves across the US this winter, Milk Money Vodka is twice distilled from milk and twice filtered for an end product described as a "full-bodied light cream taste".

At 40% alcohol by volume or ABV, the liquor is said to end with a "sweet clean finish" and is gluten-free.

Interestingly, the product's target market is females within the agricultural community ages 21 to 45, says Leche Spirits.

The product will debut in New Mexico and Colorado in the next few weeks, followed by other Midwestern states including Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota.

Meanwhile, it's not the first time farmers have tried to turn cow's milk into vodka. When Black Cow Vodka was launched out of Dorset, England last year, the spirit was touted as a world first. Made from the whey of cow's milk, the premium vodka is sold at high-end UK retailer Selfridges.

Meanwhile, instead of the traditional potatoes or grains, Ciroc vodka – peddled by rapper Diddy – is made from French grapes.

A 750-ml bottle of Milk Money Vodka retails for $19.99 (RM65.89). - AFP/Relaxnews, January 16, 2014.

Fine dining chef sparks debate about banning kids in restaurants

Should babies be banned in fine dining restaurants? - AFP/Relaxnews pic, January 16, 2014.Should babies be banned in fine dining restaurants? - AFP/Relaxnews pic, January 16, 2014.The US food world is in a tizzy after a Michelin-starred chef took to Twitter to complain about a crying baby in his restaurant over the weekend, sparking a larger debate about banning babies in fine dining establishments.

The tweet that launched the online dialogue dubbed "Babygate" by pundits came from Chicago chef Grant Achatz, when he wrote: "Tbl brings 8mo.Old. It cries. Diners mad. Tell ppl no kids? Subject diners 2crying? Ppl take infants 2 plays? Concerts? Hate saying no, but.."

According to a report by Good Morning America, the couple was forced to bring their baby to his high-end, triple-Michelin-starred restaurant Alinea Saturday when their sitter cancelled at the last minute.

But what do you do when you've already paid up to $265 (RM873.44) a person? In this case, the couple decided to bring their eight-month-old infant to one of the most expensive restaurants in the US, where, invariably, the baby broke out into fits of restless crying that could be heard all the way in the kitchen – a famously hushed and hallowed space at Alinea.

The debate has divided the Twittersphere into several different camps: those who side with Achatz; those who sympathize with parents; and those who complain about the complaining.

Some of the most vocal Achatz supporters? Parents.

"Speaking as a mom and a restaurant owner I would never take an 8mo old to a restaurant like Alinea," tweeted Sally Rich.

Another Twitter user and mother of four adds, "I would want to experience all of Alinea without having to deal with my own child, I feel for others!"

Dina Yuen also notes that becoming a parent comes with a set of redrawn boundaries.

"The real issue is too many new parents refuse to make sacrifices. You can't always go to the same places when you have a baby."

But not everyone agrees.

"We brought our infant to every fine dining restaurant around the world we went to. Never had a problem. Babies sleep hrs on end," wrote a Twitter mom.

For his part, in an interview with Good Morning America, Achatz – also a parent – said he's not against exposing children to the restaurant experience.

"We want people to come and enjoy and experience Alinea for what it is but we also have to be cognizant of the other 80 people that come in to experience Alinea that night."

Meanwhile, the controversy also drew criticism from a different camp altogether, who derided the mere existence of the debate.

"lol hilariously bourgeois debate on screaming infants and fine dining search alinea+baby right now," tweeted Chicago-based freelance journalist Matt Kiefer.

Added another: "I understand why this is a big deal to my foodie friends, it's their life, but for the 99% not so much."

And of course, not long after the controversy erupted, the Twitterverse birthed an avatar called @Alineababy which garnered about 925 followers four days after the story broke.

One of its followers? @Gachatz. - AFP/Relaxnews, January 16, 2014.

Chong Wei, Goh V Shem-Khim Wah advance to quarter-finals in Malaysian Open

January 16, 2014

Malaysian badminton men's singles superstar Datuk Lee Chong Wei (pic) and men's doubles pair of Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open Super Series badminton championship.

In the second round matches at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil today, Chong Wei brushed off Wang Zheming of China in straight sets of 21-17 and 21-18 in 42 minutes.

The world number one said he must work extra hard to overcome the Chinese players in order to win his 10th singles title in the tournament.

"I am taking one match at a time... and as usual it is the Chinese players who stand in the way. Most likely I will meet Chen Long in the final but I am not thinking too much about this," he told reporters after the match.

Chong Wei had lost to Chen Long in the final of the South Korean Open last week. It was his first major tournament this year. The Malaysian Open is his second; as such, he is expected to win it before home fans.

Credit must be given to V Shem and Khim Wah who gave a sterling performance in overcoming Thai pair Maneepong Jongjit/Nipitphon Puangpuapech in straight sets of 21-19 and 25-23 to make the quarterfinals.

"I do not want to think about who we will be meeting after this, it is more important that we believe that we can succeed," Khim Wah said.

Chong Wei will be meeting either Du Pengyu or Yuekun Chen, both from China, in the quarterfinals tomorrow while V Shem/Khim Wah will have to contend with either Germany's pair of Michael Fuchs/Johannes Schoettler or Chris Langridge/Peter Mills of England.

However, Malaysia's top mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying were knocked out by Indonesian pair Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto in 21-18, 17-21, 22-24.

Suffering the same fate were compatriots Ong Jian Guo/Lim Yin Loo who lost to seventh seeded Thai pair Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthokam in 19-21, 21-14, 17-21.

Meanwhile, in the women's doubles, Malaysian pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Soong Fie Cho (MAS) lost to Indoneisan pair Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth/Rizki Amelia Pradipta in 18-21, 9- 21. - Bernama, January 16, 2014.

The fifth-seeded Argentine had shown signs that he might be returning to his best form with victory in the warm-up tournament in Sydney but succumbed in a three-hour 53-minute thriller on court two.

The extreme heat kept the former US Open champion and his 62nd-ranked opponent off court until 9.25pm local time and they treated the crowd to an exciting match in which they combined for 100 unforced errors and 125 winners.

Bautista went for his shots to win the latter count 72-53 and took his place in the third round at a grand slam tournament for the first time when the exhausted world number five netted. - Reuters, January 16, 2014.

Zacharevic’s solo show all about turning rubbish into art

They are new art pieces by none other than Ernest Zacharevic, whose first solo art exhibition called "Rubbish/Rubbish is Art" opens at the Old Hin Bus Depot on Jalan Gurdwara, George Town, tomorrow.

The 27-year-old Lithuanian artist, who is a household name in Penang, is best known for his children-themed murals around George Town, has again demonstrated that beauty and art can be found anywhere.

Zacharevic takes "one man's rubbish is another man's treasure" to mean recycling paint buckets and oil drums, turning them into stools and tables.

He is also holding his maiden art show in an old bus company – a 20,000 sq ft property in the city centre. The 1947 building has been in a dilapidated state for years.

Now, the abandoned building is alive again, housing 23 pieces of Zacharevic's latest artworks, including mounted paintings of people and installation art pieces.

The external walls of the building have been turned into canvas and now spot several murals, such as shirtless boys with orange cones on their heads and two kids on a sampan.

Zacharevic is also showcasing two human-sized Lego figures of his infamous knife-wielding Lego mugger and Lego woman with a Chanel bag.

The Lego mugger and 'victim'. The Lego mugger and 'victim'.

The two are replicas of his crime-themed Lego mural in Johor, which was whitewashed by the Johor Baru City Council last November.

The artist, who has made Penang his base since arriving in the state three years ago, said he drew inspiration for his art from the people, heritage, history and culture of the island.

He is drawn to the textures, old walls and pre-war shophouses.

Going with the "rubbish" theme of his show, he said the idea was to use recyclable items and redesign and restructure them into art pieces.

"This is to get people to be more aware of their surroundings and think for themselves what is art and what is rubbish," he said today at a press conference with Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Some of Zacharevic's pieces are for sale.

There are also pieces that he will move to other locations for displays and exhibitions.

As for his murals, the artist, who has had his work whitewashed and vandalised numerous times before, is a pragmatist.

"More artists should be welcomed to use the Old Hin Bus Depot building for their art and I have no problem if they paint their work over my murals after the exhibition ends."

For this exhibition, he is working with Murobond Paints, a specialist in paints for heritage buildings.

The Penang distributor of the paint, Lum Choon & Co Sdn Bhd, is also the owner of the bus depot.

He said his company has known Zacharevic since the young artist used Murobond paints for his George Town Festival 2012 street art project and when he was shown the property, he knew it was the venue for his exhibition.

"We have always known that this is a suitable place for art when we acquired the property. We have kept the premises as it is to preserve its old charm and attractiveness.

"So far, we only did some work to restore the roof, flooring and plumbing," Tan said.

The goal is to maintain the property as a place for art to flourish.

Lim lauded both Zacharevic and Tan for their good work in promoting art in Penang, and for encouraging others to use the property to express and exhibit their artistic talents.

He said the state government was pleased and even inspired that there is a long-term plan to use the old building for art.

"Zacharevic has sent the state some proposals on this idea that will help art bloom in Penang and we will see what we can do to support it in terms of funding," Lim said.

Zacharevic is also collaborating with the Eastern and Oriental Hotel (E & O) in George Town to open a satellite show at its Victory Annexe next Monday.

The show will feature exclusive oil paintings, sketches and offset prints that documents his fascination with Penang island. – January 16, 2014.

* 'Rubbish/Rubbish is Art' runs until February 14 from 12pm to 8pm daily.

‘American Hustle’, ‘Gravity’ lead Oscar nominations

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 06:36 AM PST

January 16, 2014

Con-men caper "American Hustle" and space thriller "Gravity" led Oscar nominees today with 10 nominations each, including best picture, in the race for the world's top film prize.

Slavery drama "12 Years a Slave" received nine nominations, including in the best picture category, in a year crowded with high-quality films.

Those three films will be joined by six others in the best picture competition: "Captain Phillips", "Dallas Buyers Club", "Her", "Nebraska", "Philomena", and "The Wolf of Wall Street".

Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may nominate up to 10 films for best picture, but only chose nine this year. A notable exclusion was the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis", which had won some top critics' awards.

The Somali piracy thriller "Captain Phillips", the AIDS activism tale "Dallas Buyers Club", and heartland comedy "Nebraska" each secured six nominations. Director Martin Scorsese's cautionary tale on financial greed, "The Wolf of Wall Street", followed with five, as did the quirky computer-age romance, "Her".

Eight individuals in the acting categories are first-time nominees, including Chiwetel Ejiofor as the free man sold into slavery in "12 Years a Slave". He will compete in the best actor race with Matthew McConaughey, the Golden Globe winner last Sunday for his role as the unlikely AIDS crusader in "Dallas Buyers Club".

Meryl Streep extended her lead as the most nominated performer with an 18th nomination, this year for best actress as the matriarch in "August: Osage County". She goes up against fellow Oscar winners Sandra Bullock as the astronaut lost in space in "Gravity" and Cate Blanchett as the riches-to-rags socialite in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine".

The Academy will hand out the Oscars at a ceremony hosted by comedian Ellen DeGeneres in Los Angeles on March 2. - Reuters, January 16, 2014.

Doctor convicted in Michael Jackson death loses appeal

Dr Conrad Murray sits in court during his trial in the death of pop star Michael Jackson in Los Angeles in this file photo taken October 13, 2011. - Reuters pic, January 16, 2014.Dr Conrad Murray sits in court during his trial in the death of pop star Michael Jackson in Los Angeles in this file photo taken October 13, 2011. - Reuters pic, January 16, 2014.A California appellate court refused yesterday to overturn the conviction of Michael Jackson's personal physician, Conrad Murray, who was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of the pop star.

The three-judge panel of California 2nd District Court of Appeal unanimously upheld Murray's 2011 conviction, ruling that there was sufficient evidence and there were no errors during his trial.

Grenada-born Murray, 60, was released from a Los Angeles jail in October after serving two years.

Murray's six-week trial in 2011 grabbed global attention after Jackson, preparing for a series of comeback concerts in London, died unexpectedly in 2009 at age 50 from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic, propofol.

Prosecutors successfully argued at the trial that Murray, who was hired by concert promoter AEG Live as Jackson's general practitioner, was grossly negligent in administering the powerful anesthetic, which was used to help the singer sleep.

Murray's attorneys presented the case that Jackson had injected himself with the powerful anesthetic.

The cardiologist's current attorney handling his appeal, Valerie Wass, said she anticipated an appeal would be filed to the California Supreme Court.

"I'm always of the opinion that he has a better chance in the (California) Supreme Court or federal court," Wass said.

Murray, whose medical licence was either suspended or lapsed in California, Nevada, Texas and Hawaii, has said he wants to practice again, but so far his appeals have been turned down. - Reuters, January 16, 2014.

Gillian Anderson authors ‘EarthEnd Saga’ sci-fi series

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 02:59 AM PST

January 16, 2014

Known for her time as paranormal sceptic Dana Scully in "The X-Files" and praised for cinematic roles in "The House of Mirth" and "Bleak House", Gillian Anderson (pic) is now co-authoring a sci-fi series for new imprint Simon451.

The label, named in homage to Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451", is a new venture from New York publisher Simon & Schuster and puts first in the series, "A Vision of Fire", on track for October release.

She's partnered on the project by co-author Jeff Rovin, who wrote the "Tom Clancy's Op-Center" series and encouraged her to try her hand at a sci-fi story, she told Entertainment Weekly.

"I don't think I'd ever think to write something in this genre without the prodding of someone like Jeff," she said. "But I realised I had ideas hidden within me for a series and a lead character, in this case, a heroine."

It's child psychiatrist Caitlin O'Hara who takes centre stage in "A Vision of Fire", but her time with a particular girl prods her into action – "the girl's behaviour is tied to much greater forces in the universe, and as the story unfolds, [Caitlin] must prevent destruction on a grand scale."

As for her own motivations, Anderson mentioned her desire to see a strong female lead, around her own age, and believes that not only is "A Vision of Fire" something that both she and other women would like to read, but that the Saga is well-positioned for an eventual cinematic adaptation. - AFP/Relaxnews, January 16, 2014.

– 16 Januari, 2014.

Pemuda Umno beri amaran jangan main isu kangkung

– 16 Januari, 2014.

‘Smart Autocrat’ – Tun dan ISA

Posted: 15 Jan 2014 06:29 PM PST

January 16, 2014

Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad is a member of the PAS central working committee and ex-MP of Kuala Selangor.

– 16 Januari, 2014.

‘Smart Autocrat’ – Tun dan ISA

Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad is a member of the PAS central working committee and ex-MP of Kuala Selangor.
