Don’t tell kids why their veggies are good for them, study suggests

"We propose that young children infer from messages on food instrumentality that if a certain food is good for one goal, it cannot be a good means to achieve another goal," Fishbach explains in an article slated for publication in the October 2014 issue of the Journal of Consumer Research.

"As such, if food is presented as making them strong... these children will conclude the food is not as tasty, and will therefore consume less of it."

In short, the study concludes that the best way to foster healthy eating habits in young children is to avoid telling them how fruits and vegetables will make them stronger, taller or smarter.

To reach these findings, researchers carried out five experiments on a sample population of 270 preschool-aged children (ages three to five). The study found that children ate more of a food when it was presented without commentary or when it was presented simply as tasty, without any indication of its "usefulness".

Meanwhile, a separate study published last year in the journal Psychological Science explored a different approach and found that teaching kids about nutrition through books could boost their vegetable intake. Scientists from Stanford University in the US found that even very young children, aged 4 and 5, could benefit from a conceptual framework, built up over a period of three months, that encourages them to understand why eating a variety of foods is healthy, the researchers said. Over time, kids chose to eat more vegetables. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 23, 2014.

Are you eating your protein the wrong way?

Here's what the average American diet looks like: a carb-heavy breakfast, a sandwich or salad at lunch, and an overly large serving of meat and protein for dinner, note researchers from the University of Texas.

But when scientists measured rates of muscle protein synthesis in healthy adults after giving them similar diets that distributed protein differently, they found that muscle synthesis was 25% greater among volunteers who consumed evenly distributed amounts of protein throughout the day, compared to those who took in the bulk of their protein at dinner.

Researchers caution, however, that the results of their study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, don't mean we need to increase our protein intake. Rather, that we need to be more thoughtful about how we distribute it.

"For breakfast consider replacing some carbohydrate, particularly the simple sugars, with high-quality protein," suggested lead author Doug Paddon-Jones.

"Throw in an egg, a glass of milk, yogurt or add a handful of nuts to get closer to 30 grams of protein, do something similar to get to 30 for lunch, and then moderate the amount of protein for dinner. Do this, and over the course of the day you will likely spend much more time synthesising muscle protein."

The findings could be important for promoting healthy aging and the maintenance of muscle size and strength. With age, muscle mass is known to decrease.

The latest research builds on previous studies which likewise vaunt the merits of eating protein-rich breakfasts.

A recent study out of the University of Missouri-Columbia, for instance, found that women who ate eggs or added yogurt to their breakfast routines helped maintain stable glucose and insulin levels throughout the day. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 23, 2014.

Alonso fastest in Monaco’s rain-hit second practice

Posted: 22 May 2014 08:56 AM PDT

May 22, 2014

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso (pic) topped the times in Thursday's rain-restricted second free practice ahead of Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.

The 32-year-old Spaniard clocked a best lap of one minute and 18.482 seconds to finish fastest, in a brief flurry of 15 minutes' late dry weather action, ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

But Hamilton was fastest overall for the day, having clocked a best lap of 1:18.271 in the morning when he and Mercedes team-mate German Nico Rosberg dominated the session.

Two-time champion Alonso recorded his best lap in the brief dry run in the afternoon with 1:18.482 ahead of Hamilton on 1:18.901.

They were the only two to dip below the 1:19 barrier in the afternoon session.

Defending four-time champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull was third ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne in his Toro Rosso car and Valtteri Bottas of Williams.

After a heavy downpour during the interval before second practice began, the track was left so wet that most of the field declined to venture out for 45 minutes or more.

When a few drivers led the way only a handful followed and with 20 of the 90 minutes remaining, the action was limited to a few laps set by the two McLaren men, Vettel and Raikkonen.

The Finn was one of the first out, but suffered a gearbox problem that left him stuck in third and forced him out of the session leaving Button on top ahead of Vettel and Alonso.

Hamilton, who was fastest ahead of Rosberg in the morning session, delayed his participation until 15 minutes from the end when he went out on intermediate tyres.

At that stage, the track was still damp and potentially treacherous.

Venzuelan Pastor Maldonado of Renault said: "It's been a bit boring, but we're just waiting for the track to dry. We want the best conditions.

"It's quite risky and, in my opinion, it's not important to be out on track on the intermediate or full wet tyres."

His views appeared to represent the majority of a pit lane that saw little point in taking risks in tricky conditions when dry weather has been forecast for Saturday's critical qualifying session.

With ten minutes remaining, only nine of the 22 drivers had set a time, but in a final flurry of action – as the track dried in warm sunshine – all of the remaining drivers went out on the "supersoft" tyres to gain experience and data ahead of Saturday.

Rooney ready to deliver at World Cup

Posted: 22 May 2014 08:52 AM PDT

May 22, 2014

England striker Wayne Rooney (pic) said Thursday there would be no excuses if he failed to deliver for his country at the 2014 World Cup.

Rooney broke through on the international stage at the 2004 European championships as an 18-year-old where his performances earned him a place in the team of the tournament but his subsequent displays at major competitions have been undermined by injuries.

The Manchester United forward was rushed back from a metatarsal injury in time for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where he was sent off in England's quarter-final loss to Portugal, while his preparations for the tournament in South Africa were hampered by an ankle problem.

However, the 28-year-old insists he has fully recovered from a groin injury that caused him to miss the final three games of the Premier League season.

"I have no issues whatsoever and I am ready for this tournament," Rooney told British media at England's pre-World Cup training camp in the Algarve.

"I am going to give everything and leave everything on the pitch.

"I've been here before and I've said what I feel I can deliver and what I can do and it hasn't happened.

"I think this is the one where I have to show what I can do. I believe I am in the best possible shape and the best condition I can be in to do that."

Rooney, who has yet to score at a World Cup, believes the finals in Brazil represent his best chance to belatedly leave his mark on the world stage.

"For me personally, I feel the World Cup in 2018, I'll be a bit older then so it will obviously be difficult to impact that the way I believe I can do.

"So, I feel this is the really last big one that I feel will probably get the best out of me. I feel ready, fresh and as good as I can do to go into this tournament.

"I am ready for it. I am excited for it. There will be no excuses this time if I don't perform. I certainly won't be looking for any excuses this time," said the Manchester United frontman.

Rooney and his teammates will start their World Cup campaign against Italy on June 14 before further Group D clashes with Uruguay and Costa Rica.

The striker believes the blend of youth and experience in Roy Hodgson's side will serve England well in Brazil.

"I believe we can go far. I believe we've got the players and our aim is to win the tournament.

"We don't want to be going there saying we would be happy getting to a quarter-final or even a semi-final.

"Our aim is to win the tournament and that's what we are preparing. That is what we hope is going to happen." - AFP, May 22, 2014.

A day to remember, one last time

Poignantly, what they said about D-Day at the time also applies to next month's 70th anniversary of the pivotal 24 hours of World War II.

When the dwindling band of veterans of the Longest Day gather in Normandy, they will do so in the knowledge that, for all but a tiny handful of them, it will be for the last time.

With the youngest survivors, crop-haired teenagers when they took part in the biggest amphibious assault in human history, now approaching their 90th birthdays, age and frailty are making it increasingly difficult for them to continue the annual pilgrimage to the beaches that bore witness to so many individual acts of extraordinary heroism that, collectively, changed the course of history.

One prominent group, the Normandy Veterans Association, has already announced that it will disband after this year's ceremonies.

From now on, the world will have to find new ways to sustain the memory of the young men who put their lives on the line to ensure the success of the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe and, ultimately, the defeat of Hitlerism.

Against that backdrop, no effort has been spared to ensure that this year's ceremonies amount to a fitting tribute to the 156,000-plus troops who waded or parachuted onto French soil on June 6, 1944, nearly 4,500 of whom would be dead by the end of the day.

A flotilla of ships will set off from Britain's main naval port of Portsmouth on June 5 in commemoration of the nearly 7,000 vessels that took part in the invasion.

A mass parachute drop is scheduled to take place at Ranville, the first village to be liberated, and there will be a series of fly-pasts by historic and contemporary fighter planes along with many other re-enactments, memorial ceremonies and military processions in a part of France that cherishes the memory of the sacrifices made by the Allied forces in the name of its liberation.

The ceremonies are to be attended by an A-list of international leaders, headed by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, US President Barack Obama and, despite current tensions over Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia's annexation of Crimea in March has sparked the worst crisis in the West's relations with Moscow since the end of the Cold War – but the diplomatic "nuclear option" of excluding Putin from commemorations to which German Chancellor Angela Merkel is invited was never seriously considered.

D-Day happened partly as a result of pressure from Soviet leader Joseph Stalin for the Allies to open up a new front that would relieve the pressure on the Red Army in the east.

Although the liberation of Normandy and France as a whole was to take many more months, sufficient progress was made on D-Day itself for Stalin to believe that the tide of the war had turned decisively against the Nazis.

"History will record this deed as an achievement of the highest order," Stalin wrote in a telegramme to British leader Winston Churchill.

Given that history, Putin's presence in Normandy should have been an opportunity to renew and enhance bonds between Moscow and the West.

Instead, the Ukraine situation is certain to make for some tense exchanges, particularly in the wake of this week's comments by Britain's Prince Charles likening Putin's conduct to that of Hitler prior to World War II. – AFP, May 22, 2014.

Cannes autograph-hunters brave sun, rain, long hours for ‘dream’

Celebrities thrill fans as they parade across the red carpet at the Cannes film festival. – Reuters pic, May 22, 2014.Celebrities thrill fans as they parade across the red carpet at the Cannes film festival. – Reuters pic, May 22, 2014.Packed behind security barriers, scorched by the sun and pelted by rain, they are the real stars of the Cannes film festival – the intrepid autograph hunters.

The fans on the front line of the world's largest cinema showcase, perched on stepladders across from the famous red carpet steps, are ecstatic about all the celebrities and the glamour.

"I'm living my dream... There's no one happier than I am. It's been building up since when I was six or seven," said Martine Santoro, 61, who watched the images from Cannes when she was a child in Paris and vowed to get there one day in person.

A toy piano rigged up on the front of Santoro's stepladder is her homage to this year's festival jury president, "The Piano" director Jane Campion.

The instrument caught Campion's eye on opening night and she came over to sign an autograph, as did Nicole Kidman, there to promote her starring role in "Grace of Monaco".

As the movie legends pass by, the hunters scream and implore, waving notepads and pens.

"Those who want autographs put themselves in front, and those who want photos go behind, it works out nicely. It's the hierarchy of the stepladders," said Marseille resident Jean-Marc Stahl, 64, attending his 19th Cannes.

"Once it starts, and everyone is in place, you can't move around anymore. You're stuck."

Competition for a good position is fierce. Stahl lined up five days before the festival opened to nab a front-row spot and now takes turns with others to guard against interlopers.

"There are people who show up on Wednesday morning for the opening night and they say, 'Okay, I'm going to put my stuff here' and we say, 'Whoa, wait a minute, no way!'"

In the lulls between celebrity sightings, the autograph hunters relax into their own Cannes party.

"Of course, we have champagne," said Santoro. "And we drink rose at night... it's very convivial." Before or after the red carpet arrivals? "Both."

Not all of the stars are as accommodating as Kidman.

Actress Kristen Stewart provoked boos, hisses and tears when she turned her back on fans who had come from all over France to see the "Twilight" star three years ago, Santoro said.

Action star Bruce Willis pulled the same stunt, said Stahl.

"One year, he got out of the car and he was scared of the crowd, he took off," Stahl said. "It's crazy because when you see him, he's such a tough guy in films, but no. He got booed."

Not far from the autograph seekers, standing outside the main festival building is Philippe Durand, holding a small sign in French: "An invite, please."

The 36-year-old is a member of another Cannes coterie – the small army of movie buffs hoping to persuade passing festival-goers to hand over spare tickets to screenings not open to the public.

He and his fellow ticket hunters are "rendering a service" to festival organisers, making sure they had full houses for screenings.

"It's a different concept," said Durand, who travelled from Paris and had managed to see four or five films out of the 18 competing for the main Palme d'Or prize.

"We're really not into seeing the stars, we just want to see the films." – Reuters, May 22, 2014.

Tarantino was already expected to make an appearance on the final day of the Cannes Film Festival (Saturday, May 24) to present a restored version of "A Fistful of Dollars", but the news of his presence and Uma Thurman's one day earlier comes as a surprise.

The director and lead actress of "Pulp Fiction" will be in the spotlight tomorrow at a special screening of the film to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its victory in Cannes in 1994, the Hollywood Reporter indicates.

Between the Cannes Film Festival, the Oscars, the Golden Globes and the Baftas, Tarantino's cult thriller claimed a total of 22 nominations and 5 awards between 1994 and 1995. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 22, 2014.

Hanez Suraya saman MAS kerana menceroboh hak privasi

Posted: 22 May 2014 03:35 AM PDT

May 22, 2014

Pelakon drama Hanez Suraya Abdul Aziz (gambar) bertindak menyaman Malaysia Airlines (MAS) kerana mendakwa 'menceroboh privasi'.

– 22 Mei, 2014.

Ahli Pemuda Umno berkelakuan seperti samseng semasa protes, kata DAP

Posted: 22 May 2014 03:12 AM PDT

OLEH EILEEN NG
May 22, 2014

– 22 Mei, 2014.

Perkahwinan: Antara realiti dan angan-angan

Posted: 21 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

May 22, 2014

– 22 Mei, 2014.

Beginning this month, customers can expect to see the new slogan in ads and restaurants across the US, a new mantra that company execs say was developed to drive "more meaningful and more consistent connections with consumers worldwide".

The subtle changes to the old motto are supposed to expand on the idea that burgers can be customised to order – the marketing pitch that differentiates them from burger rival McDonald's.

"'Be your way' also emphasises the Burger King brand's authenticity of unique, great-tasting food," reads a press release.

"The Whopper sandwich for example, is made to order 221,184 different ways, with grill marks, which is why no two are ever the same."

The new spin is also meant to drive a more emotional and personal response by emphasising that "self-expression is most important and it's our differences that make us individuals instead of robots".

"We compared the efficiency of the classic model with five or six small meals a day with that of two larger meals, breakfast and lunch, having more or less the same daily calorie count," Hana Kahleova, a researcher at Prague's Ikem institute, told AFP earlier this week.

The research focused on a sample of 54 men and women aged 30-70 who suffer from obesity and Type 2 diabetes, which is not insulin dependent.

Within three months, those who ate larger meals twice a day lost 1.4 kilos more than those who followed the classic model, Kahleova said.

"Levels of sugar, insulin and glucagon on an empty stomach also fell more rapidly in patients who ate in the morning and at midday, and their sensibility to insulin also improved."

But she warned that "anyone taking insulin cannot start on this diet without consulting a doctor", saying it would require a significant adjustment of the insulin dosage.

She added that more extensive research was now needed to confirm the results of the study.

"We cannot draw general recommendations based on this single study," she told AFP. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 22, 2014.
