The sparkle in Dominique Portet’s rose wines

The Dominique Portet winery in Yarra Valley. The Dominique Portet winery in Yarra Valley.Dominique Portet makes wines to go with food, and his Brut Rose can be a lovely, sparkling start to any meal. It has very fine bubbles and gives a fresh mouth. It's a blend of 50 per cent Pinot Noir, 30 per cent Chardonnay and 20 per cent Pinot Meuniere.

This French winemaker, originally from Bordeaux, but now settled at his winery in the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia, does not make any sparkling wines except the Dominique Portet Brut Rose. "I don't make a lot of it but I can ask for more money for the rose," said Portet who presided at a wine tasting at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral recently. "Besides, women love the rose."

Portet spent six months in Epernay, France, learning to make champagne, and his Brut Rose is in this champagne style, with finesse, freshness and acidity. This sparkling rose can be kept for six to seven years while the normal rose has a shelf life of just two years.

We tasted the Dominique Portet Fontaine Rose 2012, a blend of Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and found it refreshing, with a great fruit intensity and a dry finish. "In France we drink a lot of rose at the table. It's very friendly, not complicated and very trendy," said Portet. "It goes with salads and tapas, and women like it."

We went on to the Fontaine Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2007. "It's fresh, flavourful and aromatic, with a backbone to it. It has soft and silky tannins," said the winemaker."You can enjoy the aging character. It will last till 2020 to 2025. "It goes with strong meat, especially the Chinese roast duck."

The Dominique Portet Heathcote Shiraz 2009 was rich and powerful, with floral aromatics and hints of spice. It was so smooth.  "The Shiraz vines grow on volcanic soil in the east of Melbourne. The soil is loaded with rich clay that keeps the humidity in," said Portet.

The only wine that we didn't take to was the Fontaine Sauvignon Blanc 2008. "It's done in a very different style from the New Zealand Sauuvignon Blanc."

Yet he is the first to establish a winery and label bearing his family name in Australia. "It was the start of viticulture in the country, at the same time as in the US," he said.  He had arrived at the Yarra Valley, near Domaine Chandon in 1976. "I was in the group developing the wine property in Australia and was asked to take over. I was only 28 then."

It had the Bordeaux DNA that he had set out in search of, and here he started his winery, and the Dominique Portet label in 2000.

His wine education and working experience stood him in good stead. He had qualified at the renowned Montpellier University of Oenology in France and during a compulsory year of military service, was the legion's wine purchasing adviser.

Portet had spent vintages in the Medoc, Rhone Valley, Provence and champagne giant Moet et Chandon in Epernay, France. He had also worked at his brother Bernard's winery Clos du Val in the Napa Valley of California.

Father and son - Dominique with his son Ben at the winery.Father and son - Dominique with his son Ben at the winery. His family in France has had links to the wine industry since 1720, and Portet has continued the tradition with his sons Ben (10th generation winemaker), Thomas and Henri. His father used to be in charge of the Chateau Lafite winery.

Portet explained his shift to the Yarra Valley. "We have a rigid way of doing things in France. Old traditions give you respect, history and class. But in a New World country it's freedom. You work hard and succeed very well. In France you work but nothing happens."

Dominique Portet wines have been selling in Malaysia for the past 20 years. "We have been with Asia- Euro (wine and liquor distributor) for 13 years. Business is good," said Portet. "We sell 40 per cent of the wines in the Yarra Valley, with 30 per cent for export to China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and the Middle East. – September 25, 2013.

Fifty shades of wine

Fifty Shades of Wine. - AFP pic, September 24. Fifty Shades of Wine. - AFP pic, September 24. If her erotic scenes of bondage and sadomasochism weren't enough to get you in the mood, the author of Fifty Shades of Grey has launched a new collection of wines named after her runaway bestsellers to set the tone.

That's right, author E.L. James of the bodice-ripping trilogy has launched a duo of white and red wines which she "personally blended" with California winemakers from the North Coast.

With the tagline "You are Mine," the Fifty Shades of Grey Red Satin is a blend of Petite Syrah and Syrah and is described as having notes of black cherry, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, leather and clove. The wine is aged in French oak barrels.

White Silk is a blend of Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc with aromatics that include lychee and honey and tasting notes of grapefruit, mineral, pear and butterscotch. The white wine is aged in steel tanks.

"Wine plays an important role in Fifty Shades of Grey, adding to the sensuality that pervades a number of scenes," said E.L. James in a statement.

"I've always had a penchant for good wine, so combining two of my passions to blend Red Satin and White Silk was a natural extension of the series. I hope my readers curl up with a glass as they enjoy the romance between Anastasia and Christian."

Meanwhile, the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise has become big business, not only with spinoff wines and a blockbuster version that's set to bring the steamy sex scenes to life, but with amusing parodies including Fifty Shades of Chicken, a wildly erotic and animalistic cookbook in which a raw, organic bird is pulled, jerked, stuffed and trussed.

There's also Fifty Sheds of Grey, described as "one man's struggle against a tide of tempestuous, erotic desire and the greatest love of all: the love between a man and his shed."

Fifty Shades of Wine will be sold in select states across the US starting next month. Bottles retail for $18 (RM57.91). - AFP Relaxnews, September 25, 2013.

Walcott to miss England World Cup qualifiers

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 08:47 AM PDT

September 24, 2013

Arsenal and England forward Theo Walcott (pic) is to undergo "minor" surgery on his abdomen which will keep him out of action until after next month's World Cup qualifiers, the Premier League leaders announced today.

Walcott's injury means he will be sidelined from the Wembley fixtures against Montenegro and Poland on October 11 and 15 respectively, with England still to book their place at next year's World Cup finals in Brazil.

The winger missed Sunday's win over Stoke City after developing slight damage to his posterior abdominal wall and the club believe Walcott should now undergo what the Arsenal website called a "minor procedure" as this will enable him to start his recovery immediately afterwards.

"Theo will be out for a few weeks," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told the website. "He has developed some damage to his posterior abdominal wall. It's not a hernia, but it's a little structural problem in his abdomen.

"He will have the procedure in Germany on Wednesday and, because it's so minor, we can begin his rehab immediately.

"We are pleased it's being dealt with quickly and he shouldn't miss too many Arsenal matches. But he will miss the forthcoming international matches with England," the Frenchman added.

Walcott will now miss this week's League Cup tie with West Bromwich Albion followed by Saturday's league match at Swansea as well as the Champions League home game against Napoli next Tuesday.

He joins an Arsenal injury list that already includes Lukas Podolski, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla, leaving long-serving manager Wenger with few other options in wide positions. - AFP, September 24, 2013.

Call them Shaq-ramento as O’Neal buys into Kings

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 08:36 AM PDT

September 24, 2013

Shaquille O'Neal (pic), a four-time NBA champion who retired in 2011, has become a part owner of the Sacramento Kings, a rival club he derisively dubbed the "Queens" back in 2002.

Indian businessman Vivek Ranadive, a software company founder who became the owner of the NBA Kings in May for a record $534 million (RM1.7 billion) after the team appeared set to move to Seattle, confirmed the move on a Twitter posting.

"Join me in welcoming @SHAQ to the @SacramentoKings! Only one way to go from here!" Ranadive tweeted.

O'Neal's minority stake in the club gives the former Los Angeles Lakers superstar 7-foot-1 center a new nickname to go alongside dozens of others such as "The Big Aristotle" and "The Big Shaqtus" he coined in his career - "The Big Owner".

O'Neal has been talking with DeMarcus Cousins, the young Kings big man, in the past few months after finishing his season stint as an NBA television commentator.

Having been a thorn in the side of the Kings during championship playoff runs by the Lakers in 2000-2002, O'Neal told USA Today the Kings can only get better after going 28-54 last season, in part because of a deal with the California capital for a new arena.

"Once that new arena comes, once that new downtown is up, once we have a conversation with the players and get everybody to step up, they'll be knocking on the door," O'Neal said.

"Hopefully Vivek, with (fellow part-owner Mark) Mastrov and myself and the team and organization can get it back to where it used to be. I'm telling you these new plans, you are going to be like, 'Sacramento is doing what?' That's what we want people to say.

"What interested me in this deal is the new vision, the new Kings, the new everything. I've always wanted to be part of something like this. ... It's going to be great."

The move comes after ESPN ranked the Kings the worst of 122 combined teams in the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and NBA, based upon the team's mediocre attendance and seven consecutive seasons of having missed the playoffs.

"Hey ESPN, Nice Airball" reads the opening message on the Kings' website." - AFP, September 24, 2013.

Buzz to save bees from extinction - Bernama

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 07:23 AM PDT

September 24, 2013

Understanding the role of bees in agriculture, environment and in the people's lives, the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) is on a mission to save bees from extinction.

It is advancing a natural farming programme by integrating bee-keeping, with the assistance of a bee expert from India.

CAP president S. M. Mohamed Idris (pic) said the association had sought the guidance of P. Kaliyamurthi who had successfully set bee boxes, together with bee colonies at a farm in Balik Pulau, Bukit Mertajam and Sungai Petani.

He said Kaliyamurthi was shocked when he failed to find any bee nest at several areas in Penang, Kedah and Perak, while a hunt for natural bee nests over the past week ended with the discovery of only three bee nests.

"A farmer in Balik Pulau said that excessive use of pesticides and weed killers is one reason for the dwindling number of bee nests in his area.

"A bee that sits on pesticide-covered flower takes the nectar to its colony. That way, the entire colony is poisoned.

"Thus, in the last 20 years, there has been a tremendous drop in the number of bee nests," he told a press conference here today.

Mohamed Idris said lack of knowledge on bees was another reason for the extinction of bees.

He said a set of bee box could produce about 1.5 litres of honey in two months.

"This method ensures the bee colony remains in the same bee box for further nectar keeping, unlike in our current methods where the whole colony flies a way to another place," he added.

He said those who were interested to place bee boxes in their area could contact CAP for guidance and advice. – Bernama, September 24, 2013.

Monteith tribute at Emmys goes ahead despite misgivings

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Actress Jane Lynch delivers a tribute to fellow Glee star Cory Monteith, who died in July of this year, at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. - Reuters pic, September 24.Actress Jane Lynch delivers a tribute to fellow Glee star Cory Monteith, who died in July of this year, at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. - Reuters pic, September 24.Despite some people having misgivings about Cory Monteith being singled out for a tribute at the Primetime Emmy Awards last Sunday, the late Glee star was honoured amid all the tearful acceptance speeches and happy cries of surprise from the Emmy winners.

Montieth died of a drug overdose on July 13 at the age of 31.

Jane Lynch, his co-star on Glee, took the stage to give a moving speech dedicated to the actor, calling Monteith a "gifted and wonderful young man" who was "worthy" of the all the love he received from fans.

"And I am here to say that all that warmth and that charm, that openhearted quality that we loved in Cory was no act. Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that's brought on by addiction," she said.

Earlier, Monteith's mother Ann McGregor said that the Emmys would be too painful for her to watch, but defended choice to honour her son during the In Memoriam segment.

The decision to honour Monteith had been criticised by media strategist Adam Klugman. Klugman was aggrieved that his father Jack Klugman, who died in December at age 90, was not being recognised at this year's awards show despite having won three Emmys.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Klugman said the producers are, "celebrating this self-inflicted tragedy instead of celebrating the life of my father, who won three Emmys; Cory Monteith never won an Emmy".

"If he had lived 30 more years he would have accomplished much more," McGregor told TMZ, adding that Adam Klugman is "misdirected" because he misses his father.

Monteith died in July from a toxic mix of drugs that included heroin and alcohol. Emmy executive producer Ken Ehrlich defended the choice last week, saying Monteith's inclusion was a nod to younger viewers, who may be less familiar with the other honourees (Jonathan Winters, Gary David Goldberg, Jean Stapleton and James Gandolfini).

After Klugman's rebuke, Ehrlich released this statement:

85th Annual Academy Awards Show — "Every generation of television viewers has its favourites, and when we decided to expand the 'In Memoriam' segment to remember certain individuals, we wanted these pieces to be representative as well. To a younger generation, Cory Monteith's portrayal of Finn Hudson was highly admired, and the producers felt that he should be included along with the four other individuals we have singled out."

This is the first year the Emmys is breaking out individuals for the segment. While Klugman was considered the biggest surprise, others lamented Dallas star Larry Hagman's omission. - Agencies, September 24, 2013.

Japan’s Murakami favourite for Nobel prize — again

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 08:23 PM PDT

September 24, 2013

Japanese literary superstar Haruki Murakami (pic) is a favourite for this year's Nobel Prize in Literature, betting odds showed Friday, after repeatedly being mentioned as a contender for the prestigious global gong.

Online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com was Friday offering odds of 3-1 on the novelist scooping up the prize, which will be announced in Sweden next month.

Murakami, who has a large and loyal following worldwide, has been a regular nominee for the prize for many years, and was Ladbrokes' top bet at one point last year, when he lost out to China's Mo Yan.

In the odds offered by Ladbrokes, Murakami is followed by US writer Joyce Carol Oates at 6-1. Peter Nadas from Hungary is the third favourite at 7-1, with South Korean Ko Un and Algerian Assia Djebar tied in fourth at 10-1.

Murakami, who spends much of his time in the United States, is known for writing lyrically and surreally about Japanese who refuse to toe the line in a homogenous society, peppering his works with pop culture references.

His three-volume novel "1Q84" proved a worldwide phenomenon, and non-Japanese-speaking fans are now eagerly waiting for translation of his latest — "Shikisai wo Motanai Tazaki Tsukuru to Kare no Junrei no Toshi (Colourless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage)" — expected next year.

It was released in April in Japanese.

Murakami's latest novel tells the story of a young man struggling with an ordeal in his past, who uses the support offered by a romance to get back on his feet.

Translated into some 40 languages, his works have attracted fans globally with their so-called "Murakami world" — fantastical scenes such as a giant frog inviting a salaryman into an epic battle, or skies that rain mackerel.

Mukhriz, the new player in Umno

Posted: 23 Sep 2013 04:56 PM PDT

September 24, 2013

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim founded Malaysia's largest law partnership before focusing on politics. He was a minister in the Abdullah administration, was in Umno, PKR and last in KITA as its president.

All the interest in the upcoming Umno elections is understandable because the party's president becomes prime minister of the country. It's usually a boring affair, especially when there is no contest for Umno's top two positions.

Cynics will say it's the same routine, with the oligarchs who have ruled for decades taking their turns to rule and, at the same time, deciding who is next in line to succeed them. It's like a game of musical chairs being played by a small and very elite group.

What I find laughable is the contention that Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir's challenge for the vice-president's post is an attempt by the old, conservative guard to cling to power. Some even say that the challenge is an attempt to bring Mahathirism back into  Malaysian politics, without even bothering to explain what that really means.

Before we get carried away, let's be clear about one thing: there is no right or left wing in Umno. There is only the business wing.

There is hardly any division within the party that is based on ideological or philosophical differences. The contestation is never about political ideas or about the fate of the nation, but about control over power.

The  focus of this year's party elections will probably be the same. This time we have a new policy to empower the Bumiputera and during the speeches there will probably also be an adequate supply of Chinese-bashing and tongue-lashing against "ungrateful" Malays.

No faction or group will talk about corruption or abuse of power or take an interest in the country's finances. Clearly, the fate of other Malaysians who do not carry the Bumi tag does not matter.

This time around however, there is a significant difference to the proceedings: Dato' Sri Najib Tun Razak has opened up the party by allowing more contests at the divisional and Supreme Council levels. This is a positive development. It shows that the president is reasonably confident of his position and that he is trying to create more choices for the party, whether for political or business positions.

Mukhriz's candidacy for the vice-president's post is important in this regard. Umno will rule this country for quite a while longer, at least for as long as race-based politics hold sway and until the Opposition are able to get their collective act together.

Mukhriz is a member  of Umno's elite group and only from this group will we find the leaders who will rule Malaysia. If there  choices within Umno's elite, then all the better for the country. The present crop of top leaders does not inspire confidence so adding a few more from the elite group is good.

One of these future leaders took great pains to explain how sincere Umno is about empowering the Malays. The question however, is which Malays are being empowered?

Will the party deign to help Opposition-held states? Will the federal Government help Kelantan financially so it can overcome its water woes? Will they help Malays who voted against them in the last General Election? Will they practise an open tender system for contracts and be transparent with their procurement policy? Will they prosecute Umno corrupt leaders? Will party leaders explain how they got to be rich and where their family members got all their wealth from?

The answer is "No" and that's why Umno is not sincere in helping and empowering the Malays. They can flaunt their oratorical skills and shout "Hidup Melayu!" as loudly as they want to but no one will believe them.

I remember that in 1998, former Prime Minister and party president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad ordered the Ministry of International Trade and Industry to display at the party's General Assembly the full list of Bumiputera who got special share allocations to show that he was not making his children and cronies rich with the Bumipolicy. He wanted to disprove the allegations made against him.

The only way people can believe the sincerity of leaders is when these leaders are not afraid to be examined, to be transparent and to properly answer allegations made against them. Anything less is hogwash. - September 24, 2013.
