International chef of the year 2013 – the other Adria

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:18 PM PST

December 20, 2013

Albert Adria (pic) is the little brother no longer. After years of toiling under his famous sibling Ferran's shadow, the Spaniard, once described as one of the world's most underrated chefs, has been named The Daily Meal's International Chef of the Year 2013.

With four Barcelona restaurants under his name, two of which were bestowed with their first Michelin stars for 2014, and a nod from Time magazine as one of 13 "Gods of Food" this fall, Adria has enjoyed a banner year.

As The Daily Meal's 2013 International Chef of the Year, Adria joins a canon of master chefs such as Massimo Bottura, José Andrés, René Redzepi and Grant Achatz who were likewise recipients of the lofty title.

Chefs of the year are described as game-changers, pioneers and "culinary standard-bearers" who embody excellence.

In his profile of the rising star, editor Arthur Bovino describes Adria as "energetic yet easygoing, jocular yet still serious, ascendant but approachable" and one of the best-liked chefs within the fraternity of international cooks who regularly play the gastronomy circuit.

And given that he worked with his older brother since the age of 15 at the now-shuttered elBulli – which nabbed the title of World's Best Restaurant five times –  Adria says becoming a chef and restaurateur was written in the stars. Happily for him, some of them turned out be Michelin-grade.

In the interview, Adria also hints at the possibility of opening a New York outpost of his budding restaurant portfolio, though he reveals few other details.

"There does exist a possibility of opening a restaurant in New York City. I have some apprehension but also feel excitement about the idea. I'd love for Americans to enjoy a culinary endeavor of mine."

If he's not importing Peruvian Chifa dishes – fusion Peruvian and Chinese cuisine – to taste buds in Barcelona at Pakta, he's elevating the dining experience to a new level at 41 Degrees, where guests dine on 41 courses which are accompanied by images projected onto a hanging glass art installation around the periphery of the room and a musical soundtrack.

Meanwhile, the US chef deemed this year's game changer was Dan Barber of Blue Hill in New York City and Blue Hill at Stone Barns who was described as one of America's most thoughtful chefs for championing local, sustainable and farm-fresh cuisine. - AFP/Relaxnews, December 20, 2013.

Sweet success as Turkish baklava wins prized EU status

The Gaziantep baklava, described as a "pastry made of layers of filo pastry filled with semolina cream and Antep pistachio", became the first Turkish product to receive the coveted status.

The sweet and nutty treat is one of 16 non-EU products to win the logo, including Darjeeling tea and 10 Chinese foodstuffs.

At the same time, the European Commission also recognised foods from Greece – Turkey's arch rival and recipient of billions in EU bailout funds – and eurosceptic Britain.

Greece's Santorini tomato, a cherry tomato that draws its fruity sweetness from lengthy exposure to the sun and a volcanic soil, won protected status, joining such Greek delights as feta cheese.

And Britain won protected status for its Yorkshire Wensleydale, a creamy-white cheese made in the northern county since the 11th century.

The Wensleydale joins the Cornish pastry, Scottish wild salmon and the Birmingham Balti.

Turkey, which first formally applied for membership of the European bloc in 1987, has seen its application crawl along at a glacial pace.

But its food and drink seems to be winning friends around the world, with Turkish coffee being included this year on the Unesco intangible cultural heritage list. - AFP, December 20, 2013.

‘Mother of all gold medals’ out of Malaysia’s grasp

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 07:17 AM PST

December 19, 2013

Malaysia's hopes of defending the gold medal in football at the Myanmar SEA Games went up in smoke when they lost 3-4 in a penalty shootout to Indonesia in the semifinal at the Zayar Thiri Stadium today.

The score after regulation play was 1-1.

It was sweet revenge for the Indonesians who lost 3-4 to Malaysia in a penalty shootout in the final at the last edition of the Games in Indonesia in 2011.

Yohanes Ferinando Pahabol scored the winning goal for the Indonesians for a shot at the "mother of gold medals in the SEA Games" when the shootout was tied at 3-3.

The failure of A. Thamil Arasu and Shahrul Mohd Saad to convert their penalties buried Malaysia, although Nazmi Faiz Mansor, Mohamad Fadhli Mohd Shas and Mohamad Rozaimi Ab Rahim saved Malaysia when they were down 0-2 early in the shootout.

The match had got off to a slow start with both sides exercising caution.

Malaysia had a chance at goal in the 10th minute only to see Thamil Arasu's piledriver from outside the penalty box caught by Indonesian keeper and team captain Kurnia Meiga Hermansyah.

The Indonesians also came close to be in the lead in the 25th minute, but Yandi Sofyan Munawar's shot sailed over the Malaysian goal guarded by Mohd Izham Tarmizi Roslan.

Five minutes later, disaster struck for Malaysia when Indonesian midlfielder Bayu Gatra Sanggiawan fired home during a goal-mouth melee.

Malaysia had a golden chance to level the score in injury time of the first half, but Mohamad Fadhli Mohd Shah was slow to capitalise on a free kick taken by team captain Mohd Irfan Fazail.

On resumption, Indonesia upped the ante by trying to go for the kill and came close to increasing their lead in the 68th minute, but Yandi Sofyan's shot was saved by the Malaysian keeper.

The Malaysians showed they were made of sterner stuff and continued to pile on the pressure on the Indonesian goal.

Another chance came in the 80th minute, but D. Saarvindran's attempt was denied by the Indonesian keeper.

Malaysia's persistence paid off when Thamil Arasu equalised in the 84th minute, forcing extra time which did not result in a winner.

At the post-match press conference, Malaysia's coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee praised his boys for their never say die attitude, but admitted "today was not their day".

"The match went down to the wire, but Indonesia prevailed today," he said.

Indonesia's coach Rahmad Darmawan said the match had all the ingredients of a final and was happy Indonesia won. - Bernama, December 19, 2013.

Divers in class of their own, net two more gold medals

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 06:07 AM PST

December 19, 2013

Malaysian divers were in a class of their own at the Myanmar SEA Games when they swept the two gold medals offered on the second day of the diving competition at the Wunna Theikdi Aquatics Centre today.

London Olympics bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong Pamg and Ooi Tze Liang powered Malaysia's dominance in the sport in their respective events.

Pandelela easily beat five participant,s including compatriot Loh Zhiayi for the gold in the women's 10m platform with 346.60 points.

Zhiayi made it a 1-2 for Malaysia in the event when she clinched the silver medal with 292.10 points, while the bronze medal went to the host country's diver Saw Hla Nandar who collected 233.15 points.

When met by reporters, Pandelela said she put her Olympic glory behind her in the SEA Games competition.

"My focus was on executing the perfect dive," she said.

Earlier, Tze Liang redeemed his disappointment of a silver medal yesterday when he won the men's 3m springboard event with 431.90 points today.

Another Malaysian, Chew Yi Wei took the bronze with 314.20 points and the silver went to Singaporean diver Lee Mark Han Mi who collected 324.15 points.

Tze Liang said he was elated with the win. After this he would be focusing on preparation for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea next year. - Bernama, December 19, 2013.

From normal lad to radical killer, the mental and physical journeys of Adebolajo

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 08:01 AM PST

December 20, 2013

Adebolajo with bloody hand and cleaver. - Reuters pic, December 20, 2013.1Adebolajo with bloody hand and cleaver. - Reuters pic, December 20, 2013.1Like many teenage boys growing up in soccer-obsessed Britain, Michael Adebolajo enjoyed kicking a ball around the school yard. Those who knew him then say he was

"He was a nice guy who enjoyed playing football. He was normal," a schoolmate from secondary school told Reuters. His life later took a turn.

On Thursday Adebolajo, a 29-year-old convert to Islam, and a second man, 22-year-old Michael Adebowale, were convicted of murdering off-duty soldier Lee Rigby on a street in Woolwich, southeast London, in May.

Their guilt had hardly been in doubt. Images of Adebolajo at the murder scene had shown him covered in blood, holding a knife and meat cleaver and invoking Allah as he tried to justify his actions.

In the witness box, Adebolajo - who preferred to be called Mujahid Abu Hamza - sat metres from members of Rigby's family and described calmly how he was waging war in the name of Islam. "I am a soldier of Allah," he said, flanked by five security guards. "It's a war between Islam and those militaries that invaded Muslim lands. One of them happens to be British military and, unfortunately, the war continues to this day."

Adebolajo, a father of six, described in a police interview played to the court how he hacked at the soldier's neck after he and Adebowale ran the soldier over in their car. "He was struck in the neck with a sharp implement and it was sawed until his head almost detached," Adebolajo told the court.

He said he delivered the fatal strike to the victim, who had simply been the first soldier he and Adebowale had seen on the day of the attack.

How did a pleasant young boy born in multicultural London become an Islamic jihadist? Inquiries by Reuters detail how Adebolajo came to be associated with extremists. His supporters claim he was abused by police during a trip to Kenya and upset after being pressured to work for MI5, Britain's domestic intelligence service.

British security sources declined to comment on the claims. Officials in Kenya deny Adebolajo was abused by the country's police.

"Nobody tortured him. Not even his Kenyan accomplices were tortured. We no longer torture suspects. We only interrogate," Aggery Adoli, regional police coordinator, told Reuters in Mombasa.

Born in London on December 10, 1984, Adebolajo grew up in Romford, east London. His family were Christian and he and his siblings attended church with their parents every Sunday. In court Adebolajo recounted how his family gathered by candlelight to read passages from the Bible at New Year's Eve, and how his mother taught him how to pray.

When he was a teenager, he moved away from London after his parents divorced, returning in 2002 to became a student at the University of Greenwich where he studied building surveying.

The following year he converted to Islam.

"When I came to Islam, I realised real success is not just what you can acquire, but is if you make it to paradise, because then you can relax," he said during the trial.

He described how one of his friends was killed by an improvised explosive device while serving as a British soldier in Iraq. He said he blamed then British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who took Britain into the US-led invasion in 2003, and was disgusted by the images of the bombing campaign shown on TV at the time.

No single event led to Adebolajo's conversion, according to Mizanur Rahman, a radical who knew him and spent two years in prison for inciting people to kill British and American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq during a protest in London in 2006.

"He always had his own concerns and questions about the Christian belief," Rahman told Reuters. "When he came across Islam it appealed to him. It offered solutions for his fears of life and problems in life."

Though friends spoke of Adebolajo's warm nature, there were signs he was becoming radicalised and turning against the West. In 2006 he was sentenced to 51 days in prison for assaulting a police constable at a demonstration. In 2007, he was pictured at a London protest where demonstrators held banners with slogans including "Christian crusades against Islam," and "Muslims persecuted for their beliefs."

Video footage shows Abedolajo alongside the Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary, several of whose followers were convicted of terrorism offences. Choudary denies he or his banned group Al Muhajiroun were behind Adebolajo's radicalisation, and Adebolajo said he did not agree with all Choudary's views.

Adebolajo was to encounter other, more extreme, radicals in Africa.

In October 2010, he turned up in Mombasa, Kenya, passing through communities where radical Muslim clerics openly supported al Shabaab, an Islamist group that has been waging an insurgency against Somalia's government since 2007. The group, which joined al Qaeda in 2012, is a militant offshoot of the Islamic Courts Union that previously controlled central and southern parts of Somalia.

To send funds and recruits to Somalia, al Shabaab developed a network in Kenya that involved a cleric called Sheikh Aboud Rogo, according to local police, who charged Rogo with terrorism offences, and the United States, which imposed financial sanctions on him. Adebolajo attended a mosque where Rogo preached, said police.

Rogo, who was shot dead by unknown assailants last year, was a rousing orator who called for sharia law. Sources at the country's Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) in Mombasa say Adebolajo was welcomed into Rogo's circle of al Shabaab sympathisers.

Potential recruits for al Shabaab would spend time being "psychologically prepared" by their Kenyan handlers, said Sheikh Ngao Juma, founder of Kenya Muslim National Advisory Council, who spent months researching a report on al Shabaab radicalisation in Kenya. "They were prepared for what to expect in Somalia and trained not be afraid to be killed," Juma said.

The Mombasa branch of Kenya's anti-terrorism police, trained by Britain and the United States, knew this. They knew Adebolajo might be heading to Somalia, according to two officers from the ATPU. "We received intelligence from our seniors in Nairobi," said one officer, who added Adebolajo was kept under surveillance.

Adebolajo stayed around the Majengo area of Mombasa, a run-down neighbourhood. He prayed at several mosques, but most often at the Mussa mosque where Rogo preached, the officers said.

More than four weeks after landing in Kenya, Adebolajo and five Kenyan youths, some as young as 17, set off on an 8-hour bus journey from Mombasa to Lamu on the coast of Kenya about 96 km from its border with Somalia. Abdul Swaleh, a student in Mombasa, was one of the five Kenyans making the journey. He told Reuters: "The five of us were on the bus when we sat next to Michael, who was an Englishman. We didn't know him, but we started talking as we were all going to the Lamu Cultural Festival."

The six took a fishing boat to the village of Kizingitini, where one of the men had extended family, according to Swaleh. There he, Adebolajo and the others were cornered by armed Kenyan police on a jetty. Swaleh said he noticed several white men standing a short distance away.

"They didn't come to us, but the police officers were going to them. They were taking instructions from them and then coming back to ask us questions."

Adebolajo and his five Kenyan companions protested their innocence, but were bundled away to Kizingitini's tiny police post and later taken back to Mombasa in shackles. "They were punching and kicking all of us," Swaleh alleged. "Afterwards they took us to the Kizingitini police station and started abusing us into saying we were going to Somalia."

Police deny those allegations.

Adebolajo appeared in court in Mombasa on suspicion of trying to join an Islamist group. He kept asking police and the court why Kenya was allowing itself to be used in the war between al Qaeda, America and Britain, according to Aboubakar Yusuf, one of two lawyers who acted on his behalf.

"Unlike his colleague-suspects, who looked worried and terrified, he was vocal and demanded to know why he had been arrested, and what was wrong with crossing over to Somalia," Yusuf said.

One Mombasa anti-terrorism police officer recalled how Adebolajo won over several other detainees with his mockery of the guards. "Sometimes he ridiculed us, calling us puppets who had allowed ourselves to be used by haters of Islam," the officer said.

The court granted Kenyan police more time to question the suspects, but to Yusuf's surprise, Adebolajo's name had been removed from the list of suspects.

"The investigating officer told the court that the British High Commission had written to them recommending his release. He said the commission told them (Adebolajo) was clean," Yusuf said.

The British High Commission in Nairobi said it helped Adebolajo, but did not divulge to what extent. Adebolajo was set free and deported from Kenya. "We never saw him after that," said Swaleh who, along with the other suspects, was eventually freed without charge.

Friends claim that during his time in Kenya and afterwards, Adebolajo came under pressure from the British secret services to work for them. In April 2012 a close friend of Adebolajo's told Cageprisoners, a charity which campaigns for those detained on terrorism charges, that at least three members of Adebolajo's family had been asked to persuade Adebolajo to work for MI5. The family declined to comment.

Adebolajo and a relative went to the office of the charity and spoke about how he had been detained in Kenya, alleging he had been sexually and physically abused, according to Moazzam Begg, the charity's Outreach Director. Begg is a British Muslim who was detained in Guantanamo Bay as a suspected terrorist, but released without charge in 2005.

Adebolajo told the charity that after he returned to London he was questioned by MI5 and the police. "He felt that they (MI5) were complicit in what happened to him and he continued thereafter to be approached by them several times by phone calls, by text messages," said Begg.

Kenyan police said they had no knowledge of any involvement by MI5. "We don't know anything about MI5 and Adebolajo. We dealt with him only as our suspect then. If he had been communicating with MI5, that was up to him," Adoli said.

British security services declined to comment.

Cressida Dick, assistant commissioner at London's Metropolitan Police and Britain's top counter-terrorism police office, said contacts between intelligence agents and radicals were not surprising. "It would be not unexpected for somebody who may have been suspected of involvement in terrorism to be approached by an intelligence agency," she said. "That's something that intelligence agencies do."

On May 22, 2013, Lee Rigby was walking down a street in Woolwich, when Adebolajo and Adebowale knocked him down with their car. A post-mortem concluded that Rigby, an Afghanistan war veteran who had also served in Cyprus, died from "multiple incised wounds" inflicted during the ensuing attack.

Like Adebolajo, Adebowale denied murder. Born in 1991 in south-east London, Adebowale - who prefers to be known as Ismael Ibn Abdullah - was a convert to Islam. His lawyer told the court that in January 2008 Adebowale was stabbed, along with a friend who died. Adebowale later suffered from panic attacks and nightmares, said the lawyer.

The court heard from a number of psychiatrists, some pointing to signs of mental illness in Adebowale. He declined to give evidence during the trial and his police interview was never shown to the jury.

After the killing it was Adebolajo who explained his motivation to an onlooker, who filmed him on a smartphone.

"The only reason we have killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers. It is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth," he said, while clutching a bloodied knife and meat cleaver, occasionally looking over to the body of the dead soldier.

Police said they later found books and two laptops belonging to Adebolajo that contained articles and lectures with titles including "Extreme Islam," "The book of Jihad" and "Inspire," a magazine published by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. One passage from "Extreme Islam" that had been highlighted read: "Islam is always in need of martyrs."

In court Adebolajo denied the texts belonged to him or his family.

Whether the British authorities could have done more to stop Adebolajo is one of the questions a committee of lawmakers who oversee the intelligence services has begun to examine. - Reuters, December 20, 2013.

Chinese bodyguard entrepreneur sees big profits from protection

Chen's company Tianjiao, which he says is China's first professional academy to train former soldiers and others as bodyguards, is doing so well that he is considering a stock market listing.

"When we started our business, most of our clients were celebrities," Chen, 30, told Reuters. "Most of our clients now are rich entrepreneurs. It's all related to their business because I think bodyguards are also a status symbol."

China's newly wealthy are not generally targeted by criminals and kidnappers - as happens in countries such as Venezuela - but anger is growing about the widening gap between rich and poor.

There have been isolated incidents of people attacking luxury cars involved in accidents with less well-off citizens.

Tianjiao has hired trainers from Israel and Russia, and is looking to France and Britain as well, Chen said, although the company also works closely with the Chinese military.

"We provide a better platform for retired soldiers, of whom there are thousands every year, so they can get a better job. It would be a waste of talent if these soldiers work as security guards for 2,000 yuan a month," he said.

"Also if they commit crimes and do bad things, it would be a terrible thing for society. But getting high-end training with us and getting a job as a bodyguard is much better, so the army is very grateful for this kind of arrangement we offer."

Chen's clients certainly seem happy with the bodyguards his company trains.

One businessman, who asked to be identified only by his family name Zhang, said he approached Chen after a friend was kidnapped and killed. Zhang now employs 18 bodyguards hired from Tianjiao.

"Apart from the security in my company, they are also responsible for the safety of my family," Zhang said. "Society is not stable nowadays."

Chen expects Tianjiao's annual revenues to hit 100 million yuan within the next five years.

"We are planning to collaborate with investors and venture capital firms for a company listing," he said. - Reuters, December 19, 2013.

Chinese star wins US website apology over sex claims

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 06:48 PM PST

December 19, 2013

A US-based Chinese news agency has apologised to award-winning actress Zhang Ziyi (pic) for claiming she slept with top Chinese officials for money and gifts, a publicist said yesterday.

In a statement Boxun News said there was no evidence to support the claims and acknowledged it did not contact the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star before publishing the allegations last year.

A spokesman for the 34-year-old Chinese actress said she will withdraw her lawsuit against the agency, as long as they adhere to an agreement the terms of which were not disclosed.

"Ms Zhang is confident that the public apology and retraction made by Boxun proves that the allegations are false," said a statement issued on her behalf by the actress's publicist Raina Falcon.

"As such, she will soon dismiss her lawsuit against the news agency, pending their adherence to a resolution agreement and as ordered by the court."

In a piece posted Tuesday on its English-language main page, the agency which often reports unsourced rumours said it published a series of articles starting in May 2012 which included "negative and untrue information about (Zhang), including that she slept with wealthy and powerful men for presents and money".

"These false reports... should never have been published," it said in the piece, entitled "Boxun News retracts reports about Zhang Ziyi".

"As a result, Boxun News now renders its unreserved apology to Zhang Ziyi, has removed the entire series of articles... from the Boxun News website, and issues this formal retraction."

It continued: "Boxun News regrets the publication of these articles and any distress Zhang Ziyi may have suffered as a result of the articles."

"The Boxun News reports... were based on information provided to Boxun News by anonymous sources, who cannot support the information reported. Boxun News also failed to contact Zhang Ziyi before publishing the reports in order to enable her to respond to and refute the allegations."

The agency "now acknowledges that its reports were insupportable and improper, and that Zhang Ziyi has never been questioned in connection with any investigation related to the allegations set forth in the Boxun articles," it said.

"Boxun News recognises and respects Zhang Ziyi's extraordinary achievements in the international motion picture industry as well as her many civic and charitable efforts. Boxun News sincerely apologises to Zhang Ziyi for the damage it has caused to her reputation and career."

Zhang was nominated for a best actress Golden Globe for 2005's "Memoirs of a Geisha", among more than 30 nominations and 20 wins in awards ceremonies around the world.

As well as starring in 2000's Oscar-winning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" by Taiwan's Ang Lee, she has also appeared in films including 2001's "Rush Hour" starring Jackie Chan, and 2004's "House of Flying Daggers". - AFP, December 19, 2013.

Keith Richards of Rolling Stones turns 70

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 04:16 PM PST

December 19, 2013

The Rolling Stones's Keith Richards (pic) hit 70 yesterday with another tour on the horizon, and probably a smirk for everyone who would not have bet he would make it this far in a life of excess.

The unmatched guitar legend isn't just hitting 70 – like Mick Jagger did in August. He is also celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary with former model Patti Hanson, with whom he has two daughters. He also has three children with the Italian actress Anita Pallenberg.

With his trademark bandana tied around his head, open shirt and face wrinkled by years of hard partying and struggles with addiction, Richards' image incarnates pure, undiluted rock and roll.

His low voice sounds otherworldly, while his virtuosity on the guitar has turned even his critics into grudging fans.

Along with the Beatles, the Stones revolutionised popular music in the 1960s.

Richards hits the road with fellow bandmates Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood plus special guest Mick Taylor, who played with the group from 1969 to 1974, on its "14 on Fire" tour that debuts February 21 in Abu Dhabi.

In the run up to the two milestones Richards's web site is urging fans to send him commentaries that will be presented to him as a gift.

"People say 'why don't you give it up?' I don't think they quite understand. I'm not doing it just for the money, or for you. I'm doing it for me," Richards said in "Life", his autobiography, published in 2010.

Much has happened since Richards left Dartford, a town on the outskirts of London where he lived with his working class family, met Jagger on a train and with him formed in 1962 what is today regarded by many as the world's greatest rock and roll band.

The Stones in the 1960s drew on the work of black American rhythm and blues and maestros like Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters.

Richards's guitar riffs are among the most emblematic in the history of rock, etched in the memory of millions with tunes like "Satisfaction", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Sympathy for the Devil" "Brown Sugar", "Let's Spend the Night Together" and "Start Me Up".

Besides their musical wizardry, Richards and Jagger gained fame as womanizing boozers and drug users who were "anti-establishment" in a country steeped in tradition.

Their excesses in the 1960s and 70s brought scandal, trials and jail stints and in 1969 the founding Stones guitar player, Brian Jones, drowned in a swimming pool.

But the band overcame that tragedy – and the surrounding scandal – to pick themselves up and carry on.

Stones fans adore both Richards and Jagger, but most see Richards as the soul of the group – the eternal rebel who formed a raucous duo with Jagger – the lady loving dandy who tired of being manipulated by the music business and himself became an empresario to be reckoned with.

Bill Wyman, 77 and the original bass player of the Stones who left in 1994, will not be on stage this time, although he did play in a 50th anniversary concert in London in London in 2012. – AFP, December 19, 2013.

Dan Brown’s ‘Inferno’, Roth’s ‘Allegiant’ end year as Amazon’s best-selling books

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 07:35 PM PST

December 19, 2013

Dan Brown's "Inferno", Khaled Hosseini's "And the Mountains Echoed", and "The Cuckoo's Calling" by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling) crown Amazon.com's top 20 best-selling adult books for 2013.

Also featuring in the top five were romantic novel "The Husband's Secret" by Liane Moriarty and the professional guidance of Sheryl Sandberg's "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead".

Of the top 20, only "Lean In" sold more in print than it did in digital, while top 10 authors Sylvia Day, John Grisham and David Baldacci made repeat appearances from 2012.

In Young Adult, too, there was another duplicate performance, with Veronica Roth ("Allegiant"), Rick Riordan ("The House of Hades") and Jeff Kinney ("Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck") firmly established in the top three.

Radio host Rush Limbaugh broke the top five with "Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans" and Abbi Glines came in at fifth with "Never Too Far".

Glines, along with Morgan Rice, actually occupied five of the top 20 places in YA, a feat Amazon attributes to its KDP self-published digital download programme. - AFP/Relaxnews, December 19, 2013.

‘Mr Mercedes’ is Stephen King’s 2014 novel

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 04:41 PM PST

December 19, 2013

Retired homicide detective Bill Hodges is pulled back into the chilling unsolved case of Mr Mercedes and must stop the serial killer from striking again.

2013 saw thriller writer Stephen King (pic) back in the limelight as "The Shining" follow-up, "Doctor Sleep", released in September.

June 3 will see the English-language publication of "Mr Mercedes", in which ex-detective Hodges is thrust into the role of amateur investigator, recruiting a bunch of unlikely co-conspirators in an effort to prevent a calculating hit & run driver from striking again.

Hodder displayed no qualms over publishing a work that deviated from the horror genre that King is best known for, with editor Philippa Pride promising that the "brilliantly insightful portrait of a serial mass-murderer" would be "as scary as any supernatural horror story". - AFP/Relaxnews, December 19, 2013.

– 19 Disember, 2013.

Bagaimanapun Pengarang Kanan HCK Media Chong Cheng Hai enggan mengulas apabila dihubungi.

– 19 Disember, 2013.

The best of ties, the worst of timing in Champions League draw

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 03:30 PM PST

December 19, 2013

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

If you were anywhere as excited as I was in eager anticipation of the UEFA Champions League last 16 knockout round draw on Monday night, then you must agree that we could not have asked for a better outcome in terms of key match-ups.

Yes, it is definitely going to be a feast of football when the four best teams in Europe serve up four great games of football.

The slickest and most fluid of football styles in various tactics and strategies displayed by the best players in Europe. Simply the best in every aspect, and we certainly won't have to worry about the proverbial "parked buses" being involved in any way.

I simply cannot wait for Manchester City to play Barcelona over two legs. Is it going to be the end of an era or will Tata Martino begin a new chapter with a more dynamic Barca?

Has the City finally rediscovered the hunger and desire that made them the best in England only two seasons ago?

And then we have The Arsenal going up against the juggernaut that is Bayern Munich, now under the "Pep-py" nous of Guardiola?

Why the hell did this line-up come up in the Round of 16 of the Champions League is anybody's guess, when rightfully, these four teams are worthy of meeting in the semi-finals.

Can the other ties even come close to these two? No way Jose!

Speaking of whom, the now Boring One has only Galatasaray of Turkey to contend with and the obvious cuddles and winks for old boys Didier Drogba (from Chelsea) and Wesley Sneijder (Inter Milan).

I dare say the Drog could very likely serve up two stinkers in this knockout round, in anticipation of a return to Stamford Bridge next season.

Maybe, just maybe, the AC Milan versus Atletico Madrid tie could bring some excitement but expect Diego Simeone to strangle the Milan attack and nick a place in the quarters.

The celebrations have not stopped at Old Trafford since Monday night's draw. However, even as Olympiakos may feel confident after what has been displayed by the Red Devils this season, over the two-leg tie, there can only be one winner!

We can also be assured that Borussia Dortmund will be the one German team guaranteed to survive the Round of 16 as Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 are simply not good enough to trouble Paris St Germain and Real Madrid, respectively.

The hope of Zenit St Petersburg building up a big lead in the first leg to go through despite facing the Yellow Wall in the return is but only that, hope.

Coming back to the "semi-finals", err, I mean the two gigantic clashes, I have got to pick Bayern over Arsenal and a shock win for Manchester City over Barcelona.

It is a long way away from the 18th of February though, and anything can happen in football... not! I am sticking with my picks! – December 19, 2013.
