Donut chain creates cronut knock-off in South Korea

Latest Update: August 01, 2013 05:51 pm

It's the latest sign of the cronut's worldwide domination.

Dunkin' Donuts in South Korea has debuted its version of the hybrid donut-croissant, becoming the first major corporate brand to produce a knock-off of the pastry that's taken the world by storm.

After just two months, New York pastry chef Dominique Ansel's cronut invention has been exported to all corners of the world with pastry shops, hotels, and restaurants either producing blatant copies of the butter bomb, or putting their own twist to the recipe.

But the launch of the "New York Pie Donut" across Dunkin' Donuts stores in South Korea also shows how the power of social media can help an independent baker launch a product so viral that fellow pastry chefs clamber one over the other to get in on the action and answer consumer demand.

According to Quartz, the pastries are being sold in shops in the high-end neighbourhoods of Gangnam in Seoul, along with Jamsil and Myundong, where the trendy "pies" are drawing long lines outside the stores.

In New York, the cronut craze has inspired pre-dawn, mile-long queues.

The Korean Dunkin' Donuts cronut ad, meanwhile, invites customers to "meet" the hottest donut in New York.

The chain also launched the "Donut Croissant" in their Manila stores recently.

Over in Jakarta, the upscale Mandarin Oriental Cake Shop at the Mandarin hotel likewise unveiled a new line of "Kronuts" recently. - AFP, August 1, 2013

Why the world needs to reduce its meat consumption

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:47 PM PDT

August 01, 2013

As the dialogue on the perils of meat consumption continues to grow louder, Dutch scientists are poised to release their lab-grown, test tube beef to the world when a select group of guests will take a bite out of a fake burger - and, perhaps, a bite of history.

At an undisclosed location in London next week, Dutch scientist Mark Post from Maastricht University in the Netherlands will serve up a beef burger made in vitro, at a cost of £250,000 ($380,500 USD).

The 5oz patty will be the result of year's worth of research and the painstaking assembly of 3,000 strips of artificial beef created from the stem cells of a cow's muscle tissue.

But why and where did this project come from? Here's a look at statistics and factoids on the rising cost of meat consumption around the world:

- The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization predicts that global meat consumption will rise to 460 million tonnes in 2050 - or an increase of 65 percent within the next 40 years.

- Where meat consumption is growing the fastest is Asia, in particular China, where consumption has increased by 165 percent since 1990.

- According to some estimates, meat production is responsible for nearly 20 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. The consumption of 1 kg of beef in a domestic household is also equal to driving 160 km (99 miles).

 - The true cost of "cheap meat" includes a variety of stressors such as deforestation, desertification, and overuse of freshwater, inefficient use of energy and food diversion for use as feed.

- The water footprint to produce 1 kg of beef is a whopping 154,000 liters of water, mainly due to the amount required for animal feed.

Per capita meat consumption around the world:

- US leads with 322g of meat consumed (120kg) a year with Aussies and New Zealanders not far behind.

- Europeans consume an average of 200g (76 kg) a year.

- China consumes 160g a day.

- India 12g a day

- Average global meat consumption is 115g (42 kg) a day. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 1, 2013.

Teen US swimmer smashes 1,500m freestyle world record in Barcelona

AFP pic, July 31, 2013.Katie Ledecky of the United States is all smiles after breaking a world record on her way to winning gold in the 1,500m freestyle event at the world swimming championships in Barcelona. AFP pic, July 31, 2013.Sixteen-year-old swimming sensation Katie Ledecky capped another great night for American swimmers at the world championships in Barcelona by smashing the women's 1,500m freestyle world record.

The Washington born swimmer broke Kate Ziegler's six-year-old mark of 15 minutes 42.54 seconds by an amazing six seconds in the race of the night as Denmark's Lotte Friis only took silver despite also bettering Ziegler's record by nearly four seconds.

"I knew we were going pretty fast," said a beaming Ledecky as she took her gold medal tally at the championships to two after also storming to victory in the 400m freestyle on Sunday.

"We separated ourselves from the field early and I felt whoever touched the wall first was going to get that record."

Friis though was left with the most bittersweet taste having produced an extraordinary swim of her own.

"It was really mixed emotions when Katie got the plaque up there because I think I deserve one too," lamented the champion from two years ago in Shanghai.

On a night filled with US success, Missy Franklin also stayed on track in her attempt to match Michael Phelps' record eight gold medal haul from the Beijing Olympics five years ago.

The 18-year-old picked up her first individual gold of the meet in the 100m backstroke, having also been part of the 4x100m relay winning American side on Sunday, and was back in the pool barely 20 minutes later to seal her place in the final of Wednesday night's 200m freestyle final.

Rather than concentrating on her own success though, Franklin was desperate to talk about Ledecky.

"Watching her grow up over the past year or so has been so amazing and watching her swim tonight I knew that record was going down. I'm so proud of her and what she's achieved."

America's gold rush continued as they picked up gold in a third successive race when Matt Grevers edged out teammate David Plummer to take the men's 100m backstroke with Frenchman Jeremy Stravius back in third.

And with Team USA being spearheaded by the teenage duo of Franklin and Ledecky, Grevers was happy to register a first gold of the meet for the US men who have suffered in a first major championships without the retired Phelps.

"Its' been a great day for the USA. It is a big team and the girls are doing great, especially Missy and Katie," he said.

"For the men we're obviously missing Michael so there are some gaps there.

"Ryan (Lochte) has had a very active year out of the pool so we can't expect the same from him and a lot of people need to step up to try and fill that gap. It's great David and I have been able to do that tonight."

Another teenage Olympic champion validated her title from last year's London Olympics as Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte claimed gold in the 100m breaststroke in a time just outside of the world record she set in her semi-final swim on Monday with Russia's Yulia Efimova in second and American Jessica Hardy taking bronze.

And it was also a successful night for France as Stravius' bronze had been preceded by Yannick Angel claiming gold in the men's 200m freestyle.

The Olympic champion just edged out training partner Connor Dwyer, whose silver took the USA's medal tally for the night to six, with Russia's Danila Izotov taking bronze.

In the night's semi-finals, South African duo Chad Le Clos and Cameron Van Der Burgh cemented their status as favourites for the 200m butterfly and 50m breaststroke as they qualified fastest in their respective events.

However, the surprise of the evening came in the women's 200m freestyle as Katinka Hosszu, who had cruised to 200m individual medley gold on Monday night, missed out on the final after registering only the ninth fastest time in qualifying. - AFP, July 31, 2013.

Four-time Major winner Ernie Els (pic) has confirmed he will take part in the US$800,000 (RM2.6 million) Venetian Macau Open for the first time in October.

Els, who has notched up dual wins at both the US Open and the British Open, will be seeking to continue a run of recent good form following a June win at the BMW International Open in Munich.

The 43-year-old South African is a regular on the Asian circuit and will be hoping to add the Macau trophy to two previous Tour wins, at the 2005 BMW Asian Open in China and the 2005 Qatar Masters.

"I am excited to be playing in Macau. I have never been there before but have heard many good things about the tournament as well as the city itself," he was quoted as saying in an Asian Tour press release.

"I like Asia and have enjoyed playing in this part of the world over the years. This spring I was in Indonesia and Thailand and played well at both tournaments.

"The Venetian Macau Open is one of the most prestigious events on the Asian Tour and I hope I will be holding the famous trophy aloft come Sunday," he said.

Els, known as the "Big Easy", recently accepted an invitation to become an honorary member and international ambassador of the Asian Tour.

Golf Association of Macau president Charles Lo said, "Ernie Els is a true champion who is well respected around the world with a graceful style and classy attitude.

"Aspiring young golfers can learn a lot from Ernie's behaviour both on and off the course and I hope our upcoming players will take advantage of this opportunity to learn from the great man."

The 2013 Venetian Macau Open takes place from October 17-20. Previous winners include Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie. - AFP, July 31, 2013.

Sexuality under the microscope in Showtime’s ‘Masters of Sex’ series

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 07:50 PM PDT

July 31, 2013

The sexual revolution has been well-documented on TV shows like HBO's "Sex and the City," but a new Showtime drama "Masters of Sex" turns the lens on the pioneering couple who started the public conversation about sexuality.

The show, which premieres on Sept 29, explores the early relationship of groundbreaking sex researchers Virginia Johnson and William Masters. It documents their discoveries based on Thomas Maier's 2009 biography "Masters of Sex."

Johnson, who died last week at age 88, met Masters when she was a researcher for him at Washington University in St. Louis in the 1950s. Masters, who died in 2001, was a physician at the university and had begun researching sex in 1954.

British actor Michael Sheen, who plays Masters, said he was drawn to both the complexity of his character and the subject matter of researching sexual behaviour at a time when talk of sex publicly was considered taboo.

"(Masters) is sort of a mystery to himself. He has so many locked rooms inside himself and he has to tread very carefully to make sure he controls his environment," Sheen said at a Television Critics Association meeting in Beverly Hills yesterday.

The show features many explicit scenes of sex, both in and out of medical settings, but Sheen said it explores topics far beyond just sexual gratification, and also resonates with the issues around the subject today.

"It doesn't matter if we know a lot more about sex or have more access to it now. It's the same problems with intimacy and dealing with people, of connecting and being vulnerable with other people, which is ultimately what the show is all about," the actor said.

Masters and Johnson, who married in 1971 and divorced after 20 years, were best known for their 1966 book "Human Sexual Response," written after years of testing of sexual arousal in couples. They published a second study, "Human Sexual Inadequacy," in 1970 and often appeared on talk shows and other programmes to discuss their research even after their divorce.

"Masters of Sex" creator Michelle Ashford said she was eager to explore the couple's own relationship.

"Their story just needed to be told. No one really knew what they did, but they were instrumental in the historical movement of not only how we viewed sex but how we viewed men, women and society," Ashford said.

Sheen added that having the show on cable network Showtime allowed them to explore the topic of sex with more freedom than on conventional broadcast television channels, which are regulated by federal rules restricting nudity and graphic content.

On cable, "any subject matter is open to you, you can take risks and you've got 12 hours roughly per season to go into it ... you can start to treat characters with the complexity that they deserve," he said. – Reuters, July 31, 2013.

Robin Williams brings crazy moments to new CBS show

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 05:45 PM PDT

July 31, 2013

The freewheeling improvised comedy that made Robin Williams a star on 1970s sitcom "Mork & Mindy" will be on display in his new CBS comedy "The Crazy Ones," though the actor says the series will deliver a character that audiences relate to.

Returning to TV for the first time since "Mork" went off the air in 1982, Williams will play an eccentric advertising executive who employs unorthodox methods to win and keep clients. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the straight-laced daughter who battles to keep him from going too far.

Williams said his character takes chances, and he hopes audiences will be drawn to his successes and failures as well as the relationship with his daughter.

"You have to establish a character that people buy into," Williams told reporters at a Television Critics Association meeting in Beverly Hills. "I think people will buy into not just my character but the relationship with everybody else. He has good ideas and bad ones."

Producer David E. Kelley, known for television hits like "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal," said Williams sticks to the script but also is given the freedom to add his own take.

"He says my words perfectly," Kelley said. "Then he uses his. He manages inside the box, then we give him a few takes where he gets to take out of it."

After playing the wildly comic space alien Mork, Williams built a successful career in movies, performing in comedies, dramas, big Hollywood flicks and low-budget art house films. He won an Oscar in 1998 for his role in "Good Will Hunting" and has been nominated three other times.

"The Crazy Ones," which premieres Sept 26, is one of a handful of new shows CBS will air to plug the holes in its top-rated primetime lineup. The network is riding a stable of megahits, including crime drama "NCIS" and comedies "The Big Bang Theory" and "Two and a Half Men." It is bringing back 20 shows, more than any of its competitors.

"Crazy Ones" will include real-life companies as clients, such as McDonald's, which is featured in the first episode. The hamburger chain did not pay for the appearance and did not give approval to the script, executive producer Jason Winer said.

Geller said acting alongside Williams offered her a new challenge.

"It's like when my three-year-old says something really inappropriate, and it's really funny but I can't laugh," she said. "That's kind of like working with Robin." – Reuters, July 31, 2013.

Inca child sacrifice victims high, study on mummies reveal

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 08:20 PM PDT

July 31, 2013

Researchers revealed yesterday that drugs and alcohol played a key part in Inca practice of child sacrifice.

Tests on three Inca child mummies found atop a 20,000-foot volcano in Argentina  show that the children consumed increasing amounts of cocaine and corn beer for up to a year before they were sacrificed, stated the researchers in a paper published in the Proceedings of ther National Academy of Sciences

Sedation by the drugs and alcohol combined with the frigid, high-altitude setting may explain how the children were killed. There is no evidence for direct violence, the researchers noted.

The drug and alcohol consumption rises about six months before death and then skyrockets in the final weeks, especially for the eldest, a 13-year-old girl known as the "Ice Maiden."

"She was probably heavily sedated by the point at which she succumbs to death," Andrew Wilson, an archaeologist at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom and the study's lead author, told NBC News, in an MSN report.

The finding is based on detailed analyses of hair taken from the more than 500-year-old mummified remains, which also include a four-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy. The boy and girl were perhaps the maiden's attendants.

The data corroborate earlier research showing the children ate more meat and corn in their final year. Taken together, the studies suggest the peasant children were selected for the ritual sacrifice and lived a high-status life until their death near the top of the Llullaillacao Volcano in Argentina, Wilson said.

Dr Emma Brown, from the department of archaeological sciences at the University of Bradford, told The BBC: "The Spanish chroniclers suggest that children were sacrificed for all kinds of reasons: important life milestones in the lives of the Incas, in times of war or natural disasters, but there was a calendar of rituals too."

Like They Are Asleep

The mummified remains were discovered in 1999, entombed in a shrine near the summit of the 6,739m-high Llullaillaco volcano in Argentina.

Three children were buried there: a 13-year-old girl, and a younger boy and girl, thought to be about four or five years old.

Their remains date to about 500 years ago, during the time of the Inca empire, which dominated South America until the Europeans arrived at the end of the 15th Century.

"The preservation is phenomenal. These three children look like they are asleep."

The international team of researchers used forensic tests to analyse the chemicals found in the children's hair.

They discovered that all three had consumed alcohol and coca leaves (from which cocaine is extracted) in the final months of their lives.

Historical records reveal that these substances were reserved for the elite and often used in Incan rituals.

Death from exposure

An analysis of the teenage girl's hair, which was longer than the hair of the younger victims, revealed more.

The girl, known as the "Llullaillaco maiden", was probably considered more highly valued than the younger children, because of her virginal status.

"In the case of the maiden, there is no sign of violence. She is incredibly well looked after: she has a good layer of fat, she has beautifully groomed hair, beautiful clothes," Dr Brown told The BBC.

NBC News stated that the Ice Maiden was inside a tomb structure, surrounded by offerings from the four corners of the Inca empire such as seashells, bird feathers, coca and corn. Her head is bowed as if she fell asleep, sedated, and succumbed to the biting cold and thin air as is inevitable at such altitude.

The mummies are now housed in the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology in Salta, Argentina. – July 31, 2013.

Print, web aids help men decide on cancer screening

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 08:02 PM PDT

July 31, 2013

Both print and online tools outlining the possible benefits and harms of prostate cancer screening can help men understand the disease and feel more confident in their screening-related decisions, a new study suggests.

Researchers found, however, that men who had access to those decision aids weren't any more or less likely to be screened in the following year than those who didn't receive extra information.

"We really wanted to develop something that clearly presented both sides of the issue so that men could make an informed decision with regards to whether they wanted to undergo screening," said Kathryn Taylor, who led the new study at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

Last year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), a government-backed panel, recommended against prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests for average-risk men.

Other groups, including the American Urological Association, say men of certain ages should weigh the risks and benefits with their doctors and come to an individual decision about screening.

Data conflict about whether screening saves any lives. It's clearer that treatment after a positive test and biopsy can cause side effects, such as impotence and incontinence, and that some cancers picked up on screening would never have caused symptoms because they are so slow-growing.

Taylor and her colleagues randomly assigned close to 1,900 middle-aged men to receive print or Internet-based prostate cancer decision aids or no extra information.

Both tools contained information on the prostate gland, prostate cancer screening tests and treatment options, as well as prompts to help men define their screening-related values and encouragement to talk about screening with a doctor. The web version also included video testimonials and pop-up definitions of some terms.

Before receiving any information, men in each of the three groups scored an average of 10.4 on an 18-question exam about prostate cancer. One month later, men who had received either print or web decision aids scored a 13.5, versus 11.1 among those in the comparison group.

Those differences shrank slightly but remained a year later, the study team wrote in JAMA Internal Medicine.

One thing that didn't change was the proportion of men who decided to get screened: across study groups, between 45 and 48 percent of participants had a PSA test in the year following the study.

But after receiving decision aids, 60 percent of those in the print group and 52 percent in the web-based group reported a high satisfaction with their screening decisions, compared to 46 percent of the men who received usual care.

Taylor said lingering uncertainty about the PSA test and its potential benefits may have contributed to men continuing to get screened.

"The fact that it's easy to do, the fact that many doctors recommend it or perhaps don't discuss it and just do it, all make it easier to just undergo the test," she told Reuters Health.

Dr. Daniel Reuland from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who co-wrote a commentary published with the study, said it's not obvious the information men took away from the aids helped them make informed decisions about screening.

"I don't think it's clear from the study whether the knowledge that they gained and retained, how clinically important it is and whether it's sufficient to counteract known biases," he told Reuters Health.

"Men overestimate the likelihood that the PSA test is going to benefit them and underestimate the likelihood it's going to harm them."

In a separate study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers led by Linda Squiers at RTI International in Rockville, Maryland, surveyed 1,100 men about the new USPSTF recommendations while they were in draft form.

Although 62 percent of men agreed with the recommendation after reviewing it, only 13 percent intended to follow the new guidelines and not be screened.

Taylor said before going in to see their doctors, men can read up about screening on the USPSTF, National Cancer Institute and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention websites.

"Before undergoing screening, men really should educate themselves about the benefits and limitations," she said - including about all of the tests and procedures that could follow a positive PSA test.

"It's more than just thinking about, should I get this blood test or not?" she said. – Reuters, July 31, 2013.

Guantanamo prisoners clamour for erotic “Fifty Shades Of Grey”

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 05:47 PM PDT

July 31, 2013

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" series of erotic novels are the favourite reading material among former CIA captives held at the Guantanamo detention camp, the Huffington Post quoted an American congressman as saying.

Democratic Representative Jim Moran of Virginia was among congressional delegates who last week toured Camp 7, the top-security facility that holds more than a dozen "high-value" prisoners, including five men charged with plotting the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.

"Rather than the Quran, the book that is requested most by the (detainees) is 'Fifty Shades of Grey.' They've read the entire series in English, but we were willing to translate it," the Huffington Post quoted Moran as saying.

"I guess there's not much going on, these guys are going nowhere, so what the hell."

Moran, who favours shutting down the detention camp on the Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base in Cuba, said he learnt about the book's popularity while touring Camp 7 with the base commander and deputy base commander, the head medical official and the officer in charge of that camp.

Moran's office did not return a call from Reuters. A military spokesman said he could not discuss details of Camp 7, whose inmates were held in secret CIA prisons before being sent to Guantanamo in 2006.

"We don't discuss our high-value detainees except in the most generic terms. Further, we do not discuss the assertions made by members of Congress," said Lieutenant Colonel Samuel House, a spokesman for the prison camp.

Some prisoners are taking part in a hunger strike to protest their indefinite detention.

Journalists are not allowed to visit that part of the detention camp but can tour the other prisons and the library that provides books, magazines and DVDs to all 166 captives.

During a visit last week, Reuters saw an eclectic mix of books in numerous languages, from religious tomes to Star Trek novelisations, Agatha Christie mysteries, stress reduction workbooks and the Greek classic "The Odyssey."

Also on offer is "The Hunger Games," according to a librarian who goes by the nickname Zorro."We have the movie and the book too," he said.

Guantanamo librarians have said in the past that they screen reading material for sexual content, even blacking out photos of scantily clad women in the advertisements in sports magazines. – Reuters, July 31, 2013.

Provokasi-provokasi anti Syiah tanpa henti akhirnya menyebabkan satu lagi jenayah berlaku.

Tepuk dada tanya selera. Yang mana lebih utama? Memerangi jenayah atau menghapuskan Syiah?

Mungkin juga oleh kerana orang Malaysia terlalu sibuk memerangi Syiah menyebabkan jenayah berleluasa? – 31 Julai, 2013.

Why the beauty contest is important

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim founded Malaysia's largest law partnership before focusing on politics. He was a minister in the Abdullah administration, was in Umno, PKR and last in KITA as its president.

The Jabatan Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (JAWI) has made its final decision that the four Muslim girls are prohibited from participating in the Miss Malaysia World 2013 beauty contest.

There's nothing surprising about this considering the condemnation unleashed by Muslim leaders on the poor girls before the decision was made.

If it's any help, I want to express my support for these brave young Malaysians. They should not feel ashamed of what they have done or what they dream of doing. They were not trying to cheat anyone or plunder the nation's wealth. They were just trying to maximise their talents and find a good career, perhaps in modelling or acting.

They want to, and should, maximise their talents. There is nothing shameful in trying to better oneself in an open competition. They must feel gutted for having been denied a golden opportunity perhaps to improve their professional development. They have been denied this by people who have no regard for their welfare.

I am disappointed not just for the girls. I am disappointed with the organisers who "chickened out". I am disappointed with the Bar Council, with Anwar Ibrahim the liberal Islamist, the DAP and those out there who always talk about freedom and living in a free country, but who do nothing and say nothing about defending a very simple principle.

That principle is this: Malaysia is a democracy. It is a country founded on freedom and liberty. If people have forgotten, they should go back to the Proclamation of Independence of our truly great leader Tunku Abdul Rahman.

This issue is not about the beauty contest per se, nor is it about morality and religious values.

It's about living in a society that cherishes personal freedom and liberty. "Freedom has its limits", of course, but those limits must themselves be limited by laws passed by Parliament.

No one else should be allowed to regulate the lives of the people, Muslims included, for to allow this would be to make a mockery of the legislative process and the representatives of the Rakyat. Don't think that advocates of freedom ignore morality, because we value good morality. What is offensive is authoritarian rule exerted under the veneer of religion.

I know some lawyers who will tell you that the Federal Court in the Sulaiman Takrib case ruled that a fatwa is "delegated legislation" and therefore it can be issued by the National Fatwa Committee on a wide range of issues.

I say that the Federal Court is wrong - absolutely wrong - because it did not have the benefit of fuller and more detailed arguments. It did not reflect and contemplate on larger issues. It did not fully consider the legal and constitutional ramifications of its decision.

It did not have the time to discuss fully why the items needed to be spelt out under the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution if the State Assembly (or Fatwa Committee) indeed has unlimited powers to legislate.

The Federal Court did not have the opportunity to hear arguments on the meaning of "personal laws, family laws and Islamic laws" in the larger context of the Constitution where fundamental liberties are sacrosanct. Today, the only way for the Federal Court to revisit the issue is if political leaders, the Bar Council, civil society and beauty pageant organisers are willing to defend our rights as enshrined in the Constitution.

Politicians must want to preserve and protect the principles of the Proclamation of our Independence. In other words, they must want to protect a free country. Obviously they are interested only in paying lip-service.

Today it's shisha smoking, beauty contests, hair salons. Tomorrow we will have prohibitions on women engaging in sports and body-building contests — or even driving. Or we will have prohibitions against men wearing shorts. Maybe music and movies will be the next casualty after that. And the list will go on.

You might think that the issue of the beauty contest is a small one but it is above all a matter of principle. If we give in to this, we will eventually have to give in to even more outrageous things for we will have lost the moral courage to stand up for what is right.

I will check with my friends who are more learned about the law, especially on issue of locus standi, and I may institute legal action against JAWI because I want the Federal Court to revisit this issue.

As I said, this is a matter I consider to be of the utmost importance for the future of Malaysia. And I am not alone on this. - July 31, 2013.
