Malaysian Kitchen promotes local cuisine in Indian capital

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 09:13 PM PDT

April 12, 2014

The Malaysian Kitchen programme, initiated by the ladies association of the Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi to promote the country's food to the expatriate and diplomat community, is fast becoming a favourite.

The choice of food for Malaysian Kitchen this time was Soto, which has rice cubes, potato patty, shredded chicken and peanuts in a tasty chicken broth served with soy sauce.

"The last time, I tried the Nasi Lemak. It was so delicious. So, I decided to try it again this time although I have never tasted this particular dish before," said Cecelia Calder, an Australian expatriate living in New Delhi.

Although she has never eaten soto before, she believes it will be as good as the Nasi Lemak.

"It is a trouble to find good Malaysian food here. So, it's good to try when it is made available," she told Bernama.

Another Australian, Gai Blyth, said she came to know about the Malaysian Kitchen through various networks which expatriates shared in New Delhi.

"It is good to support anyone who is willing to put so much effort in promoting the country's food.

"When you promote your food, you promote your country and it's good to support such efforts," she added.

The response for Malaysian Kitchen has been overwhelming this time, Malaysian High Commission's Minister Counsellor (Economic Affairs), said Aida Safinaz Allias.

"We do it three to four times in a year. The sales has been increasing as we get good response from the expatriate and diplomat community here.

"Apart from generating income for the ladies association, Malaysian Kitchen promotes the country's cuisines such as Nasi Lemak, Nasi Ayam, as well as dishes such as Soto.

"It also, in many ways, helps to bring the Malaysian community here together," she added. – Bernama, April 12, 2014.

Clean cutting boards a must for avoiding E. coli contamination

The results of the investigation confirm what most germophobes already know: hands and cutting boards should be thoroughly washed to avoid contamination, particularly after coming into contact with raw poultry.

Along with hands, cutting boards are among the primary modes of contamination by bacteria, some of which are highly pathogenic. Cooks should be particularly vigilant when preparing poultry meat, which commonly carries the particularly antibiotic-resistant bacteria E. coli.

The rate of contamination was at the heart of a scientific inquiry led by Dr Andreas Widmer of the University Hospital of Basel. For the study, published in the latest issue of the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, the doctor and his research team analysed 298 cutting boards, including 154 from hospital kitchens and 144 from households, before they had been washed. The study took note of which types of meat were prepared on each cutting board: poultry, beef, pork, lamb, game or fish. Twenty pairs of gloves used by hospital kitchen employees to handle raw poultry were also tested.

A bacterial analysis indicated that 6.5% of the cutting boards from hospital kitchens used to prepare raw poultry were contaminated with E. coli. Among the cutting boards from household kitchens, 3.5% carried the bacteria. Researchers also found that 50% of the gloves used by kitchen employees contained E. coli.

Perhaps more surprisingly, the cutting boards used for the preparation of other types of meat and fish showed no evidence of E. coli contamination. In addition, the study found that the country of origin of the meat or poultry was not linked to the presence of E. coli.

For Widmer, the results indicate that "transmission of drug-resistant E. coli occurs both in the hospital and households". The doctor also notes that the findings "emphasise the importance of hand hygiene, not only after handling raw poultry, but also after contact with cutting boards used in poultry preparation".

Cooks take note. The impact is all the more important as home cooks generally follow less drastic hygiene protocols than those working in professional kitchens. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 12, 2014.

Manny Pacquiao eager for decisive win in Bradley rematch

Pacquaio vs Bradley in Las Vegas on Sunday morning (Malaysian time). - AFP graphic, April 11, 2014.Manny Pacquiao wants a decisive victory over Timothy Bradley in their eagerly anticipated welterweight world title rematch Saturday in Las Vegas as he bids to avenge a controversial loss two years ago.

America's Bradley, renowned for his amazing durability, snapped the Philippine icon's 15-fight unbeaten streak with a debatable split decision triumph in their first showdown on June 9, 2012.

The 30-year-old Bradley is out to prove he was deserving of the World Boxing Organization belt he seized that night and has since defended twice.

For Pacquiao, 35, whose loss to Bradley was followed by a sixth-round knockout defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez, it's imperative he prove his unanimous decision victory over Brandon Rios in his only fight of 2013 marked a real rebirth of his ring career.

"This is a 'must-win' situation for us," Pacquiao's Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach said.

Even though Roach and "Pacman" want a clear-cut victory, both said Pacquiao - who has had to fend off talk of retirement - can't go in aiming for a knockout.

Instead, they say he must press his attack consistently, avoiding the fallow minutes that apparently cost him the decision in the first Bradley fight, even though Pacquiao landed more punches and more power punches overall.

"I'm not thinking about a knockout," the Filipino said. "My focus is to throw a lot of punches. I'm going to be aggressive. If the knockout comes, it's a bonus."

Added Roach: "We're looking to win every round, one at a time."

'Manny can punch'

Southpaw Pacquiao, the only man to win world titles in eight weight divisions, staked his claim to boxing's pound-for-pound crown with a spate of impressive knockout victories in 2008 and 2009.

That included a ninth-round stoppage of David Diaz that proved Pacquiao could step up to lightweight and retain his fearsome power.

He went on to stop Oscar de la Hoya in a 2008 welterweight bout, and delivered a spectacular second-round knockout of Britain's Ricky Hatton in 2009.

Later that year, he punished Miguel Cotto en route to a 12th-round technical knockout in another welterweight bout - but Pacquiao hasn't finished off an opponent inside the distance since.

Debate has raged as to whether he has lost his knockout power, or perhaps become too "compassionate" towards opponents after a deepening of his Catholic faith.

"Manny can punch - he does have knockout power," Roach insisted Thursday as the fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena drew near.

If Pacquiao has held back out of compassion for his foes, Roach said he'd likely learned his lesson in his most recent defeats.

In the 2012 loss to Marquez, Pacquiao had the Mexican star on the canvas in the fifth round and in trouble in the sixth before Marquez connected for a stunning one-punch knockout.

Pacquiao, who owns a record 55-5 with two drawn and 38 knockouts, puts that defeat down to "carelessness."

However, it's given Bradley some boasting rights since the American has since edged Marquez in a duel between the last two men to beat Pacquiao.

That win over Marquez followed Bradley's 12-round decision over Ruslan Provodnikov, in which the American absorbed a massive amount of punishment before emerging triumphant.

'Tough guy'

Bradley's durability - on display against Provodnikov - is one reason not to seek a knock-out, Roach said.

"He's a very resilient, tough, tough guy," Roach said.

But Roach believes that Pacquiao has the skill to cope with Bradley's slick movement, and showed against Rios that he can still put together long combinations that will make the difference against the counter-punching Bradley.

"We're using a lot of angles and hopefully that will nullify his defence," Roach said. "We'll set traps, catch him on the ropes - when we have him on the ropes, Manny knows what to do."

And if the chance to knock out Bradley does come, Roach believes Pacquiao will take it without hesitation, fired by Bradley's pre-fight claim that Pacquiao had lost his "killer instinct."

"When we're on the mitts we talk sometimes about strategy and what's going to happen," Roach said.

"He told me one day, 'When I hurt him, this is the combination I'm going to finish him with.'

"I was so happy to hear that." – AFP, April 11, 2014.

Mauritian veteran set to break Roger Milla’s age record

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 08:48 AM PDT

April 11, 2014

Kersley Appou of Mauritania could overtake Cameroon legend Roger Milla this weekend and become the oldest African international footballer.

The 43-year striker with 10 goals from 24 national-team appearances is in an 18-man squad for the opening 2015 Cup of Nations (CAN) qualifier against Mauritania in Nouakchott.

And if Appou starts or comes on as a substitute at the 40,000-seat Stade Olympique in the north-west Africa city, he will overtake 1990 World Cup show-stopper Milla.

The Cameroonian bade farewell to international football at the 1994 World Cup in the United States aged 42 years and 39 days.

Appou turns 44 on April 24, four days after the return match against Mauritania in a tie that gets the ball rolling in a 222-day qualifying competition for Morocco.

However, the Mauritian from the Pamplemousses club has some way to go if he wants to become the oldest international footballer among FIFA member nations.

That distinction belongs to MacDonald Taylor senior from the US Virgin Islands at 46 years and 217 days, according to football statistics foundation RSSSF.

Netherlands beach footballer Roel Liefden holds the FIFA final competition record, playing at 46 years and seven months in the 2013 World Cup, the world governing body confirmed.

The chances of Appou playing are good as he and 23-year-old Gurty Calembe are the only strikers chosen by coach Akbar Patel.

Pamplemousses and Cercle de Joachim form the core of an all-local squad with five players each while Bulgaria-based midfielder Kevin Bru is unavailable.

Lack of practice may hamper the Mauritian Les Dodos, a nickname derived from the now extinct flightless bird that inhabited the island state.

Their last international was a 3-0 friendly defeat away to 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar last September while Mauritania drew 1-1 with Niger in Nouakchott just a month ago.

Almost half the 24-strong Mauritania squad named by French coach Patrice Neveu are locals who featured in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) last January.

Appearing at a CAF competition finals for the first time, the Mauritanians lost 1-0 to the Democratic Republic of Congo, 3-2 to Burundi and 4-2 to Gabon.

Several debutants impressed amid the losses, including midfielder Moulaye Ahmed, better known by his "Bessam" nickname.

A blow for former Niger, Guinea and DR Congo coach Neveu was the withdrawal of striker Dominique da Silva from Egyptian club Zamalek.

Both teams want to improve dismal Nations Cup qualifying records with Mauritania winning only five of 18 home games and Mauritius just four of 45 away matches.

The aggregate winners advance to the second preliminary round, joining 27 other countries in an April 27 Cairo draw. – AFP, April 11, 2014.

Where it all started: Sarajevo and World War I

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 08:57 PM PDT

April 11, 2014

Sarajevo commemorates the 100th anniversary of the assassination Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, and his wife Sophie by 20-year-old Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip in June. – AFP pic, April 11, 2014.Sarajevo is no stranger to conflict, but while the wounds of the Bosnian war's siege are still raw, the city is seeking to cash in on its historical claim as the place where World War I was ignited.

On June 28, 1914, the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife by 20-year-old Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip was the spark that set off the Great War, and the 100th anniversary of that event will be commemorated in Sarajevo.

"There is a huge interest in the period when the centenary will be marked – from tour operators, major media," Sarajevo tourist board spokeswoman Asja Hadziefendic Mesic told AFP.

The Bosnian capital in June will host several historical conferences, as well as concerts, exhibitions, plays and a 'Peace Ride' expected to gather thousands of bikers from around the former Yugoslavia.

In central Sarajevo, where many late 19th-century buildings from the Austro-Hungarian era – including the stunning neo-Moorish National Library that Franz Ferdinand was on his way back from when he was shot – have survived, some local businesses have seized the opportunity.

A 33-year-old woman timed the launch of her World War I-themed boutique hotel "Franz Ferdinand" to coincide with the run-up to the anniversary.

"People know of Sarajevo from its siege in the 1990s and the 1914 assassination, which both attract tourists from the whole world," Emela Burdzovic, a former journalist, told AFP.

While the Great War (1914-1918) was triggered in the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo was not the scene of fighting during that conflict.

It remains scarred however by Bosnia's inter-ethnic conflict (1992-1995) and the 44-month-long siege by Serb forces who heavily bombed the city and killed around 10,000 people.

Burdzovic's hotel is located near the Sacred Heart Cathedral, in an early 20th century building with a weatherworn yellow facade.

A giant portrait of the moustachioed Archduke Ferdinand, with a melancholic gaze and in full military dress, welcomes visitors into the lobby.

The rooms are named after people and places associated with World War I: the murdered royal couple – Franz and his wife Sophie, the assassin Princip, his organisation 'Mlada Bosna' ('Young Bosnia'), as well as some famous battlefields such as Gallipoli and Verdun.

Huge photographs of the conflict's best-known leaders and battles loom over the beds and other decoration includes Great War trivia printed directly on the walls.

Burdzovic was quick to stress that the in-room history lessons were based on "facts only".

A lot of controversy

With the centenary approaching, the archduke's assassination has stirred up passions again across the Balkans, where wildly differing interpretations of history endure.

For Serbs, Princip was a hero wanting to "liberate" them from the Austro-Hungarian occupier, but for Bosnia's Muslims he was a terrorist.

But the debate over the motives behind the assassination that touched off the Great War is good for business, Burdzovic said.

"We have chosen an event which provokes a lot of controversy ahead of the centenary," she said.

The Franz Ferdinand is already fully booked for late June, when the commemoration event will take place.

The young hotelier is not the only one hoping to thrive on Sarajevo's fateful claim to fame but others have opted to play up some more anodyne aspects of Bosnia's 40 years as part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Adnan Smajic named his tearoom "Franz & Sophie" in a homage to, before it ended with the opening shots of the war, what was considered one of the most remarkable royal love stories of the time.

"They are historic figures who left a mark on this city and whose lives brought changes to what was at the time a very traditional and conservative Europe," said the doctor turned tea sommelier.

Franz Ferdinand defied customs and massive court pressure to wed Sophie Chotek, a Bohemian aristocrat of lesser social rank, in what is known as a left-handed marriage.

"All these people who are caught up in ideological disputes should drop by to have a cup of tea and discover that it is possible to talk about that era from another perspective," Smajic added with a smile.

There is however at least one hotel manager around Sarajevo who wants the whole centenary craze to be over and that's Gavrilo Princip himself.

Not the real one – who died in prison months before the end of the war he helped trigger – but his namesake and descendant.

In the small hotel he runs in a Sarajevo suburb, the 61-year-old – whose grandfather was the assassin's brother – let his exasperation show as he picked up his cigarettes and left the room, ruling out any interview.

"Yes, I really am Gavrilo Princip and I don't know how I'm going to get through the year!". – AFP, April 11, 2014.

John XXIII: A tradition-breaking pope like Francis

The canonisations of two popular popes are set to bring hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Rome. – AFP pic, April 11, 2014.Pope John XXIII, who will be made a saint with John Paul II on April 27, surprised many by leading the Catholic Church to more open relations with the world.

When "Good Pope John" became head of the Catholic Church on October 28, 1958 at the age of 77, many thought he would be a simple caretaker.

He had a determined and progressive character, however, inviting comparisons by Vatican watchers to the current reform-minded Pope Francis.

Less than three months after being elected, John XXIII announced preparations for the Second Vatican Council, a rare global gathering of Catholic bishops, which opened in October 1962.

Unnerving the Vatican's powerful conservative arm, he reached out to the people in a famous address to crowds gathered in St Peter's Square which spoke of his desire to bridge the gap between the Church and the faithful.

"All the world is represented here tonight, even the moon hastens close to watch this spectacle. When you head home, hug and kiss your children and tell them: 'This is the hug and kiss of the pope'," he said.

Pope John did not live to see the end of the council, dying on June 3, 1963 of complications linked to stomach cancer less than two months after he wrote the landmark papal encyclical, Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth).

It was addressed "to all men of good will" and not only Catholics, and was in part a reaction to the prevailing political situation in the midst of the Cold War.

The Vatican Council led to major reforms within the church, including greater participation by lay members in the liturgy and the possibility of celebrating mass in languages other than Latin.

"I wish to open the church's window so that we may see what is happening outside and so the world may see what is happening within," John wrote.

His former private secretary, Cardinal Loris Capovilla, said his success lay "in a traditional but dynamic imprint, in the apparent paradox between strict conservatism and evangelical openness."

Arms open to welcome the world

The man who would be pope was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in Sotto il Monte, northern Italy on November 25, 1881.

Ordained in 1904, he was called to Rome in 1921 to head missionary activities in Italy.

Appointed bishop four years later, he began a diplomatic career that took him to Bulgaria, Turkey and France.

He was credited with saving thousands of Jews during World War II, including by giving Hungarian Jews baptismal certificates.

A document on file at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial cites the future pope as being "among the most sensitive to the Jewish tragedy and most vigorous in rescue efforts".

In 1953 he became a cardinal and Patriarch of Venice, and was elected as pope five years later following the death of Pius XII.

As pope he worked hard to improve relations between the Catholic Church and other Christian faiths, notably Anglicans, Eastern Orthodox and Protestants.

Pope John was beatified in August 2000, based on the healing of an Italian nun, sister Caterina Capitani, which was declared a miracle after a medical commission determined there was no scientific explanation for the event.

Capitani had undergone an operation to remove a cancerous tumour in her stomach and was not expected to live, but appeared to suddenly recover after addressing her prayers to Pope John.

He was beatified by then pope John Paul II, who pursued Pope John's outreach to Jews with an historic visit to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem in March 2000.

John Paul II said at the time of John's beatification that he had shown "a singular goodness of soul" and "left in the memory of all the image of a smiling face and two arms open to welcome the entire world". – AFP, April 11, 2014.

Nirvana, KISS among Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Ronstadt, who revealed last year that she is battling Parkinson's disease, will not attend, while neither KISS nor the surviving members of Nirvana – founder Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994 aged 27 – is expected to perform.

That leaves only British singer-songwriters Peter Gabriel and Cat Stevens, and duo Hall and Oates as performing inductees, although Chris Martin, Glenn Frey, Michael Stipe, Questlove, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Asher and Tom Morello are set to appear – though not necessarily perform.

Stevens, who goes by the name Yusuf Islam, was confirmed just days ago after the folk singer had trouble securing a visa to travel from London. His induction, he wrote in the current issue of Rolling Stone, "will no doubt do much to heal the scars that many years of separation have caused and help to reconnect people to my legacy, which still speaks loud and clear in my music".

And it could signal a return to the spotlight for the "Wild World", "Peace Train" and "Moon Shadow" singer after decades of not performing.

Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Carrie Underwood, Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow will appear in a musical tribute to Ronstadt, who is being inducted by Frey at the 29th annual ceremony, to be aired on HBO on May 31.

Stipe will induct Nirvana, which was chosen in its first year of eligibility, 20 years after founder Cobain's death.

Gabriel, 63, lead vocalist for the progressive rock band Genesis, itself a 2010 inductee, went on to a solo career that included hits such as "Sledgehammer", and is set to perform.

The E Street Band, the group behind Springsteen, will be inducted by the rocker through the Award for Musical Excellence, and will perform, but the Hall of Fame has not formally announced whether The Boss himself would sing.

As for KISS, the 1970s shock-rockers known for their outrageous costumes and makeup and hits such as "Rock and Roll All Nite", founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have said they won't perform at the gala because the Hall of Fame opted to include only the original members, eschewing current bandmembers Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer.

In past years the Hall of Fame has included varying mixes of past and present members of bands like The Grateful Dead and Metallica which have had evolving rosters.

The fray recalled the 2007 ceremony when original Blondie members Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison made an on-stage entreaty to lead singer Debbie Harry to perform with the band, and were flatly, and awkwardly, turned down by the star.

Brian Epstein, the music entrepreneur who managed The Beatles before he died in 1967, and Andrew Loog Oldham who managed The Rolling Stones, will both be inducted with the Ahmet Ertegun Awards for lifetime achievement.

But Oldham said on Twitter last week that he would not attend. "Like Brian Epstein, I was not consulted as regards this matter," he said, "& like dear Brian I will not be going."

The inductees, who will join the Hall of Fame's 719 other musicians and executives as members, were chosen by more than 700 voters from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

Fans were allowed to cast votes online for the artists they believe were the most deserving of induction, with three of their top five choices making the cut this year. – Reuters, April 11, 2014.

Comic Colbert to succeed US late-night icon Letterman

The announcement came after Letterman said he would step down next year, and follows the departure of rival veteran Jay Leno as host of "The Tonight Show".

Colbert, 49, who has presented the award-winning The Colbert Report satirical show since 2005, paid tribute to Letterman as a model that other late-night hosts look up to.

"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," he said. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead.

"I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth," he said, referring to Letterman's gap-toothed smile.

Letterman, 66, a pillar of American late-night TV talk shows, announced last week that he will leave his "Late Show" studio at CBS next year after a 22-year run.

Colbert – who got into hot water recently over offensive language about Asian Americans – has agreed to a five-year deal with CBS, starting after Letterman stands down some time in 2015.

"Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television," said CBS boss Leslie Moonves.

"David Letterman's legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today's announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night."

Before launching The Colbert Report, Colbert spent eight years as a correspondent on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart, which has won 19 Primetime Emmy awards.

On The Colbert Report, which has won four Primetime Emmys, Colbert plays a parody of an ultra-conservative talk show host, although he himself is widely perceived as liberal.

Right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh lambasted CBS's decision to put Colbert in charge of a US media-cultural institution.

"CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America," he said. "No longer is comedy going to be a covert assault on traditional American values... Now it's just wide out in the open."

Letterman's announcement last week was the latest in a merry-go-round of changes bringing a younger generation of hosts to the fore in the US late-night landscape.

In February, 39-year-old Jimmy Fallon took over at NBC's "The Tonight Show" after Letterman's long-time rival Leno, 63, announced his departure.

"Saturday Night Live" star Seth Meyers is NBC's new talk-show hope at 12.30am, inheriting Fallon's old time slot.

The changes have also involved some geographical rivalry: Leno taped "The Tonight Show" in Los Angeles, but the show moved to New York with Fallon.

That left Jimmy Kimmel as the only major late-night host still on the West Coast. Letterman also tapes in New York.

But tellingly, CBS did not specify where the Colbert "Late Show" will be made, saying the location "will be determined and announced at a later date".

Letterman's "Late Show" is famous for Letterman's witty repartee with A-list celebrity guests, his satirical top-10 lists and a raft of regular features including a segment dedicated to clever animals called Stupid Pet Tricks.

Colbert triggered a firestorm on social media last month after attacking the owner of the Washington Redskins, who refuses to change the American football team's name, which is considered derogatory by many Native Americans.

Colbert stressed that his over-the-top jibes were meant as parody. – AFP, April 11, 2014.

New book details one family’s sugar-free year

The experience was a positive one overall, as the author recounts in her new memoir "Year of No Sugar", published in the US this week.

In a world full of processed foods, added sugar is everywhere. No longer limited to desserts and breakfast cereals, added sugar has made its way to virtually every aisle of the supermarket and can be found in baby food, condiments, savoury sauces and even cold cuts. But it is possible to avoid sugar, as the Schaub family learned.

Eve Schaub, who lives in Vermont with her cat and her five chickens, embarked upon her "Year of No Sugar" in 2011, along with her husband and her two daughters, aged six and eleven at the time.

The mother of two was inspired – or rather, alarmed – by the work of the pediatric endocrinologist Robert Lustig, who compares fructose to a poison, particularly for children. Judged to be responsible for an increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes, excess sugar consumption has also been linked to certain kinds of cancer and heart disease, Schaub learned.

Over the course of one year, the family learned how to identify added sugar in its various forms on food labels. Eventually, the Schaubs found ways to avoid sugar without drastically changing their diet. For example, the family switched from store-bought to homemade for a number of dishes, such as mayonnaise and bread. In her book and her blog, Eve Schaub shares recipes and tips on how to dine out and shop while eliminating added sugar.

And even after just one year, the efforts paid off. "We felt healthier, it seemed like we got sick less, like we got better faster or got milder colds. My kids missed significantly less school," the author told the Huffington Post in an interview. She specifies that no one lost weight, but that this was not one of the family's goals. "I'm not a doctor, I'm not a nutritionist. I'm a mum who decided to go on an adventure," Schaub explains.

Today, two years after the end of the experiment, Schaub says she and the rest of the family still have "more sensitive palates and a more subtle appreciation for sweetness" than before. Desserts in the household are small, infrequent and almost always homemade. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 11, 2014.

Sue Townsend, creator of Adrian Mole series, dies at 68

April 11, 2014

Sue Townsend (pic), the British author responsible for the multi-million selling Adrian Mole series documenting the hum-drum life of an awkward teenager, has died aged 68, her son told the BBC today.

According to the broadcaster, her son Danny Townsend confirmed that the novelist had died at home yesterday after a short illness.

After writing a series of well-received plays, Townsend was catapulted to mainstream fame when she released "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 ¾" in 1982.

Within three years, the book had sold close to two million copies and was followed in 1984 by "The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole", which helped her to become Britain's top-selling author of the 1980s.

"Adrian Mole: The Prostrate Years", the last of the eight-part series, was released in 2009.

Townsend, who was born in the central England city of Leicester in 1946, lost her sight after being diagnosed with diabetes in the 1980s.

She underwent a kidney transplant in 2009, with her eldest son Sean donating one of his organs, and suffered a stroke over Christmas 2012. – April 11, 2014.

Sebelum ini didera ibu bapa, kini mereka didera mahkamah Sweden

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 05:04 PM PDT

April 11, 2014

Sebabnya pelaksanaan undang-undang jangan sampai mendera si anak.

Keadilan dalam Islam bukan menghukum sahaja, tetapi termasuk tidak menzalimi yang tidak bersalah.

Bagi keadilan Sweden, anak tadi dua kali didera. Pertama didera ibunya. Kedua didera mahkamah. – 11 April, 2014.

Only one team to avoid in Champions League semis

Posted: 10 Apr 2014 03:50 PM PDT

April 11, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

All said and done, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid deserve to be the semi-finalists of this edition of the UEFA Champions League.

How they got there can be debated long into the night, but they were quite simply ruthless and clinical in how they performed over two legs.

The atmosphere at the Vicente Calderon was unlike any other. Atleti were calm, composed and steady with an air of confidence usually reserved for sides like FC Barcelona.

Playing without star striker Diego Costa did not weaken them. The absence of Arda Turan made no difference whatsoever. The maestro conducted the orchestra.

Surely, for what has been achieved, Diego Simeone deserves a medal. He could yet end up empty handed but Atleti go into the semi-final draw as the team to avoid.

A sidenote, Leo Messi looked curiously sluggish and out of shape. Shades of Ronaldinho in his latter days at Barca? Let's hope not.

At the Allianz Arena in Munich, time stood still as Wayne Rooney missed his lines by completely scooping Danny Welbeck's cutback wide.

One of those moments that tell you how careless you have been when the necessary sharpness of mind and limb go awry.

Being the highest paid footballer in Manchester United history, his finishing on the night was akin to a lower league centre-forward – capable of goals, but far more capable of gaffes.

Patrice Evra's strike was something to behold, but his defending for Bayern's first and second less impressive.

The German champions eventually played Manchester United to a standstill, but it certainly was hard work.

Pep Guardiola can be pleased with the manner in which his side came from behind, though surely he will expect more consistency and ruthlessness in the remaining matches. Will Bayern Munich want to avoid Atletico Madrid and Chelsea in the semis? You bet!

Two teams that can defend deep and defend well with more guile than Manchester United, Bayern will hope they get the more open Real Madrid.

Besides, the epic battles between both sides in previous European competitions have the potential of being topped this season, Carlo Ancelotti offering up a Real Madrid side openly embracing their traditional high-intensity, fast-pressing attacking roots.

Spain's Los Blancos looked ponderous at times against a rejuvenated Borussia Dortmund, but will thank their lucky stars at making the hat for the draw.

Real, too, will want to avoid their Madrid neighbours and their former coach over at Stamford Bridge.

No prizes for guessing which team Jose Mourinho would love to face. A chance to put one over your former team is the kind of challenge that Jose always relishes.

Finally, Chelsea resorted to power play and bashed PSG into submission. Taking the long ball route in the latter stages of the game paid dividends for Chelsea. And PSG proved once again that good players don't necessarily make a team good!

Roll on 6pm and the draw for the Champions League semi-finals! Tune in to Astro SupertSport (810, 831) for the live telecast of the draw from Nyon, Switzerland. – April 11, 2014.

– Bernama, 11 April, 2014.

Pemuda Umno Selangor gesa SPRM siasat Khalid berhubung jualan tanah

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 04:06 AM PDT

April 11, 2014

– Bernama, 11 April, 2014.
