The perfect blend at Roast FactorGlee

An industrial feel at the Roast FactorGlee. – April 26, 2014.An industrial feel at the Roast FactorGlee. – April 26, 2014.Roast FactorGlee is an all-day breakfast and tea place with an industrial feel and look. It's cosy and welcoming and Tan Shyue Chin, the owner, baker and barista is friendly and informative without being intrusive.  She used to live and work in Panama where she fell in love with coffee.

Now Shyue Chin sources single origin coffee beans, roasts, grinds and makes the coffee. This was also the first thing we ordered. She had recommended the Colombia Cauca and the Rwanda Inzovu. "It's a bronze medallist," she said of the Rwanda Inzovu. "It's clean cut, with a good body and with jasmine and vanilla notes."  Of the Colombia Cauca we got the semi-sweet caramel and floral notes she pointed out but was it hard to detect the tomato hints.  But we liked this one better than the Rwanda Inzovu.

It was 4pm, and we were peckish. And from the menu handwritten on brown paper bags on the counter we picked the Ham Basket with two organic eggs and mini baguette, Baked Eggs with Dill and Smoked Back Bacon and Bread Face, which has brioche, baguette and rundstykker (round Danish bun) served with homemade jam and butter.

The Crinkle Cookie, of dark chocolate and cranberries. – April 26, 2014.The Crinkle Cookie, of dark chocolate and cranberries. – April 26, 2014.The way the Ham Basket was done was quite ingenious. It had French ham shaped into a cup holding the organic egg with a little cream in it, and a slice or two of jalapeno. I loved it, the soft egg colliding and the yolk bursting against the crispy, salty ham, with a hot, tingly sensation from the chilli.  The two Ham Baskets came with a mini baguette baked in-house, which was crusty, chewy and nice.

The Baked Eggs with Dill and Smoked Back Bacon was mild and creamy. It had sour cream, yoghurt and cooking cream in it. It was served with a mini baguette too. I wish we had some good French butter instead of the Danish one to go with it.

We had an amazing rhubarb and banana jam with the very nice breads. There were also Cherry Lol (lemon, orange, lime) and Tomato and Strawberry jam which Shyue Chin let us taste. I rather liked the Cherry Lol too with its citrusy flavours. She was also in the midst of making an Apple, Rosemary and Ginger Jam.The moist, rich and lovely Dark Chocolate Pear Almond Cake. – April 26, 2014.The moist, rich and lovely Dark Chocolate Pear Almond Cake. – April 26, 2014.

I was intrigued by the Spice Root Gurls which was like a carrot cake with ginger and virgin coconut oil and a glazed topping with coconut flakes and lime zest on it. The cake was moist, crumbly and delightful.

Even better on another occasion when we dropped by for tea was the Dark Chocolate Pear Almond Cake. Made of almond meal, and studded with pear, it was totally scrumptious. The dark, slightly bitter chocolate was a perfect foil for the sweetness.

We had some scones too but found the texture too bread-like.

Manchester City’s Pellegrini relaxed over Chelsea team selection

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 08:21 AM PDT

April 25, 2014

Manchester City are not counting on any favours from Chelsea when they play Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday and must concentrate on their own performance against Crystal Palace, manager Manuel Pellegrini (pic) said today.

City, who are six points behind leaders Liverpool but have a game in hand, are hoping for a Chelsea victory at Anfield to revive their diminishing title chances.

Second-placed Chelsea, five points behind the leaders with three games to play, host Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday and manager Jose Mourinho has said he may play a weakened team against Liverpool to keep senior players fresh.

"I don't know what Chelsea are going to do – the only important thing we can do is to win our game," Pellegrini told reporters today.

"Is it fair? (that Chelsea play a weakened side) I think every team tries to make the best thing for their team. The only important thing for us is to win our game."

Liverpool have won their last 11 games, making them strong favourites to claim their first league title in 24 years, but Pellegrini said City have not given up hope of reclaiming the trophy they won in 2012.

"They (Liverpool) have the best chance to win it but they still have to win their last three games," the Chilean continued.

"Of course we can win the league – everyone working in football knows anything can happen when the pressure is high."

City, whose match against Crystal Palace kicks off two hours after the table-topping clash at Anfield, travel to Selhurst Park to play a side that have won their last five league matches.

Pellegrini will be boosted by the return of 22-goal midfielder Yaya Toure, who has missed City's last two matches with a muscle injury, but fellow midfielders David Silva and Jesus Navas are out with ankle injuries.

"It will be a very difficult game," added Pellegrini. "We will have play well if we want to win.

"Tony Pulis is doing a very good job – Palace have been one of the best teams in the second half of the season and I congratulate him." – Reuters, April 25, 2014.

I’ve never slept better, says Liverpool manager Rodgers

Posted: 25 Apr 2014 08:15 AM PDT

April 25, 2014

Liverpool are feeling no pressure despite being three games away from the club's first English league championship in 24 years, manager Brendan Rodgers (pic) said today.

Five points ahead of Sunday's visitors Chelsea and six clear of Manchester City, who have played one game fewer, Liverpool are hot favourites to win the Premier League for the first time, after finishing only seventh last season.

"People talk about pressure but it's absolutely wonderful," Rodgers told reporters.

"I haven't slept better. It's why we work, and whatever happens we'll have had a brilliant season."

Having beaten City 3-2 a fortnight ago, Liverpool have now been helped by Chelsea having to contend with two Champions League semi-final matches and threatening to field a weakened side at Anfield.

Rodgers sympathises, saying that City suffered when they had to play four days after the Liverpool defeat and could only draw with bottom club Sunderland.

"There is a cost if Chelsea play the same team on Sunday and Wednesday," he said.

"You saw that with Manchester City. On the Wednesday they played Sunderland and had a real cost. Jose won't want to go down that route."

Rodgers, a former Chelsea coach who worked under Mourinho at the club, nevertheless added that it would be "hugely disrespectful" to any players brought in who were deemed to be weaker ones.

"Chelsea are an outstanding team with lots of good players and a world-class manager," he said. "Whatever team they put out will be more experienced than ours. Jose is a winner who won't give up (on the title).

"We know it's a significant game yet again but if you look over the course of the games and our last 11, there's been lots of significant games in there that we've won.

"It's another big hurdle for us but it's what it is, it's the three points at the end of it."

Liverpool will assess the fitness of former Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge over the weekend.

He suffered a hamstring strain against City and missed the last game at Norwich, in which Liverpool recorded their 11th successive win, scoring 38 goals in the process. – Reuters, April 25, 2014.

Scientists reverse memory loss in mice with Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer's, caused by toxic proteins that destroy brain cells, is the most common form of dementia. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, April 25, 2014.Alzheimer's, caused by toxic proteins that destroy brain cells, is the most common form of dementia. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, April 25, 2014.Spanish scientists have for the first time used gene therapy to reverse memory loss in mice with Alzheimer's, an advance that could lead to new drugs to treat the disease, they said Wednesday.

The Autonomous University of Barcelona team injected a gene which causes the production of a protein that is blocked in patients with Alzheimer's into the hippocampus – a region of the brian essential to memory processing – in mice that were in the initial stages of the disease.

"The protein that was reinstated by the gene therapy triggers the signals needed to activate the genes involved in long-term memory consolidation," the university said in a statement.

Gene therapy involves transplanting genes into a patient's cells to correct an otherwise incurable disease caused by a failure of one or another gene.

The finding was published in The Journal of Neuroscience and it follows four years of research.

"The hope is that this study could lead to the development of pharmaceutical drugs that can activate these genes in humans and allow for the recovery of memory," the head of the research team, Carlos Saura, told AFP.

Alzheimer's, caused by toxic proteins that destroy brain cells, is the most common form of dementia.

Worldwide, 35.6 million people suffer from the fatal degenerative disease, which is currently incurable, and there are 7.7 million new cases every year, according to a 2012 report from the World Health Organisation.

In 2010 the total global societal cost of dementia was estimated to be US$604 billion, according to Alzheimer's Disease International, a federation of Alzheimer associations around the world. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 25, 2014.

South Korean officials feel heat of ferry tragedy

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 06:03 PM PDT

April 25, 2014

A boy holding a white chrysanthemum pays tribute at a temporary group memorial altar for victims of capsized passenger ship Sewol, in Ansan yesterday. – Reuters pic, April 25, 2014.A boy holding a white chrysanthemum pays tribute at a temporary group memorial altar for victims of capsized passenger ship Sewol, in Ansan yesterday. – Reuters pic, April 25, 2014.In the hothouse atmosphere of anger and grief triggered by South Korea's ferry tragedy, the slightest misstep or ill-timed remark by any official can carry career-ending consequences.

The heavy death toll, and the fact that so many of those who died were children, has fuelled a desire for retribution that has taken on a distinctly anti-establishment flavour.

Aside from obvious targets like the captain and crew and the ferry owners, public anger has been directed at pretty much anyone in a position of power or influence.

There is a general consensus that the ferry sinking has pulled back the covers of the country's great economic success story and revealed a corrupt, incompetent body politic which allows such disasters to happen.

The first clear indication of the volatile mood came when South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-Won visited anguished relatives of the missing the morning after the 6,825-tonne Sewol capsized and sank.

In the gymnasium where the families were sheltering in Jindo island, Chung was jostled, pushed and shouted at, while some people threw water bottles at him.

"Don't run away, Mr Prime Minister!" said one irate mother, blocking Chung as he tried to leave.

The anger was not so much with Chung personally but with the idea that not enough was being done and that he represented the responsible authority.

The frustration of the families was mirrored in the wider public and fuelled by the media, with a flood of agonised, introspective editorials questioning what the disaster said about what the country had come to and where it was going.

With emotions sky-high and the language of blame getting harsher by the day, it quickly became clear there would be no quarter given to anyone perceived as speaking or acting out of place – even indirectly.

Chung Mong-Joon, a veteran lawmaker who is running for Seoul mayor this year, felt forced to make a live TV apology after his son wrote a Facebook post criticising the "uncivilised" behaviour of the bereaved relatives in jostling the prime minister and, on a later occasion, heckling President Park Geun-Hye.

"I am deeply sorry for my son's childish behaviour," Chung said, after the post prompted an apoplectic public backlash.

Next came Song Young-Chul, a director-level official at the ministry tasked with disaster response, who posed for a picture in front of a bulletin board listing the names of the dead.

He was spotted and confronted by angry relatives, and ended up offering his resignation – which, given the tinderbox atmosphere, was immediately accepted.

Education Minister Seo Nam-Soo, meanwhile, was twice accused of inappropriate behaviour: once indirectly after an aide was deemed to have made too much of the minister's imminent arrival at a funeral for one of the many students killed in the ferry capsize.

On another occasion he was slammed after a picture emerged of him eating cup noodles while sitting on a chair in the gymnasium on Jindo island where the relatives have been camping out for the past week.

Seo was sharply criticised for using a chair while the relatives were sleeping on the floor.

"It became a problem because it was an armchair and it was photographed and because of the prevailing public sentiment," presidential Blue House spokesman Min Kyung-Wook told reporters.

Meanwhile, a senior coastguard official was sacked for suggesting the coastguard had done well to rescue 80 people from the ferry before it sank.

"His comment could hurt the families of the victims," the coastguard said in a statement announcing his dismissal.

Of the 476 people on board the Sewol, only 174 managed to escape. As of yesterday the confirmed death toll stood at 171, with 131 still missing.

And a senior government official in Busan city lost his job after going ahead with a "reward trip" to Turkey, despite a general order for all civil servants to avoid any junkets at a time of national mourning. – AFP, April 25, 2014.

Local Bhangra group has earned recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) for emerging as the first Sikh group to produce a Malaysian Bhangra album and first Southeast Asian group to sing in a Bollywood Film (in 2011), besides going international by performing at the Asian Music Awards (AMA) last year at Wembley Stadium, London.

The MBR certificate was presented to the group by MBR managing director Datuk Danny Ooi witnessed by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad today.

Nazri in his speech said Malaysians could take pride in their achievements. "The government will give its full backing to those who bring glory for the country," he said. – Bernama, April 25, 2014.

A hilarious take on Malaysia’s melting pot of… cendol

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 07:53 PM PDT

BY NICK CHOO
April 25, 2014

The lives of three friends – Chan, Mat and Sugi – are changed when Mona, a former Miss Pesta Pulau Pinang, enters their lives. As they compete for her affections, all hell breaks loose when Mona persuades them to get her a bowl of cendol.

How far are these guys willing to go in the pursuit of one woman's affections-and what's the worst that could happen when three senior citizens take matters into their own hands and attempt a prison break out of an old folks' home guarded by an obnoxious caretaker and her foreign lover?

Such is the hilarious scenario that will unfold in "Mission Possible: The Last Cendol", a comedy written by Fa Abdul and directed by Kent Tan, which will be staged at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) and Penang Performing Arts Centre (PenangPAC) next month.

Tan inspired the story when he had to send his own father to a nursing home due to health issues. He shared his ideas with Fa, who helped develop the content into a full script.

"It's a play for all generations," explains Fa, who won Best Newcomer in KLPAC's Short+Sweet Theatre Festival in 2012 and whose plays also won in various categories the following year.

"It's not about growing old alone in a sad old folks' home, it is about getting a second chance in life.

"Everyone struggles in life in their own way, and each of us is waiting for a chance to live life the way we want to. However, chances never just pop out of thin air-we have to create them and have the courage to grab them. That's what this show is about," she says, in reference to her intrepid trio of house-(out) breakers. "Nothing is impossible if we set our hearts to it."

The Last Cendol will include dance and musical moments set to the rhythms of K-pop, Hindustan and P.Ramlee, and will be performed in Manglish, Malay, Cantonese, Tamil and Penang Hokkien.

"Being an Indian Muslim girl who grew up with an identity crisis-trying to fit into the Malay community but having come from culturally strong Indian roots and brought up in a Chinese village in Penang, I certainly had no problems showcasing the multicultural aspects of the characters," Fa laughs.

As for the language barrier? There wasn't one. "I speak Malay, English and Tamil, while Kent speaks Hokkien, so we were able to deliver what we wanted."

Among the show's stars is Hilda Looi, a fellow Penangite who plays the manipulative Mona. "She's a single mother who now finds it difficult to accept that her son has grown up and has his own family," she says.

"Being an independent woman she has developed wits and a strong character, which she uses to get what she wants. Mona eventually realises she will not have a good life in the home, and hatches a plan to get out after noticing the men's interest in her."

Looi believes the play will entertain and touch hearts. "It's a true-to-life story, with simple language, and it will allow the audience to realise what can happen in an old folks' home, and why children should re-think checking their parents into such homes."

The Last Cendol will also serve a greater purpose than making people laugh and think. Bowls of Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul will be on sale before the show, and all proceeds will be channelled to Pusat Kebajikan Rumah Grace, Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged and Pusat Jagaan Sejahtera.

As for Fa's personal favourite cendol place, the award goes to Kulim Famous Cendol. "It's the stall by the roadside of Taman Bersatu in Kulim, Kedah," she says. "The proportion of coconut milk and brown sugar is just right, and they add steamed pulut (glutinous rice), which makes it A-mazing!"

"Mission Possible: The Last Cendol" will be staged at Pentas 2, KLPAC (www.klpac.org) from May 1-4 and at PenangPAC (www.penangpac.org) from May 8-11. For tickets, call 03-4047 9000 (KL), 04-899 2722 (Penang), or visit www.ticketpro.com.my. – April 25, 2014.

One message for President Obama

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 05:19 PM PDT

April 25, 2014

Rushdi believes that a change agent must tell the truth to a benevolent dictator, religious hardliner, and compassionately connect with youth and have nots.

Let's hope President Obama's visit to Malaysia is not just about photo-ops and the continued commitment to the warm and fuzzy feel-good bi-lateral relationship.

The Pacific Partnership Agreement will be discussed, as well as issues relating to the economy, defence, education and entrepreneurship; hence, there is no need for me to repeat what others will say more eloquently. I'll confine my remarks to my observations of Malaysia during my 15 years of travel to this truly remarkable country!

Let's assume, unfortunately, that the next US President will come to Malaysia in 48 years. President Lyndon Johnson last visited in 1966, hence there must be a far-reaching single political message to convey to President Obama to take back home. I'm not sure what economic and financial message Malaysia can convey to the leader of the world's largest economy and home of the largest capital market. (I do hope the message of Islamic finance is conveyed to him and his staff in a manner that is informative – avoiding the credit crisis l and ll – and not cheerleading. I also hope the message of the halal industry, as the next BRICS story, is conveyed to him by the Halal Development Corporation as the US is the largest exporter of meats and live animals to the Muslim world. Source: Dinarstandard/Thomson Reuter.)

One message

Many will want his ear, and he will listen to many suggestions intently, but will hear and personally take away one or two suggestions per country visit.

I suspect President Obama is looking to find peace of mind politics after last few months, and this trip may allow him to re–energise himself to the Barak Obama of 2008!

So keeping the message simple, as messages of that kind have the greatest retention and recall factor down the road, here is the pitch to President Obama by a US citizen who is a friend of Malaysia.

The US may now be looking for a role model Muslim country with which America can do business with minimal domestic political push-back. Malaysia is a secular, democratic, multi-ethnic multi-cultural country that has "peace". Some Malays and Malaysians may disagree, but it's all relative to what's happening in the other 56 Muslim countries (OIC).

Malaysia is not Turkey, Saudi Arabia or Indonesia, all G20 countries, as the country's aspirations are higher. It has a unique history and heritage and has become an intellectual anchor in leading the Asean region.

Malaysia is not Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt or Nigeria, OIC countries with large populations and often mentioned as growth stories. It is more stable and aspires to be a high income country by 2020, led by a knowledge-based economy.

Furthermore, Malaysia is a leader within the OIC on a number of fronts, including recognition and relationship with Iran and Sudan, hence the additional behind-the-scenes diplomacy that can avoid misunderstandings with lasting consequences.

Finally, many Malaysians study in the UK and Australia, and President Obama and Prime Minister Najib Razak need to work on a framework agreement to bring more Malaysian students to American universities, and likewise more American students to Malaysia with sunset subsidies and grants. These are future leaders in the making, and such cultural exchanges based upon receiving solid education make for good ambassadors.

Mr President, it's time to look further east of the Middle East, from the White House.

I wish you a pleasant stay, Mr President, in Malaysia, which truly is Asia! – April 25, 2014.

Don’t worry, be happy

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 04:09 PM PDT

April 25, 2014

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

I'm currently reading a book entitled "Happy City" by a Canadian writer and geographer named Charles Montgomery. It's about his research into how urban centres can be happy places for people to live in.

I'm not finished reading it yet but one of the first case studies he presents in the book has already made such an impact on me. It's not so much that it opened my eyes, more that it actually legitimises how I've tried to live my life.

Montgomery talks about the city of Bogota in Colombia. It is one of the most dangerous and also most economically challenged cities in the world. One day in 1998, they elected a new mayor by the name of Enrique Penalosa.

He conducted an experiment whereby on February 1st, all private motor vehicles were banned from entering the city. The citizens participated and no one drove. Surprisingly, everyone turned up at work and in school.

They all either took public transportation or walked, and on that day, there were no road accidents, the number of hospital emergency room check-ins decreased tremendously and the citizens of Bogota actually came together for once.

They realised that the thing that made people most unhappy was commuting to work – specifically, driving through traffic to work. So, eventually, the car-free day became a regular affair in the city.

People started enjoying walking to work and being out in the fresh air with everyone else. Soon, parks and public spaces were developed and built all around the city for people to take advantage of.

People started getting happier and happier. Mayor Penalosa also managed to divert the city's budget away from private transport towards education, revitalising the city and also providing running water for the urban poor.

According to Penalosa, the city's financial situation was lagging too far behind from more developed cities like those in the United States, and it was almost impossible to promise people more jobs and better salaries.

And so he decided to make people happy instead of wealthy. And the experiment he conducted was steeped in something called hedonics, an economic philosophy that focused on happiness instead of economic growth.

This is a wonderful concept and I never realised that the way I've prioritised my life all these years has been based on this. I have never chased the big bucks and I have definitely never chased a corporate career.

All I've ever wanted to do is to be happy, and all the decisions I've made in my life have been to make sure that I can continue being happy. Thankfully, because I've been happy in everything that I do, things have worked out well.

This is the one thing I want to instill in my daughter Athena Azlee. I also wish this for all my loved ones, everyone in Kuala Lumpur, and in Malaysia. I'm sure, like the citizens of Bogota, we can all lead happier, more meaningful and content lives.

As for the city of Bogota, the crime rate dropped, air pollution cleared up and traffic deaths reduced tremendously. But most importantly, the people became so happy they forgot all about trying to make money and becoming rich. – April 25, 2014.

Kerajaan Persekutuan sudah lama jangka krisis air akan berlaku, kata Mustapa

Krisis air hingga menyebabkan catuan di kebanyakan kawasan di Selangor menyukarkan penduduk. Gambar fail The Malaysian Insider.Krisis air hingga menyebabkan catuan di kebanyakan kawasan di Selangor menyukarkan penduduk. Gambar fail The Malaysian Insider.

– Bernama, 25 April, 2014.
