Delightful treats at Sao Nam

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 05:03 PM PST

The Beef in Bamboo is a flavourful dish served cunningly on a piece of bamboo.

PETALING JAYA, Dec 24 — The Mangosteen Salad is a must-order at Sao Nam; everyone tells you how awesome it is. It had made its name in the original restaurant in Tengkat Tong Shin in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. Now we were having it in the Sao Nam at the Empire Shopping Galley.

Delicious Duck in Tamarind Sauce.

It had reopened 45 days after the gas explosion in the shopping centre.  Sitting in the pretty and strikingly done up Vietnamese restaurant now, I couldn't imagine how every pane of glass had shattered, including the thick glass on top of each table, as one wait staff told me.

Back to the Mangosteen Salad:  fresh springy tiger prawns are tossed in a sweet and sour dressing whose main ingredients are lime juice and fish sauce. There's fresh grated coconut, crushed roasted peanuts, sesame seeds and crispy fried squid on top, and sweet juicy segments of mangosteen.  On the side is a bunch of sweet basil and a bowl of prawn crackers. Everything comes together in an ambrosiac climax. I loved it that it is so generous with mangosteen. I wonder if this is available when the fruit is off season.

The Grilled Eggplant... yummy!

The Hue Pancake is an open-face one, made  with an egg and rice flour batter and topped with chicken, prawns and fish mousse and a heap of beansprouts.  As with a few more dishes we ordered, there would be fresh mint, sweet basil, cucumber, lettuce and thin slices of starfuit. A light dipping sauce of fish sauce and lime, and a soya paste dip accompany these.

Again the same waiter taught us to pick up a lettuce and do a wrap with a small slice of this warm pancake together with the mint and basil and starfruit, dip it in one of the sauces and you get the freshness of all the herbs, the tangy starfruit. Interesting flavours come through, but I wished the pancake were bigger.

As there were only three of us, we were advised by our friendly waiter not to order the combination platter with five starters. "It's too much for you," he said. I was impressed he remembered my friend J from three years ago when she celebrated her birthday at Sao Nam in Hartamas Shopping Centre (it has since relocated to Empire Shopping Gallery in Subang).

Instead we had some spring rolls with prawns. There were six of them on the platter and it was too much for us.

Beef Bamboo Tube is a signature dish in Sao Nam. The thin, tender slices of beef, sautéed with lots of onions, mint and basil in a sweet sauce is presented in a bamboo resting on a chunk of cucumber. The waiter lights a flame underneath. I'm not sure what it does, but it is certainly visually pleasing.

Sao Nam's signature Mangosteen Salad does not disappoint.

A plate of rice paper accompanies the beef, together with a bowl of hot water and two bunches of coriander. More mint, sweet basil, starfruit and lettuce follow. We're taught to seep the rice paper with water using the coriander, put in a lettuce, the beef and some mint and basil, and eat it. After trying this, I found the beef on its own tasted even more delicious, with sweetness from the onions, and fragrance from the mint and basil.

The Grilled Eggplant was exceptional. It was drizzled with a fish sauce dip, then sprinkled with fried shallots and garlic, crushed peanuts and spring onions. I loved the soft, creamy texture of it, the smoky charcoal aroma, and it drew just enough flavours from the sauce to make it an exquisite experience.

Oh yes, the Duck in Tamarind Sauce makes you remember its crispy skin, flavourful, tender meat and the mildly sweet and sour sauce the slices of duck sit on. We loved it.

We had no room for dessert though the caramel pumpkin looked tempting. But we had the Vietnamese drip coffee – the Chon or weasel coffee – and we left the restaurant really happy.

Sao Nam is located on Lot 28, LG floor, Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang Jaya. Tel: 03-5022 2123.

The interior of Sao Nam... vibrant and classy.

Eusebio’s health improving, set to exit intensive care

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 07:45 AM PST

LISBON, Dec 23 — Portugal great Eusebio is recovering well from pneumonia and could be moved out of the intensive care unit by tomorrow, an hospital official said.

"He is doing well now, after two days in intensive care unit he is doing better. He is very stable ... and is better than yesterday," Luz hospital clinical director Jose Roquette told Reuters. "We think he might go to intermediate care unit tomorrow."

The former Benfica and Portugal striker (picture), who turns 70 in January, was admitted to Lisbon's Luz hospital this week diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.

The Mozambique-born forward, also known as the 'black panther' for the fear he inspired on his opponents, helped Benfica reach four European Cup finals, the last in 1968 when they lost in extra-time to Manchester United. Benfica won the trophy in 1961 and 1962.

"I think that in two or three days we will be getting better news. Anyway, he will spend Christmas with us ... tomorrow we will make a new appraisal of the situation. He is feeling very well, very calm, speaking with the family and some friends," said Roquette, before adding that Eusebio asked to have codfish for Christmas eve, the traditional Portuguese meal.

Eusebio retired in 1975 after earning 64 Portugal caps and 41 international goals, including an emotional Wembley appearance against England in the semi-finals of the 1966 World Cup, where he was top scorer. — Reuters

Mancini wants away-day cheer for Man City

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 07:36 AM PST

LONDON, Dec 23 — Invincible at home this year, Premier League leaders Manchester City face consecutive away games over Christmas with manager Roberto Mancini wary of offering up unexpected gifts at West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland.

City, who lead the table at Christmas for the first time since 1929, drew 1-1 at Liverpool, then lost 2-1 at Chelsea in their last two away league games and Mancini wants a return to winning ways on the road, starting at West Brom on Boxing Day.

"We still have Chelsea, United, Tottenham and Liverpool to come to the Etihad Stadium, but we need to win away games as well, and we have only one point from our last two," Mancini, who is about to experience his third Christmas campaign as City manager, told the club's website.

"I have a lot of respect for West Bromwich, and I have a lot of respect for (manager) Roy Hodgson — he is one of the best managers in Europe.

"I think it will be very hard because they play good football. They have had some problems but they have won their last two away games and seem to be in good form, it will be a hard match," added Mancini, whose side lead champions Manchester United by two points.

City have few injury worries ahead of a spell of three games in little more than a week and should have swashbuckling full back Micah Richards available after injury.

While Mancini can boast an embarrassment of riches, United and the rest of the pursuing pack are feeling the pinch a little with injuries and suspensions testing their squads.

Young sidelined

United have home games against Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers before concluding their holiday fixtures away at Newcastle United and manager Alex Ferguson, preparing for his 26th Christmas in the Old Trafford hot seat, knows how vital the jam-packed holiday programme can be.

He was boosted by the news that Phil Jones suffered no break to his jaw in the dazzling 5-0 win at Fulham on Wednesday, although winger Ashley Young is sidelined for the clash with Wigan, a fixture United have never dropped a point from.

Despite the statistics, however, Ferguson is a big fan of Wigan boss Roberto Martinez, whose third-from-bottom side will arrive in good heart after morale-boosting home draws with Chelsea and Liverpool.

"I watched Wigan versus Chelsea the other day and I thought Wigan were terrific," he told United's website.

"It says a lot for Roberto Martinez, he continues to play good football irrespective of what position they're in. We have a good record against Wigan but we won't take anything for granted. We need to keep our foot on the pedal."

Injury-hit Tottenham, in third place with 35 points face a trip to Norwich City on Tuesday before a New Year's Eve clash with another of the promoted sides, Swansea City.

They will be without Rafael van der Vaart and winger Aaron Lennon while striker Jermain Defoe is another struck by a hamstring curse afflicting the north London club as they mount a creditable top-four challenge.

Juggle squad

Fourth-placed Chelsea (33 points) are low on defensive options as they prepare for the Dec. 26 derby at home to close neighbours Fulham.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas, who has worries over Branislav Ivanovic and John Obi-Mikel after they limped off in the 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, said he would try to buy a centre back in January.

Until then, however, the Portuguese, like his Tottenham counterpart Redknapp and even United's Ferguson, must juggle his squad and hope to keep City in his sights.

"They have the squad for sure," Redknapp said of City's strength in depth. "They are the favourites but Man United won't be far behind them. But anything can happen still, it's very close in the top four."

Fifth-placed Arsenal (32 points) will not have to travel out of the capital over the holidays, hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday before London derbies with Queen's Park Rangers and Fulham.

Liverpool will hope to put the controversy surrounding their support of Luis Suarez, found guilty of racial abuse, behind them with home games against bottom club Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United before their trip to City.

Manager Kenny Dalglish said he had some sympathy for Rovers, the club he took to the league title in 1995, and their beleaguered manager Steve Kean who faced vociferous criticism during his side's defeat by Bolton Wanderers this week.

"The frustration is understandable in many ways but I don't think it's helpful and it's sad really it has come to that, but that's the way it is," Dalglish said. — Reuters

Group predicts ‘Kate’ will be top buzzword in 2012

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 05:15 AM PST

LOS ANGELES, Dec 23 — In 2012, buzzwords will bow to the British royals, with "Kate", the Duchess of Cambridge, forecast as the most-used word in the media, according to a group that surveys the English language.

"Kate", Duchess of Cambridge: Chic, elegant, fashionable — with Prince Charming William at their wedding procession in London, April 29, 2011. — Reuters file pic

The Texas-based Global Language Monitor yesterday said several factors would keep Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, in the news after her widely watched wedding earlier this year to Britain's Prince William.

People would see "Kate" used extensively if she became pregnant, said Paul Payack, president of the group. And even if she did not, the 2012 Olympics in London should heighten her exposure because she would serve as an ambassador to the games.

Born Catherine Middleton to a family of commoners, the duchess of Cambridge has been much discussed in the media this past year due to her marriage to Prince William, who could eventually become King of England.

Her chic style and elegant clothing, handpicked from top designers, have made her a fashion icon, and she and her husband have charmed crowds wherever they went, including on a tour through North America earlier this year.

The Global Language Monitor said it compiled its lists of top words and phrases using a computer algorithm that tracked thousands of media outlets around the globe, as well as blogs and social media websites.

Another top word expected for 2012 would be "Olympiad" given that the summer Olympics were returning, Payack said.

The group in November announced that "Occupy" was the top word of 2011, in reference to the boisterous anti-Wall Street protest camps that arose in recent months in cities across the United States and many other countries.

A year ago, the group predicted "twenty-eleven", the common pronunciation of 2011, would be the top word or phrase of this year, Payack said.

Following "twenty-eleven" were the phrases "Obama-mess" — which the group predicted would gain traction if President Barack Obama's ratings suffered — and "great recession".

"We saw 'Occupy' as a response to the 'great recession' and 'Obama-mess' and all that, but no one could have predicted something like Occupy," Payack said.

Overall, Payack said his group deserved a "B" grade for its 2011 word predictions. — Reuters

Handsome accordion player is North Korea’s kingmaker

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 01:04 AM PST

SEOUL, Dec 23 — The power behind the throne in North Korea was a dashing accordion player in his youth, whose life changed when he met the daughter of autocratic founder Kim Il-Sung at university and wooed and married her despite the dictator's opposition.

Now an ascetic-looking, bespectacled 65, Jang Song-thaek has overcome a purge, bitter palace intrigue and personal tragedy to become the chief adviser to his nephew Kim Jong-un, the third-generation leader of North Korea after his father Kim Jong-il's death last week.

While little is publicly known about North Korea's first family, acquaintances, South Koreans who met Jang during a 2002 visit and analysts say he could steer the young Kim toward opening up one of the world's most isolated states.

"He did seem to be someone who's more interested in the outside of North Korea and more interested in the rest of the world," former US assistant secretary of state Christopher Hill told Reuters, adding, however, that he needed to see more evidence.

"Jang Song-thaek is interesting," added Hill, who travelled to Pyongyang as a US special nuclear envoy from 2005 to 2008.

In recent pictures out of Pyongyang, Jang is one of the few men in civilian clothes seen standing near Kim Jong-un at the mausoleum where his father's body lies in state.

Jang is a leading member of the coterie that will now rule North Korea, a source with close ties to Pyongyang and Beijing told Reuters this week.

His official titles include vice chairman of the National Defence Commission, the supreme leadership council which Kim Jong-il led as head of the military state.

In Seoul, officials and other sources said Jang has three traits that make him suited to run, or at least influence the running of North Korea: he understands the mechanics of Pyongyang's power structure, he knows South Korea well, and he has good connections in North Korea's 1.2-million-strong military.

Han Kap-soo, a former South Korean agriculture minister who hosted the North Korean delegation in 2002, said Jang was diffident, but clearly not someone to be taken lightly. He was also fond of a drink.

"As expected, the focus was on Jang," Han told Reuters. "But he never came out in front. When we tried to take pictures, he tried to move to the back."

But one morning, after a night of hard drinking, Jang failed to emerge from his room on time. No one dared knock on his door.

"I thought, 'Oh, people can't even go wake him up,'" Han said.

Commoner

Jang was born in 1946. He was not from the North Korean elite, and not the sort of husband Kim Il-sung wanted for his headstrong daughter Kim Kyong-hui, an author some North Korean defectors have said.

Nevertheless, he attended the prestigious Kim Il-Sung University in Pyongyang.

"He drank well and was fun and played the accordion well. And he was a very smart guy," said Jang Sung-min, author of the book "War and Peace: Where is North Korea headed after Kim Jong-il".

"So many girls liked him. He was so charming, that's why Kim (Kyong-hui) fell in love with him."

Joo Sung-ha, one of the defectors, said the couple, who were classmates, continued to meet despite opposition and Jang's exile to another university.

"Kim Kyong-hui drove Kim Il-sung's Mercedes whenever she had time to meet Jang and did laundry for him after he moved to another university due to Kim Il-sung's opposition," said Joo, citing other North Korean sources. Joo attended Kim Il-sung University but in later years.

The two wed in 1972, but it was not a happy marriage, said Joo, who was a university lecturer in North Korea before defecting.

Kim Kyong-hui was later described as an alcoholic and the couple's daughter committed suicide at her apartment in Paris in 2006, ironically because her parents were opposed to her boyfriend.

Kyong-hui later became Kim Jong-il's most trusted confidante but often disparaged her husband, at times treating him like a subordinate or a servant, according to a Japanese chef who cooked for the leader in the 1990s.

In 2004, Jang was thrown out of the power clique because of differences with Kim Jong-il and perhaps for having close ties with the leader's disgraced first son Kim Jong-nam.

But he was rehabilitated two years later, apparently at the behest of his wife, and he later switched his support to Kim Jong-il's favoured third son, Jong-un.

He also ran afoul of other powerful people at the time and was badly hurt in a car accident, South Korean media said. It's not known how he did it, but he was soon back in the inner circle.

"He is exceptional in the grasp of the mechanics of power," said Baek Seung-joo of the state-run Korea Institute for Defense Analyses. "He is a powerful man, a skilled operator and a bold person, which was apparent as early as in 2000."

After his brother-in-law suffered a stroke in 2008, Jang gradually boosted his influence and cemented his place in the power circle, becoming, with his wife, one of Kim's most trusted advisers by the time of his death.

Jang also amassed influence during a long tenure in the powerful Organisation and Guidance Department of the ruling Worker's Party. In the 1990s it was believed to be "the most powerful department in all of North Korea", said Lee Jong-seok, an authority on the North's power elite.

Jang is now likely to seek control of the party's Office #39, the source of financial resources to control and influence the elite, South Korean analysts say.

Office #39 would allow him to maximise domestic influence and possibly extend his reach over foreign policy and North Korea's nuclear programme, according to a 2010 US Department of Defence report.

That post would give him the ability to open up North Korea if he could do so without destabilising the regime, analysts said.

"I think Jang Song-thaek is the one who acknowledges the need for cooperation with the outside," said Han Ki-bum, who was a specialist at the National Intelligence Service, the South's spy agency, until 2009.

Concealed power

In public and on the surface, Jang prefers to keep a low profile. But that only conceals the power he wields, those who have met him say.

"He was a hard drinker, with a very powerful image, and he seemed to have a sense of authority and power," said Park Jie-won, a member of parliament who met Jang, once in Pyongyang and again when he was part of a high-level delegation that toured industrial sites in the South in 2002 under warming ties.

"He came across as very sharp," said Park, who was also the right-hand man of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who held the first summit with Kim Jong-il in 2000 that led to a breakthrough in the bitter rivalry between the two Koreas.

But for all his power, Jang can be over-ruled by one word from his nephew. And he is unlikely to seek power for himself.

"Jang Song-thaek and Kim Jong-un can't abandon each other," said Joo, the defector.

"Kim Jong-un lacks solid power now and Jang sees no need to risk his life to overthrow Kim. Jang will have more say in this new Kim Jong-un era but Kim Jong-un is the one who makes the decisions." — Reuters

Jolie hopes Bosnia war movie speaks to her generation

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 09:14 AM PST

LOS ANGELES, Dec 23 — Angelina Jolie didn't plan on directing a movie. But the more she learned about the 1990s Bosnia war, the more she felt responsible for bringing it home to her generation.

Jolie threw her energy into "In the Land of Blood and Honey", writing, co-producing and directing the complex love story set against the horror of the 1992-95 conflict in which more than 100,000 people are believed to have died.

Angelina Jolie: Writing, co-producer and director. — Reuters pic

The movie, which initially stoked controversy in Bosnia, opens in US cinemas today and has been nominated for a Golden Globe award for foreign language film.

"I didn't go into this wanting to be a director, I went into this film because I was moved by the themes," Jolie, 36, told Reuters.

"It wasn't a normal film experience for me, it was an education every day in humanity and in unity, and also getting to know a culture," she said.

The Oscar-winning "Girl, Interrupted" actress was just 17 years old and working to establish herself in Hollywood when the conflict in Bosnia erupted on the other side of the world.

But it wasn't until years later, when she became a United Nations Goodwill ambassador and visited Bosnia, that she learned about the war and its victims.

"As I looked into Bosnia — because this was (when) I was a teenager — I felt responsible to pay more attention because I didn't at the time ... I was too young and living my life," said Jolie.

"This is my generation that went through this in Europe. So I read more and I learned more and I was just so taken by how little I knew, how little the world speaks about it, and I felt compelled to put this story together," she said.

"Blood and Honey" is the tale of a Serbian man and a Bosnian woman on the eve of the ethnic conflict, who later meet when he is an army officer and she is his detainee.

Jolie cast unknown Bosnian actors Goran Kostic and Zana Marjanovic as the leads and filmed in both English and Serbo-Croat.

But before reading the script, female victims of the war raised objections, and Jolie was forced to shoot many of the scenes in Hungary, rather than Bosnia as she had planned. The movie has since received an enthusiastic reception in Bosnia and Jolie was given an honorary award in July by the Sarajevo film festival.

"This film belongs to this country and these people, it's their story and their film," Jolie said. "They're the most talented actors and nobody could have done these roles better."

Responsibility also weighed heavily on the two lead actors.

"You try very hard to do the best job you can and represent that conflict and your people as best as you can," said Marjanovic, who plays Ajla.

Kostic, who plays Serbian character Danijel, said the movie was very personal. "It's very close to our hearts, and of course, coming from the region, it's easy to tap into that emotional landscape," he added.

Jolie, who was last seen on screen in the 2010 action romance "The Tourist", is yet to schedule her next project.

"I still can't believe somehow I ended up doing this, but I was so compelled by this particular story and I have such a unique crew and cast," she said. — Reuters

Melanie Amaro wins first US season of ‘X Factor’

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 09:01 AM PST

LOS ANGELES, Dec 23 — An emotional Melanie Amaro won the TV singing contest "The X Factor" yesterday, earning a US$5 million (RM15.8 million) recording contract and closing the first US season of the heavily hyped Fox show.

Josh Krajcik finished second after a public vote and Chris Rene came in third after a Christmas-themed, two-hour finale that featured performances by Justin Bieber, Stevie Wonder, Leona Lewis and 50 Cent.

Amaro, 19, a ballad singer whose voice has drawn comparisons with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, had been tipped by the four judges to win after delivering a powerful rendition of Beyonce's hit "Listen" in Wednesday's live show.

Yesterday, she dropped to her knees in prayer and wept with joy, speechless at her victory.

More than 100,000 people auditioned for a chance to compete in "The X Factor", which judge and entrepreneur Simon Cowell brought to American television after making it the most-watched show in his native Britain.

But the US show has fallen short of the ratings and critical expectations set up by Cowell this year. It has drawn an average of 12 million viewers or about half the audience for long-running singing contest "American Idol" that is also on Fox.

Amaro's US$5 million contract is with Cowell's Sony Music-owned record label SyCo. She also gets a starring role in a new commercial from sponsor Pepsi.

"We came here to find a superstar and we found a superstar," said a delighted Cowell after Amaro won the contest.

Krajcik, 30, a bluesy rock singer who worked in a burrito restaurant before joining the show, also congratulated Amaro.

"Melanie deserves it. She has a wonderful voice. I have had such an incredible experience. I got to be myself and sing what I wanted to sing. I couldn't be happier," Krajcik said.

Rene, 28, a recovering drug addict and rapper whose original song "Young Homies" has been a YouTube hit, was eliminated at the halfway point of yesterday's live show.

All three contestants had performed two songs apiece on Wednesday. Host Steve Jones did not reveal the number of votes cast by the public by phone, text message, Twitter and online.

"I feel amazing that I got to do this, that I am here," Rene said. "I got to touch a lot of people's hearts out here."

"The X Factor" will return for a second US season in the fall of 2012. — Reuters

— Foto oleh Choo Choy May

Umno needs ‘game-changer’ to ‘share nation’?

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 06:57 PM PST

DEC 23 — Umno has done it again. Yes, even worse than the chest-thumping and brandishing of the keris, Umno leaders have said it all again. Each outdoing the other to inflict greater trepidation in their political nemesis, the opposition parties.

In so doing, Umno has turned "xenophobic". In their manic phase, they are finally waging war against anything perceived as "non-Umno" and, more despised, 'anti-Umno'.

Now that the dust has settled, Umno "moderates" (very few) would have wished that it was only a rehearsal of sorts. Likened to a horrendous dream, many would not want to be reminded by it. If only they could rewind or delete the orgy of vitriolic speeches and frenzied antics. It has surely left a very bad taste in the nation's mouth for a long time to come. But it is too late.

In all fairness, Najib's speech and the sound bites were mainly of party about to face a "do-or-die" outing in the impending 13th general election (GE). Understandably, it was aimed at heightening party's diehards and the faithful to be battle-ready.

But beyond those usual rhetoric expected of leaders of all political parties, of whatever ideological persuasions and notably in anticipation of a GE, Umno has inadvertently laid themselves bare in the eyes of all and sundry.

As if its information chief's rhetoric prior to the general assembly was not sufficient to stoke the siege-mentality that feeds on irrational fear, a current hallmark of the Umno-Malay constituency, speeches of both leaders of the two wings, Youth and Puteri, did not provide much to propel for a new framework of thinking.

Indeed, Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin's belated effort of forging the concept of generational change does seem alien, and worse still, alienating to many of the rank and file. His talk of rewriting Umno's political DNA so as to enable the party to unlearn and relearn new realities, was surely beyond the grasp of his Youth Wing leaders, perhaps as well of top party leadership.

Incidentally, when the deputy president of the party chided both wings' leaders for failing to attract the attention and interest of the Generation Y, it is a veiled critique that KJ's ideas were, at best, hot air. Failing to connect with Gen Y surely smacks of an inability to understand them in the first place, making a rewriting of Umno's political DNA or a generational change sound so aloof and academic.

In all fairness, KJ could conversely have been blunt if only he had the courage to speak out against party's top leaders. KJ could have taken a pot-shot at Muhyuddin Yassin's own antics and his pathetic posturing on race-relation and Malay supremacy, which has time and again placed Umno Youth and Puteri Umno in a compromising situation and, hence, perceived as less "sexy" and attractive to the Gen-Y. If only "generational issues" of this nature be first understood, it helps political organizations to thrive.

That aside, the nation was still willing to give Umno and Najib Razak a chance to prove their worth. The onus was on them to convince the rest of the nation that Umno has what it takes to redeem this failing nation. It was their show and all eyes were on them. Umno could have showcased all the good sides of Umno and that only Najib's Umno understands what it takes to lead and "To Share This Nation"!

But, alas, for reasons only known to them, in much the same way the Auditor-General's report has nuked Najib's 2012 Election Budget, Umno has torpedoed any chance of their re-invention. In the face of a major watershed of the 13th GE, Najib and Umno's top leaders have miserably succumbed to playing to the bigger gallery of the Malay assembly.

The reaction of Dr Mohd Asri Zainal Abidin, the former Mufti of Perlis, who was back to attend the Umno GA from a short stint at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, perhaps said it all. At this critical crossroads, he opined that Umno has failed to bring new ideas to match the hopes of the rakyat. Other analysts were more unfriendly, perhaps more caustic, in their critiques.

Faced with a litany of unending woes and a nation divided, Najib has failed to show he is in control of it all.  Umno top leaders, Najib included, were driving the party faithful into frenzy by manufacturing stories that the Malays were besieged and victimised, and turning their political nemesis convenient "bogeymen". Literally none were spared.

Given that overarching backdrop, the usually-visionary party president diminished into obscurity; in his place, a "street-fighter" of sorts. He lost sight of the bigger picture of convincing the world that only Umno could lead in "Sharing the Nation". He lost his Midas touch of a statesman; perhaps he never had one.

Najib's speech of a "game-changer" then sounded so hollow and far-fetched. Although he elaborated why Umno was capable of meeting challenges throughout its historical development, he failed to highlight what it takes to be a real "game-changer".

Najib rightly touched on three pertinent areas or elements that now require a "game-changer" – the new media, new political reality and new thinking among voters. But not unlike KJ, it was more hot air; products of a shadowy foreign operative to merely burnish his dented image both locally and internationally.

A "game-changer", simply put, is one who is able to think out of the box and come out with new and different ideas that stand out from the crowd. A game-changer is a leader who provides the group what it cannot do for itself. He or she leads, instead of being led.

Najib, unfortunately, is no epitome of a "game-changer" anyway. If anything, he is the anti-thesis of it.  Similarly, Umno, which has long fossilised and is perhaps incapable of reinvention, is acutely in need of a "game-changer". You can't give what you don't have!

What Najib failed to realise and elaborate in his speech was what it takes to truly be a "game-changer". If only Najib could have the audacity to grab the bull by its horns and tell all the Umno warlords that Umno must reform before it can transform, half the battle could have been won.

Reformation must be wide-ranging in all sectors: politically, economically and socio-legally. It must cut across the various levels; structurally, fundamentally and in fact breaking through on the realm of world-views. It must transcend beyond rhetoric and lip-service to dispel distrust and contempt.

For a start, Najib must further pronounce that if Umno is to reinvent itself, it must debunk the supremacist ideology of Malay Supremacy or Ketuanan Melayu and embrace the "Ketuanan Rakyat" or "Supremacy of the People".

It is not about competing with Pakatan Rakyat but more about understanding the demands of New Politics. It is not merely about tweaking policies or plagiarising it. It demands a total substantive approach; not merely a formative one. We already have an overdose of the latter.

Umno top guns must break the shackles of their own making — the perverted version of "Race, Religion and Royalty — and truly embrace the rule of law, constitutionalism of the Federal Constitution and above all, justice. It is premised on a vibrant and functional democracy.

The fact that Najib could embrace Pekida the very next day after the Umno GA and assure it that Malay survival is guaranteed, betrays Najib's shallowness and downright naivety. It makes a huge mockery and a farce of his 1-Malaysia clarion, when Najib was seen widely grinning with the ultra-Malay group Pekida.

Going by the performance of Najib and his spate of flip-flopping, he is now deemed to be following closely the foot-step of his immediate predecessor if not much worse.

His deafening silence on Sharizat Jalil's NFC fiasco, his lukewarm commitment on his recent political and legal reforms, namely the disgraceful passing of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2011, is living testimony of gross mismanagement of the nation.

The latest zigg-zagging on the new civil service pay scheme (SBPA) is indeed laughable.

Again, the question is asked, has Najib what it takes to lead and "share this nation"?

      3 ulas rasa suka

      1 botol hati gembira

      1 biji rendah diri(saiz besar)

      5 keping kehormatan

      1 cubit rasa rindu

      3 batang tanggungjawab, dipotong halus

      3 bekas cita-cita

10 guni kejujuran (diayak untuk membuang kata dusta)

Ramuan diadun dengan ilmu dan akal. Masukkan dalam kuali persahabatan, tunggu hingga masak. Setelah masak, hidangkan bersama yang tersayang.
