NEW YORK, Oct 18 — Sonoma County and Tuscany have emerged as the top wine destinations in the world in a TripAdvisor survey that culled rankings from millions of online reviews.

While the survey identified 32 favourite destinations around the world for oenophiles, Sonoma County in California topped the 2012 Travelers' Choice Wine Destination list for the US, while Tuscany edged out the wine-growing regions of France and Spain to top the European ranking.

Though the US may be best known for its California wineries abroad, oenophiles also singled out areas like Willamette Valley in Oregon, Finger Lakes in New York, Walla Walla in Washington and Palisade in Colorado as favorite wine destinations.

Sonoma County, meanwhile, may not produce as much wine as Napa Valley, points out TripAdvisor, but readers gave the area high marks for its unpretentious vibe, laid-back appeal, local spas and wine variety, from Chardonnay to Zinfandel.

Tuscany emerged as the favorite wine destination in Europe for its Chianti, Vernacci di San Gimignano and the area's Super Tuscans, blends that cannot be designated as Chianti because they contain less Sangiovese grapes than legally required, but fetch impressively high prices for their quality.

It also helps that wineries in the area are set against the stunning backdrop of the Tuscan countryside.

MOSCOW, Oct 17 – Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson knocked second seed Marion Bartoli out of the Kremlin Cup tennis, thrashing the Frenchwoman 6-3 6-0 in the second round today.

Bartoli, who had a bye in the first round, looked out of sorts on the hard indoor surface, committing 10 double faults and winning only 50 percent of her first serves.

The world number 10 showed little resistance after losing the opening set and conceded the match with a half-hearted forehand into the tramlines after 75 minutes.

"Mentally I was fine but my body was just not reacting. I was feeling tired and exhausted and, of course, the surface was very slow so it didn't help my game," Bartoli told reporters.

"It was very difficult for me to beat her on this kind of surface because she likes to have time to get the ball back and she had all the time in the world here."

In the quarter-finals, 46th-ranked Arvidsson, who beat Bartoli for the fifth time in seven matches, faces seventh seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia or unseeded Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova.

Kirilenko beat compatriot Elena Vesnina 7-5 6-1 in the first round today, while Shvedova dismissed Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-2.

Czech Klara Zakopalova became the first woman to reach the last eight of the annual indoor tournament after upsetting eighth-seeded compatriot Lucie Safarova 6-4 6-4.

Denmark's former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, seeded third, meets Poland's Urszula Radwanska later today while Australian top seed Samantha Stosur begins her action tomorrow against France's Alize Cornet. – Reuters

Fans outraged at soaring Rolling Stones ticket prices

Posted: 17 Oct 2012 08:57 AM PDT

LONDON, Oct 17 — Rolling Stones fans reacted with fury today at the steep cost of tickets for the British band's 50th anniversary shows, while prices soared to thousands of pounds on re-sale websites.

After months of rumours, the Stones announced on Monday that they would play two nights at London's 02 Arena on November 25 and 29, followed by gigs at New Jersey's Newark Prudential Centre, just outside New York, on December 13 and 15.

But hundreds of fans have taken to the Internet to complain about the ticket prices, with a seat for the London shows costing £406 (RM1,990) on the official ticket website.

But hundreds of fans have taken to the Internet to complain about the ticket prices, with a seat for the London shows costing £406 (RM1,990) on the official ticket website.

Premium tickets have subsequently appeared on re-sale websites for more than £13,000 each.

The cheapest seats on the official site, costing £106, appeared to be sold out today.

"These prices are a joke," fan Steve Grace wrote in a comment appearing on the official See Tickets website. "To expect this sort of money just makes me lose a lot of respect for these guys."

Drachan Forster added on the site: "Saw them in Rio at a free concert. Was pickpocketed relentlessly throughout, but nothing compares to this fleecing. £246 for some of the worse seated tickets in the house. Disgusting."

By today, seats at the front of the 20,000-capacity 02 Arena were listed on the Get Me In re-sale website for up to £13,200 each.

Many fans protested online that the band should have rewarded their fans for their loyalty over the past half-century with cheaper shows.

"Considering these guys started off as a working-class set of lads, these prices are well out of reach of the ordinary working man," Chrissi Matusevics posted on Facebook.

American Express customers gained advance access to tickets for the London shows on Monday, followed today by subscribers to the band's mailing list and users of Britain's O2 mobile phone network.

The tickets go on general sale in Britain on Friday.

Hospitality package tickets for the two US shows go on pre-sale on Saturday, ahead of a wider pre-sale next Monday and a general release on October 26.

Frontman Mick Jagger, 69, told BBC radio on Monday that the four concerts would be followed by a longer string of dates, yet to be announced.

US music magazine Billboard reported in August that Jagger and bandmates Charlie Watts, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood will earn a total of US$25 million (RM76.3 million) for the four shows. — AFP/Relaxnews

A minute with: Sienna Miller on Hitchcock’s obsessions

Posted: 17 Oct 2012 07:10 AM PDT

NEW YORK, Oct 17 — In the words of Alfred Hitchcock, "Blondes make the best victims".

But while the great British director's preference for blondes has been documented, new film "The Girl" narrows in on one particular obsession — actress Tippi Hedren, whom he handpicked to star in his 1960s movies "The Birds" and "Marnie".

The film, premiering on Saturday on US cable channel HBO, offers a cinematic tale of Hedren's version of how Hitchcock, played by Toby Jones, launched her career, and, after she refused his sexual advances, eventually killed it.

Sienna Miller spoke to Reuters about portraying Hedren, whether "The Girl" will change Hitchcock's legacy and whether the film world still allows for such abuses of power.

Q: Does Tippi Hedren, now 82, still feel Hitchcock ruined her career?

A: "Well, she absolutely does feel that, because he did. She is at the same time very complimentary about him, and as a director no one is disputing the fact that he was incredible at what he does. And also he taught her how to act and she is very indebted to him for that — to learn from the master. But yes, he was really responsible for damaging her career and of course there is resentment that comes with that."

Q: Tell us about the emotions she was going through while filming "The Birds" and "Marnie" and coping with his advances.

A: "She was trying desperately to keep her head afloat, to do the job, just to walk the moral line, to not react, to not capitulate to his demands, or desires, whilst remaining respectful to this incredible filmmaker that she was working for. But I think she gradually became more and more ostracised from everyone and people on the set were seeing this behaviour ... and turning a blind eye, which was completely isolating."

Q: Will this depiction of Hitchcock ruffle any feathers?

A: "If you really watch the film, you leave feeling empathy for both characters — at least that is the way that I feel when I watch it. But he was very threatening towards her.

"With the Hitchcock films, these personality traits are alluded to in the films that he made. I don't think it is any surprise that he was misogynistic, you only had to watch 'Marnie' ... It is a film about a man who definitely has a dark side, hence the incredible film that he made. There is certainly no question that he was a genius, but this is just one woman and her account of her experiences working with him."

Q: What about his legacy — will the film alter it?

A: "I think his films will remain some of the greatest films ever made and he will always be heralded as one of the greatest directors of all time. But often with geniuses, there is a kind of dark side and that is nothing new. I don't think it will have any profound effect on his legacy as a director or a filmmaker."

Q: Hitchcock was famously obsessed with blondes in an era of Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot.

A: "There is a quote in the film, I can't remember it exactly, but he said that 'Blondes make the best victims'. I think that is what he liked about them."

Q: They did a good job giving Toby Jones Hitchcock's jowls.

A: "He had four hours in prosthetics, which I think was not too pleasant."

Q: The film shows how actors at that time were beholden to studios and directors. Have we changed so much today?

A: "You hear stories, but nothing that I have ever experienced, no. I think it is a very different world, and in the past, women needed men in order to have any form of career, especially during that era, and now we are not as reliant upon men for everything. You don't need to support the man in order to get somewhere. The studio system is also very different, but I have never come across — although you hear stories of casting couches — but that is nothing I will ever experience, hopefully."

Q: And yet it still happens. What needs to change?

A: "I don't think it's specific to the movie world, it is probably in all walks of life. Obviously, it is a terrible situation for anyone young and hoping to go places. I know that Tippi feels that. She hopes that people who watch this film will have the courage and stand up and say, 'This happened to me' and expose the darker sides of all industries." — Reuters

Hidup perlu diteruskan

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 04:27 PM PDT

Kos sara hidup semakin tinggi manakala peluang pekerjaan semakin sukar. Manusia semakin terdesak demi ringgit.

Why RM1m isn’t enough for good translations

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 04:20 PM PDT

OCT 17 — Our deputy prime minister has announced a RM1 million scheme to encourage more translators to go full-time instead of part-time.

Here's the reality: There aren't enough good translators to go around in the first place. Ask anyone in publishing and they will tell you that finding someone who writes well in Bahasa Malaysia while also having a high comprehension level of English is difficult.

I'm not saying there are no good BM writers — there are plenty — but to be a good translator, you must master not one but two languages. And that is something the ongoing political rhetoric defies.

The problem with Malaysia is the absence of a "win-win" mentality. It is perceived that for someone to benefit, someone else must get the short end of the stick. For one race to prosper, the others must be brought down.

So it is with BM; for years, it has become part of our culture to "memperkasakan" Bahasa Malaysia by discouraging the use and mastery of the English language.

Comprehension is a skill that isn't being taught enough in our schools. You can see that reflected in the comments on many websites in Malaysia. I see many readers making comments that demonstrate that they do not understand what is really being said. They often are unable to read between the lines and miss nuances in language.

I've seen many shoddy BM translations that demonstrate poor comprehension levels. The simple truth is that if you cannot understand English, you cannot possibly get the correct meanings across in Bahasa.

Instead of throwing RM1 million — which is chicken feed, really — at the problem, it would be better to start in school. The perception that BM must be "diperkasakan" to the detriment of other languages has to be remedied.

It is ridiculous that instead of teaching our children to better understand important reference books written in other languages, we are spending RM1 million to have more books in Bahasa Malaysia. That doesn't fix the problem, especially when the quality of those translations are likely hit-and-miss.

We should probably also disallow politicians from getting anywhere near our education system. What benefit has political involvement brought to our children's schooling? We get ridiculous and costly measures like the Bahasa Baku campaign, so-called "smart" schools (remember those white elephants?) and general meddling from people who do not understand what is best in the long run.

Even in our courts we find so-called interpreters using Google Translate and that is frankly not acceptable. Google Translate is not a tool for professional usage. You need real translators and interpreters, who have a solid grasp of two languages so as to communicate the correct meanings in both.

Politicians and so-called BM champions must stop being delusional about our national language. You don't "protect" it by discouraging the mastery of other languages.

You can throw as much money at translators as you like, but if there aren't enough people who comprehend English well enough to translate it, then what is the point? The reality is that English matters and will always matter. If it didn't, then our politicians wouldn't be sending their children overseas to study now, would they?

Maybe the RM1 million would be better spent on creating an Education Blueprint that actually makes sense.

Putrajaya menyokong keluarga mangsa tragedi Batang Kali tuntut keadilan

Posted: 17 Oct 2012 03:16 AM PDT

Putrajaya perlu rasa ‘malu’ rakyat bina lebuhraya atas inisiatif sendiri

Posted: 17 Oct 2012 01:49 AM PDT

Ahli Parlimen Shah Alam Khalid Samad. — Gambar fail
