Arsenal still have title hope, says Wenger

Posted: 28 Mar 2014 07:44 AM PDT

March 28, 2014

Arsenal can put their morale-sapping recent results behind them and win the Premier League, manager Arsene Wenger (pic) said on Friday ahead of a crucial home clash with title favourites Manchester City.

Fourth-placed Arsenal have endured a dismal week as a 6-0 thumping by leaders Chelsea, followed by a home draw against struggling Swansea City, left them six points off top spot.

But the Frenchman, whose team have taken eight points from their last six league matches, was in a defiant mood ahead of Saturday's visit of City.

"There is no other priority other than coming first. That is still our target," said Wenger, whose best chance of claiming a trophy this season comes in the FA Cup where they will face Wigan Athletic in the semi-final in April.

"We have not given up, believe me. We were 17 or 18 times top of the league this season.

"If people say (fifth place) Everton can catch us, then we can catch the teams above us."

Arsenal have been guilty of capitulating against their title rivals this season and were beaten 6-3 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in December.

Yet they boast an impressive home record in the league, losing only once to Aston Villa in the first game of the season, and Wenger has backed his stuttering side to perform against third-placed City.

"We play at the Emirates where we show big strengths and we want to show that again," Wenger told a news conference.

"There are plenty of positives to take from the game at the Etihad, but of course, we must defend better.

"It will be down to the quality of our collective defending on Saturday. We have to keep going despite our negative results.

"We haven't started the big games on the front foot and we want to change that."

With the pomp and ceremony surrounding Wenger's 1,000th game in charge shattered at Stamford Bridge last weekend, media speculation about the Frenchman's future has intensified as he is yet to sign a new contract.

The 64-year-old, however, says he is committed to the north London club and is also confident that French right back Bacary Sagna, whose contact is up at the end of the season, will stay on.

"I'm confident he (Sagna) will stay, but we will accept his decision and go with it," Wenger added.

"My commitment is not questionable. I have given my word and I always respect my word." – Reuters, March 28, 2014.

Satisfaction! Rolling Stones’ Paris gig sells out in less than an hour

Posted: 28 Mar 2014 08:39 AM PDT

March 28, 2014

Rolling Stones (pic) fans today snapped up 75,000 tickets for a Paris concert in June in less than an hour, organisers said.

The tickets for the belatedly added Paris leg of the "14 on Fire" tour on June 13 were put on sale at 10am (5pm Malaysian time) and sold out in 51 minutes, said Pascal Bernandin of Encore productions.

The tour kicked off in Abu Dhabi on February 21 but was suspended after the March 17 suicide of Stones' frontman Mick Jagger's girlfriend, US fashion designer L'Wren Scott.

The Paris gig was announced last Sunday after the Stones postponed a tour Down Under following Scott's death. The band has promised to reschedule the Australia and New Zealand concerts.

The tour will resume on June 7 in the Netherlands. In Paris the iconic rock band will play at the Stade de France, a national stadium built for the 1998 World Cup.

They are also scheduled to play two gigs in Germany and one each in Belgium and Italy.

The band has promised to treat their generations of fans to classic hits such as "Gimme Shelter", "Paint It Black", "Jumping Jack Flash" and "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll", as well as unexpected cover versions. – AFP, March 28, 2014.

Angelina Jolie urges action against rape as a war weapon

Posted: 28 Mar 2014 08:35 AM PDT

March 28, 2014

Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie (pic) and British Foreign Minister William Hague today urged the international community to stop the use of sexual violence as a war weapon.

Jolie, whose 2011 directorial debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey" dealt with violence against women during Bosnia's war, urged peace missions around the world to make combatting sex crimes a priority.

"The use of rape as a weapon of war is one of the most harrowing and savage of these crimes against civilians," Jolie told a conference in Bosnia's capital.

"This is rape so brutal, with such extreme violence, that it is even hard to talk about it," said the 38-year-old actress, who is a goodwill ambassador for the UN's refugee agency.

Jolie and Hague were in Sarajevo for a conference on sexual violence in war organised by Bosnia's defence ministry.

They are due to co-host a high-profile summit on the same topic in London in June, which is expected to be the largest ever gathering of its kind, according to the British foreign minister.

Hague said that today "sexual violence is used deliberately as a weapon of war" in the conflicts in Syria, Central African Republic and South Sudan.

"I hope we can all work together to prevent the horrors seen in this region from being repeated in future conflicts anywhere in the world," he said.

Around 20,000 women, mostly Muslim, were raped during Bosnia's inter-ethnic war in the 1990s, according to local estimates. So far only 33 people have been convicted for the crimes.

Jolie and Hague left later on Friday for Srebrenica to pay respect to the victims of genocide committed in the eastern town near the end of the 1992-1995 war.

Afer capturing Srebrenica on July 11, 1995, Serb forces executed some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the worst atrocity committed in Europe since World War II.

More than 6,000 massacre victims, whose remains were found in mass graves, were laid to rest at a memorial cemetery in the town.

Bosnia's war between its Croats, Muslims and Serbs claimed some 100,000 lives. – AFP, March 28, 2014.

The search for MH370 producing strange bedfellows with security issues

The capability of the Poseidon P8 (left), the latest US anti-submarine and electronic signals interception plane is of great interest to Chinese military intelligence. – Wikimedia pic, March 28, 2014. The pot-bellied silhouette of a Chinese Il-76 military transport plane appeared in the sky over Perth International Airport just as the US naval officer was explaining how he guards his cutting-edge surveillance plane.

Lieutenant Commander Adam Schantz was ticking off the measures, including a round-the-clock guard and armed rapid response team, as he caught sight of the Chinese aircraft coming in to land a few metres from the US P8 Poseidon for which he is responsible.

The search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is producing strange bedfellows.

"Yeah, it's a little different," Schantz said with a laugh.

At least six countries - the United States, China, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Australia - are participating in the search and rescue operation for the flight, which disappeared almost three weeks ago and is believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean off Australia's west coast.

The level of military cooperation between a grouping of countries that contains several traditional antagonists has been unprecedented.

But as the wary allies focus on solving this mystery, they are keenly aware of the boundaries of cooperation, diplomatic or military.

"When they are out there and the US is using its sensors, you can be sure that the Chinese are recording all of that and are analysing how it's done, because that's very useful in understanding how the P8s work," David Brewster, a visiting fellow at the Strategic Defence and Studies Centre at the Australian National University, told Reuters.

The Poseidon, an anti-submarine warfare and electronic signals interception plane manufactured by Boeing Co, is the most advanced of its type. Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea all operate an earlier model, the P3 Orion, while China has the larger Russian-made Ilyushin.

The P8 only entered service in 2013 and information on its sophisticated sensors could be a prime target for Chinese intelligence.

"I'm not surprised to see a lot of security. There's a lot of political sensitivity," Brewster said.

Western forces are also keeping their eyes open. Air search crews told Reuters that Australian personnel were flying with the Chinese on their sorties.

It was not clear if that was for security reasons or to assist with communications after the first Chinese aircraft to fly into Perth landed at the wrong airport last weekend.

Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said on Thursday that Chinese forces had had "effective communication" with the other countries taking part in the search, including "close coordination" with the Australians and Malaysians.

Then there are diplomatic sensitivities, chief among them the stormy relationships between Japan and its historical foes, regional superpower China and South Korea. By all accounts that has gone more smoothly than many had expected.

Earlier this week, Australian Defence Minister David Johnston hosted a lunch at Perth's RAAF Base Pearce mess hall with a dozen representatives of both the Chinese and Japanese search teams, as well as the Australians.

A defence ministry source in attendance told Reuters the teams enjoyed corned beef and chicken noodles in a convivial atmosphere, albeit sitting in their national groupings.

"It was very amiable and relaxed, there was no tension whatsoever, it was friendly, all very professional," the source told Reuters.

Bringing together countries like China and Japan, which have a history of tension over strategic grievances going back beyond World War Two, does raise cooperation issues, said Andrew Davies, a senior analyst for defence capability at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

But bigger political realities often faded, he said, when the issue at hand was getting the job done.

"You might be surprised at how down-to-business the operators can be on the ground," he said. – Reuters, March 28, 2014.

Morocco’s movie ‘Mecca’ seeks return to glory days

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 08:34 PM PDT

March 28, 2014

Ouarzazate in southern Morocco was once dubbed the "Mecca" of the film industry for its studio facilities and the stark beauty of its locations, with many Hollywood blockbusters shot there.

"Laurence of Arabia" (1962, Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif), "The Sheltering Sky" (1990, Debra Winger, John Malkovich), "Kundun" (1997, Martin Scorcese), "Gladiator" (1999, Russell Crowe, Oliver Reed) and "Babel" (2006, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett), to name a few.

All of them feature scenes shot at Ouarzazate, which lies at the foot of the scenic High Atlas Mountains.

But that was then and this is now. Its film industry is in the doldrums, needing fresh winds to get it moving again.

The famous town lost its appeal to international film-makers as economic crisis and the turmoil of the Arab Spring swept across the region.

As the North African winter ends, and some snow still graces the mountain peaks, a small group of people attends a casting call at Studio Atlas, one of the towns largest.

Ouarzazate's lengthy affair with showbiz has life in it yet.

"I began going to the cinema in 1967," says Larbi Agrou, who was in "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra" in 2000.

"For the past three or four years there's no longer been a rush by producers to get their films shot.

"Most people who work in films here also have other trades to keep them going – farmers, blacksmiths, and carpenters. But without tourism and the cinema, Ouarzazate would be dead," he says.

More crows than film-makers

Agrou says the first encouraging signs of a revival appeared last year, and that 2014 "is starting rather well".

Ouarzazate is known for attracting big-budget historic epics with large casts, and already Nicole Kidman and Tom Hanks have visited since the beginning of the year.

"Let's hope it lasts," says Aziz, another hopeful at the casting call, rubbing his hands. "There are already four films in production here."

And that means work for hundreds of people in Ouarzazate.

In 2005 alone, mega-productions such as "Indigenes" (Days of Glory) by Rachid Bouchareb, and Robert Dornhelm's "The Ten Commandments" were filmed there.

Fast forward to 2010, the year the Arab Spring broke out with an uprising to oust a dictator in Tunisia, and nothing on a similar scale was shot at Ouarzazate between then and last year.

A major factor behind that, according to Moroccan film critic Adil Semmar, was the rising insurance costs caused by security problems in the region, notably after the Arab Spring uprisings.

"It has made the cost of filming in Morocco more expensive for big companies, so some films were shot in places like Israel and Spain instead," Semmar said.

In an almost lunar landscape dotted with small oases, the imposing Tifoutout Studio, built by Italians in 1994, "is now a ruin," says resident Said Soussou.

Robert M Young's 1995 film "Solomon and Sheba" starring Halle Berry and Jimmy Smits was shot there, but the Italians then "sold it to our tribe when they left in 1997.

Because of the crisis of recent years, some parts are dilapidated," says another commentator, Mohamed Hbibi.

"There are more crows here now than film-makers."

With a decrepit wall as a backdrop, Soussou looks up at the ceiling of a half-destroyed dome that was used for David Betty's TV movie "The Bible Project" in 2009.

"Tifoutout can look like the architecture of ancient Jerusalem," he says. "But there is little value in that any more."

Diversity of locations

"Even when a film-making company does arrive, it fixes the bit it's interested in, gives the tribe five or six hundred euros and then leaves again," he says.

Most of the movie income has gone on "building a mosque and irrigation ditches."

Ouarzazate's fortunes contrast with the boom Morocco's own, heavily state-funded movie industry is enjoying, with 22 feature films made in the past year, compared with around five a decade ago.

Celebrated recent productions include "God's Horses" by the French director of Moroccan origin Nabil Ayouch, which won a prize at Cannes in 2012.

Another was "They are the Dogs" by director Hicham Lasri, which won a special jury prize for Arab features at the Dubai International Film Festival in December.

Like most Moroccan films, however, these are low-budget movies about the gritty realities of life in the North African country, with little need for expensive desert studios, says Semmar, the film critic.

Abderrahman Drissi, deputy president of the Ouarzazate Film Commission, grouping representatives of the Moroccan Cinema Centre and the tourism ministry, believes the authorities have a responsibility "to save this beautiful plateau."

But he also remains optimistic about the future.

"The diversity of locations means it's easy to sell to major producers," he says. – AFP, March 28, 2014.

Majistret perlu buat keputusan kukuh dalam inkues Teoh Beng Hock, kata peguam

Posted: 28 Mar 2014 02:26 AM PDT

March 28, 2014
Latest Update: March 28, 2014 05:50 pm

Sebaliknya, Gobind Singh berkata standard bukti imbangan kebarangkalian sepatutnya diguna pakai.

"Mereka menyasarkan sekurang-kurangnya 6,000 majoriti.

"Pertama mereka menghormati perjanjian tradisi.

– Bernama, 28 Mac, 2014.

Every press has its agenda on MH370

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 03:19 PM PDT

March 28, 2014

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

As a journalist, you must always have a certain perspective or context for the stories and issues you are working on or there really won't be any point.

There's a British journalism rule that goes a little something like "One dead Brit overseas is worth 100 dead people anywhere else", or something like that.

What it really means is that if you're working for the Malaysian press, then your stories will always have to be pursued from a Malaysian perspective.

And if you're working for the British press, then it will always have to be pursued from a British perspective. Simple enough, I would think.

Covering the story of the missing flight MH370 in Perth, Australia, along with dozens of other media worldwide, it really showed me this perspective.

Since the incident, a lot of the international press, especially the Chinese, seem critical of the Malaysian authorities and the way they have been handling the situation.

This caused many Malaysians to go on the defensive and start taking offence by what the press outside has been reporting.

There's nothing wrong with that, of course. But just understand this is how it works and that there is also nothing wrong with what they are doing.

Take, for instance, the night when our prime minister made a statement saying that all data in hand showed that flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

The Malaysian press immediately reported condolences and went into a period of mourning, which is only to be expected.

The Australian press reacted differently. When the Australian defence minister gave a press conference the next day, he was asked by Australian journalists if he agreed with the Malaysian PM.

Why? Because the objects that the Australians had found have yet to be confirmed as wreckage from flight MH370 and it is the Australian taxpayers funding the search in this area.

So when the Chinese press pressures the Malaysian authorities, it is only because it is serving the interests of the people at home who demand answers.

It's the same as during press conferences with the Australian rescue pilots and government officials in Perth, I would always ask questions that I think Malaysians would want to know.

I would ask if information is regularly passed on to the Malaysian authorities, are Malaysian personnel working closely with the Australian authorities, and so on and so forth.

Then, there is the Japanese press in Perth mainly because its government has sent two aircraft to assist in the search and rescue operations. You get it… Its questions are more Japanese-centric.

At the end of the day, everyone involved in the story will tell it from a certain point of view. So what I'm saying is that everyone has the right to freedom of speech and expression. – March 28, 2014.
