Franco-Asian exotica on Singapore skyline

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 05:42 AM PDT

SINGAPORE, Aug 23 — After launching fine dining restaurants in Taipei and Shanghai over the past half decade, Singapore's best known chef, Justin Quek, has come home.

With dishes like xiao long bao — a delicate Chinese dumpling — filled with truffle consomme and foie gras, the French-trained chef is hailed for his daring, artful blends of Asian and French ingredients and techniques.

Quek's new restaurant, "Sky on 57," which overlooks Singapore from the peak of a gleaming casino and hotel complex, is part of an influx of big-name chefs into the city-state as new money, proximity to Asia's growing economies, and slick tourist attractions draw businesses and visitors.

Among foreigners, Singapore is often referred to as "Asia-lite" or "Asia for beginners" — where travellers can sample the fiery spices, aromatic broths and deep-flavoured stews of the region without needing to endure the discomforts of Southeast Asia's sweaty jungles or its less accommodating cities.

Quek spoke to Reuters about Singapore's culinary heritage, and how he blends Asian and French cooking.

Q: Singapore is known as a food-obsessed city. What makes it so special here?

A: "We're very small, and in our history until recently we've been a so-called clean, obedient city, so all you can do is eat. The street food is great. South Chinese immigrants into Singapore — Hakka, Cantonese, Hainanese, Hokkien — they brought their culinary skills with them, and Singapore is surrounded by Malaysia and Indonesia — that's where it started to fuse. When the first wave (of immigrants) couldn't get the ingredients they were used to, they improvised, started to eat chilli, blending, improvising, until it becomes habit. It's Chinese mixing with Malay: in China they use oil, Malay cooking uses coconut milk."

Q: What are the thought processes behind your combinations?

A: "When I eat something, my palate will tell me how I can elevate the flavours. (With sweet foods) I'm thinking 'how do I counter the sweetness?," and I can take acidity from lime, light spiciness from ginger. It's all about balancing flavours — it's not that you can read a book and do it. With my food, I prefer (to drink) Riesling, because my food has a bit of spice, or Pinot Noir. Sauternes, just have it with a ripe melon or a peach, some Spanish ham, otherwise it's too cloying."

Q: Can anyone do it?

A: "Mixing isn't about 1+1=2, it's not that easy. When you're eating something and your palate tells you what's missing, that's when you start combining. The difference between me and a French chef is that I think Asian. The sauce with my pepper lobster is different from the pepper sauce that goes with steak."

Q: Is "fusion" part of an evolution in cooking away from regional cuisine toward a "global" style?

A: "'Fusion' is very badly used. We use 'Franco-Asian'. My training is French; I use Asian products and flavours. The difference is, we use less butter and cream. Our target is mainly Asians, and lots of Asians are lactose intolerant."

Q: How is the growing wealth in China changing dining habits?

A: "There are people who want to show they've arrived. It's the same in any nouveau riche country. Some people, they don't think about money, they just say 'give me the best' ... In Europe it's more 'c'est comme ca' (it must be done like this) though they've started to change. Hong Kong is a very sophisticated market, they're affluent, they know what's good."

Q: What are the technical skills most important in cooking?

A: "First, knife skills. Then, knowing how to control heat. Most important is choosing the right product ... the rest is simple. Take a fresh langoustine, cook it in a heavy pan to seal it, add extra virgin olive oil, a basil leaf and some baby spinach." — Reuters

Moroccan snails — from street food to upscale snack

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 05:31 AM PDT

RABAT, Aug 23 — Standing on the side of a road in a hectic north African capital may not be what most people would consider the ideal place to eat boiled snails.

Diners inclined to try "escargots" may think of it as a dish best prepared by an expert chef and reserved for special occasions, like a visit to a French restaurant.

But in Morocco, snails are street food and have been for decades.

"We sell snails all year. There is always demand, everywhere in Morocco. I've been doing this work for 25 years," said Abderrahim, a snail-seller drowsily working under the sun near the central plaza in Rabat, the Moroccan capital.

In Rabat, on the country's west coast, escargots — called boubouch or b'bouch — are served at roadside stalls and in the souks, the traditional open-air markets.

The snails on offer are low in fat and high in protein and magnesium, similar to those found in Spain or in the south of France, but the preparation — and presentation — is not what you'd find at a French bistro where a garlic butter sauce is the norm.

In Morocco, snails are simmered in a broth seasoned with aniseed, licorice root, thyme, sweet and spicy pepper, mint, bitter orange peel, and crushed gum arabic, an ingredient taken from acacia trees.

When the stewed molluscs are ready, they're scooped out of the pot by the roadside vendor with a large wooden ladle.

Tourists walking by regularly take note of the dish but rarely sample the contents, vendors said.

But one Moroccan entrepreneur recently launched an upscale version of the cherished snack for those queasy about buying escargots from roadside vendors, where they may feel cleanliness is an issue.

Mohamed Alaoui Abdallaoui's specially designed truck tours Rabat's trendier neighbourhoods and delivers the spicy simmered snails to clients right at their front door.

"I hope that other (competitors) will follow, so that we can offer Moroccan clientele a range of choices that are safe, clean and high-quality," Abdallaoui explained, speaking French, the language of the country's former colonial power.

Though long a domestic delicacy, most Moroccan snails — which are handpicked mainly by women and children — are exported, notably to Spain. In fact, the government's social development agency, ADS, said between 80 and 85 per cent of some 10,000 tonnes of snails harvested each year are shipped abroad.

The ADS has tried to promote increased food production as one of its projects designed to help the millions of Moroccans mired in poverty, like many of the women and children who collect the snails.

Abdallaoui's customers, at any rate, are thrilled.

"We got used to eating these with our parents when we were small," said Youssef, a regular client of the mobile escargot truck. "But this is clean, it's well organised, and there is no need to worry about the hygiene."

Sihan is another client now hooked on snail home delivery.

"It's the real, traditional snail we used to have at home. It's delicious, we love it. Look, everyone is eating them," he said. — AFP-Relaxnews

Farah goes the distance in search of gold

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 07:32 AM PDT

LONDON, Aug 23 — British distance runner Mo Farah will have travelled further than most as he attempts to end the stranglehold of Ethiopia and Kenya on the men's 10,000 metres title at the athletics World Championships.

Farah arrived in Britain from Somalia as an eight-year-old and settled in West London.

Last year, he spent time training in Kenya before winning the European 10,000 and 5,000 titles, and has now moved his wife and young daughter to Oregon in the United States so he can be coached by three-times New York Marathon winner Alberto Salazar.

The journey has paid dividends and Farah is in the form of his life going into the August 27-September 4 championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Unbeaten in his past 10 races, Farah is the fastest man this year over both the 10,000 — thanks to a European record of 26 minutes 46.57 seconds set in June — and the 5,000.

"Things have been going really well," Farah said in a news conference in the build-up to the London Grand Prix earlier this month. "I've been enjoying being based in Portland, Oregon, with Alberto Salazar as my coach.

"He's a really great coach and for the last six months everything's gone really well. The worlds are not far away so I've got to just keep my feet on the ground and continue doing what I'm doing."

The last athlete outside of Kenya and Ethiopia to win the world 10,000 title was Italy's Alberto Cova in 1983 — the year Farah was born.

Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele has taken gold at the past four championships, and also won the 5,000 title in Berlin two years ago, but the world record holder has injury problems after rupturing a muscle in his right calf in January 2010.

Farah began his season by retaining his European indoors 3,000 title in March and it was over the same distance that he rounded off his World Championships preparation this month with victory in front of an adoring home crowd at Crystal Palace.

The 28-year-old brought spectators to their feet with his blistering finish, running the last 200 in just over 25 seconds for a comfortable victory.

"It's just pure hard work and graft, nothing is easy, you know, I just keep training. You have to make sacrifices," he told reporters after the race.

Farah has also been selected for the 5,000, over which he set a British record of 12:53.11 in July, and has not written off the possibility of attempting a distance double.

"In Daegu, I'm definitely going to give 110 per cent in the 10k and then see what happens. I'll see how the legs are then go for it in the five after," he added.

The men's 10,000 final takes place on August 28. The heats for the 5,000 are on September 1, with the final on the last day of competition on September 4. — Reuters

Arsenal appeal to Uefa to delay Wenger ban

LONDON, Aug 23 — Arsenal today appealed to Uefa to delay imposing a two-match touchline ban on manager Arsene Wenger until after its Champions League match tomorrow at Udinese, the club said.

Uefa ruled yesterday that Wenger broke the rules of his original touchline ban — imposed after last season's defeat to Barcelona when he criticised the referee — during the first leg of their Champions League playoff against Udinese in London last week.

As it stands, Wenger must not sit in the dugout tomorrow, but a club spokesman said that Arsenal wanted any ban delayed because their appeal could not be heard until Thursday.

Wenger, sitting in the stands for the first leg at the Emirates stadium, communicated to his assistant Pat Rice in the dugout through first-team coach Boro Primorac, who spoke to the bench by phone.

Uefa's match delegate warned Wenger to stop at halftime, and although he did so, Uefa handed Wenger a two-match ban and fined Arsenal €10,000 (RM42,760) for the infringement.

Arsenal spokesman Mark Gonella said: "There is a disagreement between Arsenal and Uefa. We were told that the manager would be permitted to relay instructions to Pat Rice through Boro Primorac, who spoke to Pat by phone. Subsequently we were told he could not, so that's why we are appealing Monday's decision."

Arsenal won the first leg 1-0 and they face another tough task against the Italians, who played some polished football last week and went close to scoring on a number of occasions.

One piece of good news for Wenger is that captain Robin van Persie is eligible after being banned for the first leg after his dismissal in the defeat against Barcelona at the Nou Camp last season.

Wenger, though, will not have the services of France midfielder Samir Nasri, whom Arsenal has agreed to sell to Manchester City. — Reuters

No illegal drugs in Winehouse toxicology report

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 08:51 AM PDT

No illegal drugs in Winehouse toxicology report

LONDON, Aug 23 — Toxicology tests showed there were no illegal substances in British singer Amy Winehouse's system when she died last month aged 27, her spokesman said today.

In a statement, he said there was alcohol, but that it could not be determined what part, if any, it played in her death.

"Toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy's system at the time of her death," the statement read.

"Results indicate that alcohol was present but it cannot be determined as yet if it played a role in her death."

It added that Winehouse's family were awaiting the outcome of an October inquest into the "Rehab" singer's death.

The Grammy-winning pop star had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, and it was widely assumed that they played a part in her death, although one report quoted family sources saying it could have been caused by sudden alcohol withdrawal.

The soul singer famed for her beehive hairstyle and erratic behaviour on and off stage was found dead at her home in north London on July 23.

Winehouse's last filmed performance was in Serbia in June, when she was jeered by the crowd as she struggled to perform her songs and stay upright. On some tunes, the audience did most of the singing.

The gig, posted on the YouTube video sharing site, prompted her management to cancel all scheduled performances and give the performer as long as it took to recover. — Reuters

New York mayor hails record 23 shows filming in city

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 07:50 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Aug 23 — New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg said yesterday that a record-breaking 23 primetime TV shows were filming in the city's five boroughs, bolstering an industry that contributed US$5 billion (RM14.9 billion) to the city's economy each year.

Bloomberg touted the city's attempts to draw TV productions and encouraged more to shoot in the city. He spoke at Steiner Studios at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, on the set of Sony Pictures Television's new ABC series, "Pan Am", one of eight new primetime episodic series being filmed in the city.

"A show like 'Pan Am' employs 400 people behind the scenes and generates activity for our local economy at places like lumberyards, fabric stores and coffee shops," Bloomberg said. "We're working to strengthen and diversify New York City's economy and create jobs, and our thriving entertainment industry is a prime example of those efforts paying off."

The city's entertainment industry supports 100,000 jobs. In addition to the 23 primetime shows, New York is home to 140 news programmes, talk shows and reality series.

This year, his office said, New York City-based shows have earned a record 110 Primetime Emmy nominations. New York-based shows include "30 Rock", "Boardwalk Empire", and "Blue Bloods".

Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz joined Bloomberg in welcoming the new fall season — and invited West Coast productions to relocate.

"Brooklyn's big stage is a star on the small screen, from the 'Cosby Show' to current hits 'Boardwalk Empire' — which is filming at Borough Hall today — and 'Blue Bloods', which films at Broadway Stages," Markowitz said, adding that tax incentives and top-notch facilities had made his borough more attractive than ever for TV productions.

"So when you get tired of Lala land, come to Brooklyn — or as I call it, Hollywood East," he said.

The mayor's "Made in NY" Production Assistant Training Programme was developed with the non-profit Brooklyn Workforce Innovations to help New Yorkers find entry-level jobs in TV and film production.

The mayor's office said the programme had helped more than 300 New Yorkers become certified "Made in NY" production assistants and earn about US$6 million in wages. Three of them have joined the "Pan Am" crew.

The city has invested US$28 million in basic infrastructure for Steiner studios, in addition to US$100 million in private investment from Steiner. The investment has led to one of the East Coast's largest sound stages and 1,000 jobs, according to Bloomberg's office.

The city, the federal government and the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation are investing another US$15 million, and Steiner is investing US$85 million to double the size of the studios. — Reuters

Internet ‘dating’ for money

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 05:56 AM PDT

WASHINGTON, Aug 23 — Pretty young women and older men of means — "sugar babies" and "sugar daddies" — are pairing up thanks to a US website that openly offers companionship for money, but balks at the word prostitution.

SeekingArrangement.com (SA) — which bills itself as the "premier Sugar Daddy dating site" — does not beat around the bush.

Screenshot of the SeekingArrangement.com site. — AFP pic

"We are a matchmaking website for wealthy benefactors, and attractive guys and gals," its front page says.

It is one of dozens of Internet sites that centres around the age-old idea of a "Sugar Daddy" — an older man who pays to maintain the lifestyle for a younger, beautiful companion.

On SA, the idea is simple: a man who is "rich and successful... single or married" sets up an online profile that reveals the amount in his bank accounts and the monthly allowance he can provide to a willing woman.

Amounts range from at least US$1,000 (RM3,000) to more than US$20,000.

"You have no time for games. You are looking to mentor or spoil someone special," says the site.

Men pay US$50 a month for an account, plus US$1,000 a year for the site to certify his wealth.

For the woman, who is ideally "attractive, ambitious and young," membership on the site is free.

"You seek a generous benefactor to pamper, mentor and take care of you, perhaps to help you financially?" asks the site.

The couple will meet, dine, travel together — and maybe more.

"If it was just money and sex, people would go to an escort website," SA founder Brandon Wade told AFP.

"People meet, they negotiate and feel the chemistry, and if two people don't like each other, then nothing happens."

The 41-year-old Wade, who graduated from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said people are often overly judgmental of these types of relationships.

"The point is that there's nothing wrong with dating somebody who is rich and who is willing to spend money on you in a relationship, and that's what it is about," he said.

On the site's blog, "BellaSavantNYC" describes herself as an educated career woman and says that helps her attract even more men.

"For me, having a sugar adds enjoyment and companionship without any of the general relationship issues. I have been in arrangements where it was platonic as well and it was just as fulfilling," she writes.

Of course, money is at the heart of SA, an idea the website reinforces with their logo, which is a red heart with a $ symbol in the middle.

And of course, there are Sugar Mommies too, dating younger men.

Ronald Weitzer, a sociology professor at George Washington University and author of several studies on the sex industry, says under US law, there must be talk of money for sex from the start of the process to constitute prostitution.

In the case of SA, he says, the specific amount is not asked for right away.

"Prostitution is normally a direct exchange of some kind of material resources for sexual services," Weitzer told AFP.

"It's considered a very direct transaction but it gets complicated when you start looking at a more long-term relationship between the person who is paying and the person who is receiving," he says, calling SA's service "borderline."

He adds that most of the women on the site would not define themselves as prostitutes.

"But if you would ask them, 'Are you basically exchanging sex and romance for economic benefit?' they would have to say yes. Basically that would be a definition of prostitution."

According to Wade, 35 per cent of the Sugar Babies who use his site are students who often use the money to pay for their studies, though that number cannot be independently verified.

So are Sugar Daddies truly searching for romance or fixed-rate love?

"I don't know what they are looking for," said Weitzer.

"Clearly what we do know is that they have resources. They are not the type of person who would go out on the street, looking for a prostitute — they are lawyers, corporate people, bankers." — AFP-Relaxnews

Kes liwat Anwar: Sampel sperma dari dubur Saiful tak ‘layak’ dijadikan bukti

Posted: 23 Aug 2011 03:38 AM PDT

My last long summer

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 05:05 PM PDT

AUG 23 — One of the many sacrifices a medical student has to make is the absence of long holidays during the clinical years. My first clinical year starts this September, and so I'm going to have to leave the comforts of family, friends, and deliciously warm weather for my local hospital in England, again.

From now on, there will be no three-month long summer breaks after the constant stresses and pressures of the academic year are lifted from my shoulders. No more coming home and lounging around, meeting everyone for various meals, shopping for things in ringgit not pound, and hanging out with my family without the acute knowledge that I have to leave in a few days.

So this time, I've been paying close attention to the things I'll miss. Apart from the people – family and friends whom I will miss keenly whilst I'm holed up at home in the dreary winter months – I realise that subconsciously, or consciously, there are many other things that occupy that space in my heart that is the reason why I'll be coming back home after all this is over.

The other day I happened to watch "The Malayan Emergency" on the History Channel on Astro. The struggle towards independence was a hard one. It cost Malaysians their lives, their families, their loved ones, and their peace of mind.

And even then, some of the new villagers who were being interviewed in the programme said "So what?" So what if we are independent? The fighting went on anyway, regardless of whoever was in charge.

But if you look at us now, moving forward, and compare this with the unrest that goes on in many nations worldwide, I think that even if independence was just a word then, we can agree that it's a way of life now.

And while we complain about history lessons, grouse over government policies and have our disagreements, in every Malaysian there is a streak of protectiveness over this land which we call our own, because we have known what it was like to have had our freedom taken from us.

It is a bond to home that I don't see so often when I'm overseas. It is a bond to our parents, our ancestors, and our tradition, which we have upheld through the years. I miss this culture, this protectiveness, this support, when I am away.

This summer has also been a gastronomic experience of sorts for me, having been hosting a few overseas friends here in Kuala Lumpur. I've been treated to the best pan mee, lemang, nasi kandar, naan, kuih, cendol and many other great foods, and I've had the privilege of enjoying these with my family and friends.

There are very few round tables in England, most of the cafes and restaurants opting for squares and rectangles. The dining arrangement there makes a difference at large gatherings, where there is a boundary created by the logistics as well as the fact that we don't share dishes.

I miss the incredible Malaysian food, as well as the atmosphere in which we eat here, because meals are a time for gathering friends and family, and are cause for (sometimes noisy) celebration.

I will also miss living on the edge here in Malaysia, where the average individual goes through an obstacle course of sorts throughout the day to avoid getting into a car accident (whether in another car or as a pedestrian), avoid falling because of our uneven pavements and huge drains that may or may not be covered, avoid getting wet in the rain or suffer heat stroke from the sun, avoid getting food poisoning, and so on.

Some of my friends came visiting this summer from the UK and EU, and they were amazed at the way I could drive around in the madness of Bukit Bintang without batting an eyelid, or how rarely we developed food poisoning while a single curry puff could put them in bed for a few days, or the fact that they had to carry water, sunscreen, a foldable umbrella, and various vitamins in their bags, while we walked around with our phones and wallets in our pockets and nothing much else.

We put up with the unpredictable public transport and weather, we take life here in our stride, and we've found ways to get over any obstacle that we are presented with; which has (against all odds) made us into tougher, more street smart individuals.

I could go on and on, but this August article was just meant to give you my opinion of some of the things that we Malaysians have going for us, that makes us the unique country that we are – and to perhaps give you some inspiration to look into the things that you are grateful for in your own life here.

Happy Birthday, Malaysia. I'll miss you.

Beauty and the Beast 2.0

Posted: 22 Aug 2011 05:00 PM PDT

AUG 23 — Once upon a time (or maybe twice), there was a merchant who had three beautiful daughters. Predictably, as in all fairy tales, the two eldest sisters were ugly and despicable, and cared only for fine dresses and jewels.

The youngest was called Beauty — for obvious reasons — and had a kind and gentle heart, and was especially loved by her father. She was also intelligent; an engineering Major who graduated summa cum laude [1] from a premier university that shall remain unnamed.

One day, the merchant was going off on a long business trip, and he asked his daughters what they would like him to bring home.

"I'd like a fine, emerald necklace," said the eldest, although she was a little bit on the plump side and really had no neck.

"And diamond earrings for me," cried the second, although she really should have asked for a liposuction.

"What about you, Beauty? A humongous, over-priced diamond ring, perhaps?" asked the merchant.

"I just want you to have a safe trip and to come home soon," said Beauty, "and if you can find one, I would like a white rose or maybe a purple tulip."

The merchant set out on his business trip and months passed as he went about his business of raising funds, buying aircrafts, haggling over landing rights at airports worldwide, buying a football club or two, and negotiating for sponsorship deals.

Finally, it was time to come home. The merchant did not forget his daughters' requests, and before returning home he bought an emerald necklace and diamond earrings at Kedai Berlian Yaacob dan Anak-Anak. [2]

Unfortunately, nowhere could he find either a white rose or a purple tulip for Beauty, for it was winter and snow was falling heavily. He searched high and low, even travelling all the way to Keukenhof, but alas, to no avail.

As he was nearing home, the merchant missed his way in a snowstorm, and could not tell where he was. He was soaking wet up to his underpants and cursing the damned satnav, which was not working properly.

Just as he was about to turn round, he saw lights ahead, and soon found himself at the door of a great castle. He was mighty relieved and hoped that perhaps the owners of the castle would offer him shelter for the night. In fact, he wouldn't have minded paying the rate of a local bed-and-breakfast for a hot shower and a warm bed.

He went to knock on the door, but it was already open. There was not a servant in sight, so the merchant invited himself in and wandered around the castle. He walked along the dark halls, looking at the frameless, nameless portraits on the walls, until he reached a huge hall. There he found a splendid supper laid out, so he sat down, and enjoyed the feast.

In the corner of the hall was an open door, and when he looked in, he saw a bedroom that looked as if it had been prepared for him. There was even one of those little chocolate mints you sometimes find at posh hotels on his pillow.

The merchant was very tired, so he went to bed and slept soundly. In the morning a fine suit had been laid out for him to wear, and a hearty breakfast awaited him in the hall. He would have liked to thank his kind host, but still the merchant saw no one, and he was awfully disappointed not to be able to leave behind the customary 20 per cent tip.

As he walked through the garden on his way to the stable to collect his horse, he spied a beautiful rose bush covered with white flowers. Thinking of his daughter and her request, he reached out and picked a single rose.

Suddenly, he heard a thunderous roar from the bushes and a huge, ugly beast sprang out.

"Who is stealing my white rose?" he (the beast, not the merchant, obviously) growled, putting on his fiercest possible face.

The poor merchant trembled and could barely speak. "I did not mean to steal. My daughter begged me to bring her a white rose and this is the only one I have seen. You see, Beauty is this bright girl and she was actually the first one in the family to go to university. And I don't mean just any university either, because we are talking about proper education and she's into all the wireless communication systems and all that, you know…"

"Dude, that's TMI. [3] Anyway, it is my favourite rose and anyone who touches it must die!" barked the Beast. "But I will let you go if you promise to bring me the first thing that runs to meet you when you get home."

The merchant agreed to this rather arbitrary deal, and they both shook hands and signed all the necessary legal papers to make sure that their agreement was binding and watertight.

As he made his journey home, the merchant desperately prayed that it would be the cat that first came out to meet him, and not his beloved dog. Maybe it would be the milkman, or Mr Reidweiderlinger, the old kook who walks around town in a yellow track bottom and is rumoured to be the acid splasher at large and wanted by the police.

But as he approached the house, he was horrified that it was his little daughter Beauty who came running towards him. It was, without any shadow of a doubt, a bit of a bummer, and the merchant turned so pale that when she saw her father, Beauty thought he must be very sick.

The merchant gave Beauty the white rose and took her hand. He told her what happened to him at the castle and the promise he had made to the Beast. "But I will never, never give you up Beauty," he said "not to that beastly, urm, Beast."

"But Father, you must keep your promise," said Beauty, "and I don't want you to be like those politicians who make all sorts of promises before general elections and then disappear once they are elected into office."

"I can see your point, Beauty. I, too, believe that the nation's next general election must be clean and transparent," said the father. "I know what I'm going to say is not relevant at all to this story, but the electoral process must be free of fraudulent practices. We should seriously consider implementing fundamental reforms such as a clean-up of the electoral roll, the use of indelible ink, automatic voter registration, a complete re-look of the postal vote system, and a minimum 21-day campaign period."

The merchant was adamant that he wasn't going back to the castle but Beauty assured him that everything was going to be fine and perhaps the Beast will not hurt her. So they prepared to return to the castle, and then they rode silently through the forest, for they were too sad to speak.

At the castle they found the front door open and a meal laid out in the hall, only this time the table was set for two. They sat down, but Beauty and her father could not eat. They both had long lost their appetite, and it didn't help that they were served broccoli for dinner.

At nine o'clock, they heard a great roar and the Beast appeared, wearing pajamas. He spoke gently to them, saying to the merchant, "You may stay here tonight, but tomorrow you must go home. Do not worry about your daughter; she will have all she wishes for here."

Father and daughter parted with great sadness, but Beauty tried not to think too much about the separation.

Soon, she became quite contented with her life in the castle. Her room was tastefully decorated, complete with a 42" Samsung™ flat screen TV. She also got cable with uninterrupted transmission even during a heavy rainfall, [4] broadband Internet connection that was actually high-speed, and a Nintendo Wii.

There were roses outside her window, and on a table stood a wonderful mirror. In golden letters on the mirror frame was written, "See your wishes, here enshrined; what you long for, you will find."

At first glance, this may sound like a line from rapper Eminem's new chart-topping single, but all it meant was, whenever Beauty was unhappy, she could look into the mirror and wish herself home.

The mirror would then do real-time video streaming and Beauty could see what her father and sisters were doing at home, except when they were in the toilet taking care of the most personal of personal errands.

Often, this was how Beauty spent her days amusing herself, although she also maintained a personal blog and a Facebook® account with the appropriate privacy settings. [5] She also occasionally uploaded her photos so that all her 3,237 friends could 'Like" them if they wished.

In the evening, Beast would join Beauty for supper, and after they had eaten Beauty would sing to the Beast, often choosing to belt out the whole Aretha Franklin song catalogue in her attempt to kill him softly with her songs. The Beast was always considerate enough to not serve any food that contains butter, which may not be safe for consumption unless certified so by the relevant authorities.

One night, Beast asked her, "Do you think I am very ugly?"

Beast's voice sounded so sad and deflated that Beauty found it hard to answer him. Everyone knows that there is only one correct answer to this kind of question. It is a lot like being asked by your girlfriend/wife/spouse whether or not her arse look big in a new outfit. Although the honest answer may be "enormous" or "somewhat massive," all men know that "not at all, honey" is the only universally acceptable answer.

Following an uncomfortable silence, [6] Beauty – choosing her words carefully – finally said, "You have a very kind face, but let's just say that you won't be getting any modelling contract anytime soon."

Tears ran down the Beast's cheek, and Beauty felt so sorry for him.

"I do not think you are very ugly, but it's subjective, really. After all, beauty lies in the eye of the passport holder and also only skin deep. It's not about looks, and I care more about personality and character and all that good stuff," Beauty gently explained to the Beast, mindful not to sound too much like a beauty pageant contestant.

"I do like you very much though," she assured him.

"Then will you marry me, Beauty?" asked the Beast, in hope more than anything else.

"Oh, no! I could never marry an old beast. Let us just be friends," [7] said Beauty. She was so shocked and horrified that she went straight to her room. She looked into the magic mirror and asked to see her family again. The mirror duly obliged and much to her shock, Beauty saw her dear father lying ill in bed.

The next day came and Beauty could neither play nor work, and could only wait until supper-time came when she could ask the Beast if he would let her go home for just one week to visit her father.

"If you go you will never come back to me just like some of them foreign maids," said the Beast.

"I promise you I will come back in a week, dear Beast. Please let me go," pleaded Beauty.

"Very well," the Beast said, "but take this ring with you, and if you ever want to come back, put it on your finger when you go to bed, and in the morning you will find yourself here in your own room."[8]

That night Beauty looked into the magic mirror and wished herself home. Still sobbing, she fell asleep on her bed tightly clutching the ring, and when she woke up, she was in her father's house.

He wept with joy to see his daughter again, and he began to get well. One week came and went, but Beauty could not bear to leave her father. So she broke her promise to the Beast, and stayed another week, citing bad weather as the reason why she couldn't go back as originally planned.

One night, Beauty had a dream about the Beast. [9] She dreamed that she was back in the Beast's garden, wandering about. As she walked past the white rose bush, she found the Beast lying motionless on the ground. She couldn't find any drug around, so it couldn't have been an accidental overdose.

She ran towards him and she heard him cry out, "Oh Beauty, you have broken my heart, and I shall die without you." [10]

Beauty woke up from her dream and was overcome by a huge longing to see her dear friend Beast again. She reached out for the magic ring, slipped it onto her finger, and went to sleep. When she next awoke, she found herself back in her pretty room in the Beast's castle, just as he had told her she would.

Remembering her dream, Beauty quickly ran out into the garden, searching for the Beast. True enough, she found the Beast next to the white rose bush, lying so stiff and quiet she couldn't tell whether Beast was dead or was sunbathing in his Speedos. It was not a beautiful sight.

"Oh my dear Beast," cried Beauty as she threw her arms around his neck. "Please don't die, for I have come to take care of you, and I will marry you, for I love you with all my heart."

She continued, "And please, try not to embarrass anyone by lying here wearing nothing but that carefully engineered piece of undergarment. Stop this atrocity, I beg you."

She buried her head in her hands and wept ruefully. When she stood up, she could not see the Beast, but instead, through the tears she could only see a handsome young Prince beside her.

"Who are you? And what have you done with my Beast?" asked Beauty.

"Do you not know me, Beauty?" said the Prince.

Beauty looked into his eyes and recognised someone she knew all along.

"I am the Beast you loved and to whom you gave life and happiness. A witch cast a spell over me a long time ago, making me a hideous Beast, and nothing could set me free until a beautiful girl loved me and promised to marry me. Now that the spell has been lifted, I will initiate legal action and sue the broom off the witch's arse. We shall seek litigation cost, exemplary damages, sue for defamation, trauma, and everything else in between."[11]

"If you really are my dear Beast, then I will marry you because I love you," said Beauty.[12]

They got married the following summer and the wedding bash was held at Castle Leslie in Glaslough, County Monaghan, Ireland, and Beauty couldn't have been happier.

She asked her father to come and live with her for the rest of his days in the castle. So he sold all his business interests and did precisely that and became an avid art collector in his retirement days.

Beauty's two ugly sisters went to join Puteri Umno and were never heard of again after the last Perhimpunan Agung.

Goes to show that wishes do come true and there is always a chance for everyone to live happily ever after. Even if you're ugly.
