Reality check for Mr Sharapov as daughter advances

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 08:46 AM PDT

June 05, 2013

Sharapova of Russia hits a return to Jankovic of Serbia during their women's singles quarter-final match at the French Open tennis tournament in Paris. — Reuters pic PARIS, June 5  — Maria Sharapova's father is so confident about his daughter's French Open credentials that he has declared that she "can beat Rafael Nadal on clay".

Whether or not Yuri Sharapov still held that belief when his only child was whitewashed by Jelena Jankovic in the opening set of her Roland Garros quarter-final on Wednesday is anyone's guess.

What is in no doubt is that he raised a champion who is always ready to fight it out to the bitter end, and Sharapova kept her wits about her following a first-set walloping.

After watching the set disappear under a hail of unforced errors flying off her racket, Sharapova kept alive her hopes of retaining the Suzanne Lenglen Cup with a 0-6 6-4 6-3 win over Jankovic.

Sharapova had entered the contest with a 7-1 win-loss record over her old sparring partner from the Bollettieri Academy but no one would have guessed that following the opening 28-minute nightmare.

With the Russian's backhand misfiring, forehand malfunctioning and serve stuck in first gear, Sharapova gave Jankovic free rein to do as she pleased.

The Serbian former world number one blasted winners with her "money-shot" backhand "that pays my bills" and drew loud cheers for sliding into the splits as she chased down the ball.

Jankovic wrapped up the first set after yet another sloppy forehand from Sharapova, which took the number two seed's unforced errors count to 20.

"You have to erase the chapter and move forward... no matter how bad I was playing or how well my opponent was playing, I still felt I was in the match," a relieved Sharapova said in courtside interview.

"Sometimes you just have to get the job done, and I did today."

Jankovic, rather than pressing home her advantage in front of a group of flag-waving Serbian male fans who chanted her name throughout the match, paid a huge price for what at the time seemed like an innocuous mistake.

A slight misjudgement from the 18th seed in the opening game of the second set, when she opted to hit the ball at Sharapova rather than go for an outright winner, threw the Serbian off course and she went on to drop her serve and the set.

That left Jankovic to resort to her usual habit of muttering away to herself as Sharapova kept her eye firmly on the ball to break in the seventh game of the third.

A forehand into the tramlines from Jankovic handed Sharapova a place in the semi-finals for the third year running and a date with third-seeded Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka who beat Russian Maria Kirilenko 7-6 (3) 6-2.

"At the end she was the better player. I was a bit unlucky, but I fought, I fought hard until the end," said Jankovic, who was unsurprisingly plastered with tape along her shoulder and thighs after a hectic few days of playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles in Paris.

"A couple of bad decisions...and this is what happens." — Reuters

Everton appoint Martinez as manager

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 07:10 AM PDT

June 05, 2013

Reuters file pic of new Everton manager Roberto MartinezLONDON, June 5 — Roberto Martinez has been named Everton manager after leaving Wigan Athletic where the Spaniard forged a reputation for making the best of limited resources and playing attractive football.

Martinez has signed a four-year contract at Goodison Park, Everton said on their website (http://www.evertonfc.com) on Wednesday.

He guided Wigan to FA Cup success in May when they upset Manchester City in the final but could not prevent the club being relegated from the Premier League days later.

The 39-year-old replaces David Moyes who left Everton in May after 11 years to take over from Alex Ferguson who has retired as manager of Premier League champions Manchester United.

The Spaniard is likely to bring a fresh approach to the Merseyside club who are used to Moyes's more pragmatic style. Everton finished sixth in the standings last season.

Despite habitually being involved in a relegation battle with Wigan, Martinez bucked the trend of struggling coaches by sticking to his principles and playing passing football.

After spending most of his playing days in Britain, Martinez began his managerial career at another of his former clubs Swansea City.

He won plaudits for their free-flowing style of play and guided the Welsh side to the League One (third division) title in his first full season in charge.

He joined Wigan in 2009 replacing Steve Bruce, and had kept them up against the odds every year until this season.

Martinez was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool last year and was even photographed talking publicly with the club's owner John W Henry but has now joined their rivals Everton. — Reuters

Police in China’s capital urge women to cover up on public transport

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 04:41 AM PDT

June 05, 2013

A man sleeps as a woman walks past an entrance to a subway station at an underground passage in central Beijing, June 4, 2013. — Reuters picBEIJING, June 5 — Police in the Chinese capital have warned women not to wear miniskirts, hot pants or other skimpy clothing on buses and subways during the hot summer in order to avoid sexual harassment, Chinese media reported today.

Women should also shield themselves with bags or newspapers, and sit or stand in lower areas rather than in raised seats to avoid being surreptitiously photographed, according to guidelines issued by the traffic department of the Beijing Public Security Bureau and cited by the official China Daily.

Women often complain of groping and other harassment in Beijing's crowded buses and subways.

Most buses in the capital do not have security cameras so it is difficult for authorities to collect evidence of harassment, police officer Xing Wei was quoted as saying.

The heaviest penalty for sexual harassment is 15 days in detention, according to Xing.

Women have been guaranteed broad equal treatment under Chinese law since Mao Zedong, the founder of communist China, declared that women "hold up half the sky".

But despite that, women in China still face old-fashioned attitudes among many men and few women hold op jobs in government or business. — Reuters

Most parents aren’t stressed by kids’ screentime, says study

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 04:34 AM PDT

June 05, 2013

Nearly 60 per cent of parents said that they aren't concerned about their kids becoming addicted to media. — AFP/Relaxnews picSEATTLE, June 5 — Having grown up in a world packed with gadgets themselves, most parents of younger children aren't stressed about the potentially damaging effect of too much screentime on their offspring, a new US study finds.

A study of more than 2,300 parents of children up to age eight found that 78 per cent report that their children's media use is not a source of conflict or concern. Nearly 60 per cent said that they aren't concerned about their kids becoming addicted to media.

"Today's parents grew up with technology as a central part of their lives, so they think about it differently than earlier generations of parents," says lead author Ellen Wartella, director of Northwestern University's Centre on Media and Human Development.

"Instead of a battle with kids on one side and parents on the other, the use of media and technology has become a family affair."

The researchers found that children in what they call "media-centric" households spend three more hours every day with screen media, such as TV, computers, video games, smartphones and tablets, than those in "media-light" homes. About 39 per cent of families were rated as media-centric, while 45 per cent were considered media-moderate, with parents in this group spending an average of just under five hours a day using screen media. Their children spent just under three hours a day using some form of media.

The study was released June 4 at the Pew Charitable Trusts Conference Centre in Washington DC.

Findings also showed that 70 per cent of parents say smartphones and tablets do not make parenting any easier. Parents say they are most likely to turn to toys or activities (88 per cent), books (79 per cent), or TV (78 per cent) when trying to keep their children occupied. Of those with smartphones or iPads, 37 per cent say they were more likely to turn to those devices.

Even when trying to calm an upset child, parents say they are still more likely to turn to a toy or activity (65 per cent) or to a book (58 per cent) than to media; of those who have them, only 17 per cent say the same about letting the child play with mobile devices like a smartphone or tablet.

While parents feel positively about the impact of most forms of media on their children's reading and math skills and creativity, they felt video games did more harm than good. Parents rated video games as more likely to have a negative influence on their child's academic skills, attention span, creativity, sleep, and social skills than other forms of media, such as TV or computers. — AFP/Relaxnews

Sting returns to his childhood for new musical, album

Posted: 05 Jun 2013 07:15 AM PDT

June 05, 2013

AFP pic of singer Sting.LONDON, June 5 — Sting has turned back to his childhood in the shadow of a struggling shipyard in northern England for a musical that will debut on Broadway next year and his first album of original material in 10 years.

The musical, "The Last Ship", is based on Sting's experiences of living near the Swan Hunter Shipyard in Wallsend, Newcastle, and watching the demise of Britain's shipbuilding industry in the 1980s.

A spokeswoman for Sting on Wednesday said the musical had also inspired the rock star to produce his first album of new material in nearly 10 years, also called "The Last Ship", that will be released on Sept. 23.

"Guest artists on "The Last Ship" with roots in the northeast (of England) include Brian Johnson, Jimmy Nail, The Unthanks, The Wilson Brothers and Kathryn Tickell," the spokeswoman said in a statement.

"The Last Ship", released on Universal Music Group's Polydor Records, will feature 12 songs and be produced by Rob Mathes.

Sting, 61, has released 10 albums since going solo from the band the Police around 1984. This will be his first album of original material since "Sacred Love" in 2003.

As well as his music, Sting has acted in a list of films, including "Quadrophenia" and "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", and appeared as himself in TV shows like "The Simpsons" but this is the first time he has taken a major role in producing a musical.

He spent nearly three years working on the story that is focused on relationships, family, and community, collaborating with Joe Mantello, the director of the hit musical "Wicked" and John Logan, co-writer of the latest James Bond film "Skyfall".

Sting, born Gordon Sumner, was raised in Wallsend.

The Swan Hunter Shipyard on the River Tyne was once one of the world's leading shipbuilding operations that came under national ownership in 1977 with its construction operations wound back in the 1990s. — Reuters

Tugas pertama Zahid, KPN baru tangkap

Posted: 04 Jun 2013 04:17 PM PDT

June 05, 2013

Tindakan pertama Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad mula jadi Perdana Menteri membebaskan tahanan ISA yang ditangkap Tun Hussein Onn seperti Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad Kok Lanas. Lama kemudian baru dia tangkap orang. Ramai!

Tun Abdullah Badawi pula tindakan pertamanya jadi Menteri Dalam Negara, menyekat Harakah dari dua kali seminggu kepada dua kali sebulan.

Kerja pertama Datuk Seri Najib Razak jadi Perdana Menteri, membenarkan semula Harakah terbit dua kali seminggu.

The slow, sad death of Bahasa Malaysia

Posted: 04 Jun 2013 04:13 PM PDT

June 05, 2013

Native Sabahan Erna is (not) Malay but loves Malay literature. Her hobbies: cats/gaming/blogging at ernamerin.com/Tweeting at @ernamh.

JUNE 5 ― RIP Bahasa Malaysia. Despite Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka's (DBP) best efforts, the language is slowly evolving into Bahasa Englayu.

DBP has a perfectly functional website. You can search for the Bahasa equivalents of English words on the site and various dictionaries are readily available and, yet, Utusan Malaysia and Bernama are perfectly happy to invent new Englayu words every day.

According to Bernama, "hurricane" is "hurikan" and "billionaire" is "billionair" in Englayu. Utusan has coined the very rempit-sounding "dijel" instead of "dipenjara."

Who needs Bahasa anyway, when our leading Bahasa publications and news sources would rather use Englayu?

Why reach for a stuffy dictionary when you can just change the spelling of an English word and hey, presto, it becomes Englayu?

Not that DBP is not trying to resurrect Bahasa. It now has a special website where you can "report" bad usage of Bahasa. Just go to the DBP "Pantau Tegur Bahasa" section.

But instead of making it easy, you have to register at the site and then login before you can submit a bad case of Englayu-itis.

Why not just have a simple blog or Facebook page where screenshots of offensive Englayu usage can be displayed? Maybe if we ridicule Bernama and Utusan enough, they would get the point.

Oh wait, people do that anyway and they still refuse to change. Oh, well.

Perhaps this is an insidious plot by seditious individuals who are trying to make English the national language. At the rate Bahasa is "evolving" into English, we might as well just give up and replace the Kamus Dewan with the Oxford Dictionary.

Cintailah Bahasa Kebangsaan baru kita ― hidup Bahasa Englayu!

* This is the personal opinion of the columnist
