THOUSAND OAKS, California, Dec 5 — Tiger Woods ended a frustrating victory drought of just over two years when he clinched the Chevron World Challenge that he hosts by one shot yesterday, holing a six-foot birdie putt at the last.

A stroke behind fellow American Zach Johnson overnight, Woods fired a three-under-par 69 at Sherwood Country Club to claim the 95th tournament win of his career — but his first since the 2009 Australian Masters. — Reuters

FA Cup draw throws up juicy Manchester derby

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 07:29 AM PST

MANCHESTER, Dec 4 — Holders Manchester City will host rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup third round after today's draw threw up a mouth-watering derby.

The Manchester clubs, who are setting the pace in the Premier League, met in last season's FA Cup semi-final with City winning 1-0 before securing their first major trophy for 35 years by beating Stoke City in the final.

January's Cup meeting will come almost three months after City stunned their neighbours 6-1 in the league at Old Trafford in a result that signalled their strong intention to challenge United's years of domination in the city.

City have raced to a five-point lead in the Premier League over champions United, who will see the Cup meeting at the Etihad stadium as the perfect chance to exact revenge on their high-flying rivals.

The match is by far the standout of the draw for the January 7-8 ties, although the jubilant scenes of players from non-league Tamworth celebrating being handed a trip to Premier League Everton were a reminder of the magic of the FA Cup.

Apart from the big Manchester match, there will be one other all top-flight meeting as Newcastle United will host struggling Blackburn Rovers.

Last year's runners-up Stoke will travel to League Two (fourth division) Gillingham. — Reuters

Lyon’s silk survivors ply noble trade

LYON, Dec 4 — Heavy rolls of silk printed with a tiny stirrup motif line up on a factory floor near Lyon, waiting to be rolled, beaten and brushed to perfection, before they are cut into Hermes neckties.

Based outside the eastern French city, silk "finisher" Proverbio is one of a handful of survivors of a once-flourishing industry, which from farm to weaver to trader employed many thousands at its height in the 19th century.

Today the thread comes from China or Brazil, but Lyon still counts a core of about 30 silk companies focused on the very top end of the luxury market.

When Laura Bush wanted to spruce up the curtains in the yellow room of the White House, she naturally turned to the people who made the originals for Jackie Kennedy: Lyon's oldest silk weaver Tassinari et Chatel. France's whole textile sector took a knock following the banking crisis of 2008, but silk has bounced back in the past two years thanks to robust demand in the luxury sector.

"There aren't many silk firms left, but those that remain are doing well," said Pierric Chalvin, head of the regional textile federation, Unitex. Tassinari was one of a dozen firms showcasing its skills this week at the Lyon Silk Bazaar, held in the city's old stock exchange, where bolts and off cuts are sold direct to the public packing out the venue.

Founded in 1680, the firm supplies sumptuous 17th- and 18th-century patterned silks to the Chateau de Versailles, to royal households and luxury hotels the world over, turning over four millions euros last year.

"We have hand-made items that can take two, three or four years to weave — at a pace of a few centimetres a day," said Tassinari's industrial director Bertrand Dessailly.

"Technically, what we do could be done elsewhere. But our fabrics carry within them a little bit of French history. And the people who can afford them do not want to buy them in China."

Haute Couture designer Alexis Mabille, who is originally from Lyon, sources most of his silk there and partnered with the fair to promote local know-how.

"Each house here has its specialities," said the 33-year-old designer, known for his signature bow-tie motif.

"For couture or luxury ready-to-wear there are the classics like radzimir, which you can have reissued, or gazar which is back in fashion, or others who do chiffon with silk velvet."

He says a willingness to work closely with designers is key to survival.

"It means you can obtain things that are exclusive, or semi-exclusive. If you want a particular motif, a change of colour, something psychedelic instead of classical, you can have it," he said.

One of Mabille's suppliers is the weaver Sfate et Combier, which exports fabrics like silk chiffon and organza to more than 50 countries — and creates some 1,000 novelty weaves and patterns each year.

"In France it has become impossible to produce cheap fabrics. We have been pushed upmarket. But that is an asset, because the further up we go, the fewer limits there are on our creativity," said its chief executive Philippe de Montgrand.

From modern weavers like Sfate et Combier, to heritage firms, to luxury fashion brands from Chanel to Louis Vuitton or Hermes, Proverbio counts most of France's big silk players among its 50-odd clients.

It business, called finishing, is what makes silk feel like silk.

Step one is to scour or boil-off the fabric, to remove a sticky gum called secretin, the glue in the silkworm's cocoon.

Rolls of raw white silk, starchy and thick-feeling, are wound by hand onto spools and plunged into frothy vats of water with pure olive oil Marseille soap, emerging slippery and supple.

Proverbio then uses a string of chemical and mechanical processes to fine-tune the silk's feel and aspect -- mat, shiny, grainy, smooth — or add special properties.

"We can make a soft silk even softer for a piece of lingerie, or make a tie water-resistant," he said.

"The possibilities are infinite." Founded 90 years ago and still family-owned today, his firm last year expanded its workforce from 34 to 45 people and invests 15 per cent of annual turnover into research and development.

"Silk is inseparable from its history," said the firm's head Bruno Proverbio.

"Up to us to ensure that history is not just left gathering dust."

In the meantime, since the silk rolls need to travel back and forth between weaver and finisher, Proverbio believes it is unlikely to lose out to faraway competitors — as long as there are looms still whirring in Lyon. — AFP-Relaxnews

End of era as Bollywood’s ‘evergreen’ Dev Anand dies

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 12:05 AM PST

MUMBAI, Dec 4 — Movie actor and director Dev Anand, known for his joie de vivre as Bollywood's "evergreen hero", has died aged 88, an aide said, bringing the end to an era of Indian cinema.

Anand (picture), whose last film, "Chargesheet", was released in September, was in London with his son, Suneil, when he died yesterday from a heart attack, aide Mohan Churiwala told Reuters.

"He was never sick. Even when I spoke to him last evening, he sounded fine — hale and hearty," Churiwala said.

Anand is also survived by his wife, Kalpana Karthik.

Born in Lahore, Anand travelled to Mumbai to work as a clerk in a government office in 1944 and got his first break two years later in the film "Hum Ek Hain". He turned director soon afterwards and went on to deliver a string of hits.

"CID", "Guide", "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" and "Jewel Thief" are movies considered part of Bollywood's essential viewing catalogue, and Anand's unique acting style is widely celebrated.

He is said to have been inspired by Hollywood's Gregory Peck, but his own casual style and the signature nod of his head while delivering lines were often imitated by fans.

Anand refused to retire from Bollywood, often telling interviewers he would work till his last breath. He was working on a new film at the time of his death.

"An era has come to an end," Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan wrote on Twitter. "Dev Anand leaves a void never perhaps to be filled again ... his never-give-up belief, his joy of life." — Reuters

Detour 2011: Use-less or useless

Posted: 03 Dec 2011 03:30 PM PST

View of one of two blocks of the Married Police Quarters. In the courtyard are the larger installations as well as a platform dressed like a Chinese Opera stage where "live" music performances take place at night. With guest artists from Germany, Belgium, Korea and Japan the idea is to share Hong Kong culture.

DEC 4 — I spent Friday afternoon skulking along the corridors of the Police Married Quarters (PMQ) in Hollywood Road.

My friend enquired by text message if I had decided to surrender myself for overspending at the recently-opened Gap store nearby. I doubt the ghosts of police past would be interested in my misdemeanours but I bet my husband would be more than happy to lock up my credit card.

What I was doing there, however, was checking out the premises, curious about how folks would have lived there 60 years ago, from 1951 until 2000.

Only later that night while surfing the Net did I learn that the present Chief Executive Donald Tsang and his brother, a former police chief, grew up on the fourth floor of Block B.

The site itself was originally home to the Central School which relocated there in 1889 as the first government school to provide primary and secondary Western-style education to the public. The premises was destroyed during World War Two and demolished in 1948 to make way for the PMQ.

What I was less enthusiastic about was the ongoing annual design festival that was occupying the premises — but this was my chance to get inside.

The Handsome Co. team believes thought and attention goes into every industrial design, recreating taxi light shells in porcelain to highlight their understated beauty. Visitors are invited to take them home on the last day of the exhibition.

So it was a pleasant surprise when I found myself intrigued by the design ideas exhibited inside each of the former flats.

Detour 2011, themed Use-less, is a brilliant collaboration — breathing life into historical space while educating the public about responsible consumerism.

The series of exhibitions, installations, workshops and performances takes the visitor away from sterile, white open gallery-like spaces to the musty rooms and dark corridors of the PMQ.

Initially targeted for redevelopment (read: tear down and build shiny skyscraper/ luxury apartment block), PMQ will, from 2014, become a design hub housing studios for artists and designers and retail space to showcase their products as well as public spaces.

I get a tingle imagining a similar fate for Pudu Jail, the National Art Museum and the former KTM Railway Station. If only.

At the festival, there is something to see everywhere you turn: wavy wrought iron windows, narrow kitchens separated from each flat by a corridor, a flat filled with a mountain of sawdust , another with drinking straws reached from floor to ceiling, like a spiderweb.

The Currywurst inspired the creation of compost-filled cotton nets in the shape of sausages, to be used for sowing seeds.

Some of the more interesting installations include a food cart pulled by a bicycle, titled Waste in a Wurst.

Trust my Malaysian eye to mistake it for an ice kacang cart but what it was was a sausage-making machine used to make sausages of compost derived from food waste (then stuffed into a cotton net, resembling a sausage).

Seeds are then sown on the top of the sausage. Designed by KaCaMA Design Lab, inspiration came in the form of the Currywurst sausage the three design graduates from Hong Kong Polytechnic University saw everywhere during the Design Exchange in Berlin.

The Enlightening Garden by Seiko Mori from Japan highlights how we discard drinking straws with abandon. She created a garden to symbolise the life of a lighting plant using drinking straws and LED lights.

There are also some fun workshops to attend. The Useless Cloth is to raise awareness on fabric wastage.

Participants are encouraged to bring in their old garments and will be taught to make tote bags and accessories.

The paper-folding pinhole camera workshop by artist Martin Cheung is bound to be a major attraction as he teaches participants — using just one piece of paper sans glue — to form a pinhole camera.

They will also be taught photo exposure techniques and how to develop their photos in a darkroom. I will leave you with photos of a few installations.

Do put Detour 2011 on your itinerary if you happen to be in town. Not only will the PMQ be worth your time but trawling the steep, narrow streets of Central after that will lead you to interesting boutiques, cafes and galleries.

Detour 2011 is on until Dec 11. Visit http://detour.hk/ for details.

* The views expressed here are the personal opinion of the columnist.

This is where they lived. Chief Executive Donald Tsang spent his childhood in a single room flat like this one. At the rear is a balcony and bathroom.

Umno vs. Najib

Posted: 03 Dec 2011 03:24 PM PST

Umno vs. Najib

* Wan Saiful Wan Jan ialah ketua eksekutif Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (www.IDEAS.org.my)

* Pandangan di atas hanyalah pandangan peribadi penulis.

Mukhriz mahu wakil rakyat Umno buat akujanji elak khianati parti

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 02:59 AM PST

Zahid: 50 peratus kemenangan jamin jika wakil rakyat selesai masalah

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 01:58 AM PST
