Ronaldinho hat-trick lifts Flamengo to 5-4 win

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 07:04 AM PDT

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 28 — Ronaldinho scored a hat-trick as Flamengo overcame a three-goal deficit to beat South American champions Santos 5-4 away in an extraordinary Brazilian championship match.

The former Barcelona and AC Milan forward, leading scorer in the championship with eight goals, netted the equaliser and an 82nd minute winner as Flamengo fought back after Santos had raced to a 3-0 lead in 26 minutes.

Borges scored two goals for the hosts before Brazil's teenage forward Neymar weaved his way past four markers to add a brilliant third in Wednesday's match.

Flamengo pulled one back when Ronaldinho opened his account, taking advantage of a slip by Santos goalkeeper Rafael to score from close range, then Thiago Neves notched another for the visitors.

Brazil midfielder Elano missed a penalty for Santos before Deivid headed Flamengo's equaliser from a corner, all before the end of the first half.

The drama continued after the break as Neymar put Santos back in front, before Ronaldinho took command, equalising with a free kick which went under the wall, then scoring the winner with an angled shot.

Flamengo are third on 24 points from 12 games, four behind leaders Corinthians. — Reuters

Jailed journalists write for freedom in Turkey

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 03:10 AM PDT

ISTANBUL, July 28 – Dozens of Turkish journalists writing for the Tutuklu Gazete newspaper have very personal reasons to be concerned about media freedom in their EU-candidate country. They are all in jail.

From prison cells across Turkey, they contributed articles to a special edition protesting against restrictions on freedom of expression which have drawn criticism from the United States and Europe.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton voiced concern about the issue on a visit to Istanbul this month, saying it was not in Turkey's interest to be "cracking down".

A report by the Council of Europe, an intergovernmental pan-European human rights body, has called for urgent measures to address a "particularly worrying" situation for media freedom.

Writing from jail in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, Kurdish newspaper editor Vedat Kursun says it is particularly tough for journalists who write about a 27-year-old Kurdish separatist insurgency in which more 40,000 people have died.

"Journalists in this country have been put in a situation where they virtually can't practice their profession. They always feel the cold breath of the authorities on their neck," he wrote in Tutuklu Gazete, published as a free supplement in leftist Turkish newspapers on Sunday.

Kursun was sentenced to 166 years in jail for membership of the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), viewed by the US and EU as a terrorist group. He, like other journalists, says he was only convicted for articles in his newspaper.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan rejects such an argument, saying journalists are not in jail because of what they wrote. They are generally prosecuted under widely implemented laws against membership of terrorist groups or spreading their propaganda.

Since coming to power in 2002, Erdogan's government has earned praised internationally for political reforms aimed at bringing Turkey in line with European Union political norms, and for liberalising an economy that now ranks among the fastest-growing in the world.

However, the ruling AK Party, which polled 50 per cent of the vote to win a third term in power in parliamentary elections in June, also faces accusations of trying to tame the media and smother opposition to its power.

Turkey has fallen to 138th out of 178 countries reviewed for the World Press Freedom Index by Reporters without Borders, a media freedom pressure group, from 101st in 2007 due to the proliferation of lawsuits.

Tutuklu Gazete's publication date of July 24 was symbolic. It marked the anniversary of the official abolition of censorship in the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Abdul Hamid II at the time of the Young Turks revolution in 1908.

"Resistance to Censorship," the newspaper proclaimed in a front-page headline above a picture of people protesting against media restrictions at a demonstration attended by thousands in Istanbul earlier this year.

The Turkish Journalists Union (TGS), which organised the project, says the paper is part of a year-old campaign to secure the release of 70 jailed journalists and prompt changes in the anti-terrorism laws.

"If journalists are prosecuted on charges of being terrorists due to their professional activities, it means there must be a mistake in those laws and they must be changed," TGS Chairman Ercan Ipekci told Reuters.

"We hope public opinion will be influenced by these articles and that this wave of public opinion will hit parliament and that it will make the necessary changes in the laws," he said.

The organisers wrote to all the jailed journalists about the project and published articles from 39 of them. For now, there are no plans for further editions of the paper.

While charges of links to the PKK predominate in the prosecution of reporters, some of the journalists in jail are among hundreds of people detained over a series of alleged coup plots against Erdogan's government.

Among them is the Kanalturk television channel founder Tuncay Ozkan, who has been in jail since September 2008 charged with seeking to overthrow the government in a trial which is still continuing. He says his opposition to the ruling AK Party is the reason for his prosecution.

"I was jailed for conducting my profession without compromise, for exercising my right to freedom of thought and dissidence," Ozkan said in an article written from Silivri prison, near Istanbul in northwest Turkey.

TGS says journalists are the subject of some 4,000 investigations. Many of those are for articles about the alleged anti-government plots of the shadowy "Ergenekon" network since the investigation was launched four years ago. Some 2,000 cases have been opened against reporters.

Well known journalist Ahmet Slk was detained earlier this year. The co-author of a book about Ergenekon, Slk faces a jail sentence of up to four years on a charge of "violating the secrecy of an investigation".

Turkey has long faced criticism from campaigners over its human rights record. Writers including Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk and slain Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink were prosecuted under laws restricting freedom of expression.

A Reporters Without Borders report in June called on Turkish authorities to boost the status of journalistic principles in the law to counterbalance the protection of legal confidentiality, state security and personal privacy.

"A legislative straitjacket continues to stifle journalists," the report said.

"Reporting of some topics is still routinely punished by the courts. Journalists are arrested and tried for doing their job or expressing an opinion," it said. – Reuters

Facebook tackles face-recognition privacy concern

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 01:31 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, July 28 — Facebook has made it easier for users to opt out of its controversial facial-recognition technology for photographs, an effort to address concerns that it had violated consumers' privacy.

The deployment of "Tag Suggestions" technology — designed to speed up the process of labelling friends in photos — had renewed concerns about how the world's largest social network with 750 million members handles privacy.

The technology scans newly uploaded photos, compares faces in those snapshots with previous pictures, then tries to match faces and suggest name tags. When a match is found, Facebook alerts the person uploading the photos and invites them to "tag", or identify, the person in the photo.

Connecticut Attorney-General George Jepsen said in a letter to Facebook last month that it compromised consumers' rights to privacy by analysing faces in photographs posted on the website, then cataloguing them.

Facebook has since met with Jepsen, and this month began running ads on users' home pages telling them about the feature and allowing them to count themselves out of its use entirely. Should users opt out, any facial recognition data that had been collected will be deleted.

"Facebook has made significant changes that will provide better service and greater privacy protection to its users, not only in Connecticut, but across the country," Jepsen said in a statement. "The company has been cooperative and diligent in its response."

Facebook, which verified that those ads have run, has said the feature is available in most countries. Automated photo-tagging suggestions are made only when new photos are added, only friends are suggested, and users can disable the feature in their privacy settings, the company has said.

"People across the country using Facebook will be more aware of our personalised privacy settings, and how they can be used to benefit their experience on the site," said Tim Sparapani, director of public policy at Facebook. "We hope that people on Facebook will find the results to be helpful and useful."

You in or out?

While other photo software and online services such as Google Inc's Picasa and Apple Inc's iPhoto use facial recognition technology, the use of the technique on an Internet network such as Facebook raises thorny issues.

For instance, iPhoto gives users control over facial recognition by letting them elect whether or not to use the technology with personal photo collections. Facebook's, in contrast, operated independently and was automatically enabled, analysing faces across a swathe of newly uploaded pictures.

The lack of notifications about the wider roll-out of the feature had spurred concerns among privacy advocates, who argue it should be up to users to allow it. A group of organisations had filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission requesting an investigation.

Such a system also raised questions about which personally identifiable information — such as email addresses — could become associated with photos in Facebook's database.

Addressing other concerns, the social network has also streamlined the process for reporting fake accounts or imposters, after Connecticut Representative Kim Rose complained to Jepsen about the difficulty of removing an account that had been falsely labelled as hers and that asked for money.

In response, Facebook had set up a "roadblock" system that froze accounts reported until they were verified, had made changes to the reporting system, and had speeded up response times, Jepsen said in his statement.

Facebook also has instituted direct links to user contact forms and an automatic email response to help direct users to the correct mechanism when trying to report an imposter or fake profile.

"Although this measure won't totally stop fraudulent pages from being created, it will have a significant impact on reducing the amount of time they are active," the attorney-general said. — Reuters

Which superhero power would you like most of all?

LONDON, July 28 — Of all the powers of all the superheroes in all the world, film fans think the most impressive is the quick healing ability of Wolverine, according to a poll.

Wolverine's power, which allows him to recover from almost any injury or disease, came top with 22 per cent of the vote, followed by the telepathic powers of Professor X, another X-Men character, at 21 per cent.

Superman's ability to fly was third while Spiderman fell from hero to zero in the poll, with only three per cent of respondents believing web-spinning skills to be worthy of the ultimate superhero.

The survey, carried out by the European film rental service Lovefilm, questioned 3,000 members about special powers that would make the ultimate superhero.

"Having worked with comic books for most of my career and naturally being a huge fan of superhero films, a few of the results really surprised me," said comic artist Jack Lawrence.

Of course we all wish we had the claws of Wolverine or cruised along in the Batmobile, but I really expected Superman and Spiderman's powers to feature higher up the list." The top 10 powers were: 1. Accelerated healing - Wolverine, X-Men (22 per cent) 2. Telepathic/psionic powers - Professor X, X-Men (21 per cent) 3. Power of flight - Superman, Superman (15 per cent) 4. Super-strength - The Hulk, The Hulk (11 per cent) 5. Invisibility - Sue Storm, Fantastic Four (8 per cent) 6 (joint). Weather control - Storm, X-Men (7 per cent) and Flame-on! - The Human Torch, Fantastic Four (7 per cent) 8. Supersenses - Daredevil, Daredevil (4 per cent) 9. Web-slinging - Spiderman, Spiderman (3 per cent) 10. Super-speed - Dash, The Incredibles (2 per cent). — Reuters

Ryan Gosling takes on comedy to cure the blues

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 06:19 AM PDT

NEW YORK, July 28 — Ryan Gosling claims that after his last film, the moody "Blue Valentine," it took him several months to "acclimate out of the experience" and he paid a visit to the doctor.

"He wrote me a prescription and I looked at it and it said, 'Do a comedy'," the 30-year-old Canadian actor said, adding the story he has been repeating to reporters while promoting his new comedy, "Stupid, Crazy, Love," is absolutely true.

It's hard to tell at times when Gosling is joking, telling such stories while wearing a perpetual, evasive smirk. Yet he is transparently playing for laughs in his first comedic role opposite "The Office" star Steve Carell that has gained strong buzz ahead of its release in the United States tomorrow.

The reason for the turnabout for an actor who has so far mostly stayed away from big-budget Hollywood movies after impressing critics with serious indie dramas, was Carell, he said.

"He makes everyone funny. So selfishly I knew that if I was going to ever do a comedy, if I was going to lose my comedic virginity, I wanted to lose it to Steve," a softly-spoken Gosling told Reuters in an interview.

"Crazy, Stupid, Love" shows off Gosling as a suave seducer of women who tries to help the despondent, shabby character played by Carell regain his machismo after separating from his wife, played by Julianne Moore. Also co-starring Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei, the romantic comedy is a big box office summer hope for studio Warner Bros.

Gosling described himself as "nervous" to act in what he sees as his first real comedy, spending much of the film dropping unsubtle lines to women in bars, dressing in designer clothes and even ripping off his shirt to reveal a body so appealing it leaves Stone exclaiming it must have been digitally enhanced.

"It's like a James Cameron programme called Avatar and you wear a motion-controlled suit," he joked, explaining his impressive abdomen for the scene. But he did not use a body double. "I had to exercise a lot."

Initially, he said, he wanted to base the role on Mike "The Situation" Sorrento from the TV reality show "Jersey Shore". But producers balked at the idea — "I thought it would be funny, and they thought it wouldn't be."

He also claims he figured out how to play this character — and indeed each role he plays — by working out "the percentage of Bugs Bunny versus Daffy Duck."

He explained: "Like Dean in 'Blue Valentine' was 80 per cent Daffy and 20 per cent Bugs. And with this (role) I finally got to just play Bugs Bunny — that helped me to think of it in those terms. And Steve was Daffy."

Choosing films like dancing

Cartoon characters aside, Gosling, who is now regarded as one of the top actors of his generation, speaks seriously about why he didn't cash in on his Oscar nomination for "Half Nelson" in 2006 or the popularity of the romantic drama "The Notebook" in 2004 with a big Hollywood movie.

"I felt like I was cashing in, but just not financially. I was able to get more freedom in each next part that I played. So I just kind of gravitated towards that freedom. Money gives you freedom too, it's just what kind of freedom you want."

He did take home a bigger paycheque for "Stupid, Crazy, Love," but "my reasons for wanting to do it were the same. It's like when a song comes on, you want to dance and you don't know why. It just makes you want to dance. That's how I feel and I felt that way about 'Blue' and I felt that way about this."

After starting out at an early age as a dancer on "The Mickey Mouse Club" variety TV show alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake — Aguilera was then the most impressive, he said — he landed parts in a number of TV shows, including one with Carell that was cancelled.

He went on to observe acting titans such as Denzel Washington in his first small movie part in "Remember The Titans," but says Carell has been one of the best.

That may soon change. He will soon be seen in the George Clooney film, "The Ides of March" among several upcoming titles, but said he doesn't have any serious career plan.

"I just try to take it one step at a time," he said. — Reuters

The evaporation of fear

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 05:22 PM PDT

JULY 28 — That feeling in the pit of the stomach or a dry throat and a quickening heartbeat; all of us have recognised and experienced fear. The expectation of bad things happening sometimes is worse than the actual experience.

Some fears are universal; fear of failure or a fear of making a fool of oneself, and then there are fears that certain societies face as a result of the peculiarities of historical, cultural and political factors interacting.

To a visitor to Malaysia even a decade ago, it might have seemed that here was a model society, with different races and communities living in perfect harmony and getting along without rancour or anger.

But scratch the surface and you find a populace for whom a wide range of subjects were off limits, or if discussed at all in public, would be in whispers with nervous looks over the shoulder.

The performance of the government, corruption and cronyism, racial stereotyping and affirmative action were a few such topics. The quintessential Malaysian fear was one of attracting too much attention. This fear was the result of two main influences; multiculturalism and the "big brother is watching you" syndrome.

Living in a multicultural society, it was and remains important to not offend the sensitivities of those with a different religion, dress code, eating habits or language. So while it was important to keep certain topics away from discussion out of respect or fear, it was equally important not to flaunt one's personal beliefs in the face of others. Put another way, it was not cool to attract too much attention to oneself.

The big brother syndrome was a real threat, what with Ops Lalang, the Special Branch, the religious police, the Sedition Act, the PPPA, ISA, OSA and the Emergency Ordinance.

Honest debate was frowned upon on the back of a compliant media and opposing points of view were not tolerated. Oppositional politics was the preserve of the brave and the government knew best.

For ordinary people again the underlying fear was that of attracting too much attention for whatever reason because it could land one into serious trouble. There was room for only one personality cult.

But something has changed. It seems that almost no topic is taboo anymore. It seems that nobody is afraid anymore, either of offending others in society, or of the powers that be. Malaysia is still multicultural, and all the same laws are still in place, so why this sudden vociferousness?

It's not as if the government has changed tack. When required, it still uses the same heavy-handed tactics evidenced by the EO 6, and some elements of the vernacular mainstream media still have a new demon every week to instil fear, whether it is the Jews, the Communists, the Christians or the Indonesians.

The single biggest defining change has come from the availability of information from the Internet. Not just the alternative local media, but also an awareness or global issues, other societies and economies, and alternative models of governance. The democratisation of information allows for the formation of a rainbow of opinions, each with its own logical and emotional underpinnings.

In Malaysia, this exposure to information in times of economic hardship led to an explosion of anger as to how much of what was wrong with local governance was hidden from so many for so long.

Simultaneously, the lack of censorship and action against anti-establishment commentators online, combined with the anonymity of the medium, led to a real evaporation of fear of consequences for those voicing their opinion.

As long as the mainstream media does not allow this anger an outlet, rising Internet penetration will make online news portals not only more popular, but will also tend to lead them to be dominated by opposition voices.

In fact it can be argued that the fear genie is truly out of the bottle and it is too late to turn back the clock. For the people who turned up for Bersih, it seemed to be as much about challenging their own fears as it was about free and fair elections .

In light of the recent battering of authoritarian regimes around the world at the hands of their people, any attempt now to circumscribe legitimate grievances and anger in an authoritarian manner may have drastic repercussions on the powers that be.

This movement will inevitably also change the way multiculturalism has been practised in Malaysia. Increasingly, perceived communal injustices will trump interracial respect every time for as long as the people identify politicians primarily by their race and not their performance.

The hope is that over time existing social ties, customs and history will restore cordiality between the various groups, while simultaneously holding politicians to account in creating a just, fair and transparent government that works for all citizens.

Of course, I will still continue to be afraid of my boss.

EO dan ISA: Sempurnalah satu kezaliman

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 05:14 PM PDT

Selamat tinggal zaman kuno
