Japan’s fake food is real deal for tourists

Alberto Pellegrini doesn't speak or read Japanese, a deficit that threatened to leave the Italian tourist starving in a nation famous for its gastronomic delights.

Fortunately for the hungry honeymooner, restaurants across this food-obsessed nation - where English menus range from sparse to non-existent - often display their wares in the form of intricately-made plastic replicas.

The sight of a giant hotdog slathered in condiments doesn't faze the average Japanese restaurant goer, and these fake food parades are often so similar to the real thing that they almost dare potential customers to take a bite.

A sudsy-looking beer, perfectly glazed sushi and indestructible deep-fried pork cutlets, known as tonkatsu, are a common sight on the streets of neon-lit Tokyo and even the smallest towns.

"It can really help," Pellegrini said as he and his new wife combed lunch venues in Tokyo's upscale Ginza shopping district.

"I point at the food and I just say 'I want this, I want that'. It is easier because choosing from a list (in Japanese) is impossible."

But that sumptuous-looking futomaki has less-than-tasty origins.

"The original craftsman was working for doctors and making models for pathological studies, such as skin diseases and human organs, before he was asked to make food samples for a restaurant," says Yasunobu Nose, a senior editor at the leading Nikkei business daily who authored a book about food models.

That turn of events in the early 1920s set off a food revolution in Japan where the idea spread rapidly as eating out soared in popularity and rural people flocked to the cities.

Unused to what city restaurants had to offer, the models gave country dwellers and locals alike a quick visual rundown of the chef's specialties before stepping inside an eatery.

Nearly a century later, "Japanese have developed a sense of getting information from three-dimensional signs", Nose said, adding that plastic food also has a limited presence in neighbouring China and South Korea.

"You're calculating lots of things - what kind of side dishes are there, how big is the meal, and is it economical?" he said.

"But for foreign tourists who don't have this literacy, food samples are just something that closely resembles real dishes."

The modern-day alchemy involves making a plastic mould of the real-life food and then adorning it with just the right colours to tantalise the taste buds of passing customers. Iwasaki Co., a leading plastic food maker, has an army of craftspeople who hand paint the moulds, which sell for as much as $100 each, although restaurants can lease a fake hamburger set for about $6 a month.

"Our main customers are restaurant owners, but plastic food samples are increasingly popular among ordinary people," said Takashi Nakai, a spokesman for the company, which started business in 1932 when the samples were made of wax instead of today's more durable plastic.

Iwasaki recently opened two shops in Tokyo where it sells sushi cell-phone charms and bacon-adorned key chains - all with multilingual signs warning that "this is not edible".

The shops also let visitors take a stab at creating their own fake food.

Still, high-end restaurants rarely offer such blatant visual aids, while efforts to transport the idea to the West have been less than successful, Nakai says.

"That's partly because we need real dishes to produce food samples so geographical distance is a hurdle."

Israeli tourist Elda Rozencvaag was not impressed.

"When I see this it makes me feel like I don't want to eat it. It is too weird," he said, staring a plate of perfectly formed sushi.

"It has too many details - even more than in the real dish."

Pellegrini, however, was relieved at the visual guide, even if he's not sure what he'll get.

"I think this is fish," he said, pointing to a plastic squid.

"And this looks like an omelette. But I can't be sure it's an omelette."

It was a fishcake. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 15, 2013.

Suarez denies “I’m staying” claim: Report

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 09:46 AM PDT

August 15, 2013

Unsettled Liverpool striker Luis Suarez denied a report yesterday saying that he had decided to stay at Anfield, according to Japanese media.

The 26-year-old scored with a rocket and provided the ammunition for two quick-fire Diego Forlan goals as Uruguay overpowered Japan 4-2 away in a pulsating friendly.

The Arsenal target had been quoted beforehand as saying in an interview from Japan with the Uruguayan newspaper El Observador that he would stay with Liverpool.

But speaking after masterminding his country to a comfortable win, he denied that he had had a change of heart.

"I didn't say that, maybe someone else did and the main thing is that I am here now with the national team," Japan's Kyodo News quoted him as saying.

Liverpool have had two bids from Arsenal rejected and Suarez has been made to train on his own by manager Brendan Rodgers after accusing the club of breaking promises by refusing to let him leave.

Before the friendly with Japan, Suarez had been quoted as saying: "Right now, because of all the affection of the people, I'll be staying."

On Tuesday, captain Steven Gerrard said he would hate to see Suarez leave Anfield and he was confident that he would not be joining another English club.

Suarez has scored 51 goals in 96 games for Liverpool after joining from Dutch giants Ajax in January 2011 but is keen to leave to fulfil his Champions League ambitions.

The striker was all smiles before kickoff Wednesday – in contrast to the forlorn figure he has cut in recent weeks during his transfer standoff.

A bundle of energy, he wriggled clear down the left before squaring unselfishly for strike partner Forlan to slide home the opener in the 27th minute at Miyagi Stadium.

Moments later Forlan doubled Uruguay's lead, curling home a free-kick from the edge of the box after Suarez had gone to ground following a robust challenge from Maya Yoshida.

Suarez proved a constant menace and scored a deserved goal in the 52nd minute with a venomous strike.

Manchester United's Shinji Kagawa pulled one back for the hosts from close range two minutes later, only for Alvaro Gonzalez to head Uruguay's fourth in the 58th minute as the floodgates threatened to open.

Keisuke Honda fizzed home a superb free-kick in the 72nd minute but Japan had already left themselves too much to do.

"You have to give credit to Uruguay," Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni told reporters.

"They are one of the best teams in the world. They showed that again by reaching the Confederations Cup semi-finals this year."

Japan lost all three of their games at the Confederations Cup in June and a dejected Kagawa said: "We haven't learned our lessons from then. There is still a lot to work on before the World Cup." – AFP, August 15, 2013.

Metalist expelled from Champions League by UEFA

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 09:20 AM PDT

August 15, 2013

Metalist Kharkiv, due to play Schalke 04 in the Champions League playoff round next week, have been kicked out of the competition over a domestic match-fixing case dating back to 2008, UEFA said yesterday.

The decision by UEFA's appeals committee came 10 days after Metalist lost an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Last year's Ukrainian league runners-up will be replaced by Greek side PAOK, the team they beat in the third qualifying round.

Metalist said they would appeal to CAS and a ruling in their favour, which may not come until after the group stage has started, could throw the Champions League into confusion.

"We regret that such a sanction was applied, and we do not agree with it, that's why today we plan to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne," Metalist first vice president Kostyantyn Pyvovarov said in a statement.

"Also, we have appealed to the Supreme Court of Switzerland with the application for suspension of CAS decision.

"I want to remind you that the match, which allegedly took place, was held back in 2008, with the old owners of the club. At the same time, Metalist has won the right to participate in the Champions League 2013/14 in a fair fight.

"Our team, our fans deserve to take part in the main football competition in Europe. I want to assure fans that we will fight for the rights of the club and protect them in accordance with all legal requirements."

Metalist's replacement PAOK will visit Schalke on Aug. 21 with the return on Aug. 27 for a place in the group stage. The UEFA's emergency panel decided to include the Greek side rather than hand Schalke a bye.

The panel also decided that PAOK would not be replaced in the Europa League qualifying round and their opponents Maccabi Tel Aviv would go straight into the group stage.

Metalist were not the only club whose Champions League participation was shrouded in uncertainty.

CAS has already allowed Fenerbahce back into the competition while it considers an appeal from the Turkish club against their two-year ban from European competition over a domestic match-fixing case.

CAS have said they will make a final ruling on Fenerbahce's case by Aug. 28, the day after the Turks play the second leg of their playoff tie against Arsenal.

Fenerbahce have already eliminated Salzburg from the competition.

Earlier this month, CAS upheld a Ukraine Football Federation (FFU) decision to fine Metalist Kharkiv and FC Karpaty US$25,000 each over the manipulation of a match played in April 2008.

The tribunal also confirmed bans of between three and five years on six Metalist players, plus fines of US$10,000 each.

Metalist director Yevhen Krasnikov was banned from any soccer-related activity for five years.

Two Karpaty officials were given suspended bans and ordered to pay "compulsory cash contributions" to the FFU while CAS upheld an appeal by a third official from the club.

CAS said in its ruling that the two clubs "were held liable for the behaviour of their football players or officials under the principle of strict liability." – Reuters, August 15, 2013.

Eating fatty fish weekly can cut risk of rheumatoid arthritis

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 05:10 PM PDT

Latest Update: August 14, 2013 04:10 pm

A new study finds that eating a weekly portion of salmon or other fatty fish, such as trout or mackerel, could reduce your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by more than half. In a study published Monday in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish can cut the risk of chronic inflammatory disease by 52 percent. Prior research from 2009 suggests that consuming fish oils could help reduce inflammation that leads to a variety of diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, researchers highlighted the benefit to long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (Pufa) content in fish. If you prefer lean fish, such as cod or canned tuna, the same benefit could be found in eating four servings a week, the researchers found. Long-term, weekly consumption of any type of fish was associated with a 29 percent lower risk of the disease.

However you'll need to sustain a regular diet of fish for at least 10 years to enjoy the health prevention against the condition, they added.

To reach their findings, head researcher Alicja Wolk and her team analyzed the diets of 32,232 Swedish born between 1914 and 1948. Subjects completed questionnaires about their food intake and lifestyle in 1987 and 1997. Women who consumed at least 0.1g of omega-3 Pufas daily had the 52 percent reduced risk, the study found. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 14, 2013.

Panggil Cina pendatang, MCA buat laporan polis ke atas Papa Gomo

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 01:17 AM PDT

OLEH DIYANA IBRAHIM
August 14, 2013

– 14 Ogos, 2013.

Lee Kuan Yew

Posted: 13 Aug 2013 05:09 PM PDT

August 14, 2013

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim founded Malaysia's largest law partnership before focusing on politics. He was a minister in the Abdullah administration, was in Umno, PKR and last in KITA as its president.

Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) became an easy target for our national and Pakatan Rakyat leaders when he recently commented on how Malaysia was suffering from the effects of its race-based politics.

Their response was typical of Malaysian politicians from both sides of the divide: they hurled personal insults at the ageing Singaporean leader that offered little insight into the real issues.

The Opposition's Karpal Singh and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim put it as A) mind your own business and B) your ideas are no longer useful.

As for the Barisan Nasional, they pointed out that Singapore is also racially biased and therefore unqualified to speak on the subject.

UMNO leaders then loudly proclaimed that the "Malays first" policy is here to stay and that the Malays are not ready for any change. End of story.

I am reluctant to defend LKY as I think he was heartless when he was in power and he punished his opponents too harshly for my liking.

However, I do admire his pragmatic approach to public policies. His strength of conviction and willingness to be unpopular is well known, and it was firmly rooted in his belief that his policies were good for the people.

Like China's Deng Xiaoping, he favoured policies that were practical and useful to the general public.

Deng's famous saying, "It doesn't matter whether a cat is white or black, as long as it catches mice" cleverly encapsulated this practicality.

He understood that a market economy was crucial for his country's survival and competitiveness and gradually guided China away from the ideals of Mao Tse Tung.

LKY took a similarly pragmatic approach when he said that Mandarin and local dialects had to take a back seat as mastering English had to be a top priority for Singapore.

I am not an ideologue myself because ideology seldom solves anything; in fact, I think it brings misery to its believers.

I am inclined to support anything that works and leads to a tangible improvement in people's lives.

Policies that work have measurable results and are mindful of the resources that are needed (policies that use enormous resources and achieve few results are simply no good).

It's obvious to me that we need to give up the present culture of race-based policies, not because LKY said so, but because they simply don't work.

We need to stop doing a disservice to those who are excluded as well as to the Malays who are supposedly the beneficiaries of these policies.

Surely 40 years is enough time for us to see that, collectively, these policies are the mother of all that ails the country.

The simple fact is that Singapore is a first world country today and we are third, in whichever way we define it.

In 1965 Singapore was a small island state that drew its revenue from small ships anchoring at its ports and from several thousand British Navy personnel in Woodlands spending their money there.

There didn't seem to be much for the island to build on but LKY did it.  The world has recognised his contribution to transforming this third world island into a first world metropolis. Only Malaysian leaders do not. I call it envy.

On the other hand, Malaya and later Malaysia started on much happier ground: endowed with among the richest natural resources in Asia, it had public institutions that were respected by many outside the country.

We were the success story of the Commonwealth. Today we are a lot less successful, whichever way we look at it. Some say we are sliding down a slope and picking up speed.

I am not endorsing everything that LKY and other leaders in Singapore have done, and neither am I ignoring the differences—cultural and otherwise—between our two countries.

There are huge differences of course, but we need to admit that in the last 50 years we have done something wrong and they have done something right.

There is no need to suffer from some complex about Singapore and always belittle the old man and other leaders for that matter when they say something about us that is less than flattering.

Shouldn't we learn from how LKY curbed corruption and how he transformed the communist-infested Singaporean universities into what many consider to be among the world's best institutions of higher learning?

If we are honest then we cannot possibly deny LKY's many achievements, and we should be humble enough to listen to him.

I believe our Prime Minister is also a pragmatic leader and so I hope he will not be discouraged from meeting his Singaporean counterpart and LKY to exchange views.

If our PM depends too much on Utusan Malaysia and the old guards, then our prospects will remain dim for the next 50 years.

Then who will we blame for our failures? The Chinese I guess, if they are still around. – August 14, 2013.
