Pizza Hut is returning to Iraq after having pulled out with US troops three years ago. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, April 15, 2014. In a sign of things to come, Pizza Hut has announced the opening of its first restaurant in Iraq, where appetites for Western-style fast food are growing.

After pulling out with US troops in 2011, Pizza Hut has returned to the country, this time within reach of ordinary Iraqi citizens. The former restaurant was located on US military bases.

The new restaurant, which seats 120 diners, is located in the Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq in the Majidi Mall, Erbil, and is the first of five restaurants to open in Iraq this year.

Just three years after the US pulled their troops from the country, and 11 years after the start of the Iraq War, the country is opening up to Western brands, even building American and British knock-offs like Burger Queen, Burger Friends, Costa Rica Coffee and KFG.

Likewise, the oil-rich country and the stability of Northern Iraq are also eyed by the hotel industry with two major brands making moves into the region.

Marriott will be opening two properties in Kurdistan this year, one a 200-room upscale hotel, the other a 75-unit Marriott Executive Apartments property.

Last fall, Hyatt also announced plans to open its first Hyatt-branded hotel in the same region by 2017.

"There is great potential for growth in Iraq and throughout the Middle East, and we look forward to introducing the Hyatt brand to guests visiting the region," said the regional senior vice president for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts Peter Norman. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 15, 2014.

Why it’s unlikely Alan Pardew will be given the boot at Newcastle United

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 01:27 PM PDT

April 15, 2014

A shadow has been cast over Alan Pardew's Newcaste United career. - April 15, 2014A shadow has been cast over Alan Pardew's Newcaste United career. - April 15, 2014Within any normal football club, Alan Pardew would be on the ropes. He would be praying for the sound of that final bell just to avoid one more, and the final, knockout blow.

But then this is not a normal football club, this is Newcastle United and Alan Pardew, well, he hasn't exactly got a normal job.

It is amazing that Pardew remains in his job after three and a half years on Tyneside, but the fact that he does, suggests that until he starts shooting new born puppies on the touchline, he is unlikely to be moved on.

Many pundits and fans alike are pointing to that infamous headbutt on Hull City's David Meyler as the moment that the club's season took a turn for the worse and where Mike Ashley should have cut Pardew lose.

But if you look a little closer, there are many other instances prior to that debacle in March which under any other ownership, Pardew would have been shown the door.

The relegation battle last season after finishing 5th the previous year, the 6-0 thrashing against Liverpool (he's still yet to keep his promise of sorting that one out) or his abysmal record in the derby fixture against Sunderland: one win in seven and not forgetting three straight defeats with two consecutive 3-0 defeats at home.

At any other club, Pardew would have been shown the door. In fact, managers this season have walked for a lot less and had Pardew gone last summer, he could have had few complaints.

But of course, he did not. There were rumours and an end of season meeting last summer when his job was reportedly on the line but nine months later he is still there and the credit of the 5th place finish two seasons ago has all but ran out.

But despite the turmoil now engulfing the club, Pardew has a unique long term contract and the backing of the owner.

Mike Ashley (pic, below) has shown time and time again that he cares little for the thoughts of the fans - Sports Direct Arena, Wonga and Joe Kinnear are all examples where the billionaire has brutally reminded the Geordie faithful of just who is in charge.

And the fact that he chooses to stick by his buddy through all the atrocities listed above should worry Newcastle United fans.

Firstly, sacking Pardew would mean Ashley admitting he was wrong and that is something he does not like to do.

Secondly, it would mean giving into the fan's demands and again, Mike does not like anyone telling him what to do.

Thirdly, as long as Pardew can keep the club in the Premier League then that is all Ashley cares about - he knows that he will still get the core support coming through the doors week in, week out. But then that revenue is only a sprinkling to what the TV money is worth.

But more alarmingly, since Pardew took over we have seen Ashley get rid of any players with a voice.

Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton and Alan Smith were all shown the door, along with the rest of the old guard like Andy Carroll, Steve Harper, Jonas Gutierrez and Peter Lovenkrands.

It seems that anyone with any desire to speak out against the direction the club is taking, or anyone with influence or perhaps just affection and loyalty to the club and its fans, is out on their ear.

And with the reports of Fabricio Coloccini telling Pardew exactly what he thinks of him after the defeat to Stoke City, Newcastle United fans should be very worried about what happens next.

The reality is that Pardew's job is safe - even if the club drops out of the top 10. But it is clear that he has lost the dressing room and based on Ashley's past record, that is very worrying for the core of the team.

It would not be a surprise if Ashley, in a Stalin-esque manner, simply sold on those voicing their concerns.

With the likelihood of Hatem Ben Arfa, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Mathieu Debuchy, Shola Ameobi and Loic Remy all leaving in the summer, the club is in no place to get rid of those core players voicing their concerns.

But if Pardew stays, then how can Coloccini remain at the club let alone as captain? And he is unlikely to be the only one unhappy with Pardew.

Cheick Tiote and Tim Krul, arguably The Magpies' two best players, cannot be too happy at the lack of ambition at the club.

However, there is also the argument that no matter how much your chairman backs the manager, if the gaffer has lost the players then his days are numbered. But then Ashley has never been one to stick to the "chairman's guidebook".

At the moment Pardew is acting like a cornered animal and his attack on the local press is a sign of desperation, the next step would be to attack the fans which at any normal club would be his final act before being shown the door. But if he can keep Ashley on his side, Pardew may just get through this too.

And if Pardew keeps a hold of his job, the ramifications on the playing squad could be huge.

The likelihood is that he will still be here next season and the future of those voicing their concerns... well, they might be lucky enough to escape the graveyard of ambition and be moved on. – April 15, 2014.

Rain interrupts Malaysian Open first round

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 08:49 AM PDT

April 14, 2014

Montenegro's Danka Kovinic beat Belgium's An-Sophie Mestach in two sets today before heavy rain caused the rest of the first round of the BMW Malaysian Open to be called off.

All other first-round matches scheduled for today will be played tomorrow, including that of Czech third seed Karolina Pliskova, who won the tournament last year, marking her first and only WTA singles title so far.

She will play against Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia.

In the only completed match today, Kovinic, who ranks 140th in the world, easily defeated Mestach 6-4, 6-2 in Kuala Lumpur. Mestach ranks 127.

Later in the day, Japan's eight-seeded Ayumi Morita had just begun her match against Lyudmyla Kichenok of the Ukraine, leading 1-0 in the first set when rain interrupted the game.

The fourth singles match to be called off pitted Ons Jabeur of Tunsia against Italy's Giulia Gatto-Monticone.

Former world number one Venus Williams of the US was expected to play in the tournament but has pulled out, reportedly due to a throat infection.

First-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, who ranks 10th, will not play until later in the week. – AFP, April 14, 2014.

The beauty of the beauty industry

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 12:32 AM PDT

April 14, 2014

Malaysians spend an estimated RM1.6 billion annually on cosmetics, with skin care products being the most purchased item. – File pic, April 14, 2014.Malaysians spend an estimated RM1.6 billion annually on cosmetics, with skin care products being the most purchased item. – File pic, April 14, 2014.It could be the gorgeous young woman with flawless skin promoting the "magic" anti-ageing cream on billboards, or the leggy supermodel cat walking on a high heeled designer shoes for a magazine photoshoot.

It could also be the curvaceous K-pop idol curving (or curveting) on your television screen or the face of the plain Jane who had lost some kilos after a treatment at a slimming centre posted in your Facebook page.

The truth is these days physical beauty is paraded and idolised. One cannot escape this yearning to appear immaculate, prompting a desperate desire in many, especially among the fairer sex, to pursue a beautiful face and the dream figure.

Undeniably, this craving is what has been feeding and nurturing the ever flourishing beauty industry all over the world.

The Beauty Company, a UK-based consultant company on brand and product strategy, concluded in its research that the beauty industry has been the most consistent throughout the economic downturn and recovery cycle.

A local beauty industry practitioner Selina Goh, in concurring with this finding, said "it is an industry that is less affected by the economic cycle".

The Glow Exhibition Management Project Director said beauty has become a necessity for most people to the extend that some women could not even leave their rooms without make up, and men too were actually grooming themselves.

"In addition to that, nowadays people are living a hectic life and therefore massage and spa services are seen important in rejuvenating the body and looks.

"The spa business is getting more and more competitive that one just need to walk through any row of shops nearby to find at least one, or two, spa or beauty salon," she said.

Goh stressed that the industry, which is associated closely with health and wellness, is developing fast globally. In staying concurrent, local beauty professionals are urged to catch up in terms of latest developments in the industry and skills.

Developing qualified beauty therapist

The recent Beauty Trade Exhibition for beauty professionals, held from March 24-27 at the Putra World Trade Centre, focused on improving industry skills and quality of beauty therapists.

Among activities held were workshops on skill enhancement by renowned speakers from the UK, namely trained aroma therapist and reflexologist Christine Fisk, holistic therapy practitioner Julia McCarthy and pre and post sports massage expert Liam Harkness.

This year about 200 companies including from South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore participated in the exhibition, attracting over 8,700 beauty professionals from all over the country and the region.

As organiser of the event since 2012, Goh saw that there was much room for local beauty practitioners to refine their skills and upgrade their centres or products, particularly in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

She also felt that the spa and beauty salon industry, which rely heavily on foreign workers, is in pressing demand to develop more local masseuses and practitioners, as well as shaping its own identity.

"There are still many spas in Malaysia that promote Thai and Bali (concept) spa. Actually we also have traditional massage such as for women in confinement, those very traditional Malay massage. However, it is difficult to find these experts probably because no one takes the initiative to promote them," she told Bernama.

Spa therapist training

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture in its website stated that the spa industry generated RM20.7 million revenue in 2011 and was projected to contribute RM6.7 million for Malaysia's yearly income. The industry is estimated to spawn more than 6,000 jobs by 2020.

Realising the importance of developing more quality spas and producing local therapists for the leisure and travel industry in the country, the government had started conducting a six month spa therapist training programme since 2012.

Participant, Rusnija Ridwan, 28, explained that the training comprised of 3 months in class learning at a spa academy, followed by another 3-month practical training in any of the ministry's listed three to five star hotel's spa.

Originally in the marketing line, Rusnija said the training is very beneficial for any keen Malaysians especially youngsters to build their careers as professional masseurs or beauty therapists. Upon completion of the course, trainees are given opportunity to gain experience working in an entrenched spa for 2 years.

"Among other things, we learn how to do facial, manicure and pedicure, body massage and physiotherapy, spa receptions, and communicating in the English language.

"I have been in the spa industry for five years and I believe that these skills can help me to go far in the industry," said Rusnija who is under training at the Energy Academy in Seri Kembangan.

Currently only five spa academies throughout the country offered the free training programme.

Local cosmetics

Meanwhile, in the cosmetics department, Malaysians spend an estimated RM1.6 billion annually on cosmetics, with skin care products being the most purchased item. (Statistic provided by Asia-Pacific Cosmetics and Toiletries Market Overview 2010).

Quoting the official portal of Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), the total market for cosmetics was valued at RM321.2 million with imports of cosmetics and toiletries accounting for 72.3% of the domestic consumption in 2012.

Amid the large number of imported cosmetics and toiletry products circulating the local market, established brands from Europe and US emerge as favourites among Malaysians.

However, Goh said local cosmetics brands have been steadily gaining the public's trust. She pointed out that many of Malaysian cosmetics manufacturers have been exporting their products to countries as far as Europe, Australia and China.

"It shows that we do have manufacturers who are doing fairly well. Their brands have reached a standard that they can now compete with foreign products.

"I'm sure if a product is very effective, plus with good packaging and branding, people would not mind buying even if it is a local product," she said.

The beauty industry has a huge potential as a revenue earner and thus it is time for Malaysia to boost its participation in the sector. – Bernama, April 14, 2014.

For Mexico’s hottest drug balladeer, music has a cost

He is considered the highest representative of the 'Altered Movement', born in 2009 in the Northern State of Sinaloa, which describes in detail the adventures of traffickers. – AFP pic, April 14, 2014."El Komander" struts on stage, pours expensive whisky into a fan's mouth and sings about grenade launchers – just another wild night for a Mexican singer who has faced bans for eulogizing drug lords.

Wearing a black leather jacket and military fatigue pants, Alfredo Rios took his show to 5,500 people in Texcoco, in the state of Mexico, a region of 15 million people enduring a spike in murders this year.

The man with the short-cropped hair and beard is among the most popular performers of "narco-corridos" – musical histories of the life and death of drug kingpins sung to a polka-like beat, driven by an accordion, guitar, drums and tuba.

The genre has gained many fans among Hispanics who live across the border in the United States. Rios appeared in the US documentary "Narco Cultura," which describes the cross-border fascination with Mexico's drug culture.

Lately, though, the thirty-something star has been less than popular with the authorities, especially in states that have struggled to tame violence.

With songs like "100 Gunshots to the Armor," "The Executioner" and "New Mafia," Rios was slapped with a record 100,000-peso (RM24,800) fine last year following a concert in the northern state of Chihuahua, an epicentre of deadly cartel turf wars.

More recently, he was banned from performing on Friday in another region beset by a surge in violence, the central state of Morelos south of Mexico City. Authorities accused him of promoting violence.

Concert organizers canceled his May 1 show in the neighboring state of Puebla at the request of authorities.

In an interview with AFP, Rios said his songs merely reflect the reality of drug violence in Mexico.

"I sing party and fiesta songs. I'm not going to break the law. If they decide that I can't give a concert, I won't do it," he said.

"I don't promote anybody. My music simply is music. My words don't come from space or Mars. It is what we Mexicans talk about," he told reporters.

AK-47 rhythm

On a recent Friday night at a Texcoco equestrian arena, El Komander's set list included a song about armored cars, AK-47 rifles and grenade launchers.

His band wore red charro (Mexican cowboy) suits emblazoned with his stage name, with the letter K in the shape of an AK-47 assault rifle, known in Mexico as "cuerno de chivo," or ram's horn.

"We are fans of corridos and I don't understand because they canceled El Komander's show. His lyrics are not threats. The threat is already in the streets," said Ivan Pimentel, a 31-year-old shopkeeper who attended the show with his 10-year-old son.

As Rios performed, more than a dozen bodyguards watched the stage. Two stayed very close to him when fans approached the star.

It can be a dangerous lifestyle. Some 50 narco-corrido performers have been murdered in Mexico since drug violence surged in 2006.

No more Chapo

Rios is part of the Movimiento Alterado, or Agitated Movement, which appeared in 2009 in the northern state of Sinaloa, home of jailed Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

The movement is known for singing the most graphic lyrics about the cartel life. One of the movement's most famous bands, Los Tigres del Norte, has had shows cancelled as well.

In the music video for "New Mafia," Rios mimics a scene from the mob movie "Scarface," snorting from a mountain of cocaine on a desk with a pistol in hand.

Rios has sung about Guzman, Mexico's most wanted man who was captured in February, and Knights Templar leader Nazario Moreno, who was killed by soldiers last month.

But when asked whether he would compose a new song about El Chapo, Rios said: "The way things are right now, I don't think so." – AFP, April 14, 2014.

Arcade Fire brings in Debbie Harry to close Coachella, slams VIP policy

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 04:03 AM PDT

April 14, 2014

Canadian alternative-rock group Arcade Fire closed the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival yesterday with special guest Debbie Harry but deplored the festival's growing amenities reserved for VIPs only.

Arcade Fire kicked off its set with "Reflektor", the title song from last year's album of the same name, and led into songs such as ""Flashbulb Eyes" and "Rebellion (Lies)".

"We've been coming here for many years now, so it's an honour to be headlining," said the band's frontman, Win Butler (pic).

But Butler took a moment on stage to criticise Coachella's VIP area, saying "people are dreaming to get in there, but it super sucks in there, so don't worry about it".

The band then played its nostalgia-infused track "The Suburbs", changing part of the lyrics to sing "in a field full of freaks and my friends", eliciting cheers from the audience.

The band were later joined by Blondie singer Debbie Harry, who performed her classic 1979 hit "Hearts of Glass" with Arcade Fire's frontwoman Regine Chassagne, and the band's song "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)".

Arcade Fire ended with "Wake Up," joined by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Coachella, which began in 1999 as a festival of indie and alternative rock, has become one of the main attractions of the summer live music season. Headliners in recent years have included Jay Z, Snoop Dogg and Madonna.

It has also acquired the amenities Butler criticised. Along with celebrity attendees have come the VIP area, where guests were treated to pop-up food stalls from upscale Los Angeles restaurant such as Eveleigh, Baco Mercat and Sugarfish.

Outside of the festival itself, the party circuit has burgeoned, with many coming to Palm Springs just to attend the invitation-only events.

This year's parties included those hosted by retail outlet H&M, fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar and private member's club Soho House, which holds a desert edition during the festival.

The third and final day of Coachella's first weekend also featured performances from British DJ Calvin Harris, singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey and rocker Beck.

Harris, who has been at the forefront of electronic dance music, drew the largest crowd of the day and played his hits including "Feels So Close", "We Found Love" and "Summer."

The DJ also played covers from other artists including Capital Cities, Major Lazer, Justice and The Killers, but opted not to include any special guests, who have become part of Coachella's appeal for attendees.

When Harris last performed at Coachella in 2012, pop star Rihanna, who collaborated with the DJ on the dance floor anthem "We Found Love", came out during his set to perform her vocals, but neither she nor the other vocalists on Harris' tracks, including Ellie Goulding, turned up yesterday.

Coachella has become known for its surprise element, delivering up moments such as rapper Snoop Dogg performing with a hologram of late rapper Tupac on stage in 2012.

This year's headlining acts featured the much-anticipated reunion of Outkast on Friday, British rockers Muse on Saturday and Arcade Fire on Sunday, but all three were outdone by R&B singer Pharrell on the surprises front.

Pharrell brought up a host of stars, including Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes.

Rapper Nas also engaged some star power for his set on late Saturday as he performed his seminal album "Illmatic" on the 20th anniversary of its release, bringing in rappers Jay Z and Puff Daddy.

R&B singer Beyonce briefly popped onto stage during her sister Solange Knowles' Saturday set to dance with the music. – Reuters, April 14, 2014.

Glitzy Olivier Awards honours ‘Mormon’, ‘Ghosts’

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 03:52 AM PDT

April 14, 2014

The London production of "Book of Mormon" won best musical at the Olivier Awards yesterday, and its star Gavin Creel (pic) took home the award for best actor in a musical.

A staging of Stephen Sondheim's one-time flop "Merrily We Roll Along" won the award for best musical revival while an adaptation of Ibsen's "Ghosts" was another big winner at Britain's biggest night for theatre.

The play "Chimerica" examining the relations between China and America won best new play award for playwright Lucy Kirkwood and best director award for Lyndsey Turner, and overall was the biggest award winner, taking away five.

"To come to the West End for us was a privilege and this award is an absolute honour," Anne Garefino, co-producer of "Book of Mormon" said in accepting the evening's top award for the London theatre district production of the show by "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

"It's one of those things where you pinch yourself," Creel said after the awards, adding that when he was growing up in Ohio he used to walk around the kitchen dreaming of winning an award, and now he wouldn't have to do that any more.

The award was presented to Garefino and co-producer Sonia Friedman by ABBA singers and creative team Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, after which the show ended with a medley of ABBA hits.

Richard Eyre, the director who mounted the revival of "Ghosts" which got rave reviews and closed three weeks ago after 170 performances, got the nod for having produced the year's best revival of a play.

Lesley Manville was named best actress for her performance as Helene in "Ghosts" while Jack Lowden received the best supporting actor award for his performance as Oswald in the same production.

Manville said that Eyre's adaptation of Ibsen's 1881 play had taken it in a new direction.

"It was very visceral, very emotional and the audience was very engaged," Manville said.

The award for best actor in a play went to Rory Kinnear who attributed his win partly to his character of Iago in Shakespeare's "Othello" being an audience favourite.

"Iago has got a rapport with the audience. People love the villain," Kinnear said.

The star-studded ceremony included appearances by model Kate Moss, opera singers Lesley Garrett and Joseph Calleja, actor James McAvoy and actresses Bernadette Peters, Kathleen Turner, Hayley Atwell and Judi Dench.

Dench had been nominated for best actress for her role in "Peter and Alice" but it was not a great night for Hollywood personalities as she, Jude Law and Tim Hiddleston, all nominees, lost out. – Reuters, April 14, 2014.

Di antara ketiga-tiga calon, Azmin adalah calon "with the most to lose".

– 14 April, 2014.

Academic stress and teen suicide

Suicide among young people is a serious problem. According to the Malaysian Psychiatric Association, seven people kill themselves daily, with young adults making up the majority.

Just last week, 21-year-old Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman student, Corson Lim, jumped from the 14th floor of an apartment in Wangsa Maju.

He was pursuing a bachelor degree in public relations. According to his friends, as reported in the Chinese-language news media, Corson was jovial and cheerful. However, he became depressed just few months before he decided to end his life. It was widely speculated that Corson suffered academic stress and went into depression before examination. It was also reported that he had in many occasions voiced out his intention to quit studies.

Last year, an accounting student from the same college as Corson's committed suicide after having to re-sit exam papers. He too was believed to have suffered from depression.

In Dubai, a 16-year-old boy committed suicide on the day of his exam. His body was found hanging from the terrace of his apartment.

Also, 16-year-old student doused himself with gasoline and set himself ablaze in the street in South Korea. He left a note indicating that he had performed badly in exams and felt bad to let his parents down.

Teen suicide is a universal problem, and occurs in different ways. Dozens of students killed themselves every year. One of the reasons is academic stress.

Teenagers go through a confusing period. It is common to have suicidal thoughts during this age. While some would manage to get over their disappointment over exam results and moved on, there are some who decided to end their life.

In this transition period, teenagers also face tremendous stress in adapting and adjusting, to establish their own personality and identity.

This group of young people face intolerable pressure from an education system that focuses heavily on academic grading. From an early age, they face immense pressure, be it from the parents or from their peers, to perform well in their examinations.

For instance, there are many Malaysian students who think their SPM results as the key to their career. There is then the pressure on them to do well in this public examination. Many are disappointed for not being able to fulfill their parents' expectations.

Teen suicide is, however, preventable.

In a research conducted by Flouri and Buchanan (2002), it is found that parental involvement plays a role in preventing suicide attempts.

Parents can help prevent suicide by recognising warning signs and most importantly, knowing how to communicate with their children.

Children are not examination machines. They need emotional support and understanding from their parents.

While academic grading is important, parents must realise that performing well academically does not promise a bright future. Success is not about scoring all As in the examinations, it is about having skills and good values. – April 14, 2014.
