Romania rising as New World of wine in ‘old’ Europe

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 08:03 PM PDT

FINTESTI (Romania), Oct 15 — On the gentle slopes of the Dealu Mare (Big Hill) region, winemakers are striving to make Romania the New World of wine in Europe.

"The conditions to make wine here are world-class," says Walter Friedl, the Austrian co-owner of the Lacerta winery.

"We are here at 45 degrees of latitude and we have conditions like in Bordeaux or Tuscany," he adds, speaking from his vaulted cellar, where wine matures in oak barrels made in France, Hungary and Russia as well as Romania.

Outside, pickers are harvesting grapes on the picturesque hills.

Friedl and his Romanian business partner Mihai Banita run an 82-hectare (200-acre) estate in Romania's southern Dealu Mare region, about an hour's drive from Bucharest.

The winery has a state-of-the-art processing unit that uses gravity to process grapes and a terrace overlooking the hills to welcome oenophile tourists.

Forty percent of the eight million euros (RM31 million) invested in the estate was provided by European funds for development granted to Romania as a new EU member.

With the exceptional sunshine of eastern Europe and Mediterranean air masses coming from the south, Dealu Mare is seen by specialists as one of the most favourable areas for wine.

Some influential oenologists, such as Bordeaux-based Michel Rolland, predict the Black Sea region — countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Armenia — will be the next big thing in the world of fine wines.

"We see a new world inside Europe. Romania, Bulgaria, they are... our Australia or our Chile," Friedl told AFP.

"In a way, you can say that Romania is the New World of the Old Wine World," says Bogdan Costachescu, oenologist for one of Romania's top quality winemakers, Davino, pointing to the growing success of the country's wines.

Romania grows international classics like Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon or Riesling, but also boasts unique local grape varieties.

"We are not only making the umpteenth quality Merlot," explains Banita, of the Lacerta winery. "We have our own Feteasca Neagra" — a red — "and its dried-prune aroma. (Also) Feteasca Alba or Tamaioasa," two white varieties.

"Some bottles are now selling for 60 euros and they deserve this price," says Cristian Preotu, the manager of Romania's Comtesse du Barry delicatessen stores.

Rediscovering an ancient tradition

But while Romania may look like a newcomer on the international wine map, the country is actually rediscovering a tradition dating back to antiquity and praised by the Latin poet Ovid.

That ancient winemaking tradition suffered a near-fatal blow during the Communist dictatorship that ruled the country from 1945 to 1989.

"The Communists collectivised the vineyards. They focused on quantity not on quality. Everything was poured into the same vat," Preotu explains.

After the fall of late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, winemakers and oenologists started to strive for a renaissance.

A French earl and winemaker, Guy Tyrel de Poix, was one of the first to embrace the Romanian "terroir" and opened his Terra Romana winery in 1994.

"That was a turning point. He brought up a lot of savoir-faire," Banita says.

"When I decided to start making wine in the late 1990s, Romania was producing mainly white, sweet wine, in huge quantities, and cheap," recalls Dan Balaban, one of the co-founders of the Davino winery, also in Dealu Mare.

"I decided to do the opposite: produce mainly red, in small quantities, and to sell it for a higher price," he adds.

With France's prestigious Bordeaux estates as role models, Balaban is running a 68-hectare vineyard in the bucolic village of Ceptura.

He kept the estate's 40-year-old vines to produce the Davino label, which is sold only in delicatessens, top-end restaurants or to private customers. Recently, a French client bought 20,000 euros' worth of Davino wine in one go.

Despite their growing success, the owners of Davino and Lacerta complain Romanian wines have had trouble escaping their negative image.

"There should be a national campaign to help promote the quality of our wines abroad," says Balaban.

So far Romania, the sixth-biggest wine producer in the EU, is exporting only three percent of its wine output, far behind countries like France or Italy.

But with or without a public relations campaign, Bogdan Costachescu, the oenologist at Davino, says the estate will continue making wine with passion.

"Wine is like art, the essence of life. At every tasting, I feel like a painter before a private viewing, hoping the wines we make will touch the ones who drink them," Costachescu says. — AFP/Relaxnews

Three Cubans defect before World Cup qualifier in Canada

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 08:44 AM PDT

BERLIN, Oct 14 — Three members of Cuba's national football team defected before a 2014 World Cup qualifying tournament in Canada this week, world football's governing body FIFA said today.

Three players had gone missing on Thursday in Toronto prior to their team's match against Canada a day later, which the hosts won 3-0.

"FIFA can confirm that three players defected already last Thursday, leaving the Cuban team with 11 players in the squad for the qualifier against Canada," FIFA said in a statement.

There is a history of Cuban athletes defecting to pursue a potentially lucrative professional career outside communist-run Cuba. Seven members of Cuba's Olympic football team defected in Florida in 2008 after a game against the United States.

In March, a Cuban football player left his team while they were in Tennessee for an Olympic qualifying tournament. — Reuters

Artist in profile: Patrick Wolf

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 07:04 AM PDT

Patrick Wolf's latest album, 'Sundark and Riverlight'. — All rights reserved

NEW YORK, Oct 14 — Eclectic English singer-songwriter Patrick Wolf, who has been described by Pitchfork as a "neo-Dickensian laptop minstrel" and a "pacifist werewolf bent on a nomadic musical existence," celebrates his tenth anniversary of album-making this year by releasing Sundark and Riverlight, an acoustic reworking some of his best-known and beloved songs from the past decade, out October 15.

Who?

English singer Patrick Wolf first leaped into public consciousness in 2003 with the release of his debut LP Lycanthropy, recorded over a period of eight years between 1994 and 2002. This debut effort was critically acclaimed, scoring 8.2/10.0 on Pitchfork and kickstarting Wolf's career. Since then the multi-instrumentalist, who over the past ten years has played everything from piano to ukulele, has won critical and popular acclaim for his diverse musical style.

Why the buzz?

Marking ten years since the completion of Lycanthropy, Wolf is releasing Sundark and Riverlight, a double album of re-workings of some of the artist's most memorable songs throughout the last decade. The double LP, Wolf's first purely acoustic effort, is described as "a double-disc outsiders' journey forever in search of somewhere to belong and someone to be" (Drowned In Sound), and "the most intimate record of Wolf's career" (Sputnik Music).  English newspaper The Guardian gave the album three out of five stars, and he earned 8/10 by music blog The Line Of Best Fit.

What to listen to?

Sundark and Riverlight drops on October 15 and can be purchased via www.patrickwolf.com and from iTunes, Amazon and record stores (Wolf recommends several local/independent stores on his website). For those who want to listen before buying, the album can be streamed on Soundcloud at soundcloud.com/patrick-wolf.

Where to see?

Wolf has European tour kicking off on Sunday, October 14, in Hamburg, Germany, and concluding on December 11 in Brighton, UK. Full dates and further information can be found via the artist's website at www.patrickwolf.com/livedates/.  — AFP-Relaxnews

Television host and actor Gary Collins dies at age 74

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 09:13 PM PDT

BILOXI, Oct 14 — Television host and actor Gary Collins died early yesterday in Biloxi, Mississippi, of natural causes at the age of 74, according to the local coroner's office.

Collins was admitted to the Biloxi Regional Medical Center less than 24 hours before he was pronounced dead at 12.56 am (12.56pm local time), according to Brian Switzer, deputy coroner at the Harrison County Coroner's Office.

He starred in the 1970s TV series "The Sixth Sense" and appeared in other series including "JAG," "Yes, Dear" and "The Young and the Restless," as well as on "The New Hollywood Squares" game show.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Mobley, a former Miss America from Brandon, Mississippi, and the couple spent some of their time in the state. Collins had been a host of the Miss America pageant.

In January 2011, he was accused of skipping out on a US$59.35 (RM181) restaurant tab in Biloxi, which in Mississippi is a felony. Those charges were later dropped but not before Collins was arrested in his Biloxi home after the restaurant's employees called the police.

In 2007, Collins was sentenced to four days in jail as the result of a car wreck in California. Police blamed that accident on the driver of the other car, though Collins pleaded no contest to a misdemeanour charge of driving under the influence.

In the 1980s, he hosted talk shows "Hour Magazine" and "The Home Show." — Reuters

British sunbed users can have their faces assessed for UV damage for free

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 11:57 PM PDT

LONDON, Oct 14 — In the wake of the latest study on the cancerous effects of tanning beds, Cancer Research UK is launching a new campaign called R UV Ugly?

The campaign will tour shopping malls around the UK, offering free ultraviolent skin scans so individuals can see the hidden damage on their skin.

In addition to free scans in shopping centers in Scotland (including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and East Kilbride) between October 15 and 28, British shoppers can stop by skin centres for free UV skin assessments in its 39 clinics across the country.

In addition, the R UV Ugly? campaign will hit the road later this year and early next year throughout shopping centers in the UK. For more info, visit the website.

According to the BBC, the rate of malignant melanoma for 15- to 34-year-olds is now at eight cases per 100,000 in the UK, which is higher than the UK average of six cases per 100,000.

Also, about 1,100 people of all ages are diagnosed with the disease every year in Scotland, according to Cancer Research UK.

Earlier this month , a massive new study was published in the British Medical Journal that linked indoor tanning bed usage with a rise in the risk of non-melanoma skin cancers, especially among those who tan before they turn 25.

Prior research has already linked tanning beds with deadly melanoma, but the new study extends the risk to other less serious forms of cancer — basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. — AFP-Relaxnews

Got a tough problem? Sleep on it

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 11:49 PM PDT

CALIFORNIA, Oct 14 — Turns out the old adage "sleep on it" may actually have some merit, at least according to a new study from the UK's Lancaster University.

Announced Friday, the study tested whether sleep or time spent awake was best in finding a solution to difficult problems.

Researchers found that sleep does help many people to solve their problems. — AFP pic

Researchers analysed data from 27 men and 34 women who were asked to attempt verbal insight problems of varying degrees of difficulty, followed by a period of sleep, time spent awake, or no time delay at all.

Then, subjects reattempted previously unsolved problems.

While researchers found no difference between the groups for the easier problems, the sleep group solved a greater number of difficult problems than did the others.

The results were published online in the journal Memory & Cognition.

"Sleep appears to help us solve problems by accessing information that is remote to the initial problem, that may not be initially brought to mind," says lead researcher Dr Padraic Monaghan.

"Sleep has been proposed to 'spread activation' to the solution that is initially distant from our first attempts at the problem."

The takeaway: if you're stuck, get some sleep, he adds.

Prior research from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has shown the positive benefits of sleep, or even short naps, when it comes to creative problem-solving. — AFP-Relaxnews

Amazon says Kindle users are entitled to e-books refunds

CHICAGO, Oct 14 — Owners of Amazon.com's Kindle e-readers will receive refunds on past e-book purchases and see e-book prices drop if a judge approves legal settlements with publishers accused of fixing prices, according to the Internet retailer.

Amazon told Kindle owners in emails yesterday that they could receive a refund of between 30 cents and US$1.32 (RM4.03) for e-books they bought between April 2010 and May 2012. The books must have been published by three publishers who have agreed to settle a lawsuit that accused them of inflating e-book prices.

The settlements are subject to court approval, and a hearing is scheduled for February.

If approved, the settlements would also limit the publishers' ability to set future e-book prices, which should lead to lower costs for Kindle users, according to Amazon.

"We think these settlements are a big win for customers and look forward to lowering prices on more Kindle books in the future," Amazon told customers in the emails.

Amazon did not immediately respond to questions yesterday about how many customers could be affected.

The settlements came about after the Justice Department in April accused Apple Inc and five publishers of illegally colluding on prices as part of an effort to fight Amazon's dominance of e-books.

Three of the publishers - News Corp's HarperCollins Publishers Inc, CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster Inc and Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group - decided to settle.

Amazon was not a party to this lawsuit.

The three publishers have denied they did anything wrong, but agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid the cost and risk of a trial, according to the settlement website, ebooksagsettlements.com.

If the court approves the settlements, the publishers will pay for e-book refunds that will be applied automatically to the Amazon.com accounts of eligible customers. Customers can use the refunds to purchase Kindle books or print books or request a check for the amount of the refund.

Electronic books more than doubled in popularity in 2011, with e-book sales making up 15 per cent of the market last year, up from 6 per cent in 2010, according the Association of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group.

While e-books increased in sales power, bringing in more than US$2 billion in 2011, the majority of publishers' revenue still came from printed books, at US$11.1 billion in 2011. — Reuters

Sleeping baby art

'Nezo Art no Hon' is reportedly inspiring Japanese women to create trendy baby art. — Afp pic

TOKYO, Oct 14 — Japanese mothers are creating a new kind of trendy art with their babies, reported the Japan Pulse blog of the Japan Times this week.

Japanese mothers are dressing their sleeping babies in colorful costumes and using everyday items such as clothes, hangers and vegetables as props to create Nezo art, which means "sleeping position art" in Japanese.

The trend started with cartoonist Mami Koide, who published a limited edition book in August titled Nezo Art no Hon, translated into The Book of Sleeping Posture Art, featuring 90 photographs of her sleeping daughter in various fantastical scenarios.

The book, which became an instant hit on Amazon Japan, also has tips for mothers who wish to make their own Nezo art.

The photographs were initially taken by Koide for the baby's father, who worked late nights as a bartender.

"At the beginning, I wasn't sure whether the illustration crafted with clothes would really look like a picture, but after I sent it to my husband, I was very pleased to hear that he really got it and that it was interesting. It made him chuckle," Koide told Japanese television network NTDTV earlier this year.

The art of photographing sleeping babies was prevously spotted in the popular blog of Finnish former copywriter Adele Enersen — in Mila's Daydreams, she creatively captured images of her sleeping daughter in various positions.

The photos were eventually put together into a book titled When My Baby Dreams, published in January this year. Afp-Relaxnews

Pemegang konsesi AES bakal untung RM700 juta setahun, kata DAP

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 01:59 AM PDT

Sokongan penduduk Ranau setinggi Gunung Kinabalu — Najib

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 11:51 PM PDT

ETP pula merangkumi Model Baru Ekonomi (MBE), 12 Bidang Ekonomi Utama Negara (NKEA), lapan Inisiatif Pembaharuan Strategik (SRI) dan 131 Projek Penggerak Ekonomi (EPP).

Pokoknya, berwaspada sebelum mempercayai seseorang!
