Real president under scrutiny after Mourinho exit

Posted: 21 May 2013 08:16 AM PDT

May 21, 2013

Real Madrid's Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho looks on after a match in Madrid. — AFP picMADRID, May 21 — Florentino Perez's record as Real Madrid president was under scrutiny today after the construction magnate's latest coaching project ended in disarray with the premature departure of Jose Mourinho.

Perez, who is up for reelection next month, announced yesterday Mourinho would be leaving at the end of the season, three years before his contract expires.

The world's richest club by income finished their latest campaign without a major title, surrendering their La Liga crown to arch rivals Barcelona, losing in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the third season in a row and falling 2-1 to Atletico Madrid in last week's King's Cup final.

Portuguese Mourinho was the eighth coach Perez has hired during two stints as president — from 2000 to 2005 and from 2009 to the present — during which time around 700 million euros (RM2.7 billion) of the club's money has been spent on players.

A move had been made for Paris St Germain's Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has told the French side he wants to leave, but PSG had so far blocked the deal and other candidates were being considered, a grim-faced Perez told reporters at a news conference at the Bernabeu stadium.

Perez lured Mourinho from Inter Milan in 2010 to deliver the 10th European title Real have been chasing since 2002 and end the domestic and continental dominance of arch rivals Barcelona.

However, after a three-year stint marked by division, controversy and conflict Mourinho's record is one La Liga title and one King's Cup, a meagre haul for a club as wealthy and ambitious as Real.

Perez's coaching appointments have also proved immensely costly to the club, according to reports in local media.

Real paid Villarreal 4 million euros in 2009 to release Manuel Pellegrini, who was sacked a year later, and 16 million euros to Inter Milan for Mourinho, the reports said.

Perez, 66, announced yesterday that the next election for the presidency would be held on June 16 and he would be standing for another term.

Real are one of four Spanish top-flight clubs owned by their members, or socios, alongside Barca, Athletic Bilbao and Pamplona-based Osasuna.

Despite Perez's apparent inability to appoint an effective coach, or at least give those he hires sufficient time to deliver, his position is unlikely to be challenged and without other candidates he will automatically be re-elected for another four years.

STATUTE CHANGES

In September, Perez won the backing of members for statute changes that make it harder for outsiders to seize control.

Presidential candidates have to have been club members for at least 20 years, up from 10 years previously, and must also personally provide a bank guarantee worth 15 per cent of the club's budget — around 75 million euros — rather than relying on any third party.

"Eliminating criticism does not mean being in the right," columnist Juanma Trueba wrote in As sports daily today.

"In the history of Real Madrid the club has only finished the season without a (major) trophy in soccer or basketball on seven occasions," he added.

"Four have been with Florentino in the presidency and it will be five of eight if the basketball team does not win the league this year."

How long Real's members are prepared to put up with that lack of success remains to be seen but if no other candidate is willing or able to oppose him he is unlikely to be forced out. — Reuters

Inter’s Moratti hints at change on Stramaccioni future

May 21, 2013

Inter Milan's cocah Andrea Stramaccioni reacts during their Italian Serie A soccer match against Lazio at the San Siro stadium in Milan May 8, 2013. — Reuters picMADRID, May 21 — Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti dropped a hint today that he might backtrack on his promise to keep Andrea Stramaccioni as coach, saying he was "reflecting" on what was best for the club.

"I don't like to say that it's the end of an era but we are having another look at the recent events," Moratti told reporters outside his office in Milan.

"Have I changed my mind over the coach? It's not that I've changed my mind but we are reflecting so that we can understand what is best for Inter.

"I haven't spoken to Stramaccioni or anyone else. This is the time for reflection and the reflection will be long."

Inter, the 2010 treble winners, suffered a wretched season, finishing ninth in Serie A after losing 16 of their 38 league games and failing to qualify for Europe for the first time since 1999.

Stramaccioni, who took over from Claudio Ranieri in March 2012, had previously been freed of blame by Moratti, as the coach was forced to cope with an ongoing injury crisis. But a 5-2 home defeat by Udinese in Inter's final game has made the 37-year-old's position precarious.

"On the one hand there is the talent of Stramaccioni, a guy who definitely will be successful in his job; on the other we have the current situation," Moratti said. "I'm thinking about what is the best choice."

Italian media are already linking Inter with Walter Mazzarri, who quit Napoli on Sunday after leading them to a second-place finish.

"Mazzarri? All coaches are good, but then they have to work at Inter, which is a different thing," Moratti said. — Reuters

Singer George Michael under observation for head injuries

Posted: 21 May 2013 08:22 AM PDT

May 21, 2013

George Michael performs on stage during his "Symphonica" tour concert in Vienna, September 4, 2012. — Reuters picLONDON, May 21 — British singer George Michael remains in hospital under observation for head injuries, five days after a car accident, his publicist said on Tuesday.

"I can confirm that George remains in hospital but purely as a standard precaution for observation because he suffered some bumps and cuts to his head. But he's making good progress, he's fine and he's really looking forward to getting home," the spokeswoman said.

British media have reported that the 49-year-old former Wham! front man fell out of a car he was travelling in on the M1 motorway just outside London during rush hour - the latest of a string of recent accidents and health scares.

The tabloid Sun newspaper interviewed a woman who said she had skidded to a halt after the singer fell out of the vehicle in front of her, and that she had used her car to shield him from other vehicles.

"There was a nasty cut on his forehead and the back of his head. There was blood all down his face and on his teeth," the Sun reported driver Katherine Fox as saying.

Last year, the "Careless Whisper" singer cancelled a tour of Australia due to "major anxiety" brought on by a 2011 battle with severe pneumonia in Vienna, where he was treated in intensive care for a month.

Michael has sold an estimated 100 million records over his career, but in the past few years has hit the headlines for his personal life more often than for his music.

In 1998 he was arrested in California for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public toilet. He has also had a number of run-ins with British police for possession of narcotics, and served time in jail for driving under the influence of cannabis. — Reuters

Please try to understand

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — "You takkan faham. You bukan saya!" — Parah

And isn't this true of all arguments, that they start because we don't understand them, because they don't understand us. You would never understand, because you're not me, you're not my kind.

We think we do, sometimes, that we understand each other, and that we can see and feel what the other is feeling. We live together for years, and we believe that we have reached that sacred place where we can finish off each other's sentences.

But then the fight comes, and you blurt out to me what we've truly known deep down in our hearts, "You're not me, you'll never understand."

— Melur, in Parah

It's easy to say, of course, that we should be more understanding, that we should always think for the other, that we should imagine what it's like to be wearing someone else's shoes. But who doesn't know, it's easier said than done.

We try, we do try so hard, and when we make little steps forward, we feel like we should take a short rest, a breather, and give ourselves a kind pat on the back for having made it this far. We've progressed despite the odds stacked against us, and we feel that it's progress enough.

So then why does it seem like we're drifting further away from where we intended to go? The more we aim to understand, the less we truly do. The more conscious our decisions to be at peace with the other, the less at peace we are with ourselves.

"Kita dah jauh merayau." — Melur, in Parah.

A scene from "Parah".Then it starts all over again, the disagreements and the fights and the whole hoo-hah over all sorts of little things. We pick on words, mere words, and promise we'll never let rest till the other submits.

"Tak boleh selalu aja nak mengalah. Kita dah terlalu banyak mengalah." — Hafiz, in Parah.

It's starting to feel like the never-ending story. We fight and we drift and still we don't give in. But maybe that's how it is, and how it should be. For really, how many of us even truly understand ourselves to start with?

The fights, the arguments — they're clues for us to find out about who we are, and how we see the world. We can choose to look without and put the blame on others without shame, or we can choose to look within and dig deep into the recesses of our hearts and ask those difficult questions.

Do I truly understand you? Do I even understand myself?

And maybe, just maybe, we will realise that we don't, and maybe it's not so important.

"Kita kawan, kan?" — Parah.

After all, PARAH read backwards is HARAP.

PARAH, written by Alfian Sa'at and directed by Jo Kukathas, is showing at Damansara Performing Arts Centre from May 16-26, 2013. For more details and tickets, visit www.kakiseni.com

Dove ‘Sketches’ most-watched online ad

Posted: 21 May 2013 07:45 AM PDT

May 21, 2013

NEW YORK, May 21 — Unilever claimed bragging rights yesterday to the most-watched Internet commercial of all time — a three-minute study of women's self-perception that stars a forensic artist.

The Anglo-Dutch consumer products giant said its "Dove Real Beauty Sketches" has been seen more than 114 million times on YouTube and other video platforms in more than 110 countries "to surpass all previously recorded video ads."

It is also the most-shared video in more than a year and the third most shared of all time, the company said in a statement, citing data from Unruly Media, which tracks the popularity of viral videos.

Released last month, "Sketches" features San Francisco forensic artist Gil Zamora as he draws a number of women, sitting behind a curtain out of his view, relying exclusively on how they describe themselves to him.

He then produces a second set of drawings — invariably more flattering — based on descriptions provided by strangers. The video goes on to capture the subjects' startled reactions upon seeing the resulting images.

"The 'Dove Real Beauty Sketches' campaign struck an emotional chord with millions of women who recognise that they are their own worst beauty critic," Unilever said.

Nowhere does the ad mention Dove as a product, apart for an appearance of its logo at the end.

Unilever launched a so-called Campaign for Real Beauty nine years ago in Britain to pitch Dove, a moisturizing soap, to "real women" in a world of Photoshopped celebrities and models.

Its other brands include Axe, a range of men's grooming products known as Lynx in Britain and Australia, which it markets via social and traditional media. — AFP/Relaxnews

The ABCDEs of spotting melanoma

Posted: 21 May 2013 07:35 AM PDT

May 21, 2013

As summer heats up, so do your risks for skin cancer, experts report. — AFP picSYDNEY, May 21 — As Melanoma Awareness Month, May marks a good time to keep a close eye on your skin for melanoma, all while slathering on the sunscreen.

The World Health Organization cites a rise in deadly melanoma throughout the Western world, especially in countries where skin is typically fair or where tanning is the norm, such as in Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and especially among white females.

But the good news is that in addition to seeing your health professional, you can keep an eye on your skin year-round with these ABCDEs for self-screening, from the American Academy of Dermatology.

Start with a mirror and a flashlight, or a loved one to help you. If you see any of the irregularities listed below in moles or spots on your skin, consult a dermatologist.

Asymmetry (one half unlike the other half)

Border (irregular, scalloped or poorly defined)

Color (varies from one area to another; shades of tan and brown, black; sometimes white, red or blue)

Diameter (the size of a pencil eraser or larger)

Evolving (changing in size, shape or color)

Additionally, a number of clinics conduct free screenings especially during the warmer months to promote skin cancer detection and prevention awareness.

In addition, protect yourself by avoiding sun exposure during midday hours, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Since UV radiation exposure is cumulative, protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with a high SPF every day, even on cloudy days, and avoid tanning, direct sun, and tanning salons.

You can also keep tabs on your skin with a free iPhone app called UMSkinCheck, which helps you to create a full-body "photographic baseline" of your skin, snap photos of suspicious moles or lesions, and monitor any changes in your skin over time. Another similar app is Skin of Mine for iOS, which lets you analyze and share photos of moles as well as get a consultation from a dermatologist. — AFP/Relaxnews

Wajarkah Anwar berundur?

Posted: 20 May 2013 05:13 PM PDT

UPDATED @ 08:47:25 AM 21-05-2013

May 21, 2013

Responden bersetuju dia berundur kira-kira 80 peratus. Ia tinggi tetapi belum sampai 15,000 orang.

MAY 21 — Once again, racism has reared its ugly head. The racist comments that came post-elections were not surprising.

In fact it was to be expected; race has always been used as a divisive tool in Malaysian politics and as such, phrases like "Chinese tsunami" should not be surprising.

However, what was shocking and, frankly, a little disturbing, is the display of racism veiled by the notion of Malaysian pride.

The dirty tactics used to secure votes, such as buying Bangladeshi, Nepalese and Myanmar workers to vote for the government — if true — is nothing short of despicable.

But the reaction of Malaysians on Polling Day was equally bad. It was disheartening to see how, in an effort to curb foreigners from voting, some Malaysians were overly suspicious and provocative towards people who "looked" foreign. There are stories about how foreigners were beaten, or verbally abused. There are stories of how fear and suspicion turned Malaysians against each other.

Have we lost our minds? Have Malaysians allowed fear to get the better of us? Have the dark realities from dystopian novels been realised in our society?

By lashing out and making statements that justify hurling abuse at foreign workers, we are no different from the racism we receive.

Firstly, it is a problem that foreign workers who have no idea what the political situation is in Malaysia were given the opportunity to vote during GE13. But before we tell them to balik to wherever they came from, understand that they are in our country because the prospects here are better than what they are at home. It is no fault of theirs that they are seeking opportunities to better their own lives.

But let us turn the table on you: say you were offered British citizenship on the condition that you must vote for the Labour party, would you do it? This is your chance for a better life. How many of us would claw at an opportunity like this?

As if we need any reminders that like them, we are pendatang too — many of our ancestors migrated here because of poor economic conditions in their home countries. Hence, it is inappropriate to tell them to balik.

Secondly, lashing out at foreign workers does not get at the root of the problem. Even if you think that they need to be taught a lesson for meddling with affairs that they do not understand, the fact remains that these are not the people who deserve your anger. The real bandits are the people issuing ICs and citizenships, not the people desperate for a better chance at life.

Why is this important? It is clear that we have been baited into this. In our hope and desperation for change, we have been detracted from the real arsenal that BN uses to stay in power, i.e. gerrymandering.

Race is such an easy card to pull because it affects us on an emotional level. Sure, to a certain extent, the way we react in a public sphere is driven by emotions (to this I say emotions are important). But when emotions start clouding rational thought, this becomes a problem. In the case of our reaction towards foreign workers, our reactions show that we stopped thinking rationally. We have allowed ourselves to be consumed by fear.

Despite our small victories this elections, this is one part that has left me deeply disturbed about our society. How are we expecting our government to rid itself of racism, when our immediate go-to reaction when we feel threatened is based on racism as well?

* This is the personal opinion of the columnist.

Putrajaya mahu Dong Zong buat pengubahsuaian jika mahu UEC diiktiraf

Posted: 21 May 2013 02:58 AM PDT

Oleh Md Izwan
May 21, 2013

Sepatutnya kita hapuskan sekolah jenis kebangsaan (SJK).
