The pair will take their championship title to the world finals next year, when they will compete for the title of world's best pastry chefs at the World Pastry Cup.

Placing second was the Danish team with their Batman and Joker-themed pastries, followed by Sweden, who chose spring as their inspiration. - AFP/Relaxnews, January 30, 2014.

Bayern leave it late to preserve unbeaten record

Thiago Alcantara's winner, which also marked his first goal for Bayern, was a superb volley in the third minute of time added on giving the champions their 16th win in 18 matches.

Bayern were 14 minutes from seeing their record run – dating back to October 2012 – come to an end before Claudio Pizarro's equaliser cancelled out Vedad Ibisevic's first-half goal.

This was a re-arranged fixture from December when Bayern were in Morocco winning the Club World Cup, but the Bavarians did not have things their own way for a change.

Bayern are on a host of league records – this was their 28th away match without defeat.

And with 50 points from 18 games, coach Pep Guardiola has made the best start of any coach in Bundesliga history.

But Bayern fell behind when 17-year-old left winger Timo Werner drove in a shot, which fell to the feet of Stuttgart's Mohammed Abdellaoue.

The Norway international, looked to have been offside and replays showed he was, but the flag stayed down and Ibisevic slotted home his pass on 29 minutes.

In response to falling behind, Bayern raised the tempo.

Only a fine save from Stuttgart goalkeeper Sven Ulreich five minutes before the break denied Alcantara, who unleashed a ferocious strike from well outside the area.

Guardiola trudged off for the half-time break with a face like thunder.

The game turned bad tempered after the break with referee Manuel Graefe dishing out three yellow cards in quick succession.

Both sides had clear chances with Bayern centre-back Jerome Boateng clearing off the line from Rani Khedira, brother of Real Madrid midfielder Sami, on 54 minutes.

At the other end, Thiago got in behind the defence, but Ulreich blocked the shot on 71 minutes for a corner.

Bayern poured on the pressure and Stuttgart's resolve began to show signs of cracking.

Veteran Pizarro came off the bench and Guardiola's choice paid dividends as he headed past Ulreich.

Werner squandered a great chance for the winner on 81 minutes when he fired straight at Manuel Neuer.

Tempers frayed as the final whistle loomed with Boateng and Stuttgart's Martin Harnik clashing after the latter clattered into Dante.

Both Boateng and Harnik picked up bookings, as the referee ended up showing a total of eight cards – five for Stuttgart, three for Bayern.

Alcantara capped a fine display when he volleyed home Rafinha's superb floated cross for a stunning goal to deny valiant Stuttgart even a point. - AFP, January 30, 2014.

Slick City sink Spurs to claim top spot

Manchester City's Yaya Toure scores a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur during their English Premier League match at White Hart Lane in London, yesterday. - Reuters pic, January 30, 2014.Manchester City's Yaya Toure scores a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur during their English Premier League match at White Hart Lane in London, yesterday. - Reuters pic, January 30, 2014.Manchester City fired a warning to their title rivals as they swept to the top of the Premier League with a ruthless 5-1 rout of 10-man Tottenham yesterday.

Manuel Pellegrini's side took advantage of Arsenal's draw at Southampton 24 hours earlier to knock the Gunners out of first place and open up a one-point lead in the race for the title.

City's victory was tinged with controversy after they were awarded a dubious penalty that produced their second goal and a red card for Tottenham left-back Danny Rose, but there was no questioning the visitors' supremacy at White Hart Lane.

Sergio Aguero had opened the scoring before Yaya Toure's penalty and further goals from Edin Dzeko, Stevan Jovetic and Vincent Kompany underlined City's superiority.

Etienne Capoue got one back for Spurs, but this was a major statement of intent from City, whose celebrations were slightly dampened by the injury that forced Argentina striker Aguero to limp off just before half-time.

City, who are now unbeaten in 20 matches in all competitions and have scored 21 goals in their last five games, routed Tottenham 6-0 at Eastlands on November 24 and this win was equally impressive in its own way.

Spurs had won five of their six league games since Tim Sherwood took charge, but they were made to look like raw rookies by a City performance that bore the hallmark of potential champions.

City had taken just 14 seconds to get on the scoresheet against Spurs in the Eastlands massacre and Aguero gave the hosts an early scare on a freezing night in north London when he lashed a shot against the far post from a tight angle.

Rather than tighten up at the back, Tottenham continued to let City dominate possession and they paid the price in the 15th minute.

David Silva was granted too much time on the ball in midfield and he weighed up his options before sliding a clever pass towards Aguero, who had timed his run perfectly to escape Dawson's attentions.

Aguero took full advantage as he clipped a sublime finish past Lloris into the far corner for his 26th goal of the season.

City were pouring forward in swaggering style and Aguero lashed a fierce volley just over after Rose cleared off the line from the Argentine's initial header.

After completely dominating the opening period, City survived a rare anxious moment when Michael Dawson volleyed home from Christen Eriksen's free-kick only to see his effort ruled out for a tight offside.

It was a tribute to City's class that even Aguero's departure, the Argentine forward limping off after pulling up abruptly just before half-time, couldn't disrupt their rhythm.

Given their first-half dominance, City would probably have won anyway, but they received a helping hand from the officials for their second goal in the 51st minute.

When Dzeko raced onto a through-ball into the penalty area, Rose launched himself into a last-ditch challenge and appeared to win the ball before making contact with the Bosnian.

However, referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty after acting on the advice of his assistant and then compounded Tottenham's misery by sending off Rose.

Ivory Coast midfielder Toure swept in the spot-kick to put City in total control and Dzeko rubbed salt into Tottenham's wounds two minutes later.

Lloris made an excellent save to push Silva's effort onto a post, but the rebound landed perfectly for Dzeko to steer his shot into the roof of the net.

Tottenham reduced the deficit in the 59th minute when substitute Capoue bundled home after City failed to deal with Eriksen's corner.

But Jovetic made it four in the 78th minute when his shot deflected in off Vlad Chiriches to give the Montenegro striker his first Premier League goal.

And City captain Kompany sealed the rout with a tap-in after Dzeko's shot deflected into his path in the 89th minute. - AFP, January 30, 2014.

Slovenia struggles to let go of treasured state companies

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 11:14 PM PST

January 29, 2014

The gloves came off as Joseph A. Mussomeli neared the end of his tenure as Washington's envoy to Slovenia, a posting that coincided with the country's narrow escape from submission to an international bailout.

An American firm was in the running to buy Slovenia's Fotona, a state-owned developer of medical and military laser gear with big sales in the United States. It was a rare example of this ex-communist country, now proud of its euro zone membership, selling a treasured corporate possession.

"Everything was agreed," Mussomeli told the Slovenian daily Finance in December, a month before he left the country.

"Then, despite assurances from senior government circles, PDP (the state fund with a majority stake in Fotona) suddenly came forward and demanded the price go up by one million euros ($1.4 million).

"It's not so much about the money," he said, "it's just another example that puts Slovenia in a bad light abroad."

More than two years after it was first put up for sale, Fotona is first in line this week for privatisation by a state used to controlling 50% of the economy.

The American company, Technology4Medicine, is still in the running, alongside private equity fund Alpe-Adria-Balkan Fund.

Slovenian media reports have disputed Mussomeli's characterisation of the state fund's tactics. Either way, the country long expected to be the economic success story of the ex-Yugoslav republics has a dismal record on privatisation.

Having scraped together funds to bail out its banks last month, Slovenia must now sell assets once considered sacrosanct by 2 million Slovenians who, unlike the rest of Eastern Europe, resisted Western capital after the end of the Cold War.

The risk is that big companies go at knock-down prices to buyers keenly aware that Slovenia needs the cash urgently.

Some in the disparate coalition government are openly hostile to selling off healthy household names, regardless of the banking troubles blamed on politically-motivated lending.

"Privatisation is key to breaking the vicious circle of state-owned enterprises, state-owned banks and interests of political elites," said Otila Dhand of Teneo Intelligence, a London-based think-tank.

Crony capitalism

Final bids for Fotona are due on Thursday.

More than a dozen other companies are on the block, including Telekom, the biggest telecom group, Ljubljana airport, flag carrier Adria Airways and No. 2 bank NKBM.

Two recessions since 2009 have exposed corruption and crony capitalism. As the global crisis ravaged Slovenia's exports, bad loans at state banks soared to around 25% of national output.

"The arrival of foreigners is becoming a reality which we long refused to face up to," said Lidija Jerkic, head of Slovenia's national union of metal workers. "Given the dearth of cash and the state of our economy... it's one of the last remaining options if we want to preserve it."

Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek told Reuters this week that the main state investment fund, SOD, "has informed us of a detailed timetable for the sale of 14 companies, which we have not made public yet."

Analysts, however, are doubtful. The Social Democrats, the second biggest party in the four-way ruling alliance, have openly opposed privatisation in the past.

"Our stand is that the strategy must determine which firms are of strategic interest, in which the state should keep a small controlling stake, and which should be sold off entirely," party leader Igor Luksic told Reuters last week in an emailed statement.

Former finance minister France Krizanic, a senior party ally of Luksic, was more direct: "We're not talking about a float on the stock exchange but a sale to likely direct competitors. With that, the national economy loses jobs and free cash flow."

After coalition talks on Monday, the Social Democrats appeared to support the sale of Telekom and Ljubljana airport, but said they had regrets. The agreement to sell "was not thought through," a party statement said.

"Rules of the game"

Such remarks will unnerve markets still uncertain whether Bratusek can hold the government together now that it has staved off the immediate threat of a bailout.

Telekom represents the biggest prize. The government is trying to attract interest from Deutsche Telekom and Telenor. It has hired Citi to organise the sale of a roughly 75% stake.

As for bank NKBM, recapitalised and now fully owned by the state, Slovenian media say Hungary's OTP and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) may be interested.

"We will look positively at investments in the banking sector as well as incorporates, but we need a clearer sense of the rules of the game," EBRD chief economist Eric Bergloff told Reuters.

Another milestone could be the sale of leading local retailer Mercator to Croatian rival Agrokor. Negotiations have dragged on since 2011. "It will be resolved one way or another by the end of this week," a source close to Agrokor told Reuters.

Then there are the unions, up in arms after layoffs followed the October sale of the first company on the privatisation list, paint and varnish producer Helios.

"Unions will never agree to the formula 'more privatisations, fewer workers'," Slovenia's Association of Independent Unions wrote in an open letter to Bratusek last month.

As the sale of Fotona neared, however, union leaders appeared more resigned. "The buyer will probably be a foreigner. We can only hope they preserve the company in its current form," said Fotona union representative Bruno Reja.

"We do expect drastic changes, however, as happened with other companies sold to foreigners, like layoffs or closing of whole departments," he said. "Foreigners only focus on profit. – Reuters, January 29, 2014.

Money and pride keep families apart at China’s New Year

Nanny and cleaner Tian earns 3,500 yuan (RM1,921) a month looking after the children of an expat couple in Beijing, and has not seen her own family in two years.

But if she goes home to Henan province, 800 kilometres to the south, she will be expected to hand out just as much – in red envelopes known as hongbao – to non-working members of her extended family, especially children.

"I have many nieces and nephews and I really can't afford the amount I will have to pay for each of their hongbaos," said the 46-year-old, slurping noodle soup in a heated high-rise apartment.

Instead Tian – who only wanted her surname used – will stay in the capital, where she can earn a bonus of her own.

"Staying in Beijing I can make four or maybe five thousand yuan, and during public holidays I can get double pay on top of that," she added, looking downwards with a smile at fellow migrant workers waiting for buses in the cold street below, their belongings loaded on their backs.

The Lunar New Year, known as the Spring Festival in China, is the only time that many of China's 245 million migrants will see their families all year.

The country's rush to the cities is the greatest human movement in history, but has thrown up a range of social consequences, particularly for children "left behind" in the care of often elderly relatives.

Even so financial pressures in an increasingly wealthy but unequal society are such that a growing number of migrants are choosing to spend the festival at their place of work.

Another nanny, who gave her surname as Lou, lamented the costs and trouble of the holidays ahead of a 1,600-kilometre coach journey back to the northwestern province of Gansu.

"It's not just the cost of the hongbaos, but I also have to travel to see all my family, which is a lot of time and cost as they are scattered across the countryside," said Lou, whose seat for the 21-hour journey cost her 217 yuan.

As Lou prepared for her gruelling trek from the booming capital to the dusty, arid backwater she calls home, some of China's poorest citizens were heading the other way in search of opportunity.

"We have had over 100 domestic workers turn up in the city just before the Spring Festival looking for work, which is far more than last year," said a woman surnamed Ge who works at a Beijing branch of national domestic cleaning agency Fuping.

"There is the demand, because not that many domestic workers stay in the city, and of course, the pay is better this time of year," she added.

About a third of China's migrants – who mainly work in the construction, manufacturing and domestic servant industries – do not return home for the New Year, according to a recent survey.

Almost a fifth of migrants who were staying at their workplace said it would be easier to find better work during the holiday period – while another 18% said they were afraid of being ridiculed by parents for not having a girlfriend or boyfriend.

The same proportion cited the costs involved, according to the survey of 13,200 migrants from job hunting website daguu.com.

But the biggest single reason for not returning, at 36%, was embarrassment at having earned too little.

With average urban incomes around 2,500 yuan a month, the prospect of making twice that much is enough to delay seeing their relatives.

"I may go and see the family in the summer when I will have more money... and it won't be so cold then," said Tian, huddling against the radiator. - AFP, January 29, 2014.

Award-winning Spacey to be honoured by NY museum

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 04:09 PM PST

January 29, 2014

Award-winning actor, director and producer Kevin Spacey (pic) will be honoured for his contributions to films, television and theatre by New York's Museum of the Moving Image at its annual salute in April.

Spacey, 54, who won the best actor Oscar in 2000 for "American Beauty" and a best supporting actor award four years earlier for "The Usual Suspects", will join the ranks of past honorees including Tom Cruise, Robert DeNiro and Julia Roberts, the museum said yesterday.

"We've always wanted to honour him since he delivered these tremendous screen performances for which he won Academy Awards," Carl Goodman, the executive director of the museum, said in an interview.

"Since then it has only become more clear that his strength as an actor and his willingness to take risks have led him to make great performances in any medium on any screen," he added in an interview.

Spacey currently stars as a charismatic and ruthless politician in Netflix's political drama series "House of Cards", which he also produces.

For his stage work, he picked up a best supporting actor Tony award in 1991 for the Broadway production of Neil Simon's play "Lost in Yonkers". Spacey has been the artistic director of the Old Vic Theater Company in London since 2003.

"The fact that we are the only museum devoted to the full sweep of media makes it more exciting for us to celebrate someone whose full work is not defined by a single medium," said Goodman.

The three-hour, private event will bring together Spacey's colleagues, friends and family for a tribute to his work. - Reuters, January 29, 2014.

Former mental health nurse wins Britain’s Costa prize

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 04:32 PM PST

January 29, 2014

Debut author Nathan Filer (pic) won Britain's Costa Book Award yesterday for his novel "The Shock of the Fall", which draws on his experience as a mental health nurse.

Filer, 32, said he felt "a bit emotional" as he accepted the £30,000 (RM165,797) prize at a London ceremony, adding it was "a real honour" to have been nominated.

Novelist Rose Tremain, chair of the judging panel, called it an "astonishingly sure-footed" attempt for a first novel.

"It is not just about schizophrenia – it is about grief," she said.

"This book stood out in a very good list. The voice in which the author has chosen to tell his story is perfectly aligned with the subject matter and very well sustained to the end.

"The book is exceptionally moving without being sentimental – we're very much hoping there will be more from this writer," added Tremain.

Filer explained of his novel: "I didn't set out to write about mental illness or schizophrenia, I set out to write about this character and his illness is one aspect of his character and there are many more than that".

The winner beat off competition from top-selling novelist and pre-award favourite Kate Atkinson, Lucy Hughes-Hallett, poet Michael Symmons Roberts and Chris Riddell, for his children's book "Goth Girl And The Ghost Of A Mouse".

Filer is a writer and lecturer in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University in south west England, and for many years worked for the city's mental health service.

The Costa Book Award, formerly the Whitbread Literary Awards, was established in 1971 to celebrate contemporary British and Irish writing. A panel of writers, actors and broadcasters choose the most enjoyable books from the past year.

It is the first time a debut novel has won the award since Stef Penney's "The Tenderness of Wolves" in 2006.

Hilary Mantel's "Bring Up The Bodies" won last year's prize. - AFP, January 29, 2014.

Ada apa dengan plastik

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 04:22 PM PST

January 29, 2014
