Is the Cragel the Cronut of 2014?

After the spectacular success of the Cronut last year, the latest Franken-pastry to take the media by storm is the Cragel, which is already being touted as the pastry of 2014 less than a month into the new year.

Created out of Brooklyn bakery shop The Bagel Store, the Cragel is half bagel, half croissant and has gone viral after being picked up by major media and broadcast outlets including USA Today, The Daily Mail in the UK, and The Late Show with David Letterman.

The brainchild of bakery owner Scot Rossillo, the Cragel is described as 'a delicate, flaky, buttery croissant' baked into a bagel and costs $2.95 (RM9.80) each.

But while the pastry has picked up steam, so far the Cragel doesn't seem to have inspired the same kind of pre-dawn lineups and black market mania seen by pastry chef Dominique Ansel's Cronut, the hybrid croissant-donut which took the world by storm spawning copycats from Europe to Asia.

It seems the foodspotting diviners at Andrew Freeman & Co. called it when they predicted that mash-up foods would become a major trend in 2014.

Also look out for crezels – croissant-pretzels – and piessants (pie croissants) to try and share some of the hybrid pastry spotlight. – AFP Relaxnews, January 23, 2014.

Levante's Nabil El Zhar slotted home a rebound after 30 minutes but with Barca carrying a greater attacking threat after the break they equalised through an own-goal by Juanfran.

Messi set up all three goals for Tello and Barca will take a comfortable lead back to the Nou Camp.

Messi reached another landmark in his illustrious career with his 400th match in a Barcelona shirt having made his official debut in October 2004 against Espanyol.

Earlier, Mikel Gonzalez scored twice and Carlos Vela grabbed the other in a 3-1 victory for Real Sociedad in their first leg against Racing Santander, whose goal came from Mahamadou Kone.

Seedorf’s Milan suffer shock Cup exit against Udinese

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 02:50 PM PST

January 23, 2014

AC Milan suffered a shock exit from the Coppa Italia when they lost 2-1 at home to Serie A strugglers Udinese in Clarence Seedorf's (pic) second match in charge yesterday.

An individual goal by 20-year-old Uruguayan Nicolas Lopez, only two minutes after coming on as a substitute, condemned Milan to the inevitable chorus of jeers from a sparse San Siro crowd after their quarter-final defeat.

Milan had given Seedorf a winning debut by beating Hellas Verona 1-0 in Serie A on Sunday and made a flying start to the tie when Mario Balotelli tapped in from close range after six minutes.

Milan failed to build on their early goal and Udinese levelled with a penalty converted by Colombian forward Luis Muriel four minutes before halftime following Urby Emanuelson's clumsy tackle on Silvan Widmer.

Udinese looked far more dangerous after halftime and were only prevented from going ahead by a dreadful double miss midway through the second half.

Substitute Maxi Pereira scuffed his shot in front of a gaping goal, then managed to scramble it back to Muriel who also miscued from a good scoring position.

Lopez showed them how it should be done when he collected the ball just inside the Milan half, surged forward and fired his shot into the corner.

Milan, 11th in Serie A, had no answer and trudged off after writing another chapter in a dismal season. - Reuters, January 23, 2014.

Homeless in Kuala Lumpur: Pekeliling Flats

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 02:48 AM PST

Built in 1967, it was one of the earliest housing development projects in the city, home to about 2,500 people for over 40 decades.

A visit today reveals an empty, desolate place. The air lingers with a sense of anger. Old furniture and fragments of personal belongings are the only hints of a past residence, left behind like the molting of a snake.

Old books, magazines, idols, clothes, tapes, photographs are just some of the items still lying on the floors of these units.

He gives me a guided tour around the block, examining each room and its abandoned contents. He slaps his hand on the walls as he assures me that the building is still very strong.

He asks me for the time. It was half past 4 in the evening. I asked him what time does he normally leave for home. He throws a hollow stare and quickens his pace with excitement as he gestures me to follow him.

He sleeps on a piece of cardboard on a cupboard turned over on its side. He takes a nap each afternoon from 5pm to 7pm, after which he heads to the nearby Buddhist temple for a meal.

At night, he burns pieces of wood from the old furniture to keep the mosquitoes away. Each day he scours the area for usable items. He has two pairs of clothes and the rest of his belongings are in a yellow plastic bag.

He offers me a cigarette.

I humbly decline.

There was a black umbrella that looked just fine to me although he thinks it's a bit too small for his liking. He demonstrates to me how he plans to change the head of the broom with a new one he found on the floor above. Seeing how it wouldn't fit, he casually tossed it through an opening in the wall.

He talks about his future plans for the place. A new door. A cover to keep the rain out.Lighting his cigarette, Ah Heng ponders of his then future plans to place a new door to the entrance of his 'home' at the Pekeliling Flats. - Pic courtesy of Present Tense Media, January 22, 2014.Lighting his cigarette, Ah Heng ponders of his then future plans to place a new door to the entrance of his 'home' at the Pekeliling Flats. - Pic courtesy of Present Tense Media, January 22, 2014.

He looks at my watch to catch the time. He takes a newspaper out from a plastic bag of his belongings and places it on a rattan settee in the adjacent room.

He lights a small piece of mosquito repellant at his bed side. It is time for his nap and the king ushers me out of his chambers. He gives me his blessings to explore the rest of the area. Who am I to resist?

Blocks of solid concrete loom over me as I left him behind. The roads are covered with shattered glass. In a matter of seconds I am covered with mosquitos, yielding at least eight blood suckers with each slap.

As I continued walking among the ruins of abandoned concrete, I thought hard about what it means to be called "homeless".

The taboo word immediately springs up images of filth, shame and degradation. So much so that society refuses to accept them as worthy human beings. Vermins. Creatures of the dark undeserving of even a second thought. Out of sight out of mind. They deserve it.

What are the benchmarks or standards that we use to define a civilised human being? A job, a house and a car?

We have become so obsessed with the accumulation and display of material wealth that we subconsciously accord respect to people in amounts correlated to their wealth. The wealthier a person is, the more we respect, fear and envy them. We kiss their hands and hope they remember your name.

Conditioned to perpetually feel insecure about our physical traits and social status, we desire for more and more each and every day. Work harder for that BMW. Work even harder to rent an apartment with a view of KLCC. Earn more money so you can spend it on overpriced coffee; because it's important for people to know that you can afford to spend on luxury, that you're living the life.

I will be absolutely honest in saying that I felt proud of Ah Heng. I congratulate him for what he has done for himself instead of wallowing in self pity and imposing a self- exile from society. There wasn't the slightest hint of sorrow or pity in his stride.

In today's social context, we are instinctively overwhelmed with feelings of pity and the need for empathy when we come across stories of people such as Ah Heng. But is it really justified? This urgency to impose standards on the lives of others?

Take a moment and think about what money, and having a home means to you.

The above was written in 2009, a year after I purchased my first proper camera (replacing my compact camera which produced purple images and my camera phone with a resolution of 128 x 64 pixels).

I was eager to photograph, document and write stories around KL, often finding myself in either abandoned or illegal spaces.

Since then, I visited the flats a number of times, hoping to find Ah Heng and this time, maybe offer him a cigarette instead.

In 2012, I found that the entire block had been demolished, with Ah Heng nowhere to be found. The mosquitos were still around though. I met a foreigner  scavenging for scrap metal and we exchanged greetings. According to him, Ah Heng had moved to another building.

I asked again: "Are you sure he's still alive?"

The foreigner replied: "He is, but he doesn't live here anymore."

In some ways, the short conversation felt as if I was talking about KL in a much larger context.

The people are still alive and yet they don't live in the city anymore. They couldn't afford it even if they wanted to.

The Pekeliling Flats (pic, below) is scheduled to be demolished today. – Present Tense Media, January 22, 2014.

Paying heed to the need for contraception

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 08:07 PM PST

January 22, 2014

Statistics show that more women in the lower income group do not use contraceptive. – File pic, January 22, 2014.Statistics show that more women in the lower income group do not use contraceptive. – File pic, January 22, 2014.Birth control, also known as contraception, refers to methods or devices used to prevent pregnancy or as a form of fertility control.

Birth control has long existed, surprisingly dating back to the days of the cavemen. However, the safer and more effective birth control methods only appeared in the 1960s but its usage and the public awareness on its importance is still low.

Dr Kamaljit Kaur Manocha, an Obstetrics and Gynecology consultant at the Bangsar Women Specialist Centre, estimated around 52% of local women were of the age of fertility but did not use any form of contraceptive.

Statistics show that the percentage was higher among those in the low-income group and those living in the rural areas.

She felt that the low rate of contraceptive use was linked to certain cultural beliefs that viewed birth control as morally unacceptable.

There is also the social stigma attached to women who use contraceptives, as they are viewed as being promiscuous or lacking in moral values.

Poor awareness

"Poor awareness has also resulted in women rejecting contraceptives over popular myths such as birth control pills will cause weight gain, infertility, acne and cancer," she explained.

She said society has to work together to dispel those myths.

"We actually need to look at the overall benefit of contraception on a woman's health," said Dr Kamaljit.

She felt that there has to be more public awareness campaign promoting the use of contraceptives.

Other functions of birth planning and control include distancing the gap between pregnancies, which indirectly helps improve the health of mothers and their children.

She said longer intervals between pregnancies also help reduce the risk of anaemia, or low count of red blood cells in mothers. The condition typically occurs during pregnancy.

Besides that, she opined, birth control also helped with the country's economic growth as more women were able to serve in the country's workforce.

"Furthermore, women with smaller-sized families will be able to reduce the cost of family healthcare," she added.

Many methods

There are generally three methods of contraception: natural family planning, reversible birth control and permanent methods of pregnancy prevention.

Preventing pregnancies naturally include regulating the timing of intercourse and coitus interruptus. However, both methods are not very reliable.

"Abstinence from sexual activity is better and important especially for unmarried couples. However, it is often regarded more of a moral decision or lifestyle choice," she said.

The reversible contraceptive methods are more effective and include barrier methods such as the usage of condoms, diaphragms and other contraceptive devices. Some methods alter hormones via pills, patches and vaginal rings, among others.

The most popular contraception method appears to be birth control pills and condoms, due to its ease of use, accessibility and low cost.

"Besides that, the usage of condoms is also a good way of preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases," said Dr Kamaljit.

Reversible contraceptive methods that are effective for the long term such as implants and vaginal ring are usually recommended to couples who wish to increase the gap between pregnancies.

Those who opt for methods such as vasectomy and tubal ligation must be doubly certain of their decision, as the procedures are not reversible.

Joint responsibility

Dr Kamaljit stressed that family planning was the joint responsibility of a couple and thus required the mutual agreement of each on the form of contraception to be used.

However, she did not deny that many men tend to wash their hands off the decision, refusing to learn or understand its effects on their partners.

"This is the mentality of Malaysian men that need to be changed. A change of mindset can help with the effort to improve the health of mother and child and subsequently result in happier families," she said.

She recommended men to accompany their partners to see the doctor and discuss contraception options.

Couples also have to discuss and reach mutual agreement on the number of children they wish to have.

Furthermore, she added, couples must look at the decision to have children in a more holistic manner and ensure they are ready physically, mentally and financially. – Bernama, January 22, 2014.

Beckham to team up with Del Boy and Rodney

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 04:27 PM PST

January 22, 2014

Former England soccer captain David Beckham (pic) is joining forces with two of Britain's most loveable comedy rogues to make a special appearance in a charity sketch of the sitcom "Only Fools and Horses".

It is the first time in 10 years that actors David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst will reunite as brothers Derek and Rodney Trotter, and Beckham jumped at the chance to be involved. The last "Only Fools and Horses" reunion was a 2003 Christmas special.

The charity Comic Relief said in a statement yesterday that the sketch would be broadcast as part of a star-studded television night on March 21.

"To be able to record a new 'Only Fools and Horses' sketch is in itself very special but for David Beckham, who is a huge fan of the show, to be part of this is truly brilliant," said Comic Relief Chief Executive Kevin Cahill.

"Only Fools and Horses", a British sitcom that ran in the 1980s, follows the fortunes of the brothers, known as "Del Boy" and "Rodders", in their dubious and often ill-fated attempts to get rich in Peckham, south London.

As well as "Only Fools and Horses", the night of television will also feature a special edition of "Strictly Come Dancing" with paralympians and hosts including Gary Lineker, Claudia Winkleman and Clare Balding.

Beckham, 38, last appeared in a sketch for Comedy Relief in 2012 when he cuddled up in bed with comedian James Corden. In 2010 he jumped into a bath with Corden.

But the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder, who also played for AC Milan, the Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris St Germain, has quashed speculation that he could take up a career in acting after retiring as a player last May.

"I'm not very good at acting, so maybe it wouldn't be a very good idea to go into that kind of industry," he said last month. - Reuters, January 22, 2014.

Empat negara maju akui keberkesanan model DEB

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

January 22, 2014

- Bernama, 22 Januari, 2014.

Polis kesan individu sebar gambar kematian kanak-kanak di laman sosial

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 02:55 AM PST

January 22, 2014

- Bernama, 22 Januari, 2014.

Super League lives up to name in opening round

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 02:45 PM PST

January 22, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

Making your debut at anything or making a first appearance is always exciting, and I thoroughly enjoyed my debut on Astro Arena's coverage of Malaysian football. Being a studio guest on the Piala Sumbangsih curtain raiser last Friday made for an interesting evening.

The Malaysia Cup Champions Pahang looked good in patches against a Lions XII side who clearly missed the leadership and playmaking skills of Shahril Ishak. Although my former teammate Fandi Ahmad played an attacking game, he clearly has his work cut out for him without previous coach Sundram Moorthy's talisman.

Once again, the Lions XII will have to rely on home form to put in a challenge but from this first impression, they would seem to already have relinquished their Super League title when we study the improvement within rival squads in the title race.

As for Pahang, Mathias Conti needs four chances to score and new signing Dickson Nwkaeme will be out for a while with a hamstring injury. They will need Azidan to start running games or it could be back to front as both Zesh Rehman and Damion Stewart are rather conventional defenders of the old "lump it and fight for it" age.

On to Saturday and my home state team Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) overcame a young and energetic Perak. The young Perak team reminded me of Aston Villa, all youth and enthusiasm but lacking a leader to bring calm, intelligence and experience to the team.

There was anticipation and excitement every time Pablo Aimar touched the ball. Luciano Figueroa was a willing runner upfront while striker turned right-winger Amri Yahyah provided everything dangerous in attack including a super, near-post header from a corner to settle the expectations.

The touch of class was provided by Safiq Rahim when he slipped a sublime pass through for Figueroa to score a debut goal.

It will not always be pretty or easy, but expect JDT to set the pace with the sheer individual talent within the squad come end of the season.

The partnership of Shukor Jusoh and K Gurusamy was totally in control and dominant for Selangor as they made light work of T-Team. The duo, in central midfield, were most impressive while also providing the platform for Brazilian midfielder Junior to pull the strings.

An injury to Shukor meant Junior dropping deep to partner Gurusamy and only then did T-Team show some ambition.

The twinkling feet of S Kunanlan deserved two penalties and he has every reason to feel aggrieved. Refereeing does seem a convenient excuse for many teams when results don't end favourably, but judging from the hefty and reckless challenges Kunanlan received, one cannot help but question the decision-making from the man in black.

No surprises in the English Premier League

On the subject of twinkling feet, the Arsenal were leaden footed in the first half against Fulham but true class eventually shines through as Santi Cazorla proved. Serge Gnabry danced around Fulham defenders, though his finishing let him down; at the tender age of 18, he can only improve in that aspect. When that day arrives, I fear for fullbacks all across Europe.

At the Etihad meanwhile, the twinkle toes of Craig Noone exposed Vincent Kompany so badly he needed two taxis home. However, there is no stopping City and with David Silva in impish form, I can't wait for February and the UCL round of 16 encounter with Barcelona.

As the British media goes off on another witch hunt, the Liverpool fans will always bless the day Luis Suarez came to Anfield. While Brendan Rodgers tries his best to weaken his own midfield, the imperious form of Suarez continues both with and without the ball.

There is just no logic to Rodgers trying to fix what is not broken! But he has broken it and it won't be the same unless he puts Liverpool the team before the individual.

Matches against Manchester City and Chelsea showed that this Liverpool side can hang with the big boys once again (indeed, and Liverpool may very well have taken 6 points from these contests were it not for dubious decisions by the men in black), but limping to a draw against an Aston Villa side which, solid and disciplined as they might be, are hardly world-beaters themselves, one needs only to take a gander at the starting 11 Rodgers has set out each time.

It is strange watching the Spurs now because they seem more confident than it shows on the idiot box. They controlled the tempo at Swansea but seemed to drop the tempo when in possession. Quite unconventional but it was good to see Tim Sherwood get three points as he goes about advocating controlled, possession football.

At Stamford Bridge, it was the usual boring three points from the Boring One. What Manchester United offered was no different from a Hull City or Crystal Palace and so Chelsea offered the usual stop-start, stop-start football that has become the Jose Mourinho template. Results keep coming, so there is obviously no reason to change what isn't broken!

There was more flow in the United performance but the creaky defence, as has been the problem all season, creaked so badly that even Samuel Eto'o got a hat trick. He was made to look almost as good as he was during his last stint for a European powerhouse!

The biggest question mark is Phil Jones. A jack of all trades at one point, he has now become a jack of no trade!

Completely awful at everything he does, maybe, just maybe it is time to send him out on loan as the eighteen million pounds spent on him is indeed money wasted. His headless running creates holes in central midfield and allows opponents to dominate that area.

But then again, he is the stereotypic English midfielder, runs all day, tackles everything but has no positional awareness or the eye for a pass.

And he was thought to be better than Paul Pogba. – January 22, 2014.
