Bolivia eyes Asia, Mideast as quinoa market booms

LA PAZ, Dec 9 – Bolivia has its eye on untapped Asian and Middle Eastern markets, hoping to cash in on what the United Nations is calling the International Year of Quinoa, another honour for the Andean "superfood".

Bolivia is the world's top producer of the super-nutritious "grain" which technically is not a grain but the seeds of the goosefoot plant.

Quinoa, which prospers in semi-arid conditions and high altitudes, is seen as a kind of nutritional superstar. It can be prepared and served like rice but is chock full of protein and essential amino acids.

Originally scorned by Bolivia's Spanish colonisers, at one point quinoa's cultivation was banned due to its use in what Spaniards saw as "pagan" ceremonies. The indigenous Incas were forced to grow wheat instead.

Known as chisaya mama or "mother of all grains," it was so revered by the Incas that the emperor would traditionally sow the first seeds of the season with special tools made out of gold.

But in the past 10-15 years, quinoa (seeds of Chenopodium quinoa) has made major inroads in Western cuisine and is often used as a substitute in pastas, risottos, gratins and taboules.

Always on the lookout for healthier options and new tastes, chefs and nutritionists have been wowed by the kitchen versatility of the ancient "grain," which has a light, fluffy texture and a mild, slightly nutty flavor.

Experts say it has more protein and fiber than rice, corn, wheat or barley — and fewer carbohydrates than all of them.

Bolivia leads global output – 70 per cent of which is exported—followed by Peru and Ecuador. Most of Bolivia's quinoa exports are to the United States and Europe.

"The potential markets now are in Asian countries: China, Japan, Korea... Countries in the Middle East also are interested," said Ivan Cahuaya, who works with state export promoter Promueve Bolivia.

"We have been selling a lot in mature markets like the United States and Europe, but now the decision is to go find new markets," said Cahuaya, noting that other countries are boosting their output and some, including Chile, Colombia and the United States, have even sought patents.

With domestic prices having surged and then stabilised, Bolivia is hoping to keep its exports booming.

"We are hoping the International Year of Quinoa, which is next year, will find us in new markets," smiled Jaime Belen, of the National Quinoa Growers' Association.

Quinoa in its natural state has a coating of bitter-tasting saponins, making it unpalatable prior to processing.

Most quinoa sold commercially in North America has been processed to remove this coating, which helps to naturally protect the plant from birds and other predators during the growing process. – AFP-Relaxnews

Is this the world’s most expensive Christmas dinner at £125,000?

LONDON, Dec 8 — A rare breed turkey wrapped in 50-carat gold leaf, a bottle of champagne that predates World War I and the world's most expensive fish eggs are part of a meal that's being described as the most expensive Christmas dinner in the world.

For £125,000 (RM612,500), London chef Ben Spalding, currently head chef at John Salt, will prepare a Christmas dinner for four made up of some of the rarest and most expensive ingredients in the world.

For instance, before tucking into their gilded meal, diners will clink to the holidays with an aperitif of Piper-Heidsieck Champagne circa 1907 – valued at £37,000 – in diamond-studded flutes.

The four-course meal opens with bird's nest and Almas caviar, prepared with a 150-year-old balsamic vinegar, and Pata Negra Ibérico jamón.

Following that, diners will sample the world's most expensive melon from China, the Yubari King, served with whole white truffle and saffron.

But the showpiece of the meal is the Dodine of rare breed turkey with Wagyu beef fillet and heart, wrapped in no less than 50-carat gold leaf and sprinkled with Akbari Pistachios – which alone cost £5,000.

The world's most expensive coffee bean, the Kopi Luwak – coffee berries extracted from the feces of the Asian civet cat – make up the dessert course which is served with Densuke watermelon, a seedless fruit grown on the island of Hokkaido, Japan which produces only 10,000 melons a year, all of which is served off a gold, Ugandan vanilla plate.

Meanwhile, Spalding will be donating 80 per cent of his fee to the Cancer Research UK and Hospitality Action. The event is organised by VeryRirstTo.com, a service which offers exclusive, luxury products and experiences to its members.

If £125,000 is a little outside your price range, The Fat Duck – where Spalding completed a residency – is offering a £300 holiday meal that includes edible snow, snail porridge, dishes that will riff on frankincense and myrrh, and nitro-scrambled egg and bacon ice cream.

A 10-course Christmas Eve dinner at Le Cinq restaurant inside the Four Seasons in Paris, meanwhile, is priced at €600, and includes the usual suspects one would expect from a gourmet French meal: foie gras, caviar and 'French-hunted' venison. — AFP-Relaxnews

Singapore hold Philippines in AFF Suzuki Cup semi

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 07:58 AM PST

MANILA, Dec 8 — Goalkeeper Eduard Sacapano's performance glossed over Philippines' defensive frailties in a goalless draw against Singapore in the first leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-final on Saturday.

The partisan crowd at Manila's Rizal Memorial Stadium watched anxiously as Sacapano pulled off a number of first-half saves to thwart three-time champions Singapore.

Playing their first home match in the tournament's history, Philippines dished out a vastly improved performance in an eventful second half even though they could not break the stalemate.

Singapore host Philippines in the second leg at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday.

Saturday's match began with both teams observing one minute silence in memory of the victims of the Dec. 6 typhoon that left nearly 1,000 people dead or missing in southern Philippines.

Singapore were making dangerous inroads as soon as play started and the visitors nearly scored before the half hour mark when Sharik Ishak's header from a Aleksander Duric cross narrowly missed.

Sacapano was soon intercepting a dangerous Ishak cross and the home team's defence threatened to succumb under constant pressure.

Philippines did get a chance to grab the lead but Phil Younghusband's weak shot was easily dealt with by Singapore goalkeeper Mohamad Izwan Mahbud.

Marwin Angeles and Chieffy Caligdong came off the bench to add teeth to the Filipino attack in the second half but Singapore's compact defence ensured the visitors were unscathed.

"In general, it was a good game. They did not score, we did not score," Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic said.

"I think we lost concentration in the first half. We should have scored a goal in that period," said the Serb.

Singapore could also have scored in a rough second half but Duric's header off an Ishak cross sailed wide.

"The second half was much better but still not to the potential that we can play," Philippines' coach Michael Weiss said. — Reuters

Mourinho hints at move away from Real Madrid and Spain

LISBON, Dec 8  — Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has hinted at a move to another country, saying that sometimes a new adventure at a new club is the only way for a coach to remain motivated.

"Football is not an easy world, specially for coaches and it's hard for one to stay for many years in the same club," he said in an interview with Cape Verde's national radio.

"I am wholly Portuguese and I have a bit of the navigator, of the discoverer in me. I like different countries, different clubs, different leagues and different cultures.

"I am still not sure if in my future there is another adventure waiting for me because I need to be 100 percent motivated and sometimes new challenges can give us this motivation".

Media speculation surrounding Mourinho's future at Real Madrid has been rife. In May he signed a two-year contract with the club which ties him until 2016 but, after winning the La Liga title last season, his side has struggled to keep momentum in the championship.

The Madrid-based sports daily Marca has said Mourinho was planning to leave the club at the end of the season.

Mourinho has been linked to big-spending Paris St Germain and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has mentioned him as a possible successor at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese said his future remained unclear but added that, unlike his former rival at Barcelona Pep Guardiola, he would not be taking time off between jobs.

"I still don't know about my future but I will surely continue to work because I love doing so and I prefer to work than be on holiday," he said. — Reuters

S.Africa’s Mandela admitted to hospital for tests

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 07:39 AM PST

JOHANNESBURG, Dec 8 — Former South African president Nelson Mandela was admitted to hospital today for medical tests, although the government said there was no cause for alarm.

A statement from President Jacob Zuma's office gave no details of the condition of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader.

"Former President Mandela will receive medical attention from time to time which is consistent with his age," the statement said.

"President Zuma assures all that Madiba is doing well and there is no cause for alarm," it added, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president after the country's first all-race elections in 1994, was admitted to hospital in February because of abdominal pain but released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing seriously wrong with him.

He has since spent most of his time in his ancestral home in Qunu, a village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province.

His frail health prevents him from making any public appearances in South Africa, although in the last few months he has continued to receive high-profile visitors, including former US President Bill Clinton. — Reuters

Tortoiseshell craftsmen adapt to new century

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 02:27 AM PST

PARIS, Dec 8 — What did Yves Saint Laurent, Jackie Kennedy and the architect Le Corbusier have in common? Their eyewear, for one, as clients of the luxury French tortoiseshell artisan, Bonnet.

Four decades after the trade in tortoiseshell was banned under the 1973 CITES convention, the fourth-generation family firm sees itself as custodian of a rare craft, fashioning made-to-measure spectacles from stocks amassed before the ban.

Bonnet describes its customers — among them Audrey Hepburn, Maria Callas or presidents Francois Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac -- as "aesthetes" more concerned about style, the timeless kind, than fashion.

Christian Bonnet, who learned the trade from his father and grandfather, holds the rank of "maitre d'art", an honorific title granted by France's culture ministry and currently held by just over 100 craftsmen nationwide.

Today jointly headed by Christian and his sons Franck and Steven, Bonnet turns out around 100 pairs of hand made tortoiseshell glasses per year for prices ranging from 3,500 to 30,000 euros.

"My father didn't want me to go into the trade, because of the problem with tortoiseshell supply," produced mainly from the shell of the endangered hawksbill turtle, Franck Bonnet told AFP.

With 12 grammes of tortoiseshell needed for one pair of glasses, the firm says it uses around two to three kilos of the stuff per year.

Declared part of French national heritage in 2007, Bonnet will not say how much stock it holds, but the supply is finite.

"It is inconceivable that we would ever fish another turtle out of the ocean," says the 41-year-old, himself a staunch environmentalist.

So he decided a few years ago it was time to look to the future —and to a wider market.

"For my father, my grandfather and great-grandfather before them, it was tortoiseshell, tortoiseshell, tortoiseshell only.

"I said to my father, 'You are the last tortoiseshell craftsman, but you are also the last hand-made eyewear maker. If we could only use more readily available materials, maybe I can keep our craft alive?'"

That is how from 2008 onwards, he introduced buffalo horn — lowering the average frame price to between 1,200 (RM4,739) and 1,500 euros, and acetate, for budgets between 850 and 1,150 euros.

Tortoiseshell aside, the dozen workers at its Paris boutique and workshop in Sens, a few hours southeast of the capital, now produce some 700 pairs using new materials.

The next step towards broadening what they offer is to come from customisation -- allowing people to change the size and colour on standard models.

Franck Bonnet says he loves watching Japanese tourists inspect his wares, and is mulling opening a boutique in Tokyo.

"They go over every last detail. You know you haven't put the effort in for nothing!"

Bonnet was snared in controversy recently when a star journalist, Audrey Pulvar — then in a relationship with a Socialist minister -- was outed for wearing a pair of their steeply-priced glasses.

"It wasn't 12,000 euros, it wasn't 15,000 euros or 18,000!", as reported in the media, Bonnet told AFP. "Five thousand is more like it."

In other words, almost an entry-level model.

"It's true it is costly," Bonnet said. "But we artisans are not millionaires, this kind of high craft is extremely time-consuming."

Making glasses to measure means studying the face in minute detail.

"How high your ears are, the shape of your nose -- all have an incidence on the tilt of the lenses, and therefore on how well you see," he explained. And that is before all the different steps of shaping and polishing the frame.

"You can spend a crazy length of time on a pair of spectacles, redoing them two, three, five times to get them exactly right. What costs money is not marketing, it's what goes on the client's nose!" — AFP-Relaxnews

Fitter kids do better in school, says study

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 01:41 AM PST

NEW YORK, Dec 8 — Being physically fit won't only help your children stay healthier and more active — a new US study finds it could help them turn out better grades in school.

Researchers from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, looked at academic performance and how it relates to physical fitness, including body fat, muscular strength, flexibility, and endurance.

"We looked at the full range of what's called health-related fitness," says lead researcher Dawn Coe. "Kids aren't really fit if they're doing well in just one of those categories.

Coe and her team gathered data from 312 students in sixth through eighth grades, around 11 to 14 years old. They measured their fitness levels via a program of pushups, shuttle runs, and other drills and then compared them to their academic performance. Findings revealed that the fittest kids got the highest test scores and grades, regardless of gender or onset of puberty.

"Fit kids are more likely to be fit adults," adds co-author James Pivarnik. "And now we see that fitness is tied to academic achievement." He adds: "So hopefully the fitness and the success will both continue together."

Results were published December 6 in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness.

A prior US study from 2009 also found a link between fitness and academics: fit kids scored better on standardized math and English tests than their less fit peers. That study appeared in the Journal of School Health.

Springsteen, Alabama Shakes top Rolling Stone’s 2012 best music

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 11:39 PM PST

LOS ANGELES, Dec 8 — Veteran rocker Bruce Springsteen and newcomer blues-rock band Alabama Shakes yesterday landed the top awards in Rolling Stone magazine's annual list of the year's best music, which featured many of next year's leading Grammy nominees.

Springsteen's 17th studio album "Wrecking Ball" topped the magazine's list of best albums, with the magazine calling it "rock's most pointed response to the Great Recession".

Springsteen, 63, came in ahead of hip hop artist Frank Ocean's debut "Channel Orange" at No. 2 and former White Stripes frontman Jack White's debut solo effort, "Blunderbuss", at No. 3, in the annual list selected and compiled by Rolling Stone editors.

Springsteen, Ocean and White all landed Grammy nods, which were announced earlier this week.

The rest of the top 10 albums included Bob Dylan's "Tempest", Green Day's "¡Uno!", Neil Young and Crazy Horse's "Psychedelic Pill", Kendrick Lamar's "good kid, m.A.A.d city" and Fiona Apple's "The Idler Wheel is Wiser..."

"Hold On" by newcomer blues-rockers Alabama Shakes was named the top song of the year, beating off popular tracks by Ocean, White, Springsteen, Dylan and Kanye West in the top 10.

While both the albums and songs lists were dominated by rock and rap artists both old and new, country-pop star Taylor Swift was a surprising entry at No. 2 on the best songs list with her infectious chart-topping hit song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together".

Rolling Stone described the song, which landed a Grammy nod for record of the year, "a perfect three-minute teen tantrum about country girls getting mad at high-strung indie boys".

Pop-rockers Passion Pit's "Take a Walk", Ocean's "Thinkin Bout You" and Young and Crazy Horse's "Ramada Inn" rounded out the top five songs.

Aktivis bidas dakwaan MCA kaum Cina menerima loji Lynas

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 02:46 AM PST

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 01:07 AM PST

Insya'Allah, kamu faham maksud saya?"  kata beliau lagi.

Selain beliau, seorang lagi delegasi wanita Kelantan, Rita Sarbanon turut menyentuh mengenai isu calon apabilan mencadangkan  agar presiden Umno, Najib memperuntukkan kuota calon 30 peratus kepada golongan wanita untuk bertanding dalam pilihan raya  nanti.

Midfield concerns for United

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 03:14 PM PST

DEC 8 — It's been a bit of a strange season so far in the English Premier League — strange in that none of the teams have looked particularly good.

Manchester United are leading the table by three points despite losing three games, rarely playing particularly well and seemingly having signed a secret contract to concede the first goal every time they step onto the pitch.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils have managed to score goals with even more regularity than they've conceded them, and Sir Alex Ferguson's team are deserved league leaders at this stage despite all their obvious faults.

Reigning champions Manchester City are nowhere near as impressive as they were last season, with Roberto Mancini's tinkering and the loss of form of several players combining to create a disjointed and defence-first side that has somehow managed to stay unbeaten thanks to a plethora of late goals.

Then there's the curious case of Chelsea, who started the season like a house on fire. Although most people suspected that was never going to last, we could never have foreseen that their "dip" in form would prove to be such a sudden and spectacular implosion to leave us with the tragicomic mess of Rafa Benitez's surely ill-fated reign.

Arsenal are just the same old Arsenal that we've become accustomed to in the last few years: fast, flowing and free-scoring on some occasions; limp, lifeless and lost on others.

Considering the gradual but significant decline that Arsene Wenger has overseen for the last seven or eight years, it's time to stop regarding the Gunners as serious title contenders — they are now nothing more than inconsistent also-rans for whom a place in the top four is a major success.

Meanwhile, their North London neighbours Tottenham are still evolving under the unusual management style of Andre Villas-Boas, and Spurs fit quite nicely into the overriding theme of the current EPL season by veering erratically from terrible to wonderful on an almost weekly basis.

All this inconsistency has allowed some unlikely candidates to challenge for the all-important top four: the rugged solidity of Everton; the pace and power of West Brom; the silky passing of Swansea... all of them (plus Stoke and West Ham) have outperformed Arsenal in the battle for Champions League places so far.

Amidst all that uncertainty, it's impossible to predict with any confidence what might happen when the biggest game of the season takes place tomorrow: Manchester City against Manchester United.

How will the game unfold? No idea; beats me. City's strong home form suggests that they should prevail but they've hardly been in scintillating form at the Etihad Stadium, requiring penalties to come from behind and claim a draw in their last two home games (against Real Madrid and Everton).

It's nearly two years since City lost a Premier League game at home, but their faltering form in recent weeks suggests that United have every chance of breaking that sequence if they perform well.

But will United do that? Even Ferguson can't know the answer to that question considering the inconsistencies that have plagued his team so far this season.

Last weekend's bizarre game at Reading was a mini-encapsulation of United's good and bad. Defensively, they started the game in dreadful fashion, allowing a far-from-prolific Reading side to score three goals in the opening half of the first half, with two of them coming from right-wing corners.

Going forward, however, United were at their dangerous and incisive best, scoring four in little more than half an hour to cancel out their defensive frailties and take a 4-3 lead that stayed intact throughout a relatively incident-free second period.

The key to tomorrow's game could be whether United's midfield is able to compete with City's powerful central players — especially Yaya Toure, who was a dominant force when his side defeated United 1-0 at the Etihad towards the end of last season.

Most United fans regard the midfield area as their team's biggest weakness, especially their lack of dynamism and energy due to the ageing legs of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. And although Michael Carrick has performed very well in a deep-lying distributive role, he is another player whose mobility is far from his greatest strength.

To provide greater energy levels in the middle of the pitch, Ferguson could be pinning his hopes on fellow Scot Darren Fletcher, who is making a good recovery from the unpleasant ulcer problems that kept him on the sidelines for nearly a year until his recent comeback.

Injuries to inconsistent Brazilian Anderson and rising star Tom Cleverley, along with the ongoing absence of summer recruit Shinji Kagawa, have hardly helped United's cause in this area. Wingers Antonio Valencia and Nani are also missing, so United are significantly below full strength as they approach their derby date.

Considering those injury problems, it seems unlikely that United will be able to contain Toure's menacing forward bursts, so perhaps they'll have to once again rely on the approach of simply trying to score one more goal than their opponent. It could be another high-scoring thriller — let's hope so.

Barfi’s new Bollywood magic

Posted: 07 Dec 2012 03:07 PM PST

DEC 8 — I think it was only a few weeks ago that I wrote about fresh new voices finally getting recognition from the Indian cinema mainstream, particularly highlighting the outstanding two-part film "Gangs Of Wasseypur", directed by Anurag Kashyap, one of India's leading advocates of indie filmmaking.

Along the way I mentioned other highlights of recent years like "Delhi Belly", "Peepli Live", "Ishqiya", "Paan Singh Tomar" and "Rowdy Rathore", but nothing prepared me for the magic I experienced with the film "Barfi", which I didn't manage to catch in the cinemas but was very recently released on DVD.

What I've been expecting for a few years now, ever since I got excited by Hindi films again with "3 Idiots", is now official. This is the year I fell in love with Bollywood all over again. And by falling in love, I mean the way I was crazily head over heels with Hindi films that any Malaysian kid born in the 1970s like me would've loved, like "Haathi Mere Saathi" and all those Amitabh Bachchan classics.

My parents' generation had "Sangam" and "Bobby", and the generation after mine had "Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham" (although I prefer the films by Sanjay Leela Banshali during this era, especially "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam"). With the influence of Hollywood and American indie films steadily taking hold of Bollywood in recent years, recent Bollywood megahits like "Endhiran" and "Don 2" have often lacked some of the elements that made all of us love Bollywood films in the first place, namely pure and honest sentimentality, wonderful songs and a simple big heart that's purely of the people.

And this is exactly why I'm getting unreasonably excited with "Barfi", and its heartwarming success both in India and worldwide. Superficially it's sort of an Indian answer to "Amelie", that huge worldwide French hit from almost 10 years ago, combined with a little bit of that vogue for silent films that "The Artist" brought back last year. In style, it's almost a spot-on combination of those two films (with all the annoyances that come with those two films, to those films detractors at least), though the content is something else.

Telling the story of "Barfi" (real name Murphy, but mispronounced as such because he's a deaf-mute and played by Ranbir Kapoor, grandson of the legendary Raj Kapoor) and his love for Shruti (played by the beautiful Telugu actress Ileana D'Cruz) and later on his even truer love for Jhilmil (former Miss World Priyanka Chopra), an autistic girl and his longtime childhood friend, the film is simply as beautiful a story about true love as can be told.

Told with a refreshing (and shocking) love for the aesthetics of silent film slapstick comedy, the movie is filled with chases and purely physical comedy set pieces that references and even steals from silent era staples like the Keystone Kops, Buster Keaton and most of all Charlie Chaplin. Though not lacking in dialogue, the film is mostly told through sign language, physical gestures and glances, with a little help from the wonderful music by Pritam Chakraborty, and of course the absolutely dreamy and magical songs that pepper the film, particularly "Main Kya Karoon" and "Kyon".

The cosmetics maybe foreign, but the film's heart is unmistakably Bollywood, selling us the dream of true love with total confidence and conviction, using the aforementioned classic Bollywood elements of pure and honest sentimentality, wonderful songs, and an unashamedly simple and big heart that's purely of the people and for the people.

I haven't cried like this at a Bollywood movie in a long time. I may have shed a few tears when I watched "3 Idiots" a few years back, but it was nothing compared to the way my heart swelled and my cheeks became wet with tears of bittersweet joy watching this movie, especially when it arrived at the moment where the love triangle between Barfi, Shruti and Jhilmil reached the inevitable point of making the choice between your own happiness or your loved one's happiness.

Being a hopeless romantic, I always knew which choice I would make should I ever be presented with such a choice, but certain events in my life that happened in the last year or so almost made me forget that, and I feel thankful that this movie has managed to make me a total believer in selfless true love again.

So I'd just like to say well done to everyone involved in the making of this magical film, from director Anurag Basu (I've no idea he had it in him to make something this good) to lead actor Ranbir Kapoor (wonderfully channelling both Chaplin and his grandfather Raj Kapoor's own tramp persona made famous in "Awara" and "Shree 420") and lead actresses D'Cruz and Chopra, both doing outstandingly touching and never overstated work. Getting nominated by India as its representative for Best Foreign Language Film at next year's Oscars ahead of the more fancied "Gangs Of Wasseypur", I'd have to say that I have no complaints at all.
