A bug feast fit for Aztec kings makes a comeback

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 07:48 PM PDT

October 03, 2013

A feast fit for an Aztec king is making a comeback in Mexican restaurants serving some of the insect delicacies once relished by the country's ancient rulers.

It's not Montezuma's revenge, but can you stomach it?

From the corner cantina to the refined white-linen cafe, chefs are writing up menus that could make a foodie's skin crawl: furry worms, fly larvae and crunchy grasshoppers are just a few of the flavors being resurrected.

"We are going through an insect boom," said Daniel Ovadia, chef of Mexico City's high-end Paxia restaurant.

"The escamoles - ant larvae that cost up to $100 per kilo - disappear immediately," he said, referring to the eggs known as "Mexican caviar."

Ovadia freezes the eggs before frying them on a pan, otherwise the heat would make the precious caviar explode. He then serves them on a plate with guacamole and sprinkles dried chiles on top, returning some of the earthy texture of their former habitat.

His restaurant also serves the azotador, a worm with black fur, or shield bugs - known as jumiles in Mexico - that crawl around the plate with their six legs and wiggly antennae.

The jumiles, he explained, "make an impact when they are served alive because they taste better like that."

"We are experiencing nostalgia," Ovadia said, and chefs are seizing on this yearning for the past by "giving value to the land."

Crunchy grasshopper

While such lively pre-Hispanic ingredients have now crawled their way onto porcelain plates of ritzy restaurants, they have long been standard fare at more laid-back joints, like Chon, in the capital's blue-collar La Merced barrio.

"Everything that walks, flies or crawls goes into the pan," said chef Fortino Rojas as he cooked an egg omelette with fly larvae.

One of his creations is a mix of ant larvae with chrysanthemum petals and mango sauce.

But Rojas warns that such foods may not last much longer because environmental pollution is destroying their habitat.

Next to the city's famed San Juan market, Pedro Hernandez sells bugs like crispy grasshoppers that are eaten with garlic and olive oil or lime as well as chunky maguey worms that live off the agave plant used to make tequila.

"We come here to buy them every rain season, we don't miss the chance," said Margarita Martin, a homemaker who bought half a kilo (one pound) of live, red maguey worms.

In June, Hernandez opened a restaurant, La Cocinita de San Juan, next to his shop where customers can try cooked insects or "buy the raw little critter and take the recipe home," he said.

Nicole Olivares, a medical student, tried for the first time fried maguey worms on a bed of sopes - maize dough shaped in a circle.

"They're very good. They taste like meat," she said.

Her lunch partner, high school teacher Miguel Diaz, said the Mexican palate has "Westernized" and forgotten foods that "in addition to being tasty, are very nutritious."

Bugs against hunger

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization not only believes that bugs have nutritional benefits, the agency even suggested in a recent report that they can help combat hunger affecting two billion people worldwide.

They can also act as an important supplement for children enduring malnutrition, the report said.

Gabriela Jimenez, an entomologist at National Autonomous University of Mexico, said the protein content of insects such as grasshoppers is double that of beef.

"All insects have amino acid which is essential for humans, and their life cycle moves quickly. They become adults within two months of being born on average while a female produces 800 offspring."

Jimenez said Mexico, which competes with the United States for the title of the world's fattest country, will develop a bigger appetite for insects.

"They are not fattening," she said. "You can make flour with any insect." – AFP, October 3, 2013.

Le Bernardin retains title of best restaurant in New York according to Zagat

October 03, 2013

Hot on the heels of the Michelin awards, Zagat has released the results of its restaurant rankings for New York City, giving the top spot to French seafood eatery Le Bernardin for the fifth straight year in a row.

While the Michelin guide awards stars based on the reviews of individual inspectors, the crowd-sourced burgundy guide is based on the reviews of its readers. And according to diners in New York, French chef Eric Ripert's "fine dining temple" is the gold standard in the city as it's been able to maintain a stronghold on the top spot for the fifth year in a row with a score of 29 out of 30.

In addition to being named the best restaurant in New York, this year's win marks Le Bernardin's 12th overall victory in the category of Top Food, the most of any restaurant in the history of Zagat's annual survey. It was also voted the most popular dining destination in the city.

Le Bernardin retained its three-star status in the latest Michelin guide for 2014.

In response to the double victory, Ripert took to Facebook to thank his team, posting an Instagram video of the restaurant staff celebrating.

"We are feeling overwhelmed at LB today... we are so thankful to the Michelin Guide (3 stars) and Zagat (top in food and popularity) for including us again this year. Maguy and I are so grateful to our entire LB family who work so hard each and every day and also to everyone who has shown us their support," he wrote.

The Zagat ranking was compiled from the reviews of more than 48,100 diners who wrote about 2,000 restaurants.

Rounding out the top five restaurants in the food category are Bouley Restaurant, Per Se, Daniel and Eleven Madison Park.

The Zagat survey also includes the best restaurants for chicken, burgers, pizza, noodles, Mexican and Korean fare. On the latter, both Michelin inspectors and Zagat readers agreed that Jungsik offers the best Korean cuisine. The restaurant earned two stars in the Michelin guide, a first for the New York edition.

Home favourite Li advances in China, Ivanovic out

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 08:53 AM PDT

October 02, 2013

Home favourite Li Na (pic) overcame Germany's Sabine Lisicki 7-5 6-4 at the China Open on today to set up a quarter-final showdown with former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

The Czech, who won the Japan Open last weekend, overcame Italian fifth seed Sara Errani 6-4 6-7(3) 6-3 in their third round clash at the prestigious US$5 million Beijing tournament.

World number four Agnieszka Radwanska was one of a number of high profile women to win through in second round action on the hard courts at the National Tennis Centre as the Pole dispatched promising American Madison Keys 6-3 6-2.

Radwanksa will next face Slovenian wildcard Polona Hercog, who stunned former world number one Ana Ivanovic 6-4 6-4 in the day's only upset.

"It was a big challenge for me to go out there on a big court and play against Ana Ivanovic, and I'm just really happy the way it turned out," Hercog told the WTA Tour. "It's probably one of the biggest victories for me."

Germany's Andrea Petkovic provided the upset of the first round when she ousted Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka and the Bosnia-born world number 43 followed that up with a second round win over another grand slam champion on Wednesday.

Petkovic again needed to go the distance as she beat former French and U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6 6-4 6-1.

"This is the first tournament that I've been able to really keep up my intensity and keep up my focus. I think I've played two good matches," Petkovic said after setting up a clash with Czech Lucie Safarova in the third round.

"Personally it's really important to see that I can still beat the players on the top level, two past grand slam champions. It's just a big boost for my confidence, no matter what happens now in the future."

The victories though were only warm-up acts for the home fans keen to see their compatriot Li in action.

Li, the first Asian to win a grand slam singles title when she triumphed at the 2011 French Open, had the crowd happy as she scored a break in her 13th seeded opponent's first service game.

The world number five ran in to trouble though as she attempted to serve out the set as Lizicki broke back to level at 5-5 only for Li to break again and win it 7-5.

Another break came midway through the second set as Li wrapped it up 6-4 despite a match total of seven double faults.

That serving issue will need to be resolved if she is to find a way past in-form Kvitova.

World number one Serena Williams is back in action tomorrow when she takes on Maria Kirilenko in the third round. – Reuters, October 2, 2013.

Lippi’s Guangzhou storm into Asian final

Brazilian ace Muriqui reached a tournament-record 13 goals with his second brace in two games as the Chinese champions' South American attack floored Kashiwa at a rocking Tianhe Sport Centre.

The emphatic victory, following last week's 4-1 rout in Kashiwa, keeps Guangzhou on course to end China's 23-year Asian title drought after Liaoning won the Asian Club Championship in 1990.

They are the first Chinese team to reach the Asian decider since Dalian were runners-up in the Asian Club Championship, the Champions League's predecessor, in 1998.

In the two-legged final, Guangzhou will face either Iran's Esteghlal or FC Seoul, who are playing later. The South Korean team are 2-0 up after last week's home leg.

In front of a big, red-clad crowd and with Lippi's gold medallion gleaming from his open-necked shirt, Guangzhou refused to give Kashiwa any chance to settle as they made a lightning start.

Elkeson drew a brilliant one-handed save from Takanori Sugeno and he had a goal disallowed, a header from a Gao Lin cross, within the first 15 minutes for an apparent shove on a defender.

But on 16 minutes, there was no doubt about the opener as a corner dropped obligingly at Elkeson's feet, and the Brazilian took one touch and rammed it home from six yards.

Zhang Linpeng wobbled the woodwork with a glorious shot from 25 yards, and Gao's header forced another save from Sugeno after a sumptuous move as the hosts turned on the style.

Elkeson had another header into the net chalked off after Qatari referee Abdulrahman Abdou took issue with his close contact with Kashiwa goalkeeper Sugeno.

Kashiwa's few glimpses of goal were coming mainly from corners, but they had a mini-revival after half-time when Wataru Hashimoto and Brazilian forward Jorge Wagner both went close.

However, Sugeno again had to keep out Elkeson before Argentine maestro Dario Conca, unmarked in the Kashiwa box, headed in substitute Rong Hao's hanging cross on 57 minutes.

The game was up for Kashiwa, now 6-1 down on aggregate, but Tetsuro Ota missed a great chance to make it look more respectable when he curled a shot wide from close range.

And the night got even worse for the J-League side when Muriqui, fed by a clever ball from Conca, held off a marker and buried his shot to make it 3-0.

Kashiwa's Masato Kudo hit the bar with a superb shot but at the other end Muriqui, fed again by Conca, burst into the box and rounded Sugeno for 4-0 -- and his record 13th goal of the competition.

To put Guangzhou's victory in perspective, Emperor's Cup-holders Kashiwa had been unbeaten throughout the tournament until last week's 4-1 home defeat to the Chinese side.

Lippi, who coached Italy to victory in the 2006 World Cup, will now attempt to add the Asian continental title to the European Champions League which he won with Juventus in 1996. – AFP, October 2, 2013.

Marc Jacobs to leave Louis Vuitton

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 05:32 AM PDT

October 02, 2013

Marc Jacobs (pic), the US designer credited with transforming Louis Vuitton from "stodgy luggage house" to global fashion giant today received a standing ovation as news of his departure broke.

The US designer with a flair for showmanship is wrapping up his 16-year tenure to concentrate on a stock exchange flotation of his own brand, estimated by market sources to be "approaching the billion-dollar leagues".

Jacobs and Bernard Arnault, chairman of Louis Vuitton parent company LVMH, confirmed the move to industry journal Women's Wear Daily following months of speculation.

The news coincided with Jacobs' Louis Vuitton show in Paris on the last day of the ready-to-wear collections and followed contract negotiations between Jacobs, whose contract had been due to expire at the end of the year, Louis Vuitton and LVMH.

The 50-year-old Jacobs took over at Louis Vuitton in 1997, presenting the luxury brand's first ever ready-to-wear collection.

"Jacobs leaves Vuitton after a dazzling 16-year run during which he orchestrated the transformation of the leather goods giant from a stodgy luggage house to a global fashion presence," WWD said.

"He pioneered the concept of the fashion-art runway collaboration, first with Stephen Sprouse and later, with several artists including Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince," it said, recalling how the bags he designed with Sprouse and Murakami became global phenomena.

It is understood that the initial public offering (IPO), expected within the next three years, will require Jacobs to be fully focused on his own brand in order to ensure the highest possible valuation.

A successor has not been named but Louis Vuitton is understood to have held talks with former Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere about succeeding Jacobs as artistic director, sources told WWD earlier.

Frenchman Ghesquiere parted company with Balenciaga in November 2012 following a 15-year tenure.

LVMH owns a substantial stake in the New York-based Jacobs business, and has overseen the introduction of the brand Marc by Marc Jacobs and roll-out of a global network of stores.

Citing market sources, WWD said estimates for the entire Jacobs brand were "approaching the billion-dollar leagues".

Jacobs attended the Parsons School of Design in New York before joining forces with Robert Duffy who has been his business partner since the mid-1980s.

His first collection for the Marc Jacobs brand came in 1986. Marc by Marc Jacobs was introduced in 2001.

The news of his departure came as nine days of ready-to-wear fashion for spring/summer 2014 were due to wrap up in Paris later tonight. – AFP, October 2, 2013.

Big tobacco pushes into e-cigs

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 05:27 AM PDT

October 02, 2013

The former Playboy centrefold strikes a sultry pose in a bar, the sleek black cigarette in her hand and a handsome dude at her side.

"I love being single. But here's what I don't love: a kiss that tastes like an ashtray. Blecch," she says.

"Now that I've switched to blu, I feel better about myself. And I feel free to have one almost anywhere."

Sex and freedom: the slick advertisement for Lorillard's blu eCigs, starring TV personality Jenny McCarthy, shows how Big Tobacco is pushing into electronic cigarettes.

They are seeking to take command of a market they fear could one day supplant traditional tobacco.

In just the past few months British American Tobacco, Lorillard, Reynolds American, Altria and others have launched e-cigarettes, with a message that they can be smoked or "vaped" anywhere that regular cigarettes are banned or disdained.

"We see huge potential for this market, both domestically and globally," said Richard Smith, spokesman for Reynolds American, parent of tobacco powerhouse RJ Reynolds and producer of the VUSE e-cigarette, which it recently introduced in Colorado to test the market.

"Adult tobacco consumers are making it known that they want convenient tobacco products they can use in a variety of settings, giving them the freedom to enjoy tobacco on their own terms," he said.

Lorillard's blu – a brand it bought for US$135 million in April – has stolen a march in the US market on competitors.

Altria, parent of Philip Morris, has test-launched its MarkTen in Indiana, and BAT kicked off the Vype across Britain in July.

Meanwhile NJOY, an independent with Silicon Valley and Hollywood startup capital, has also carved out significant market space.

Bonnie Herzog, an industry specialist at Wells Fargo Securities, forecasts US$2 billion in e-cigarette sales in the United States by the end of this year – 2% of the tobacco market – and US$10 billion by 2017.

"Consumption of e-cigs could surpass consumption of traditional cigs within the next decade," she said.

Companies say the recognition level of e-cigarettes is already widespread in the United States and Europe. Some 37% of smokers in Europe have sampled them.

But the take-up rate is still low, and the big tobacco firms say their challenge is to figure out why.

"The experience is quite different than a cigarette," said Des Naughton, managing director of Nicoventures, the BAT subsidiary behind Vype.

"The product and how it performs is quite different from a cigarette. Obviously there are people who try it and find it's not for them."

The products available are diverse: disposable and rechargeable, some designed to look like old-fashioned cigarettes and some striving to be different.

Some stick to traditional tobacco flavours while others, like blu, explore tastes like those in an ice cream parlour: Cherry Crush, Java Jolt or Pina Colada.

"The opportunity remains for companies like ourselves... to understand the potential, the technology involved, and improve what's on offer," said Naughton.

"You can smoke at a basketball game"

Marketing too is still in infancy.

NJOY, in a pioneering television ad during the hugely watched Super Bowl championship in February, emphasised "the look, feel and flavour of the real thing."

Naughton says the focus for BAT is still in enlightening consumers, persuading them to "give it a go".

Blu however has gone the lifestyle route, long a sure winner for cigarettes, emphasising freedom and fun with McCarthy and actor Stephen Dorff.

"With blu, you can smoke at a basketball game when you want to," Dorff says in a TV spot. "We're all adults here. It's time we take our freedom back."

The big companies are expected to squeeze aside scores of small e-cigarette pioneers as they push into the market.

"There are great advantages to scale in this industry," said blu's president Jim Raporte.

"Innovation will be a key factor in the success of the players within this space."

The big challenge is regulation. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to propose to regulate e-cigarettes like tobacco in the coming weeks.

European regulators are trying to determine whether to control them like pharmaceuticals, regular cigarettes, or other products.

Regulation could limit distribution, sales and advertising. For instance, tobacco ads have been banned from US television since 1971, but so far e-cigarettes can advertise.

Naughton backs regulating them like over-the-counter drugs. But he warned that if e-cigarettes face tight controls on testing and review, it could stifle quick product innovation and development.

Reynolds' Smith said they believe the FDA will regulate e-cigarettes "based on sound science".

Since Reynolds' other products compete under strict regulation, he added: "We have no reason to believe that (VUSE) cannot do the same." – AFP, October 2, 2013.

Cameras capture Sumatran rhino in Indonesian Borneo

Posted: 02 Oct 2013 05:06 AM PDT

October 02, 2013

Hidden cameras have captured images of the critically endangered Sumatran rhino on the Indonesian part of Borneo island, where it was thought to have long ago died out, the WWF said today.

Sixteen camera traps – remote-controlled cameras with motion sensors frequently used in ecological research – filmed the rhino walking through the forest and wallowing in mud in Kutai Barat, East Kalimantan province.

The footage, filmed on June 23, June 30 and August 3, is believed to show different rhinos although the WWF said confirmation of this will require further study.

There were once Sumatran rhinos all over Borneo but their numbers have dwindled dramatically and they were thought to now exist only on the Malaysian part of the island.

But the research disclosed today, a joint effort between the WWF and authorities in Kutai Barat, shows that the animal is still present on the Indonesian side of Borneo.

"This physical evidence is very important, as it forms the basis to develop and implement more comprehensive conservation efforts for the Indonesian rhinoceros," said Indonesian Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan.

"This finding represents the hard work of many parties, and will hopefully contribute to achieving Indonesia's target of 3% per year rhino population growth."

He urged officials and environmentalists to try and come up with a scientific estimate of the remaining Sumatran rhino population in Indonesian Borneo.

The research was unveiled at the start of an international meeting on efforts to protect rhinos in Bandar Lampung on Indonesia's western island of Sumatra, with governments from Bhutan, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and Nepal represented.

There are estimated to be fewer than 275 Sumatran rhinos remaining in the wild, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

There are only a few substantial populations still in existence, most of them on Sumatra.

Poaching is considered the main reason for the dramatic decline in numbers, with the rhino's horn and some of its other body parts considered highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine. – AFP, October 2, 2013.

Dirogol? Kita kena seimbang, biarlah kita rasional.

"Mereka bukan manusia biasa. Mereka penjenayah berat," kata ahli Parlimen Bagan Datoh itu lagi.

Sesi perbahasan pindaan rang undang-undang Pencegahan Jenayah kini memasuki hari kedua selepas dibacakan kali pertama awal minggu lalu.

Memanglah Islam melarang menyebut tentang keburukan seseorang, apa lagi setelah matinya.

Ceramahnya banyak dihalang. Percayalah kalau hendak tahu kebaikannya tunggulah dia mati.

- 2 Oktober, 2013.

Moderation

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim founded Malaysia's largest law partnership before focusing on politics. He was a minister in the Abdullah administration, was in Umno, PKR and last in KITA as its president.

The Prime Minister once reminded the world community in New York that moderation is the key to solving our many problems. He made particular reference to the Muslim community, within which sectarian killings and violence are taking a heavy toll on human lives.

Like other Muslim leaders, he took great pains to explain that Islam is a religion of peace and is moderate in its teachings. The question, then, is why the most violent and barbaric conduct is often being carried out by groups who call themselves Muslim, be it al-Shabaab , the Taliban or Al-Qaeda.

To answer this question, we have to examine the success story of Indonesia and the failing story of Pakistan.

Muslims form the biggest majority in Indonesia, yet after 60 years of independence their economic standing still lags behind that of non-Muslims in the country. Some sources say that as much as 70 per cent of the country's wealth is owned by non-Muslims. The Indonesian Government realised that in order for the economic situation of the country's Muslims to improve, Indonesia had to be a modern and viable democracy.

The Indonesian Government focused on building massive infrastructure projects as well as harnessing their human resources. Parliament did not waste time debating if Indonesia was an Islamic state or not, but on whether the lives of Muslims had improved. Economic matters took priority—although they did have to deal with occasional side issues like beauty contests and the publication of a local version of Playboy magazine.

The contrast with Pakistan is marked. The people spend all their money and resources on building nuclear bombs. They would rather go to war with India and other "Western stooges", burn buildings and kill Shiites. They much prefer blowing up schools and teachers than improving the lives of the people. The culture of hate and violence is rife among their community leaders and nothing is being done to stop this reign of terror. Pakistan is probably the most ungovernable Muslim country to date.

In Malaysia too, Muslims are economically weak despite being in power with absolute majority for over 50 years. We blame our history, our multiracial makeup and other silly reasons for our backwardness.

The truth is we are too preoccupied with matters that do not improve the lives of the majority of the people. Some of our leaders are only interested in power so they can punish others or impose their thinking and values on everyone else.

Instead of focusing on how to make Muslims more resourceful and have a better economic life, they spend their days talking about how the enemies of Islam are causing the failures of Muslims. They will not admit that they are the real stumbling block to the growth of the Muslim community.

I hope that in 20 years the Prime Minister will be able to return to New York to tell the world what a moderate country Malaysia has become.

Let him showcase this country as an example of tolerance in a pluralistic democracy. Let him show what living in a moderate Muslim country really means, so that others can experience Islam as a moderate religion. But this will not happen if he continues to pander to ultra-nationalists and Islamists who are seeking power to ruin the country.

The Prime Minister must not assume that speeches in New York will reverberate and find acceptance here. He must clearly spell out the line which must not be crossed by power-hungry individuals who are out to destroy racial and religious harmony in the country.

When Algeria was experimenting with democracy and the multi-party system in the late 1980's, its leaders were warned that they could not allow radical Islamists to cross this line: Algeria had to remain a democracy and only those who supported this system should be allowed to participate in the political process.

This call was never heeded and the group that wanted to impose terror and their own idea of a perfect society were allowed to participate in the election. The resulting power struggle cost 200,000 Algerian lives. History repeated itself in Egypt only recently.

We do not want to take the route of Algeria, Pakistan or Egypt. We want to take the route that Indonesia has taken. Indonesia will be the modern, successful and moderate state of the 22nd century where Muslims can live in harmony with others. Malaysia can follow suit if we are prepared to learn the lessons of the past.

As a first step, we need to strengthen our ties with Indonesia. There is so much we can learn from them. It would be helpful if our Ambassador can be someone who has a strong understanding of the historical and cultural ties between the two countries. This person can help cement the bilateral relationship so that these two Muslim countries can become the pride of the Muslim world.

The affable and cigar-smoking Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim, our newly-appointed Ambassador to Indonesia, should be happy if the Prime Minister were to relocate him to say, Brazil or Mexico, countries that are more exotic but less critical to our future. - October 2, 2013
