Hockey squad hope to win country’s first Universiade gold medal

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 07:16 AM PDT

June 26, 2013

The National hockey squad hope to win the country's first gold medal in the World University Games (Universiade) held in Kazan, Russia, despite being drawn in a tough group.

Flag bearer for the games scheduled from July 6 to 17, Mohammad Noor Faeez Ibrahim said the players would remain focused and committed to advance from Group A.

"I do not anticipate any major hurdles but we need to be cautious against South Africa who I guess will be our major threat in the group. Group B is a tougher group, especially with Germany in the list," he told reporters at the

Jalur Gemilang flag handing ceremony for the Universiade by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Malaysia, drawn in Group A with Poland, Russia, Italy and South Africa, play their first match against Poland on July 7.- Bernama, June 26, 2013.

Wimbledon rules orange shoes out, but not coloured undies

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 06:47 AM PDT

June 26, 2013

Roger Federer received orders from Wimbledon organisers on Wednesday to change his orange-soled shoes that breach an all-white rule although women players will not be pulled up for wearing coloured knickers.

Wimbledon, the world's oldest tennis tournament, has the strictest dress code in tennis, stating for the past 40 years that players must wear "predominantly" white.

The rules stipulate no solid mass of colour, no fluorescent colours, little or no dark and bold colours, and preferably all white shirts, shorts and skirts.

The tournament's clothing police allow no exceptions, even for top players like Federer, the seven-times champion ranked the world's eighth most powerful celebrity by Forbes magazine this week.

"He has been asked to change his shoes," said a Wimbledon spokesman ahead of the Swiss player's match on Wednesday against Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky on Centre Court.

He said several other players had also been asked to change their shoes to abide by the rules but no other warnings had been issued for other violations of the dress code.

The sight of coloured knickers emerging as women rivals Maria Sharapova from Russia and American Serena Williams serve failed to make organisers see red and the coloured nails sported by a list of women players on court have not been ruled out.

Knickers have caused a stir at Wimbledon in the past, dating back to 1949 when American Gussie Moran was accused of "putting sin and vulgarity into tennis" by wearing lace-trimmed knickers at the All England Club in south London.

Knickers, logos and style

Six years ago Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin shocked organisers by wearing a pair of crimson underpants beneath her white outfit, which had officials reaching for the rule book but to no avail.

"The rules state that players can wear any colour underwear they like provided it is no longer than their shorts or skirt. Anything else must be white," said a Wimbledon spokesman.

The all-white dress code is one of the traditions at Wimbledon, which dates back to 1877 when women wore ground-length dresses on the court, and officials are keen to uphold standards.

In 1985, US player Anne White was called to one side after arriving on court in an all-in-one, head-to-toe lycra bodysuit to play against Pam Shriver. She was asked to wear something more conventional and obliged but lost her match.

However this year, second seed Victoria Azarenka and Czech player Eva Birnerova played in white leggings on the first day of the two-week championship although it was unclear if this was a fashion choice or to stay warm in chilly temperatures.

Second seed Azarenka had to pull out of the tournament through injury on Wednesday.

Logos are forbidden on any of Wimbledon's 19 courts with Czech American player Martina Navratilova in 2004 famously taking scissors to her hat to cut out an offending logo.

However, British champion Andy Murray, who beat Benjamin Becker in his first round, was not hauled up for sporting the name of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity on his sleeve.

The world No. 2 is hoping to win the tournament for his former doubles partner, Ross Hutchins, who is being treated for Hodgkin's Lymphoma at The Royal Marsden hospital and was in the royal box on opening day on Monday to watch Murray in action.

Despite the dress code limiting fashion flair on the court, some players try to add their own style with mixed success.

Sharapova, the world No. 3 who designs clothing for Nike, is closely watched by fashion followers and in 2008 turned up in a tuxedo-style top and shorts, much to her opponent's chagrin.

"It's very pleasant to beat Maria. Why? Well, I don't like her outfit. That was one of my motivations," said her compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva after beating Sharapova.- Reuters, June 26, 2013.

Two Swedish teens convicted for Instagram insults

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 09:22 PM PDT

June 26, 2013

Instagram logo displayed on an Apple iPhone. AFP Pic, 26 June, 2013. Two Swedish teenage girls were found guilty of defamation on Tuesday for posting sexual insults about other youngsters on the photo sharing website Instagram.

The court convicted the girls, aged 15 and 16, for writing explicit, derogatory remarks next to pictures of 38 young people, mostly girls, via an anonymous account on Instagram.

Posted in December, the comments quickly spread on the Internet before the account was shut down and caused hundreds of young people to take to the streets in Gothenburg, the teenagers' hometown, in protests that turned violent.

Cyber-bullying among young people has become an increasing concer with the growth of social media and a lawyer in the Swedish case said the convictions showed that people who post defamatory comments, believing they are anonymous, can still be vulnerable to prosecution.

"Many think they are anonymous when they are sitting behind a computer and therefore take greater liberties than if that anonymity wasn't there," the plaintiffs' attorney, Arash Raoufi, said.

"The verdict sends a signal to young people and society that this indignity culture cannot be allowed to exist. I hope it will also result in parents being more alert to what kids do at the computer," he said.

In the Gothenburg case, the plaintiffs provided screen shots of the derogatory remarks as evidence while forensic evidence tied the girls to the account.

The girls, one of whom had confessed to being behind the account while the other denied involvement, were both fined and one was also sentenced to community service.

Workers in emerging economies most concerned how companies behave

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 05:57 PM PDT

June 26, 2013

Workers in emerging countries are more concerned about corporate behavior than employees in more developed nations, according to a poll released on Tuesday.

The Ipsos survey of 24 nations showed that feelings about corporate responsibility were highest in Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and India, where more than half of workers said it was very important for their employers to be responsible to society and the environment.

But in Japan and France less than 20 percent of workers felt the same way, and in Spain, Belgium, Germany, South Korea and China the number was less than 30 percent.

In other developed nations it ranged from 30 percent in Britain and 32 percent in the United States to 35 percent in Australia and 37 percent in Canada.

"The main finding, no matter where you look, is that companies can't neglect corporate social responsibility. People say it is important for their employers to do it," Trent Ross, a senior vice president with Ipsos, said of the poll results.

Overall, 61 percent of respondents thought companies should pay more attention to the environment, and 52 said they should contribute more to society.

Workers also consider a company's behavior when making choices about products and services. About half of people in Indonesia, Brazil and Mexico said they are likely to think about a firm's social responsibility when buying something, compared to 15 percent or less in France, Japan, Belgium and Germany.

The three most important things companies must do to be respected, according to the poll, are: prioritize workplace safety, contribute to the socioeconomic development of the country, and abide by local laws and rights.

"In the western democracies it is the burden of governments to do these things and in the developing world it is the burden of multi-national companies to provide this lift because governments are less able to do it," Ross said in an interview.

Ipsos questioned a total of 18,150 adults for the online survey conducted from April 2 to 16. Approximately 1,000 people took part in each nation, apart from Argentina, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Russia and Turkey, where about 500 people contributed to the survey.

The margin of error is +/- 3.5 percentage points in a poll of 1,000 and +/- 5.0 percentage points in one of 500. - Reuters, June 26, 2013

Oprah tops Forbes most powerful celebrity list

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 04:47 AM PDT

June 26, 2013

After two years as a runner-up, Oprah Winfrey was named the most powerful celebrity on Wednesday by Forbes, heading the six women and four men who make up the top 10.

It was the fifth time the former talk show host who runs her own TV network has headed the annual ranking of 100 celebrities.

Singer Lady Gaga came in second, followed by director/producer Steven Spielberg and singers Beyonce and Madonna.

"There is nobody else with that kind of consistency and power," said Dorothy Pomerantz of Forbes.com. "There are only three people who have been on every single one of our lists since 1999. It is Oprah, Howard Stern and Steven Spielberg."

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, who was No. 1 last year, dropped to 12th place.

With earnings of $77 million from June 2012 to 2013, Winfrey was not the highest earning celebrity, an honor that went to Madonna who made $125 million. But Forbes said Winfrey's position in Hollywood and her presence in the press, on television and in social media propelled her to the No. 1 spot.

"She still wields an enormous amount of power, which is really what we look for in our fame matrix. She is taking this cable network and turning it around just through the sheer force of her will, her connections and her ability."

Despite hip surgery, which forced her to cut short a tour, Lady Gaga earned $80 million in the past 12 months which, along with her army of fans and powerful social media presence, assured her second place.

"She is still a huge force in pop music. Even when she is not playing, people are talking abut her and speculating about her," Pomerantz said.

Spielberg, with earnings of $100 million in the last year, was the top man on the list, ahead of rock star Bon Jovi at No. 7, tennis champion Roger Federer and Justin Bieber, the youngest member of the list, squeezed into the top ten at No. 9.

Although only 23, sixth place singer Taylor Swift, made the list for the first time and rounded out the top 10 along with Emmy-award winning TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

Forbes based a celebrity's earnings on income from tours, books, contracts, endorsements, movies and residuals. Each celebrity was given a marketability score, developed by California market research firm E-Poll.

It gauged fame and influence by how often celebrities appear in the media. It used Starcount, a Singapore-based company that looks at 11 social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, to determine their presence in social media.

"In today's world celebrities have this enormous ability to reach out to their fans, who really are their customers, and to sell their product, which is really themselves. If they don't take advantage of that it hurts them," said Pomerantz.

Pop stars, most notably Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Barbados-born singer Rihanna, are particularly good with handling social media, according to Forbes.

Top celebrity couples include Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z (32), American football quarterback Tom Brady (65) and his model wife Gisele Bundchen (81), and actor Ashton Kutcher (53) and his girlfriend Mila Kunis (89).

Best actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, who was No. 49, is a newcomer to the list this year, as is Hugh Jackman, who was No. 11, and new father Channing Tatum (23).

Michael Jackson son to testify, as anniversary marked

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 04:56 PM PDT

June 26, 2013

Fans memorialize pop superstar Michael Jackson on the anniversary of his death at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. - AFP, 26 June, 2013.Michael Jackson's son Prince is set to testify at his family's trial against tour promoter AEG Live, reports said Tuesday, as relatives and fans marked the fourth anniversary of his death.

The 16-year-old, the eldest of the singer's three children, could take the stand as early as Wednesday at the trial, in which the Jackson family is suing AEG Live for hiring the doctor convicted of killing him in 2009.

Lawyers at the Los Angeles trial, which started at the end of April, would not confirm media reports that the teenager would be the next witness, after a medical expert who has already testified for two days.

"Not today," was all Jackson family lawyer Brian Panish would tell AFP Tuesday, when asked if Prince Jackson would be next to take the stand. A family spokesman also said she could not confirm the scheduled appearance.

CNN cited lawyers as saying the teenager would be the next witness after Dr. Gordon Matheson, a sports medicine professor who has testified since Monday. Prince Jackson will likely testify Wednesday, it reported.

Jackson died at his rented Holmby Hills mansion in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009 of an overdose of surgical anesthetic propofol, administered by his personal doctor Conrad Murray to help him sleep.

Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 over the death of the 50-year-old self-styled King of Pop.

Jackson's mother Katherine is suing AEG Live, alleging that they negligently hired and were responsible for Murray, a cardiologist, and should have known that he was unsuitable to care for the singer.

The current trial, and the 2009 court case, have aired details of Jackson's long-time struggle with insomnia and abuse of a number of drugs, including propofol.

Fans of the singer gathered Tuesday at the Forest Lawn celebrity cemetery, just north of Los Angeles, where Jackson's body is buried. Huge numbers of flowers were placed on his grave.

Jackson's daughter Paris was also listed before the AEG trial as among witnesses due to be called. But it is now thought unlikely she will testify, after she was hospitalized earlier this month following a suicide attempt. - AFP, 26 June, 2013.

Sunday with a ‘rock star’ - Johan Mahmood Merican

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 04:57 PM PDT

June 26, 2013

Johan Merican is CEO of TalentCorp. He believes it's great to be foolishly optimistic and good fun to try making a difference. You can give your feedback by emailing [email protected]

Ms. Indra Nooyi, Chairman / CEO of PepsiCo was recently in Kuala Lumpur to speak at the Global Summit of Women. In conjunction with her visit, I had the distinct privilege of being at a roundtable session between her and a small group of Malaysian CEOs from the likes of Maybank, Axiata, KL Kepong, Astro and Shell.

The session happened on a Sunday morning. My colleague, as she was leaving her house, was asked by her daughter why she had to go to work on a Sunday. My colleague responded that it wasn't really work but more like getting the chance to meet your favourite celebrity rock star. I wouldn't disagree with her analogy.

A corporate superstar by any measure, Indra Nooyi has consistently ranked as one of the top female CEOs in the world. As an Asian and a woman who emerged as leader of an iconic American company, she is an inspiration.  Yes, for me, it was definitely cooler to get to meet Indra Nooyi than say, meeting Beyonce.

For those of us who had sacrificed our Sunday morning for the session, Indra Nooyi did not disappoint. From the moment she entered the room, Ms Nooyi exuded a strong presence but unlike a rock star, her demeanour was one of calm confidence and humility. She was passionate in speaking about Pepsi's mission of 'Performance with Purpose' and the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Despite pressure from some quarters, Indra Nooyi has championed "Performance with purpose". This in essence is about capitalism with a conscience and for Pepsi, it was recognising the health consequence of its products.

Hence, under Ms Nooyi's leadership, Pepsi has worked to reduce sugar and salt in its core products, Pepsi and Lays chips; in addition to broadening its portfolio of healthier food products, such as Quaker oats and Tropicana juice.

For Ms Nooyi, having a corporate conscience or purpose was not in conflict or to the detriment of corporate performance. Having sustainable business practices in the areas of customer health, environment and talent management was not to be seen as a form of Corporate Social Responsibility but integral to delivering financial results.

The key is having the right time horizon – if too short termist, then clearly sustainability may appear to be at the cost of financial performance but in the medium and longer run, Pepsi's purpose will ultimately deliver profits and shareholder value.

When the company has purpose, Indra Nooyi explained, "employees are able to bring their whole self to work". Ms Nooyi recognised was that individual talents are more than just workers, they are also parents, have a role in their community, hold values and interests in causes.

What Pepsi wanted to avoid was to have employees park the rest of what defined themselves a person at the door of the office and come into work, a mere shell of themselves.

By having an organisation driven by purpose and one that truly embraces diversity and inclusion, Ms Nooyi believes then each and every Pepsi employee is able to bring their whole self to work and thus, deliver and achieve so much more.

For Pepsi, diversity and inclusion, whether in terms of gender, ethnicity or age, is integral to its talent management and business strategy. Diversity may be more challenging to manage but if effectively leveraged, drives superior results.

Pepsi has won many accolades for diversity and inclusion, plus it cannot be more strongly demonstrated than by having an Asian woman as CEO. Indra Nooyi noted how gender diversity was particularly relevant to countries like Malaysia, where women are an increasingly important part of the talent pool, accounting for the majority of graduates and yet, workforce participation rates for women remain significantly below that of men.

"If we don't find a way to help women at work, we will have a problem," Ms Indra Nooyi observed.

I couldn't help but note that Indra Nooyi's sharings were especially relevant for corporate Malaysia and for the nation as a whole. We need Malaysians to 'bring their whole self' to the business of driving Malaysia towards Vision 2020.

This can only happen if we have 'performance with purpose', take a longer term view and galvanise companies and country towards a common purpose, aspiration and dream. It is not just a nice-to-have, it is the right thing to do and also an economic imperative.

The issue of diversity and inclusion is particularly key for corporate Malaysia because only by involving all Malaysians and harnessing our collective and complementary strengths, will we be able to achieve our ambitious goals for our companies and nation. - June 26, 2013.

NFCorp saman Rafizi dan portal berita

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 02:11 AM PDT

June 26, 2013

- 26 Jun, 2013.
