Former F1 driver JJ Lehto sentenced for fatal boat crash

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 06:49 AM PST

HELSINKI, Dec 14 — Former Finnish Formula One driver and Le Mans winner Jyrki Jarvilehto, who raced as JJ Lehto, was sentenced today to two years and four months in jail for a drunken boat accident which killed his friend.

Finland's Lansi-Uudenmaan district court said that Jarvilehto (picture) was drunk and speeding on his boat in June 2010, when it hit a bridge support pillar in a canal in Raasepori, southern Finland.

Jarvilehto denied he was driving the boat when the crash happened, although the court said the victim's injuries indicated he was a passenger and Jarvilehto was the driver.

He is appealing the sentence, his lawyer told Finnish news agency STT.

The 45-year-old, managed by compatriot and 1982 world champion Keke Rosberg, drove in Formula One between 1989 and 1994.

His best result was a third place in a Dallara Judd in the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix.

The Finn also raced for Onyx, Sauber and Benetton in his 62 race F1 career before switching to sportscars and winning the Le Mans 24 Hours race in 1995 and 2005 with McLaren and Audi respectively. — Reuters

Buzzing Barca eye perfect year, says Iniesta

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 05:05 AM PST

YOKOHAMA, Dec 14 — Barcelona are still buzzing from their clasico victory over Real Madrid as they bid to complete a perfect year by winning the Club World Cup, midfielder Andres Iniesta said today.

Beating Real Madrid 3-1 at the Bernabeu last weekend to go top of La Liga, the perfect preparation for winning the inter-continental trophy for the second time in three years.

"We're still buzzing from the win at Real," Iniesta said before tomorrow's semi-final against Asian champions Al Sadd of Qatar.

Iniesta said today that Barcelona were looking forward to taking home the trophy to "give ourselves a wonderful Christmas present." — Reuters pic

"It has given us a real confidence boost and the spirit in the team is fantastic. We won La Liga and the Champions League and we're 100 per cent committed to completing the set.

"We respect our opponents but we want to take the trophy home to complete a perfect year and gives ourselves a wonderful Christmas present."

The Catalan giants captured the Club World Cup in 2009 in Abu Dhabi by beating Argentina's Estudiantes in the final but lost to Brazil's Internacional in 2006 in Japan.

"We have some bad memories from five years ago," said Iniesta. "It was a bitter pill to swallow but we've been able to turn those negative feelings into positives.

"Losing to Internacional made us a stronger team and we'll show that this time.

"Our motivation is sky high after beating Real but the Spanish league isn't won in December. We're fully focused on winning the Club World Cup now."

Brazil's Santos await in Sunday's final after the South American champions beat J-League champions Kashiwa Reysol 3-1 in the first semi-final in Toyota.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola insisted his side had no unfinished business in Japan despite getting ambushed in the 2006 final.

"We are not here for revenge," he said. "Revenge is never a good motivation. For the past year and a half, Barca have passed every test and come through every challenge thrown at us.

"We have had to come through a very tough Champions League competition to get here so we want to leave everything out there on the pitch and win the trophy.

"It won't be easy. Anything can happen over 90 minutes of football and Al Sadd could end up in the final instead of us if we're not right on our game."

Guardiola admitted, however, that his biggest problem was getting his players to adjust to the time difference after their 13-hour flight.

"Some of them are waking up at two or three in the morning still," said Guardiola. "But you just have to deal with jet lag. We will be fine by tomorrow's semi-final."

A trio of players, led by midfielder Xavi, blew the cobwebs away with a two-hour trip to Japan's ancient capital Kyoto — not to look at temples, but simply to ride the Bullet Train.

"It's a rare opportunity to play on this stage so we want to savour it," Iniesta added. "We will need to put in a proper shift for 90 minutes and be at our maximum level to win." — Reuters

LOS ANGELES, Dec 14 – The actors of civil rights drama "The Help" led the list of nominees for Screen Actors Guild film awards today with four nominations including for best ensemble cast in a movie.

The movie was closely followed by silent-era drama "The Artist" with three nominations for its actors, including best cast in a film. Joining them in that key category were the performers in comedy "Bridesmaids," drama "The Descendants" and director Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris."

The Screen Actors Guild, or SAG, awards are among the most-watched honours during Hollywood's film awards season, leading up to the Oscars in February, because actors make up one of the largest voting groups for Academy Awards.

As a result, their nominees are expected to earn many votes from members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars.

For best actor in a movie, SAG voters nominated Brad Pitt in "Moneyball," George Clooney with "The Descendants," Leonardo DiCaprio for "J. Edgar Hoover," Jean Dujardin in "The Artist" and Demain Bichir for "A Better Life."

Best film actress nominees were Glenn Close for "Albert Nobbs," Viola Davis in "The Help," Meryl Streep with "The Iron Lady," "Tilda Swinton" in "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and Michelle Williams for "My Week with Marilyn."

While movie honours take top billing at the SAG Awards, the group that represents actors in the film and television industries also votes on performances for TV shows.

In the TV arena, many of the nominees include favourites from past seasons. The best ensemble cast in a drama nominees were the performers in "Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad," "Dexter," "The Good Wife" and one newcomer, "Game of Thrones."

Nominees for best performance in a TV comedy were "30 Rock," "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," "Modern Family," and "The Office."

The SAG Awards will be given out in Los Angeles on January 29, and televised on cable TV networks TNT and TBS. – Reuters

NEW YORK, Dec 14 – Steven Spielberg announced in New York a sequel to his 3D movie version of the comic book hero Tintin.

He told a press conference recently that "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson would direct the new film and that he had already chosen the book by the Belgian author Herge that would serve as the basis for the script.

Spielberg was promoting the US premiere on December 21 of his "Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn," which already premiered in Brussels in October and has been on European, Middle Eastern and Indian release.

In the sequel, the comic books' bumbling Thompson detective twins "have a much bigger role," Spielberg said.

This time, Spielberg will produce and Jackson will direct, swapping their roles in "Unicorn."

"It's being written right now and he's directing it after he does 'The Hobbit' and I'll produce it with him as he's produced this with me," Spielberg said.

"We have the story and we have the book we're adapting from Herge and we can't wait to get started." – AFP

NEW YORK, Dec 14 — The contract that established Apple as a corporate entity in 1976 sold at auction yesterday for US$1.59 million (RM5 million), 10 times its estimated price, two months after the death of high-profile co-founder Steve Jobs.

The contract, sold with another document that removed one of the company's initial three partners after just 11 days, was the subject of fierce bidding by six people taking part in the auction over the telephone and online, Sotheby's said.

Eduardo Cisneros, chief executive officer of Cisneros Corporation, bought the documents, which had only been expected to fetch up to US$150,000 at Sotheby's auction of books and manuscripts in New York.

The contract established the Apple Computer Company and states that Jobs and Steve Wozniak would each be given 45 per cent of Apple's shares. Ronald Wayne, who drafted the contract, was given 10 per cent.

But within days, Wayne had decided not be become involved with the fledgling technology company. Wayne was paid US$800, and later another US$1,500, and was released from the contract. His 10 per cent share would today be worth US$2 billion.

Wayne sold the documents to a private collector in 1994.

Jobs left Apple in 1984 following a power struggle with the company's board of directors but returned to the company in 1996. He would become the central figure in transforming Apple into one of the world's largest and most envied companies.

Heir-apparent’s hair apparent in North Korea capital

SEOUL, Dec 14 — North Korean heir-apparent Kim Jong-un's slicked-back, high-sided haircut is a fashion hit in Pyongyang, where young men are apparently queuing up for a similar cut.

Kim, believed to be in his late 20s and known as the "Young General", is packaged to look like his late grandfather, the secretive state's founder, Kim Il-sung.

The chubby youngest son of the current leader, Kim Jong-il, slicks his hair back at the top, and has it trimmed to the scalp to about an inch above the ears.

Completing the Kim Il-sung look, which experts say is designed to help win over the public's support for dynastic succession, the young Kim wears dark Mao-style suits.

The young Kim's haircut is dubbed a "youth" or "ambition" hairstyle in North Korea, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported.

Earlier this week, North Korean state news agency KCNA quoted barber An Su-gil as saying the short-cut, medium-cut and square-cut hairstyles are now popular among young men.

North Korean newspaper Rodong Sinmun wrote in September that neat and short hair for young people made them "captivating".

"A young man with (an) ambitious high-sided haircut looks so sobering and stylish," the paper added.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said North Korean young men prefer short hairstyle for sanitary reasons, not just because they want to look neat and ambitious.

Kim Jong-un emerged as the reclusive North's leader-in-waiting last year when he was named a four-star general and given a prominent post within the ruling party.

This year he has regularly been photographed alongside his father during visits by foreign officials. — Reuters

Founder of Paris’s famed Shakespeare and Co bookshop dies

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 06:59 AM PST

Shakespeare and Company was known to generations in Paris as a haunt of aspiring writers. — blogparisinsights.com pic

PARIS, Dec 14 — George Whitman, the founder of the Shakespeare and Company bookshop in Paris — a famed writers' refuge and English-language literary hub in the French capital — died today aged 98, the shop said.

"George Whitman died peacefully at home in the apartment above his bookshop," the shop said on its Facebook page.

"George suffered a stroke two months ago, but showed incredible strength and determination up to the end, continuing to read every day in the company of his daughter, Sylvia, his friends and his cat and dog," it said.

Across the Seine from the Notre Dame Cathedral in the famously literary Latin Quarter, Shakespeare and Company was known to generations in Paris as a haunt of aspiring writers.

Visiting authors and students would work in the shop, sleep in the stacks and soak up Paris's literary atmosphere.

Whitman founded the shop as Le Mistral in 1951, later renaming it after the previous Shakespeare and Company owned by Sylvia Beach, which in the 1920s was a gathering place for writers including Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce.

"After a life entirely dedicated to books, authors and readers, George will be sorely missed by all his loved ones and by bibliophiles around the world who have read, written and stayed in his bookshop for over 60 years," the shop said.

"George will be remembered for his free spirit, his eccentricity and his generosity — all three summarised in the Yeats verses written on the walls of his open, much-visited library: 'Be not inhospitable to strangers / Lest they be angels in disguise'," the shop said.

Born on December 12, 1913, Whitman, who claimed to be a grand-nephew of American poet Walt Whitman, was raised in Salem, Massachusetts, according to his biography on the shop's website.

After graduating with a degree in journalism from Boston University in 1935, he set off on a 5,000-kilometre journey through Central America, much of it on foot, that instilled in him a passion for travel.

He was called to military service in 1941 and served as a medic during World War II at military hospitals throughout Europe.

After the war he briefly ran a small bookstore in Massachusetts but eventually moved permanently to Paris under the US GI Bill, which provided assistance to returning veterans.

He studied French literature at the Sorbonne and in 1951 founded the bookshop at 37 rue de la Bucherie on the Left Bank.

In the late 1950s the shop became a hub for the Beat generation of writers living in Paris, including Alan Ginsberg, William Burroughs and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who was a lifelong friend of Whitman.

Over the following decades, Shakespeare and Company played host to generations of young writers who flocked to Paris for literary inspiration and were invited by Whitman to stay in beds he had set up amongst the stacks.

In recent years it remained much as it had been for decades — a cluttered labyrinth of bookshelves and alcoves spread over two floors of a twisting 16th-century building.

Whitman's daughter Sylvia, born at the nearby Hotel Dieu hospital in 1981 and named after Beach, took over running the store about a decade ago.

She oversaw its expansion into other ventures, including publishing a magazine and founding a literary prize for aspiring writers.

In 2006 Whitman was made an officer in France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, which recognises significant contributions to the arts. — AFP/Relaxnews

Of double speak and broken promises

Posted: 13 Dec 2011 04:55 PM PST

DEC 14 — I consider a leader only as good as the promises he keeps. And by far, our current prime minister is not up to that gold standard. If anything, the current actions show that he is perhaps flip flopping in order to survive an election.

The first salvo came with the arrests of 13 suspected Islamists in Tawau under the Internal Security Act. This law is to be repealed and replaced with two new acts of law to counter terrorism, according to Datuk Seri Najib Razak's speech on Malaysia Day this year.

In fact, it was also pledged that everyone would have their day in court and even that the new acts would not allow arrests based on political differences.

Insofar as viewing and reading the news about these 13 individuals, they have yet to receive any form of legal representation nor has there been any explanation about what these Islamists were going to do.

For all we know, it could have been another hostage takeover and kidnapping in Sipadan. As someone who personally wants the ISA amended, I am affronted by the simple fact that this action was contrary to what I was expecting from the Royal Malaysian Police.

I would have thought that since this law would be repealed soon, a moratorium against its use should be implemented while waiting for the two new Bills to be read in Parliament and voted into law.

Guess that did not appeal to the police or the home minister.

The second instance of an empty promise came when our prime minister decided that it was time to also let the public voice out their opinions in the form of protests and gatherings, which, as Najib put it, "were in line with global standards."

If this were the case, then I suggest we look at two nations: Egypt and the United States of America. Both are countries where there are protests taking place nationwide.

While Egypt is seeing people killed and wounded, never is there a mention of a law that imposes an RM20,000 fine on persons taking part.

As for the US and the ongoing "Occupy" movement, again, there is never a mention of the government having the ability to fine the protesters RM20,000 each. In fact, the only mention of monetary losses being brought to court comes from the private sector industries who claim to have lost revenue due to the protests.

And I don't even see those having a chance in court. In fact, the recent act of the police pepper spraying protesters has caused these officers to be placed on mandatory leave since it was considered "police brutality."

I personally do not see street protests as being necessary had the government and their agencies not ignored the signs leading to massive protests like Bersih, GMI or even the anti-PPSMI rallies. The truth is, our government and those linked to it were too slow.

There was too much red tape, too much misinformation and, by far, too many efforts by the government and the authorities to pressure the public into bending to their will instead of negotiating a middle ground. And even when they wanted to negotiate a middle ground, it was the government's actions of disreputable double speak that got them into trouble.

And now, case in point, Prime Minister Najib will once again have to face the pressure cooker prepared for him by his cousin, current Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein. This was the same thing that happened time after time — during the cow head protest in my home town of Shah Alam, during Bersih 2.0 and, now, with these ISA arrests in Sabah.

With all that in mind, I think it is time our prime minister considers this: Is your cousin truly helping you, or just screwing things up too close to an election?

I am personally asking the prime minister to perhaps consider looking for a replacement for the home minister's post, because with the current pledges and actions taking place in that ministry, it truly looks far too much like it is headless.

And with the scrutiny now being placed on the authorities with cases of police brutality and even murder, it is perhaps a valid point for him to consider a person who can rein them in.

Anwar janji minyak turun

Posted: 13 Dec 2011 04:30 PM PST

Ikan jadi lauk termahal sekarang. Gantinya ayam atau daging. Ayam dan daging juga naik. Harga ayam bulan depan dijangka tak sama dengan harga sekarang.

Semuanya berpunca dari kenaikan harga minyak. Naik saja minyak, pasti semua barang naik.

Apabila minyak diturunkan, kos pengangkutan kurang maka kuranglah harga barang. Kemudian diikuti dengan kekangan rasuah. Lagi harga boleh distabilkan. Lepas itu ada pula gaji minima. Ringanlah beban rakyat.

Mahkamah: Utusan salah fitnah Guan Eng, diarah bayar RM200,000

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 02:08 AM PST

Posted: 14 Dec 2011 01:35 AM PST

Pekeliling SBPA dikeluarkan Rabu lalu.
