Hoey holds off McIlroy to clinch Dunhill title

Posted: 02 Oct 2011 03:24 PM PDT

ST ANDREWS, Scotland, Oct 3 — Northern Irishman Michael Hoey held off compatriot and world No. 3 Rory McIlroy to claim the Dunhill Links Championship title yesterday.

Three birdies in the last four holes at the home of golf for a closing 68 and a 22-under-par total of 266 earned Hoey a two-shot victory over the US Open champion, with Graeme McDowell completing a Northern Irish one two three.

"I knew I had to hit the three best shots of my career over the last three holes and I did," a delighted Hoey told reporters.

Hoey needed a battling comeback as McIlroy turned on the sort of display that won him the US Open at Congressional in June, producing a spectacular final round 65.

McIlroy began the day five strokes adrift of Hoey but his first nine holes to six-under 30, including an eagle-two with a 90-yard pitch-in on the third, took him past the overnight leader.

Hoey trailed McIlroy right up to the 15th, due to missed birdie putts of four and three feet on the 11th and 14th, but the lesser-known Ulsterman refused to bow.

When 2001 British Amateur champion Hoey speared in a stunning approach to less than a foot on the 16th, he moved back to the top of the leaderboard, and a birdie on the last extended his victory margin.

It was by far Hoey's best success of three European Tour titles, worth US$800,000 (RM2.6 million), as the 32-year-old at last realised his potential after many years in the doldrums, including six visits to qualifying school.

"There have been points when I have asked myself do I want to continue because it's not nice when you're running out of money," Hoey said. "This has now opened doors to tournaments like world golf championships, events I'd only watched on TV."

McIlroy has described Hoey as a player with "supreme talent" and recognised his worth in the final round.

"I didn't quite get the job done but Michael played fantastic golf and showed just what he's capable of," he said.

"It's nice to be second (to) continue my good run, and it gives me a few more world ranking points to get me a little close to Luke (Donald). But at the end of the day I want to win."

McDowell, last year's US Open champion, closed with a 69 to finish four strokes behind Hoey alongside Scot George Murray. It was the first time Northern Ireland has enjoyed a one two three finish on the European Tour.

World No. 1 Donald (70) ensured McIlroy would not close the gap on him too much in Europe's money list or the world rankings by finishing tied ninth. — Reuters

Reality bites for Wenger as Arsenal slump

Posted: 02 Oct 2011 03:11 PM PDT

LONDON, Oct 3 — Just seven games into the Premier League season, Arsene Wenger all but conceded an end to Arsenal's title challenge after a 2-1 defeat at north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

Unbearable for Wenger on the sidelines. — Reuters pic

A fourth defeat was compounded by a serious injury to France right back Bacary Sagna, and Wenger was in a gloomy mood when asked about Arsenal's chances of competing at the top.

"At the moment we have to set ourselves a realistic target to get in touch with those teams who are fighting to stay in the Champions League," Wenger told reporters.

"To say we will win the league is not realistic. We are 12 points behind Manchester United and Manchester City so it is not realistic today to say that we will win the league.

"We have to fight to come back into a much better position."

Sagna fell awkwardly under challenge from Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the second half and after leaving the field on a stretcher he was diagnosed with a fractured fibula, according to the French Football Federation.

"The France team doctor, Fabrice Bryand, was informed by his Arsenal colleague of an unstable fracture to Bacary Sagna's right fibula," the FFF statement said.

Since Wenger took charge of Arsenal in 1996 they have never finished outside the top four and are virtual fixtures in the Champions League. But their worst start to a season under the Frenchman has now put their place among the elite in jeopardy.

Wenger was even asked whether he thought Arsenal, only two points above the bottom three, were in danger of a relegation battle.

"No," was his emphatic reply, although with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri gone and Jack Wilshere ruled out until after Christmas with an ankle injury, these are clearly worrying times at The Emirates.

The mood was not improved by the sight of Sagna leaving the ground on crutches, although Wenger saw some encouraging signs against Tottenham, who won a fourth consecutive league match with goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Kyle Walker either side of Aaron Ramsey's equaliser.

"In the first half I felt we played a little but with the handbrake on," Wenger said. "Even playing like that we had four chances. At halftime we came out and had a go at them and got it back to 1-1.

"I felt again that we didn't push on enough and let them get back into the game. We lack a little bit of confidence at the moment, and we just need to protect a result when we have one."

Wenger, was rattled by questions over his failure to shake hands with Clive Allen, one of Tottenham's coaching staff, and felt Van der Vaart's opening goal should not have been allowed.

"It is frustrating as well because their first goal was handball," Wenger said. "I wonder what the linesmen do in these situations. It is a second yellow card as well because he already had one — for handball, on purpose."

Tottenham have gone from strength to strength since losing their opening two league games to Manchester United and Manchester City and are up to sixth place, three points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United with a game in hand.

"They (Arsenal) got off to a better start in the second half, got the goal, and watching the game you would have thought, 'they are in the ascendency. We could be in trouble'," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said.

"But we upped it. We got better and stronger and we took over. We deserved the win in the second half, I thought we were excellent. We had all the good chances." — Reuters

Feist mines deep for new album ‘Metals’

Posted: 02 Oct 2011 08:39 AM PDT

'Metals,' Feist's fourth studio album, hits the shelves on October 3.

PARIS, Oct 2 – When Apple lifted one of her songs for an iPod ad, Leslie Feist admits she was knocked sideways by success.

For her new album "Metals", the Canadian went searching for silence and a clear horizon, recording in an oceanside barn in California.

Licensed from her 2007 album The Reminder, the track "1234" became a Youtube hit, turning Feist from indie singer to mainstream pop artist almost overnight – even earning her a guest slot on the Sesame Street children's TV show.

But after three years packed with gigs, television appearances, video shoots and non-stop touring, it was time to stop and "take a deep breath", the soft-spoken singer said in an interview in Paris.

"There's no way you can predict something like that happening," Feist, whose breakthrough album went on to pick up six of Canada's Juno Awards and four Grammy nominations, said of her sudden success.

"It kind of created a bit of a fire. I ended up not really understanding what was happening, so that was part of the reason to take a break."

For the following two years, Feist sought out silence.

"I had had so much volume around me for so many years that I found myself really not wanting to listen to music. I really enjoyed the sounds of the trees, the sound of the street, or the sound of dogs barking."

Until last Autumn, when she hunkered down in her garage, and in the space of three months wrote the 12 tracks on "Metals", her fourth studio album which hits the shelves on October 3.

"These songs really are more of an album than anything I have done before," Feist said. "I had taken long enough away that I lost my habits, and I felt very new again musically."

"Metals" sweeps in an arc from melancholy and anger, to light and hope, with Feist's clear, smooth vocals backed at times by strumming folk guitars and bright drums, at others by heavy punk rock chords.

Bittersweet lyrics speak of the way "a good man, a good woman can't find the good in each other", of a struggle that "held me down tight, took all my fight" – of a "cycle of devastation and recovery" in the singer's own words.

"All we need is a horizon line" to "get some clarity, follow the signs", she sings on "The Circle Meets the Line" half way through the album, one of several tracks in which nature, cliffs and the open sky are a vivid presence.

Once the songwriting was done, Feist called in fellow Canadian musicians Mocky and Gonzales to work on the arrangements, and then went looking for a place to record.

Based on what the songs were about, "and they had a sort of elemental basis," she says "you squint at a map in your mind and you picture – where does it make sense to go find these?"

The place, it turned out, was a barn in Big Sur, a natural enclave on the Californian coast beloved of artists from John Steinbeck – who set several works there – to Joan Baez.

"It's incredibly unlikely we would find a place that perfect," Feist said. "It's just a giant wooden empty space with light pouring in and two wood stoves at either end to keep it warm."

"You can see the ocean, between two hills, and every night that's exactly where the sun would set. And the whole thing was built kind of, at keeping in mind the elements."

For a title, Feist wanted a concept that could "blanket" the album.

"Metal has been a major building block of every civilisation," she said, whether turned into weapons, tools or jewellery, technology or scaffolding.

"Metal is such a changeable substance. It doesn't exist at the surface of the earth. So it's a crazy amount of effort and ingenuity and imagination to find it and turn it into something else."

"I felt like it had enough movement in it, that it can change depending on what each song wanted from it," she said. "Each song became a little stronger once I'd found the title."

After years spent performing the same hits, Feist said she aimed this time around for a kind of universality in her lyrics, for "songs that I can bring with me when I'm 80."

"I tried to plant the possibility for it to adapt with me," she said. "I tried to be really responsible for the fact I know I'm going to be singing these songs for the rest of my life." – AFP

MEF: Tak wajar MTUC piket esok, beri NLAC peluang

Posted: 02 Oct 2011 03:03 AM PDT

Hudud: Muhyiddin mahu DAP, PKR perjelas pendirian

Posted: 02 Oct 2011 02:33 AM PDT

Farewell to fags?

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 04:31 PM PDT

OCT 2 — It sounds too good to be true but Hong Kong could be on its way to becoming the developed world's first smoke-free city.

The findings from a survey by the Census and Statistics Department inform us that only 11.1 per cent of people aged 15 and above smoke in Hong Kong — a record low in 30 years.

Now, if you ask me, most of these 11 or so per cent must congregate at the ashtray bin in front of Times Square in Causeway Bay. It seems every time I make my way from the shopping centre to the taxi stand, there is a fug of smoke engulfing the area.

One curious blip about this survey is that Hong Kong health officials define smokers as those who smoke at least one stick a day. Therefore those who smoke occasionally do not figure in the statistics.

I am not a strong opponent of smoking. I sympathise with smokers who seem to be pushed out of every comfortable area there is (see list below). No more lighting up in pubs (though this is still not strictly observed), in public parks or bus terminals.

In many developed countries, and in Malaysia too, it is natural — commonsense I should say — to not light up in indoor venues like restaurants, shopping malls and cinemas.

But on a recent holiday to Hainan Island, it was as if I had stepped into one big smoking room. Whether in a fancy restaurant or riding in a taxi, the cigarette was still king. During dinner one night, I spotted a father seated at the next table blowing smoke into his toddler's face.

I liked the smell of cigarette smoke as this was what I grew up with. My dad used to be a heavy smoker and even though he quit maybe 20 years ago the smell of Benson and Hedges still brings back memories.

Something changed though when I was pregnant with my son. That was the one smell that repelled.

I only realised this when a cousin came to stay with us and although he was kind enough to smoke outside the house and usually when I wasn't home, the smell that clung to his clothes and breath made me want to throw up.

That was four years ago and I still hold my breath automatically when I see someone smoking.

Like moths to a flame, the ashtray bin is the place to be seen.

Since moving to Hong Kong – and I blame this squarely on the pollution here – an inhaler has taken up residence in my bag. Cigarette smoke, fumes from buses and dust can trigger off an attack. So now, I am looking forward – albeit with suspicion about the validity of the claim – to this being a smoke-free city.

The main reason behind the declining number of smokers here is the steep tobacco tax which was increased by 41.56 per cent earlier this year bringing the current tax to 70 per cent. A pack of cigarettes now costs HK$50 (RM19).

Asking visiting friends and relatives to buy cheaper ciggies at duty free shops in Malaysia won't work anymore as each passenger is only exempted 19 sticks or one shy of a pack.

The survey showed that female smokers are exceptionally low as is the case in most Asian countries – again, I seem to run into many women puffing on the streets of Ap Lei Chau – at only three per cent of the population compared to 19.9 per cent of males.

Interestingly, there has been a slight increase of 0.3 per cent in female smokers over the past decade whereas the percentage of male smokers has decreased by 8.6 per cent

Those who have stayed their ground tended to be in the above 60 age group who are unlikely to change their lifelong habit.

The success of taxation is said to be clearly shown especially in the 15-29 age group who are most sensitive towards price rises.

The good news is that the younger generation of smokers appears to be shrinking. Besides hitting where it hurts most, other measures seem to have reached home. These include smoking cessation clinics run by the Department of Health, hospitals and the Hospital Authority, a quit smoking hotline and a smartphone app.

The quit smoking hotline received 14,787 calls as of August compared to 13,880 in 2010.

The free smartphone app which includes tailor-made quitting tips, a tool to keep track of your progress and encouraging messages from 44 celebrities. It is currently only available in Chinese.

Sitting right up there with the goal of creating the most spectacular fireworks display ever for National Day on October 1 is achieving the target of achieving a smoke-free status — when five per cent or less of the population smoke.

Until then, here's to my neighbour who enjoys a smoke-infused dump every day at 11pm: please shut your window.

Krisis JMB: ‘Lupakan sengketa lama, ayuh bergerak ke hadapan’

Posted: 01 Oct 2011 04:19 PM PDT
