Evans set to become first Australian to win Tour de France

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 08:41 AM PDT

GRENOBLE (France), July 23 — Cadel Evans was set to become the first Australian to win the Tour de France after leapfrogging the Schleck brothers in a final time trial won by Germany's Tony Martin today.

The BMC rider, who finished second in the Tour in 2007 and 2008, started the 42.5km trial around Grenoble with a 57-second deficit to overall leader Andy Schleck of Luxembourg and four seconds behind Frank Schleck.

Evans, 34, took second place in the penultimate stage — seven seconds adrift of Martin, who clocked a best time of 55 minutes 33 seconds.

Evans now leads Andy Schleck by 1:34 going into tomorrow's final parade to the Champs Elysees in Paris, with Frank Schleck in third place overall and 2:30 off the pace, according to provisional results.

It will be the first time that two brothers finish together on the Tour de France podium.

Three-times champion Alberto Contador of Spain finished the time trial with the third best time, 1:09 off the pace, and will finish fifth overall.

Evans, who finally started to live up to expectations in 2009 when he won the world championship, got off to a strong start.

At the first intermediate time check after 15km, the tide had already turned as Evans had shaved 36 seconds off Schleck's advantage.

The Australian, who won the Tirreno-Adriatico race and the Tour de Romandie this year, took the virtual lead after some 20km and there was no looking back.

Russia and China dominate at halfway stage of swim championships

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 08:04 AM PDT

SHANGHAI, July 23 — Hosts China and Russia, with Natalia Ishchenko taking six gold medals, dominated the first half of the world swimming championships while controversy lurked in the open water.

Russia, roared on by the crowd whose support was only marginally more vociferous for the home nation, totally outclassed the rest of the teams in the synchronised swimming, winning all seven titles on offer.

Ishchenko has now won 16 gold medals at the world championships. Only American swimmer Michael Phelps has won more world championship golds — the Baltimore native has won 22 and begins his campaign to add to that total tomorrow in the men's 4x100 freestyle relay.

Not to be outshone, the Chinese diving machine did exactly the same in the outdoor pool just a short stroll from the main indoor venue, claiming all nine titles that had been determined by today, with only the men's 10-metres platform final to come tomorrow.

The hosts, who were watched by retired NBA player Yao Ming today, are heavy favourites to emulate the Russians and complete the sweep with Qiu Bo topping qualifying for the platform final by almost 80 points.

Britain's Tom Daley, the champion from Rome in 2009, also qualified but was more than 110 points behind Qiu in sixth place.

The only other discipline in which medals were decided in the first half of the championships was the open water, held at Jinshan City Beach held about 90 minutes south of Shanghai.

Concerns about the water temperature had been raised throughout the week and were brought to a head today when US officials advised their swimmers not to participate in the 25km race after they measured it at 30.4° Celsius just 30 minutes before the competition was due to start at 0600 local time.

Fina guidelines set a maximum water temperature of 31° degrees, though the German team took a reading during the race and discovered it was in excess of 32°.

Bulgaria's Petar Stoychev and Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil won the controversial men's and women's races, which were blighted by the withdrawals of several competitors before and during the events.

The world governing body, however, dismissed the complaints from some of the teams, saying they had followed their protocols and new temperature limits based on a scientific study still being completed would be in place for next year.

"Personally, from the information we have, the 25km races are successful," Fina executive director Cornel Marculescu said.

"In general, 25 swimmers pulled out. All the swimmers, we have the boat to them. They were helped into the boats in order to intervene when necessary."

Earlier in the week, Britain's Keri-Anne Payne and Greece's Spyros Gianniotis won the women's and men's 10km races, which also doubled as Olympics qualifiers with the top-10 finishers all earning slots at the 2012 London Games.

Fina had also conducted 115 doping tests, "seven or eight" of which had included blood tests, by the end of the first eight days, with no positive tests, Andrew Pipe, the chairman of the Doping Review Control Board said.

The main focus of action will now switch to the pool with everyone beginning their preparations for the 2012 Olympics, while all eyes will be on Phelps, who has already said next year's London Games will be his last.

"We both talked about this meet being the first step to our preparation for the London Olympic games," his coach Bob Bowman told reporters at a packed media conference on Saturday.

"What we do here will set the table of what we're going to work on and how we're going to go about working it for London." — Reuters

Herbie Hancock to promote jazz as UN ambassador

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 05:29 AM PDT

PARIS, July 23 — Jazz musician Herbie Hancock was appointed a Unesco goodwill ambassador, pledging to use music to cross cultural boundaries and promote literacy and creativity among youth around the world.

The pianist and composer, who has won 14 Grammy awards and seen many of his songs become standards during a career spanning five decades, threw his support behind a Unesco project to declare an international jazz day on April 30 each year.

"The idea is to have performances, but not just performances, to have discussions, to have dances to have perhaps even some fun games to do with the history of jazz that young people might be interested in," Hancock (picture) said in an interview before his appointment at a ceremony at Unesco headquarters late yesterday.

The 71-year-old musician, who shot to fame in the 1960s playing with trumpeter Miles Davis, also hopes to use his celebrity to win inclusion for jazz on the list of intangible world cultural heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

The list aims to promote respect for cultural heritage and increase mutual respect for communities worldwide.

Hancock said he would lobby US officials, including Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, for Washington to recognise the Unesco convention on intangible cultural heritage.

Hancock, who was acclaimed as a child prodigy after he started playing piano in 1947, believes that music can bring a wider educational message to many young people, particularly in developing countries.

"One idea that is interesting to me is jazz as a metaphor for targeting literacy. With jazz, you don't just pick up an instrument and start improvising: it's about discipline. Freedom with discipline is the ethos of jazz," he said.

A devout Buddhist, Hancock's latest musical venture, the Grammy-winning "Imagine Project", featured musicians from around the world and he says he is considering another similar album.

"The theme of that record was about a path to peace through global collaboration," he said, saying the interaction of musicians from different cultures had fired his creativity. "I was amazed at what they brought from their cultures, and I think they were surprised by what I brought from mine."

With a tough schedule of live performance and commitments to other educational projects, such as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz — an international institution which he chairs devoted to the development of music education worldwide — the one thing not on Hancock's agenda is retirement.

"For me there is no limit to what the possibilities are, and so I feel no need to even entertain the idea of retiring," said the composer of hits such as "Watermelon Man", "Chameleon" and "Cantaloupe Island". "There is so much that I haven't done. There are an infinite number of ways of looking at things." — Reuters

Harry Potter films cross US$7b box-office mark

LONDON, July 23 — The eight Harry Potter movies have earned more than US$7 billion (RM21 billion) at the box office, Warner Bros said, cementing their place as the biggest grossing series ever.

Although the total does not take into account inflation, and attendance figures have generally declined throughout the series according to some analyses, the franchise has been a major success for the Hollywood studio.

Dan Fellman, Warner Bros Pictures president of Domestic Distribution, called the tally a "stunning achievement."

Warner made all eight of the Harry Potter movies which are closely based on the seven novels by British author J.K. Rowling.

The studio decided to split the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," into two movies, the second of which hit theatres on July 15. It is the first of the boy wizard stories to be available in 3-D.

The end of the franchise raises questions about what might take its place at Warner and in Hollywood generally, although a senior Warner executive has said the studio would rely partly on its DC Comics unit to fill the void.

Fellman said in a statement that Warner had also reached the US$1 billion box-office mark in North America for the 11th straight year.

Warner Bros gave the following global box office grosses for the Harry Potter movies:

• "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorcerer's) Stone" (2001) — US$974,755,371

• "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002) — US$878,979,634

• "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (2004) — US$796,688,549

• "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005) — US$896,911,078

• "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" (2007) — US$939,885,929

• "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (2009) — US$934,416,487

• "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1" (2010) — US$955,417,476

• "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2" (2011) — US$640,200,000 (after first week of release). — Reuters

Versace backs campaign against sandblasting jeans

MILAN, July 23 – Versace voiced its support on Thursday for a campaign to stop the sandblasting of jeans – a practice used mainly in the developing world and widely condemned as dangerous for workers' health.

The Italian fashion giant said that none of its suppliers were using the controversial technique and that it had now joined an international campaign "to encourage the elimination of sandblasting as an industry practice."

Sandblasting is used to give jeans a fashionable faded look.

The Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) – a coalition of non-governmental organisations and trade unions aimed at improving work conditions in the textile industry – had previously called on Versace to end sandblasting.

"After an intensive campaign... the Italian textile brand Versace has just announced that it will join other denim manufacturers around the globe in calling for a ban on the practice of sandblasting," the CCC said.

"After many months of silence, Versace now say they agree that the sandblasting operators who make the finishings on the jeans run unacceptable health risks. Previously they had refused to join the call," it added.

The CCC, which launched last year, said sandblasting operators worked for leading brands in countries including Bangladesh, China, Egypt and Mexico.

But the operators contract an acute form of silicosis, which has killed many of them.

Leading brands including Benetton, Burberry, Carrera Jeans, Gucci, Levi-Strauss, Pepe Jeans and Replay have already joined the campaign. – AFP

Reds ready to challenge again?

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 05:23 PM PDT

JULY 23 — Having been afforded a brief close-up glimpse of their heroes during last weekend's pre-season fixture in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Liverpool fans will now be wondering whether the world's most popular football team (sorry, Man United and Barcelona fans: that honour still goes to Liverpool) can mount a serious challenge for the English Premier League title in the coming season.

The signs are encouraging, with the return of living legend Kenny Dalglish as manager sparking a notable improvement in form and a subsequent burst of confidence unlike anything witnessed at Anfield for many years.

After Dalglish was appointed manager in January, the Reds gained a total of 33 points from their remaining 18 league games — just less than half a season.

To put that into context: In the same number of fixtures, champions Manchester United and second-placed Chelsea both collected 36 points, while third-placed Manchester City also gathered 33.

If the Reds had maintained that sort of form over the course of the entire campaign, then, they would have been serious challengers for the title.

But there's a big jump from playing well for four months in a low-pressure situation to gaining the requisite consistency and mental durability under pressure to challenge for major honours. The real test for Dalglish and his team will come if they make a good start to the season and find themselves in the title frame when 2011 ticks into 2012.

Dalglish has recognised that his squad needs improving and has largely concentrated on bolstering his midfield during the off-season, adding Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and Charlie Adam from Blackpool in the centre of the pitch, along with Stewart Downing from Aston Villa to play on the left wing.

Twenty-one-year-old Henderson looked a little out of his depth in his solitary England appearance against France in November and his form for Sunderland faded as the season went on. The reported fee of around £16 million (RM77 million) is an awful lot of money for a young player with just 60 starts in the Premier League under his belt, but he's clearly a signing for the long-term and won't be expected to become a regular starter straight away.

Adam is less of a gamble after being captured for a reasonable £7 million from Blackpool. He's clearly a talented ball player with an excellent range of passing and dangerous set-piece delivery, but his physical attributes are questionable and exerting a significant influence for Liverpool is a very different matter than running Blackpool's midfield.

It will also be interesting to see how Dalglish intends to use Adam in tandem with Steven Gerrard because they have a very similar natural position: spraying passes from the centre of midfield, looking to get forward to link up with the front two and wanting to shoot from the edge of the penalty area.

Unless Dalglish intends to use Gerrard on the right wing, it's difficult to envisage how he can accommodate both Adam and Gerrard in the same team.

The signing of Downing is a very good one — even though he didn't come cheap at a reported £20 million. The former Middlesbrough player is a proven Premier League performer, having started more than 150 games over the past five seasons, and can be relied upon to provide a steady stream of quality crosses from the left wing.

One player who will be particularly happy with Downing's arrival is Andy Carroll, whose physical presence and aerial ability were begging for someone of Downing's calibre to put the ball on his head. You have to play to your strengths and, by signing Downing, Liverpool should be able to provide Carroll with the consistent level of service he requires.

And of course, Carroll will be more than ably supported by Luis Suarez, who has further enhanced his ever-growing reputation as one of the world's leading strikers with a series of excellent performances for Uruguay during the ongoing Copa America, including both goals in the semi-final victory over Peru.

Suarez — who, it's worth remembering, is only 24 years old — is a fantastic player and he could, in time, prove to be one of Dalglish's best-ever signings. The development of his partnership with the similarly promising Carroll is an extremely exciting prospect for Liverpool fans, who may soon be able to boast a front pairing as good as anyone else in England.

With Gerrard, Downing, Adam, Raul Meireles and Lucas Leiva in midfield, and Carroll, Suarez and the ever-reliable Dirk Kuyt in attack, Liverpool are starting to assemble the array of weapons which should allow them to become a real force this season.

I believe the title will probably be beyond them — the squad doesn't possess sufficient strength in depth to challenge Manchester United, Manchester City or Chelsea over the course of nine months — but I can certainly see them beating Arsenal and Tottenham into fourth place.

The good times could be returning to Anfield.

Noises from the fringe

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 05:18 PM PDT

JULY 23 — When we entered 2011, the local independent music scene seemed to be quite uncertain. There weren't that many local albums produced in 2010, and 2011 seemed to point to even fewer albums being made because of the nature of the market.

Nowadays everyone seems to be more comfortable releasing singles every few months for the purpose of radio airplay and maintaining a profile in the eyes of the mainstream.

For someone like me who's always on the lookout for exciting new music, this year has turned out to be a surprisingly rewarding one. Of course, there's not much to get my blood pumping when it comes to the Malaysian mainstream music scene. So far, none of the big indie acts like Hujan, Yuna, Bunkface or Meet Uncle Hussein have anything new out yet this year.

But if you listen closely, there's been some really exciting noises being made on the fringes of the Malaysian indie music scene. Earlier this year, Furniture released a solidly rocking second album that surprisingly was in a strong Swedish indie pop direction, albeit peppered with their trademark dream-pop and post-rock moves. Najwa dropped her neo-soul tinged debut album, with recording and production quality that's just pure class.

Local Britpop giants Bittersweet also released their long-awaited second album about two months back and the much requested physical version of the P. Ramlee Indiepretasi tribute album was also released around the same time.

Another indie rock band with a healthy mainstream presence, Pesawat, also just released their debut album last week, after around three years of accumulating countless hit singles on Malaysian radio. So it's not been a bad year at all so far in terms of quality albums.

What's truly gotten me excited so far this year, though, are three relatively new and unknown bands that have been jostling for airtime on my CD player. The first two share a split album called Paraphernalia, and the bands are Partimelovers from Kuala Lumpur and Love/Comes from Kuching.

It's probably too modest a release to be called an album as it's on CD-R, but the 10 songs on it and the professionally printed sleeve, not to mention the pretty agreeable recording quality should more than qualify this to be called an album.

What's special about these two bands are the kind of sounds they're making, as they both explore genres that are very rarely heard in Malaysia. KL boys Partimelovers, while they still need quite a bit of tightening up in their playing, especially in the rhythm section, are already exhibiting quite a remarkable understanding of what makes post-punk, their chosen genre, tick.

Often erroneously thought of as disciples of Joy Division and Interpol, I personally think they lean more towards the twin guitar hook making of Television and maybe even The Feelies, as evidenced by the five songs they contributed to the album, all of which possess the sort of memorably catchy hooks rarely associated with the post-punk genre. A special little band, indeed.

Then you have what's fast becoming a lot of people's new favourite band, Love/Comes. Exhibiting a strikingly sure hand on the magic and power of the genre we all call "shoegaze", Love/Comes is quite simply an awesome band, blessed with song writing skills that should be the envy of a lot of other bands out there. Their five-song contribution to the split album are sparkling examples of why people still love legendary 90s bands like Ride and My Bloody Valentine to this very day.

And now we come to what is, for me, the Malaysian album to beat this year, called Subversion, which is the debut album from a band called The Garrison. Proud members of the local DIY punk scene, which is a scene that's virtually ignored in terms of media coverage, The Garrison has simply made an album so effortlessly great, it's a wonder it's taken the DIY punk scene this long to come up with something with this much crossover potential.

A heroically "1977 punk" sounding album, with a few astoundingly catchy reggae songs thrown in, comparisons with The Clash are inevitable (there are already cries of "The Clash copycats" being thrown at them, presumably from people jealous at how good this band is — Malaysia Boleh, hehe), but what makes The Garrison so appealing is just how good the songs are. If you have any sort of love for punk rock, then falling in love with their album is almost a given.

But even if you have no love for punk rock whatsoever, there are quite a few songs in the album that will win you over anyway, which is why I said before that this is one album with immense potential to cross over even to certain parts of the mainstream.

Now how about that, a DIY punk album with crossover potential? 2011 is turning out to be quite an interesting year indeed.

Kes Teoh: SPRM tubuh pasukan khas siasat tohmahan atas tiga pegawai

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 02:17 AM PDT

Ambiga hadiahkan ‘hero’ Bersih 2.0 ijazah Doktor Kehormat

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 01:45 AM PDT
