DUBAI, Jan 21 — At 26 metres shy of the Empire State Building in New York, the world's tallest hotel is set to open its dining rooms in the city of superlatives, where engineers are continually testing gravity with leviathan man-made constructions.

Beginning next month, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai will be opening the property's nine restaurants and five bars, one of which occupies the top floor.

The Marriott Dubai stands at 355 metres and consists of twin towers each with 77 floors. The first tower opened last November.

Restaurants include Asian-Fusion, Italian, American, German, and continental and steakhouse themes.

The dining scene begs comparison with another major hotel landmark in the city, the Burj Al Arab, where guests are offered a dining experience dubbed "Culinary Flight", a gastronomic itinerary that capitalises on the view 200 metres above sea level and moves between the hotel's multiple dining rooms, including the Al Muntaha.

DUBAI, Jan 21 — British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has hinted of plans to return to Dubai with a new restaurant after pulling out of the city-state more than a year ago.

In an interview with Tabloid!, the leisure and lifestyle section of GulfNews.com, Ramsay said he was looking at two potential locations for his latest Middle Eastern outpost, but otherwise remained tightlipped.

Ramsay has a long history with the United Arab Emirates, having steered the restaurant Verre at the Hilton Dubai Creek hotel for nine years until 2011. It was his first project outside the UK.

His latest project would join existing locations such as The Gordon Ramsay Doha and Opal by Gordon Ramsay, both at the St. Regis Hotel in Doha, Qatar.

Ramsay is just one in a string of Michelin-starred, celebrity chefs who are expanding their empires into the Middle East, including French culinary titans Alain Ducasse and Guy Savoy.

Qatar's Museum of Islamic Art also tapped Ducasse to open the site's first fine-dining restaurant IDAM last year. The menu offers French Mediterranean cuisine with an "Arabic" twist. — AFP/Relaxnews

Donaldson pips Rose and Olesen in desert thriller

Posted: 20 Jan 2013 08:17 AM PST

ABU DHABI, Jan 20 — Jamie Donaldson achieved the biggest victory of his career after edging out fellow Briton Justin Rose and Dane Thorbjorn Olesen on a thrilling final day at the US$2.7 million (RM8.1 million) Abu Dhabi Championship today.

Donaldson squeezed five birdies in a closing four-under-par 68 to finish 14-under on 274, one ahead of overnight leader Rose (71) and Olesen (69).

The Welshman almost let in his title rivals when he bogeyed the last hole after missing from five feet. But neither Rose nor Olesen, playing in the match behind, could birdie the 18th and the spectacular Falcon Trophy belonged to Donaldson.

"I got away with murder at the last hole there but I'm very happy to be holding the trophy," the 37-year-old told reporters at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club after clinching his second European Tour victory on his 268th appearance.

"This has been an awesome week. It was a tough field, a brutal golf course and to be sat here is quite surreal."

Donaldson, who also won the Irish Open last year, birdied the first, ninth, 11th, 14th and 15th before dropping his only shot at the 18th.

He then had to endure a nerve-wracking time in the scorer's hut as he watched Rose and Olesen play the final hole on television.

"I was ready to punch something — I wasn't happy with myself at that point," said Donaldson after collecting a cheque for €336,725 (RM1,342,000).

"The chances were that one of them, if not both, would hole their putts. In my mind I just thought I would have to redeem myself in a playoff."

Donaldson's victory will lift him from 47th in the world rankings into the world's top 30 and earns a slot in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio in August and at the WGC-Champions Tournament in China in October.

"I'll play quite a few events in America this year now I would have thought so let's see how we go in those," he said.

"To win here is crazy. I played the pro-am at the start of the week and I thought this course was just too difficult.

"The wind was difficult at the start of the week and I said during the pro-am that if I could somehow get a top-10 finish this week it would be a miracle," he laughed.

"You never know in this game, you really don't."

Rose picked up four birdies in the final round but was let down by bogeys at the fifth, 11th and 16th.

He tossed his putter high in the air in anguish after seeing a 12-foot birdie putt lip out at the last.

"It was a shame that one didn't go in because I really thought I hit the perfect putt," said Rose.

"It reminded me of the putt at 18 against Phil Mickelson (in the Ryder Cup singles in September). The line was just outside the right edge and that's exactly where I hit it but unfortunately this time the putt wouldn't go in for me.

"Would I swap it? No, I wouldn't," added Rose.

Playing partner Olesen also had to settle for a par at the closing hole after missing from 16 feet.

Portugal's Ricardo Santos (68) finished fourth on 277.

Former European Ryder Cup player David Howell (71) led after a birdie at the 10th. But he collapsed with a bogey four at the 12th and a triple-bogey seven at the next after, remarkably, taking four putts from five feet.

"I played beautifully today," said Howell. "It is a classic case of one bad hole.

"It was a disastrous effort on the green. I missed the first one from 2⅟₂ feet downhill, there was an ounce of nerves on that one and I made a poor stroke, and the pressure then piles on."

The Englishman eventually finished joint sixth on 279. — Reuters

Chelsea hang on to beat Arsenal

LONDON, Jan 20 — Chelsea enjoyed some much-needed home comfort with goals from Juan Mata and Frank Lampard securing a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League today.

Arsenal staged a second-half revival with Theo Walcott halving the deficit at a snowy Stamford Bridge but Chelsea hung on for only their second win in six home league games since Rafa Benitez was hired as interim manager.

Victory lifted third-placed Chelsea to 45 points from 23 games, 10 behind leaders Manchester United whose game at Tottenham Hotspur will go ahead later in north London despite heavy snow putting the fixture in doubt.

Mata scored after six minutes after Cesar Azpilicueta's lofted ball put him through on goal, although Arsenal were seething at the referee's failure to award a free kick their way in the initial stages of the move.

Lampard made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after 16 minutes after Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny escaped a red card for bringing down Ramires in the area.

The midfielder's calm finish was his 195th goal for the club and he is now just seven behind Chelsea's all-time record goalscorer Bobby Tambling.

Walcott's superb finish just before the hour gave Arsenal hope and Chelsea enjoyed a nervy final half hour as the Gunners pressed for an equaliser but the hosts held on.

US Post Office job cuts threaten black middle class

Posted: 20 Jan 2013 06:54 AM PST

Reuters file pic of a US post office worker delivering mail.

CHICAGO, Jan 20 — While delivering mail on Chicago's North Side, Lakesha Dortch-Hardy spoke about how much she loves her job at the US Postal Service, and how much it would hurt if jobs such as hers were to disappear.

"There would be no middle class without these jobs - it would either be rich or poor," said Dortch-Hardy, a tall, energetic 38-year-old, who took long strides as she wheeled her cart along a row of two and three-story brick apartment houses.

The cash-strapped US Postal Service has eliminated 168,000 jobs since 2006, and more cuts could result as it struggles to avoid its own "fiscal cliff." As the United States honours Martin Luther King's civil rights legacy on Monday, many African-American workers may be facing new obstacles to achieving and maintaining a middle-class life style.

African-Americans represent 13.1 per cent of the US population and 11.6 per cent of the labour force, according to a 2012 US Department of Labor report. Nearly one in five African-American workers hold government jobs such as mail clerks, firefighters and teachers, the report said.

"There's a long tradition of the public sector being more friendly, or less hostile, to African-American workers," said Robert Zieger, emeritus professor of history at the University of Florida in Gainesville. "The Post Office is the best example."

African-Americans make up about 20 per cent of US Postal Service workers - and are the majority in some urban centres, representing 75 per cent to 80 per cent of the 5,000 letter carriers in the Chicago area, according to Mack Julion, president of the Chicago branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

But the public sector has cut nearly 600,000 jobs since 2009, due to shrinking government budgets and a range of other issues, according to the Bureau of Labor Relations. The slower recovery for African-Americans in the labor market has, in part, been the result of government layoffs after the end of the recession was declared, according to the DOL report. In December, the black unemployment rate was 14 per cent, roughly double that of whites.

While some other sectors of the economy are seeing recovery, the biggest problems may be just beginning for the Post Office, the nation's second-largest civilian employer after Wal-Mart with about 536,000 career workers.

Postal troubles

The Postal Service has been hurt by a switch to electronic mail from paper communication, as well as onerous retiree payments to the government.

Last week, the Postal Service Board of Governors met to discuss a range of cost-cutting measures to strengthen the service's finances following the loss of a staggering US$15.9 billion (RM47.89 billion) in fiscal year 2012.

The Postal Service, self-funded by postage sales, blames most of the losses on a pre-funding requirement enacted by Congress in 2006 that requires it to make annual payments of nearly US$5.5 billion in health benefits for future retirees.

The U.S. Congress has not been able to agree on legislation to overhaul the agency. The postmaster general has proposed eliminating Saturday mail delivery, closing some facilities and changing its benefit payment obligations, but congressional approval is needed for the more significant measures.

With no action by Congress, the postal service is losing US$25 million a day, by some estimates, and could run out of money by October.

"I'm afraid that Congress is going to fiddle while the Post Office burns," said Philip Rubio, assistant professor of history at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.

A place for jobs

Why are there so many African-Americans in the Post Office?

Because historically it was less prone to racial discrimination than other employers and offered a way out of poverty, says Rubio, a former postal worker and author of the book "There's Always Work at the Post Office: African American Postal Workers and the Fight for Jobs, Justice and Equality."

In 1865, the US Post Office opened to black workers. The jobs were attractive to educated African-Americans who found their skills were not appreciated in the private sector, Rubio said. Former postal workers of note include novelist Richard Wright and actor Sherman Hemsley.

"It became a magnet for African-Americans who gravitated to the one place where they could take the test and they knew once they got in and became career employees, they were set," Rubio said. By World War I, 10 percent of the Postal Service's work force was African-American.

After an executive order by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 banned discrimination in the government and defense industries, there was a sharp rise in postal employment among African-American men and women, Rubio said.

"Public service, particularly for African-Americans, was an opportunity — all you need is a high school diploma," said Julion.

Dortch-Hardy took the Postal Service test after graduating from high school on Chicago's South Side, but there were no openings, and she did not get a job immediately. She moved to Memphis, attended college and worked in a bank. But when the Post Office called — she jumped at the chance for better pay and benefits, and returned to Chicago.

Except for very hot or heavy-snow days, and the time she had to jump over a fence while pregnant to escape a ferocious dog, she has enjoyed her 15 years of service. Without it, she feels she might have to work two or three retail jobs to provide adequately for her four children, the oldest of whom is about to start college.

And while she and her husband, also a postal worker, are not worried about losing their jobs, she says: "I do worry about the people coming in now."

Ripple effects

Julion said that the loss of more Postal Service jobs would be devastating - not only to African-American communities, but all communities who rely on postal jobs and service. For example, the Postal Service is the largest employer of veterans in the nation, after the Department of Defense.

The national average annual salary of career employees who work directly with mail, such as letter carriers, is $53,000 to $55,000, said a Chicago Post Office spokesman.

"These are homeowners — people with mortgages and car notes," Julion said. "They are big players in their community in terms of what resources they bring to the table. They are the ones going to the barber shops, the beauty shops, the Ma and Pa shops in the neighborhoods - if you take those incomes away, it's going to be devastating."

The solution, he said, is not just to get another job - if all that's available is retail posts that cannot support a household.

Even many professional jobs do not pay enough, said Julion, a father of four, who left a job as an addictions counselor to join the Postal Service because it paid better.

Amisha Patel, head of Chicago's Grassroots Collaborative, whose aim is to improve worker conditions, said that the problem of crime in minority urban communities is often blamed on gangs and bad parenting.

But another factor is the availability of work, with job losses leading to foreclosures and ruined neighborhoods, Patel said. "You've seen a steady decimation of good-paying jobs, which are very much linked to the public sector."

Rubio said he hopes that President Barack Obama, who recently announced executive orders on gun control, might consider taking similar executive action to save the Postal Service, rather than waiting on Congress.

It would be a "sad irony" if the Postal Service, a booster of minority prospects since the Civil War, should unravel under the first black President, he said.

"I don't think anything now is unfixable," said Rubio. But if nothing is done, the damage to mail service and postal jobs "would be very hard to undo." — Reuters

Hoping to revive an ancient tongue, Pope tweets in Latin

Posted: 20 Jan 2013 06:51 AM PST

Reuters file pic of Pope Benedict.

ROME, Jan 20 — Pope Benedict tweeted in Latin for the first time on Sunday, taking his mission to revive the Catholic Church's official language to a very 21st-century medium.

"Unitati christifidelium integre studentes quid iubet Dominus? Orare semper, iustitiam factitare, amare probitatem, humiles Secum ambulare," the pontiff wrote.

Baffled? So were many Twitter users. "Benny, nobody understands a word of Latin! #adviceforthepope" read one response on the online messaging service.

The pope's tweet meant: "What does the Lord command to those wholly eager for the unity of those following Christ? To always pray, to continually do justice, to love uprightness, to walk humbly with Him," according to University of Cambridge scholar Tamer Nawar.

The message was shorter and, arguably, more elegant in its original language - one of the reasons why Latin-lovers want to conserve the tongue of ancient Rome, Pope Benedict foremost among them.

The Holy See, where even ATM bank machine transactions are available in Latin, is one of the last bastions of the language that gave rise to Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian.

In November the pope set up a new Vatican department charged with promoting the study and use of the language within the Roman Catholic Church and beyond.

Known for his traditionalist leanings, the 85-year old pontiff has also allowed a partial return of the old-style Latin Mass that was phased out more than four decades ago.

Once the international language of science and learning, Latin has declined in use among priests since the Church began allowing them to hold masses in vernacular languages in the mid 1960s.

To keep the language updated, Vatican produces a dictionary of modern words in the ancient tongue. "Inscriptio cursus electronici" is the vital word "email", while "brevissimae bracae femineae" means hotpants.

With just over 5,000 followers, the pope's Latin-language Twitter account is the smallest of his eight profiles, through which he communicates with more than 2 million followers in languages including Arabic and his native German.

However, Sunday's Tweet was not actually the first instance of Latin used by the Pope on Twitter.

Benedict's Twitter handle 'Pontifex' is a Latin word literally meaning "bridge-builder", an ancient title for high priest once held by the emperors of Rome. — Reuters

Holy cow! Original Batmobile from TV series sells for US$4.2m

PHOENIX, Jan 20 — An Arizona man with a special fondness for caped crusader Batman and his sidekick Robin bought the original Batmobile driven in the iconic television series with a bid of US$4.2 million (RM12.6 million) at an auction yesterday.

Rick Champagne, a Phoenix-area logistics company owner, came away with the black, futuristic two-seater featured in the "Batman" series starring Adam West and Burt Ward from 1966 to 1968, following a flurry of spirited bidding at the auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Shelli Mart in her Batman costume next to the Batmobile.

"I really liked Batman growing up and I came here with the intention of buying the car," Champagne, 56, told Reuters in a brief interview moments after he bought the car. "Sure enough, I was able to buy it. That was a dream come true."

The Barrett-Jackson auction was the first time the car was put up for public sale. In addition to the US$4.2 million bid price, the buyer will have to pay an additional roughly US$420,000 in premiums.

The Batmobile is based on a 1955 Lincoln Futura, a concept car built in Italy by the Ford Motor Co.

In 1965, the concept car was bought for a nominal US$1 by noted customiser George Barris, who had a mere 15 days and US$15,000 to transform the vehicle for the show. He has owned it ever since.

Barris told Reuters he had supplied vehicles for movies and television shows before, but this one had to be markedly different than the others.

"With every pow, bang, wow, wee, I wanted the car to do something just like the actors," said Barris, 87, in an interview before the auction. "The car had to be a star on its own. And it became one."

The car has a V-8 engine and instruments in the steering wheel, plus innovative items such as a push-button transmission.

But generations may remember it best for Bat gadgets added for the series, including a car phone and the ability to deploy such things as oil, smoke and nails to thwart villains — not to mention twin rear parachutes for quick Bat turns.

Barris said the vehicle toured the country after the series and a movie and then was housed in a private showroom in California. He said it was time to part with the popular car and let a new owner have the Bat keys. — Reuters

No stars in ‘Star Wars’ jump into hyperspace

LONDON, Jan 20 – Remember that dazzling moment in the "Star Wars" movies when the Millennium Falcon goes into hyperspace and a kaleidoscope of stars streaks past the ship?

Sadly – like a lot of things in sci-fi movies – that really wouldn't happen, a team of British science students have calculated.

Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia would not see any approaching stars as they accelerate through the galaxy because of the Doppler effect, students at the University of Leicester said.

This is the phenomenon by which the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation shortens or lengthens depending on whether the source is nearing or moving away from the person who is perceiving it.

The classic example of the Doppler effect is the siren of a fire engine or ambulance, whose pitch changes relative to the bystander as it races down the street.

Because the Millennium Falcon is speeding towards the stars, the wavelength of the stellar light would shorten, which means it would move out of the visible part of the energy spectrum and into the X-ray range, the students calculated.

On the other hand, cosmic microwave background radiation—the backwash of radiation from the Big Bang which created the Universe 14 billion years ago—would lengthen in wavelength and suddenly become visible.

To those onboard the Millennium Falcon, this ancient energy would appear as a central disc of brilliant light.

"If the Millennium Falcon existed and really could travel that fast, sunglasses would certainly be advisable," said Riley Connors, 21, who worked with three other final-year Master of Physics students in an offbeat project aimed at stimulating out-of-the-box thinking. – AFP-Relaxnews

Kenyataan rasis Dr M bakal hancurkan BN, kata anak Samy Vellu

Posted: 20 Jan 2013 02:40 AM PST

‘Listen, Listen, Listen to us as well’

Pendek kata, "You don't ask for respect but have to earn it."

Jangan hanya diarahkan untuk "Listen, Listen, Listen" tetapi juga listen, listen, listen to us as well!

Seperti mana Yang Amat Berhormat Perdana Menteri pernah mengatakan bahawa era kerajaan yang mengetahui semuanya sudah berakhir. Tidak wajarkah kita menyahut gesaan PM itu?
