Mercedes dominate final British GP practice

June 29, 2013

Mercedes dominated final practice for the British Grand Prix today, with Nico Rosberg beating Lewis Hamilton to the fastest time at Silverstone.

Rosberg, quickest yesterday too, lapped the circuit with a best lap of one minute 31.487 seconds on a bright and breezy day at the former World War two airfield that hosted the first championship race in 1950.

Hamilton, the 2008 champion and a home favourite, was 0.146 slower after Monaco winner Rosberg snatched the top place on the timesheets in the closing seconds.

Red Bull's triple world champion and championship leader Sebastian Vettel and Australian team mate Mark Webber were third and fourth fastest, but half a second slower than Rosberg, with Lotus's Romain Grosjean fifth.

Vettel leads Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in the drivers' championship by 36 points after seven of 19 races.

McLaren's Jenson Button, the 2009 champion and another local favourite, was only 12th and Mexican team mate Sergio Perez was 18th after a left rear tyre blowout caused the session to be halted for marshals to pick up debris.

Perez also slid off later in a difficult session for his struggling team. – Reuters, June 29, 2013.

Life of India’s Olympic hero Milkha Singh opens July 12

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 09:51 PM PDT

June 29, 2013

India's 'The Flying Sikh', athlete Milkha Singh, gets the silver screen treatment with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, releasing internationally on July 12, 2013.

Milkha Singh, 82, was a world champion in the 400 metres, who infamously lost the penultimate race of his life - the 400m final at the Rome Olympics.

The film explores Milkha Singh's redemption after this tragic outing, and the catharsis that came when he confronted his past.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag winds through the tumultuous India-Pakistan Partition civil war where Milkha's family were killed in violence, resulting in his homelessness, and a life of petty crime before sports entered his vision.

The young Milkha builds his character by enlisting in the Indian Army, and learns some of life's most precious lessons through his teacher.

The film stars India's critically acclaimed actor, producer, singer, writer, director and musician Farhan Akhtar in the lead role.

He is joined by Sonam Kapoor, Aisha, Art Malik, Rebecca Breeds (Home and Away) and is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (director of the Bafta nominated film Rang De Basanti, Delhi-6).

The screenplay is by Prasoon Joshi and the soundtrack is composed by the award-winning trio, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. - By Subhadra Devan, June 29, 2013.

Glee’ cast shakeup: 5 original cast members out

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 06:06 PM PDT

June 29, 2013

Fox's "Glee" is saying goodbye to several fan favorites. Original cast members Dianna Agron, Heather Morris, Mark Salling, Amber Riley and Harry Shum, Jr. won't be returning as series regulars next season, though they may make guest appearances, individuals close to the production confirmed to TheWrap.

A representative for show producers, 20th Century Fox Television, declined to comment.

All five actors started with the musical series back in 2009. On the last season, "Glee" saw some big changes as new students joined and several characters moved on to their lives after McKinley High. The series was partially set in New York City to accommodate new storylines for stars Lea Michele and Chris Colfer.

Quinn (Agron), Puck (Salling), Mercedes (Riley) and Mike (Shum) graduated on Season 3. Heather (Morris) graduated this past season and the undercover brainiac accepted an offer to attend M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass.

In April, Fox granted an early renewal to the Ryan Murphy production for an additional two seasons.

While the series still performs well on the network and reached cult status among viewers very quickly, its viewership has flagged some over its run. At its height during Season 2, "Glee" averaged 10.11 million viewers per episode versus Season 4's 8.26 million. - Reuters, June 29, 2013.

New designer drugs multiplying, testing authorities: UN

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 04:38 AM PDT

June 28, 2013

New drugs marketed as "legal highs" and "designer drugs" are emerging fast and in great numbers, and authorities are struggling to keep up, a new UN report warned Wednesday.

So-called new psychoactive substances (NPS), often sold under harmless names like spice, bath salts or herbal incense, posed a serious health risk although they were legal, the UN office on drugs and crimes (UNODC) said in its annual World Drug Report.

"Sold openly, including via the Internet, NPS, which have not been tested for safety, can be far more dangerous than traditional drugs," it warned.

From 166 known NPS in 2009, the number rose to 251 in 2012, according to the UN body.

These drugs, which could be synthetic or plant-based and could be easily altered to create new ones, were now outpacing efforts to control or ban them, it said.

"The international drug control system is floundering for the first time under the speed and creativity of the phenomenon," the UN deplored.

The perception that the drugs were safe also compounded the problem, it said, adding that the long-term effects were unknown.

In the United States, NPS were the most used drugs among students, after cannabis.

In Europe, NPS use was on the rise, even as cannabis use has gone down and consumption of other drugs has remained steady.

New psychoactive substances were also present in Asia and Africa and with an ever-growing number of drugs to control, national health, customs and police authorities were stretched thin, requiring more international cooperation to detect them, the UNODC appealed.

Worldwide, cannabis was still the most commonly used illegal drug with 3.9 percent of the global population aged 15-64 using it, the report said.

In 60 percent of countries however, prescription drugs like sedatives and tranquilisers were among the top three misused substances, which was "of particular concern," it added.

The market for amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), which include ecstasy and methamphetamine, was also growing, especially in east and southeast Asia, the UNODC found. Ecstasy was on the rise in Europe.

Meanwhile, eastern and western Africa were becoming increasingly important to traffickers.

A new maritime route seemed to have developed from Afghanistan through Iran and Pakistan leading south towards Africa, "a worrying trend" given the lack of trafficking information on that continent, the UNODC said.

"Africa is increasingly becoming vulnerable to the drug trade and organized crime," UNODC chief Yuri Fedotov warned.

With US-led NATO troops due to leave Afghanistan in 2014, Fedotov also urged "concerted efforts" to help curb drug production in the war-torn country. Last year, Afghanistan produced 74 percent of the world's opium, according to the UNODC. - AFP/Relaxnews, June 29, 2013.

Kayveas: Perhimpunan agung PPP serentak pemilihan parti Jun tahun depan

Posted: 29 Jun 2013 01:20 AM PDT

June 29, 2013

- Bernama, 29 Jun, 2013.
