Owned by Chef Nani Yusof Hughie, a former journalist with the Malaysian national news agency Bernama, the restaurant which serves up the popular dishes long identified with Penang's Indian Muslim community, was listed in the guide, a professional rating of quality restaurants in December last year.

The allocation of stars is done annually by Michelin based on anonymous visits by its inspectors.

'One Star' indicates a very good restaurant in its category, offering cuisines prepared to a consistently high standard.

"I am surprised and honoured by the recognition as I am not a professional chef, and that includes my kitchen team. Furthermore, I am very new in this restaurant business, not even a year," she told Bernama via email recently.

The restaurateur, who is also a freelance writer, says the coveted award is meaningful for her and her team who have been working untiringly to ensure that meals are prepared with high standards and maintaining consistency.

"I was cleaning up my office at the restaurant on January 18 when I found a stack of letters on my desk. To my surprise, I found this letter dated December 23 from Michelin," Nani recalls.

Mamak Malaysia serves mixed Indian, Malay and Chinese cuisines, which are popular in Penang, she says, noting that some of her dishes are not served at other Malaysian restaurants in the United States.

Born and raised in Penang, Nani is the creator of Mami Penang Cooking Inc, the registered company that runs Mamak Malaysia, the first fully halal Malaysian restaurant in New York City.

The restaurant is located at 35-20 Farrington Street, Flushing, in the north-central region of the city's borough of Queens.

Since moving permanently to New York in 2005, Nani has built two successful businesses, Mami PG's Cooking and Melayu's Cookies. Mami PG's Cooking, which was set up in 2007, specialises in hometown Penang cuisines.

As a self-taught chef, Nani has become known for her nasi lemak and nasi kandar.

"We are famous for our shrimp nasi kandar, beef nasi kandar, squid nasi kandar, crispy okra and lamb rack with rendang sauce", she said.

Within three months of its launch, the restaurant received rave reviews from various media such as The New York Times, The New York Magazine, Chopsticks and Marrow, Chowhound, among others.

"We also have been featured in Globe Trotter by Jon Haggins - TV segment. Chowhound also has selected us as 'The Best New York Chowhound Find in 2013' on January 5," she says.

Since its opening in May last year, Mamak Malaysia has attracted Royal diners, foreign dignitaries and celebrities, who brought a touch of fame and glamour to the restaurant.

Nani (pic, left) had the honour to serve Brunei's Prince Abdul Mateen Bolkiah and his delegation during their visit to New York City on November 2 last year.

Malaysian ministers, parliament members and celebrities are also among her distinguished diners. Mamak Malaysia also provides catering services to several Asean Permanent Missions to the United Nations (UN) during their National Day and holiday celebrations.

Her clients include NBC (National Broadcasting Corporation) offices, the United Nations, Warner Brothers, Seamless, Tourism Malaysia and various Permanent Missions to the UN from Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore.

Nani, 42, says her entrepreneurial skills were developed since she was a teenager by selling "Mee Rebus Mamak" during her school's canteen day each year.

"During my college year, I started my own street burger business which is still operating until today after more than 20 years. The business is now run by my brother at my hometown," she said.

Nani comes from a mixed marriage background. Her mother, a housewife, is a mix of Punjabi/Bengali and mamak (Indian Muslim) while her father, a teacher, is of Dutch, Thai and Nyonya descent.

Brought up in Indian, Malay and Chinese mixed community in Georgetown, Nani developed an interest in Penang's authentic cuisine since she was 10.

It was romance that brought Nani to the Big Apple. Nani has been married for the last 10 years to a Barbados-born American nutritionist. It was her love for cooking that had been her mainstay during these years in the US.

Initially, she spent time doing regular office jobs besides writing for Bernama and catering food for special events. Nani is the proud mother of two kids, a five-year old boy and three-month old girl.

She says that several well known food blogs, Midtown Lunch, Eating in Translation, and Chubby Chinese Girl Eats have written glowing reviews of Mami's PG Cooking in the past year. Various Malaysian newspapers have also given rave reviews on Nani's cooking.

Given that her business is currently experiencing rapid growth and expansion, Nani says she is working with the Queens Economic Development Corporation to develop her company's own branded products for the US market.

Nani says that running a restaurant is a tough business as it requires a lot of hard work, planning and commitment.

"You need to develop the right attitude, promote the restaurant, keep an eye on the competition and communicate with your customers. And you have to perform all these tasks while you're cooking awesome food and providing top-notch service."

"It is tougher overseas, given the enormous challenges and obstacles that restaurateurs like me have to face. You really have to possess extraordinary strength to operate abroad," she said.

To stay competitive, she has to fully understand the stringent US procedures and laws and keep abreast of the latest developments. Nani regularly uses the social media, such as Facebook and Twitter to promote her restaurant and stay connected with her friends and customers.

Nani, who is humbled by her success, is grateful to Queens Economic Development Corporation for extending assistance since she started her business by providing various programmes, especially for women migrants. – Bernama, February 2, 2014.

Sunderland and West Ham United both climbed away from the Premier League relegation zone after recording potentially important victories today.

League Cup finalists Sunderland enjoyed a 3-0 success at bitter rivals Newcastle United, while West Ham weathered the dismissal of striker Andy Carroll to overcome Swansea City 2-0 at Upton Park.

Carroll created both of West Ham's first-half goals, knocking the ball down for Kevin Nolan to break the deadlock in the 26th minute and then teeing up the same player to head in a second in first-half injury time.

The former Liverpool striker was then sent off in the 58th minute after catching Swansea centre-back Chico Flores with a flailing arm, but West Ham held on for a win that took them out of the bottom three.

Sunderland leapt up to 12th place in the table after prevailing in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park.

Fabio Borini's penalty gave Sunderland the lead in the 19th minute, and Adam Johnson tapped in his seventh goal in seven games four minutes later before Jack Colback sealed victory with a late strike.

With top-four sides Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool not in action, attention later today will focus on the teams seeking to break into the Champions League places from below.

Fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur and sixth-place Everton will both have eyes on the teams above them as they bid to bounce back from mid-week drubbings.

Thrashed 5-1 by City on Wednesday, Spurs can draw level on points with Liverpool if they win at Hull City, while Everton will look to move on from their 4-0 Merseyside derby mauling when they host Aston Villa.

Defending champions Manchester United, meanwhile, could provisionally move to within 10 points of leaders City if they win at Stoke City.

The league's bottom two clubs are also in action, with Fulham hosting Southampton and Cardiff City tackling Norwich City. – AFP, February 1, 2014.

Sienna Miller admits ‘brief encounter’ with Bond star Craig

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 06:27 PM PST

February 01, 2014

British actress Sienna Miller (pic) yesterday admitted she had a fling with James Bond star Daniel Craig as she gave evidence at Britain's phone-hacking trial.

Giving evidence from the United States by video-link, Miller told London's Old Bailey court that she and Craig had been close, but she attacked "titillating" press reports that they had a full-blown affair while she was dating actor Jude Law in 2005.

"It was a very brief encounter," she said, speaking from a book-lined room and flanked by an FBI agent.

Miller was giving evidence at the trial of several former executives at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World tabloid accused of conspiring to intercept voicemail messages.

Murdoch was forced to shut the paper down in 2011 over revelations that it had hacked the messages of a murdered schoolgirl as well as hundreds of celebrities.

The seven people on trial in London deny charges linked to the scandal.

Former News of the World reporter Dan Evans, who has pleaded guilty to phone-hacking, told the trial this week that he intercepted a message left by Miller to Craig and used this as the basis for a story in October 2005 reporting that the pair were having an affair.

Evans told the court the message said: "Hi, it's me. Can't speak. I'm at the Groucho (club) with Jude. I love you."

Miller told the jury yesterday it was "likely" she had left the message.

"Yes, I had always ended my phone calls to Daniel 'I love you' – it was a declaration of friendship," she said.

"Whether or not I was in a relationship with Daniel Craig at the time, it was a very brief encounter. He was my best friend. My saying 'I love you' was nothing new.

"It has been turned into a titillating piece of information. I really regret it was turned into something to be analysed." - AFP, February 1, 2014.

In teen star transition, Bieber may want to emulate Miley

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 04:32 PM PST

February 01, 2014

A role model for troubled teen star Justin Bieber (pic) could be, believe it or not, provocative songstress Miley Cyrus.

Bieber, who racked up charges in two cities in the span of a week, would be wise to use Cyrus as his guide to navigate the transition from teen pop stardom to a serious adult career, branding and celebrity crisis experts said.

Should the 19-year-old Canadian fail to chart a new music-focused course soon, he could go the way of actress Lindsay Lohan and countless other young stars who rose to fame only to have promising careers come unhinged by their personal lives.

"The hardest, hardest transition to make is from teen idol to working performer with an ongoing career," said Howard Bragman, vice chairman of online personal branding website Reputation.com.

"The streets of Hollywood are lined with teen idols who couldn't make the transition," he added. "What's ironic is that the only way to have long-term success is to really focus on your career and not focus on the rest."

In the past week, Bieber has been arrested twice. He faces charges in Miami Beach, Florida, stemming from an alleged street drag race where preliminary tests showed he had marijuana and anti-anxiety medication in his system. Another charge in Toronto accuses Bieber of assaulting a limousine driver.

The first step Bieber could take in his turnaround would be to unplug from social media and his nearly 50 million Twitter followers, said Mark Pasetsky, the head of public relations firm Mark Allen & Co and former editor of OK! magazine.

"He's got to take a step back from the spotlight," he said. "Everything he's doing right now makes him appear to be completely unstable. You're already seeing the impact of his behaviour and what it's doing to his brand. He's eroding his core fan base with this type of behaviour."

A long-term course to get back into good graces with the public – and the parents of his army of teenage fans known as "Beliebers" – is an "evolution" into adulthood, Bragman said, much like Cyrus's transition from Disney idol "Hannah Montana" into an edgy 21-year-old pop star.

Cyrus shed her innocent teen act for a sex-forward persona orchestrated around music videos with her wearing little or no clothes. She also grabbed headlines last year when she "twerked" on singer Robin Thicke during a performance at MTV's Music Video Awards, giving the sexually explicit dance widespread cultural currency.

"The question is how you're going to be doing as a 25-year-old?" Bragman said. "Are you going to be playing the Missouri State Fair or are you going to be having a respectable recording career?"

Bieber's representatives declined to say what professional plans the singer has in coming weeks.

His arrests have added an exclamation mark to a rocky year for the star, who has scuffled with paparazzi in London and been the target of a felony investigation into whether he pelted a neighbor's house with eggs.

Now, the charges from the past week put the baby-faced "Boyfriend" singer at risk of serving jail time.

"The last 500 times we've heard about Justin, it had nothing to do with his music," Bragman said. "Everything we hear about Miley has to do with her music. You may disagree with her execution, but it's hard to argue the strategic wisdom behind it."

That advice was echoed by Pasetsky, who said Bieber's challenge is to get people talking again about his music and his famously fanatic teen fans.

"Cyrus is coming out with breakthrough videos and performances and that's what he needs to be doing," he said.

Cyrus herself had some advice for Bieber during an appearance on NBC's "Tonight Show" on Thursday.

"I would just say, you've got a lot of money, pay people to make sure you don't get in trouble and party at your house," she told host Jay Leno. - Reuters, February 1, 2014.

World Hijab Day, a day of pride for Muslim women around the world

Posted: 01 Feb 2014 06:08 AM PST

BY K. ANAND and HUDA M.
February 01, 2014

It is February 1, and aside from it being the second day of the Lunar New Year, women around the world are celebrating World Hijab Day today.

It is only the second annual celebration, following its launch last year by Nazma Khan, a young New Yorker.

She came up with the idea as a means to foster religious tolerance and understanding by inviting women, both Muslim and non-Muslim, to experience the hijab for one day.

Nazma's other objective was to allay some of the myths and controversies surrounding why Muslim women choose to wear the hijab.

She especially felt the call to bring the message having experienced "being the odd one out" since her school days after her family moved from Bangladesh to the United States, when she was 11-years-old.

Thanks to social media, the message has spread far and wide, and has attracted the interest of women, both Muslim and non-Muslim, in more than 100 countries. There are also more than 50 appointed World Hijab Day ambassadors in over 20 countries.

According to the official website, Malaysia has a total of seven ambassadors.

One of them, Murshidah Said (pic, left) of Selangor, shared the spotlight with the founder Nazma, in a live video interview on Huffington Post today.

Two non-Muslim Malaysians are mentioned in the website, namely Mrs Universe 2013, Carol Lee, who is said to have endorsed the movement and Felixia Yeap, the ex-Playboy bunny and model, who shares her story on wearing the hijab. Yeap was also featured on The Malaysian Insider two months ago. These Malaysian Chinese girls hold up a World Hijab Day banner in a show of support for the Muslim garb at Sunway today. – Pics courtesy of World Hijab Day Malaysia's Facebook page, February 1, 2014.These Malaysian Chinese girls hold up a World Hijab Day banner in a show of support for the Muslim garb at Sunway today. – Pics courtesy of World Hijab Day Malaysia's Facebook page, February 1, 2014.

In Malaysia, the World Hijab Day celebration today saw participants gathering near the Sunway Pyramid Mall in Selangor.

The shadowy world of sex trafficking on US shores

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 08:34 PM PST

February 01, 2014

Shandra Woworuntu, human trafficking survivor and activist, is seen on a camera monitor during an interview with AFP on January 28, 2014 at Humanity United in Washington, DC. - AFP pic, February 1, 2014.Shandra Woworuntu, human trafficking survivor and activist, is seen on a camera monitor during an interview with AFP on January 28, 2014 at Humanity United in Washington, DC. - AFP pic, February 1, 2014."Are you Shandra? Yes, I am."

With those few words, a young Indonesian with big dreams of a better life found herself catapulted into the murky underground world of sex slavery and violence.

But Shandra Woworuntu, then 25, was not trapped in a sordid brothel plying clients in some far-flung Asian tourist hotspot.

Instead the college graduate and young mother was whisked away from New York's busy John F. Kennedy airport with a gun to her head by an organised gang working in the heart of the world's economic superpower.

Nothing had prepared the slight, softly spoken, shy woman to become one of the thousands of men, women and children lured into the hidden world of sex trafficking and forced labour in the United States every year.

After losing her job as a financial analyst in a bank in the chaos unleashed by Asia's economic crisis, Shandra replied to a newspaper ad for temporary work in a hotel in Chicago.

In 2001, having passed a test, and armed with a visa from the US embassy, she left her young daughter, promising to return home soon.

"I was excited – I thought this was the American dream. I will earn some money and I will go back after six months," she told AFP.

But on her very first night on US soil, she was put to work in a New York brothel, before being passed from pimp to pimp – a Malaysian known as Johnnie Wong, a Taiwanese guy, a man who only spoke Cantonese, and even an American.

"They put a gun on my head, and I just think I have to save my life," she said in somewhat broken English, her voice at times dropping to a whisper.

"Maybe I have been kidnapped, I didn't know exactly. What I need to do is life survival."

Many of the girls and women she encountered working in the brothels had also been lured from abroad, some from her native Indonesia. She was the oldest of the group. Most were just teenagers.

One young girl, whose age she guessed at as between 10 to 12, did not speak any language Shandra recognised. "I never knew where she came from," she said sadly.

She was forced to work through the night in casinos and hotels where clients would pick from the girls lined up in front of them or would telephone for services.

"The phone was always ringing," remembered Shandra, who said the women were often denied food, but were presented with tables laden with alcohol and drugs.

Moved many times in vans with tinted glass and held in rooms with shuttered windows, and barred by beefy bodyguards, Shandra lost all notion of time. And she was told that she had to work to repay a $30,000 (RM10,0395) "recruitment fee".

To this day, she can't say how long she endured captivity, knowing only she arrived in spring and it was turning cold that same year when she escaped.

"This is not the job that they promised," she said, without a hint of irony.

An open bathroom window, two floors up, gave her her chance. Persuading one other girl to go with her, they jumped, and miraculously survived unscathed.

After weeks of living rough, with the police, church, and the FBI all refusing to believe her story – and even falling into the hands of another pimp – Shandra, whose passport and all documents had been stripped from her on day one, finally found help with a victim's agency called Safe Horizon.

While her tale might sound incredible, agencies say it is very common.

And it doesn't just concern foreigners – young American runaways all too often put themselves in dangerous situations wooed by tales of modeling careers and lucrative music contracts.

The Alliance To End Slavery and Trafficking estimates about 14,000 to 17,000 men, women and children are smuggled illegally into the US every year to work in the sex trade or in factories, farms and bars as forced labour.

"This is organised crime and they are very organised. And what we see is that they are increasingly more sophisticated in how they are committing this crime," said the alliance's director, Melysa Sperber.

The group is calling for greater government controls on the recruiters who lure vulnerable people to US shores every year.

In its 2013 global Trafficking in Persons report, the State Department recognised that the United States is "a source, transit, and destination country for men, women, and children – both US citizens and foreign nationals – subjected to forced labour, debt bondage, involuntary servitude, and sex trafficking" with victims mainly coming from Mexico, Thailand, the Philippines, Honduras and Indonesia.

While prosecutions by federal agencies were on the rise due to greater awareness of the problem, the report recommended that funding should be increased to agencies providing victim services, and there should be greater oversight on contractors hiring foreign labourers.

Legislation is now pending in the House of Representatives sponsored by congressman Ed Royce seeking to close such loopholes, such as requiring foreign hirers to be registered with the Labor Department.

It would also ensure foreign labor contractors would have to provide the names of the employers and recruiters and a signed contract.

The bill "provides the tools needed to avoid the scams of unscrupulous labour recruiters who force workers into slave labour or sexual slavery once they enter the US," Royce said when he introduced the bill in October.

"The human cost of trafficking is painfully high – we must act."

Although still emotionally scarred by her past, Shandra, who helped law enforcement agents bust at least one of the networks which brutalised her, is now proudly putting her experiences to use to try to fight human trafficking.

"If I don't stand for them who live in the shadows, become a voice of the voiceless... the government, the community will not know that it's happening," she told AFP.

"I hope I can do more to help them identify the victims ... because I believe with my connection, with all of us together, we will fight modern-day slavery." - AFP, February 1, 2014.

– 1 Februari, 2014.

Enticing FA Cup ties to jump start local football season

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 02:53 PM PST

February 01, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

There is plenty to look forward to this weekend, with tantalising matchups in both domestic and international leagues.

But first, let me take a moment to convey my deepest condolences to the family of Wong Choon Wah, a Malaysian football legend, who sadly passed away yesterday morning. His passing is a great loss for the national football fraternity.

Moving on, before I get to the tale about a Norwegian getting a Brazilian, let us look at the Malaysian FA Cup Round of 16, which throws up some interesting fixtures.

Interesting is indeed the word as the state of both the Malaysian Super League and Premier League have been marred by inconsistent performances all around. A lot of huffing and puffing to go, but expect issues to be ironed out after six or seven games.

The biggest clash of this round is Lions XII hosting Pahang.

The Lions have had two great results, a stoppage time bullet header from Khairul Amri that sealed all three points at home to Selangor, before an inspired comeback from two goals down against league favourites Johor Darul Takzim 1.

Into the knockout stage, expect Fandi Ahmad's troops to make life very difficult for Pahang.

The team from the East Coast have proven to be unpredictable but do look out for young Hafiz Kamal in central midfield. A slick passer of the ball who never backs down from a battle (and yes, two qualities that do not go hand in hand), Hafiz's left peg can prove decisive.

Decisive again is the word when we look at the Pablo Aimar-inspired Johor Darul Takzim 1 as they seek early season revenge over T-Team.

The team from Terengganu stunned the Johoreans 1-0 in Kuala Terengganu. So, this presents an early opportunity for manager Cesar Gimenez to readjust tactically and claim a morale-boosting turnaround after that "limpless" performance in their Super League clash.

As for Aimar, it has been money well spent by the Southern Tigers, with him completely dictating play when on the pitch. It is a pity, however, as physical requirements of Southeast Asia are taxing on footballers not used to the climate.

The Northern Derby brings Kedah and Perlis together again and after the 4-1 thrashing at Darul Aman, expect another spanking as Kedah certainly have shown their pedigree.

This Kedah team has a nice mix of young and the experience, Khyril Muhymeen certainly seems like the only local striker of note who starts regularly for his team in the Super League right now.

And last but not least, bad boys Sime Darby will aspire to keep all eleven players on the pitch in an all-Premier League FA Cup clash against Felda United.

To get one player sent off is difficult at any level, but a double send off is suicide. Let's see if cooler heads prevail in what is sure to be a well-drilled match.

Solskjaer gets a Brazilian

Moving a lot further west, to Wales to be more specific, just what was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinking of when he signed fullback Fabio da Silva from Manchester United?

One half of perhaps the most un-Brazilian twins in European football, Fabio has most resembled Wes Brown instead of Daniel Alves, whom he was projected to develop into.

Having been at Manchester United for five years and playing just 56 games in all competitions, Solskjaer will be hoping he can coax the best out of the still young Brazillian (23 years of age).

When the twins arrived in England at the age of eighteen, it seems that they have had the composure on the ball of Brazilians coached out of them, replaced by a rather more traditional view on fullbacks in the United Kingdom.  Now, the twins just kick anything that moves! Hopefully for Solskjaer's sake, this move works out.

A simple "you are Brazilian" reminder every day might do the trick!

Bottom-of-the-table Cardiff City will take on Norwich City tonight (11pm).

At the other end, new table-toppers Manchester City have got a home date with third-place Chelsea on Monday night (4am, Tuesday morning).

My prediction... well, how about this, 0-0 at the Etihad? Jose Mourinho parks the bus and goes home claiming Chelsea were the better team.

Seriously though, the Chelsea manager's only hope is for Manchester City to have a complete off-day. And these things can happen in football.

However, a dominating performance for Manchester City will only help strengthen their title credentials and pulling one over Jose Mourinho would surely please Manuel Pellegrini.

Over at the Serie A this weekend, a Juventus versus Inter Milan clash would have set the pulse racing mere seasons ago, however, watching Inter has been like watching paint dry this season.

If there are a few Manchester United fans who think Sir Alex Ferguson did not leave much behind for David Moyes, consider this, Mourinho left Inter with nought.

Despite winning the UEFA Champions League title, Mourinho has always been best with extracting top performances from senior and experienced players, not a growing team filled with youth potential.

Expect Juventus to seal all three points. Perhaps there will be many Manchester United fans watching too as they ponder how Paul Pogba would have looked alongside Michael Carrick in this current Red Devils squad, and rue the day he was let go. – February 1, 2014.
