Cancellara wins Tour de Suisse time trial again

LUGANO, Switzerland, June 12 — Olympic and world time trial champion Fabian Cancellara enjoyed a third straight victory and fifth career success in the opening time trial of his home Tour de Suisse race yesterday.

The Swiss, favourite to win the opening 7.3-km time trial, completed the technical course nine seconds faster than American Tejay Van Garderen. Slovakia's Peter Sagan was third.

Cancellara, clad in his brilliant white world time trial champion's skin suit, was two seconds slower than Germany's Andreas Kloeden at the summit of the mid-course climb.

But an ultra-fast plunge down to Lugano city centre and faultless cornering in the final kilometres saw the Classics and time trial specialist claim his fourth win of the 2011 season.

"I was more nervous this year before the Tour de Suisse than last year because there were bigger crowds and higher expectations than in 2010," the 30-year-old from Berne told reporters.

"I made a slight mistake too, my fingers slipped early on and I touched the electronic gear change and lost a bit of time.

"Still, that proves I'm still human like everybody else.

"My two big targets are the opening and finishing time trial in the race, and I've managed to take the first one.

"Getting a victory on home soil is always special, too. This was a good day."

Cancellara will wear the leader's jersey on today's second stage, a mountainous 149-km run from Airolo to Crans-Montana but he was not optimistic about his chances of keeping it.

"For sure there will be a change of leader tomorrow because the course is so tough," he said.

"An early break could go with a young climber like Van Garderen in it, and nobody might want to take control.

"Having such a mountainous stage so soon makes it all very unpredictable."

Among the overall favourites, Cancellara's Leopard Trek teammate Andy Schleck of Luxembourg came off worst when a mechanical problem forced him to change bikes early on the course.

The 2009 and 2010 Tour de France runner-up finished 147th, 1 minute and 18 seconds off the pace.

Muggles beware! Pottermania is back

LOS ANGELES, June 12 — Muggles take note. A new and possibly unprecedented wave of Pottermania is about to hit movie goers, newspaper readers, Internet visitors and other innocent bystanders as Warner Bros gears up for the release of the eighth and final instalment of the Harry Potter film franchise.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2" is released in cinemas on July 15, and brings to an end one of cinema's most successful series. For the first time it's in 3D and there will — there absolutely has to be — resolution of the question: Harry or Voldemort? — by the end.

For those of sturdy constitution, Warner is putting on the whole series again in select British cinemas, starting with "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" on July 8, and then running through the week until the launch of Deathly Hallows — Part 2 the following Friday. We can expect many more such announcements and celebrations in the coming weeks.

Of course, most of the world knows the answer to the key question posed above, as it was in the seventh and final book of the series created by J.K. Rowling.

But the lack of a surprise ending is unlikely to dent the box office too badly, with experts predicting another ticket sale bonanza to bid farewell to the fictional boy wizard and his pals at Hogwarts.

That said, for all the impressive numbers — and in Hollywood terms, they are striking indeed — some studies suggest that attendance figures, as opposed to overall takings, have shown a sizeable decline in the United States over the 10-year life of the franchise.

It will be interesting to see if the anticipation and marketing ahead of the final chapter help to reverse that trend. — Reuters

LOS ANGELES, June 12 — Oscar-nominated actor, Academy Awards host, soap opera star, fiction author, visual artist, filmmaker, and PhD candidate James Franco juggles a number of creative careers and will soon add musician to his roster of work.

The actor is releasing an EP, titled "Turn It Up", with the New York-based experimental performance artist Kalup Linzy, according to New York magazine via Pitchfork.

The material on the Kalup and Franco collection will range from Motown to New Age to electro-pop, and the two plan to produce videos to accompany their live performances.

The duo has performed in New York together as a lounge act, at New York Fashion Week and the "Three's Company" performance-art installation at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

The song "Broken" has surfaced online with visuals that reflect the collaboration, featuring Franco's spoken words under Linzy's singing.

Casino giant plans expansion across Asia

LAS VEGAS, June 12 — Casino giant Las Vegas Sands is planning to expand across Asia, it confirmed this week, as figures suggested another Asian country will overtake Las Vegas in terms of gambling.

The gaming giant, which has already constructed massive resorts in Singapore and Macau, is looking to expand to other Asian nations and even to Europe, according to reports from the Global Gaming Expo Asia this week.

Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and Korea are among the company's Asia targets, with boss Sheldon Adelson describing the region as its "first preference."

Other targets include Spain, where Las Vegas Sands is said to be eyeing a €15 billion (RM65.5 billion) 'EuroVegas' strip development with 123,000 rooms, either in Madrid or Barcelona.

Although Macau overtook Las Vegas in terms of gambling revenue back in 2006, America's 'Sin City' was dealt another blow this week by the news that Singapore is expected to out-earn it this year, despite boasting just two integrated resorts.

Macau, a favored destination for Chinese tourists from the mainland, shows no sign of slowing, opening the new 2,200-room Galaxy Macau resort in May.

It is already home to The Venetian Macau, a 980,000 square meter development (owned by Las Vegas Sands) which opened in 2007 and remains the largest casino in the world.

Victorinox gives Swiss army knife an Asian edge

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 10:03 PM PDT

ZURICH, June 10 — A Swiss army knife is still a must-have souvenir for any tourist returning from the Alps, but soon it will soon come with an Asian twist.

Next month, manufacturer Victorinox will launch a multipurpose model reinterpreted by Japanese designer Kazuma Yamaguchi, who has produced a square version of the traditionally elongated oval-shaped red knife.

Dubbed Tomo, the Japanese word for "friends", this new model on offer in bright colours from Capri blue to Lemon yellow, is aimed at fashion-conscious customers and will be sold in places such as the Museum of Modern Arts in New York.

This is not the first transformation for the Swiss army knife, which comes in 350 versions costing between 9 and 422 Swiss francs (RM32 and RM1,500).

"Innovation has always been a key feature of the Swiss army knife", said CEO Carl Elsener Jr in an interview with Reuters at the company's headquarters in Ibach, a small rural town a stone's throw from the shores of Lake Lucerne.

Two years ago, Victorinox launched a model equipped with a USB flash drive that allows owners to encrypt data with a password and a biometric fingerprint sensor with temperature control.

This 21st century model even allows you to automatically destroy data in case of security breaches — a feature that would appeal to a secret agent or a 2.0 version of MacGyver, the US television character who never parted with his pocket companion in the action series broadcast in the late 1980s.

Victorinox has put its reliability to the test by inviting hackers to its flagship stores, offering a large cash reward to anyone who could break its security system.

"But so far, no one has prevailed," company spokesman Urs Wyss said.

Competitive edge

Victorinox, founded in 1884 by Karl Elsener, originally produced knives that did not differ much from competitors.

It nearly went bust the first time it worked with the Swiss army after a German competitor offered cheaper products just as Victorinox was about to deliver its first batch of knives.

The competitive edge for Victorinox came in 1897 when Elsener introduced a type of spring that enabled the knife to include more functions, such as a pair of scissors, a toothpick and a corkscrew.

After World War II, Victorinox knives gained popularity in the United States after US soldiers posted in Europe began buying them and taking them home.

Back then, the Swiss army knife benefited from an attractive exchange rate, of an average 4.30 Swiss francs per US dollar, making it an affordable present for family and friends.

Today the greenback trades at around 0.8360 per franc.

Although these days it's large groups of Chinese tourists who flock to Lucerne, the country's most visited city, and snap up Victorinox products.

The family-owned company, which generated a turnover of 500 million Swiss francs last year, exports 80 per cent of its products, while half of sales in Switzerland are to tourists.

When the Swiss franc is peaking, the Swiss army knife is seen as an inexpensive alternative to the products traditionally purchased in Switzerland, like watches, especially as Asian tourists like to bring back gifts when travelling to Europe, Elsener pointed out.

"They can still buy a box of 10 Swiss army knives to bring back home and spend less than a hundred francs," Elsener said. — Reuters

Hadi: Negara kebajikan boleh dibukti jika Pakatan diberi mandat teraju negara

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 02:33 AM PDT

Ucapan dasar Hadi pada Muktamar Tahunan PAS Ke-57 menekankan konsep membangun negara berkebajikan. — gambar fail

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 02:24 AM PDT

Bauhinia Heroine to the rescue!

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 05:08 PM PDT

JUNE 12 — There is a sexy superhero going around handing out money to the poor.

Unlike Robin Hood or the 1960s movie icon, the Black Rose (left, played by Connie Chan Po Chu), she does not steal from the rich; like most hardworking Hong Kongers, she uses her own hard-earned money to fund her nightly exploits in cage-house dwellings.

In an interview with the Sunday Morning Post (May 29), the woman described herself as a businesswoman in her 30s who earned hundreds of thousands of dollars a month.

Dressed in tights and a basque with long filmy sleeves, the blue-masked crusader who calls herself Bauhinia Heroine, has made it her mission to help the poor. Bauhinia is the flower that appears on the Hong Kong flag.

Bauhinia Heroine is particularly upset with the government's HKD6,000 (RM2,280) cash handout to HK permanent residents, which she says is unfair as the poor should receive more than the rich.

So by night, when her identity is less likely to be revealed, she roams the streets of some of the most destitute areas in this glitzy city.

The YouTube phenomenon has so far given away HKD8,000 in cash during two visits to Jordan and Sham Shui Po. The handouts were given in the form of HKD100 cash per person and rice, oil, cup noodles, burgers and biscuits.

The blood-sniffing paparazzi seem to be giving her leeway to retain the secrecy surrounding her identity. After all, Bauhinia Heroine did ask nicely to give her this allowance so she could carry on her work.

She has posted photographs of herself in costume on her Facebook page posing superhero-style, crouching on the ground with one leg stretched out ala Spider Man. In another image she holds out a fan of HKD100-dollar bills to the camera and in yet another she is giving cash and cup noodles to a resident.

While there are rumours flying around about who she may be with a fair number matching her ample cleavage to famous faces, Bauhinia Heroine wrote on her Facebook page that she was educated in England and the US, is from a well-known family and lives in the affluent Mid-Levels.

Is she doing it for the attention? Yes, says Bauhinia Heroine. She hopes that the media spotlight will encourage other well-to-do Hong Kongers who are fed up with the growing income disparity between the rich and the poor to join her.

The plan succeeded, to an extent. Bauhinia Heroine's generous escapades have captured the attention of the man behind 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy.

Filmmaker Steven Shiu is planning his next project, a superhero action movie featuring pseudo-model (a.k.a. "lang mo", wannabe models with shapely figures but lacking in height and training; popular for promotional work at book fairs) Chrissy Chau in the lead role. Filming is expected to begin late this year.

Bauhinia Heroine is not the only modern-day hero. Her Bangladeshi counterpart, Baidul Haq Nasir, 45, had been giving generously to orphanages and mosques for two decades when it was finally revealed that he was a burglar who had been stealing from the rich. Many in the city of Chittagong thought him to be an affluent businessman. Baidul was arrested on Wednesday.

It is still early days for the Bauhinia Heroine and her mission to ease poverty in Hong Kong. I would certainly love to hear from the folks who were graced by her presence and generosity.

Bauhinia Heroine is no stranger to the poor. She is said to be a regular volunteer who spends her time helping people. I think it is great that she has chosen a fun way (for readers and viewers) to highlight a growing problem in this city.

She chose mainly residents living in cage-houses, which are really larger versions of dog cages. One can only sit up or lie down in these cages which are sometimes stacked three-high. While HKD100 won't go a long way (rent is an estimated HKD1,500 a month), it has got to be a nice feeling to know that someone cares.

Going Gaga for local ‘reality’

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 05:00 PM PDT

JUNE 12 — I was having lunch with my wife the other day (I'm not really married but I've started telling people I am because sometimes you can get a free beer out of it) and in the middle of the meal, she says something along the lines of "You should chew your food at least 20 times before you swallow. It's supposed to wake your brain up to the fact that you're eating" or something like that. I'm not sure, I wasn't listening.

This kinda annoyed me a little, mainly because I didn't understand why she had chosen to wait till our 649th meal together before enlightening me with this little pearl of wisdom, and also because I've never been very good at chewing. My food, I mean. I'm very good at chewing other stuff. Like, you know ... gum.

Relationships are crazy. I love it, it's like I have my very own live-in image consultant. Unfortunately, I'm getting a little tired of having to dress in tight yellow dresses with pink floral patterns.

Don't get me wrong, aside from all the chafing, they're very comfortable. Trust me, fellas, you should give cross-dressing a go. Your wife will divorce you and humiliate you in front of your kids but don't worry, just tell the judge that Lady Gaga told you to do it and you'll probably just get a slap on the wrist.

Speaking of Lady Gaga, wow, what a loon, and trust me when I say, I don't mean that as an insult. I think she's the best kind of crazy, but you gotta admit, she does push it a little too much sometimes.

What cracks me up most about her is that she represents everything that is insane about celebrity culture. If she wasn't famous, there's not a chance in hell that anyone would ever think of her as a fashion icon or a genius. Seriously, what would you do if your colleague turned up at a function wearing a suit made out of meat? I know what I would do – I'd buy the meat suit back and give it to my vegetarian cousin as a wedding gift. In. Sane. But who cares, right? Born this way, right?

I had a great idea while driving to work the other day. Actually, I have great ideas every day but I choose not to share them for fear that I might start making friends. But anyway, I was driving to work and in front of me, going at about 10km/hour was a Learner Driver. Despite the fact it was a three-lane road, and I could have easily overtaken her, I decided to remain in the same lane, behind her. Now, there was a very simple explanation for this. By staying in the same lane, I was able to continue screaming obscenities at her. Have you ever tried doing this? Liar.

So here's my great idea. We've got reality TV shows that revolve around pretty much every stupid thing that we idiots like to waste our time on but one thing we don't have is a TV show that revolves around driving schools. Imagine how funny that would be. A show like that would work on so many levels. It would work as a comedy because you would get to see just how stupid some of the drivers on our beloved Malaysian streets actually are, students and teachers included.

It would work as an educational tool because it would educate you on how much the bribe for a Malaysian driving licence has grown over the years. And finally, we can show that Malaysia truly boleh (!) by creating our very own homegrown retarded reality TV celebrities.

Imagine Malaysia's very own version of Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton learning to drive. How awesome would that episode be? Hell, I'd watch it. Admit it, you would too. Now, don't try and copy this idea, okay, I'm about two minutes away from copyrighting it under my wife's name.

Some of you may be of the opinion that I'm taking this all a little too far, and you know what, maybe you're right. But it doesn't make a difference because the world is already screwed. Even if my amazing idea never goes beyond this little article, it doesn't matter because you're all slaves to this crap already. Every day, after work, you go home and sit yourself down and watch people humiliate themselves for your own entertainment.

Hey, don't feel bad about it, I do it too. We all do. It's okay, really it is. It's socially acceptable to laugh at these people now. It's the new "thing", which is why I'm surprised Malaysia hasn't tried to copy it yet. I mean, we copy everything else, so why not jump on to the sleazy reality TV bandwagon? Forget the respectable stuff. We want sleaze, we want brainless, we want Malaysia's answer to White Trash. Come on, guys, make it happen. All you need to do is look out your car window. The person in car next to you might be the country's next big star. Yee Ha!!
