SILVERSTONE, July 10 — Spain's Fernando Alonso won the British Grand Prix today for Ferrari's first victory of the season.

The win, 16.5 seconds ahead of Red Bull's world champion Sebastian Vettel, came on the 60th anniversary of the Italian team's first triumph in the Formula One world championship — also at Silverstone.

Australian Mark Webber, who had started on pole position, was third for Red Bull ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton who banged into Ferrari's Felipe Massa at the final corner to secure fourth.

Vettel, who had led from the start until a faulty wheelnut slowed him at his second pitstop, extended his overall lead over Webber to 80 points from a previous 77. — Reuters

Donald poised as Scottish Open second round finally ends

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 03:23 AM PDT

INVERNESS, July 10 — Briton Luke Donald stayed on course to keep his world No. 1 status going into next week's British Open when the weather-disrupted Scottish Open second round finished early today.

A five-under-par 67 by Donald took him to 10-under 134, just a stroke away from the joint leaders.

Fellow Britons Graeme McDowell, Scott Jamieson and Peter Whiteford finished their rounds on Friday to take over at the top before storms hit the Castle Stuart course to play havoc with the second round.

Swedish Ryder Cup player Peter Hanson returned to the course today to fire a 67 to make it a four-way lead.

Donald could still be overtaken in the rankings by compatriot and world number two Lee Westwood after the third and final round completes today.

Westwood's 71, after a similar return to the soaking Castle Stuart to finish his round, left him three strokes off the lead.

Colin Montgomerie's bid to clinch a British Open spot from a top five finish is still alive after the 48-year-old former European number one shot a 69 that also left him only three shots off the pace.

Veteran Briton Barry Lane is a surprise contender, lying just a stroke off the lead following a 67.

Lane, a member of the 1993 European Ryder Cup team that lost narrowly to the US at the Belfry, is mixing senior golf with regular tour events. He is seeking his sixth European Tour title seven years after his last — the 2004 British Masters. — Reuters

Argentine singer Facundo Cabral killed in Guatemala

GUATEMALA CITY, July 10 — Argentine singer Facundo Cabral, one of the stars of Latin American folk music, was shot dead in Guatemala City early yesterday when gunmen riddled his car with bullets, authorities said.

Cabral, who rose to fame in the 1970s as a protest singer, was on his way to the airport when three vehicles boxed in his white Range Rover and opened fire, killing him and injuring his driver, Guatemala's Interior Minister Carlos Menocal said.

Police earlier said the driver was killed.

Born to a poor family in 1937, the outspoken Cabral was best known for his 1970 song "No Soy De Aqui, Ni Soy De Alla" ("I'm Not From Here, I'm Not From There Either"), which was covered by many other artists including Julio Iglesias.

Cabral went into exile in Mexico during Argentina's 1976-83 military dictatorship. His songs later turned more spiritual and he continued to fill concert halls across Latin America. He had been in the Central American country on tour.

Argentine television stations interrupted their broadcasts with news of the 74-year-old singer's death.

Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom vowed swift action.

"We will find these criminals and bring them to justice," he said on Argentine radio.

Colom said he spoke to Argentine President Cristina Fernandez to offer his condolences for the killing, the motive for which was unclear. Guatemala, one of the region's poorest countries, has one of Latin America's highest murder rates.

Guatemalan authorities said the gunmen peppered Cabral's car with 18 bullets in an exchange of fire with the singer's security detail, which was in a separate vehicle.

His driver, businessman Henry Farina, was injured, along with one person from Cabral's security detail. Enrique Vaca Narvaja, Argentina's consul to Guatemala, told Argentine television Farina might also have been a target.

Cabral was mourned by fans across Latin America. Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman paid tribute to the singer.

"The murder of Facundo Cabral in Guatemala brings us great sadness," he wrote on his Twitter account. "Adios amigo!"

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez followed suit: "We are weeping with Argentina."

Edgar Palacios, 54, a fan in Guatemala City, said the singer would not be forgotten.

"Facundo Cabral died but his music will never die, just like John Lennon died but his music never died," he said. "Cabral wasn't just from one country. He was a universal man."

Guatemala has been racked by incursions from Mexican drug gangs, notably the brutal Zetas cartel.

Colom has struggled to contain the violence and Cabral's murder is an embarrassment to the president just two months before a first round of presidential elections that polls show his centre-left National Union of Hope party (UNE) may lose. Colom himself is barred by law from seeking re-election. — Reuters

Aussies set sights on ‘Quidditch’ world cup

SYDNEY, July 10 — Australians, renowned for their sporting prowess in cricket and rugby, now want to win a world cup for running around on broomsticks — otherwise known as Quidditch.

In J.K Rowling's hugely successful Harry Potter books and films, Quidditch is a semi-contact sport played by wizards and witches — as popular in their world as football or cricket is in real life.

The final instalment of the series hits movie screens in July, but the crowd-pulling sport of Quidditch has only just arrived in Australia.

"Four universities in Australia launched Muggle Quidditch teams this year," said Justin Chau, who founded the Quidditch Society at the University of New South Wales.

"On my campus it kicked off immediately with over 200 people joining in."

The rules of Muggle Quidditch — or Ground Quidditch — mirror the game invented by Rowling, which is played on flying broomsticks.

Three Chasers have to score through three hoops patrolled by a Keeper, with their task made harder by Bludgers — flying balls that attempt to knock over the players.

Each team has two Beaters whose role is to knock the Bludgers off towards opponents. The game does not end until the Seeker captures the Snitch, a walnut-size ball that hovers and darts around the field.

In the absence of flying broomsticks, Muggle Quidditch has been adapted to the law of gravity.

"Players have to run with a broom between their legs, avoiding the Bludgers that are thrown by the Beaters,' explains Chau.

"Unlike the real game, the Snitch is actually a person because obviously we don't have balls that fly around."

The sport has become popular in the United States, where it originated at Middlebury College in Vermont.

With the success of a Quidditch World Cup last November in New York, the International Quidditch Association was formed, and it now has teams from some 200 colleges.

Buoyed by the success of the US initiative, Australians are now trying to build up enough teams to create a national league.

"I heard about the World Cup and I thought it would be pretty awesome if we could have some sort of tournament going on in Australia," said Chau.

"We are not yet at a stage where we could take part in the World Cup. For now, we just want to build up a domestic competition."

Students from the four Australian universities where Quidditch is currently played are readying their brooms with the season expected to kick off once exams are over at the end of June.

"I believe Muggle Quidditch is going to catch on. The generation which is entering universities now is the Harry Potter generation," said Chau.

Even though the bulk of Quidditch players are hardcore Potter fans who turn out wearing capes and holding wands, there are also people who just enjoy the idea of a different sport.

"Basically, Quidditch is a mixture between dodgeball and European handball," said Mitchell Waters, who runs the team at the University of Western Sydney.

"It's an exciting game. The Human Snitch gives an element of suspense and surprise. I have heard stories of Seekers swimming across a lake to chase the Snitch," Chau added.

With the prospect of flying to New York to win the World Cup still remote, Australian players are turning their eyes toward New Zealand, where Muggle Quidditch is also becoming popular.

"A tournament between Australia and New Zealand could possibly be on the cards in the years to come as Quidditch becomes more and more popular," according to Hugo Will, director of New Zealand Quidditch.

He, like Chau, has bigger ambitions.

"My ultimate goal for New Zealand Quidditch in the next couple of years would be to get a team to the World Cup. I think that this could be exciting and a great opportunity to foster Quidditch in New Zealand," he said.

In the meantime, Chasers, Beaters, Keepers and Seekers are preparing for the release of the epic finale of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which opens in Sydney on July 13. — AFP/Relaxnews

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 03:13 AM PDT

Himpunan 9 Julai: Persatuan peniaga dakwa rugi RM100 juta

Posted: 10 Jul 2011 02:50 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR, 10 Julai — Presiden Pertubuhan Ikatan Usahawan Kecil Dan Sederhana Malaysia (Ikhlas) Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah mendakwa perhimpunan semalam menyebabkan peniaga kecil di sini kerugian kira-kira RM100 juta.

"Kami menjangka setiap seorang peniaga mengalami jumlah kerugian sebanyak RM10,000. Kita sudah ada seorang peguam, dan dua lagi menunggu untuk membantu kita dalam hal ini," katanya.
