The 21-year-old Spaniard, who also qualified on pole at the last race of 2013 and has won the first four of the year, continued his 100% record with a record time of one minute 32.042 seconds at the Le Mans circuit.

Rookie compatriot Pol Espargaro was second fastest for Tech3 Yamaha in their home race with Italian Andrea Dovizioso completing the front row on a Ducati.

Two world champions took their places on the second row, with factory Yamaha team mates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo qualifying fifth and sixth. Germany's Stefan Bradl lines up fourth on a Honda.

Marquez's Spanish team mate Dani Pedrosa, who recently underwent arm surgery, qualified only ninth.

Victory on Sunday will make Marquez, already the youngest MotoGP champion, the youngest rider to win five successive races in the premier class.

The record was set by Britain's late Mike Hailwood at the age of 22 years and 160 days in the 500cc class in 1962.

French Grand Prix promoters also announced today that they had extended their contract with rights holders Dorna Sports for a further five years to 2021. – Reuters, May 17, 2014

Cannes biopic probes Yves Saint Laurent dark side

The high priest of fashion who pioneered tuxedos for women and ready-to-wear is shown cruising for sex, taking cocaine and pills and indulging in casual cruelty to women in Bertrand Bonello's film "Saint Laurent".

The Yves Saint Laurent that emerges is far darker than the character presented by a rival biopic released earlier this year that won the support of Saint Laurent's romantic and business partner Pierre Berge.

Producer Eric Altmayer said the news that director Jalil Lespert was also making a movie about the designer had come as a surprise.

Unlike their film, Lespert's received the "firm support" of Berge who repeatedly and publicly demonstrated his approval.

But he said the emergence of a second film ultimately had a liberating effect on the production, allowing them to avoid the usual constraints of the traditional biopic.

"We had access to absolutely nothing, not even a shirt," he told reporters.

"We rented these costumes from a collector, all the dresses you see... had to be recreated. We built a studio with all the seamstresses... it was a tremendous investment in terms of time and effort," he said.

Saint Laurent, who died aged 71 in 2008, is regarded as one of the most influential designers in fashion history.

His creations such as the trapeze dress and the female tuxedo or Le Smoking became instant classics and largely shaped the way women dress today, according to fashion historians.

French actor Gaspard Ulliel donned Saint Laurent's trademark horn-rimmed glasses and bouffant, helmet-like hairstyle for the film which starts at the height of the designer's depression in 1974.

"Yves was born a depressive almost. He had suffered from depression from adolescence at least," Ulliel said in production notes.

"His homosexuality also exposed him to mockery and hasty judgements, as did his fragility and slenderness. Part of his success undoubtedly comes from taking revenge on the hand life had dealt him," he added.

Bonello's non-linear film, largely concentrating on a few episodes between 1967 and 1976, vividly conjures up the hedonistic pre-AIDS days of the early 1970s.

There are gay sex parties and drinking and drug-taking in nightclubs with muses Betty Catroux and Loulou de la Falaise played by newcomer Aymeline Valade and "Blue is the Warmest Colour" star Lea Seydoux respectively.

Bonello said he did not set out to make a traditional biopic that showed how "Saint Laurent became Saint Laurent".

Instead, he said, he tried to show "what it costs him to be Saint Laurent... having to deliver four collections a year, being a star", he added in the notes.

Critics were largely unimpressed, albeit more complimentary than they were about its "bland" rival.

"(The film) while seductively silly and largely unmoving, does a better job than its predecessor of celebrating Saint Laurent's flamboyant artistry," said entertainment magazine Variety.

"Bonello's sexier number must gamble on sustained audience interest in a chilly figure whose life – notwithstanding the drugs, desires and debauchery that go with the high-fashion terrain – wasn't extraordinarily dramatic."

The Hollywood Reporter said the screenplay rarely managed to "get inside the head of the self-destructive character the designer had become by the 1970s".

The film was 47 minutes longer than its rival "though to no apparent benefit," it added.

"Saint Laurent" is one of 18 films in competition for the top Palme d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival. – AFP, May 17, 2014

Big laughs at Cannes for Almodovar-produced ‘Wild Tales’

One of 18 contenders in competition at the world's biggest film festival, the movie by 38-year-old Damian Szifron plays out in six absurdly violent episodes.

It starts off with a striking brunette making her way onto a plane, where she takes her seat next to a distinguished music critic who soon chats her up.

In conversation they realise they know the same man, her ex Gabriel Pasternak, whom the the critic gave a career-killing review for a composition years before.

It is soon revealed that all the passengers on the flight had wronged Pasternak at some stage in their lives, and received their plane tickets under mysterious circumstances.

And just guess who has locked himself in the cockpit, aiming the jet at his parents' home.

'Dog in a cage'

The scene ahead of the opening credits sparked spontaneous applause from the crowd during a press preview, settling the tone for a rollicking two hours of similar, unconnected vignettes.

A cheating lover, a corrupt towing company, a brute overcome by road rage and a parasitic loan shark get their comeuppance in a bitingly funny satire that marked a welcome break from the rigorous dramas that make up much of the Cannes programme.

But the film also serves up powerful portrayals of mad-as-hell people pushed to the breaking point by a drip, drip, drip of corruption, injustices and inequality, leading them to abandon social niceties and finally explode.

Szifron, a descendant of Poles who escaped the Nazis during World War II, wrote and directed the award-winning television series "Los Simuladores" and is currently working on an English-language Western.

He said he thought the themes of frustrated people trying to keep it together carried far beyond Argentines' particular problems.

"I think the Western capitalist world in particular... distorts people's true nature a great deal. A dog that is poorly fed and stuck in a cage is a bit like us, it gets overwhelmed," he told reporters.

"You can see all these people who work in offices, who put on a suit every morning and suffer from tremendous pressure: mobile phones, they are constantly subjected to these ads, encouraged to buy this or that which they may or may not need. I think that people live very stressful lives."

Almodovar, the Oscar-winning Spanish director behind "Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown", "Volver" and "Talk to Her", was in town for the red-carpet premiere.

His brother Augustin told reporters the comic timing and self-assured style of Szifron's previous work had led them to back the film.

Critics gave what had been a "wild card" in the festival's competition high marks.

Chris Knight of Canada's National Post tweeted that he had "never laughed more at Cannes than" during "Wild Tales": "If it wins, the Palme d'Or has a sense of humour."

BuzzFeed critic Alison Willmore called it "a terrific surprise – kinetic, darkly funny, much fun".

And British film magazine Screen Daily hailed it as an "innovative and increasingly scathing social comedy" that was "brilliantly conceived and confidently delivered".

The Palme d'Or will be presented by the Cannes jury president, New Zealand director Jane Campion, on May 24. – AFP, May 17, 2014

Modi faces mammoth task to meet India’s soaring expectations

Posted: 17 May 2014 05:35 AM PDT

May 17, 2014

From an unmarked office in Gandhinagar, the capital of Modi's home state of Gujarat, the young men and women, some on sabbaticals from firms like JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank, worked on turning a fragmented parliamentary election involving 543 seats into a presidential-style referendum on candidate Modi.

In doing so, Modi cut loose from the traditional Delhi-based structure of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its apparatchiks and adopted the language of a youthful country eager for change, using everything from holograms to WhatsApp.

The modern approach worked: just an hour into the counting of votes on Friday, it was clear that the 63-year-old Modi was heading for a stunning victory with the strongest mandate any Indian government has enjoyed for 30 years.

By evening, the BJP and its allies were leading the count in 339 parliamentary seats, far ahead of the 272 majority required to rule. Even on its own, the BJP had crossed the halfway mark.

So great appears to be the desire for change, especially among India's middle class some 300 million strong, and so firmly has Modi stayed on message, that a dark chapter of violence against Muslims on his watch has mattered less and less to many voters.

Modi, a Hindu nationalist, has long faced allegations that he looked the other way when Hindu mobs went on a rampage of revenge against Muslims in Gujarat after a train carrying Hindu pilgrims was torched in 2002.

He has denied the allegations and a Supreme Court ordered inquiry absolved him of responsibility.

India's election victor Narendra Modi's critics depict him as an autocratic Hindu supremacist who would tyrannise the country's minority Muslims. – Reuters pic, May 17, 2014.Modi has refused calls for remorse for the lives lost, most of them from the sizeable Muslim minority of more than 150 million people. Instead he has donned the mantle of an economic moderniser, building on Gujarat's mercantile traditions.

"Development is the only agenda that can save the country," Modi said in a victory speech in Gujarat during which he also called for an end to divisive politics.

"Development is the solution to all problems, development is the cure for all diseases," he told thousands gathered there.

India's 'Guangdong'

In recent years, the state Modi has governed since 2001 has been compared with Guangdong province, the spearhead of China's economic revival.

Since Modi took control, Gujarat has led the nation in GDP growth. It accounts for 16 percent of industrial output and 22 percent of exports, despite having 5 percent of its population.

Under his stewardship, farmers and industry have been assured uninterrupted power, albeit at high rates, and bureaucratic controls slashed.

A central government-ordered study last month said it had the best land acquisition policies in place, among all of India's 29 states in terms of ease of doing business.

Land, by far, has been the single biggest hurdle around the country, holding up 90 percent of infrastructure projects.

Gujarat's highways are India's fastest, a far cry from the potholed roads in the northern belt, and its ports are among the busiest.

But repeating that success nationally presents significant challenges in a country with a complex federal structure, a bureaucracy more wedded to socialist controls than reform and a growing gap between rich and poor among its 1.2 billion people.

India must create 10 million jobs a year, four times the pace of the last 5 years, to absorb youth into the workforce.

And unlike China, India is not centralised. Modi will have a fight on his hands to gain full cooperation from many state governments, which he needs to implement his agenda nationwide.

Some have said the pace of development in Gujarat has caused environmental damage and threatened small communities, and that crony capitalism flourished under Modi's unquestioned rule.

Critics also say it lags behind other states in social indicators such as mortality rates.

But the criticisms have failed to stick.

"Modi has led from the front. None of this would have been possible, but for him," said Rajnath Singh, the president of the BJP and a close associate.

'Purveyor of dreams'

Modi, with his neatly-trimmed white beard, was the only face of the campaign. He has covered 300,000 km since being named the BJP's prime ministerial candidate in September, addressing 457 meetings. When he could not show up, he appeared as a hologram.

"He has become a purveyor of dreams," said Sanjay Gupta, a former state bureaucrat who quit to go into business and start a chain of hotels. "Its hard to see how he can meet all the pent-up aspirations without re-engineering the system."

The son of a railway station tea-seller, Modi has humble roots which he reminds voters are in contrast to the privileged upbringing of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and its scion Rahul Gandhi, who led the campaign for the ruling Congress party.

Modi left home after school, virtually cutting off all family ties as he found his calling in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a right wing organisation that serves as the ideological parent of Hindu groups and the BJP.

Its members, who hold military-style drills and indoctrination sessions at grounds across the country each morning, seek to make India a great power, militarily strong and economically prosperous.

Kishore Makwana, a member of the RSS who used to ride pillion on Modi's scooter during his days as a RSS propagandist, said Modi would sometimes sleep on the pavement because he had arrived too late at a host's house and thought it impolite to knock at that hour.

"He hasn't forgotten those days. He is firmly rooted," Makwana said.

One thing Modi has never talked about publicly is his failed marriage, which reportedly took place when he was in his teens and after the couple had been spoken for by their parents in the tradition of that time.

Last month he disclosed for the first time that he was married to Jashodaben in an election declaration after leaving the form vacant in two earlier elections he fought.

Modi, according to unofficial biographies, did not accept the marriage and may have left his home for that reason. Jashodaben went back to her brother's house where she has lived and hasn't met her husband for more than 40 years.

Modi, said to be a loner, has kept away from his immediate family too, meeting his mother and brothers only occasionally. In an interview he has said that his real education took place in the RSS and that he owed everything to the organisation.

To some, his background in the Hindu group and his handling of the riots in Gujarat remain a cause of concern. Critics say the RSS is deeply opposed to Muslims and that its objective of a Hindu India was a challenge to India's secular traditions.

The organisation says it only opposes appeasement of any community.

"I find the idea of Narendra Modi as the prime minister of this country deeply repugnant. It is an assault on the idea of India, because of what he represents and what his track record has been," said former Congress federal minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, one of Modi's most trenchant critics.

Within Gujarat itself, critics point to the segregation that has taken place over the last decade. For Muslims it is difficult to buy property in areas dominated by Hindus, forcing the community's fast-growing urban middle class to live in cramped and decrepit corners of cities.

"Modi is set to govern all of India, the 150 million Muslims included, and there is reason to be cautious," said Ruchir Sharma, head of emerging markets at Morgan Stanley. – Reuters, May 17, 2014.

Cambodia’s royal oxen predict ‘quit good’ harvest

Hundreds of people watched to see what the cows ate to signal the coming year's harvests at the Royal Ploughing ceremony, presided over by King Norodom Sihamoni in a football field outside Phnom Penh.

After a symbolic ploughing of a portion of the field, a pair of royal cows were led to seven dishes – rice, corn, beans, sesame, grass, water and alcohol – laid out on trays.

The rice, corn, beans and sesame represent the harvest. The more the oxen eat the better.

If they eat grass, it means illness, and if they drink water, it means floods, while sipping alcohol portends war.

"As the royal cows ate beans, sesame, corn, and rice, the harvest will be quite good," chief astrologer Kang Ken declared, to the relief of superstitious onlookers.

"Our agricultural harvest will be good. And our country will be peaceful," Sam Sokhom, 59, told AFP after the ceremony, which marks the start of the planting season in the kingdom. – AFP, May 17, 2014

An Arsenal day to remember

Posted: 16 May 2014 05:54 PM PDT

May 17, 2014

Anand K.Pillai (a.k.a. K.Anand) is the number one Gooner (that's Arsenal supporter, for the uninformed) in Malaysia. He promises to be fair and balanced when writing about some of their rivals, but hopes readers will excuse the occasional lapse.

Yes, the headline says it all… there is much optimism surrounding the match of the decade for all Arsenal supporters today.

It is the day of the FA Cup Final and Arsenal are playing Hull City at Wembley Stadium, with the kick-off set for 5pm (midnight, Malaysian time).

All around the world, Gooners will be dancing in the street – but especially in Islington, North London – should The Arsenal live up to their favourites tag and finally win a major trophy after an 8-season drought.

Fan parties are gathering steam as the hours count down and Malaysia is no exception with two main events organised by the local official supporters club, Arsenal Malaysia.

Not for the first time, Arsenal Malaysia are organising a Live Football Cinema Experience event. The last one was in November 2012, when Arsenal defeated bitter rivals Spurs 5-2 at Emirates Stadium.

The FA Cup Final is assured to be as enjoyable, and more importantly, as successful an event with 300 Malaysian Gooners, including some VIP and celebrity guests, joining forces to cheer their beloved team at MBO Cinemas at Citta Mall, in Ara Damansara.

The Cinema Experience is certainly one to relish as it is the closest feeling to being at the stadium itself, watching the match in high definition on a digital screen that is larger than any projector can emulate.

But there are certainly many more who are part of the Malaysian Arsenal family, since the cinema can fit only 300. So, all Arsenal supporters are invited to be at Herris Restaurant in Damansara Perdana.

Both events start at 9.30pm, with lucky draws to win official merchandise, video screenings and a special launch of the Arsenal Corner at Herris, as part of the pre-match excitement. More information is available on the Arsenal Malaysia page on Facebook.

As for me, I am living it up as an Arsenal supporter of more than 35 years.

Arriving in London early this month to watch everything Arsenal, I was at the final home match of the season against West Bromwich Albion on May 4, the last away match at Norwich City on May 11 and the global Arsenal supporters club gathering for a special tournament at Emirates Stadium on May 10.

Both the home and away matches were first-time experiences for me. Well, I had been to Highbury to watch matches before but never to the Emirates for a match. And the away match was the first competitive one I had been to. The Gunners have obviously played "away" in Malaysia before.

What more could a Gooner want? Well, a ticket for the FA Cup Final at Wembley and a chance to bask in the glory of Arsenal winning a trophy again.

My prayers were answered but of course at a fairly higher price than one might expect to pay, even for a Cup Final.

With ticket allocations for Arsenal supporters being limited to only 25,000 by the English Football Association – Hull City got 25,000 too, while the FA's corporate "friends" received 40,000… yeah, go figure – the prices skyrocketed as soon as they were allocated to some season ticket holders.

I will be in Wembley but I feel for so many thousands more who deserve to be there too, but cannot make it for whatever reason.

There is a silver lining for three Gooners though, thanks to Piers Morgan. Yes, the sometimes irritating British newsman who admits to being sacked by CNN not too long ago.

He had three tickets from the Arsenal allocation to the Platinum and Gold members. But he later got his usual box seats at Wembley as well. As a result, he decided to give away his tickets to three deserving Gooners.

The first one went to the Gooner featured in this column two months ago, the Gooner on the Road Peter Anderson, and the other two were given to a 12-year-old boy suffering from cancer and his dad.

Piers Morgan has a heart, and as told to me by Anderson, "he is quite a nice bloke, and also agreed to top up the shortfall in my cancer fund-raising effort". Well, Morgan is a long-time Gooner after all.

So, it all comes down to this.

Whether you are watching it at the cinema, a restaurant, a mamak joint, or as I am blessed to be doing, at the famous Wembley Stadium, my message to Arsenal fans is "Keep Calm and Support The Gunners" – our time has come again. – May 17, 2014.

Gambar fail The Malaysian Insider.

BN umum presiden Gerakan calon PRK Teluk Intan
