Ready for python pizza? Florida diners get a taste

The pie has python meat, alligator sausage and frogs legs. - AFP pic, February 1, 2014.Alligator and frog have long been on the menu in Florida, but a new delicacy has slithered its way onto dinner plates in the US state.

A pizzeria now offers Burmese python meat on what it calls the "Everglades Pizza" – named for Florida's vast national park, where the snakes are being hunted to protect the nature preserve.

"It was just to create talk about the shop and being creative and this thing literally just went viral," says Evan Daniell, the owner of Evan's Neighborhood Pizza in the Gulf Coast city of Fort Myers.

"People talk about it all the time and whether it's negative or positive, it really doesn't matter because the fact is: we can make it and it's delicious."

So, the big question: what does it taste like?

"It's good but a little chewy," says Mike, a tourist taking the python plunge from Minnesota.

"It tastes like chicken but chewier," his wife Becky adds.

Daniell admits that python meat "can be gamier". The chef tenderises the slabs of snake meat by marinating them for several hours. They are then sliced thinly into what he calls "snake slivers".

Before laying it onto the pizza, making sure "each slice has a piece of python", Daniell pre-cooks the snake in the oven for a few minutes.

"There is some pink into the snake, and as it turns white, it will be done," he explains.

Despite its steep price tag of $45 (RM150), the "Everglades" pizza certainly has its fans.

Daniell's pal Mike Gookin says he came up with the idea of using the snake meat to spice up pizzas after seeing a news report on the python problem in the Everglades.

The pizza also features alligator sausage and frog legs. Both are native to southern Florida. The pythons are definitely not, but they are everywhere.

"There could be thousands or tens of thousands of Burmese pythons in the wild here," explains Roberto Torres, a field officer with The Nature Conservancy.

The snakes can measure up to six metres long and they are believed to have made the Everglades their home after being released by their owners.

"They get them as pets and when they get too big, they release them here," Torres says, his feet deep in the mud of the wetlands near the suburbs of Miami where pythons have been spotted regularly.

Burmese pythons have no known predator in Florida, so they sit atop the food chain in their new home. As a result, environmental experts like Torres fear their presence could end up threatening biodiversity in the Everglades.

"It's a perfect habitat for the snake – it's wet, there is plenty of food... They'll eat anything they can catch – birds, fish, mammals, cats, dogs," Torres says.

To raise awareness about the python invasion, chefs in Miami have held several events with python on the menu along with other non-native species.

But current food safety regulations do not allow the invasive snakes captured in Florida to be slaughtered and processed regularly to be sold in restaurants.

As a result, Daniell's python meat is not local.

"I buy it frozen from a wholesaler who imports farmed python from Vietnam," the restaurateur explains. - AFP, February 1, 2014.

German beer consumption drops for seventh year

Shifting consumer tastes have seen brewers market more non-alcoholic as well as fruit-flavoured and other varieties of beer. - AFP/Relaxnews pic, February 1, 2014.Shifting consumer tastes have seen brewers market more non-alcoholic as well as fruit-flavoured and other varieties of beer. - AFP/Relaxnews pic, February 1, 2014.Germans are slowly losing their taste for beer, with domestic sales of the amber nectar down for the seventh year in a row, the national statistics office said Thursday.

The output of German breweries dropped 2% in 2013 on the previous year to the lowest level since German reunification in 1989, said the Destasis statistics office.

Shifting consumer tastes have seen brewers market ever more non-alcoholic as well as fruit-flavoured and other varieties, and bank on exports to China and the United States.

The total output of German breweries reached 94.6 million hectolitres (2.49 billion gallons) last year, of which 79.7 million hectolitres or 84%, were sold on the domestic market.

Other Europeans also drank less German beer, with sales within the European Union down 8.6%. Overall, German beer exports fell 3.8%.

The German Brewers Federation blamed a long, harsh winter and an often rainy summer in 2013 for keeping Germans from guzzling lagers and ales in beer gardens and parks.

But it also conceded that the slow downward trend was set to continue in the ageing country, which has long ranked near the top of the global list for per-capita beer consumption.

Federation chief Holger Eichele welcomed an "encouraging trend" of rising sales in the United States and China, as exports to non-European markets rose 8.7%.

In a statement, the federation said foreign beer lovers placed a premium on "the unique taste and absolute clarity and purity of beers brewed according to the German purity law".

Germany's famed 500-year-old "Reinheitsgebot" or beer purity law mandates that the national beverage be made from only four ingredients – water, hops, malt and yeast.

Europe's biggest beer producer, Germany has 1,300 breweries that now make about 5,000 different beers, says the federation.

German brewers last year applied to have the country's beer making tradition placed on the Unesco list of the world's "intangible cultural heritage". - AFP/Relaxnews, February 1, 2014.

Brazilian Lucas Moura set up both goals. The league's top scorer Ibrahimovic netted his 18th of the season after 58 minutes before Brazil defender Alex produced a deft half-volley two minutes from time.

PSG have 54 points from 23 games, six ahead of second-placed Monaco who visit mid-table Lorient today.

France midfielder Cabaye, the club's midweek signing from Newcastle United, came on as a substitute and hit the post with a header.

The evening started with the fans cheering Cabaye but PSG were booed at the break after failing to create any clear-cut chances.

The hosts eventually went ahead when Sweden forward Ibrahimovic tapped the ball into the net from close range following Moura's precise low cross from the right.

Cabaye, 28, replaced Javier Pastore late on and almost netted from an Ezequiel Lavezzi centre.

"I have no worries for Yohan. He's a smart lad, he knows how we want to play and will easily adapt," coach Laurent Blanc told a news conference.

PSG wrapped up victory when Alex popped up in the area to turn Moura's corner into the net.

"With his pace and technique you give Lucas the ball and he sets up some incredible things," Blanc said.

The only worry for PSG, who meet Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last 16 next month, came when striker Edinson Cavani left the field in the second half with a thigh problem. - Reuters, February 1, 2014.

Jose Mourinho says Chelsea ‘not title candidates’

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 02:33 PM PST

February 01, 2014

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho (pic) has dismissed his side's chances of winning the Premier League this season no matter what the outcome of their trip to leaders Manchester City on Monday.

Chelsea will head to the Etihad Stadium three points adrift of City, who replaced Arsenal at the summit after crushing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

A victory against Manuel Pellegrini's side will see Chelsea draw level on points with them, but Mourinho believes his team are not yet ready to be installed as genuine title contenders.

"We are not favourites to win any competition," he said, before vowing that Chelsea will pose a greater threat next term.

"The speech will change completely next pre-season, and not just the speech. Normally the speech is adapted to the feelings, knowledge and experience.

"Next pre-season, day one, I will say we are candidates to win the Premier League. This season, I won't say that. It's not what we feel or what we're working for.

"If we win or if we lose (at City), I don't think we're candidates. If we win, obviously, we're the same points as City. If we lose, the distance is six.

"It doesn't matter. It is not what concerns me. What concerns me is my team playing well and trying to get the best possible results, feel the improvements.

"And next pre-season, you will hear me say something completely different. I don't give up. I'll try to win the next match, against whoever. We will try to win."

Mourinho's efforts to build for the future have been strengthened by the signing of Kurt Zouma, the France Under-21 defender, from Saint-Etienne for a reported fee of around £12 million (RM65.9 million).

The 19-year-old centre-back has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract, but will remain on loan at his current club for the remainder of this season.

"He's another young player in the profile of some Chelsea signings in the last few years. We like the profile. We think he's very much adapted to the Premier League," Mourinho said.

"If you don't do it now, probably we couldn't do it in the summer because other clubs were also very strong on him. So we did it. Now he stays at Saint-Etienne.

"Pre-season he'll join us. We'll see if it's to stay or go on loan, but he's a young player in a position where we also need the future."

Zouma follows Nemanja Matic, Mohamed Salah and Bertrand Traore into the club this month, prompting Mourinho to hail the long-term foundations being laid down at Stamford Bridge.

"The greater objective is the improvement of the team and preparing the team for the future," he said.

"To do something now as an emergency plan is not the best thing. The players we're signing now are the right ones for our future: Matic, Salah, Zouma, a young kid for the future.

"We don't sign a striker now as an emergency plan to score half a dozen goals to give us half a dozen extra points, whatever they mean for us. So we're waiting for the summer to do the right thing in that area." - AFP, February 1, 2014.

Ophidiophobics beware: flying snakes have great aerodynamics

Scientists studying the amazing gliding proficiency of an Asian species known as the paradise tree snake say it does two things as it goes airborne. It splays its ribs in order to flatten its profile from round into a more triangular form, and it undulates while airborne - sort of swimming through the air.

Researchers led by Jake Socha, an expert in biomechanics at Virginia Tech, replicated in a plastic model the shape the snake assumes while airborne, and tested it to evaluate its aerodynamic qualities.

They placed the snake model in a water tunnel and used a laser to track flow patterns around the model.

"Our expectations going in were that it would not be very good because it does not look like a classically streamlined, airplane-type cross-sectional shape," Socha said in a telephone interview yesterday.

"What we got were some surprising aerodynamic characteristics. In fact, it was much better than we anticipated," Socha added.

The paradise tree snake is one of the world's five species of flying snakes, all from the genus Chrysopelea. To be precise, they are gliders, not actual flyers like birds and bats that achieve powered flight.

The mildly venomous snake - green and black with occasional touches of red and orange - has a diameter roughly equal to a human finger and is up to three feet (one metres) long. It lives in rain forests in Southeast Asia and South Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The snake takes to the air from trees, and is capable of gliding about 100 feet (30 metres). Socha said its gliding ability enables the snake to escape trouble and to get from one place to the next efficiently. He doubted that the creature is taking to the air in order to spot prey like lizards below.

"You can glide to a tree 30 metres away much more quickly than if you had to slither down the tree and then slither across the forest floor and then climb back up that tree," said Socha, whose research was published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

This snake is one of numerous animals around the world that can glide through the air. Six types of mammals are gliders, including flying squirrels and an arboreal critter called the colugo. Some lizards also glide, including the Draco lizard and some geckos.

There are even gliding frogs and gliding wingless ants, as well as types of flying fish and even gliding squid.

Scientists are eager to unlock the secrets of flying snakes, especially considering that a snake shape would seem to be bad for aerodynamics. This study was funded in part by the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which Socha said was interested in the basic science behind what makes the snakes good gliders.

To people with ophidiophobia, the idea of a flying snake may be nightmarish. But Socha offered some reassuring thoughts.

"They are small and they're effectively harmless," Socha said. "And to tell you the truth, they're much more scared of you than you are of them. If you are near them, they're gliding away from you and not at you." - Reuters, January 31, 2014.

Israeli settlers’ archaeology tourism plans seen deepening roots

On an ancient hill dotted with 1,000-year-old olive trees, Israelis are busy excavating in search of the first palace of King David in the heart of the West Bank.

The Jewish settlers who started the dig with the help of Israel's Antiquities Authority say they want to turn it into an archaeological park to celebrate its historical significance.

But for Palestinians who hope the West Bank will someday form part of a Palestinian state, the move is a grab not only for land but also for their past – a ploy to cut them out of history and away from land they say is rightfully theirs.

The Bible says David, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah, first ruled in Hebron before conquering Jerusalem to the north.

"You come to see where King David started his first palace, it blows you away. I don't know. It blows me away!" said David Wilder, spokesman for the Jewish community in Hebron.

The dig, located on a plot of Jewish-owned land that is part of an island of 500 settlers among some 250,000 Palestinians, takes place under the protective eyes of Israeli soldiers toting automatic weapons.

Most countries consider the settlements Israel has built on land captured in the 1967 Middle East war as illegal, and Palestinians fear the enclaves will deny them a viable state made up of East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.

The promotion of archaeological sites on this disputed land goes to the heart of the most explosive issues in Israel-Palestinian peace talks being brokered by Washington – building on occupied land, the status of Jerusalem and the future of Israel as a "Jewish state".

"I want people to visit Hebron and leave with the cultural and religious significance of the site to the Jewish people, the state of Israel and people around the world," Wilder said.

"You don't live in the past, but the past is an arrow showing where you've come from and where you can go to."

Shuaib al-Tamimi, a 22-year-old Palestinian watching the excavation from behind a new chain-link fence around the site next to his family home, voiced his contempt for the plan.

"Of course there are antiquities here, Roman antiquities. To say Solomon's palace or whatever was here is a conspiracy and a big lie," he said.

"They come and plant the stones here, just to serve their own interests and take away our rights."

"Judaising"

The first big marriage of settlement and archaeology tourism was the "City of David" theme park in occupied East Jerusalem, where densely packed Arab homes stand cheek by jowl with settler houses, surveillance cameras and private security guards.

Many of the homes are subject to demolition as they were built without Israeli government permits, which can be difficult for Palestinians to obtain.

The City of David welcomes Israeli school children, soldiers and evangelical Christians, among others, to the purported location of another of David's palaces, which scholars believe is the Holy City's oldest inhabited area.

Israel cites such roots in laying its claim to all of Jerusalem, including the eastern area captured in 1967, and in designating the city its "eternal and indivisible capital".

The pro-settler organisation Elad owns much of the land on which the City of David is located, including several houses for Israeli settlers that are scattered next to the ruins.

Since January 12, Israel has started extending the area of the park with a new Israeli dig on its fringes, drawing the anger and frustration of Palestinians who lack the authority to do anything about it.

Demolition orders were also given to eight Palestinian structures in the same neighbourhood, around a plot slated by Jerusalem's Israeli-run municipality for a Bible-themed park and shopping area called "The King's Garden".

Activist groups have gone to court to challenge the way the City of David is run – it is managed by the Israeli Parks Authority as a national park but operated by Elad.

"It was our claim that a private political and very right-wing organisation misused these powers to advance its political agenda, part of which is to Judaise East Jerusalem," said Michael Sfard, an Israeli lawyer involved in the legal action.

The court threw out the petition, but the parks authority promised to review how the site is operated.

Existential question

In the West Bank hills north of Jerusalem, Judy Simon stands by a modest ruin and ancient oak at Beit El settlement, where the Bible says the patriarch Jacob dreamt of a ladder reaching to heaven, making the spot, she says, "a connection between heaven and earth".

Wearing a head scarf in the manner of Orthodox Judaism, Simon, who is the settlement's tourism manager, reads Hebrew Bible verses, slowly closing the book and kissing it.

"We read here that the Land of Israel was promised to Abraham and Jacob... and the irony is that, today, it's considered disputed," she said.

Her tours around the site aim to impress upon visitors the centrality of the West Bank to Jews' religion and history.

Palestinians' own efforts to showcase their past are stymied by their lack of direct control over around two-thirds of the West Bank, as well as a lack of cash and internal political divisions that push the issue deep down the list of priorities.

However one attempt has been made in the Palestinian village of Beitin, which scholars say preserves the Biblical name of Beit El next door. Excavations begun late last year are hoped to turn the remains of a Byzantine monastery and medieval mosque into a tourist site.

"We think archaeology is being used as a cover for settlement policy, and (Israel's) lack of coordination with Palestinian authorities is a political decision," said Hamdan Taha, head of the Palestinian Authority's Department of Antiquities in Ramallah.

"We intend to present the cultural history of Palestine, whether Jewish, Christian or Muslim, as an integral whole, while one-sided excavations in Hebron and Jerusalem will only deepen the conflict and make a negotiated solution harder."

Simon, in Beit El, said she thinks Israel should annex the West Bank and give Palestinians full citizenship, but maintain the state's Jewish character. The settlement issue for her is an existential question of Jews' past and future.

"What kind of peace would it be if we're made to leave our homes?" she said. – Reuters, January 31, 2014.

Bruno Mars ‘ain’t scared’ over Super Bowl show

The 28-year-old from Honolulu, whose mother was from the Philippines and whose father was from New York, will perform during Super Bowl 48, which pits the Seattle Seahawks against the Denver Broncos for the NFL crown.

"It's my job to uplift the people," Mars said yesterday. "I'm going to give it all I've got. Whatever happens happens. I ain't scared if that's what you think... I want the world to watch.

"I don't do trapeze and all that stuff. I hope to get people dancing and smiling. It's just us with our instruments up there. I hope that's enough."

Mars said after he accepted the offer to perform that he was told he could have another act join him and selected the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will also sing during the half-time show.

"They are the first band I thought of. They are just a soulful band," he said. "It's an honor to be sharing the stage with them. They are one of my favorite bands of all time."

Asked about some of his favorite prior half-time performers, Mars named Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Beyonce and the late Michael Jackson.

"It's prestigious they gave a new guy a shot," Mars said. "We were all watching last year and wondering what if we got the call to do that.

"We're honored. Some greats have performed on that stage. We're excited about it."

Mars refused to side with one team or the other for the big game, saying that growing up, he followed the University of Hawaii team and attended the annual NFL Pro Bowl all-star game in Honolulu.

"Whoever has got the most Polynesians on their team, that's who we're rooting for," Mars said.

Thanks to Denver defensive lineman Sione Fua, an American of Tongan heritage, you can mark down Mars as a Broncos fan, sort of.

One issue the players and Mars will have to contend with is the cold. This will be the first Super Bowl to be staged outdoors in a cold-weather city and temperatures near freezing are predicted.

"You never know what to expect," Mars said. "We just started rehearsing two nights ago. The microphone turned into a popsicle. It was frozen. Things like that you don't take into consideration.

"We're working on getting heaters for everything." – AFP, January 31, 2014.

Tempoh tahanan reman Shalwati dilanjutkan

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 02:58 AM PST

January 31, 2014

Semalam, mahkamah sama membenarkan permohonan pendakwaan bagi melanjutkan tempoh tahanan reman suami Shalwati, Azizul Raheem Awalludin, selama 11 hari lagi iaitu sehingga 10 Februari.

- Bernama, 31 Januari, 2014.

MCA senarai pendek calon DUN Kajang

Posted: 31 Jan 2014 01:30 AM PST

January 31, 2014

- Bernama, 31 Januari, 2014.

Name of the game this time? Consistency

Posted: 30 Jan 2014 03:04 PM PST

January 31, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

So it was a thrashing. Whichever way one looks at it, and despite the red card for Danny Rose (which one expects to be rescinded), it was the pure class and quality of Manchester City that shown through with aplomb.

The damage could have been worse if Sergio Aguero had not gone off injured, which further points to the clear superiority of play. Despite him coming off at half time, City scored four after the substitution.

But if there is going to be a defeat, best it comes against the best team in the world at this point in time.

Can and will City take this form into their Champions League clash against Barcelona? Or will super tactical Chelsea provide a bigger test on the weekend?
Manchester City are the team to beat and the ultimate test for opponents aspiring to win titles, both domestic and continental.

As for Spurs, a football game has been lost but no reason to panic or doubt that Tim Sherwood is the right man to rebound from this. Manchester United and Arsenal can attest to that.

As the clock ticked away deep into injury time, Eden Hazard squared for ex-West Ham boy Frank Lampard and it was game over for West Ham – not!

Poor Frank had enough energy to put foot to ball but lacked the strength to put power into the shot. Good save from Adrian, or a poor finish from Lampard?

If the clock was rolled back a few seasons, the ball would have been thrashed into the net, hence, this is unfortunately a bad miss from Frank and two valuable points dropped for the Pedantic One.

At Anfield, there was no "Mersey" for Everton, as the Reds were too dominant. Great result and super performance but good timing for Everton to face such a thrashing, too.

The Toffees have been fantastic and will take this defeat as a lesson to restart their season.

It is a good wake-up call for the squad to understand the need to keep lifting their level of performance to truly be a club on the cusp of Europe.

It is commendable how Roberto Martinez has made this Everton side so exciting to watch by encouraging individual flair but occasionally, a lesson, harsh words or the old-fashioned slap in the face can work wonders.

On the other hand, Steven Pienaar might need a call, as he went missing on the day. He was awfully underperforming at the most inopportune moment.

The Red Devils had Robin Van Persie back and they had Juan Mata making his debut against the right opponent, too, in Cardiff City at this point in the season.

It has to be taken as a good result.

Is Manchester United's title defence back on track? Not so fast, but steady steps in the right direction for David Moyes' men.

The Gunners will appreciate the point won at Southampton as it was a delight to watch two teams passing the ball at a good tempo.

A team that has delighted and will continue to delight, Southampton are worth a place in Europe if they can get their consistency going again.

– 30 Januari, 2014.
