Diet high in fruits, vegetables lowers risk of preterm delivery

Preterm delivery is defined as one between 22 and 37 weeks of pregnancy and is associated with adverse health effects.

Building on previous evidence concerning maternal diet and unborn children, researchers in Norway, Iceland and Sweden used data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study to analyse preterm births among 66,000 women between 2002 and 2008. Participants who successfully delivered one baby, were diabetes-free and completed a validated food frequency questionnaire on dietary habits from the first four to five months of pregnancy were included in the study.

Factors believed to affect results include mother's age, education and history of preterm births. Researchers identified three distinct dietary patterns: "prudent", "Western" and "traditional". The "prudent" diet consisted of vegetables, fruits, oils, whole grain cereals, fibre-rich bread, poultry and water. "Western" included sweet and salty snacks, desserts, white bread and processed meat products, while "traditional" featured cooked vegetables, low fat milk, potatoes, fish and gravy.

Out of the 66,000 women, 3,505, or 5.3%, had preterm deliveries. The research team found the "prudent" diet linked to lowered risk of preterm delivery, particularly among women having their first baby. A reduced risk was linked to the "traditional" diet as well.

Researchers note pregnant women should increase their intake of "prudent" diet foods, saying this is more important than a total exclusion of processed food, fast food, snacks and junk food. – AFP/Relaxnews, March 7, 2014.

Queen Park Rangers’ debt soars following relegation

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 08:14 AM PST

March 07, 2014

Championship club Queens Park Rangers' (QPR) debts increased to 177.1 million pounds (RM963 million) from around 91 million pounds a year ago, according to their accounts for the year to May 2013 published today.

The west London club lost 65.4 million pounds last season in its unsuccessful battle against relegation from the Premier League.

QPR spent 41.4 million pounds on transfer fees and saw their wage bill increase by almost 17.0 million pounds to 68 million during the accounting period as they battled to avoid the drop.

QPR have the chance of an immediate return to the Premier League despite a recent loss of form.

They are currently fourth in the Championship and although they are nine points off second-place and an automatic promotion berth they remain in the playoff positions.

Unless they do get promoted they face sanctions from the Football League as Championship clubs losing more than 8 million pounds during the course of this season will be subject to punishments under Financial Fair Play rules.

Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes said in a statement issued by QPR Holdings, the club's parent company and posted with Companies House earlier this week: "Being relegated was obviously not part of our plans, but our focus and determination to achieve our long-term goals has not diminished.

"When, alongside my business partners, I purchased a majority shareholding in the club in August 2011, my goal was to turn QPR into an established Premier League club.

"We are confident that the 2013-14 season will also see the club continue to make progress towards achieving its short, medium and long-term off-pitch target."

Rangers were promoted to the Premier League in 2011 after 17 years out of the top flight and finished 17th in their first season back.

Under manager Mark Hughes they invested heavily in new players in advance of the 2012-13 season but after the Welshman was sacked in November 2012 without a league win in their opening 12 matches, more money was made available in the January 2013 transfer window by which time Harry Redknapp was in charge.

He could not prevent them from the drop and QPR went down with only four wins from their 38 league matches.

The club have substantial financial backing in the form of the Mittal family who own 33%.

Lakshmi Mittal is listed as the 47th richest person in the world by Forbes magazine, with a net worth of US$16 billion (RM52 billion) in October last year. – Reuters, March 6, 2014.

Li Xuerui makes another great escape

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 08:10 AM PST

March 07, 2014

Olympic champion Li Xuerui made a great escape for the second successive day to survive into the quarter-finals of the All England Open championships today.

The top-seeded Chinese player came from a game and 8-13 down against Minatsu Mitani, the world number 16 from Japan, drifting to within three points of defeat before winning 14-21, 21-19, 21-15.

Li had saved a match point yesterday against Busanan Ongbumrungpan, the world number 17 from Thailand, and once again proved resourceful enough to turn the tide against a good opponent who had the momentum in her favour.

"It's a difficult situation when your opponent has a lead," admitted Li. "Both my coach and myself were telling me to keep fighting.

"I also adopted the right tactics to perform at my level. I was able to adjust and find solutions, so in that way I was happy with my performance."

Li's version was that she attacked with more patience in the second half of the match. She also avoided being forced on to the defensive so much by the lively Mitani, and reduced what had been a high error ratio.

From 8-13 she went on a crucial five-point sequence, reaching parity with a superb block to the net from a Mitani smash, and turning defence immediately into an attacking winner.

Once ahead, Li narrowly stayed in front, but for several minutes the match hung in the balance, and it required Li's two best rallies of the match to take her to the relative safety of one game all.

One, which took her to 20-18, saw her increase the pace but still maintain an excellent tight length with lifts to the back; the other, which clinched the game at 21-19, saw her contain with high clears to the back and pick a perfect moment to pound a cross-court smash on to the floor.

Li had more control in the final set, and by the time she had increased a three-point lead to five at 18-13, Mitani's high standard had begun to dip.

"I hope it will be a good experience to have two tough matches," said Li. "It can help me to become psychologically and mentally tougher."

However Li may need to raise her game still further to regain the title she won here two years ago and which she says retains a special place in her heart as a stepping stone to her Olympic triumph at London 2012.

She next plays Sung Ji-Hyun, the fifth-seeded Korean who reached the final of the Denmark Open five months ago.

Sung came back from a three-point deficit in the first game against Lindaweni Fanetri, the world number 18 from Indonesia, to win 23-21, 21-11. – AFP, March 6, 2014.

Singapore’s megachurches move to export lucrative religion

During the service, ushers hand out envelopes for donations, which consume at least a tenth of the salaries of most church members, going to fund different ministries, mission trips and special events.

Welcome to one of Asia's most profitable churches: Singapore's City Harvest.

With a "prosperity gospel" that blends the spiritual and the material, City Harvest and other Pentecostal megachurches in the wealthy Asian city-state have perfected a popular and lucrative model.

Now they are working to export it to the world and turn Singapore into a hub for evangelical Christianity.

"We want to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth," said Pastor Bobby Chaw, City Harvest's missions director.

Evangelising missions by City Harvest, including pop concerts by Sun Ho in China, Taiwan and the United States, have helped it gather followers across Asia and set up 49 affiliate churches in Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and India.

City Harvest – whose founder faces trial, along with five others, on charges of criminal breach of trust and falsifying accounts over the use of nearly S$51 million (RM131.27 million) in church funds – also has a Bible college that trains church leaders from countries such as Norway, Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe.

Last year the founding pastor of another Singapore megachurch, New Creation's Joseph Prince, toured the United States, preaching to a sell-out crowd at Long Beach Arena in Los Angeles and filling the country's largest church, Lakewood in Texas.

Prince's book "The Power of Right Believing" made it to number two on the New York Times' bestseller list in the advice and "how to" category.

Asia is a growth market for Christianity, with the religion estimated to be growing 10 times faster than in Europe, according to the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts.

While the idea of megachurches originated in the United States, some of the largest are in Asia, notably South Korea's Yoido Full Gospel Church, with about 1 million members.

Packaging the traditional biblical message into a more dynamic format of pop-rock music, lively services and social media has lured a new generation of followers and turned the churches into major enterprises.

New Creation, which says it has a congregation of 30,000, collected S$75.5 million in tithes in 2012, while City Harvest took in S$38.6 million in 2009, accounts filed with Singapore's Commissioner of Charities show.

"Whatever method that can most effectively convey the message to our generation, we will do it," said Chaw, who is also the vice chairman of City Harvest's management board.

City Harvest, which says its congregation numbered nearly 20,000 in 2012, with about 62% single, ventured into the entertainment industry after seeing how enthusiastically Chinese-speaking youth in Asia responded to Mandarin pop music from Taiwan.

The church's Crossover Project led Sun Ho to collaborate with Asian stars such as Jay Chou and she broke into the US market under the guidance of producer David Foster, producer-songwriter Wyclef Jean and other veterans.

With a wealth-affirming model and efforts to engage the young, fast-growing Pentecostal megachurches have helped to dilute Buddhism as Singapore's traditionally dominant religion.

The most recent census showed the proportion of Christians rose 18.3% in 2010 from 14.6% in 2000, while the number of Buddhists fell to 33.3% from 42.5%.

Rolland Teo, 25, whose family is Buddhist, said his view of religion as "very static" changed when he joined City Harvest.

"It was something more dynamic, more relational," Teo said. "This was something I couldn't find in my parents' beliefs."

City Harvest's Crossover Project is at the centre of charges that Ho and five other officials financed his wife's singing career by funneling church funds of S$24 million into sham investments and then used S$26.6 million more to cover up the deals.

Ho and the others deny the charges. Ho's wife is not on trial and has resumed her executive duties at the church.

In South Korea, David Yong-gi Cho, Ho's spiritual mentor and founder of Yoido Full Gospel Church, was recently found guilty of embezzling $14 million (RM45.6 million) in church donations to buy stocks owned by his son, at four times their market value.

Megachurches dismiss accusations of being wealth-obsessed, although Chaw has said that "prosperity is a byproduct of obeying God's commandments".

Critics say wealth is not necessarily a bad thing but they decry selfish enrichment at the expense of helping others.

"The prosperity gospel is a very big movement, a very visible movement, that doesn't represent what I believe to be biblical Christianity," said Paul Choo, founding pastor at Gospel Light Christian Church.

But a growing number of people in Singapore have found an affinity with the megachurch doctrine of faith entwined with wealth and personal well-being.

"That's quite attractive to many socially mobile Singaporeans who, in going up the class strata, do look for some moral bearings," said Terence Chong, a researcher at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

Tithing – the donation of 10% of income to the church – is assumed by some to be a way of "buying" God's love. But New Creation member Jared Asalli and others say it is a way of thanking God.

Either way, the practice helps swell megachurch coffers.

City Harvest raised S$22.7 million with its Building Fund Campaign, helping it to buy a stake of 39.2% in the venue for its services, Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, for S$97.8 million in 2012.

New Creation's Miracle Seed event raised S$21 million in one day, contributing to the S$348 million it spent on building the 5,000-seat Star Performing Arts Centre, one of four venues where it holds services.

"I don't think there's been any era as materialistic as this one," said Choo of Gospel Light Christian Church. "If it promises wealth, it will have some ready audience." – Reuters, March 6, 2014.

March 06, 2014

Crime caper "American Hustle" and financial greed tale "The Wolf of Wall Street" each landed eight nominations for the MTV Movie Awards today, edging out dystopian saga "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and comedy "We're the Millers."

"Hustle" and "Wolf," which each went home from Sunday's Oscars empty handed, will have a shot at redemption at the unbuttoned MTV event that hands out golden, popcorn-shaped trophies in categories like best kiss and best fight scene.

The fan-voted awards will be hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on April 13 and televised on MTV, a unit of Viacom Inc.

"American Hustle" stars Amy Adams (pic), Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, who each picked up nominations in top acting categories while Adams and Christian Bale picked up a nod for best on-screen duo in the film.

Oscar best picture winner "12 Years a Slave" earned four nominations, while outer space thriller "Gravity" scored a single nod for Sandra Bullock as best actress, after winning seven Academy Awards, the most this year.

Nominees for best movie, the only category in which voting will continue during the broadcast, include "12 Years a Slave", "American Hustle", fantasy film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "The Wolf of Wall Street".

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who both won Oscars for their performances in AIDS drama "Dallas Buyers Club," earned nominations together for best on-screen duo and separately for best on-screen transformation.

The annual awards, which honour-hit movies that might have been overlooked by the Oscars and Golden Globes, serve as a lead-in to the summer movie season and will include preview clips from would-be summertime Hollywood blockbusters.

This year's odd-ball categories include best shirtless performance, best "#WTF moment" and best cameo performance.

The 15-actor fight scene in comedy "Anchorman 2" earned a nomination for best fight scene while Lawrence and Adams' unscripted lip-lock in "American Hustle" picked up a nod in the best kiss category.

Former boy band the Backstreet Boys also scored a nomination for best musical moment in apocalyptic satire "This Is the End," and octogenarian comic Joan Rivers notched a nomination for best cameo for her part in superhero blockbuster "Iron Man 3". – Reuters, March 6, 2014.

US author George Saunders wins Story Prize for short fiction

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 12:43 AM PST

March 06, 2014

American author George Saunders won the Story Prize for his best-selling short story collection "Tenth of December," which has been lauded for its formal innovation and keen eye to people's darker aspects.

Saunders, 55, topped finalists Andrea Barrett's "Archangel" collection and Rebecca Lee's "Bobcat" for the $20,000 (RM65, 450) prize, the richest among annual literary fiction honours in the United States.

Saunders, who lives in New York and teaches creative writing at Syracuse University, was given the award at a ceremony at the New School in New York yesterday.

"George Saunders offers a vision and version of our world that takes into account the serious menace all around us without denying the absurd pleasures that punctuate life," the judges said in a statement. "This book is very funny and very sad."

The author's previous collection of short stories, 2006's "In Persuasion Nation," was also a finalist for the award.

Saunders has authored five additional books and was included on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world last year.

Past winners of the Story Prize, which is underwritten by the Mississippi-based Chisholm Foundation, include Claire Vaye Watkins, Mary Gordon, Jim Shepard, Tobias Wolff and Steven Millhauser. – Reuters, March 6, 2014.

Newsweek’s print revival starts tomorrow

Newsweek magazine is set to return to print starting tomorrow in the United States and Europe. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, March 6, 2014.Newsweek magazine is set to return to print starting tomorrow in the United States and Europe. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, March 6, 2014.Newsweek magazine, online only since the end of 2012, will return to print starting tomorrow in the United States and Europe.

Parent company IBT Media is taking a gamble in re-launching the once-iconic news weekly, which has nearly disappeared in the face of serious financial difficulties.

In crafting its print resurrection, the New York-based online media group, led by French businessman Etienne Uzac, has adopted a strategy that goes against current practices.

The new magazine will seek to position itself as a high-end product, in particular with higher quality paper and printing than its competitors.

"We'll deliver the quality of a monthly every week," said editor in chief Jim Impoco.

But the flip side of the high-end aspirations is a price well above other news magazines. Newsweek will be sold for $7.99 (RM26.14) a copy in the United States.

And an annual subscription – including both the paper edition and unlimited access to the website – will cost around $150 in the United States, some five times more than the cost for rival Time.

In Europe, where the print edition had not stopped, the price will vary by country.

IBT Media is planning to put out 70,000 copies of its first issue tomorrow, a spokesperson for the weekly told AFP. Down the line, the magazine said it aims to have 100,000 copies in circulation in the United States and another 100,000 in the rest of the world.

"This is an extension of what we are already producing with an e-magazine, Etienne Uzac said in December.

Impoco "has put in place and will continue to put in place a strong team. We will do investigative reporting. We will go into depth in some fields," added the businessman, who did not respond to interview requests yesterday.

Currently, Newsweek employs 29 journalists full time.

The return of Newsweek's print edition caps a turbulent few years for the title, which was first published in 1933. At the start of the 1990s, the magazine had a worldwide circulation of 3.3 million readers, but sales declined steadily over the next two decades, slipping to 1.5 million by 2010.

After changing hands several times, the title was bought last summer by IBT Media. – AFP, March 6, 2014.

Newsflash: Law firms want to make more money

Posted: 05 Mar 2014 06:26 PM PST

March 06, 2014

Ask Lord Bobo is a weekly column by LoyarBurok where all your profound, abstruse, erudite, hermetic, recondite, sagacious, and other thesaurus-described queries are answered. Free Your Mind!

Dear Lord Bobo, does a law firm have the right to request a lawyer who is leaving the firm to refund the annual Practising Certificate fee which has been paid for the remainder of the year? (EE, via email.)

It has been said that god created the devil so that men wouldn't blame Her (yes, god is female –– that's common knowledge, no?) for everything, and that the devil created lawyers so that men wouldn't blame Him for everything. That is true.

Dear EE, if it's not already blatantly obvious, law firms are not charities. Most law firms are partnerships, and as made clear by the Partnership Act 1961, a partnership is a relationship which subsists between persons carrying on business in common with a view of profit.

Newsflash –– lawyers are greedy. That's right, and the big-shot partners in law firms ultimately care only about the moolah. It's all about the money, money, money.

There is a figure to everything, including your annual Practicing Certificate ("PC"). Your annual PC costs around RM1,000.00 to renew. This is a cost which law firms normally bear every year in exchange for your loyalty for the rest of the year. Whether you have to pay back this cost if you decide to leave (or are made to leave) during the year are dictated by the terms of your employment contract (oh, did you not read your employment contract? That's bad, being a lawyer and all).

Assuming your employment contract is silent (shame on the firm!) and you leave during the year, the law firm which paid for the renewal of your annual PC would normally demand that you reimburse them for the cost incurred, prorated according to the number of months you worked for them.

To be honest, this makes perfect sense, and seems fair. Why would a law firm bear the cost for the period you are not working for them? This is particularly logical if you move on to work for another law firm.

Come on EE, don't be naïve. There is a cold, oppressive beast that lies at the heart of every law firm, and it stirs at scent of money. You're only useful to the law firm if you remained loyal. It's nothing personal, just good business.

Lord Bobo hopes that you are not fooled by that benevolent image law firms paint for themselves, celebrating the false empowerment of their employees or the self-proclaimed good work they have done for the community. These are for the purposes of branding –– it is bait for unsuspecting victims. You would rather engage St Peter for business rather than Judas Iscariot, wouldn't you?

If law firms are truly about empowerment, then as a lawyer ask yourself –– why are you getting a fixed salary instead of a share of the fees? Find out the total value of brief you are working on, and compare it with the remuneration you receive in return. How come you don't get paid more if the firm receives a multi-million dollar brief? Why is there such an enormous gap between the amount the law firm earns, and the amount you earn.

The law firm structure is a scam. Even the partnership structure is a joke. "Salaried partners" or "non-equity partners" are still just employees and not true partners –– whatever complicated remuneration model the equity partners put in place to appease these junior partners will still result in them taking home only a small fraction of the fees they earn for the firm. Why is that?

Pause for a moment and think about flexi-hours, bonuses, medical benefits, and professional development –– are these merely sweeteners to mask the oppression, the undeniable truth that you are not being remunerated equitably? Think about it.

The next time you meet a senior or equity partner of a medium or big law firm (hey, you young lawyers working in medium or big law firms should try this), ask him about career paths, fixed-scale salaries, or the partnership remuneration formula. Then watch him squirm and wiggle and answer in code and half-truths.

Once you have answered all these questions, you will find out the main reason why 90% of the law firms in Malaysia are small firms. Many lawyers inevitably leave and set up shop on their own.

Sadly though, most of the partners in these small firms, having been oppressed by the equity partners from their previous firms, adopt the very same model of oppression they were subjected to once their small firm grows. The oppressed becomes the oppressors, perpetuating the cycle of oppression.

Feeling disillusioned yet? Aren't law firms about helping those in need, defending the downtrodden and marginalised? Surely it cannot be all about profit? Sadly,no.

Section 42 (1) (a) of the Legal Profession Act 1976 states that the purpose of the Malaysian Bar shall be to uphold the cause of justice without regard to its own interests or that of its members, uninfluenced by fear or favour. But what Section 42 does not state is that lawyers should do it for free. And they don't. More often than not, Section 42 is merely treated as a nice adornment to the false pomp and prestige of the legal profession. Lord Bobo is appalled at such sorry state of affairs, and you should be too.

The legal profession is oppressive and ruthless. Whether you want to perpetuate the cycle of oppression or embark on a path of liberation depends entirely on you. If you decide on the latter, then begin by accepting that no one owes you a living, nor do you to others.

Recognise that everyone should be equitably remunerated and there should not be too big an earnings gap between the firm and you –– or if the firm is yours, then between you and your lawyers.

Understand that you have a duty to society as a lawyer, because you are in a better position than most others to help the downtrodden and marginalised.

Law firms may think that they control you simply because they pay your wages or the cost of renewing your annual PC. Prove them wrong, go forth and start liberating yourself.

Start by paying for your own annual PC and be your own person! Oh, you don't want to? You want the firm to pay? Then stop complaining about having to reimburse the firm.

If you're not willing to pay the price for a little bit of freedom, then get comfortable in those chains and continue living as a slave to the wage. Free your mind!

Although Lord Bobo already knows your question before you even knew you had a question, as a practical display of your true desire to have your query answered, His Supreme Eminenceness has graciously allowed you to communicate your questions by either emailing asklordbobo@loyarburok.com or tweeting your question, mentioning @LoyarBurok and using the hashtag #AskLordBobo. Now, what the hell are you waiting for? Hear This and Tremblingly Obey (although trembling is optional if you are somewhere very warm)! – March 6, 2014.

– 6 Mac, 2014.

Bernas diarah hentikan kadar pemotongan tinggi hasil padi

Posted: 06 Mar 2014 02:27 AM PST

March 06, 2014

– 6 Mac, 2014.
