Diet soda could be causing you to overeat, shows study

After looking at national consumption patterns of diet beverages and calorie intake, researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that overweight and obese adults who drink diet beverages consume more calories from food than obese adults who drink regular sodas and other sugary beverages.

The results come as consumption rates of diet soda in the US have seen a dramatic spike over the last few decades, with 3% of the population consuming diet drinks in 1965, up to 20% today, authors note.

Data was compiled from national health surveys conducted between 1999 to 2010. The results were published in The American Journal of Public Health last week.

The findings corroborate previous research that found artificial sweeteners may cause greater activation of the brain's reward sensors, disrupt appetite control and cause people to increase their overall food intake.

Another study published last year in General Dentistry also provided compelling evidence for avoiding diet soda, after researchers said that the consumption of artificially sweetened drinks is as damaging to the teeth as the use of crack cocaine and meth. - AFP/Relaxnews, January 22, 2014.

A bottle of malt whisky has gone under the hammer in Hong Kong for the record-breaking sum of HK$4.9 million (RM2.09 million), an auction house says.

The Macallan 'M' Decanter 6-litre Imperiale attracted global interest at a Sotheby's auction, the firm said in a statement which identified the buyer only as an Asian private collector.

The former British colony has become a hub for auctions of collectibles and rare items ranging from diamonds to stamps, thanks to growing wealth in China and other parts of Asia.

An Asian buyer purchased a rare Leica camera, one of only four of its kind in the world, for US$620,000 (RM2.06 million) at a Hong Kong auction in November.

Sotheby's said the bottle sold on Saturday broke the record for any single malt whisky bottle sold at auction, surpassing the US$460,000 paid in New York in 2010. – AFP Relaxnews, January 21, 2014.

Gervinho sees Roma past Juventus in Cup quarters

Roma, defeated in last year's final by city rivals Lazio, will find out their last four rivals following the quarter-final tie between Napoli and Lazio on January 29.

Roma had suffered a 3-0 league defeat to Juventus a fortnight ago and with the hosts losing last season's final to Lazio, coach Rudi Garcia fielded a full-strength side at a packed Olympic Stadium.

Juve counterpart Antonio Conte, meanwhile, took the opposite approach.

He rested keeper Gianluigi Buffon, a number of midfield stars including Paul Pogba, Kwadwo Asamoah and Stephan Lichsteiner and strikers Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente.

In the end, Conte's strategy backfired as Roma's far more enterprising approach paid dividends.

Captain Francesco Totti told Rai Sport: "We wanted this win at all costs... tonight we matched a great Juve side."

Asked who Roma would prefer to meet in the final four, Totti added: "That's their problem, not ours."

Conte claimed he was "happy with my players' performance" and said he had no regrets about replacing his top players with those who often warm the substitutes bench.

"The Cup is a competition like any other but we've always seen it as an opportunity to give certain players time on the pitch, that's nothing new for us.

"We need to have all our players on form for the championship and for the Europa League."

Roma dominated the early exchanges but it took until late in the half for them to threaten the Juventus goal.

Vasilis Torosidis whipped in a superb curling ball at the far post with which Kevin Strootman, at full stretch, narrowly failed to make contact.

Totti then saw his volleyed snapshot go wide, while Alessandro Florenzi failed to reach Gervinho's ball when it was fired across the box.

Juve had the ball in the net shortly after the restart when Federico Peloso headed home from close range, but his effort was ruled out after Mauricio Isla's curling cross from deep on the right was ruled to have gone out of play.

Florenzi was next to come close with a header from Torosidis which took Juve's number two keeper Marco Storari by surprise but the second half was nowhere near as productive as the first.

As the game stalled, Garcia replaced Florenzi with Miralem Pjanic while Conte attempted to waken his team from their relative slumber by replacing striker Sebastian Giovinco with Llorente on 77 minutes.

Garcia's switch was to pay dividends, Pjanic reaching the ball, before Andrea Barzagli, to stride forward and feed Strootman deep on the left.

The Dutchman's cross arrived in the box and Gervinho did well to tap the ball home with the side of his right boot in the 79th minute.

Roma were fired up and Totti delivered the ball for Gervinho which the striker missed, and minutes later the Ivorian sent a low, weak shot into the arms of Storari after late substitute Adem Ljajic had carried the ball from midfield.

Pjanic then came close with a shot in injury time, while Juve's frustrations boiled over with Chilean Arturo Vidal cautioned for dissent.

Benzema edges Real Madrid towards Cup semis

Karim Benzema got the only goal of the game as he headed home Alvaro Arbeloa's cross on 25 minutes.

Espanyol were indebted to goalkeeper Kiko Casilla for not having an even greater deficit to overcome next Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu as he made a string of fine saves to keep his side in the tie.

However, they should have snatched a draw on the night as Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba fired straight at Iker Casillas when played through on goal eight minutes from time.

That save extended Casillas personal record of not having conceded for the last 592 minutes in which he has kept goal and Real boss Carlo Ancelotti lauded the Spanish captain's professionalism having been dropped from La Liga duty in favour of Diego Lopez action for over a year.

"I congratulate Iker because he is doing very well, he deserves his record for his professionalism," he said.

"He made a save at the end and has played very well in all the games in which he has played. We have a lot of games at the moment and so both (goalkeepers) are playing the same number of games and Iker is as important as Diego Lopez is."

Ancelotti had named a very strong starting line-up and was rewarded with a commanding display from his side as they extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 games.

And the Italian was delighted to take a lead into the second-leg despite holding on a little towards the end.

"This is the quarter-finals of the Cup so you have to play your strongest team and it is clear that the tie is still alive.

"We only struggled in the last 20 minutes. I thought the team did very well and played with quality, rhythm and intensity.

"We kept a clean sheet, the team played well and I am happy. It is normal when you miss a lot of opportunities to score the second goal then you will suffer a bit towards the end."

Cristiano Ronaldo had his side's first serious effort on goal with a low drive that Casilla did very well to turn onto the inside of the post.

Madrid did take the lead midway through the half as Gareth Bale flicked on Arbeloa's cross and Benzema powered home a header for his 14th goal of the season.

Casilla then saved from Benzema and a Bale free-kick, whilst Angel di Maria ballooned another clear opening well over the bar.

Espanyol posed more of a threat at the beginning of the second period as Garcia curled an effort inches wide of Casillas' right-hand post.

However, the visitors should have left Barcelona with a more substantial lead as Casilla denied Arbeloa twice from close range before Benzema forced the keeper into another smart save low to his left when he should have squared for the completely unmarked Ronaldo in the middle.

And Madrid were nearly made to pay as Casillas had to make a brave block from Cordoba before Marcelo cleared off the line following a goalmouth scramble in the latter stages to seal the victory and a sixth consecutive clean sheet for Los Blancos. - AFP, January 22, 2014.

Damascus residents pray for ‘miracle’ at Geneva

Ahead of the talks, the army's bombardment of rebel-held suburbs of the city, and opposition mortar fire on its centre, have been less frequent.

And in the streets of the Old City and elsewhere, there is a rare semblance of normality.

Citizens go about their daily lives, youngsters take photos in front of the famed Ummayad mosque, and a vendor peddles souvenir pictures of President Bashar al-Assad and his ally Hassan Nasrallah, head of Lebanon's Hezbollah group.

But weariness shows on people's faces when they are asked about a solution to the conflict that has ravaged their country for nearly three years, killing more than 130,000 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights NGO.

"Geneva? It would take a divine miracle for it to succeed," said Akram, who sells beans in the historic neighbourhood of Bab Touma.

"Neither one side nor the other wants to make concessions," he added, referring to the regime and to the opposition which voted on Saturday to attend the talks.

Assad's government has said regularly that his departure from office will not be on the table, even though this is the opposition's main demand.

Akram's hopes are more simple.

"What we want before anything else is security. If there isn't a ceasefire, we'll never get anywhere," he said as pro-regime militiamen patrolled nearby.

"Let them talk for months, but I want to sleep in peace," the 35-year-old added, bemoaning the economic ruin the war has brought.

"We used to export wheat and flour. Now we're importing it from Lebanon and Iran."

Bab Touma, a majority Christian district, is now home to Syrians of all faiths who have come from across the war-torn country.

"I don't have much hope," said Maher, a Sunni Muslim medical engineering student who arrived five months ago from the northern town of Raqa, which is controlled by jihadists.

'Too much pain'

The talks "will end without results, particularly if the solution is imposed by the West," he added in particular reference to France and the United States, which back the opposition.

His girlfriend Maha, a timid brunette, is even more pessimistic.

"Syria will never go back to how it was. I don't think there will be reconciliation because there has been too much pain."

Omar, a baker in Bab Touma, left the Palestinian Yarmuk camp south of the city about a year ago.

He is delighted to have escaped the camp, which is mostly controlled by the opposition and has been under a regime siege that led to deaths from starvation among remaining residents.

"We are exhausted. We really need a miracle at Geneva II," said the 31-year-old former accountant, who sports a neatly trimmed beard.

"The two sides have to put aside their egos. If not, peace is impossible," he added, as he prepared "manoushe" flatbreads.

While many Damascus residents want nothing more than a return to normal life, others trumpet the regime line.

"We hope for victory for us, for our president!" shouted one passer-by in the central Marjeh neighbourhood of the capital, where many displaced families now live in budget hotels.

"Everything will be over when the terrorists leave the country," said Amjad, another former Yarmuk resident, echoing the regime term for the rebels.

Others questioned the role of the National Coalition, which is based in Turkey and is due to represent the opposition at the peace talks.

"Who are our leaders going to talk to?" asked Malek, in the working-class district of Sarouja, near Marjeh.

"The Coalition doesn't represent anything and the (rebels) are completely divided, so why should we negotiate with them?"

Hussam, a drama student having a drink in a pub in the upscale Rawda neighbourhood, will be watching the talks closely.

"If I don't feel like anything is happening after the conference, I'm going to leave Syria," he said. – AFP, January 21, 2014.

Rwanda in diplomatic trouble 20 years after genocide

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 03:59 AM PST

January 21, 2014

As Rwanda marks 20 years since its 1994 genocide, the government is seeking to stress the strides the country has made since those dark days, despite international concern over its hardline leader.

Fiercely proud of its legacy, Kigali is displaying a country at peace, enjoying some of the best security on the continent and hailed by global financial institutions for its pro-reform, business-friendly agenda.

But the seemingly hardening stance of strongman Paul Kagame, Rwanda's president, is casting a shadow over the country's relations with the outside world.

Accused of backing rebel warlords who recruit child soldiers in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and suspected of eliminating exiled dissidents, Kagame now appears to be suffering a backlash.

On January 1st, Patrick Karegeya, a one-time close ally of Kagame turned fierce critic, was found dead in a luxury Johannesburg hotel.

South African police found a bloodied towel and a rope, and said Karegeya might have been strangled.

Critics of the regime immediately pointed the finger at Kigali, and Kagame responded with an ambiguous, hawkish tone.

Without mentioning the Karegeya case, the president simply said that "treason brings consequences".

"Anyone who betrays our cause or wishes our people ill will fall victim. What remains to be seen is how you fall victim," Kagame said.

His comments prompted a surprisingly stiff rebuke from Washington, which had been a staunch supporter of Kagame ever since his rebel army defeated Hutu extremists and ended the genocide of the Tutsi minority in 1994.

"We condemn the murder of former Rwandan government official, Colonel Patrick Karegeya, in South Africa, where he lived in exile," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a press briefing last week, adding the US welcomes South Africa's "prompt and thorough investigation" into Karegeya's death.

Psaki also said the US was "troubled by the succession of what appear to be politically motivated murders of prominent Rwandan exiles", and said Kagame's comments were a cause for "deep concern".

Rwanda 'won't be lectured'

The criticism of Kigali comes amid increasing unease in Washington, which had last year suspended some of its aid to Rwanda over its support for the M23, a rebel group based over the border in the resource-rich east of the DR Congo.

Rwanda denied backing the group, but diplomats say it was subjected to intense pressure to back off and the M23 were subsequently defeated.

"The US used to be one of the biggest supporters of the Rwandan president," said Paul Simon Handy of the South Africa-based Institute for Security Studies (ISS), adding that Washington liked Kagame's "capacity to manage, to govern, to take Rwanda to the next step."

"It's clear that the Obama administration has a completely different approach (to Rwanda) from those of the Clinton and Bush administrations," Handy told AFP, saying the current administration "seems less inclined to tolerate human rights abuses".

A European diplomat said there had been a reluctance to criticise Kagame, mainly because of "Western guilt for having failed to prevent the genocide and essentially having stood by and watched" while close to a million of Rwanda's ethnic Tutsis were slaughtered by Hutu extremists.

"You cannot dispute that Kagame has also done a lot of positive things for Rwanda. His record on corruption and economic reforms are an example to the rest of the continent," said the diplomat, who asked not to be named.

"He's also brought peace and stability to Rwanda, that's undeniable. The problem is that there are certain aspects of him that are making us feel, well, deeply uneasy."

But in Rwanda, reaction to criticism is increasingly one of defiance – with the country signalling it does not take kindly to criticism from an international community that stood by and did nothing while the genocide was in full swing.

"It's not the first time that a US official tries to lecture an African Head of State," was the response from Olivier Nduhungirehe from the Rwandan mission to the UN.

He added that the US should be more "concerned about Al-Qaeda" and also let Rwanda deal with 'terror' threats.

Rwandan Foreign Minister, Louise Mushikiwabo, dismissed the idea of a deterioration in US-Rwandan relations.

"Rwanda and the United States have enjoyed strong ties that cut across the political spectrum, especially after the 1994 genocide .... Of course, as in any relationship, there are ups and downs, but we always manage to work them out," she said.

Kagame himself also appears unrattled. Asked by the French weekly Jeune Afrique who killed Karegeya, he replied bluntly that the answer was of no importance to him.

"For those who ask that question, even though they know perfectly well that this type of individual stood for violence and terrorism, I have this answer: terrorism has a price, treason has a price. People are killed the way they themselves killed," Kagame told the magazine.

"Each man gets the death he deserves," he said. – AFP, January 21, 2014.

January 21, 2014

Hollywood actor Johnny Depp (pic) and the actress Amber Heard are engaged to be married, People magazine reported.

"They couldn't be happier to be engaged and excited to share the rest of their lives together. Amber has really taken well to the kids and really enjoys spending time with them," the People report said, citing an unnamed source.

Representatives for Depp, 50, and Heard, 27, did not immediately confirm the report.

Depp, a veteran whose diverse career includes "Edward Scissorhands", and the recent "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, was previously in a 14-year relationship with French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis.

They have two children and were not married, ending their relationship in 2012.

When the couple separated, entertainment media speculated Depp may have had a relationship with Heard, at the time a co-star in the film "The Rum Diary".

Heard is known for the film "Zombieland". She has spoken of her bisexuality and was recently in a four-year relationship with photographer Tasya van Ree. They split in 2012 around the same time as Depp and Paradis.

Depp was married in the 1980s to Lori Anne Allison. He also dated actress Winona Ryder and British supermodel Kate Moss.

Book Review – In the Spirit of St Francis & The Sultan

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 04:29 PM PST

BY EMMANUEL SURENDRA
January 21, 2014

What do you get when you construct a book based on limited historical data? A sticky venture, or "In the Spirt of St Francis & The Sultan" by George Dardess and Marvin L. Krier Mich.

The issue is not the book's subject matter – Christian-Muslim relations is a tedious affair after all – but the fact that history divulges only this much: That in 1219, during the Fifth Crusade, Francis of Assisi and a companion met the Ayyubid sultan of Egypt, Malik al-Kamil, hoping to convert the sultan or win martyrdom in the attempt.

The visit is reported in contemporary Crusader sources and in the earliest biographies of Francis, but no exact information is given as to what exactly transpired during the encounter, except that the sultan graciously received the monk, and that Francis preached to the Saracens without effect, returning unharmed to the Crusader camp. No contemporary Arab source speaks of the visit.

Why lollop on such a premise is befuddling. It is not that the authors are amateurs; Dardess especially has written two books on comparative religion between Christianity and Islam, and has a working knowledge of Arabic.

But with words like "imagine", "guess", and "we can't know for sure" peppered throughout the book, and a phrase in the preface taken from John Tolan's "Saint Francis and the Sultan: The Curious History of a Christian-Muslim Encounter" - "Each interpreter reads into [the] encounter his or her own preoccupations" - Dardess and Krier Mich have successfully stretched the subject too far.

Content-wise, the book's subheading makes its aim manifest: Catholics and Muslims working together for the common good. It is the kind of work that presents two sides of the debate, in the vein of Badru Kateregga and David Shenk's "A Muslim and A Christian in Dialogue".

So, there are a lot of references to historical events, the Bible, and the Quran. The emphasis, however, is social justice from a Catholic and Muslim perspective – the "common good".  Worth reading are the book's final two chapters, which provide practical analyses and models for applying social justice.

Not forgetting, the title in typical academic fashion has a preface and introduction to set readers into the mood of what is to come, and endnotes and a selected bibliography. While the bibliography does list some common works, some crucial ones are missing.

The book's major snag, however, is its hermeneutics. And, just like how they have stretched the Sultan-Francis account, Dardess and Krier Mich have done exactly the same with their treatment of passages from the Bible and the Quran.

For instance, the feeding of the 5,000 in the third chapter is really a story about the veracity of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. Not as what the authors say: a story about sharing.

As for the Quranic passages, some of its references are just confounding. Its treatment of "jihad" in chapter four warrants questioning as the author fails to develop the role of non-Muslims in the bigger picture of Muslim social justice. And this selective usage of Quranic verses throughout the book makes it really difficult for the newbie to understand what on earth those passages are saying.

Interestingly, this title is published by Orbis Books, a reputable Catholic publication. A seminal work that comes to mind is Kosuke Koyama's "Water Buffalo Theology", a book on the outworking of the Christian faith in a Thai-Buddhist context.

"In the Spirit of St. Francis & The Sultan" sadly does not reflect the publisher's reputation.

It goes without saying that this book does little to help steer advocates or lovers of Christian-Muslim relations in the right direction. Solid reads would be Kateregga and Shenk's work mentioned earlier, Hugh Goddard's "A History of Christian-Muslim Relations", and Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad's "Christian-Muslim Encounters".

The Malaysian edition of George Dardess and Marvin L. Krier Mich's "In the Spirt of St Francis & The Sultan" is published by The Other Press and priced at RM33. The book is available at all major bookstores, and can be purchased online here. - January 21, 2014.

Social media: connectivity, information and privacy

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 07:49 PM PST

January 21, 2014

Rushdi believes that a change agent must tell the truth to a benevolent dictator, religious hardliner, and compassionately connect with youth and have nots.

"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tired into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly." – Martin Luther King Jr.

Has social media made us better connected and more informed? Yes, but is that a good development? It seems, for most, an affirmative "yes," and, for small minority, a hind-sight "no."

The social media is broken down for two kinds of people, and they often overlap: professionals and networking, and personal connections. To date, I have exited from Facebook and Instagram, but I have expanded further into Linkedin and Twitter.

Why?

Facebook

I, like hundreds of millions of others, was curious, intrigued and fascinated with the power of connectivity, be it from school days, early employment, crossing paths with people from parties, travel, conferences, and so on.

Or, put more eloquently by Herman Melville:

"We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibres connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibres, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects."

Thus, it was hoped that strangers would became acquaintances, and some of them would eventually became our friends. Thus, it was about, at one level, connecting the dots to paint a picture of our own personality and attributes and link to our 'mirror others.'

To make a long story short, I joined Facebook (FB) in the early days, but did not utilise per its "intended purpose". I as dormant "user" eventually left FB, a difficult task in itself, because there were an increasing number of people, from the unsavoury to the unsolicited, that wanted to be friends, but I was not willing to reciprocate.

Maybe I did not give it a patient chance, but I feel I have not missed out, yet!

In hindsight, I realised that I valued my (and my family's) privacy very much, and was not willing to open it up to the virtual community. Yes, there are fail-safe hurdles on FB, but if hackers can break into bank accounts, credit card databases of retail outlets, then it may also be "hackable". But, I suspect I am an insignificant minority as

FB has about one billion users.

It would be interesting to be part of focus group for FB to study people like me, as millions have allegedly left FB, to see if "FB2.0" would be more appropriate!

Instagram

"Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language." Walt Disney.

I grew up with hard copy pictures, where the film was printed at local film store, and the "good" ones were eventually included in the family album. The album was easily accessible off-the-family shelf or from the storage room, and viewed at gatherings, etc. We were careful to take pictures as the film development costs were not free!

I tried Instagram, and, initially, it was interesting to post and view, but eventually deleted the account, because:

1. Felt the pressure to continue posting pictures in an era of "serial picture takers and posters," via the iPhones, to be relevant. Furthermore, one also needs a "good eye" to capture the essence of the subject in the picture, as its telling a story, and I wear glasses!

2. Got tired of looking at pictures of food and eating habits, holiday pictures, time-lapse (seems daily) kid pictures, family and friend pictures, etc. The novelty was diluted by the excessiveness! One day, I hope understand why people are serial posters of pictures! Is it burning desire to share? Fill a vacuum? Keep attention and stay relevant?

3. Valued my privacy. Yes, only accepted people can view the pictures, but some pictures are not for even friends. For example, even for my What's App picture, I have to re-think before posting pictures of myself or family.

I, probably a very small minority, view photographs as per Parveen Sharma:

"Good photographs are taken not with the camera. Good photographs are taken with Mind, Soul, Eyes, and Imagination where Eyes like a shutter, Mind like a lens, Imagination like an object and Soul like a canvas."

LinkedIn & Twitter

"Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect." Chief Seattle.

LinkedIn has been one of the best investments of my time, as like-minded industry 'connections' post informative articles, a great source for learning. But, more importantly, professionally connecting to others, including groups, is an important way to build an electronic rolodex, which gets updated by the connection!

Beyond article and connecting, the value for LinkedIn for me has been posting my articles. I have columns in Dubai and Malaysia, and posting the published articles on Linkedin has allowed for a wider target sharing and dissemination. The comments by connections, unlike, say, Yahoo articles, which may have personal attacks, are generally constructive and welcoming.

The only two issues I have with LinkedIn are the unsolicited endorsements and request for opinions. Yes, I am connected to these people, but, outside of a handful people, I have never professionally worked with them! Furthermore, there may be an implied request to also endorse the endorser, but I have never endorsed (non-work connection) as one's reputation is on the line, much like a letter of recommendation.

For someone like me, Linkedin is my de facto Facebook!

Twitter is one of the most important contributions and developments in social media, and its recent oversubscribed IPO is proof positive by millions!  For people like me that read a lot about world events, politics, human interest and finance, time and information are two very precious commodities.

Today, there is information overload, be it the message or messenger, and being able to fine tune, whom to follow, is the ultimate customization. The beauty of Twitter is the ability of tweets to convey news, information, and analysis in 140 characters. It has allowed me to "de-couple," about 70%, from newspapers/magazines.

The challenge of Twitter for non-politicians, athletes, entertainers, billionaires, etc., is being relevant, otherwise people "un-follow." Many people retweet and favourite, which works and has an important benefit. For me, the value of Twitter is tweeting about variety of topics, from Islamic finance to the halal industry to politics to human interest to human rights and so on. Thus, it allows me to be the "talk show host and investigative journalist" with editorials.

Conclusion

The social media invasion will not go away, and will only increase it reach, breadth and depth going forward. It has made and launched (and killed) careers and made ordinary people celebrities (and vice versa), hence, an access point to careers, fame and fortune.

It is also the ultimate invasion of privacy, but some people chose to use social media surgically like a knife to make needful incisions of needful information and editorial dissemination! – January 21, 2014.

Apakah PKR boleh mengelak episod Zaid Ibrahim berulang?

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 04:38 PM PST

January 21, 2014

Siapa lagi Mr U Turn kalau bukan Khalid?

Jadi Azmin bakal dicabar siapa?

- 21 Januari, 2014.
