Anxiety, over-eagerness caused false start, says Bolt

BRUSSELS, Sept 14 — Anxiety and over-eagerness led to Usain Bolt's false start in the 100 metres final at the world championships last month, the world record holder said today.

The Olympic champion, set to run the 100 metres at the Diamond League final in Brussels on Friday, was disqualified in the world championship final in Daegu after leaving the blocks too early.

"I was a little bit off. I wasn't really myself. Anxiety got the better of me. I really wanted to go. I really felt like I wanted to run. I've never felt like that before at a race," Bolt told a news conference.

"But I think the reason is all season I'd been struggling, working hard to get back into shape and I felt so great for the first time this season. I kind of lost it a little bit, but I picked up after the 200 metres and I really went back to myself to relax and enjoy," he added.

Bolt, the 100 and 200 metres world record holder, said he still had room for improvement, notably at the start and over the first 30-40 metres of his races.

He won the 100 metres at an IAAF World Challenge event in Croatia yesterday, but was slow out of the blocks and had to dig deep to cross the line first.

Bolt said his experience in Daegu had left him even more focused that usual and determined to end the season on a winning note.

Asked about the possible addition of the 400 metres or long jump to his repertoire, Bolt said he had been told by his coach not to comment until after the 2012 Olympics.

"I want to do something else, but I can't say what it is, he said. "My coach will decide what we venture into." — Reuters

Blatter denies he will step down early as Fifa president

BERNE, Sept 14 — Sepp Blatter has used Twitter to deny that he will quit as Fifa president before the end of his mandate and said he had not made a deal for Michel Platini to replace him.

"The suggestion that I intend to stop my four-year mandate before its end is simply ridiculous," Blatter, 75, said on Twitter today.

"The suggestion of a reported 'deal' between me and Michel Platini for the Fifa presidency is pure nonsense."

Blatter was re-elected for a fourth term in June, keeping him in office until 2015. He has said he will not stand again after that.

Former France captain Platini, the Uefa president, is widely seen as a possible successor to the Swiss and his mandate also ends in 2015. — Reuters

Princeton joins Harvard atop US News college list

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 06:10 AM PDT

WASHINGTON, Sept 14 — Princeton joined Harvard University atop the annual US News & World Report rankings of US colleges released yesterday, with the University of Maryland-Baltimore County named as the "up-and-coming" college.

The elite Ivy League had five schools in the magazine's top 10 with Harvard and Princeton tied at No. 1 and joined by Yale and Columbia University at third and fourth, respectively, while the University of Pennsylvania shared fifth with California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and the University of Chicago.

Caltech and MIT gained two spots from 2011 and Chicago rose four places. Harvard had held the No. 1 ranking alone in the previous survey.

The magazine, whose rankings were published as many high school students prepare to apply for college, said Williams College and Amherst College were the top two liberal arts colleges that offer at least half their degrees in liberal arts studies.

The rankings, compiled annually by the magazine since 1985, are based on a combination of survey responses and data provided by colleges. The magazine looks at factors such as tuition, total enrolment, acceptance rate, average freshman retention rate, graduation rate, class size, and SAT/ACT percentiles.

US News rated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County as the "up-and-comer" among colleges "making the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, and student life."

The Maryland school, a public institution founded in 1963, has in-state tuition and fees of US$9,171 (RM28,219) for 2011-2012, according to US News. The school ranked No. 157 in the best colleges category.

Harvard had tuition and fees of US$38,849 for 2011-2012.

Harvard, Yale and Princeton also were ranked as the top three in the "best value" category, based on the 2012 rankings and the 2010-2011 net cost of attendance for a student getting the average level of need-based financial aid.

"The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal," US News said. At the top three schools, at least 56 per cent of students received need-based grants.

That "best value" category has become increasingly important. The US Department of Education released data on Monday showing the national student loan default rate rose to 8.8 per cent in fiscal year 2009 from seven per cent in fiscal year 2008.

Fish oil may hinder chemotherapy

WASHINGTON, Sept 14 – Fatty acids found in fish oil supplements may block chemotherapy from attacking tumours and patients should stop taking them, said a study by Dutch researchers on Monday.

Fish oil supplements of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are sold worldwide, and are touted by manufacturers as a way to boost heart and brain health.

However, researchers at The Netherlands' University Medical Center Utrecht report in the journal Cancer Cell that two types of fatty acids, known as platinum-induced fatty acids or PIFAs, were shown to block one type of chemotherapy from working in animal tests.

"Whilst waiting for the results of further research, we currently recommend that these products should not be used whilst people are undergoing chemotherapy," said Professor Emile Voest, a medical oncologist at UMC Utrecht.

Voest supervised the research, which showed that a form of chemo called cisplatin, often used to treat lung, bladder, ovarian and testicular cancer, was rendered impotent by these two PIFAs, which are made by stem cells in the blood and are also present in fish oil supplements.

In tests on mice with tumours under the skin, researchers found that animals injected with the fatty acids, described as "normal amounts of fish oil," became insensitive to chemotherapy.

"Where resistance to chemotherapy is concerned, we usually believe that changes in the cancer cells themselves have occurred. Now we show that the body itself secretes protective substances into the blood that are powerful enough to block the effect of chemotherapy," said Voest.

"These substances can be found in some types of fish oil." – AFP

Samuel L. Jackson reunites with Tarantino for ‘Django Unchained’

Samuel L. Jackson reunites with Tarantino for 'Django Unchained'

LOS ANGELES, Sept 14 —  Samuel L. Jackson and Quentin Tarantino are together again. Jackson has taken a role in the director's "Django Unchained," TheWrap has confirmed.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the evil Calvin Candie. Jamie Foxx plays Django.

The movie is described as a spaghetti western, but it's an especially violent one. Django is a slave who is freed by a bounty hunter who kills — instead of merely capturing — the outlaws he searches for. The bounty hunter, a German dentist, befriends Django and helps him free his wife from a vile plantation owner, Candie.

Jackson will play Stephen, a sadistic slave in Candie's home.

Tarantino wrote and is directing the film. Having Jackson on the set will be familiar for him. The two worked together in the 1994 "Pulp Fiction," the 1997 "Jackie Brown," the 2004 "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" and the 2009 "Inglorious Basterds."

The Weinstein Company will release "Django Unchained" domestically. Sony Pictures will handle it internationally.

Indian actress banned from acting over alleged affair

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 07:29 AM PDT

MUMBAI, Sept 14 — A Kannada film actress has been banned from the industry for three years over an alleged affair with a co-star.

Nikita Thukral was slapped with the ban after co-star Darshan's wife accused the two of having an affair.

Darshan was arrested on charges of domestic violence last week after his wife Vijaylakshmi lodged a complaint with the police. A local court rejected his bail plea yesterday.

"When the outside person (sic) goes out, the problem automatically gets solved," President of the Karnataka Film Producers' Association, Munirathnam, told Reuters.

"This is a very serious issue involving a family," he said.

The association said Thukral (picture) was banned from acting only in Kannada movies, and was free to act in movies in any other language.

Thukral herself declined to comment on the issue, telling Reuters in a text message that the "artists association is looking into the matter."

While the Kannada film industry hasn't reacted openly, social networks were full of protests from outraged fans.

"Why is Nikita Thukral blamed for what Darshan did to his wife? Instead of banning actress, (sic) they should question Darshan," Faizan Lakhani wrote on Twitter.

One sentence letter by J.D. Salinger offered for US$50,000

One sentence letter by J.D. Salinger offered for US$50,000

LITTLETON, New Hampshire, Sept 14 — Owners of a handwritten one-sentence letter by reclusive writer J.D. Salinger hope to sell the document for $50,000 (RM154,270).

Writing in nearly illegible cursive on stationery bearing his initials, the author of "The Catcher in the Rye" and "Franny and Zooey" urges his maid to finish her chores before leaving for vacation so that he will not be "bothered with insignificant things."

In its listing on Ebay yesterday, the Nevada-based company selling the note calls autographed Salinger items "exceedingly rare."

Salinger (picture), who lived in Cornish, New Hampshire until his death at age 91 in 2010, was so guarded about his personal life that he filed suit to block the publication of a biography based in part on his private letters. The author did not own a telephone and shunned contact with fans of his work.

The full letter dated March 12, 1989 reads, "Dear Mary — Please make sure all the errands are done before you go on vacation, as I do not want to be bothered with insignificant things. Thank you. J.D. Salinger." — Reuters

Battles of reality

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 05:20 PM PDT

SEPT 14 — The recently held Malaysian Public Policy Competition [MPPC] was extremely timely and much needed. Timely because Malaysia is at a junction where she can use a little hand from one of her largest growing demography and if harnessed properly, the effects could be disproportionately positive.

It's a much-needed one because there is a sense that Malaysia youth hasn't been properly integrated into the policy-making apparatus of the nation. We are heavily courted by both sides of the political aisle primarily due to our numbers at the ballot box rather than our brains. And that's just a waste.

But now that the competition is over and the hype that surrounded it has cooled off, it really begets the question of "Now what?" And that goes to the heart of what I intend to highlight today: that there isn't a systemic or sustainable platform that taps the cognitive surplus of the Malaysian youth – especially on the policy-making front. The MPPC and initiatives of its sort are great but they are ad-hoc at best and should be viewed as a jumpstart to something much more organised.

Public policy is not a craft that is honed overnight. It involves the tenacity to grab hold of an idealistic vision and dousing it with strong concentrations of realism so that it can be shepherded into the world with the least resistance from relevant stakeholders. I was told that a skilled policy maker knows how to construct something feasible without compromising its core ideals.

It's a tough balancing act that has seen many casualties and like any other discipline, it's something that gets better with practice. Currently in Malaysia, there just isn't a platform that allows youths to systematically dabble in this arena at an early stage.

Thus I think it's high time that we either have a public policy organisation that is run by youths or that major think tanks in Malaysia start moving in a direction that ropes in this demography in a more tangible manner. I would much prefer the latter as it's a process of integrating the abilities of the youths in an already pre-existing structure as opposed to starting from scratch. Needless to say such an overarching initiative isn't an overnight affair as well. It takes time, namely because there are resource constrains but we have got to start somewhere.

I feel strongly about this because I am a direct beneficiary of such a system in the United States. Public policy was the last thing on my mind when I stepped into the final stages of my academic cocoon. But I was at an event where the university clubs did their recruitment drive and there was an organization named the Roosevelt Institute Campus-Network that caught my eye.

It is a public policy student think tank that has members nationwide. It was via this organization that I got my first taste of this discipline and it ultimately landed me an internship with the City of Chicago at the Department of Aviation. Needless to say, I haven't looked back since. Such an experience need not and should not be exclusively mine.

It is imperative to know that public policy isn't just about politics, for the latter is the subset of the former. I know many of my peers who are passionate about moving this nation forward but are incensed by the state of our political environment. This initiative has to be beyond that and those who choose to partake must not be seen as "joining politics la tu!"

And the second myth that must be wrestled with is the notion that public policy is always about the big stuff. If taking on NEP, PPSMI or AUKU is your cup of tea, then be my guest. But it could also be about double parking, clogged drains or more books in the library. The most interesting assignment I had was to write a policy paper on fixing the men's urinals at O'Hare International Airport. Sounds trivial to you? It saved the city a couple of millions over the course of a few years.

In short, such a systematic initiative should be based on the premise that an idea however big or small, if done for the greater good can make Malaysia a better place. Malaysian youth have long camped in the arena of ideas. It's high time that they cross the bridge into the battles of reality.

Kejadian di gereja Damansara keliru ketenangan

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 04:51 PM PDT

Apa pula status Mahathir minta Najib lewatkan PRU, sindir Pakatan

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 02:22 AM PDT

PAS persoal SPR buang 10,000 pengundi kes ‘IC palsu’

Posted: 14 Sep 2011 01:53 AM PDT

Tambah Suhaizan, selain isu daftar pemilih, kerajaan perlu menjalankan siasatan ke atas Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) berhubung mengeluarkan kad pengenalan palsu.
